A project initiated by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians would make life more enjoyable for Enumclaw golfers, improve spawning grounds for migrating salmon and cost roughly $1 million to complete. Members of the Enumclaw City Council voted their support for the proposal during their most recent meeting, perhaps an easy step to take since the city would be on the hook for none of the money. A project has been in the talking stage for several years involving the tribe, the city and the Salmon Recovery Funding Board – each with a vested interest in the outcome. The tribe wants to redirect Boise Creek where it enters the golf course to improve conditions for salmon heading upstream; the city sees the project as a way to eliminate seasonal flooding that irritates golfers and makes parts of the municipal course unplayable; and the SRFB is highly interested because it provides money only to the most deserving entities. Boise Creek now enters the golf course between the greens on holes No. 1 and 10, but the tribe hopes to redirect the channel so it enters along the side of hole No. 11. The proposed location is “an old, former channel,” according to Enumclaw Public Works Director Chris Searcy, who adds that the historic nature of the creek was likely altered by

LIBRARY FROM A1 12 meeting stating the city’s property tax levy rate would not be reduced if the library annexation vote is approved in April. Resolution 1449 passed 6-0. Councilman Darrel Dickson was not present. The resolution stated “the City Council does not intend to reduce the City’s property tax levy rate” should the annexation measure be approved by voters. Councilman Sean Krebs requested an amendment cutting the statement that said the city could no longer provide sufficient funds for the municipal library. Krebs said it is the choice of the City Council to not fund the library, while supporting other city services including parks and police. The motion for the amendment passed unanimously. Charlie Sansone, a former member of the library advisory board and retired social studies teacher from New York, opposes the annexation. One of Sansone’s principal concerns is a belief the children’s section of the Enumclaw library will be reduced. “To me that is a real loss,” Sansone said. “It can’t be measured in dollars and cents.” Sansone said the city began cutting funds to the library in 2009, which he believes is one of the reasons it is more difficult for the Enumclaw library to compete with KCLS. “I said what you have done to us is like those who complain about welfare,” Sansone said. “Cut their welfare and then hold the parents responsible for malnourishment of their children. I don’t see any human factor in that.”

On the side of allowing annexation is former City Council member and current library board member Rich Elfers. “The reality is the City Council knows the city budget is drying up,” Elfers said. “The harsh reality is the city can no longer fund the library. I know at least three council members (who have) said they will vote to close the library.” Elfers said in the current economy the council has to ask “what are the core services, the police are for example. You have to decide where to spend money.” The library board sent a letter to the City Council July 13, 2011 stating members supported local control of the library with additional hours of operation including staying open six days a week. The library is currently open 36 hours a week and is closed on Friday and Sunday. To fund the library the board requested a city levy of 40 cents per $1,000 of property value, which would produce $421,000, plus $260,000 from the city budget. According to the FAQ the KCLS will levy 50 cents per $1,000 for operation of the library. Sansone said he does not believe the city considered the board proposals or listened to the ideas and questions from the 2011 board. He recently resigned from the board. “The City Council did not visit (King County) libraries,” Sansone said. “How many times have they went into KCLS libraries? Look at the Black Diamond (library) adult section compared to our library.” Elfers, who was on the City Council in 2011, said the council did consider the letter from the board in 2011, but decided it was not a plausible plan. “We just said no,” Elfers said.

According to Elfers, the proposal from the 2011 board would cost more than the KCLS annexation. With the 40 cent levy and the $260,000 from the city budget, Elfers estimated it would equal about a 65 cent levy verses 50 cents per $1,000 for KCLS. “The reason the City Council rejected it, is KCLS is a better deal,” Elfers said. “Our goal is to serve the people of Enumclaw. We can’t compete with KCLS. We will get more money out of our tax dollars.” According to the city’s FAQ, if the proposition fails the reciprocal borrowing agreement will end and Enumclaw residents will not be able to obtain a KCLS library card. Sansone said he initially supported the annexation, but changed his mind after visiting King County libraries around the region. “We might not be classed as a top library,” Sansone said. “I think that is bad.” Sansone said he is concerned about what books and collections may be removed from Enumclaw. “I favored holding up and making a thorough study,” Sansone

are putting their energy into staging a public fireworks display to begin at dusk at the Enumclaw Expo Center. The event has been a hit the past few years, attracting large crowds to the center’s north parking lot and informal viewing spots throughout the area. Fireworks are being planned again this year, but lighting up the sky carries a $6,800 price tag – and that’s a bill the Stars and Stripes folks simply aren’t able to pay. At least, not yet. There’s a concerted effort afoot to raise $8,000 to make the 2012 holiday a success. The bulk would cover the cost of the pro-

