Council OKs grant effort by Enumclaw senior center By Dennis Box Editor

An Enumclaw City Council quorum met Wednesday in a special session to consider a resolution supporting a community development block grant for the senior center. Resolution No. 1456 passed unanimously by the four council members present, Glen Jensen, Darrel Dickson, Kevin Mahelona and Chance LaFleur. The other three members were excused. The $98,990 will be used for repairs and upgrades to the center including electrical, plumbing and an American Disabilities Act accessible door. The grant application is due June 1, which is why the members needed to meet in a special session to meet the deadline. The senior center, located at 1350 Cole St, was built in 1927 and remodeled in 1970 according to city documents. The city purchased the property and moved senior programs into the building in 1984.

HOMELESS FROM 1 Using wooden pallets as a floor and an old mattress as bedding, Shaw had built a structure with a tarp overhead and a series of sleeping bags. “It’s my house,” he said. “Most everything was stuff I found and made use of it.” There were benches and blankets, desks, chairs, a golf bag and several utensils, all stacked neatly near the stove, giving the section of woods a campground-like feel. “I had to have a place to live and had nowhere to do it and this has been a real good place,” Shaw said. “I guess I knew I couldn’t stay here forever.” The section of forest, owned by Quadrant and slated to become a housing development in the future, was a quiet spot where the recovering addict called “a place to make a life.” “It’s not park land,” Shaw said, “that would be wrong.” But park land or not, Shaw was trespassing and on May 15, a sweep of the forest by the city of Bonney Lake Public Works and Police Departments led to the demolition of Shaw’s encampment, something he took with a grain of salt. “I guess I knew I couldn’t stay here forever,” he said as he watched backhoes tear apart his camp. His camp was discovered during the May 21 Parks Appreciation day in which residents walked the trails picking up trash and debris. Like many, Shaw is a recovering addict and found solace in the woods and the work. Several other homeless people cited Shaw as a positive influence on the forest, always working to help those that found themselves looking for a place in the woods to sleep. “If it wasn’t for Daryl, these woods wouldn’t be safe,” said Melinda Vollmer, who lived in the forest for three years. “He’s a good guy.”

The People Pat Williams, a program specialist for the Helping Hand House in Puyallup

has been dealing with the issue of homelessness in East Pierce County for more than 10 years. He said folks like Shaw are what sweeps usually find, though he said half of all of the homeless, according to their numbers, are actually families, many of whom live with friends or out of their cars instead of making a home in the woods. “It tends to be single moms, age 25-35, with a couple of children with very little education,” Williams said of the general demographics of the population he serves. Williams said most find themselves homeless after a loss of a job or a domestic violence incident or a drug problem, but there was no single factor that contributed to the population. “It’s just a conglomeration of so many things,” he said. Williams said exact numbers of homeless and families are difficult to know, because the problem does stay hidden from view. Marilee Hill-Anderson, who heads the STARR program for the Sumner School District, which offers assistance to low-income and homeless families to try and ensure the children get and education and the two meals a day the schools can provide. Hill-Anderson said so far this year, her programs has served 184 families, and they expect to serve 200 by the end of the year. According to HillAnderson, the primary factors leading their clients into homelessness has been the struggling economy and the high cost of living in East Pierce County, especially the cost of rent. “Families on fixed income can’t afford to live on their own in our community,” she said. “The vast majority of our families are living with someone else.” For reporting purposes, Hill-Anderson said “homeless” is defined by the federal McKinney Vento Act of 1987, as anyone without a fixed, adequate, or regular permanent nighttime residence, which includes not only the population living in the woods and hillsides, but also those living out of their

cars or “couch surfing” with another family. Between 2 and 3 percent of students in sixth, eighth, and 10th grade are identified as homeless. Hill-Anderson said in these hard times, many families are doubling up in housing, which for reporting purposes makes one of them homeless. In the Sumner District, 70 percent of students identified as homeless are staying with someone else and not actually on the street, which helps lead to the idea that it is not a problem in these communities. Among the 184 served, however, Hill-Anderson said the district counts 44 “unaccompanied youth,” meaning teens who are not in the custody of an adult or guardian, for whatever the reason. “When kids turn 18, if there’s economic stress in the family … it is not uncommon for parents to ask their kids - once they become 18 - to find a new place to live,” she said. Many of those end up with friends. Some end up in the woods. Hill-Anderson said at least one student was living in the forest at the beginning of the year. Hill-Anderson and Williams both said the lack of public transportation in the area has only compounded the problem as the poor and homeless often do not have reliable transportation and have trouble getting to and from employment, even if they could find work. Hill-Anderson said the loss of buses has hit the poor particularly hard. “It’s almost like being in a hole and imagine someone has taken your stepladder away,” she said. Williams said the biggest misconception about the homeless population is that they want to be homeless or want to live on assistance. “I have never found a family like that,” he said. “No one wants to live on welfare.” Hill-Anderson said in most cases, one or both parents are even employed, but simply can’t find housing in their price range. She said it was always difficult to find those people and let them know there is assistance.

