Malcolm John Fraser, the assistant pastor of Enumclaw’s Sound Doctrine Church, was formally charged Thursday afternoon, March 22, with first-degree rape of a child. Fraser, 39, was arrested by Enumclaw police March 20. The King County Prosecutor’s Office requested bail of $150,000. Fraser posted bail Thursday and was released.

An Enumclaw detective interviewed the teenager the afternoon of March 19 at the police station. She indicated Fraser had lived with her family from 2005 to 2006. Police Blotter IN THE WAY: A state employee contacted Enumclaw and Buckley police the morning of March 22, concerned about someone standing in the lanes of travel on the bridge over the White River. Officers contacted the man, who was taking pictures. He agreed to stay out of the travel lanes. BARKING DOGS: An officer responded to a Griffin Avenue address March 22 after hearing of constantly-barking dogs that were annoying people in a neighboring complex. The manager of the complex reportedly has a history of contacting the dogs’ owner, complaining of the noise, with no success. An officer confirmed the barking and left a calling card at the unattended residence. SCHOOL ASSAULT: Police responded at 5:30 p.m. March 22 to Thunder Mountain Middle School following a report of a fourth-degree assault. MORE PROWLS: A Loraine Street resident reported a vehicle prowl shortly before 4 a.m. March 21. Golf clubs were taken. Later that morning, a Clovercrest Street resident told police $600 worth of stereo equipment had been taken from a vehicle during the night. The afternoon of March 21, a Harding Street resident told police of a vehicle prowl that resulted in no damage and nothing taken. Another prowl in which nothing was taken was reported by a Pioneer Street resident, but another Pioneer Street resident called in a theft from a vehicle. SCAM ALERT: An out-of-state resident called Enumclaw police March 21, reporting a local address had been used in conjunction with a fraudulent check that had been sent as part of a possible scam. The caller’s teenage daughter had been targeted via the Internet.
PASTOR FROM 1 an inappropriate manner. Fraser “would cover her mouth so she would keep quiet and not yell,” according to the report. The victim said she attempted to fight, but Fraser would threaten to hurt the child or her mother. The victim said Fraser informed her she would go to hell if she told anyone what was occurring. Fraser was arrested at the office of Winepress Publishing, 1730 Railroad St. in downtown Enumclaw the afternoon of March 20. Sound Doctrine Church owns that business, as well as Salt Shaker Christian Bookstore, another downtown venture. The report stated Fraser initially asked no questions and made no statements while being arrested. He later said he wanted to cooperate
with the investigations but would not speak to police without an attorney present. The police report stated Fraser was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and grew up in Elgin, a northern province of Scotland. Fraser told the investigating officer he had a valid passport and a passport from Scotland that had expired. He told the officer he became a citizen in 2009 or 2010. The prosecutor asked the court to order Fraser to surrender his passport because “the State is concerned that the defendant will flee the jurisdiction if released.” Reach Dennis Box at dbox@courierherald.com or 360-825-2555 ext. 5050. ontrary to what you may suspect, some aspects of the Republican party used to appeal to me. On occasion, I even voted for Republican candidates, especially in state elections. But this was before the extreme conservative wing of the Party co-opted and seemingly expelled most cultural and economic moderates. A recent Wall Street Journal poll indicates, during the past 10 years, the number of Republicans who describe themselves as moderates had declined from 31 percent to 23 percent. The number who call themselves “liberal Republicans” has nearly vanished. It appears as though much of the GOP base has turned into an ultraconservative assortment of fringe groups like the Tea Party, Christian fundamentalists, creationists, warmongers, anti-science zealots, racists and narrow-minded billionaires. You doubt that? Well then, let’s examine some of the proposals of candidate Rick Santorum. Rick is against the “factories we call public schools” and suggests mothers shouldn’t work outside the home, but instead should stay home and home-school their children. He’s against colleges, branding them “indoctrination mills that destroy religious faith.” He’s also against daycare centers because, as noted, mothers should stay home and raise their kids. He thinks global warming is “phony theology” and “junk science.” He’d keep our troops in Afghanistan until they achieve “victory” – however he might define that term – even, apparently, if it takes 20 years. He’s against contraception because “it’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that are counter to how things are supposed to be.” Of course, he’s against pro-choice and feels abortion should be completely and absolutely outlawed, even in cases of rape and incest. So, how about Mitt Romney? Of the present Republican presidential candidates, isn’t he a bit more moderate? Yeah, a bit. Still, Mitt would actually expend all the time and work necessary to pass a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage and that proposition, in

