Cindy Clark read Andrew Clemens’“The Jacket” to fourth-grade student Michael Thursday evening during Mountain Meadow Elementary School’s Literacy Night. Later, Andrew read Bob Hartman’s “The Wolf Who Cried Boy” to his mother. Down the hall, Clark’s older daughter Leslie, 11, was reading to kindergarten sister Melissa. Principal Adam Uhler said there were 250 RSVPs for the evening, but the parking lots and hallways suggested many more showed up. The first part of the evening was designed so teachers could meet with parents to discuss reading while students were read aloud to by special guest readers like Deputy Superintendent Janel Keating, School Board Member Jean Lacy and Glacier Middle School Principal Greg Borgerding. Westminster show awaits for Cooper and Kathy By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

Cooper enjoys the limelight, so when he and Kathy Lockyer step onto the green carpet at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Monday in Madison Square Garden in the heart of New York City, the 4-year-old wirehair standard

dachshund should be a hit. “He is just a wonderful ambassador for the breed,” Lockyer said of her mustached, longbodied dynamo. “He likes people and people like him. I like to see the smiles when they see his face.” Cooper will compete with 21 other wirehair standard dachshund entries, one of the largest

Carbonado voters will decide school levy Staff Writer

Superintendent Scott Hubbard hopes voters in the Carbonado Historical School District show their love for schools on Valentine’s Day. Hubbard is banking on Carbonado residents vote “yes on a four-year replacement levy that will keep his small kindergarten through eighth-grade school going.

After that, he said, “we would not have the financial resources to continue. The Carbonado community has a long history of supporting its school and has never failed a maintenance and operation levy. Voters should have already received ballots in

the mail and can return them immediately for the Feb. 14 election. The maintenance and operation levy, approximately 25 percent of the Carbonado School District budget, covers expenses state basic education money does not – items and programs like additional teachers and classified employees to keep class sizes low. Like poison, sin can eat away at your soul Have you ever enjoyed a glass of gasoline? Do you pound back a few bottles

of paint thinner every now and then? Do you occasionally fall off the wagon and

sip some weed killer? Of course not. It’s absurd. Sane people don’t drink poison because we understand the effect it has on us. It’s not hard. It’s not like we have to work at it. We simply understand that poison is ‌poison. Sin is poison. It’s like drinking gasoline. In his love for us, God gave a simple list of poisons to avoid. They are commonly known as the Ten

Commandments. G.K. Chesterton remarked on the simplicity of the Ten Commandments; “The reason they are so short and simple, he said, “is because God forbids so lit-

tle and permits so much. It’s true. But lots of people don’t believe it and suffer the consequences. The Bible says, “Dear friends, I urge you to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul (1 Peter 2:11). To put it another way, sin rots your heart and mind. It makes you deaf to grace, blind to joy and numb to love. The damage inflicted by physical poison can be seen with an X-ray or a microscope and the damage inflicted by sin is just as

obvious. People who drink sin find that it inevitably colors the way they talk, the way they think and the way they see the world. The more poison you ingest, the more it eats away at your soul until you become a hollow person in a sad haze of despair. So God warns against it. The question is, are you going to believe the labels he puts on a few dangerous behaviors, or not? It’s worth thinking about. I’ll see you on Sunday. Be true!

How do we care for needy? For The Courier-Herald

Last month I wrote an article and used the analogy of jigsaw puzzles. Well, just like those folks who do actual jigsaw puzzles – and once they get started they just have to finish it – I have had numerous phone calls from people who have questions raised by the article. We are having a meeting addressing hunger in the area at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Rainier Room at St. Elizabeth Hospital (it was postponed from January due to the snow and ice storm). But some folks just didn’t want to wait for the scheduled meeting, or couldn’t make the meet-

