The annual Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race comes to town this weekend, covering city streets and country roads. Saturday, downtown traffic will be detoured away from parts of Griffin, Washington and Battersby avenues, plus Railroad, First and Cole streets as cyclists tackle the criterium. This is the best event for viewers, as high-speed riders take sharp corners on the figure-eight course.

Local SeaGal to enjoy encore performance By Daniel Nash Staff Writer

Three years ago, Stephanie Stennes went into auditions for the Seattle Seahawks SeaGals not knowing what to expect. No one knows what to expect going in. More than 200 women, many already with years of experience as high school cheerleaders, congregate at CenturyLink Field each year to try for the pros. Stennes, of Buckley, made it that first year, and she’s earned the spot again three seasons since. “It’s hard to say, but I would say most of the

girls stay three, four seasons with the team,” Stennes said. “It’s such a unique experience, most girls who make the team won’t want to leave after just a year.” Stennes soon learned that the competition of high school cheer is replaced entirely by support for the football team through showmanship and community outreach. “You have to attend promotions, speak, sing, and there are even responsibilities with how you carry yourself,” she said. “A lot more is expected of you. You have to be more intelligent, have more personality, and more poise.” Stennes was invited to join the SeaGals’ show group in her third season, and she will return to show group this season. Show group can be thought of as the elite upper echelon of an NFL cheer team. The girls from show group are the ones sent out on tour stops outside of the state and outside the country, often to boost the morale of American soldiers stationed abroad. Stennes

Boots and Badges basketball charity By Brian Beckley Staff Writer

The third annual Boots and Badges charity basketball game pitting firefighters against police officers in a battle for hardwood supremacy tips off Saturday at Enumclaw High School. Organized once again by for-

mer Sgt. Brian Lynch of the Black Diamond Police Department, a former Enumclaw officer, the game will feature members of the Enumclaw, Bonney Lake, Auburn and Kent police departments taking on a team from Enumclaw Fire/District 28. All money will be donated to the American Cancer Society. In the past two years, the game has raised almost $15,000 in support of cancer-fighting research, according to Lynch. This year’s game will also feature a halftime show by Heavy Hammer,

Community News and Notes • Enumclaw Rotary is an organization whose club membership represents a cross-section of Enumclaw’s business and professional men and women, along with community volunteers. We actually now have an Enumclaw Rotary classification of “Community Volunteer” to account for people who are not in business professions. Our club meets weekly for lunch at the Hope Lutheran Church and is nonpolitical, nonreligious and open to all cultures, races and creeds. Valuing the next generation and supporting their educational efforts is an area we spotlight consistently throughout the year. This includes recognizing a student of the month from all three high schools in the area (Enumclaw, White River, and Collins), to supporting graduating seniors with scholarships, to founding and continuing to support the Enumclaw-Black Diamond tutoring work which operates out of the Enumclaw Youth Center. Encouraging our community’s students to excel in their education and make a difference in their lives is important to us as a club. International projects are a big thing with our club. One of our more creative fundraisers has made its way around the area over the last few months. Perhaps you’ve been given a gift of a herd of Holstein cows on your front lawn, or seen someone else who has. It’s been a fun way to support our international project providing water, sanitation and education for orphans in Zambia.

SEAGAL FROM 1 has been told to anticipate stops in Kosovo, Djibouti and Paris, among other destinations, in the coming year. It’s through show group that Stennes took on a new personal challenge: singing. “I’m a person who likes to challenge myself,” she said. “I told my coach it was something I wanted to do, I worked on it, and I recently performed vocally for the first time. It’s the only time I had ever been nervous before performing in front of people.” A cheerleader’s calendar is a full calendar. Everyone attends practices twice a week at a time arranged to accommodate most work schedules; that doesn’t include show group practice. On game day, cheerleaders must be on hand five hours beforehand to prep, practice and promote the match-up. Additionally, SeaGals are obligated to represent the team at five to six scheduled promotional events a month, be it golf tournament, charity auction or poster signing. Cheerleaders tend to work out whenever they can fit it in, and try to make the hard work stick by eating a healthy diet, Stennes said. Stennes instructs Zumba and Pilates classes, and picks up hours at a restaurant. Some of the girls have even more