DISTURBANCE: Police were alerted at 12:38 a.m. March 20 to a disturbance on the second floor of a Griffin Avenue hotel, where a tenant was refusing to have guests leave. Officers responded, all the guests departed and the issue was settled. CYCLE HEIST: The theft of a motorcycle and multiple other items from a Chinook Avenue address was reported March 20. DAMAGE DONE: A resident in the vicinity of Fell Street reported March 19 she had been told by a neighbor a garbage truck had struck her vehicle. An officer responded and confirmed the damage done. NO EMERGENCY: After receiving a 911 call, officers responded March 19 to a Washington Avenue address. They found a baby playing with an old cell phone. MOVE ALONG: A Pioneer Street resident called police March 18, reporting an intoxicated man on the ground in front of the home. Initially, the subject was not cooperative; he became more agreeable when given a ride home. SUSPICIOUS PERSON: A woman contacted police March 17, reporting she had been approached by a man requesting assistance. She declined, but the man was adamant that she help him, even after the woman pointed out another man that might offer some assistance. The suspect was in an older, black van; he was described as about 60 years old with a gray beard and blackened teeth. The victim was contacted; the suspect was not located. ONE-CAR ACCIDENT: A citizen arrived in the police station lobby at 5:15 a.m. March 16, reporting a one-car accident in the Fairway Hills neighborhood above the golf course. An Enumclaw officer found the car, which had been driven into a guard rail. The driver stated he had failed to negotiate a curve while attempting to input an address into his GPS unit. King County authorities were advised of the damage done.

Parenthood program. Many, if not most, Republicans don’t like Mitt; first, because he isn’t conservative enough and, second, because they don’t think he can win the November election. I agree with the second point. His personality just seems too flat and robotic. I don’t think he could win a local mayoral race, let alone the presidency. Though Ron Paul no longer seems to be a viable candidate, he still commands a significant following in Republican circles – and he’s the most radical of all. He calls himself a “libertarian” Republican and, as such, he would legalize drugs, everything from pot to heroin. (This might be an idea that’s worth exploring, but it certainly isn’t a position that will get him elected president.) He’d scrap many cabinet posts, including the departments of Interior, Education and Commerce. Then he’d do away with the Federal Reserve, Social Security and income tax. (Talk about a reactionary!) I mean, really friends, what the hell’s happened to the Republican Party? What few moderate Republicans are left have asked the same question. They’re as shocked and appalled as I am. Rudy Giuliani observes that the GOP “looks like it isn’t a modern party.” No lesser politician than Jeb Bush, youngest of the Bush Dynasty, wonders if he’s still in the same party. “I used to be a conservative,” he recently said, but apparently he isn’t sure anymore. So it goes.

Christianity and how God’s people seem unable to humble themselves at the foot of the cross, right along with two of the Marys and John and several other disciples, and the centurion, to simply avow that, “Truly He was the Son of God” and we’re with him, and that’s all! No political, economic or moral agenda, just the simple and profound spiritual agenda: “I will let Jesus Christ be Absolute Lord of every detail of my life!” I bank my life that we could feed the world, and bring peace to it, and heal every broken relationship, on this one agenda alone. So I have only one hope for myself, and anyone close to me: I immerse myself into listening to the Holy Spirit and following Jesus like a true Christian. There is no other hope for this violence-ridden landscape we call our current world. No political, economic, moral or religious movement is going to pull us out of our self-destructive nosedive into our own self-constructed mud hole. Yet I refuse to nosedive and self destruct, and I refuse to live in mud hole, because I choose to live in the beauty God has intended for us here, never mind what chaos ensues around me, and then, one day out of time, to live in the next phase of beauty, again. Got peace? Yes! Want some? Shalom! The Rev. Dale Pratt can be reached at dale@cedarcommunitychurch.org.

