State, local gas prices among highest in U.S. By Reporter Staff

On Monday morning, gas prices in Washington state were listed as the highest in the Lower 48 — just a few cents lower than what drivers pay in Alaska and Hawaii. Washington state prices reported by AAA on Monday were $4.275 per gallon. The average for the rest of the nation was $3.58 per gallon. Gas prices in Mercer Island and Bellevue on Monday were about $4.48 per gallon. With BP’s Cherry Point refinery just ramping up production again after a fire in February, gas prices should begin to fall, said Jennifer Cook, of AAA in Bellevue. Gas prices in the state actually fell slightly over the weekend, she added. Considering that BP’s Cherry Point refinery supplies nearly one-third of the gas

used in Washington state, it is no surprise that it affects gas prices here, Cook said. For Islanders wondering why gas prices in Mercer Island are higher from time to time than other nearby cities, Cook explained that gas suppliers use what they term as “zone pricing,” setting prices differently for certain areas. Shahin Eighani, who works at the Shell station at 78th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 29th Street said customers do comment on the higher prices, but seem resigned to paying more. “This morning I had a customer say the gas price is too high, but no one cares because they need to drive their cars. What can we do?” Eighani said. Cook noted that despite the higher prices, gas station own-

ers or operators make the least amount of any part of the entire process — from drilling to refining to distribution. She said that the suppliers do not share information on those zones — where they are and how the differences in price are established. The price of fueling buses with both diesel and unleaded fuels has gone up dramatically. Todd Kelsay, Director of Transportation for the Mercer Island School District estimates that what he pays for fuel has gone up more than 100 percent over a year ago. The increase has occurred despite the fact that the district obtains its fuel through a statenegotiated contract. Kelsay said he pays the lowest possible price for fuel. The district uses 20,000 gallons of diesel each year, Kelsay said. “Unlike in the past, diesel is now more expensive than unleaded, going for around $4 a gallon. The district also spends $15,000

Island letterboxing begins again By Brita Moore

bmoore@mi-reporter.com

Mercer Island children celebrated National Trails Day by letterboxing throughout Pioneer Park on June 2. This is the third summer of letterboxing on the Island. Legend states that the activity began in England’s Dartmoor National Park in 1854, when a guide left a bottle that contained his calling card by Cranmere Pool and invited others to leave theirs as well. Hence the term “letterboxing” came about, as that is a British word for “mailbox.” Today, there are about 20,000 letterboxes hidden all over North America, often in public parks. Letterboxers search for clues as to where the letterboxes are via websites or word of mouth. The letterboxes themselves are small containers, which each contain a log book and a rubber stamp specific to the person who created it. Upon finding

District’s Fine Arts Advisory to fund first elementary school art teacher By Reporter Staff

The Mercer Island School District’s Fine Arts Advisory Committee presented a gift of $80,000 to fund a certified art teacher at the three elementary schools starting this fall. Following two years of fundraising for the ‘ArtBus,’ parent Megan Hand’s vision of providing art education in a moveable classroom using a renovated school bus, has finally been realized through the support of numerous generous community donors and a major gift from an anonymous donor. According to Anne Hritzay, the current president of the arts committee, the idea of delivering arts education has morphed from the ArtBus begun by Hand, to the delivery of art curriculum in the classrooms with teacher support at the third, fourth and

it, the letterboxer stamps his or her stamp in the box’s log book and the box’s stamp in his or her log book. Letterboxers are also encouraged to write their name, hometown and date in the box’s log book. Part of the fun of letterboxing is creating a “trail name” to write in letterboxes one may find. Letterboxing is also a way that children can nurture their respect for the environment. Letterboxers must be careful not to disturb any animal’s natural habitat in finding or planting their boxes. Participants may turn in their clue books to the Community and Event

fifth grade levels. The funds will provide approximately 14-18 hours of Washington state mandated art curriculum at all three elementary schools. Supporters say that this is just the beginning of providing a comprehensive districtwide visual literacy component to elementary education at Island schools. “For the first time in

Mercer Island history, our elementary students will receive foundation art curriculum from a state-certified visual arts teacher, starting this fall,” Hritzay said. The Fine Arts Advisory Committee is made up of community volunteers who, 30 years ago, saw the need for a music program in Island schools and helped to hire the first music teacher.