a bagpipe and drum corps containing members of the Buckley Fire Department. The night will also include raffles, including a five-night stay at a condo in Ocean Shores, Wash., or the chance to win Mariners tickets. Tickets to the event are $5. Doors open at 6 p.m. with game time scheduled for 7 p.m. To comment on this story view it online at www.courierherald.com. And last but not least, our newest community activity is our Rotary Miniature Golf Course housed at the Enumclaw Expo Center’s Rabbit Barn. In fact, our next event is coming up on 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 19. Families are invited for a rousing time of open play. Bring the whole family and enjoy some wholesome fun! To learn more about Rotary or to inquire about becoming a member, feel free to give me (Athena Dean) a call at 425.241.0265 or shoot me an email at athenadean@gmail.com. We’d love to have you join us for lunch some Thursday in the near future. • The 74th annual Enumclaw Junior Dairy Show, a one-day event, begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Enumclaw Expo Center. More than 100 head of livestock will be shown by approximately 80 4-H and FFA exhibitors from throughout the area. The public is welcome to attend. • I want to thank everyone that attended my 80th birthday party. I had a wonderful time and I hope everyone else did, too. Special thanks to my children who planned the event. Again, thanks. Maybe we can do it again when I reach 90. Barb Bellack

demanding schedules, replete with kids and a full-time job. Add that to the fact that a SeaGals spot is never guaranteed from year-to-year, and it becomes clear that pro cheerleading is a demanding lifestyle. “But it’s such a rare opportunity,” Stennes said. “There’s all this adrenaline out on the field, you get to meet wonderful girls, experience traveling the world, performing for thousands of people. It’s the most amazing feeling. There’s nothing like it.” But will she attempt it again for a fifth season and beyond? “It’s hard to make that decision at the beginning of the year,” she said. “It’s hard to walk away from it once you’ve been on the team one season. But you never know what a year will have in store for you, so it’s better not to have expectations too early.”

Some find community living a perfect fit A recent AARP poll found that nearly 60 percent of Baby Boomers say they are concerned about living independently, and

more than 50 percent say they have begun to think about how they would pay for independent living assistance as they get

older. Crunching the Numbers Mereen Klein, 86, started looking at the costs of keeping her own apart-

ment versus independent living when her eyesight declined. She decided to move to an independent retirement living community that met her needs. “It was right for me with my fixed income, and the money covers everything,” said Klein. For Klein, it not only made financial sense, it also gave her back some of her freedom. “I can take the community bus down to the bank or out to dinner. I can even go to the doctor and my appointments without bugging anyone for a ride,” said Klein. “I have

more independence now than when I lived alone.” Ask the Right Questions To calculate the true costs of making the move to an independent retirement community, seniors should ask as many questions as possible prior to moving in, to uncover any buy-in fees, to determine if a long-term lease is required and to see if the “feel” of the community is right. Seventy three-year-old Julianne (Judy) Kayatt knows this all too well. She sold her home and moved into a community that didn’t offer much for her

money and wasn’t as caring as she’d hoped. After only a few months, she started her search again and found a perfect fit. “My family likes that I am happy here, and I like that I can still be independent and live here,” said Kayatt. “I am free to go where I want; I am enjoying activities and events and I’m surrounded by friends. I know I can be happy here for a long time.” The Golden Years Making the move to an independent living community can be an affordable way to make the most of one’s retirement years. Kayatt and Klein have all seen the benefits to cutting ties to a house or an apartment in favor of community living.

