The Academy Awards are a oncea-year celebration of film and its stars, one of the most glamorous evenings of the year, attended by the most glamorous of people. One of those people was Mercer Island native Beth Laschever, accompanied by two of her peers from Hofstra University in Long Island, New York, Jackie De Tore and Melanie Rubin. As a team, the three young women won The Academy and Ontheredcarpet.com’s “Oscar College Journalist Contest,” a jointpromotion from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and Los Angeles’ KABC-TV. All three girls work for and help produce entertainment reports for Hofstra’s college radio station. Laschever said when she was applying for colleges, she was inter-

The Mercer Island City Council will continue to receive input from citizens on a proposed ordinance to restrict parking along much of East Mercer Way, West Mercer Way and North Mercer Way. The hearing will take place at 7 p.m., March 5, in the Council Chambers at City Hall at 9611 S.E. 36th Street. The ordinance is designed to protect cyclists and pedestrians by prohibiting parking from dawn to dusk for much of the roadway that circles the Island. There will be exceptions. The city has paved seven miles of new shoulder along the Mercer Ways and wants to ensure that those portions of the road, along with other stretches, remain open.

School leaders consider bond sales and construction scenarios for new schools By Linda Ball
lball@mi-reporter.com
At the most recent meeting of the Mercer Island School District’s Board of Directors, the conversation about the bond proposal continued. It was suggested by a couple of citizens that the district should provide detailed information regarding the bond proposal in an official King County voter’s pamphlet, which is distributed to all registered voters, explaining the bond proposal. The board discussed it, and in a vote of 3-2, decided against it. Board members Dave Myerson and Brian Emanuels voted for the pamphlet. A pamphlet would cost $3,000, a cost that the majority felt the district didn’t need to be indebted for, since they have not done so in recent elections. Board member Adair Dingle said it would seem to her that a responsible voter would research the issue on their own. President Janet Frohmayer and board member Pat Braman also did not think a voter’s pamphlet was worth $3,000.
Dean Mack, the Mercer Island School District's executive director of business services, presented the district’s board of directors with four different scenarios as to how the sales of bonds would be timed, as well as a construction schedule for the building of three new elementary schools and a new Islander Middle School. The most aggressive schedule would have a new Island Park Elementary opening in August of 2015, with a new middle school and Lakeridge Elementary opening in August 2016, followed by the new West Mercer Elementary opening in August of 2017. Given this scenario, if approved by voters, the bonds would be sold incrementally beginning this year, and the tax rate will bump from the present $2.68 per thousand dollars of assessed valuation, to $3.62, which will remain consistent until 2020 and beyond, assuming the maintenance and operations tax (M&O), and capital levies remain the same. The levies on the books now will pay off in 2015. “The goal is to keep the

The Timothy Bridge More than 600 mourners came to honor and remember Islander Timothy Wettack at a service held Saturday at Mercer Island High School. Wettack died Feb. 20. Friends, teachers, former coaches and mentors packed the auditorium, which ordinarily seats around 500. They came from all over, some as far as Helena, Mont. There were members of the UW lacrosse team and their coach. A group of former co-workers from the National Park Service attended. All spoke about his focus and courage; his love of the outdoors, friends and family. Wettack died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. He was 23. Named after his father, Timothy Wettack graduated in 2007 from Mercer Island High School. He was a multi-sport athlete who began swimming at age 5. At 8, he played soccer on a team coached by his father, Tim Wettack, who told the crowd that neither he nor his son knew anything about the sport. They learned together. From there the younger Wettack went on to be a
leader and key part of sports teams at MIHS that included football, lacrosse and wrestling. There were injuries, disappointments, but many, many honors and successes. Along with organized sports, Wettack and his brother Jonathan and father enjoyed hiking and backpacking and all manner of outdoor physical activities. Beyond the talk of his physical gifts, many praised his work ethic and tenacity that were applied not only to sports but to his studies. He was tapped to be a member of the National Honor Society as freshman. After high school, he attended the University of Washington, where he graduated early, in December 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Law, Societies, and Justice. He held down jobs along the way. Sean O’Meara, a lead ranger and a former acting superintendent at the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Pioneer Square, spoke of when he first met Wettack at a Mercer Island Rotary meeting. O’Meara had been invited as a guest speaker. Wettack was honored as a Rotary Student of the Month.

