County gives green light to raceways’ pilot plan BY KRIS HILL khill@covingtonreporter.com

Jason Fiorito is one step closer to seeing his master plan become a reality for Pacific Raceways. The King County Council approved a demonstration project for the Kent motorsports venue early last week.

“We’re ecstatic that the council saw this as a way to give a huge boost to the racing industry in the Pacific Northwest,” said Fiorito, racetrack president. “It will absolutely manifest itself in jobs and (provide) positive economic impact.” Little more than six months

ago Fiorito was fighting to keep alive the master plan, which he unveiled in 2006. Fiorito said the plan now has a fighting chance thanks to the support of County Councilmembers Pete von Reichbauer, who sponsored the legislation, Larry Phillips, Jane Hague and Reagan Dunn.

“(They) took leadership roles in crafting legislation that not only offered the economic impact, but also offered the environmental impact,” Fiorito said. “We’re very pleased that the King County Council voted for jobs and economic impact. It should really be looked at as a community victory

It’s exciting times in London for a Kent teen who plays the starring role in “Billy Elliot the Musical.” Adam Vesperman, 13, has lived in London since last April after he earned the leading role for the production at the Victoria Palace Theatre. “I absolutely love to perform for the audience and bring them emotionally into the story of

Billy Elliot,” Vesperman said through a Skype interview with his mother Robyn Vesperman. “There are many different emotions my character goes through during the show from struggle, depression, mourning the loss of his mother, passion for dance, curiosity, happiness, fun and everything in between.” The show tells an inspirational story about a coal miner’s son who gives up boxing and realizes his ambitions

against the odds to become a ballet dancer. Now Vesperman and the rest of the cast are up for the Laurence Olivier Audience Award. Vesperman, who was profiled in the Kent Reporter last fall, made his debut July 25 at the 1,500-seat theater. He became the 27th boy and just the sixth American to play the title role in the seventh year of the production. [ more VESPERMAN page 2 ]

Carol Kolson has been a volunteer all her life. “I think we all have a responsibility to be good citizens and to give back to the community we work and live in,” she said. “I was raised to be a giving person and have always held that close to my heart.” Kolson, of Kent, is an ambassador for the Southwest Carol Kolson King County Chamber of Commerce and volunteers at the Tukwila’s Habitat for Humanity, the Tukwila Historical Society and the Domestic Abuse Women’s Network (DAWN). “I came to work in Tukwila in 2006 and I started getting involved in the community right away,” Kolson said. “My family inspired me to always put others first.” [ more KOLSON page 5 ]

Bob Zuckos gets to do what he loves every day. The Kent resident opened the first dog daycare and indoor dog park in the city on March 5. “I have been a dog lover all my life, but because of finances I was not able to open my own place,” Zuckos said. “I started thinking about what it would take to create a dog care center and built a place by looking at other dog businesses, weighing the pros and cons.” Once Zuckos felt he could fund his own center, he spent close to two years researching dog care facts and daycare facilities. It took him 11 months to find the right building.

Voting for the resolution were Joos, Hemstad and Dr. Aaron Heide. Dissenting were commissioners Carolyn Parnell and Sue Bowman. According to a release

from the board, Phil Talmadge from the Tukwila law firm Talmadge-Fitzpatrick and a former state Supreme Court justice and state senator, conducted a review of the agreement and determined it “illegally transfers responsibility from the District’s elected Board of Commissioners to an unelected Board of Trustees who are not accountable to the voters of the Hospital District. Talmadge was retained by the board in February to review the contract. ARMY CORPS STARTS SPRING FILL OF HOWARD HANSON DAM Water managers have begun slowly filling the reservoir at Howard Hanson Dam at the headwaters of the Green River. As is typical, Army Corps of Engineers slowly begins annual spring fill of the reservoir in early March, allowing water levels to rise within Howard Hanson Dam’s reservoir. During the roughly three-month refill period, the Corps will conduct testing and in-depth investigations of the dam’s current effectiveness. The plan targets a maximum pool elevation of 1,167 feet above sea level.