Just looking for a bit of consistency

Albert Einstein once said nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. I would have to disagree. There is something more destructive: Passing laws that either nobody understands or nobody wants to enforce. This is exactly the situation nearby cities like Bonney Lake, Sumner and Maple Valley currently face with the issue of medical marijuana. Green Society Group, which opened April 20 in Maple Valley, has apparently unintentionally thrown back the curtain on our legal system to reveal just how convoluted it TJ Martinell is now. Guest columnist In July 2011 that cities council passed a moratorium on medical marijuana collective gardens and dispensaries. This was done in response to a state law legalizing the possession and growing of medical marijuana, large sections of which were vetoed by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Many of those sections contained clauses pertaining to the regulation of collective gardens and dispensaries. Because parts of the bill were left out the result is a legal nightmare particularly for city governments. Nobody knows what it means or how the law is to be enforced. This has left the cities with the responsibility of handling it in terms of land use and zoning. Yet, at the same time all of what the state legalized is still illegal under federal law, but the federal government has not taken any action to resolve the discrepancy. In the meantime, cities are stuck at ground zero. Under federal law, the growing, selling, purchasing or possession of medical marijuana is considered a felony. Under state law, however, it’s perfectly legal.

What gets Enumclaw riled? Reflections from four years on the council In 2009, the Nestlé company wanted to come to our town and establish a water bottling plant. Their proposal involved taking over “first rights” of Enumclaw’s water supply. Revelation of secret negotiations between Nestlé and the administration brought outrage from councilwoman Liz Reynolds and the public. Many feared the multinational company would steal Enumclaw’s pristine water and control the city. Additionally, there was concern over the terrible reputation that Nestlé had earned for the sale of contaminated baby formula in Third World countries, Eventually, the administration and the council backed down and voted “no” to Nestlé coming to town. Thus began my education into the politics of emotion in Enumclaw. The second major blow-up occurred a year after the Nestlé debacle. The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission served an $11 million penalty on the city for lack of proper maintenance of its gas utility. The city

administration at that time had ignored a certified letter of warning from the WUTC over this issue. The public was not only enraged, Rich Elfers but also fearful of the Columnist level of safety of our gas pipelines. Eventually, at the cost of at least $100,000, the city complied and fixed the problem to the WUTC’s satisfaction. The penalty was averted. The third incident that raised the city’s ire was the whopping 55 percent sewer rate increase to pay for cost overruns on the brand new $32 million sewer treatment plant in September of 2009 just before mayoral and council elections. 100 Years on the Plateau! Pictured is the outcrop of the Gem coal bed, at the New Franklin Mine north of Enumclaw. This photo shows a typical water level entrance to a coal mine along the banks of the Green River. The mine’s portal followed the pitching coal seam into the hillside but proceeded with a slight incline to provide drainage, thus called a water level mine. Because the mine rails have been torn up and the coal car appears in a state of disrepair, this was an abandoned mine opening at the time of this 1910 photo. While there are very few abandoned coal mine openings remaining in this area, no one should ever enter into an old mine due to the extreme dangers within. Enumclaw chamber is looking for volunteers roused residents’ ire. Two football games had been played on the old football field during heavy rains and destroyed much of the natural turf. This was highlighted by a picture of the field sent to The Seattle Times, causing the high school to play on the Orting High School field for its last two games. A large number of irate football fans including the head football coach filled the council chamber to demand a new artificial field, although it was the school district that was in charge of field maintenance, not the city. Even though the city took a lot of public criticism for not caring about the kids, it held steady and demanded that the $500,000 turf replacement in 10 years would not be dumped upon city taxpayers. In the end, grants, matching funds,

and donations covered the cost of the new turf while the school district’s constituents, a much larger and broader based group, will cover the future cost of replacement. The most recent major emotional issue was annexation of the library to the King County Library System. This issue ended only a short time ago when voters approved the annexation by 50.71 percent – just 34 votes. What did I learn from these issues that stirred the emotions of residents? • To lead a city requires that the council and the administration must do what is best for the city, even if it’s not popular. The council needs to have a list of priorities that help them choose what is really important instead of what some pressure group is proposing. Those decisions must be made after all the facts are gathered both pro and con, comparing costs