Seniors will again receive tax help The Enumclaw Public Library and the Enumclaw Senior Activity Center are again partnering with AARP to provide free tax assistance. The service is

ing, or just couldn’t believe some of the things I wrote. So, here are answers to just a few of the mostasked questions. No, Meals On Wheels, in western Washington, does not mean a hot meal delivered to a home-bound senior. It is a prepackaged frozen meal, available to seniors 60 years and older. It takes up to a week or longer to set-up a senior on these meals. In Enumclaw, Meals On Wheels are delivered only once a month. Why, you ask? Because Enumclaw is so rural, Senior Services doesn’t want to drive all the way out more than once a month and deliver the meals to our senior center. If you are approved

the day after we place with Senior Services of Seattle/ King County, it will be more than a month before we can order again – more than a month before the senior receives the frozen meals. Yes, the Enumclaw Senior Center still serves a hot meal to the door of home-bound seniors in our community. The center has offered this great service for 32 continuous years. It’s a great program that has made a difference for decades. This program may be coming to an end in 2012. No other senior center in King County or Pierce County offers a hot meal program, only the frozen

provided by trained volunteers for low- and middleincome taxpayers, particularly those 60 and older. Beginning Monday and running through April 9, assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays at the library. Call 360-825-2938 to schedule

an appointment. Please bring photo identification, all W-2 and 1099 forms, and last year’s return. Each participant will need to fill out an intake form which is available at the library beforehand, or allow a little time prior to each appointment.

Doors open to mail room

Baseball parents open year-round facility

By John Leggett Staff Writer

Diane’s Mail Room, which opened its doors last week in Buckley’s Jefferson Avenue Business Park, might be considered a small-businessman’s dream. This little outlet, wedged between a smoke shop and a sandwich place, stocks everything from stamps, office, school and shipping supplies to sunglasses, gift cards and greeting cards. There’s also a affiliation with shippers UPS, DHL and FedEx. Owner Ted Griffiths exclaims that while his outfit offers the usual amenities synonymous with mailrooms, his business also features a read one, give one, get one, free book exchange table. While it appears Griffiths takes a shotgun approach to satisfying clients’ needs, his strength might be his ability to tackle a plethora of printing requirements. “We can definitely handle a wide range of printing needs from printing out lithographs with the artist’s signature on them to high-end jobs like 3-D models and prints,” he said. “I hope people will come by and check us out, especially during our grand opening in the first week of March,” Griffiths said. He noted that during the grand opening, half his proceeds will be donated to the Disabled Veterans of America. Griffiths was, until last year, a clinical engineer – “You know, one of those fellas who hooks up those fancy medical contraptions in hospitals,” he said. Then came a layoff notice. That proved to be a blessing, as Griffiths was able to spend more time with his wife, Diane, who lost her battle with cancer in August. “It was definitely her energetic spirit that inspired me to start up this business, so I elected to name the store in her memory,” Griffiths said, noting he will become a supporting sponsor of the annual Buckley Relay For Life. Diane’s Mail Room is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The phone number is 360-761-7017 and the fax number is 360-761-7020.

In November, Bell opened Salon La Bell at 1756 Watson St. N., next to Frankie’s Pizza in Enumclaw. “In French it means the beautiful, but I wanted to use my name because I read somewhere you should put your name on something to brand it.”

Wet, windy weather makes it hard to get on a baseball field this time of year. Which, in turn, makes it hard for players to stay on top of their game. “Every year the weather gets worse and worse,” said Bill McNally, who along with his wife Melanie and fellow Plateau baseball parents Tony and Tina Rosenthal decided to do something about the dilemna. The four met through a local Plateau baseball program and found they shared a vision. They pooled their resources and opened Mechanically Sound Baseball at 1725 Garrett St., behind Les Schwab in the former indoor soccer center. The indoor baseball and fastpitch train-

ing facility includes three batting cages. The 7,000-square-foot building also includes space for pitching and fielding. It’s set up to accommodate youth and adult programs. Letters Tough times shape decision is no our level of coverage County friend to environment In the 16 months I’ve had the pleasure of being your community newspaper publisher, I’ve become close with readers in all four of the cities we serve: Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Buckley and Sumner. I’ve spent an extra bit of time with the folks down in Sumner, our newest market among the four. Sumner is a beautiful town, with a rich heritage and many charming, independent shops. My friends there, like former Councilman Leroy Goff, Sunset Chev’s Jerry Yoder, Green Mountain Coffee’s John Rader, City Attorney Brett Vinson, Diane Supler and countless other business owners and city employees, have made my visits there a pleasure. So it is with mixed feelings that I announce that due to economic realities, Brennan Purtzer The Courier-Herald must Publisher transition away from weekly publication for Sumner residents, to become a monthly special edition. The Courier-Herald will still be received weekly in our other communities – Enumclaw, Buckley, Black Diamond, Bonney Lake and every household around Lake Tapps. The Sumner-edition Courier-Herald will still be appearing on doorsteps on the third Wednesday of every month. We will strive to continue to serve readers with the most accurate and insightful news possible and keep an active calendar of events on our website. We chose this path after great deliberation, believing it to be the best way to provide the citizens of Sumner with a stable, ongoing commitment from their community newspaper. Representatives of The Courier-Herald, including myself, will still be seen in the community each and every week, involved with local organizations and interacting with news-makers and advertisers. We felt comfortable with this new approach after seeing one of our sister newspapers attempt it and succeed last year. They found they were still able to provide a valuable service, within the context of a sustainable business model. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re hoping for. As the economy improves, it is our hope that we too will find even better ways to connect with readers in Sumner and provide a valued forum for community news to the citizens of that fine city.