Heading up the Stars and Stripes Committee is Enumclaw Mayor Liz Reynolds. “It has to be an effort by the community to keep the whole thing alive,” Reynolds said. The committee has shopped around, she said, and has learned $6,800 is a good deal for the type of show Enumclaw is accustomed to. development of the region. Work on the creek would extend approximately 2,000 feet and would involve widening the stream bed. The creek has been artificially narrowed in some areas, contained by berms. That creates an unnatural situation for salmon and contributes to poor fairway drainage, Searcy said. In some areas the creek occasionally sits higher than the adjacent fairway, held in check by man-made berms, he said. On occasion, there has been so much water in Boise Creek it has spilled over the berms and onto the course. This situation has occurred numerous times on holes 10, 16, 17 and 18. “Flooded fairways aren’t good for golfers or fish,” Searcy said. In past decades, the ongoing trouble might have been solved by dredging the creek, Searcy noted, but today’s environmental regulations would make that option tricky

With that in mind, boosters are looking to those communities for help with funding. “We’re trying to expand our horizons,” Reynolds said. “It truly is a Plateau show.” To encourage potential donors, the organizing committee is offering various levels of support. A “Red, White and Blue” package is for those donating $100 to $499; the “Freedom” package, $500 to $999; a “Liberty Bell” package, $1,000 to $1,499; and the “Patriotic” package, $1,500

to $2,000. Anyone wishing to donate can make a check payable to Stars and Stripes and deliver it to either the Chamber of Commerce office or Park Center Hotel where General Manager Tim Robeck is heading Fourth of July marketing efforts. Donations are tax-deductible. Reynolds said the holiday parade will resemble those of previous years, with children on brightly-decorated bicycles, tricycles and scooters leading the way. This year, kids will have to decorate their own rides before arriving downtown; previously, decorations were provided. As always, the noon parade will roll along Cole Street.

at best. A second part of the tribe’s plan is to open up a hidden waterway that now flows under the feet of golfers playing holes 1, 8, 10 and 18. A small stream trickles to a spot between holes No. 2 and No. 7, feeding a pond used as part of the irrigation system for the course’s front nine. That small stream is channeled by an underground culvert. Plans call for it to be opened to the surface, creating another water feature for the public course. If the Puyallup Tribe secures the needed funding, Searcy said, the majority of the work on the course could be done between February and May, when the course gets the least play. A minimal amount of work, he added, would have to be done during the busy months of July and August. Given the city’s financial condition, the tribe’s salmon enhancement plan offers the best option for getting the golf course’s drainage issues resolved, Searcy said. During discussions with members of the Mens Club, Ladies Club and Enumclaw High golf program, poor drainage has been identified as the No. 1 problem plaguing the course.

Mental illness doesn’t affect everyone, but it affects more people than any one person might realize. The National Alliance on Mental Illness estimated 219,000 adults in Washington state suffer from a serious mental illness, as well as 71,000 children. It’s a serious issue; some might say it’s no laughing matter. But Sara Benincasa would disagree. “Probably the most common criticism I receive is from people who don’t think I should be using humor to talk about this serious issue,” Benincasa said. Benincasa is a stand-up comedian and writer for publications Daniel Nash like Wonkette, Staff Writer xojane.com, the Daily Show Indecision blog and Jezebel. She recently published “Agorafabulous!: Dispatches From My Bedroom,” a memoir about a decade of her struggles with agoraphobia and anxiety. The book spans the time periods from her first serious panic attack as a teenager to a mental breakdown in college that rendered her unable to leave her apartment and bed, to the subsequent years of recovery, speed bumps and personal growth. “I subscribe to the notion that if you can laugh at the (worst) moments in your life, you can transcend them,” she writes in the book’s foreword. “And if other people can laugh at your awful (moments) as well, then I guess you can officially call yourself a comedian.” “Agorafabulous” is Benincasa’s literary debut, but it carries a confidence and clarity of voice one might expect from an oft-published author. It’s sad, insightful and funny all at once, and yet the combination never feels contradictory. My personal favorite chapter of the book dealt with Benincasa’s brief employment as a personal assistant to the loose cannon owner of a new age retreat in rural Pennsylvania. The story takes place relatively early in