Wherever the job is located, Gary moves his portable barbecue drums to the site, brings an ample supply of ribs, hamburgers, chicken, salmon or other meats, and stokes up a fire using apple, wild cherry or alder wood depending, of course, on the flavor the customer desires. There are also traditional side dishes. He hires a staff that serves everything. Gary is a good-looking, 71-year-old, quick-witted fellow with a sharp business eye for the bottom line. He was raised in Milwaukee, graduated from high school and immediately signed up for a four-year stretch in the Marines. As Prohibition demonstrated, a law isn’t worth the paper or ink used to write it if it’s not enforced. In King County, the Prosecutor’s Office has told Maple Valley it will dismiss any felony charges brought to them regarding medical marijuana gardens or dispensaries. On a federal level, the Drug Enforcement Agency will also not take any action unless outright, flagrant violations occur. To put it plainly, there’s a federal law that’s not being consistently enforced by the DEA, a fractured state law and a city moratorium that is either superfluous under federal law or potentially inapplicable depending on one’s interpretation of the state law. If you’re not confused by this point, you’re either a lawyer or you’re not paying close enough attention. And even if you’re a lawyer you should be slightly confused. The issue here isn’t about the legalization of medical marijuana. It’s about the lack of legal clarify and consistency, and the victims are city and law enforcement officials who have had the buck passed

onto them. It’s not fair for them to have to wade through this legal mire and contradiction between state and federal law when they have no power to change it. When those who are supposed to uphold the law don’t even understand a law, something’s wrong, and it’s usually the law itself. The state legislature needs to do what it can to resolve this matter by either repealing the law in its entirety and reintroducing a modified version or adding sections to the existing law that would address these problems. And the governor, whether it’s Gregoire or a new one, must either sign the bill as it is or veto it completely. At the same time, this entire legal fiasco could also be resolved by a single person, DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart. She can continue to keep medical marijuana classified as a Schedule I drug, or consider reclassifying medical marijuana as a Schedule II drug, which would give the states the ability to regulate it properly. To quote a tired, but ever so true saying – you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. You can’t ban a substance and then be wishy-washy about it enforcing the ban.

versus benefits. That requires political courage and a clear set of prioritized goals. • Getting all perspectives out to the public is vitally important to make good decisions. Emotions are important, but reason must prevail. That does not always happen, either at the city or the national level. Good government requires that decisions should not be made from either liberal or conservative ideology, but from the answer to the question, “What’s good for the majority of the public, and what gets the job done?” • Good government requires thoughtful, elected representatives, an informed public and a media that tells the real story behind the issues. Lacking any of these three parts, and the city and its constituents suffer. Emotions can drive a city’s destiny, but clear priorities and reason must prevail.

The rest of his “wayward” life has been quite broad and fascinating. It was in that capacity that he first came to Enumclaw in 1994. Thereafter, he spent several years cooking in the old Enumclaw hospital. BASEBALL The Enumclaw High Hornets’ baseball season ended with a 1-0, pitchers’ duel loss to Hazen in the district tournament Saturday. The season may not have ended the way the Hornets had hoped or planned, but they battled throughout the season with solid play and great promise for the future. Senior righty Kevin Nelson held the Highlanders to one run, but Enumclaw could not quite come up with a hitting formula against Hazen hurler Jimmy Schmidt. Enumclaw lost to Timberline in the second game of the tournament 11-2 May 9. Nelson pitched well during the season and won the first game or the district tournament for the Hornets against Camas 9-5. Other highlights for Enumclaw came with some dazzling play at second from freshman Tyler St. John. Junior Dalton Bidon moved into the varsity catcher position and showed a strong arm and big bat. Pitcher Bryce Peterson, sophomore, picked up some valuable tournament experience on the mound that will pay off in the future.

TENNIS Unbeaten and the best. The Enumclaw Hornet tennis team can boast both after completing a perfect 10-0 season and claiming the South Puget Sound League 3A championship. The girls also won the South Kitsap tournament. Qualifying for the state tournament were Kayla Zillbauer and Camille Clare who will be playing this weekend for seeding after finishing on top in districts. Rachel Norling and Hannah Smith will be playing this weekend to earn a spot to state. The girls played third in district competition.