Timothy Wettack, a 2007 graduate of Mercer Island High School, died Feb. 20 in an accident. Hundreds came to remember him at a service last Saturday at the high school auditorium. Above, a photo of the bridge named for Wettack. O’Meara was impressed with how Wettack presented himself at the meeting and what he had to say. He approached him afterward, gave him his card and told him he would like to have him come to work for the Park Service some day. Wettack did join the Park Service in an internship program as he completed his college degree. It was a job far outside what you would imagine him doing, the ranger said. “You should have seen him, panning for gold in the basement of the Cadillac Hotel,” he said to much laughter. Through these difficult days, the Wettack family
was supported by a group of Tim Wettack’s fellow Navy Seals. The group of five, which includes El Jahncke of Mercer Island, have remained close. One of those Navy Seals, Tom Boyhan, said that the younger Wettack’s drive and perseverance became apparent at a early age. On an outing when Wettack was still a toddler, his parents and the Boyhans were hiking on their property in Everson, Wash. They came to a drainage ditch where a log served as a bridge. Young Timothy slipped and fell in. His mother, Connie, gathered him up to take him back for dry clothes. The little boy, muddy and wet
— who did not cry when he fell — burst into tears when his mother picked him up to head back. He said no, he wanted to continue with the group. And he did. Not long after that day, Boyhan replaced the log with a proper bridge built of railroad ties. He and his wife Janet, who do not have children of their own, christened it “Timothy Bridge” and made a sign that has stood by it ever since. It was blown over a few years ago, but was promptly rebuilt and repainted. High school classmate and fraternity brother, Will Hansen, was Wettack’s roommate for two years
while both attended the University of Washington. Hansen admired his friend. “He had the ability to change the entire feeling in a room,” he said. Beyond his athletic prowess, his friend was also musically talented and was in a group creating electronic beat and dance music, he added. But there was definitely a serious side. “He could be the life of the party, yet take on any responsibility and handle it better than anyone.” To comment and find out more about Timothy, go to the Reporter’s website at www.mi-reporter.com.

To the editor Say no to Mercer Ways parking restrictions The City Council intends to pass an ordinance on March 5 banning daylight parking along most of East and West Mercer Ways and parts of North Mercer Way. The proposed “Dawn to Dusk” policy is difficult on residents because the hours can change so much during the year. If they want to have an evening barbecue in July, their guests can’t park on the street till after 10 p.m. If someone is sleeping over, they better be prepared to move their cars at 4:30 a.m. Councilman Dan Grausz feels that paving some shoulders has given the city the right to dictate how all of them are used. On Feb. 21, he said that if he’d known they would be used for parking, he wouldn’t have bothered to pave them. He forgets that the paving was paid for by taxpayers — among them the people who live next to these shoulders. There aren’t many shoulders that are wide enough to park on, but there are some and they are precious. Right now, people can use them to visit friends, pick up their mail or stop at a yard sale. If parents want to wait for the school bus or take their kids to a party, they can park without fear of a ticket. If someone is having work done on his house, he and the workers have a place to park. If the City Council has their way, that flexibility will be gone and the greenery along the Mercer Ways will become blighted with