Kent man dies in two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in Tukwila REPORTER STAFF

A 20-year-old Kent man died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash at about 1:04 a.m. last Saturday along southbound Interstate 405 in Tukwila, just north of I-5. Nathan E. Crawford, the driver of a 1996 Honda Civic, died after being transported by paramedics to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to a Washington State Patrol media release. A 23-year-old Auburn man, who was a passenger in Crawford’s car, moment a police or fire dispatch is made. The free classes run from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays from April 11 through May 30. The center is at 27519 108th Ave. SE. Registration and additional information about this class is available at www.valleycom.org.

was transported to Harborview with injuries. A 33-year-old Hobart man, the driver of a 2008 Ford Edge SUV, was not injured. A passenger in his car, a 21-year-old Seattle man, was taken to Harborview with injuries. Both drivers and the two passengers each wore seat belts. The two vehicles were traveling southbound on I-405 approaching I-5 in lane two. Crawford’s vehicle attempted to pass the other vehicle and the two collided. The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Drugs or alcohol were involved, according to the State Patrol accident report.

Two Green River levee projects planned by the city Public Works Department will go before the city hearing examiner at public hearings Wednesday, April 4. “The city has done comprehensive geotechnical and hydraulic studies of the river levees and has identified sections of each levee that do not meet federal standards, said Mike Mactutis, city environmental engineering manager, in an email. “The sections that need improvements are not at imminent risk of failure, but do need the improvements done before they become a problem. City staff must go through the hearing examiner for a Shoreline Conditional Use Permit to construct the earthen berm levees. A 10 a.m. hearing will address the State Route 516 to South 231st Way Levee. A 1 p.m. hearing will address the Boeing Levee Project. Both hearings are in Chambers West at City Hall, 220 Fourth Ave. S. For more information, call Planning Services at 253856-5454. According to city documents, the existing levee along State Route 516 will remain. The top of the new, secondary levee will be 20 feet wide and be between 1.5 and 3.5 feet higher than the

existing levee. The intersection of James Street and Russell Road will be shifted approximately 18 feet to the east to accommodate the new levee berm. Near State Route 516, the existing roadway of 62nd Avenue South will be raised to act as the new levee berm. The SR 516 to S. 231st Levee stretches about 2.75 miles. Crews will do the work in phases over a few years. The construction work planned this year is estimated to cost $800,000 and includes rebuilding the intersection of James Street and Russell Road further from the river, Mactutis said. The projects are part of a larger effort by the city to have the entire levee system within city limits accredited by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in order to remove properties behind the levee from FEMA flood maps to reduce development restrictions and flood insurance requirements in the Kent Valley. Crews will remove and relocate existing utilities and remove trees and vegetation. Disturbed areas will be hydro-seeded and off-site tree mitigation will occur upstream on the river at South 261st Street and 80th Avenue South.

ward, it became nearly impossible to begin work on the plan, which would add a racing industrial park, improve the existing road course and generally upgrade the facility. The road course, which was built for 1960s and ’70s era cars, needs to be updated to meet the higher standards of car clubs and other racing groups. Track officials say it needs to be widened, needs more safety zones and needs better runoff in order to

obtain Federal Internacional de Automobile or FIA2 sanctioning. That stamp of approval would attract more high profile events. A new drag strip for club racers has been permitted and construction should start this year. In addition, Fiorito would like to make room for an oval racetrack and allow one million square feet of industrial space with room for retail on the property. To get there, it will be a long process, officials said. Just to get

through all the county requirements could take close to two years, they forecast. Neighbors are concerned about noise and the number of cars Fiorito’s plan could bring in if it becomes a reality. Fiorito’s consultants plan to help organize a citizens advisory board. “This is a time to try to repair some relationships that have been strained through the process,” Fiorito said. “I realize that community input is the only way to make this a successful project, not only from supporters but from opponents.” It’s not required at this phase of the process, Fiorito said, but agrees it is needed. “Including the opponents in the application process would be a nice olive branch and would help rebuild relationships,” he said. “Some folks have expressed interest in getting rid of racing altogether in King County. With those folks, we have to just agree to disagree.” Fiorito hopes to sway some opponents. “For those who think that development is going to come at the expense of more noise and a negative impact to the environment, I believe, given the opportunity to objectively take them through all