WATER POLO The Enumclaw High water polo team completed a perfect South Puget Sound League season, winning with a 12-0 record and 20-1 overall. The next step for the girls is the state tournament that begins today, Wednesday, at Rogers High. According to an email from coach Bob Averill, “Enumclaw’s success is remarkable, in part, because they have done it with only nine players on their roster – seniors Annie Birklid and Hannah Kinniburgh, juniors Allie and Katie Larrea and Bella Davenport, sophomore Megan Lesmeister and freshmen Bailey Sexton, Haley Sonneson and Madi Woodall. Water polo has six field players and a goalkeeper playing, so the Hornet squad has only two subs on their best day. Most high school teams have 12-15 players on their roster.” In the Hornets’ final match of the regular season May 10, Enumclaw beat Puyallup 19-7. Scoring for Enumclaw were Katie Larrea, 6 goals; Allie Larrea, 5; Lesmeister, 3; Kinniburgh, 2; Sexton, 2; and Sonneson, 1.

FASTPITCH Enumclaw will be playing in the West Central District fastpitch tournament 4 p.m. Friday at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma. The Hornets will be playing the winner of the Auburn Mountainview-Yelm game. Visit www.courierherald.com, for results.

SOCCER The Enumclaw boys soccer team lost to Kennedy 2-1 in the subdistrict tournament May 9. The loss ended the spring season for the Hornets. Scoring for EHS was Tyler Koenig at the 42-minute mark.

White River

The White River boys claimed a subdistrict track and field championship Saturday while the Hornet girls secured second place. The steller finishes assure a healthy Hornet representation this weekend, when athletes return to Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner for the West Central District meet. There, the top five finishers in each event will qualify for the state Class 2A championships, to be contested May 24-26 at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma. At subdistricts, the Hornet boys were paced by four-time title holder Marcus Dickson, who won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and also ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team. He was joined in that winning effort by Kody Gould, Austin May and Devin Liebel. Also a subdistrict White River High sports

BASEBALL White River High’s offense came alive Saturday as the Hornets easily handled a pair of opponents in potential season-ending contests. With their backs to the wall, the Hornets first defeated Olympic High 10-4, then dismantled the Sequim Wolves 11-3. Both games were played at Foss High in Tacoma. The two victories gave White River one more opportunity to qualify for the state Class 2A tournament. The Hornets took on North Kitsap Monday afternoon for the West Central District’s No. 4 seed; results are posted at www.courierherald.com. If White River wins Monday, the state tourney opener will come at 1 p.m. Saturday in Bellingham against Burlington-Edison. In Saturday’s second game, White River rapped out 12 hits while the Wolves made costly errors that resulted in two big innings for the Hornets. Ryan Bird led the White River attack with three hits and drove in two runs. Cole Johnson, Tanner Williams and

champion for the White River boys was Blake Maresh in the shot put. The Hornet girls were headed by two-time winners Cassidy France and Lauryn Wate. France topped the field in both the 100- and 200-meter sprints and Wate won at 800 and 3,200 meters, while also finishing second at 1,600 meters. Also winning subdistrict titles for the Hornet girls were Kelly Coyle in the pole vault and the foursome of Johnna Coughlin, France, Cassidy Kunst and Jade Crawford, who won both the 4x100 and 4x200 relay races.

Enumclaw

Enumclaw High track and field athletes posted some impressive results during the Class 2A/3A subdistrict meet last weekend. For the Hornet girls, Olivia Bannerot won the long jump reaching 16 feet, Dustin France added two hits each. All Hornet starters reached base at least once. White River pitchers allowed just three Sequim hits. Zach Rohrbach picked up the win, pitching the final four innings. He did not allow a hit and struck out seven. In Saturday’s WCD victory over Olympic, four Hornet pitchers combined to limit the Trojans to five hits. At the plate, Williams collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Bird, Cole Johnson, Garrett Robertson, Zach Rohrbach, Dustin France Zach McMillen all had a hit and Bird also had two RBI. The Hornets suffered only their fourth loss of the season May 9, losing to Kingston 4-0. Hornet ace Johnson was roughed up for four runs in the third inning and the Hornets could not generate any offense.