miles of “No Parking” signs. At a time when burglaries are on the rise, the police will be busy enforcing the parking ban. Councilwoman Jane Meyer Brahm pointed out that city staff recommended AGAINST implementing this policy — and there is no data to support a need for it. I hope the people of Mercer Island will think about how this policy will harm life in our Island home and tell our Council to vote against it. Joy Matsuura
School Board skips voters’ pamphlet to explain bond vote I was very disappointed by the Mercer Island School Board’s decision not to fund the $3,000 to place the almost $200,000,000 school bond measure in the voters’ pamphlet. This 3-2 vote was a vote for obfuscation and against the transparency so necessary for wellthought out governance. Adair Dingle rationalized her opposition by stating that she generally did not find voters’ pamphlets helpful; Pat Braman opined that most people already understood the bond issue and three members felt that since such voters’ pamphlets had apparently not been produced for prior school bond measures, this almost $200,000,000 bond measure, the largest in Mercer Island school history by far, did not deserve a pro and con analysis either. After all, spending .0015 percent of the total amount of the bond for printing a voters’ pamphlet, it was said, would not be good stewardship of citizens’ money. However, those in positions of power derive their
authority from a well-informed electorate, and stymieing publication of the voters’ pamphlet runs counter to democratic principle. The board’s lack of openness and hurried presentation of a bond measure lacking fleshed-out plans deserves a “no” vote on the bond issue. Eva Zemplenyi
of predicting student enrollment given the roller coaster history thereof on Mercer Island. (Assuming additions can more efficiently take the place of current portables, little or no further land use variances may be required.) Then seek more reasonable solutions from experts. Give them flexibility. Maybe we can secure competing architectural firm proposals (the more the better?), followed by competing construction bids to maximize value and minimize cost. Professionals should be able to help solve the problems much more effectively for our students. Let’s demonstrate leadership in municipal governance and environmental/resource management rather than destroy substantial quantities of very usable assets leading to clearly exorbitant and unnecessary overall expense. Thomas Ulie, CFA
No on MISD bond, why not look at specifics? According to the MISD Superintendent’s Office, $175 million of the proposed $196 million school bond proceeds will fund replacements for our four elementary and middle schools (presumably after demolishing current schools for additional unprovided costs). That is because our dedicated School Board, charged with the tasks of solving problems of overcrowding and excessive portable use, and given designated constraints, could find no other solution. Yet our existing schools were substantially renovated in the mid to late 1990s or so, and are currently rated by the King County Assessor as average in the case of West Mercer Elementary, and good for the others. Did our administration ask too much of the board? Should they first have sought input from construction specialists by providing a clear list of needs and then soliciting the most creative, productive and cost-effective solutions? The answers seem obvious. Let our managers and board itemize specific needs and issues, including more class space (to replace portables), additional lunchrooms and the uncertainty
Students asks voters to say yes on school vote My name is Brennan Hodgins, I am 10 years old in fifth grade, and I am writing to you because I would like more people to see the difficulties we are having at Lakeridge Elementary. Our school is too small for all of us 600 kids. I am in the biggest class in Lakeridge and possibly the whole district. I have 28 kids in my class, and my math class is even bigger with 30 kids. My math class is in a small portable classroom with kids at the back table and at computer desks. The multipurpose room at Lakeridge is used for a cafeteria, a gym, theater room and assemblies. We have to have three different lunches, and my lunch starts close
to 1 p.m. because it is too crowded and noisy with just two lunches. When we have assemblies the people who are performing have to do it twice because there is not enough room for all of us to fit in the gym at once. We don’t have much room at recess either, so we have to share field space with the younger grades. We have four different games being played on a field made for one baseball game. So I don’t see any reason to add on to the schools we have now and take away our playground even more. There is not enough equipment for science, so not everybody gets to see the experiments, and in math when we use protractors for homework, often we have to share with somebody. The bathrooms are too far for kindergartners, so sometimes they don’t make it on time and they get embarrassed, and it’s hard for them to concentrate on what they are supposed to be learning. Operetta practices are in the hallway by the piano, which means the people who have to go out in the hall to work on something, for whatever reason, can’t do their best because of the music and singing from the operetta practice. When we switch classrooms for science, there aren’t enough desks if a large class has to go to a portable classroom, so some kids have to sit at computer desks or the back table, like in my math, and it is hard to concentrate at those desks. For all these reasons I am in favor of building new schools. We need more space. So please vote “yes” on the bond to build new schools. Brennan Hodgins