Von Reichbauer initially introduced the legislation two years ago. There is much work to be done, Fiorito said. the issues, I will be able to get some support from the people who have been in opposition over the years.” There have been concerns about a revamped track’s environmental impact. Once the master plan application has been submitted, an environmental impact study will ensue, a process that could take about 18 months to complete. That study should address any concerns about the site, Fiorito said. The Fiorito family has owned the facility since it was built in 1960. Jason Fiorito took over operations of the 327-acre site in 2002. Fiorito has spent countless hours and millions of dollars to operate the business, which has a drag strip, road course, large paved pit area and a shifter kart track. He also put in $2.1 million worth of new grandstands on the south side of the drag strip. The quarter-mile strip is home to bracket races, the National Hot Rod Association’s Northwest Nationals and a Division 6 Lucas Oil Series points event. Fiorito plans to privately finance the improvements, which have an estimated $135 million price tag.

Let's support the homeless shelter Perhaps a more fitting shelter for the homeless in Kent would be the streets? I feel the Kent Resource Center would work fine – and I commend the Union Gospel Mission for being interested in financing and operating this resource. Let’s get behind them 100 percent. As for the Hong Kong Market, my loyalty to that store will continue and that issue can be handled with some simple rules for shelter users. The Union Gospel Mission is ready, and I whole heartily support Terry Pallas and his plans. – Jim Teeters

Question of the week:

EDITOR’S NOTE

editor@kentreporter.com 253.872.6600 ext. 27-5050

In today’s competitive business climate, it’s full-throttle to win customers. And like auto racing, it’s keep up or get out of the fast lane. Pacific Raceways, the area’s storied but tattered motorsports venue, finds itself at a crossroads. Track owners and operators must shift into high gear their ambitious plans to renovate or face the likelihood of losing big money, many jobs and the confidence of their diehard fans and racers, many of whom represent generations of families that have competed at the track since the first engine roared to life there in 1959. Last week the track got the green light to explore its future when the King County Council adopted legislation – a call for an exploratory pilot project – to gauge possible redevelopment of the 327-acre site. The track features a quarter-mile drag strip and a 10-turn, 2.25-mile road course. County officials made one thing clear: their action does not approve any expansion of the raceways, it only opens the way for all sides to study Pacific Raceways potential growth. The county initiated the demonstration project with a specific timeline for examining ways to streamline the permitting process for the mixed-use facility and, at the same time, protect the environment. “This legislation permits for a more open and transparent process for large scale developments in King County, such as Pacific Raceways,” said King County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer, sponsor of the legislation. “Our hope for Pacific Raceways is to attract new and retain existing large job-producing businesses in our community. “Pacific Raceways will be a magnet for tourist dollars for South King County, drawing visitors from the Pacific Northwest and beyond,” von Reichbauer added.

In the March 16 edition of the Kent Reporter, Mark Klaas wrote, telling us the HOT lanes were here to stay. He wrote about them as a success story, which is exactly what the Washington State Department of Transportation would like everyone to believe. But are they really? When the city took upon itself to place the giant sandbags that supposedly were necessary due to the unsubstantiated fear of the dam being compromised, we went along with what the news and the mass hysteria they created and allowed the sandbags to be placed on property downtown will inevitably harm Kent and all the investment and revitalization efforts that have been made. While this issue has been controversial, we have seen an outpouring of support and passion from those serving the homeless. We urge the city to say no to the Resource Center being used as a homeless shelter of any kind, but to continue to keep the issue of homelessness in Kent at the forefront. to partnering with the city to find solutions. However, struggling to find solutions in a short time frame, while the business community feels threatened for their economic vitality does not create productive dialog. I try and be thankful all the time, not just around November. And after the winter we’ve had, which could only be described as Sybil, I am thankful that the Mariners’ season is here. It means hot dogs on the grill, cold beer and the sound of peanut shells being dropped on the cement at Safeco Field. It means taking yourself back in time for a catch with your dad, tracking high fly balls against a blue sky and your mom yelling at you to come in for dinner. It’s about watching kids play the game, and sometimes those kids are 22 year olds who possess a 95-milean-hour fastball. We who love baseball started out loving it as kids. We had trouble as toddlers holding onto and throwing a football, but we could grip a plastic bat. And dad didn’t mind so much hitting us ground balls in Little League. As long as he could stash his beer in his back pocket, he ran us through our paces. He watched with pride as