LAST WEEK: Were you encouraged by the president’s State of the Union speech?

Recycling is a pain. Tim Stephens (letter to the editor, Jan. 18) is right on. My husband, son and I recycle everything possible and sorting this and that here and there is just not fun. Nor is it fun to load it all into our three-horse trailer and haul it to the transfer station and again sort it here, there and then

the boxes. So why do we do it? Why do we carpool and why do we compost? Because it’s the “right thing to do for our environment and its future and, like exercise or any other notso-fun task, when we are done it just plain feels good. Living out here and having animals, combined with working in Renton and Seattle, it just isn’t feasible, nor do we have the time to take our now-garbage elsewhere so, we, like your numerous other readers, will simply toss hundreds of pounds of cans, bottles, plastic and paper right into the landfill, all mixed

together. It will be much easier but it will hurt as it will be in direct contradiction with our personal values. But to take a loaded trailer to work with us, to stop off in Auburn on the way home, can’t happen; nor can taking precious weekend time to do so. We chose to live here and we love it and aren’t about to move closer to the big city so we can recycle. Oh, and we do have roadside collection service but would literally fill a bin in two days or less. Suzy Myers Enumclaw

Schools must be No. 1 priority By Rep. Cathy Dahlquist For The Courier-Herald

Our state constitution is clear: Education is the “paramount duty of the state. The recent state Supreme Court decision in McCleary vs. State of Washington reaffirmed what many of us already knew to be the case – K-12 basic education is not being amply provided for in the state budget. The solution to this is to fund education first. As a co-sponsor of House Bill 2533, a bipartisan measure that would require budget writers to fund education before any other program or state agency receives tax dollars, I feel strongly now is the time to get serious about our constitutional mandate. The governor’s proposed budget would cut education funding

This photo is the Franklin Hotel in Franklin, a small town that grew just north of Enumclaw, and comes courtesy of the collection of the Enumclaw Public Library. The photo probably dates from the early 1900s. Most of the people are dressed up, indicating it might have been a Sunday or some other special event. In those days a hotel in a coal mining town was more of a room and boarding house for single men who worked in the mines. The hotel, which had 28 rooms, burned down on July 28, 1919. Research into this photo was provided by JoAnne Matsumura, archivist at the Black Diamond Historical Museum.

“spin cycle is not working and House Bill 2533 is the first step to begin to align spending with our constitutional mandate. There were the naysayers who fear we are upsetting the apple cart by revamping how we craft the state budget. It is

deeply disappointing to hear some believe we can’t change the failing status quo budgeting. This failure has created a model that makes education and services for the most vulnerable targets of the largest budget cuts, while increasing budgets for state agencies like the Department of Ecology. I have also heard that in this tough budget crunch,

now is not the time to change the budgeting system to fund education first. On the contrary, it is in the most difficult budget times that we must ensure the Legislature is required to treat education as the paramount duty in the budget. Fund Education First would not pit people dependent on social services against kids as some have claimed. The best way to lift people out of poverty is with a good education. We can pay for a quality education now to help our children be successful in life, or we can pay later in corrections and welfare programs. The time could not be better to show our children we will put them first. Let’s pass Fund Education First and ensure future legislatures won’t roll the dice with education funding. Rep. Cathy Dahlquist, R-Enumclaw, is serving her first term in the 31st Legislative District. She is the assistant ranking Republican on the House Education Appropriations and Oversight Committee. She was also appointed to serve on the House Education, Rules and Technology, Energy and Communications committees.