The French-American School of Puget Sound (FASPS) has officially received full accreditation from the French Ministry of Education for its middle school, recognizing its bilingual program from grade 6-8, its outstanding faculty and high academic standards. Head of School Eric Thuau announced the news. “Receiving this highly regarded accreditation is a testament to the great vision of the school’s leadership, the amazing work of an experienced and talented faculty, and the consistent support from its parent community,” Thuau explained. FASPS has become the only French-American school in the state of Washington with a fully accredited program for prekindergarten through grade 8. The French-American School of Puget Sound

was started by a few committed teachers and parents in September 1995 in the basement of a church in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle. The school quickly grew from 13 students to a complete preschool and elementary school, and with that came the need to find a more permanent facility. A couple of “portables” installed on a lot adjacent to the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC) on Mercer Island became the school’s new home in September 1999. In 2003, thanks to a capital campaign, a new onestory facility was built, and a long-term lease was signed with the SJCC. A second story was added to launch the middle school in September 2008. During the 2011-12 school year, FASPS welcomed over 380 students from ages 2½ to 14, and enjoys a community representing more than 45 nationalities.

MIHS choirs take first, third at California festival The Mercer Island High School Bel Canto Choir and Midnight Blues Jazz Choir traveled to Anaheim, Calif., May 25-27 to perform in a

Heritage Festival. “It was the best choir trip I’ve ever been on,” said director Tom Cox, who has taught in the Mercer Island School District for 20 years. “It was just awesome.” Both choirs succeeded in their performances, as Bel Canto took third place in its division and Jazz Choir took first. “I think both groups did an outstanding job,” senior choir member Jion Kim said, “and both choirs were very supportive of each other while they performed.” “Jazz getting first place was icing on the cake for us,” Cox said.

Besides the festival, the choirs spent their free time roaming through Disneyland and made a brief visit to Newport Beach. Kim said, “It was definitely a highlight of my senior year.” Cox hopes that trips like this will spur more interest in choir in the younger grades. “I’m thinking I might take my middle school group to a festival next year, other than our Eastshore Festival,” Cox said. “I think it would be a good experience for them. And they’d be able to see some other choirs and what it’s like at other schools.”

To the editor Islanders should have a say on the ‘road diet’

same as it is at 53rd, and, since I’m one of those drivers who’s content to plug along at 35 mph, I don’t see that forming a single lane earlier is going to slow me down substantially. I appreciate that some may bemoan the loss of the opportunity to weave in and out of traffic in order to pick up a few seconds. But I’m hoping that loss will be offset by the safety advantage of being able to turn into and out of the center lane. Frankly, I can’t say from here that the new Island Crest Way will be an improvement. I haven’t actually studied the data or the design and, even with an engineering degree, I’m not sure I’d be able to arrive at a firm conclusion even if I had. But it makes intuitive sense to me, and I’m thrilled that the city is finally going forward with the change. It certainly should be an improvement over the patch job we’ve been living with the last few years. Chris Goelz

I am in full agreement with Robert Andrews, who wrote to protest the ‘road diet.’ This should be a referendum. We should not be encouraging more bicycle riders on the Island. Just live off of West Mercer Way and see how much these hobby riders endanger themselves and drivers every single day. It takes a South-ender twice as long to get off or on the Island and home because of bikers. And they are ever increasing. Mercer Island’s hilly terrain may be “scenic” but does not allow for safe driving with the continuous obstacles of more and more bike traffic. And the city wants to encourage more? This is not being green; it is being very shortsighted! Gale S. Kessler

South-end driver hopes ‘road diet’ will make roadway safer

What exactly is the point of the ICW ‘road diet?’

Although I live toward the South end of the Island, I’m looking forward to the new Island Crest Way configuration. It seems to me that the traffic volume at Merrimount is about the

ISLAND

TALK

We have several questions about the so-called ‘road diet.’ What does it accomplish? What is its purpose? Does the City Council just like to spend the taxpayers’ money? The

Council has come up again with something costly that nobody wants. A road diet. We would like to see a detailed map of how the ‘road diet’ would look, and a detailed plan of what it is supposed to accomplish. This should be sent to all Mercer Island citizens. So that we could all have the advantage of an understanding of what would really happen to Island Crest. Then we should have a referendum. The City Council owes this much to all of us who live on Mercer Island. It would cost something, but it might save a whole lot of money and anguish in the long run. We no longer use West or East Mercer in good weather because those roads are owned by the bicyclists. Please don’t take away the only way we have to get to the North end! George and Wanda Hughes

Island Crest Way road plan makes no sense I’ve lived here since 1992 and never been tempted to write to the editor, but the insensitivity of the city to the real road traffic, patterns and near misses on Island Crest have made me less complacent. Our family lived for most of our time here in the northwest corner of the Island, and we weren’t as dependent on the main thoroughfare beyond

40th. Now that we live at the South end, we get to witness, on a daily basis, the near misses at Merrimount as people narrowly avoid being hit as they cross southbound traffic; the jostling as vehicles going southbound and northbound juggle for position before they have to ‘make the cut’ to a single lane at Merrimount; and the acceleration to 40-45 mph that many people make once they pass the people going 25 mph (in the 35 mph zone), going single file from the South end. The ‘road diet’ (a cute name for what’s likely to be traffic nightmare) will only exacerbate these problems. Does anybody who thinks this is a good idea actually live south of Merrimount?