Having read “Wally’s World” regarding the Mayan calendar (March 21) and the apocalypse that it is supposed to foretell, I found his alternate explanation for termination in this year due to work rage in an astronomer an interesting possibility. However, there is another possibility that I consider more likely. Since most of these types of programs have always been supported by governments or rulers, I suspect it was so in the Mayan culture, possibly tucked in under the umbrella of a larger department, such as Weights and Measurements or just the king’s library. Maybe what happened was they had financial ups and downs like other civilizations and found themselves with a prolonged recession, property values dropped, the budget couldn’t be balanced and departments had to be downsized. Chiseling a rock to predict the future 2000 years just wouldn’t seem to be high on the “must keep” list. So that gives us at least 2:1 odds that we will be here next year. Good enough for some people to take to Vegas and bet a bundle. What have you got to lose? There won’t be anyone to collect if you’re wrong. Bill Hougham Enumclaw

from the Enumclaw Library Advisory Board effective immediately. When first appointed, I looked forward to working with both library and city staff to help ensure the (Enumclaw) library maintained its high standards as a core service to the community. Now at age 93, I am one year younger than the library and both the library and I have seen much over these years, but in all candor, I never expected such a sad turn of events with the policies of your administration and City Council. A key platform of your election campaign was to ensure a full and open democratic government. Your promise and the excellence of our library and staff gave me great confidence in keeping our library strong and able to maintain its specialized services to our unique community. Instead, our library advisory board and library director were purposefully excluded from all discussions with King County Library System (KCLS) personnel. Even after library board chairman Mr. Fred Fleischmann hand-delivered a letter to you Dec. 20, 2010, with a list of board questions and concerns on KCLS annexation (a list specifically requested by Mr. Thomas), neither you nor he ever responded back to the board. Your appointed library advisory board was never allowed to participate in any discussions on alternative funding options, never asked for our opinion, and when we did make comment, were told we should not disagree with city policy. You and the council have refused to honor the mandate in Section 3 of Resolution 1396 that alternative options other than annexation to KCLS would be investigated. In a documented meeting with my son-in-law April 4, 2011, both you and Mr. Thomas said city staff would help

the library director create a 10-year budget and set up a committee to carefully look at alternative funding options. You never followed through. You both also clearly said that same April day no matter what, the library would never be closed – it was too important to current and potential new members of the community. But now we hear from some council members (apparently with your implied silent consent), that the only alternative to KCLS annexation is library closure. Where is the common sense in this, and more importantly, the honor and integrity we expect of our elected representatives? The KCLS levy is a new tax. Do you and council really think your constituents are that blind to believe you are honoring your promise to not raise taxes when you are again outsourcing the parts that makes us a city? Just as you did with the fire department, you are allowing our citizens to be taxed by outside agencies for community resources that were formerly city responsibilities. Why not be honest and tell citizens the entire story; that you may need to raise city taxes in order to keep the parts that make a city “a city.” At least city-levied taxes for the library are guaranteed to stay in Enumclaw fully under our control and would be less than the 50 cents per 1,000 KCLS levy. It appears you are unwilling to speak the truth out of fears of near-term political backlash, but willing to denigrate a 94-year institution of this city and allow an outside agency to tax your citizens. Your administration’s exclusion of the library board and director from discussions on KCLS annexation is not what I ever expected, and you as mayor are ultimately responsible and

St. Barbara’s Catholic Church, pictured here in 1911, still stands in Black Diamond. It originally was home primarily to miners and their families but now serves a growing community of suburbanites. Saint Barbara is the patron saint of miners. In the early years, there was only one church allowed in Black Diamond, a Congregational church which other denominations took turns using. Catholics would walk several miles to the Green River Gorge where the Franklin Catholic Church stood. The bell from the Franklin church was salvaged and later installed in the St. Barbara belfry. In 1910, with donated funds and volunteer labor, construction of this church was commenced and completed for less than $3,000. Such exclusion and dismissal of your board by Mr. Thomas is clearly evident in how he, as de facto library director, scheduled library board meetings to meet his requirements, and then on March 13, 2012, showing no professional courtesy, failed to let anyone know he was not going to make the meeting. (This was due to more than a busy day when he simply forgot.) I no longer care to expend my efforts within the city’s corrupt atmosphere of closed-door politics. I was not then, and will not in the future, be intimidated from getting the true word out. As a young man, I fought for freedom in World War II and now I will exercise my freedom as a citizen of these United States of America. I will not be constrained by shortsighted petty politics and undemocratic behavior that are now leading to such a sad state of affairs in Enumclaw’s city government. Although our Friends group does not control the Black Diamond branch, we certainly influenced the KCLS board with regard to the new library building and staffing pattern in the Black Diamond branch. Our local Friends group does decide how the money we raise with book and plant sales is used to enrich the library’s education programs for young people. Living near Black Diamond our children attended Enumclaw’s schools. People in Enumclaw seemed proud of their schools and always supported the special school levies. The city appeared to be a nice, quiet community that took pride in itself. So a year ago when we decided to downsize, we happily chose to move