I got bigger and showed the good fundamentals. Little League, junior high school and then high school, coming to as many games as he could. Then one day at the end of my sophomore season, I had a discussion with my coach about playing time. Full of myself, I told my coach that if I didn’t get more playing time at third base, I didn’t see the point of coming out next year. He said he understood. I went home and told my dad I was quitting baseball. He tried to reason with me, but I was too bullheaded. I saw the disappointment in his eyes that never left him.

I played golf my last two years in high school and had a blast. Every year baseball comes around and the boys get to play again. The sun’s out (I hope) and life gets renewed with the hope of a winning season. It means fresh starts and one more a chance to run on green grass, turn a double into a triple, yell at the umpire from more than 200 feet away, telling the guy next to you that you can’t believe he missed that call. It’s fathers and sons, beer and peanuts, hot dogs and garlic fries. It’s 30-year-old guys who still bring a glove to games. Yes, thank goodness baseball is back. It couldn’t have come too soon.

City sandbags in its removal efforts

Boys of spring are back MY VIEW

Did it? What did it cost to install this system? At that rate, how long will it take to pay it off ? I would bet we make a major change to 167 long before we break even. WSDOT claims the HOT lanes “improve travel times for everyone traveling this corridor. Do they? Only if compared to the HOV lanes that existed prior to HOT lane installation. Sure, they help those who care to pay extra, but what about the general traveling public? If you are not in the HOT lane, is your travel time reduced over what it would be if that lane was open for all? HOT lanes exist because the HOV lanes were underutilized. But rather than give them up, this system was created. I use the southbound HOT lane at 7 in the morning (I have a passenger). On most days I cannot see a single car in front of me. The gap is that large. At any non-rush hour time, HOV/HOT are underutilized, and the general public is penalized because free use of the lane is not available to all. I know on 167 the lane is open after 7 p.m., but don’t

by our home. We have never flooded and were out of the flood plain, but were told these were necessary. For two years, we have been in danger since the bags were placed to the edge of the road. When we back out of our driveway, we cannot see the oncoming traffic. Several near misses have made us more than nervous. We have contacted the city about removing the three bags that are at the edge of road. We have been told that they will not remove these because there is no money for the removal, and they need to wait until the King County Council can meet to see if they can help with funding the removal. In the meantime, we and the public are at risk. Should a car slide off the road or leave the road at high speed – which has happened already at this exact location, taking out our fence – the taxpayers would no doubt be paying even more money when the lawsuit for this accident is pursued. We just asked for their help to make our driveway safe, but apparently we need to have an “emergency before we will be heard. – Delite Morris

cross that double-white line. The HOV/HOT lane should only exist – if at all – during rush hour when the original definition of carpool is being met. Now DOT has won approval to add another lane to I-405 and, when completed, I-405 will contain two restricted lanes in each direction. If they were only HOV lanes, they too would be underutilized. So what is the solution? Make them HOT lanes, of course. I’ll bet we don’t even come close to paying for that lane with the HOT revenues. I sure hope everyone enjoys the way DOT is spending the monies you thought went to rapid transit. – Dan Shields