I’d agree with the previous writers that the city administration suffers from a serious lack of confidence brought on from lawsuits settled, property bought for no apparent reason, grandiose school planning and now a road plan that makes no sense. We either need more transparency and information around the decision-making or citizen votes around the major decisions affecting life on the Island. Irwin Goverman

ICW four lanes not needed; staff identifies best solution I am writing in response to

earlier contributors regarding the Island Crest Way (ICW) ‘road diet’ issue. As a South-end resident and parent of an active high school student and his six younger siblings, I drive most of the length of ICW at least twice every day. The current interim Merrimount/ICW intersection configuration has demonstrated without question that four lanes are simply not necessary for ICW south of Merrimount. Extra lanes only encourage people to drive faster and change lanes more frequently, both behaviors that go hand in hand with poor safety performance. The City Council didn’t come up with the lane-

Kevin Liu, a golf captain and MIHS senior, will graduate on Thursday, June 7. said Liu. “You can be unconfident and say you can’t do this. I came from that background — a background of inexperience and inability, and I eventually developed into a golfer that was free of those shackles. My hope for each of the golfers on the team now is that we’re all young golfers, very inexperienced and [have] a lack of tournament play — I just wanted to pass along the skills that I developed. Sort of the swagger. I want them to maintain that.” Liu said the team’s last home match this past fall was one he won’t soon forget. The Islanders were doing well after the first couple of players came in, but then things took a turn and it appeared the team wouldn’t win their final regular season match of the year. “We had a last spark of hope as the last couple of guys shot better than we expected them to. It ended up being that we lost by about six strokes, I think, but it was a hard-fought bat-

tle. It was one we definitely could have won,” said Liu. Those kind of matches are the ones that may hurt the most, but it’s those experiences that help turn good golfers into better ones. Liu said his advice for the team next season is to remember that the older golfers have more experience. “Be humble,” said the senior. “I feel like confidence is more of an acquired quality than a granted one, so even though there are some guys who are very good — take age and experience into account. The older guys, even though they might not shoot better scores than them all the time, in the end they are more experienced golfers. They should definitely listen to their elders and the coaches.” It’s that kind of advice and leadership that made the senior the team’s only captain this year. “Kevin, as captain, proved to be invaluable this year, as we had a young team with a lack of senior or competitive experience,” said Peters. “Kevin was always positive and inspirational, and worked hard to develop a tightly bonded team. Although we did not have a winning season, it was one of my most enjoyable, and this was due to the teams’ camaraderie. He will be deeply missed next year, but in knowing this, Kevin has even sat with the incoming captains to discuss what makes a successful team leader; this is much appreciated.” Liu is going to attend Occidental College in Los

Football | FROM 14 Chiles himself is a superb athlete, who made his mark competing in both football and track at Kentridge High School. He was a running back and outside linebacker, winning numerous honors, including Defensive Player of the Year and MVP of the 1994 East-West All-Star game. He continued playing football at Boise State, where he started for two years as a defensive back. In high school track, he served as team captain and anchored the state’s second place 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams. However, he found out later that his greatest skills are in training and motivating youth. “Chiles has an infectious personality,” says Ogata. “I’ve never met one athlete who doesn’t like him. What makes him so good is that he is always upbeat and positive in the weight room.” Because high school athletes feel confident about their work and progress in the weight room, they’re willing to sacrifice sleep or social activities to attend the 6 a.m. and after-school sessions. “We have been getting about 90 percent participation of the football players during their off-seasons and some who are in-season for other sports,” says Ogata. The results are hard to contest. “In my first year at Mercer Island, we had close

to 15 injuries — such as torn ligaments — on the varsity team. The next year we had about seven injuries. Now, the kids are in better shape. Last season we didn’t have any serious injuries until the last game. We didn’t have any muscle-type injuries that are prevented when the kids are flexible and strong.” Ogata can’t help noting the change in the players’ physiques. “In my first two years here, we were the ones getting beat up [on the field],” he said. “When we played Bellevue two years ago, they just smacked us really hard, and we couldn’t do anything against them. This year, we were beating up the other teams. In the Bellevue game last fall, we injured some of their best players — of course, not intentionally — because we were really aggressive.” As Ogata explains, playing smart and safe relates directly to good conditioning — not just for muscle strength, but also for endurance. “When players get tired, they don’t cut as sharply, and that’s when injuries can occur,” he says. “They are more susceptible to injuries when they are fatigued.” Of course, Ogata adds, “you can’t avoid a broken bone due to an impact hit, but maybe a better [more in-shape] athlete could avoid