folk—he surely did—but he carefully guarded himself from getting pulled into stuff that was only ancillary to his divine call. He didn’t come here to argue with the authority of the government, or to evade or avoid taxes, or to straighten out family feuds, or to right all the wrongs of his prevailing culture. He came to foment reconciliation between mankind – each individual, regardless of gender or race or color or stature or country of origin or familial background or propensity of any sort or degree of goodness or degree of badness – to our creator God, who has every intention of intimate and personal involvement with, and of meddling in, every one of these individual lives, in absolutely every detail of our personal lives, to bring us to life, which will then straighten out all the other issues! I’m gonna vote – I have no clue for whom! And I’m personally incensed at the total disregard for reasonable accountability in either morality or finances – or any other area of their personal or public lives for that matter – of our political figures worldwide! I’m sickened by the carnage that one person foists on another all around the world, in every culture, at every economic level, in either the darkness of a personal encounter or on the world stage for all to witness. And I’m most appalled at what we call

Say no to algae growth Budding aquarium enthusiasts crop up every day. They’re anxious to head to the pet store and pick out a tank, accessories and the fish they hope will thrive in a new environment. While it’s important to know which fish can cohabitate and the proper pH and temperature to keep the tank, one important lesson all people who have an aquarium should know is how to keep algae in check. Algae is a naturally occurring plant life that creates a green film on the inside of tank walls and
Protect pets from parasites
Welcome back to Buckley Veterinary Hospital’s monthly pet care column. This month, we are highlighting the significance of protecting and screening your furry family member for internal parasites. We will be shedding some light on the importance of regular fecal screens and preventative parasite control for your pets. on plants and decorations inside the aquarium. Just like any other plant, algae requires a few things to thrive, including light, water and food. Although a certain amount of algae in the water can be a beneficial food source for some species of fish, an overabundance can be unsightly and take over the aquarium. There are a few reasons why algae can grow unchecked. • Algae needs light to survive. Leaving a fluorescent aquarium light on too long or placing the
Human intestinal parasites in the U.S. have been virtually eradicated by improvements in sewage management, availability of clean drinking water, control of zoonotic parasites in food animals and the routine anthelmintic treatment of the human population. The truth can be an elusive thing

Spent Sunday watching a Book TV show I recorded on my DVR. I liked the show because I could listen to it while I made some brown and green food even God wouldn’t eat. Thanks to my friendly doctor, that is what my life has devolved into – Sundays spent making food without names or other features you can identify. The Book TV show peaked the fun meter, however. Jeffery Rosen, Harvard law professor and an editor with The New Republic, was talking about the clash of the privacy, search and seizure and other Constitutiona l Dennis Box issues in the curEditor rent world of Google, Facebook and other social media. The program will be broadcast again Saturday on C-SPAN. I think it is worth listening to and considering. Will our Constitution address the Internet world of social media? Does the power of Google and the company’s decisions on what hits the top of search sites trouble us? The collection of information by Facebook and other sites brings up a myriad of privacy problems and the questions once again point back to our Constitution. Rosen posed an intriguing problem. The Constitution protects us from government search and seizure and invasions of our privacy, but when it comes to social media and Internet sites things get cloudy. So a potential employer can demand to see an applicant’s personal Facebook page, which opens up a privacy can of worms. If some company wanted to look into my life through Facebook for a job, I can see how the interview would go.
Just a short note in reference to Ms. Van Veen’s previous letter to the editor (Courier-Herald, March 21). She ended her article by stating that no one should be ridiculed, ignored, hated, beaten or killed because of who they love. However, in the first paragraph of her article she referred to the Bible as “ancient writings of ignorant sheep herders?” What about those of us who love the Bible and esteem as the written word of God, Ms. Van Veen? I guess it is (by your standards) OK to ridicule some people, right? Diana Hammermeister Bonney Lake