Raceways will profit at their expense. Track supporters argue that a large majority of residents moved within earshot after the track was built. More and more homes went up long after the track was established, they say. Nevertheless, the county vows to ensure public opportunity to provide input on the future development and operating standards. Such a process will tie up the project but the review and monitoring process would ensure compliance with the law and the executed development and operating agreements. Track officials need to compromise, to work to mitigate noise and address other concerns. They need to honor curfews, offer “Silent Mondays and listen to their neighbors. They need to stay true to permits. Three years will likely pass before any work begins. While neighbors are concerned about the prospects of a reinvigorated racetrack, cities welcome whatever an enhanced venue would bring to business. Auburn and Kent officials support the redevelopment. Closer to home, the Kent strip still runs one of the areas’s last majorracing circuit stops. The National Hot Rod Association continues to visit the Kent strip each summer. The three-day Northwest Nationals remain critical to the track’s financial health. The NHRA enjoys the area, a break from the heat and humidity of other tour stops throughout the country. It also embraces the Puget Sound market, which has been exclusively its own. Yet many of the circuit’s professional drag racers, even some local sportsman drivers, aren’t that wild about the worn strip. Despite the track’s efforts to spruce up the amenities, many pros have questioned the dilapidated facilities. Pacific Raceways, as resolute as it has been for better than 50 years, needs to step it up or fall behind in the race for viability. Without an upgrade, race teams and fans will go elsewhere. School District saves taxpayer dollars BRIEFS Kent School District staff saved taxpayers $1,295,071 in interest payments by refunding bonds approved in 2008. The district refinanced $14,600,000 of Unlimited Tax General Obligation Bonds, Series 2003.The bonds were sold through a competitive bid process with nine bids being received. After a review and analysis of the submitted bids, the district’s Chief Business Officer Richard

Stedry awarded the winning bid for the sale of the bonds to Morgan Stanley & Co. because the company was a responsible bidder offering the lowest true interest cost for the bonds. “Education is our top priority, but we are mindful that the district’s biggest supporters – the people of this community – work hard for every dollar they earn. We are responsible to our taxpayers to take advantage of savings

where we can that allows the district to continue its mission and shows Kent School District is a wise steward of a precious resource,” said Edward Lee Vargas, district superintendent.

Energy program saving money The Kent School District Energy Program has saved more than $147,000 from June to December 2011. Last year, the district started the Energy Program with the goals: maintaining comfort in the learning environment, eliminate

energy waste, save money and create a climate of conservation ensuring sustainable savings. Two district employees are tasked with the responsibility of monitoring energy usage in buildings, analyzing utility bills and working with schools and departments to find ways to save utility costs. These ways can include powering off all equipment; especially during holiday breaks and long weekends – and working with the maintenance department to fine tune when furnaces and lights are coming on in the morning and going off at night. Kent School District is also a

partner in the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Program.

New Kentwood coach Zender a familiar face BY KRIS HILL khill@covingtonreporter.com

Mark Zender couldn’t be happier than he is at Kentwood these days. Zender is the new head coach for the Conquerors baseball squad after spending the previous three seasons coaching the freshman team. During the day he’s a marketing teacher at Kentwood High. “I love what I’m doing, Zender said. “I have an absolute, true passion for teaching marketing. I’m doing exactly what I want to be

view he felt like it was a good fit. “It wasn’t based purely on baseball philosophy, Aarstad wrote. “I asked because I knew that Mark is a good, quality person and someone who will put forth the effort needed to run a baseball program effectively. Mark definitely has the baseball background and head coaching experience that is needed, and he puts both those qualities together, that made him an outstanding candidate to take over. Zender also knows coaching. After graduating from Seattle University he eventually landed a job teaching and coaching at O’Dea in Seattle. Zender, who grew up near Bellingham and earned an education degree at Seattle University where he also played baseball, is coaching a team he knows well. Aarstad had mentioned to

Zender that at some point he may leave Kentwood and wondered if his freshman coach would be interested in pursuing the head coaching position at some point. It seemed like a natural fit when Aarstad did get the job at Riverside for Zender to transition into the head coaching position. “They knew I was qualified and they had seen me teach, Zender said. “I was familiar with the kids. I know all the kids who are juniors and sophomores. Plus, he served as the bench coach for the varsity during the playoffs. “I’ve coached all these kids before, Zender said. “The kids know me and I know them. Aarstad said in an email inter-