“People need to know they are not alone,” she said.

Public Safety But while the school district and the Helping Hand House are working to solve the issue of homelessness, for city officials it is often one of public safety, which led to the sweep in Bonney Lake two weeks ago. “We want proper use (of the forest) dusk to dawn,” Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson said of the sweep. “There’s no camping, no fires. “We’re going to do everything we can to keep it clear,” he said. Bonney Lake Police Chief Dana Powers said they typically deal with single individuals living in the woods. “He’s what you’re going to find,” Powers said of Shaw, but added there are parts of the forest that are so dense, they can’t easily get into them. “I’m sure there’s a lot of communities in the woods we haven’t stumbled across,” she said. Powers said they deal with crimes like burglaries and shoplifting perpetrated by the homeless living in the area. “What kind of means to they have to get money?” Powers asked. In total, the Bonney Lake sweep through the for-

est found about six small encampments, as well as Shaw’s large camp. No families were found, much to the relief of Trails Supervisor Steve Williams who led the public works team. “We’re just thankful we didn’t have to run families and kids out of here,” he said. Shaw said he plans to stay over at a local church he attends, but was very sad to leave his place in the woods, a place that may not look like much but provided the com-

forts of home to him and many of the others staying in the forest. Shaw, like Hill-Anderson and Williams, said he was worried about what would become of the homeless populations of the region. “I have some things I need but I’m fine,” he said. “These people? What are they going to do?” Next week: The Hidden Homeless series continues with a look at services available to the homeless populations of east Pierce County.

Citizen legislature works best By Rep. Cathy Dahlquist For The Courier-Herald

I receive a lot of feedback on the makeup of the state Legislature. Some ask why lawmakers only convene for part of the year and others wonder why we aren’t a full-time Legislature. Each January, 98 House members and 49 Senate members convene in Olympia. That’s one senator and two representatives for each of the 49 legislative districts. In even-numbered years legislative sessions are 60 days long. In odd-numbered years, sessions last 105 days. The odd-numbered years are long because we are tasked with crafting a two-year spending plan. Essentially, the evennumbered years are short because we make small tweaks to the two-year

budget. While that has not been the case the past two years, when we had six special sessions, it is the more often than not the case. Like my counCathy Dahlquist terparts in the Legislature, I leave my home, family and job each day during session so I can represent the good people of the 31st District. I asked you for this job and I love it. I just hope as we think about how those in the Legislature can shape our state, we also consider why we value our part-time, citizen Legislature over an “only the most affluent can govern our state” system.

100 Years on the Plateau!

I think it’s always good to look back at perhaps why Washington state has chosen to institute a part-time Legislature made up of ordinary citizens. I can’t read the founders’ minds, but I imagine they envisioned real people with real-life experiences creating laws that they, too, would have to live under. Imagine, if you will, a Legislature made up solely of the most wealthy – those who can afford to work without pay. How do you think they would view tax policies? Would they adequately represent the hard-working citizens that aren’t so privileged? Our Legislature is a diverse group of ordinary, hard-working people: agriculturists, ranchers, tech engineers,

ELFERS FROM 5 voters. The more candidates can make themselves appear to be like their constituents, the more likely their constituents will vote for them. Like attracts like. On the other end, the more the candidates can make their rivals look “out of touch” or “elitist” the more effective their campaigns will be. Fear is a powerful emotion to tap. Both Democrats and Republicans use this to sway voters. In the 1870s, Southern Democrats used fear created through violence and intimidation to win elections. Republicans in our time use the fear of the loss of American values, the fear that our freedom will disappear through excessive government regulation and the fear that our money will be taken away through higher taxes. Fear hijacks reason. That’s why it’s used so often. If the candidates can generate enough fear against their opponents in the eyes of the public, it is likely they will win. Fear plays on a desire for security and certainty, something we all want in some degree, but security and certainty are hard to attain because we don’t know