LAST WEEK: Do you believe the Legislature will agree on a budget?
Writer cites tolerance, then offers ridicule
City shirks responsibility to protect its resources As past chairman of the Library Advisory Board, I agree wholeheartedly with the March 12, 2012, letter to the editor, “City should not lose control of its public library.” Over the past two years, the city mayor and her administration along with City Council, have failed to follow their own rules, their own resolution to have an open and full review of all funding options available for the city library. Instead, they want to rid themselves of the responsibilities of the library and are fixated on annexation that will allow King County to increase the taxes on all Enumclaw citizens. The city’s proposal to annex the library to King County Library System has been railroaded through with no consideration of less-costly alternative funding options. Since the city
initially had no idea of how annexation would work or its effect on the library, the Library Advisory Board made honest efforts to fully investigate the pros and cons. At the request of the city administrator, the board provided the city with a detailed list of questions and concerns. After months of not receiving a response from the city administrator, I personally handed the same list to the mayor Dec. 20, 2010, and the Library Board still has never had a response. This administration and council have been unwilling to take the responsibility for which they have been elected – to govern our city’s assets, not to outsource at every opportunity. They simply want nothing more to do with a city-operated library, and their threats that the only other option is to close the library are just that – threats. “Save Our Library” means a no vote on annexation of the library to KCLS. Let’s put the responsibility back onto the City Council. Fred Fleischmann Enumclaw
Support annexation, don’t put library at risk On our city’s website, cityofenumclaw.net, you will find a library FAQ link that clearly defines the dilemma we now face in trying to maintain a viable sustainable community library. The Courier-Herald has been diligent in reporting the struggle faced by our mayor, city administration and council to maintain basic services as revenues continually decline. Over a year ago, our council made the hard decision that the expense of operating our library significantly cut into money needed to provide for the health and safety of our citizens. A
100 Years on the Plateau!
very difficult decision but a realistic one as it became clear that, by merging our library with King County Library System, we could not only maintain our library but also see it become a stronger resource and sustainable for many years to come. It would no longer be dependent upon stipends from the city that could vary year to year. Our library is the center of our community. It is used by all ages from within city limits and from the surrounding countryside. Its importance to the development of our children is without question. For our students at all grade levels and their teachers, our library provides the essential center for research, homework, career and college planning and access to computers not always available to them at home. So what is the dilemma? If we decline the opportunity to join our library with KCLS and no other way is found to pay for its continued operation, we residents of Enumclaw lose not only our own library but also access to all libraries in King County. The situation poses an even greater dilemma for our school district. Imagine a situation where students and teachers, who live in Enumclaw, have no access to any library and students and teachers, who live in the county outside of Enumclaw, have continued access to KCLS. Read the library Frequently Asked Questions on our city’s website. It’s all there. It’s up to us to decide. Do we vote yes for KCLS or do we do we gamble on the uncertain future of our library and our community? Dick Hughes Enumclaw

Joining library system would maintain quality Library annexation is the current topic of conversation in Enumclaw. Newspaper articles, a list of frequently asked questions and answers, and letters to the editor of The CourierHerald are being circulated. Comments are appearing in Patch. Conversations in coffee shops and on the street are ongoing. A decision will be made by April 17. It is hard to imagine Enumclaw, situated in the midst of great scenic beauty, a place where family values and quality of life are a priority, without a library. Yet that may happen if annexation to King County Library System (KCLS) is not successful. A lt hou g h Cit y Administration has not said what will happen if there is no annexation, they have not identified funds for operation past 2012. We need our library. It serves every segment of our community. I’d like to share with you my observations of what occurs regularly in the library. An old gentleman comes in each morning to read the daily paper or look up stock market quotations; a young mother with a baby in a stroller and a toddler in the children’s section picks out books to take home, the