Sinai Hospital and Bronx Municipal Hospital. He, his wife Esther and their two sons, Jeffrey and Steven, came to Seattle in 1959. He practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at a number of Seattle Hospitals but mainly at The Doctors Hospital where among many other departmental and committee appointments, he was honored with the Teacher of the year award, became Chief of Staff and served on the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees. During negotiations of the merger with Seattle General and Swedish Hospital, Mannie served on the Merger Committee and was appointed co-chief of the OB/Gyn Department at Swedish Hospital. He was also a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington. In 1968 he married Karen Grove; they had their beautiful daughter, Amy, in 1971 to bring home to her brothers, Jeff and Steve. Karen & Mannie shared 43 wonderful years together working hard, playing hard and traveling the world. Their favorite retreat was their home in Maui, spending several months a year there after retirement. It was extra special when any of the grandkids came for a visit.
When Mannie retired 15 years ago, he missed his patients terribly. Fearing his skills as a physician might go away, he took up Japanese Bonsai Gardening and spent most of his days and evenings tending to (or making rounds on) his green “patients”, transplanting, wiring them, watering and fertilizing. No friend was allowed to leave our home without an hours tour of his treasures explaining something unique about each one. His sizeable collection is available to anyone who would love & care for them the way he did. His children meant everything to him and his grandchildren were the light of his life. He had a special connection with his only grandson, Logan. How proud he was that all three of his children have happy, successful lives and there is no doubt his legacy will live on in his wonderfully special grandchildren. We lost an amazing man – he was one of a kind and we will miss him terribly. Mannie was caring and insightful about humanity; he had a great passion for politics, world events and learning. He cared deeply about his friends and mentoring young people about investments & saving for the future. He lived life to the fullest and had tremendous integrity and conviction. There is no replacing Mannie Laband. The family wants to thank Dr. Henry Kaplan and his entire Oncology staff for their extraordinary care, love, support and friendship. In lieu of flowers, please support Dr. Kaplan’s Cancer Research Center. www.swedishfoundation.org (Click Donate, Give to Swedish, designate “Other” and fill in the box with “Kaplan Cancer”.) Mannie is survived by his loving wife Karen, oldest son Jeffrey Laband (his wife Valerie & his daughters Annika & Carlyn), son Steven Laband, MD (wife Laurel Kubby, MD & their daughter Jordan), and only daughter Amy Anderson (husband Mike and their children Laura & Logan). He is also survived by his loving sister Inge Strauss (husband & best friend Bruno and their four sons Bob, Randy, Bill & Michael and their 9 grandchildren). There will be a Celebration of his life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 3rd at Overlake Golf Club. 8000 Northeast 16th Street, Medina, WA 98039. 588607

Devoted Island bus driver will be missed By Linda Ball
lball@mi-reporter.com
After 30 years and thousands of miles of negotiating a school bus weighing more than 10 tons through all kinds of weather and terrain, Bunnie Lehan turned in the keys to her bus last Friday. Lehan started driving a school bus for the Mercer Island School District as a substitute driver in 1982. She used to work eight-hour days. Now she has been working about four and a half, she said. “I think they found it was cheaper for Metro to serve high school kids,” she said. But when she was driving the long hours, she had the difficult East Mercer Way route from the SJCC to about 70th Street. She drove kids
from kindergarten to seniors in high school on that route for 25 years. “You don’t get to do East Mercer drive until you’ve proven yourself on other routes,” said the district’s transportation director Todd Kelsay. Kelsay said she knew every twist and turn on that route by heart. He said it’s astonishing how many miles she has driven on East Mercer. “We’ll miss her a lot,” Kelsay said. “She’s been a model for a lot of drivers.” Lehan said it’s a road you don’t want to take for granted. She’s encountered semi’s coming around a sharp corner that have exited onto the Island and are basically lost. She called it the challenge of the road.
Bunnie Lehan, a longtime Mercer Island school bus driver, retired this month. She never had any accidents. She said she tried to learn every child’s name and where they got on and off the bus. “I had a few scares,” she said. “I also considered myself a mother hen with big long wings, so you keep a vigilance, especially with the elementary kids.” She said she followed her instincts if she felt something wasn’t right. In fact, if a child was going to be getting off at