Lonesome Lake group hosting eighth cook-off By Kevin Hanson Editor

The Lonesome Lake Preservation Group will host its eighth annual campfire cook-off and potluck March 3 at the Greenwater Community Center. There’s no entry fee to compete in the cook-off, but participants are asked to provide their own wood. Categories include breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert. Creativity is encouraged and cooking pits open at noon. Judging will take place between 4 and 6 p.m. A horseshoe tournament will be featured again this year and will get rolling at noon. As another fundraiser, raffle tickets will be sold for a gas barbecue. The group of mostly-Greenwater residents exists to support the small, highalpine lake that sits at 5,000 feet above sea level on Forest Service land. Years ago, it was largely ignored, often littered with trash; trees were randomly cut for firewood and trails were stomped into the fragile environment. The Lonesome Lake Preservation Group adopted the lake and, with the formal blessing of the Forest Service, began making improvements. During the past couple of decades, members have put in a

vault toilet, worked to enhance vegetation around the lake, developed campsites and carved out formal trails. Two years ago, the footings were poured for a picnic shelter. A major step came recently when the framework was assembled for the shelter. Hefty logs salvaged from downed trees and two local firms – Wheeler Construction in Enumclaw and Southworth and Sons from Greenwater – donated the heavy equipment needed to get everything assembled. Plans call for installation of a roof this summer. Finding Lonesome Lake involves a 15-mile drive on the USFS 75 Road, which takes off from state Route 410 about four miles past Greenwater.

Give garden a dramatic touch Marianne Binetti will speak at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show on “Garden Opera: Divas, Villains and Heroes in the Garden. The second week of February is time to celebrate a symphony of spring at the Northwest Flower and Garden show staged each year in Seattle at the Washington State Convention Center. This year the show runs today, Wednesday, through Feb. 12. Music is the theme chosen for the theme gardens this year and there will be plenty of tunes along with notes of fragrance and plants that waltz through the spectacular indoor displays. Creating a garden is a lot like creating a symphony when you think about the repetition of plants and colors the way a melody reoccurs in a musical composition. But I like a lot of drama in a garden design. That means opera

in the musical world, so here are some practical ways to add drama to your own back yard – or stage a performance for all the neighbors to see in the front. Garden Opera: The Dramatic Divas Add delphiniums to your landscape this summer. Delphiniums sing the blues with elegant long legs and strong voices. Delphiniums may be demanding with drinking problems, chemical dependencies and requiring lots of support – doesn’t that sound just like a diva?

beauty that sheets of moss add to pots of spring bulbs set into a basket, to topiary forms waiting to be filled with new plant growth, to low spots too damp for a real lawn. Unmask the bad reputation moss has been given and move the phantom to center stage – moss lawns are much more practical in Western Washington than the closely cropped grasses meant for dry climates. More Garden Heroes: I nominate boulders that fill in for bushes as rock solid heroes in the garden, as well as garden benches, bird baths and a wide, well-designed pathway. Garden heroes have a strong voice and give the garden plot more structure. Hearty and healthy evergreen plants are also heroes of the strong and silent type in the garden and might I suggest the evergreen yew plant (the genus Taxus) as the bestbehaved evergreen, especially for dark and shaded spots. Every opera needs a supporting cast and sometimes the real stars are all about yew. Yes, every landscape has a story to tell, so add some drama to yours with divas, villains and heroes in the garden. The danger is in the month of August when these newly-planted trees plead for extra water and the cries go unanswered. You will need to water new trees and shrubs for at least two summers so they can establish a solid root system before they can find water during our dry months. Garden Opera: The Heroes Show me a garden hero and I’ll show you a plant placed in the right place with a love of our climate and weather conditions. Many are native or with native roots like rhododendrons, Pieris, heucheras, Japanese maples and the always seen but never appreciated moss monster. Only the phantom of the opera could understand how our native moss – green, uncomplaining and a wonderful backdrop and support to other native plants – is so hated, banished and tossed into the murky underground by gardeners without a heart. In many respects, those were the glory days in the Lee lounge. LES STEHR Les Stehr, 78, passed away peacefully, January 11th at Harborview Medical Center after experiencing a stroke. Les was born in Odessa, Washington on May 14, 1933 to his parents Fred and Helen Stehr. He is survived by his daughter Laurie Krone (Dave), grandchildren Tanner and Bradey, brother Tom Stehr (Julie), sister Peggy Burk (Arch), along with many step children, step grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ron Stehr. Les was the oldest of four. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Odessa High School. He went on to Washington State University where he earned his degree in Hotel & Restaurant Administration. Les entered the Air Force in 1955 where he went on to become an aircraft commander on the then new C-123 aircraft. Before leaving the Air Force, Les received a position as Club Officer where he substantially increased the profitability of the Officer’s Club. Les left the Air Force in April of 1960 and soon found himself managing the Elks Club in Auburn. During his tenure at the Elks he was able to bring in national billings including The Lennon Sisters and Bob Newhart, in what was his first ever private club appearance. In 1974 Les bought into the Lee Restaurant in Enumclaw as a minority owner. Les eventually bought out the remaining ownership stake and did not sell until March of 2011. Between March of 2011 and last week he had been running the books for his stepdaughter who is the new owner. In addition to his working career, Les was an avid golfer and a long time horse owner and consequently a member of many active social circles. Services were held at Emerald Downs on January 21. er. Here again, he was known to place a wager or two, if the odds seemed right. After 18 holes, you might have caught sight of him in the clubhouse. Personally, I can only remember Les having a drink on two occasions. Both were at Lee employee Christmas parties. He ran the restaurant for approximately 34 years, then sold the business to his stepdaughter, Diane Mills, in 2011. Thereafter, in order to keep busy, he continued to manage the restaurant’s financial records. In his cramped, little office beside the stairs to the basement – the desk, chairs, and carpet looked like anachronisms from the 1920s – he invented his own paper-and-ink system for filing financial statements that no one short of a Hindu holyman or a