mother spends time to read to the children, the toddler is so excited to be able to take books home. Adults are checking out mysteries and magazines and current books; teenagers are browsing in the young adult section and chatting about “The Hunger Games.” At all times there are persons of all ages on the computers and often there is a waiting list. Homeschooled children and private school children come to the library for resource material. Meetings often occur in the two meeting rooms and the Friends of the Library book sale occurs once a year. The busy comings and goings of all ages serves as a fitting backdrop to the magnificent monument that celebrates Enumclaw’s logging heritage, which has come to identify our city in the minds of many of our visitors. One might say that the library serves as Enumclaw’s cultural center. If annexation to KCLS fails, there may be no library in Enumclaw. Another thought to consider: city residents will no longer be able to use their KCLS card and will not be able to purchase one through KCLS. Annexation to KCLS will allow continuation of library activity and improve upon a well-established “crown jewel” in the heart of our community. I encourage you to vote “yes” for annexation. By doing so, you will secure continued quality of life for come from the Internet, a business or a collection of zealous group thinkers. I often see the censorship problem raise its head at city council meetings, and it is seldom from government officials. It usually comes from folks who want to make certain only their side of the story is told. I do believe our Constitution will address the issues very well. The problem is for everyone to stay involved and willing to listen … and learn. Truth can be elusive, particularly if we want it to

Column by Rep. Cathy Dahlquist 31st Legislative District
It’s your government: Let me know your thoughts
The cross-river rivals White River and Enumclaw have been an awesome rivalry for decades. I have lived in Buckley all my 50 years and as far back as I can remember this game was one to look forward to. There are many generations of Hornets, White River and Enumclaw, that know and love this rivalry. As a fan, former player and parent of players of White River Hornets football I was very disappointed when it was announced by the recently resigned Enumclaw coach that they weren’t interested in playing White River. I was very happy to hear Athletic Director Chris Gibson and his counterpart in Enumclaw appreciate the history of this rivalry and have made the effort to bring it back. Thank you to all that have renewed this decadesold tradition. Wade Green Buckley
It is wonderful to represent the people of the 31st Legislative District. At the beginning of this session I asked our caucus to spend time as a team to identify our priorities of government. Until you have a clear understanding of what your priorities are, it is difficult to draft a budget. The House Republican Caucus did just that. We spent many days working together to identify what our government should provide by setting our priorities. We landed on three key focuses: Education is our first and foremost priority, followed by taking care of our most vulnerable populations (meaning those that cannot take care of themselves) and public safety to ensure community protections. I appreciate hearing your thoughts and opinions, so today I am asking for your feedback on what you would choose as your top three government spending priorities. Government works for you. I hope you find this brief column informative and I look forward to hearing from you. Update on special session After a 17-day special session in December and a full 60-day regular session that began Jan. 9, the Legislature could not agree on a state operating budget that would close the $1 billion spending gap. As I write this column, we are in the second week of the special session, which began on March 12, with no visible progress or clear (and agreeable) path to a sustainable budget in sight. However, I remain hopeful that ongoing talks among budget leaders will allow for some needed compromise. Many of you have called or e-mailed me with questions about how the budget will impact a service or program. You will have to stay tuned to my next column or attend a town hall meeting after special session to get those clear answers since a budget has still not been passed. My goal is to always be helpful and available to you. I want to encourage you to take this opportunity and share your thoughts with me on a couple questions: What would be your top three priorities if you were writing the state budget?

The White River High boys had an easy time defeating two track and field opponents the afternoon of March 21, whipping the Washington Patriots 81-52 and the Steilacoom Sentinels 92-42. The double-dual meet, hosted by Steilacoom in less-than-perfect weather conditions, was a South Puget Sound League 2A affair. The White River girls had a tougher
time, losing to Steilacoom 69-58. When the meet closed, the Hornet girls trailed Washington 68-63, but the pole vault competition had not taken place. Coach Jerry Scheidt was certain his girls would get the win over the Patriots once the pole vault was completed. For the Hornet boys, event winners were Marcus Dickson in both the 400 and 3,200 meters; Austin May, 800 meters; Chris Fisher, 1,600 meters; Devin Liebel, 300-