DAHLQUIST FROM 5 bankers, architects, teachers, nurses and so on. They bring a wealth of experience to state government and offer diverse views on every issue, from health care to housing, and water policy to agricultural and land use practices. As a mother, smallbusiness owner, education advocate and many other things, I believe I am better prepared to analyze a host of different policies or at least know who to call if I need local guidance. Each hat we wear gives us a different perspective on how a law will impact our communities, families, schools and local safety net programs.

the future. Hope is the belief that conditions will improve (or stay the same) if a particular candidate is elected. This emotion is extremely powerful, especially in difficult times. (And when haven’t we had difficult times?) Voters will be roused out of their apathy by hope that their lives will be better – they’ll have more money, a bigger house and more happiness. It will stir people who often do not vote to vote. This particular issue is especially true with Democrats who are greater in number but also more apathetic as voters unless stirred up by the emotion of hope. Effective candidates play these emotions during elections. How well they play them and which emotion they elicit at just the right time with just the right group will help determine their success at the polls in November. Since we are creatures who usually make political decisions based upon these three emotions, wouldn’t it be in our best interest to understand how candidates use them to play upon our feelings, hijack our reasoning and get us to act in ways that are not always in our best long-term interests? Shouldn’t we start attuning our ears to the words of trust, fear and hope?

The beauty of a parttime Legislature is that I’m home doing all the things other families are doing. I am available to listen to residents at local meetings, in the grocery store or wherever. This is a good reality check for legislators – constituents have more opportunity to interact with legislators and share their thoughts on laws considered or passed by the Legislature. I know there are some who believe that party differences are dividing our state and nation. I disagree. While there are some at the fringes of each end of the political spectrum attempting to create divisiveness, the vast majority of us want to do what is best for our legislative districts, the

state and nation. Our part-time, citizen Legislature is good for Washington state. It encourages and challenges us to listen to new ideas and different perspectives. Bringing our life experiences together for the betterment of the state regardless of our economic situation, political affiliation or background is something special. Rep. Cathy Dahlquist is serving her first term as a state representative in the 31st Legislative District. She is the assistant ranking Republican on the House Education Appropriations and Oversight Committee. She also serves on the House Education; Rules; and Technology, Energy and Communications committees.

As the man once said more than 40 years ago, “The Times They Are A-changin’.” While wandering about the Internet, where many of us find ourselves when we’ve nothing else to do, I ran across the usual cornucopia of porn and, of more interest, some surveys indicating there have been certain significant shifts in public trends and behavior in relatively recent years. For instance, an NBC/ New York Times poll indicates American youth ages 18 to 25 are not only leaving rural areas, which has been the case for the last century, but are also forsaking the suburbs – surprise! – and are migrating into major

Dickson grabs two titles, White River takes second in state By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

Aiming to show they were among the best track and field programs in Washington, the White River High boys were an undisputed success. While dreams of a Class 2A state championship might have eluded them, the Hornets were a strong second at the threeday state meet that wrapped up Saturday at Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma. White River, behind the dual individual championships of senior Marcus Dickson, totaled 58 team points, trailing only the 66 posted by Ephrata. The White River girls, with fewer representatives at state, managed nine points and placed 20th in the field of 42 teams. Dickson, a nationally-recognized runner, claimed titles in both the 800 and 1,600 meters. He added a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters and ran a leg on the Hornets’ 4x400 relay team that grabbed second. Also taking a leg on the relay were Kody Gould, Austin May and Devin Liebel. “The mile is my race,” Dickson said. “It’s my favorite race.”