Kentlake boys basketball coach Ron Charrier will not return next season, explained the school’s athletic director, Bruce Rick, in an email interview. “Ron’s contract was not renewed, Rick wrote. “We felt it was time for new leadership within the program, because we feel the program can reach a more competitive level than where it’s been in recent years. Kentwood’s boys basketball head coaching position opened up when Brian Davis resigned earlier this month after two years at the helm of that program while Rob Morrow, coach at Tahoma High, resigned from both his teaching and coaching jobs on Feb. 14. Both Morrow and Davis are Kent-Meridian graduates. Rick said he plans to have the position at Kentlake before students return from spring break in mid-April.

Kentlake’s baseball team has a problem: its pitching staff is seven deep. It’s the kind of problem any high school baseball coach would love to have as most teams have a threeman rotation. Beyond that, the Falcons look like a complete team, according to three of the six seniors on the squad. “We’ve just got it to put it together, said infielder Ryan Archibald. “We’ve got everything, we’ve just got to put it together. Everybody’s got to be energized. Archibald, who is going to play football at Central Washington University in the fall, said they learned that lesson in an early season league defeat to Thomas Jefferson when “we came out flat. “We just have more talent this year, Archibald said. “And this year we’re working way harder. We’ve brought warmups and drills from our select teams. That’s made us better. This group, which finished fifth in the South Puget Sound League North Division a year ago and was

bounced from the district playoffs by league rival Kentridge, has an eye on the 4A state title game. Center fielder Austin Pernell, who will play baseball at Washington State next year, declared as he walked back to Kentlake’s practice field on Monday afternoon to look for the Falcons in the state title game. “Our expectations are to win this league, win state, win everything because we have the capability to do it if we play together, Pernell said. “We all have to do our job, to use our talents as a team to do what we’re supposed to do. It’s a bold prediction but one echoed by his teammates. “This year is definitely the year we can do it, Archibald said. “We’ve had a target on our back the last three years. We need to just keep doing what we’re doing, don’t run out of gas too early. Last year we didn’t have it. This year I can definitely see it. Ryne Shelton, who plays second base, said that while the team is still putting all the pieces together they have high expectations.

“We’re still figuring out where everyone’s going to play and what roles they’re going to have once we get into the playoffs, Shelton said. “We have a lot of guys that play select ball for the top teams. We should have a team with a lot of experience. From my point of view, we’re looking a lot better than a lot of other teams in the league. Kentlake, Shelton said, should finish first in the SPSL North. And while there are tough teams on the league schedule, Shelton added, the team is looking forward to the playoffs and taking on opponents such as Jackson and Puyallup. A nonleague loss to Puyallup, which plays in the SPSL South, was one Shelton said Kentlake would like to avenge and they likely will get the opportunity in the league tournament in early May. Pernell said the team has a number of strengths. “Our defense, we have a really good defense, he said. “We have really good hitting. Our lineup is strong from one to nine. And the fact there are six seniors who want to win could be that intangible that could help bring it all together.

teams who are capable of winning a state championship.” Zender believes this team can do it if the players combine the level of talent with discipline and a solid work ethic. “You just get better every day,” he said. “Every guy has to get better every day. You do every little thing right every day. Not just on the field but in school, at home.” After Kentwood beat Kentridge 6-2 on March 22 in the first South Puget Sound League North game, thanks to an offensive outburst in the bottom of the sixth to break up a 2-2 tie, Zender was pleased with the effort. “We have things to work on,” he said. “We’re not where we’ll be at the end of the year. We don’t just show up and win. We have to work. It was a team win and that was a good thing for us.” Right now, though, Zender couldn’t be happier. He’s got the perfect teaching job and he’s coaching baseball. “I’m just a baseball junkie,” he said. “So, we just smile and play baseball.”