Harvard mathematician could hope to decipher‌ and you had to wonder if the Harvard prof could actually succeed. Diane certainly couldn’t. And yet, Les could find whatever Diane wanted to see with astounding speed. Ask him for the speadsheet for Mother’s Day in 1988 and he’d find it within a few seconds. He never cared for computers. They were too slow. In keeping with Sinatra’s hit song, Les generally lived his life his way, guided by a moral compass and social compassion that most of his friends and employees may not have been aware of. When hotel tenants came up a little short of cash and couldn’t afford their prescription medicine, Les would extend them a “loanâ€? – in quote marks because he never expected

The first time I met Les Stehr I thought he was a rather grumpy fellow and, at least on a superficial level, my first impressions were correct. (But, as bartender Tamara Dedmon points out, most of his gruffness was just show.) He didn’t seem especially sociable and he certainly wasn’t a party animal. Consequently, I never got to know Les very well, despite the fact that the Lee lounge has more or less been my home port for the past 30 years. He was raised on a wheat farm on the windblown plains of eastern Washington. After a five-year stretch in the U.S. Air Force and four years at Washington State

Charlotte worked for various small and large electrical companies, starting in the mid 1960’s for General Electric and Boeing before putting in some 25 years at Mannesmann Tally in Renton, WA. Even after her retirement Charlotte enjoyed working at Erwin’s Mini Mart in Enumclaw and Ken’s Auto Wash and Smitty’s Conoco in Ellensburg. She loved the contact with her “regularsâ€? as she called them. Charlotte was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and most recently scrapbooking. She shared her many loves with her family and was a great support to each and every one of them. Charlotte was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ray and her parents. EHS third at state cheer By Brenda Sexton Staff Writer

Enumclaw High’s cheer squad finished third in the coed competition Saturday at the state cheer championships in Everett. The coed division included two 4A teams, three 3A teams and one 2A team. Coach Kim Westering said the Hornets were the highest placing 3A/2A team, but lost to the two 4A teams, Kentwood and Stadium, that were in the division. The Hornets’ score was 231. Kentwood finished with 249 and Stadium 244. Westering also noted Enumclaw had the secondhighest 3A/2A/1A score of all 50 teams in all divisions, only two points behind Hanford’s 233. High schools at the state cheerleading tournament competed in: varsity small, varsity medium, varsity large, coed and non-tumbling. EHS earns No. 5 seed into tourney By John Leggett Staff Writer

The Enumclaw High boys finished the regular season with a 3-7 record and head into this weekend’s subdistrict tournament as the No. 5 seed from the South Puget Sound League 3A. Jan. 30, the Hornets got knocked out of their saddle by Lakes 83-57. The next evening, playing at home, Enumclaw managed a major upset of Auburn Mountainview. EHS hung with the Lions, trailing by a scant two points at intermission 32-30. Auburn Mountainview could not shake the tenacious Enumclaw bunch in the second half, as the Hornets put on a great show for the home faithful, outscoring the Lions to register the 68-64 upset. Just as he had the previous evening, guard Tony Chynoweth rung up 21 points, but the difference was his backcourt sidekick Perry Rockwood