The White River High girls rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Fife Trojans Thursday afternoon in tennis competition. The Hornets’ Courtney Hall had no trouble at No. 1 singles, defeating Kara Kinolt 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 singles, WR’s Laura Miculinich was a 6-1, 6-3 victor over Mallory Davis. The Hornets also won two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 2 spot, Christina Ramous and Riley Burleigh won 6-2, 6-1, and at No. 3, Regan Speyer and Brianna Lyver were 6-2, 6-1 winners. White River’s only setback came at No. 1 doubles, where Annie Shindle and Katie Durrant dropped a long, tough match, 7-6, 6-4. The White River High girls downed Clover Park 4-1 the afternoon of March 21. In No. 1 singles play, Hall easily defeated the Warriors’ Ga-Young Jin 6-0, 6-0. White River swept all three doubles matches. In

Roundball at the Rock is a success By John Leggett The inaugural Roundball at the Rock charity basketball event for the Rotary First Harvest, staged at Bonney Lake High School Saturday, is officially in the archives. With the help of about 100 people – including, fans, coaches, players, volunteers and financial supporters – the program went off without a hitch and was a success. Considering the picturesque sunny afternoon on which the game was contested, with makeup baseball and softball games being played and yard work to get started on, when all was said and done the event raised about $200 and will consequently mean 6,000 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables being trucked into to area food banks for the underserved on the Plateau and the valley below. The main event between The Couriers (blue shirts) and The Heralds (green shirts) was highly entertaining using, as a yardstick, the old sports
axiom that offense sells tickets and defense wins games. Fans saw whale of a hoop fest as a total of 200 points were tallied in this shoot-out that admittedly didn’t include a preponderance of defense, but did see The Heralds prevail 113-87. When the confrontation first got underway it looked as if The Couriers would dominate. Due to circumstances beyond the control of coaches Rick Tripp and Rob Thayer, the green team was outnumbered 2-to-1. However, even though the fiercer members of The Heralds, Derek “The Mad Bomber” Lund, Tony “The Tiger” Chynoweth, Drake “Tall Boy” Radenmacher and Perry “The Optimist” Rockwood weren’t allowed to play under their old and new head coach Kellen Hall (who was gracious enough to help coach The Couriers) due to a bizarre WIAA rule, the green team’s shooting percentage from the floor was tremendous. That factor alone was enough to keep the blue
squad at arm’s length until reinforcements could arrive in the form of 6-foot, 7-inch Bonney Lake senior post Mike Gould, who came into his own this season behind the learned guidance of Panther head coach Rob Smith, to help the black and teal advance to the postseason in 2012. At any rate, after Gould showed up it was Katie-bar-the-door, as the inside presence of having two 6-foot, 7-inch stilts in the low post in Radenmacher and Gould, simply proved to be overwhelming and the talented young ladies playing for The Heralds – Naomi Pounds (Bonney Lake High) and Fallon Hall (Enumclaw High) – took care of the rest as they played miserly defense and brought the ball down the floor, for the most part distributing to the twin towers. While the coaching tandem of the Buckley Boys’ Rick Tripp and the Spartan Steamroller Rob “Too Tall” Thayer proved to be a winning

White River High had absolutely no trouble picking up a South Puget Sound League 2A victory Friday at Clover Park. The Hornets whipped the host Warriors 14-0 in a contest that was shortened by the 10-run rule. While Hornet hurlers were limiting Clover Park to just two hits, White River was sparked by Dustin France, who scored three runs and knocked in three more. White River is slated to hit the road today, Thursday, to challenge the Washington Patriots. It’s the start of a busy stretch: Friday, the Hornets head to Eatonville; Monday they travel to Fife and, on Tuesday, they host Franklin Pierce.
combination as their crew managed to reach the century mark and beyond, one has to give Hall and Thomas “The Train” Ostrander their due as well. I reminded both of those guys not to just leave Ostrander’s brother-in-laws the DeVries twins and the skilled Zebulon Glissmeyer (also of McDaniel lineage) in there the whole time. Thank goodness Hall and Ostrander threw everything on the floor but the kitchen sink in order to entertain an appreciative crowd, who would have never seen Sumner backcourt ace Tayler Holtman, who displayed
some pretty impressive moves coming off the pine. Also making his presence felt was Panther senior Mikey Berger who had the blue shirts’ cheering section going bonkers with his antics. Berger arrived late with Gould, but had been delegated to the other team, as had Enumclaw girl guard Callie Remitz, who was filling in for an injured Danielle Saltarelli. Saltarelli thankfully consented to sell concessions which this old reporter appreciated more than she will ever know. It was heartwarming to see the basketball community come together in such a helpful way for such a good cause.