3A state tournament three times. For 20 years, he and his wife have run a baseball camp in Enumclaw, plus Zender has also coached youth club baseball in Enumclaw, which he did during an 11-year stint away from education. In that time he worked in sales for a baseball supply company which was what helped him land the job as a marketing teacher — previously he had taught physical education. Zender explained that the Conks have four players who have signed with Division I schools including his No. 1 and 2 pitchers in the rotation: Taylor Jones who has committed to Gonzaga University and Skyler Genger, who will play for Zender’s alma mater, Seattle University. This group has lofty goals chief among them to win another state championship. “The expectations are very high,” Zender said. “But, reasonable because with baseball you never know. If they play their best … they know they’ve got as good a shot as anybody. We know we’re one of 15 or 20

ner Lucas, Pernell and Archibald who played on Kentlake’s football team which won the SPSL North and went to the state playoffs – also means that maturity could come into play. “Along with that and our experience because we’re seniors, we know how to calm down,” Archibald said. “It’s a long season. Work hard but

don’t rush yourself.” While Kentlake may have plenty of pitching, the players also have the will to win, the experience and the talent, the way Pernell looks at it. “We’re coming to play no matter what, and you better be ready to play or else you’re going to lose by a lot,” he said.

Kent driving range reopens T-Birds get top pick in draft REPORTER STAFF

The city of Kent’s Riverbend Driving Range has reopened for full use after closing for nearly two months when the January ice storm damaged the net surrounding the range. The driving range’s 100 plus feet of netting, which protect users of the Green River Trail and residents of the Colony Park Apartments from errant balls, was damaged during January’s ice storm. Riverbend’s driving range couldn’t reopen for full use until new netting was installed. The range reopened March 19. Repairs to the range fences cost the city $100,000, but were cov-

ered by insurance with a portion of the cost to be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, according to a city of Kent media release. Pete Petersen, Riverbend’s superintendent of golf operations, said the range is one of the busiest in the state. “Each year, we average over six million balls hit at the driving range,” Petersen said. “I know our customers are thrilled that we have reopened for full use.” The driving range is at 2020 West Meeker St., and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The range features 32 covered and lighted hitting stalls, eight target greens with bunkers and

water hazards, heated stalls, learning center, pro shop and miniature golf. Fees are $9 for a large 100-ball bucket and $5.50 for a small 50-ball bucket; the senior (ages 55 and older) and military discount rate is $8 for a large and $5 for a small bucket; and the junior (ages 17 and younger) discount is $7 for a large bucket and $4 for a small. Riverbend Golf Complex includes a 6,701yard 18-hole course and a 1,174 yard Par 3 course. The course rating is 72.0 and it has a slope rating of 125. The 18-hole golf course was designed by John Steidel. It opened in 1989. The front 9 was remodeled in 2008 as part of the Green River Levee Improvement Project.

The Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team missed the Western Hockey League playoffs for the third straight season. But the Kent-based team will select first in the league’s Bantam Draft on May 3. Seattle’s lucky ball came out first in the Bantam Draft lottery March 21 at the WHL office in Calgary, Alberta to determine the first six selections. The lottery involved the six non-playoff teams (Prince Albert, Prince George, Seattle, Lethbridge, Swift Current and Red Deer) from the 2011-12 season. Seattle finished ninth in the Western Conference. “It is exciting for our team to win the lottery

Pickard joins Avalanche affiliate Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Calvin Pickard has joined the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League for the remainder of their season. The Monsters are AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. Pickard was originally selected by the Avalanche in the second and have a chance to add a potential superstar to our team,” said T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell in a media release. “When you look back over the last few years at former number one picks like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Quinton Howden, Jared Cowen and

round, 49th overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft. Pickard played in 64 games this season and had a 27-35-1-1 record with five shutouts. Pickard established two WHL records this season. Pickard has appeared in 241 games with the T-Birds in his four-year career and has a 91-12012-15 record with 12 shutouts. Colton Teubert all developing into NHL first round picks and with Derrick Pouliott being rated to go in the first round this year, it is great. “We have three picks in the top 25 this year so draft day is going to be a very exciting day.”