our home to Enumclaw. Of course, we still use the Black Diamond branch of the King County Library. Now I learn that the Enumclaw City Council has unanimously chosen to end having the city provide library services to the people in Enumclaw. This not only means the children and adults that have used the Enumclaw library will be without library services but that the King County Library System will no longer allow Enumclaw citizens like myself to continue to slip over to Black Diamond to use the King County Library System. If you believe as I do in libraries and education and informed citizens, the only real solution for us is to vote to join the King County Library System and gain access (right from your home computer) to the largest library system in the United States. one to be able to read it whether or not they suffered from agoraphobia or panic attacks, and feel a sense of kinship, a sense of comfort in whatever type of loneliness they’re experiencing, whether or not it’s of the clinical sort. DN: You had, from what you’ve described, a great support system in your family. And you’ve said on your podcast, “Sex and Other Human Activities,” that your father works in pharmaceuticals. Your family has some familiarity with mental illness and the proper medications. Do you think you had an advantage in recovery in that regard? SB: Um, sometimes. That, I think, comes from being in therapy. To an extent, knowing about the way certain conditions tend to present—for example, schizophrenia and bipolar tend to present themselves in the late teens and early twenties—but if somebody starts to talk about certain symptoms I recognize from certain disease states I heard about growing up with a family in pharmaceuticals… It’s not like I’m going to diagnose somebody, but I know enough that I can say, “If you’re seeing things that aren’t there, if you’re hearing things that aren’t there, then this might be something to talk to a therapist about.” But I suppose anybody would say that. But I think the biggest thing that I got out of it was money. I come from a family that works in an industry that makes a load of money. Not that my family makes a load of money, but the industry makes a load of money—Big Pharma is big for a reason. It is sometimes corrupt, it is sometimes wonderful. It saves lives, and in our country, due to a number of factors,

Benincasa took some time from her busy schedule to sit down and chat about her book. DN: Chapter 3 deals with you going to Emerson College, and then by your junior year you were full-on agoraphobic and couldn’t leave your apartment. SB: Yeah. Chapter 3 is called ‘Bowls of Pee,’ because in Chapter 3 you get to read about a very unsavory time in my life, when I had really painted myself into a corner. I was so frightened I didn’t leave my apartment, but more than that I was too scared and often too depressed to leave my bed. And I had to pee somewhere, so… You know, it was a heavy time, it was a scary time, and it was something I didn’t really talk about until a few years ago just because it had never occurred to me to talk about it. DN: Well, I think, even though it seems extreme in retrospect, I think even though your story isn’t something everyone can relate to, it’s something more people can relate to than any one person might suspect. SB: I hope so. My aim for writing the book was for some-

One of the most important discussions parents can have with their children is a discussion about alcohol. Parents are often wary of such a discussion, fearing if they come on too strongly when discussing the dangers of alcohol that their children might be too curious about alcohol to avoid it. As difficult a discussion as it can be, parents must have an open dialogue with their kids about alcohol and the sooner the better. The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization devoted to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, notes that 39 percent of eighth graders, 58 percent of tenth graders, and 72 percent of twelfth graders have reported trying alcohol at least once. To parents, such figures only highlight the importance of talking to kids about the dangers of alcohol, and why it’s best to avoid alcohol until it’s legal to drink it. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism offers the following tips to parents who are ready to discuss alcohol with their child. • Make it a conversation. Adults don’t like to be lectured to and neither do kids, especially teenagers. When discussing alcohol with a child, parents should make it a conversation and avoid lecturing.

Enumclaw Day 2012 More than 65 Enumclaw-area residents, former residents and a few tagalong friends celebrated Enumclaw Day in Yuma, Ariz., Feb. 29. According to reports, the weather was beautiful, the food was good and the company unbeatable. Hosted annually by Earl and June Maxwell, this was the ninth such gathering. Notable this year was the 50th wedding anniversary celebration for two Enumclaw couples, Sandy and Larry Booth (pictured, at left), and Nancy and Ron Adams. The couple share the same wedding date, Feb. 24, 1962.