FASTPITCH The White River High girls begin their West Central District fastpitch experience at 2 p.m. Friday, taking on the Washington Patriots. The game pits the fifth-seeded Hornets against No. 12 Washington.

AnnaMarie Forza won the javelin at 123-7. Hannah Calvert took second in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 20.76 seconds, and Maria Blad ran third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.44. For the boys Matt Wasisco took second in the javelin at 162-8 Next up is this weekend’s West Central District meet. Like subdistricts, it will be staged at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The district meet pares the field for the following week’s state Class 3A competition, to be held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The winner will play a second Friday game, taking the field at 6 p.m. against the No. 4 Sequim Wolves. If the Hornets drop their tourney opener, they will play a loser-out game at noon Saturday. Two wins on Friday would assure White River of a berth in the state tournament. The WCD event is being staged at Sprinker Recreation Center south of Tacoma. The May 25-26 state tournament will be Carlon Park in Selah.

SOCCER The White River High soccer team kicked off postseason play with a pair of narrow victories. The Hornets blanked North Kitsap Saturday by a 1-0 score, having already defeated Evergreen High 2-1 on May 9. Saturday’s win advanced White River to the state Class 2 tournament as the district’s No. 2 seed. As one of 16 teams in the state field, White River begins its single-elimination challenge today, Wednesday, with a battle against Bellingham. If the Hornets win, they will play Saturday against the winner of an openinground tussle between Mark Morris and Archbishop Murphy.

Marshall Johnson Robert Marshall Johnson passed away peacefully May 5, 2012 at Good Samaritan Retirement Home in Moscow, Idaho, due to an age related illness. He was born on December 6th, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska to parents, Marshall P. Johnson and Vyola O. Johnson. Following the accidental death of his father in 1926 the family including his mother and brother, James, moved to Fargo, North Dakota where he attended public schools and North Dakota State University. While attending Junior High School he was introduced to concert band music and availed himself of every opportunity to play his chosen instruments for the rest of his life, and he always claimed that music was his first great love. Marshall, as he was known enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and was trained as a fighter pilot. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to Fargo with his new bride, Elaine, whom he married January 1945, in Richmond, VA. In January 1947 Marshall was among the first group of pilots included in the formation of The North Dakota Air National Guard. He worked as a full time Air Technician in the Operations field and supervised all of the flying operations associated with the Air Guard unit which was later known as “The Happy Hooligans”. In 1951, the Air Guard unit was

re-called to active duty in support of the Korean War and Marsh flew 60 combat missions against the North Koreans and Chinese. In late 1952, he was released from active duty with the United States Air Force and returned to Fargo to assist with the reorganization of the Air Guard unit. By this time he had spent almost 10 years flying U.S. Air Force aircraft and he claimed that the joy of flying had established itself as his second great love. He never missed an opportunity to soar into “the wild blue yonder!” Elaine and Marshall raised a family consisting of two sons and one daughter and was retired from his military status in 1974 with the rank of Colonel. Their older son, Marshall James died in 1986, and after 60 years of marriage, Elaine preceded him in death in 2005. During those 60 years he always claimed that Elaine was his third and greatest love, after music and aviation. Survivors include son Paul L Johnson of Moscow, Idaho, daughter, Barbara E. Douglas (David) of Elgin, TX., grand-son Brent, of Portland, OR, Sara (John) Eisenbarth, of Woodenville, WA, Miel (David) Dotson, of Normandy Park, WA, Coco (Neal) Peterson of Austin, TX., seven great grand children, and a number of nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held at a later date. Marshall and Elaine’s inurnment will be in Manban, North Dakota at the State Veterans Cemetery. Contributions can be made in his name to the North Dakota Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Short’s Funeral Chapel and on-line Condolences can be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.