a different stop (except for the high school kids), they needed a note. “That’s been standard procedure for as long as I can remember,” she said. Lehan said the most enjoyable part of her job has been the kids. When she gave up the East Mercer route to drive special needs kids, which is what she has been doing the past couple of years, she was driving kindergartners of students she drove in the ’80s and ’90s. Kelsay said she drove his kids from kindergarten until high school. Lehan said elementary school kids stretched her patience a bit, saying it was a constant conversation to keep them safe, sitting down, staying out of the aisles and keeping their hands inside. “I liked the diversity of middle schoolers, even though they’re going through adolescence and all the hormonal issues,” Lehan said.
But she had fun watching all of them grow. Mike Flaherty is the district’s bus dispatcher now, but he was also a driver. He started with the district in 1992 and knows Lehan well. “Her retirement is well deserved and she will be missed,” Flaherty said. “She was devoted to the kids she drove. She was an example for the other drivers. She prided herself in how well she performed her job.” Lehan said the job has taken a toll on her body, and that is why she’s retiring. She’s had four shoulder surgeries and has back issues. Before becoming a bus driver, she was a housewife, mom and had a few part-time jobs. She is married with two grown daughters in their 40s, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. “I’ll miss the camaraderie,” Lehan said. “I love getting up and coming to work. I like the interaction with the kids
and parents. This balances my personal life.” But she is looking forward to retirement, with new adventure, travel, time for her crafts and spending more time with her great-grandchildren. She said it will be nice to turn her alarm off and just know she doesn’t have to leap out of bed. She’s also interested in doing volunteer work.

that the city will install “No Parking on Pavement Dawn to Dusk” signs along East Mercer Way, West Mercer Way and portions of North Mercer Way in those places where improved, paved shoulders have been built. The restrictions will prohibit anyone from parking vehicles on the paved shoulders during daylight hours. Exceptions for snow

The new parking restrictions would go into effect 30 days after approval by the City Council and notification of the approval is given to the public. Lily Foot Massage brings reflexology to Mercer Island Business partners Yong Xu and Lily Xu recognized the absence of a relaxing place to have a massage or reflexology on Mercer Island. They have filled that void by opening Lily Foot Massage on the South end of the Island, opening Feb. 10. Working in salons in Seattle for several years, they decided it was time to strike out on their own. With two other massage therapists, two tables for full body massage, and six very comfortable chairs for reflexology, and a tranquil atmosphere, you will quickly forget the troubles of your day. Yong Xu said he feels some people are afraid to come in because they are not familiar with the practices of Eastern medicine, or reflexology. The idea behind reflexology is that areas of the feet and hands correspond to areas and organs of the body. By manipulating these areas with pressure and massage, a signal will pulse through the nervous system which the body rec-

Xu said reflexology dates back to the Chinese and Egyptians 2,000 years ago, later introduced to the Western world in 1913 by Dr. William Fitzgerald as “zone therapy.” Later, it was developed into reflexology by Eunice Ingham in the 1930s. Regardless of whether you adhere to the concepts of Eastern medicine, the onehour foot massage offered at Lily Foot Massage is heavenly. ing, the therapists gently but firmly massage your head, arms, hands and shoulders. Your feet are dried off, then the reflexology begins, easily putting you to sleep if you’re so inclined. But it doesn’t end there. You are turned over for a 15-minute back massage. At this point, you are a noodle, and all the better for it. This service lasts an hour, for $39. Lily Foot Massage has a variety of services and packages. Full body massage is $69 for one hour. Right now they are offering opening specials, including $10 off the foot massage, and $14 off a full body massage, so if you’re needing a little pampering, now is the time to do it. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (206) 535-8196. Lily Foot Massage is located at 8451 S.E. 68th Street, Suite 103.