Dickson said he has been running “since I was a little kid” but got serious and began training when he was a sophomore. “I’ve always just loved racing,” he said. Another major contributor to White River’s team success was Liebel, the hurdle specialist. He totaled 14 team points by placing second in the 110-meter hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Blake Maresh added six team points with his third-place showing in the shotput. Also qualifying for the state meet but failing to place in the top eight were Scott Anderson in both the shotput and javelin; Nick Wells, 100 meters; and Austin May, 400 meters. For the White River girls, Lauryn Wate tallied eight of the team’s nine points. The senior placed fourth in the 3,200 meters and sixth in the 1,600. Jade Crawford was the other team placer, claiming eighth in the 110-meter hurdles. White River also was represented at state by Cassidy France in the 100 and 200 meters and the relay crew of France, Crawford, Johnna Coughlin and Cassidy Kunst. That foursome ran both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

ENUMCLAW HIGH Fastpitch The Hornets fastpitch girls played very well at the 3A state championship Friday in Lacey picking up a first round win and proving the program has a bright future. The girls won the first round 9 a.m. game beating Shadle Park 5-3 at the Regional Athletic Complex. The Hornets lost 9-2 in the second round to Everett and in the final Friday game the girls lost to Bainbridge 6-4. In the first game win-

ning pitcher Chloe Young pitched seven innings, striking out eight and giving up seven hits. At the plate Sarah Morrow hit 3-5 scoring a run. Against Everett Becky Forza went 2-2 with a double. In the final game against Bainbridge, Young hit 3-4 and Joslin Pierotti went 2-4, scoring a run.

Track and Field The Hornets track and field team competed at the state 3A championship last weekend at Mount Tahoma High Stadium in Tacoma. On the girls side senior Anna Marie Forza took a

tie for third in the javelin reaching 130 feet, 5 inches. Sophomore Maria Blad finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.82 seconds. Blad and Forza each earned five team points which placed the Enumclaw team in 28th place in the state. For the boys senior Cory Johnson ran eighth in the 3,200 in 9:25.42, earning one team point and 11th in the 1,600 in 4:22.93. Other boys who competed at state but did not earn team points included Logan Ross in the pole vault clearing 12-6, Kolton Carlson threw the discus 139-10.

Tennis The Enumclaw girls double team of Kayla Zillbauer and Camille Clare brought home eighth place after winning two of four matches in the 3A state doubles championship Friday at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick. Zillbauer and Clare, both juniors, lost their first match to Sophia Gage and Lydia Venditti from Mercer Island 6-1, 6-2. Mercer Island ended up taking second. The girls won their next round over Helena Eitel and Megan Hodge from

Marcus Dickson, White River senior, wins the 1,600-meter race at the state meet Saturday at Mount. Tahoma High Stadium. Dennis Box, Courier-Herald Lakeside 6-2, 6-4. The next match the girls won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 over Bishop Blanchet. The girls lost the final match of the tournament 6-0, 6-0 to Sofia Morrison and Sarah Morgan from Southridge. Coach Rick Carlson said by email, “For two young players that was a great tournament. (They) lost to a team that was in the finals then won against a very good Lakeside team. I’m very proud of them.”

Golf The Enumclaw boys and girls golf teams finished sixth in the state golf tournament played at Esmeralda Golf Course in Spokane May 21-23. For the boys team Tyler Salsbury finished sixth shooting a first round 72 and a 75 in the second for a 147 total. Chase Dolliver took 28th shooting a 77 and 80 for 159. Colton McCluskey was 38th with a 79 and 84 for 163. The team score for the boys was 48.50. Southridge High won the team championship with 96. On the girls side of the tee Tiffany Wilkening grabbed 16th with a first round 88 and second round

75 for a 163. Madeline Petellin came in 25th shooting 84 in both rounds for 168. The girls team scored 40. Hanford High won as a team with 121.50. Salsbury and Dolliver were awarded the WIAA sportsmanship awards

By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

WHITE RIVER Fastpitch The experienced ended all too quickly for the White River High girls, who were eliminated in the opening rounds of the Class 2A fastpitch tournament. The Hornets had advanced to the state’s Sweet 16, joining teams from throughout the state at Carlon Park in Selah. White River first took the field at 10 a.m. Friday, paired against Granite Falls High. A 10-4 loss tossed the Hornets into the loser’s bracket, where another loss meant elimination from the tourney. That’s just what happened. Seven more innings of state softball, played Friday afternoon, resulted in a 9-5 loss at the hands of the Cheney High Blackhawks, who had been blasted 12-2 by Tumwater in the initial round. In the tourney opener,

Sam Mitchell smacked a home run. This marked the second straight state tournament appearance for the White River girls.