EHS Boys Basketball duplicating the effort. Both shot 50 percent from 3-point territory and had a handful of steals. Additionally, Chynoweth had 10 rebounds and his brother Ryan buried a pair of critical free throws with six seconds left to seal the win. Unfortunately for the Hornets, that was their last win of the week. Enumclaw then played back-to-back meetings with Bonney Lake Friday and Saturday, losing both. Friday, EHS hit the road and suffered a 72-69 loss. The next night, in Enumclaw, BLHS came on like gangbusters and won 75-69, with all five Panther starters notching double figures. The sparkling jewel in the crown for Chynoweth was the 32 points he recorded at Bonney Lake Friday; the Panthers apparently took exception and held him to half that many the

Next, the EHS crew will look to repeat as district champion. The district meet is Saturday at Mount Rainier High School and will determine the teams and individual gymnasts who will earn a berth in the following weekend’s state Class 2A/3A meet at the Tacoma Dome. Enumclaw fans will remember last year’s state meet, where the first-year Hornet program fell just a half-point shy of a state title.

The White River boys basketball squad cruised down the South Puget Sound League 2A highway, beating Fife 59-55 Feb. 1 and downing Steilacoom 72-63 Thursday, then ran into a nasty barrier in Sumner High. The Hornets managed to shoot just 25 percent from the floor and produced their lowest point total of the season against the Spartans, losing 41-34. White River lost just three league encounters all season, but two of those came at the hands of the Spartans, who finished with an identical league mark to White River at 11-3. Since White River lost both of its league tilts against Sumner, the Spartans emerged as the No. 2 seed. White River will take the No. 3 seed out of the SPSL 2A. White River next plays at 6 p.m. Friday at Foster High in Tukwila, most likely taking on Renton of the Seamount League.

Danielle Cormier, Jade Paterson and Sam Lanting earned individual championships as Enumclaw High swept to the team title Saturday at the Subregion 4 girls wrestling tournament at Auburn Mountainview. The Hornets put 115.5 points on the board. Mount Tahoma finished with 75 and Foss, 74. The top three finishers advance to the regional tournament Saturday at Emerald Ridge with the top five there advancing to the state tournament Feb. 17 and 18 at the Tacoma Dome. Cormier won her 145pound crown by pinning Wyatt Sailing of Evergreen. Paterson captured the 170-pound title with a pin over Latiana Tamaese of Stadium. Lanting had to top teammate KC Moulden for the

White River High may have been nipped by Fife for the subregional championship Saturday, but the Hornets will send 13 into the Region 3 tournament. The top four wrestlers in each weight division at the Region 3 Tournament at Olympic High Saturday move on to the state tournament Feb. 17 and 18 in the Tacoma Dome. In front of their home crowd Saturday, the Hornets put seven in the finals and came away with four titles. Fife won the eight-team tournament with 285.5 points.

Backed behind champions Kylie Norton, Mikaela Kilcup and Sam Mitchell, the White River High girls wrestling team will move 12 girls on to the regional wrestling tournament Saturday at Emerald Ridge in Puyallup. From there the top wrestlers will advance to the state tournament Feb. 17 and 18 in the Tacoma Dome. Katie Johnson, Morgan Shirey, Kalynn Gulin, Dylan Fagan and Kamy Padgett were runners-up. Ericka Selby and Ericka Jackson finished third for the Hornets and Kendra Blue took fourth for her slot into regionals. Jesslyn Blue finished fifth and will serve as an alternate. “I have girls on this team who will not rest until they are state champions,” Valdez said. “There isn’t a member of this team that doesn’t believe that this group can bring home a state championship for this school every one of them has a goal to be a state placer.”

teams will advance from district play to the Class 2A state tournament. The White River crew had a busy final week of the regular season – and a wildly successful one – winning three games by a combined 86 points. The week started Jan. 31 with a 57-14 victory over the visiting Fife Trojans, continued with a 58-25 drubbing of the Steilacoom Sentinels Feb. 1 and concluded Friday night with a 43-33 road win over third-place Sumner. Friday’s victory was built in the first half, where the Hornet girls enjoyed a 28-13 advantage. The Spartans outscored White River 20-15 during the second half, but the damage had already been done. The Hornets were paced by leading scorers Kennedy Hobert, who finished with 13 points, and Cassidy France, who had 11. Against Steilacoom, Hobert had 15 points and France had 10. Against Fife, Amanda Lance led the way with 14 points, France contributed 13 and Hobert had 10.