Five from EHS receive Superintendent’s Award
Kevin Hanson Staff Writer
Five Enumclaw High students have been recognized for the tireless work they performed to help bring Rachel’s Challenge to Enumclaw. District Superintendent Mike Nelson for the first time presented Superintendent’s Awards to the group. His presentation
came during the March 19 meeting of the Enumclaw School Board. Honored were four seniors – Ryan Chynoweth, Michelle McKinlay, Sara Mongrain and Tyler Salsbury – along with Conner Wells. Wells, a junior, is the student representative to the school board. Nelson said the group “worked nonstop” for months, both at school and in the community, to help make Rachel’s

Nelson presented each student with a medal – which will be worn during graduation ceremonies – commemorating their involvement with the Rachel’s Challenge effort.
Three honored as Students of the Month Enumclaw Rotary Club members honored three Plateau high schoolers as Students of The Month during their March 15 meeting. Emma Pierce, daughter of Trish and Cameron Pierce, was the recipient from Enumclaw High School. A strong academic student taking Advanced Placement coursework, she has a 3.9 high school grade-point average and is a member of National Honor Society. She plays the flute and has participated in jazz band, march-
ing/pep band and wind ensemble; she also has been a member of the pit orchestra for the school musicals as well as a co-principal of the flute section with the Tacoma Youth Symphony. She is planning on attending Pacific Lutheran University in the fall, working toward a degree in music. Mikaela Kilcup, daughter of Tina and Tom Kilcup of Buckley, was the recipient from White River High School. She has taken multiple advanced placement classes, maintains a 4.0 cumulative GPA and is a

A familiar face will join the Enumclaw School District leadership team, as Stephanie Berryhill was recently authorized to take over the district’s human resources operation. Members of the Enumclaw School Board made the hire official during their March 19 meeting. As part of that process, the board changed the title that accompanies the job. Berryhill, who replaces the retiring Kathy Lockyer, takes over as the director of human relations and support services. Lockyer worked as the director of
human resources. Berryhill, who has been employed by the school district since 2001, has worked under two department heads. First she was a human resources specialist; then, starting in July 2005, she was the district’s human resources coordinator. Prior to joining the district, she had held three positions with Group Health. Berryhill earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Washington University and, in 2007, obtained a master’s degree in public administration and human resources from City University.

Flowering trees, shrubs offer seasonal color Marianne Binetti will speak at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sumner’s Windmill Nursery. The topic will be “Color, Color, Color.” Visit www. windmillgarden.com or call 253-863-5843. The last week of March is a call for color as blooming shrubs and flowering trees burst onto the scene. Add the emerging buds of tulips, iris and rock garden plants and the stage is set for the grand performance of a Northwest spring. Here are the most-asked questions about the most popular plants this time of year. When should I fertilize my roses? They are showing lots of new growth and have

trees will bloom in a final gasp at life. I would wait and see if your broken lilac branches flower then enjoy them as cut flowers. Once the plant is finished blooming it will be ready for a trim or drastic makeover with the pruning saw. Lilacs are one of the flowering shrubs that can be pruned to within a few inches of the ground and will resprout with fresh growth. You can also prune back forsythia, quince, spiraeas, buddleias and smoke trees to within a few inches of the ground. It may take a few years before heavily-pruned shrubs bloom again. When should we start seeds indoors and which ones do we start? R.D., Buckley