Not saying goodbye By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
Zeke Halilovic is adamant he is not saying goodbye. It’s more of a long “see you later.” The longtime soccer coach and trainer on Mercer Island has been an Island fixture in the soccer community for the past eight years, but he will be returning home to Switzerland next month. “I’m sad to leave, but I’m telling myself I’ll go home for a year and then come back,” said Halilovic. “I’m coming back; don’t write me off. It’s been a great experience. I came here when I was 26 years old after playing professionally and moved all around, so this is kind of my first station that I really think of as home. I have great friends on Mercer Island, and it’s something I will always cherish. To me this is the first home feeling that I’ve built with my family together.” Halilovic has touched thousands of lives over the course of his time on the Island, helping many children become not only solid soccer players, but better people. “Our program is so much better and our children are lucky,” said Julie Crow, a parent of two children whom Halilovic has coached, and a personal friend to him. “It would be impossible to say it simply
(how much he has meant to us). I know he installed confidence in my kid and I know he did that for a lot of kids. The gift he gave was all of himself, 110 percent, 24/7, 365 days a year.” “It’s going to be tough to replace him,” said Roy Umlauf, who worked with Halilovic for years as a coach and board member for the club. “He was the face of Mercer Island soccer for most of the kids on the Island. He was willing to fill in whatever kind of role we needed.” It was kind of a stroke of luck that Halilovic ever even came to Mercer Island. Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Halilovic grew up in Switzerland. He first came to the United States through an exchange program for high school, hoping he would go to New York, Chicago or Miami (because every kid dreams of New York, meeting Michael Jordan in Chicago and the beaches of Miami), but instead was placed in Louisville, Ky. “That’s one of the luckiest things to happen to me, that I ended up being in Louisville, Ky., because I was hosted by a great family and had a great time,” he said. “I played soccer in high school.” Halilovic said he was supposed to go home in order to play with the U17 national team, but because of his status in the U.S.
Mercer Island rEporter | www.mi-reporter.com couldn’t leave, so a friend who lived and trained soccer players on Mercer Island invited him out west. “My first contact with Mercer Island was through soccer,” he said. After playing for the Huskies for a year, he headed back home, where he played professionally for five years in three countries, before injuries forced him to stop. “I had an injury — two times having surgery on my heel and ankle due to my injuries, and now I have a daughter and wife and we’re enjoying each other,” he said of wife Lucy and Emma, his daughter. So when the opportunity to help his brother as an exchange student came up, Halilovic immediately knew the place to go — Mercer Island. That trip, which was only supposed to be for a year or two, spanned eight years. “I came here to bring my brother as an exchange student to Mercer Island and I said, why don’t I help out with the club just while I was here with him to spend time with him,” said Halilovic. “The person who started everything on Mercer Island was John Addison — that’s an important name because he’s my second father here. He said there is more soccer than Samir can handle, why don’t we start an academy — you’d be doing the same thing. I said, great, why don’t we do it. I went back

Unlike other soccer clubs in the area, the Mercer Island club runs theirs with volunteer coaches and Halilovic is the professional trainer, in charge of running the programs and preparing the players. “It’s a full-time job; it’s a lovely job,” he said. “I wish we were in San Diego because my office is outdoors and I wish it was sunny outside so I could spend more time dry, but I still love every minute

After fighting their way through the district bracket, earning the No. 5 seed going into the state regional round, the Mercer Island boys basketball team fell to Kennedy Catholic on Friday night, ending the season. The Lancers, which entered the tournament as the District 3 champions, won 73-67 over the Islanders. The Islanders also lost senior guard Sam Cohn for the game, after he broke his hand in the days leading up to the match. Kennedy started the game off with a 25-17 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Islanders fought back, holding Kennedy to 16 points while scoring 14 of their own, to close the deficit to 10 going into halftime.
After the break, the Islanders surged, posting a 16-14 third quarter coming within eight points of the lead, and expanded on it in the fourth quarter, when the team hit 20 points. With 3:52 left in the game, the Islanders were closing in, down by three in a 63-60 game, but then Brian Miller and Jeff Lindquist both fouled out, and with free throw points, the Lancers pulled away for the final time. Senior Miller had 20 points during the game, while fellow senior Sean Hughes added 12. Parker Scott had nine points, Kaleb Warner and Lindquist had eight, Joe Rasmussen had six and Chris Lawler added four. The Islanders were 21-9 this season and finished 11-3 in league play.