The White River High girls finished the South Puget Sound League 2A basketball season with a 13-1 record, as did the Cruisers from Eatonville. In head-to-head competition, they also battled to a draw, each winning on the other’s home court. So, the two were scheduled to meet for a third time, to determine which would head into postseason play as the league’s No. 1 seed. That game was Tuesday night at Sumner High, with results coming too late to include here. Win or lose, White River will next play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in subdistrict action. If the Hornet girls were victorious Tuesday, they will face the Olympic League’s No. 2 team at Clover Park High School. If the Hornets fell to Eatonville, they will take on the Olympic League’s No. 3 club at North Mason High. EHS splashes to second-place at league meet By Brenda Sexton

EHS Swim and Dive

Staff Writer

Enumclaw High’s boys swim and dive team sprinted to a second-place finish behind Peninsula Saturday at the SPSL 3A/2A championships at Lakes High. Hornets with previous district-qualifying times and those who earned them Saturday will compete Friday and Saturday in the District 3 meet at Hazen High in Renton. Preliminary swim

races begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday with diving scheduled to follow. Finals are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Saturday. For information visit the WestCentral District Web site at www.wcd3.org. Peninsula won the league meet with 571 points. EHS finished with 434. Lakes was third with 370. EHS kicked off the finals with a victory in the 200yard medley relay. Thomas

Petersen, Bennon VanHoof, Gabe Sales and Will Cooper won with a state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 44.88 seconds. The relay posted a state-qualifying time earlier in the season. Jesse Skipworth, who qualified for the state meet earlier and set a school record, won the league championship with 337.60 points. Cooper won the 100 butterfly in 57.24 and the 500 freestyle in 5:11.57. Petersen, who also previ-

In a scheduling fluke brought about by Mother Nature, the Enumclaw High girls finished the regular season with games against Bonney Lake on consecutive nights. Boosting their third-place standing in the South Puget Sound League 3A, the Hornets added two victories to finish the league campaign 7-3. Now comes subdistrict play for the EHS girls (14-6 overall). The postseason begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, with both the opponent and site still to be determined. If EHS is victorious Thursday, the Hornets advance to district competition as the No. 4 seed; the first district game would be at 8 p.m. Feb. 16 at Clover Park. Should the Hornets lose Thursday, they would play at 4:15 Saturday at Lakes in a winner-to-district, loser-out game. Saturday’s winner will take the No. 5 seed into district play, meaning a tilt at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at Clover Park. The close of the regular season had Enumclaw beating Bonney Lake 69-48 Friday at home, then capturing a 48-44, overtime win the following night on the road. During Saturday’s exciting OT affair Julia Myers and Danielle Saltarelli scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead the Hornet offense. The night before, Myers scored 21 points and Calli Remitz added 12 and Enumclaw had a much easier time with the Panthers. EHS opened a double-digit lead by the end of the opening eight minutes, 20-9, slipped a bit in the second quarter but still had a 34-26 advantage at halftime, and then outscored Bonney Lake in each of the final periods.

GYMNASTICS FROM 14 Saturday’s subdistrict meet saw the Hornets post a team total of 172.725 points. Auburn Mountainview was second with 160.525 and will join EHS as a full-team entry to the district meet. Individually, Bannerot took Saturday’s all-around title with a combined score of 36.9. She was first in the vault, 9.5, bars, 8.75, and floor exercise, 9.75, while tying for third on the beam, 8.9. Ward’s second-place performance in the all-around was based on a first-place finish on the beam, 9.4, and second-place efforts in both the bars, 7.95, and floor exercise, 9.5. Additionally, Enumclaw was boosted by a third-place finish in the vault by Molly Mattheis, 9.0, a third-place showing in the bars by Michelle McKinlay, 7.4, and a tie for third on the beam by Emily Berte, 8.9.

EHS GIRLS FROM 14 265-pound belt. Lanting got the upper hand with a 15-0 technical fall. Logann Erskine also finished second for the Hornets,

falling to Kiaya Van Scoyoc of Lakes in the 155-pound final. Jasmine Anderson, 106, and Kassandra Renfrow, 170, finished third. Kristen Green finished sixth at 118 pounds.