Each variety is different so there is no easy answer. Read and follow the instructions on the seed pack using May 10 as your date for when “all danger of frost is past” and April 1 as your date for “when soil can be worked” and count backward or forward as the instructions suggest. PETS FROM 6 infected with parasites defecating in their yards and parks. Normal behaviors, like eating directly off the ground, drinking out of puddles, grooming, playing fetch and pouncing and biting items on the ground, predispose dogs and cats to parasitic infections all year long. Dogs and cats also acquire infections from infected prey (e.g., rabbits or mice) or fleas that serve as intermediate or paratenic hosts for different
ALGAE FROM 6 Understanding why algae forms will help you control it effectively. To start, get in the habit of cleaning the tank frequently. Once a week may be acceptable, depending on size. Change 10 to 15 percent of the water in the aquarium every week, which will remove toxins and algae spores.
Wednesday, March 28, 2012 • The Enumclaw Courier-Herald • Page 19 parasites. Year-round internal parasite prevention products do not guarantee a pet will not have intestinal parasites. Recurring developmental stages of parasites, such as hookworms, periodically repopulate the intestine, grow to adulthood and shed eggs in feces. Eggs and cysts produced by parasites may not be susceptible to prevention or treatment by the products being administered. Lastly, owner compliance in administering preventatives may be lacking. Limiting the food sources for algae can also keep it in check. Feed a scant amount of food to fish, only enough that they can eat in five minutes or so. Routinely test the levels in the water and know what the proper levels should be. Make sure to include algae-eating fish in the aquarium. Position the tank out of direct sunlight, which will fuel algae growth.
In addition to having health implications for your furry family member, some of the parasite stages shed in dog and cat feces are zoonotic, so removing them to prevent environmental contamination, thereby protecting you and your family, is important. Larva of hookworms cause nasty skin lesions. Larval stages of ascarids can migrate through the liver, lungs and eyes, causing organ damage and blindness respectively. With an
estimated 3 million to 6 million people infected each year, ascarid infection is one of the leading causes of unilateral blindness. A pet’s history and lifestyle gives some indication as to whether they are more or less likely to have certain parasites. Important factors include age of pet, recent adoption from a shelter, frequenting of dog parks, administration of yearround preventives, hunting, presence of fleas, access to rodents or cockroaches and
presence of other medical problems. Even predominantly indoor pets are likely to be exposed to parasites. The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends that appropriate fecal examinations be performed on puppies and kittens at least two to four times during the first year of life and once or twice per year in adults. We can only hope that someday the task of fecal examination will become exceedingly boring because
we are no longer finding anything. The goal is a negative sample so that, as occurs with people, tests will only be ordered when there is clinical suspicion of infection or a history supporting a need for a fecal examination. Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. As always, send questions, comments, or suggestions for future columns to us at info@buckleyvet.com. Get out there and give your pets plenty of exercise as we head into spring.

Jerry Noordman
“Chief” Jerry Noordman, an Enumclaw resident of 41 years, passed away at Cascade Caregivers in Enumclaw, Washington on March 19th, 2012, at the age of 75. He was born in Fairview, South Dakota to Herman and Josie Noordman on May 13th, 1936. Jerry moved to Washington from Bellflower, California in 1970 with his wife, Phyllis, son Rick, and daughter Jennifer. Prior to that, he had Noordman Trucking, based out of California, in which he hauled hay, John Mansville Pipe, and delivered tomatoes to the Hunts Cannery in California. Moving to Washington, he started a dairy farm. After the sale of the farm, he began Noordman Truck Parts and Salvage, later adding Noordman Tire to the business. Jerry belonged to the American Historical Truck Society. His greatest love was his family and he took great pride in his semi show trucks. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Jerry is survived by his son Rick, daughter Jennifer (and husband Mike Monroe), Grandbabies Brittany, Cody, Amanda, and Jordan. The family would like to express special thanks to the Cascade Caregivers staff for taking such good care of Jerry.