recently recommended that pregnant mothers get vaccinated with dTap. 4. What advice do you give your patients about decreasing stress or other mental health issues? It rains a lot in Washington and the sun infrequently shines. Washington women can have a high propensity to Vitamin D deficiency which may lead to depression. Vitamin D supplements may be useful. Ask your doctor to have your Vitamin D levels checked. Also, exercise releases natural endorphins which prevents against depressing and improves longevity. 5. What are the most important recommendations you have for having a healthy diet or staying active? Women should consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables; choose whole-grain, high-fiber food; consume fish at least twice a week; limit intake of saturated fat to less than 10 percent of energy and if possible to less than 7 percent, cholesterol to less than 300 mg/day, alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day and sodium intake to less than 2.3 g/day (approximately one teaspoon of salt). Consumption of transfatty acid should be as low as possible. Women should accumulate

a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity – walking on most and preferably all days of the week. Women who need to lose weight or sustain weight loss should accumulate a minimum of 60 to 90 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity. Women should maintain or lose weight through an appropriate balance of physical activity and caloric intake to achieve an ideal BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m and a waist circumference of less than 35 inches 6. As women age, arthritis and other mobility issues may decrease one’s ability to be as active as they should. Maintaining good balance and eliminating falls are considerations as well. History Made at State Music Competition Hard work, determination and lots and lots of practice are the makings of a state champion. Imagine this: 30,000 students in the state of Washington performing in their regional competition hoping to win the region in their category. If they win the region they are then given the prestigious opportunity to compete against the best at the state level in Ellensburg at Central Washington University. This is exactly what 34 EHS musicians did. This past weekend band, choir and orchestra students proudly represented themselves, the school and the great town of Enumclaw with superb performances. ALL the students received SUPERIOR RATINGS and two of those students, Kaelynn Dirks and Alyssa Hudon won 1st place with their violin duet making history as it is the first time any orchestra students from Enumclaw placed at the state competition. This is an even sweeter win for them as they are seniors! Congratulations to all of them!

Students Excel at WCTSMA Competition Seventeen Enumclaw High School Sports Medicine students traveled to Vancouver Washington over the weekend for the Washington Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association Competition. This competition involves each student taking at least 2-3 tests over two days. Students also had the opportunity to meet other instructors and students from 36 other schools in Washington and 3 schools from California. On Thursday, our students visited Linfield and George Fox in Oregon, both of which have Athletic Training programs. The actual competition was on Friday and Saturday. Highlights from the competition include:

We had several class and overall champions including: A. Wolanski, L. Norton, E. Robbles, S. Lanting, N. Nelson, R. Blake and J. Lanting. We also received numerous awards for herdsmanship, outstanding record books, and J. Lanting was the recipeient this year for the Walt Bergman Award - a leadership and showmanship accolade. 13 students in all raised over $14,000 from their projects. Think you might be interested in some of that money? Talk to an FFA member about how to get involved for next year!

Complete Automotive Repair & Maintenance

We’ve ! N W O R G

Mike Pedreira & family

617161

We are Mike and Amy Pedreira, owners of “Mike’s Shop” which is an automotive shop that is located in Buckley on Hwy 410. The shop has now been open for almost 2 years and we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from our family and friends. We have met so many new people and enjoy being able to help them. Since we opened our doors we have hired 2 great mechanics to our family. Along with Mike Pedreira, owner and ASE Advanced Level Technician, we now have Mike Sand who has many ASE certifications and has 20 years of experience he brought to our business. We also now have Kenny Loye who is a graduate from Bates Technical College in diesel mechanics. We are excited that he brings his specialty with diesels to our business. Both are great guys, and have the same morals and values we have and are huge assets to our business. Of course there is Amy Pedreira, owner and Mike Pedreira’s wife. I am in the front answering phones,

doing the billing and customer service. I truly enjoy meeting all the great customers (but sometimes I talk too much). Occasionally you will also see our sons Michael and Ryan at the shop, and last but not least our yellow lab CJ. A lot of you already know him, he is our greeter!!! With the help of our customers, our business has grown a lot in the last two years. Along with the 2 new mechanics, we also have new equipment which has allowed us to expand our capabilities. We are now able to help you with all of your accessories, after market and performance needs. We have the ability to get truck lifts, running boards, winches, Edge products etc. We now offer fleet account options, in which we offer discounts and top priority turn around times. Along with all the new exciting things we can now offer our customers, we also now offer Oil Change Services without an appointment! Our waiting room has a TV, reading