Golf Trever Anderson was the only White River High golfer to make the first-day cut and survive to play on day two of last week’s state Class 2A tournament. Anderson carded an 87 on the first day of the tourney and followed with a 102 on May 23 to finish at 189. That left him 39th in a field that started with 80 golfers. Only half competed on the second day. Three Hornet boys had advanced to the state tourney, staged at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway. Playing in the state tournament, but failing to advance to the second round, were Ryne Peterson, who shot an opening-day 91, and Tanner Sherstobitoff, who finished at 98. Caitlyn Miller was the only White River High girl to make the state tourney, which was played at Lake Spanaway Golf Course. Miller just missed advancing to the second day of competition. On May 22, she finished her round at 100, one stroke away from making the cut.

percent do –which is cool enough until a major storm knocks out power for a substantial length of time. During the past few years, the national movie box office gross had remained constant, but only because ticket prices had increased. Numerous surveys, if we need them to verify what many of us have observed first-hand, indicate the actual number of people going to theaters has been dropping the past five years or so. Furthermore, the so-called blockbuster films are becoming more and more PG rated, family-approved fare and audiences are becoming younger all the time. There are some changes that social scientists attributed to the current reces-

the computer screen, but even this is changing. Bulky, personal computers are being replaced by laptops – both at work and at play – and the laptop, in turn, is being scrapped for tablets, iPhones, and ever more compact and portable devices, which suggests that, instead of sinking into the living-room couch, young people are at least out and about the streets texting their locations to friends. Along this line, a mere 20 years ago nearly 100 percent of adults age 20 to 30 had “land phones.” Today, only about 51

sion, but I suspect even after the economy recovers these trends may continue or at least stabilize near present levels. For example, 25 percent of single adults between 18 and 30 are living with lovers and have postponed getting married, which is the highest that figure has ever been. Meanwhile, the proportion of married adults is in decline; today only 51 percent of our population is married, the lowest that figure has ever been. Twenty-two percent of married couples have postponed having children or have decided not to have any. What unforeseen consequences these trends may have on the general society is anyone’s guess. I’d submit they’re

evidence that our economy is no longer based on industrial production – Boeing and the auto industry withstanding – but has moved well into the Digital Age and it’s this revolution that has sparked many of these changes. But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, much to my delight. The popularity of booze, especially beer, continues unabated. However, there’s been a shift away from regular brew toward lighter fare; of late, Bud light has replaced regular Bud as the best-selling beer among the younger set. The heaviest beer drinkers are still males between 21 and 30 years old. It’s reassuring to know some things remain constant.

Daniel Keith Reed Daniel Keith Reed, age 83, passed away peacefully on April 14th at the Life Care Center in Puyallup, surrounded by his beloved family. Dan was born on March 1, 1929 in Omak, WA., the fourth child of Henry and Gustie Reed. When Dan was age 6, Henry and Gustie relocated the entire family - Bud, Glenn, Margie, and Dan - to Enumclaw, where they had purchased a small farm Dan worked the family farm until the age of 22, at which time he left to serve in the United States Army. He was stationed in Korea from 1951 - 1953, bravely defending his country during the Korean War. Upon his return from Korea, Dan established a successful Hay hauling business, which he owned and operated for 16 years. In 1967, he married his partner for life, Linda. He and his bride remained in Enumclaw with their two daughters, Brigitte and Danielle, until moving to Buckley in 1971, where Dan accepted an offer to manage a large dairy farm. In 1975, Dan and Linda became proud parents yet again, welcoming identical twin boys, Michael and Mathew, to the family. In 1977, Dan purchased the dairy farm and soon became one of Darigold’s largest producers in Washington state. Over the years, Dan won numerous awards for quality and excellence in the farming industry. Reed’s Dairy, Inc. inspired individuals worldwide to visit the dairy in hopes of learning Dan’s techniques of operating a successful, state-of-the-art dairy farm. The farm also hosted many field trips for children from local schools.

For some, that presence is alive in contemporary praise music that connects to the rhythm of modern life. Still others find the deep presence of God in traditional worship, with an organ bringing life to traditional hymns. Some find real meaning for their lives in the good news of Jesus Christ read and proclaimed. Still others find a real connection to the Sacred in the sacrament of Holy Communion. So many different expressions and experiences of God. I think it is a blessing that many people perceive the presence of God in their lives and in the world in so many different ways. That perception of the Sacred, I think, comes from the diversity of how God is revealed to us in scripture.

Real - we value authenticity. Loving - we honor God and each other. Growing - we submit to His process in us.