Enumclaw High traveled to Bonney Lake’s diamond March 28 and obliterated a long-standing slump that existed against the Panthers, winning 8-2. Enumclaw improved to 3-0 in SPSL 3A play and currently shares the league lead with the Peninsula Seahawks. EHS coach Michael Eckhart said his team wins with talent, speed on the base paths, defensive teamwork and offensive consistency, all of which came shining

White River High’s Marcus Dickson continues to post eye-popping numbers. The latest effort for the Hornet track standout came Saturday at the KentMeridian Invitational, where Dickson cranked out an 800-meter time of 1 minute, 50.89 seconds. Not only did the Brigham Young University-bound runner shatter his own school record, but the time now stands as the best in the nation this season. According to statistics compiled by the website athletic.net, Dickson also has the state’s second-best time in the 1,600 meters, 4:14.70; third-best time in the 400 meters, 49.97; and third-best time in the 3,200 meters, 9:23.20.

Sarah Morrow went 2-for-4 at the dish and stole a tandem of bases, as did Jennifer Simpson. Enumclaw was slated to lock horns with the Auburn Mountainview Lions Friday, but that game was postponed due to rain and will be made up after spring break.

The White River High track and field crew might not have finished among the leaders during Saturday’s Kent-Meridian Invitational, but a handful of Hornets certainly made their presence known. “We had a lot of kids to pretty well,” coach Jerry Scheidt said. As a team, the White River boys placed 11th and the girls were 13th. Leading the way was Marcus Dickson, who ran a national-best 800 meter time of 1 minute, 50.89 seconds (see accompanying story). Also faring well for the Hornet boys were Devin Liebel, who finished third in the 300-meter hurdles, and the fifthplace 4x100 relay crew of Josh Miller, Nick Wells, Xavier Russell and Liebel. Scheidt also pointed out strong performances by Russell in the 100 meters and Wells in the long jump. Among the White River girls, Kelly Coyle cleared 9 feet, 6 inches to place third in the pole vault, Jade Crawford went 4-10 to finish third in the high jump and Micaela Kilcup was sixth in the shot put. Sprinter Cassidy France set a personal record in the 200 meters.

Hornet athletes are enjoying spring break this week and will return to action April 12 when they host Franklin Pierce and Eatonville in South Puget Sound League 2A action.

The sophomore right-hander threw well showing good velocity, although he struggled at times with the strike zone. The Lions were sitting on balls and picking the pitches to swing. Peterson is a very strong sophomore who will be an anchor on the mound for the Hornets as this season progresses and in coming years. Shayne Sanborn, another sophomore, took the mound in relief in the fourth frame and threw well, according to coach Eric Fiedler.

ARNOLD THOMASSON Arnold Paul Thomasson died March 27, 2012. He was born March 17, 1923, in Gardar, N.D., to Arni and Emma (Kruse) Thomasson. Due to his father’s death and mother’s illness, he and his brother were sent to an orphanage and, later, to the Jeff Home in Auburn, Wash. His high school principal eventually arranged for him to live and work at Smith Family Dairy. When World War II began, he and a friend enlisted in the Army. A majority of his time was spent in the South Pacific. He was a forward observer and earned the Arnold Thommason rank of sergeant. While on leave, he met his future bride, Darlene Minnie Klinkel. They were wed Jan. 31, 1947, and made their home in Enumclaw, next to her family home. Following the war, he took a job at Valley Supply Co-op delivering oil to heat homes. Later he and his wife founded

Enumclaw resident Norbert Edward Schmidt, 84, died March 30, 2012. He was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Tripp, S.D., to Bertha and Otto Schmidt. He graduated from Yankton College where he lettered in track and basketball. He was recruited to travel with the Harlem Globetrotters on the opposing team called the “House of David.” He taught and coached high school in Menno, S.D., then studied in a graduate program at the University of South Dakota and the University of Missouri. He completed master’s degrees in math and physics. He was recruited by North American Aviation and spent the majority of his career in the aerospace industry. He married Jean Liptak in 1979 and inherited a 9-year old daughter, Lori. They lived in Los Angeles, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and then back to Los Angeles. After retiring from Rockwell International, he became vice president of an engineering company providing services to military installments. After again retiring and settling in Enumclaw in 1992 he took on a position as

She earned a Lisa Jensen bachelor of arts in psychology from Central Washington University, graduating with honors. She lived in the Ellensburg area for the last 13 years and was nearing the completion of her master’s degree from Montana State University. She will be remembered as an advocate for all, especially the disabled. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, painting and traveling. She is survived by husband Jay Jensen; son Pearce Elliott; stepdaughter Olivia Jensen; sister of Claudia Elliott; and parents Ralph and Melody Elliott. A memorial is planned for 1 p.m. April 13 at First Lutheran Church in Ellensburg. Donations can be