material, and a coffee bar for your convenience. Our mission when we started was to remain honest, trustworthy and to provide a shop where you don’t have any surprise bills. We are living our dream! We are able to help our customers with all of their automotive needs, feel good about helping them and provide a good, affordable service. Our entire staff makes sure with every car that comes through our shop, that we are honest and efficient. Our referrals are over the top! Family and friends have spread the word and it is because of you all that we are able to continue to do what we love. Our customers mean the world to us and we try every day to exceed your expectations. We can not say “Thank You” enough to the support we have from our community. We are pleased to be a part of the Chamber of Commerce, city activities and all the school programs!

Live each day to the fullest Fred Davis Calvary Presbyterian

made a difference. Doctors doubted that if I lived I would ever walk again. And even then, it would be months and years before I would ever be ready to assume the duties of pastor. Miraculously, within four months I was out of the hospital and walking – with braces and crutches, but walking. And on Nov. 1 of that same year, long before doctors expected it possible, we drove into our new home town. And we have loved every moment of these nearly 15 years. But then we started getting cards, flowers and well-wishes from the people of Calvary and so many others in Enumclaw. Several of the churches wrote to say they were praying for us. There was a nondenominational men’s Bible study that met at the old Loading Dock Restaurant. They, too, had us on their prayer list. People we had never met were showing grace, love and concern that was humbling and overwhelming. Enumclaw is a special place. I trust that you all realize that. Now, I realize this is the last article I will submit for the paper as senior pastor at Calvary. On July 1,

Experience Joy!

I will be retired. So I want to say thank you to this community for your spirit of caring and for your remarkable support of Plateau Outreach Ministries, Helping Hand, Senior Center, Enumclaw Youth and Family, Ecumenical Thanksgiving Services, National Day of Prayer rallies and so many other ways. As my parting words, let me just summarize with a few words of challenge and encouragement. 1 – Live each day to its fullest; take nothing or no one for granted. You never know what tomorrow will hold. 2 – Love each other. Christ has given us the example of sacrificial love that transcends and forgives mistakes and hurts. It is a love that conquers all and perseveres to the end. Continue loving each other as Christ has loved you. 3 – Serve others. No matter what your life is like or what circumstances you face, your life is blessed so that you can be a blessing to others. Out of the abundance and blessing you have, serve others. 4 – Trust and follow Jesus. In a world that is fractured, polarized and uncertain, we don’t always know what the future holds. But we know who holds the future. By faith comes peace and assurance as you follow the prince of peace and allow him to reign in your life. Thanks for welcoming us and allowing us to serve with you as neighbors and friends in this wonderful place.

Fifteen years ago – May 8, 1997 – ended up being a life-changing experience. What many would consider to have been a tragedy turned out to be one of the greater blessings we have known in life. Why, you ask? For those who don’t know me well, I’ll make a long story short. I was run over by a bus – a church bus to be precise. Some people say the feel like they have been run over by a bus. I don’t think they do. In just a few seconds of time, an accident changed our lives. I lay on the hot pavement in Las Cruces not knowing if I would live or die. My neck was broken and dislocated between C-5 and C-6 level vertebrae, most of the skin on my back had been scraped off, my pelvis was broken in nine spots and my right femur bone was pushed all the way up and through the hip socket. I was unable to move and was barely breathing. But then people began to pray. Of course, friends and family in New Mexico where I had served for 14 years were praying. But people here in Enumclaw were praying, too. You see, Calvary Presbyterian had just called me to be their pastor. Judy and I were more than excited to be returning to the Northwest and particularly to Enumclaw. We had fallen in love with the community and with the people of the church. I was set to begin my duties in July. Suddenly, all that seemed improbable if not impossible. But I believe all those prayers