the hit” that could cause the break. In addition, while “there is no science in the world that says you can reduce concussions with exercise, betterconditioned athletes might be able to avoid hits in the head. But, I think the number of concussions on our team is down because the kids are in better shape.” Because of the players’ time and dedication with Coach Chiles, “We are probably one of the best conditioned teams in the state,” he says. “The kids are a lot stronger and bigger because of that.” And, after their work during the offseason, during “spring ball” and the summer months ahead, the boys will be excited “to prove to the world that we really are a good program,” says Ogata. “After getting a taste of what playoff football is about, they are highly motivated to taste that again and to taste that for longer.” After their two-week “spring season,” Island football players will travel to Evergreen State College for team camp from June 29 through July 2. They will also compete in “7 on 7” tournaments and continue with strength training throughout the summer. The first game is at home against Redmond on Friday, Aug. 31, and the following weekend the varsity and JV squads will travel to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, for games on Saturday, Sept. 8.

An assortment of farmers, food and fun Opening day is June 10 for busy 2012 farmers market By Lisa Katsman

Special to the Reporter

In 1972, I experienced my first trip to New York City. My family and I stayed at the Essex House near Central Park. I remember walking around with my family and thinking, do real New Yorkers know where their food comes from? My thought was those poor people think that peas and corn grow in cans, and bouquets of flowers grow in bunches ready to go to someone’s home. Fortunately, for us it is 2012, and the public is much more educated as to where their garden does grow. When did eating healthy and having a holistic approach to food become an activity of

the one percent? If people have access to good food and it’s fairly priced, no matter what their socioeconomic background is, they will eat it. Junk food is not always cheaper than real food — and yet, roast a chicken, boil potatoes and serve a salad with an olive oil vinaigrette, and you are immediately on the verge of breaking into the “foodie category.” Let’s blame it on marketing. We are an obsessed society of marketing with food labeling facts that are completely wrong. We on Mercer Island are very fortunate to have our own farmers market, entering into its fifth summer. Here in our own community, we can see what is available in season and not what’s available year-round from hothouses in our local super markets. We can actually talk and learn from the farmers themselves. Working

farm land is no easy task, and it is not for the weak at heart. These people work their land 365 days a year, rarely taking off for Christmas and Easter school breaks. This is backbreaking work, coupled with the love of nature and the land surrounding them. I was fortunate enough to meet with Tanya Bednarski, on the board of the MI Farmers Market, discussing the exciting upcoming events and positive changes with the market. The following is a sampling of events for the upcoming season. • June 10 – Opening Day Features Brock Johnson, chef, Dahlia Lounge, walking the market with shoppers, talking about cooking with seasonal and local ingredients, and providing a sampling from a recipe in his cookbook. Diane Larson of the Mercer Island Florist will create floral arrangements using market flowers and produce. • June 24 – Kids at Play Mercer Island Food

Revolution, sponsors of community dinners on the Island, will sample familyfriendly foods. The Parks and Recreation’s Fun Mobile will be in Mercerdale Park, and there will be a mini camp fair with YTN and PEAK. • July 22 – Mercer Island in Motion Fun Fitness in Mercerdale Park – Yoga Bliss and Jazzercise will do short classes, and Veloce Velo will have a bike obstacle course and safety check for kids. Susan Kleiner, an Islandbased sports nutritionist, will talk about eating for improved fitness. • Aug. 26 – Books and Bites Three cookbook authors will feature samples from a recipe in their cookbook and sign and sell books, including Andrea Lott with “Dining in Seattle: Past and Present.” • Sept. 9 – Farm to Table with Kids Casper Babypants will perform. Farm day with bees, chickens, goats and rabbits.

A salute to soldiers of compassion By Pastor Greg Asimakoupoulos

On Religion Columnist

On Memorial Day, we remembered members of our military who paid the ultimate price protecting our freedoms. We are indebted to them for their patriotic service. The blood of their sacrifice irrigates the soil of the American dream from which life, liberty and the pursuit of hap-

piness continue to grow. But we are remiss if we do not recognize the efforts of another army. The crosses that mark the significance of their service are not found in military cemeteries, but on the epaulets of the senior officers’ uniforms. I’m referring to the Salvation Army. They are soldiers of compassion on the frontlines of despair. This year marks the 125th anniversary that this humanitarian organization has graced greater Seattle with their selfless service to the homeless, hungry, recovering and dis-

advantaged. With uniform desire, marching to the beat of their own drum, these descendants of General Booth provide a longedfor melody in a discordant world. They give hope to the hopeless. With soap, soup and saving grace, these soldiers have consistently braved the odds as they slowly gain ground in a war that often goes unpublicized. Amazingly, they have maintained their evangelical identity and focus without compromise, all the while garnering the praise of federal and state gov-

ernment and other faith communities. They are a unifying entity in a season when political and religious schisms are at an all-time high. Like no other agency I know of, the Salvation puts feet to their faith as they intentionally walk their Christian talk. My heart warms whenever I find Mercer Islanders who support these troops.