of it.” The passion he has for the game has not gone unnoticed by the parents and families of Mercer Island soccer players. “He’s a friend of many people on the Island, and this will take a toll,” said Umlauf. “He is a great coach at understanding the game and teaching them. He has incredible knowledge and insight into the game.” For the longtime trainer, its impossible to pick out a favorite memory from his time on the Island, but one of his favorite things is when former players come back to say hello. To Halilovic it’s akin to raising 1,600 kids every year. “So I always tell them when I want them to be good in soccer, to be as good as they can. My enjoyment and reward is when I see a kid I’ve been training for six years, he’s gone off to college, and he comes back and has become a great guy. He’s a good man. I always approach the kids as if they are my own kids,” said Halilovic. “Sometimes people might think I was mean, but it was like they
were my kids and from my field they might go apply for a job and I want them to be challenged and learn how to accept the challenge, the defeat and how to get up from a failure. Because the score in soccer for me was never about winning or losing, it was always about success and failure, and I always try to make my guys a success in their personality. That’s the beauty of it.” While his family is already back in Switzerland, Halilovic is finishing up a few projects and will leave in the middle of March. “He will be greatly missed,” said Crow. “We’ve been really fortunate to know him, and on some level I’m sure he wasn’t as appreciated as he should have been.”
Reception The Mercer Island Youth Soccer Club will hold a reception in honor of Zeke Halilovic on Monday, March 5, starting at 7:15 p.m. at the Mercerwood Shore Club. All are welcome and encouraged to stop by.

Memorial for late tennis coach not forgotten By Linda Ball
lball@mi-reporter.com
Former Mercer Island High School tennis coach Joyce Hedlund was like “a second mom to everyone,” said Matthew Sedlacek, who graduated from MIHS in 2010. That same school year, in November 2009, Hedlund died suddenly from a stroke at age 66. It was always her desire to have the tennis courts at the school lit. Sedlacek and another of Hedlund’s players, Gabe Davis, started a fund dubbed “Light up the Courts,” to raise money in Hedlund’s honor. The estimated price tag at the time was $285,000. The Mercer Island Schools Foundation agreed to handle the money, making it tax deductible, but the young men fell far short of raising that much money. They graduated and passed the project on to Jared Thomas and Erica Baska, who made it their senior culminating project the next school year. Carolyn Holm with the foundation said so far about $9,400 has been raised, not nearly enough to light up the courts. Now the project has been taken over by senior Sophia Gage, who is being mentored by Sedlacek, who is still involved, although he is at Washington State University studying finance. “During our senior year, Joyce passed away and we wanted to honor her,” Sedlacek said. He said she helped him heal after a bad boating accident he was in, among other things. Not only was she a coach, but a listening ear and someone to talk to
if needed. Gage has also turned the effort into her senior culminating project. The lights have dimmed, however, and now Gage is concentrating on a fitting memorial to Hedlund. Her plan is to install a large stone from Marenakos Rock Center in Issaquah with engraving, offset by some benches, creating a sort of peaceful place to remember Hedlund. Gage said she is negotiating with the School Board as to where to put the memorial. She said the board would like to see it near the tennis courts; superintendent Gary Plano said a location has yet to be determined, and the decision on the memorial and its location will need to go before the School Board. Gage said she plans to contact all the donors to the project to explain where the money is going, since the lights were just too expensive. Gage met Hedlund when she was just a freshman at MIHS. “I was fortunate to have her as a coach in my freshman year on the varsity team,” Gage said. She said she was involved in the project before deciding to make this her senior project. Gage said she hopes this works out soon, as she would like to see it wrapped up before she graduates. “I really hope to get this done,” she said. “It’s a simple idea, but there’s a lot of checkpoints to reach.” The district’s head of maintenance, Tony Kuhn, said a grassy area on the east side of the swimming pool near the path to the

It sounds like Sophia is doing her piece; I’m confident I can get this done for her.”

portfolio investments and providing adequate diversification. Another important aspect of Buffett’s philosophy is the need to plan and think for the long-term. By thinking long-term, as Buffett does, the client has a much-improved chance of achieving his/her financial goals and mitigating the impact of short-term market fluctuations. We would hasten to point out, however, that as financial planners, we do believe bonds and commodities, such as gold, play an important role. Why? Because these assets have low correlations with stocks and thereby offer the benefits of diversification. By incorporating stocks and bonds together in a diversified portfolio, you can provide the growth necessary for a successful plan, while reducing the volatility of the portfolio. Bob Toomey is vice president, research, with S.R. Schill & Associates, a financial planning and investment firm located on Mercer Island.
