Alpenland is sold, to retain character New owners promise to keep essence of Island institution intact By Rebecca Mar

Alpenland Delicatessen has been sold. The new owners, Chris and Dianne Masaoka, will take over the restaurant on June 4. They plan to keep everything the same, from the menu to the European imports and the nutcrackers. “We’re delighted, absolutely delighted,” said Linda Gadola, who has owned Alpenland for nearly 15 years. The new owners, she said, have experience. “They are qualified, and we think they’ll do a great job. We know that they’re nice people, and that’s what we wanted for our customers. The main thing is, we were hoping to find someone who would continue to keep it as it is.”
Chris Masaoka’s grandparents, Carl and Gertie Krautheim, were the founders of Oh! Chocolate, another distinguished Island establishment, in 1986. Carl was German — a tie-in with Alpenland, Gadola said. Chris’s mother and aunt now run the chocolate shop, which has other locations in Madison Park and Bellevue Square. Dianne helped with purchasing, payroll and bookkeeping. Alpenland, which opened in 1974, went up for sale for the second time in August 2011, when Toni and Linda Gadola decided to retire because of Toni’s health. But, just as the owners before them, they will be slowly transitioning out. They will help the Masaokas settle in and “learn the ropes for
awhile,” Linda said. The original owners, in fact — Katrin and Gunter Bonnofsky — stayed on as employees after selling to the Gadolas, and only just retired last month. The Masaokas are previous customers of Alpenland, where they have many memories of meeting Chris’s great-aunt Trudy for lunch. The veal loaf sandwich is Dianne’s favorite, with a cup of soup. Her two boys prefer the French dip. Now, Chris — who has worked in commercial kitchens, and developed new flavors and products for Oh! Chocolate — is learning new recipes and techniques from Toni. He also continues to teach chocolatemaking classes at the Madison Park Linda Gadola, Oh! Chocolate. The couple Alpenland resides in Bellevue and is originally from Los Angeles. They moved to Washington nine years ago. “Chris and I both really enjoy small business,” Dianne said. “We like being involved in family-owned business, and we just

Last week, group of education advocates, teachers, parents, legislators filed an initiative measure that will authorize a limited number of public charter schools in Washington state and evaluate their success in improving academic achievement and outcomes for Washington public school students. We believe that once the voters have a chance to study this measure, a majority will support this effort to provide additional options for improving educational outcomes for all students, particularly students who are struggling and at risk of dropping out of school.”
vital shared school district resources, she noted. “Washington K-12 public schools must work for one million kids — not 5,000 kids.” The legislator, who has long been an advocate for schools and is a former school board director for Renton public schools, points out that existing schools can change and improve. “We have the ability to innovate within our existing public schools system and we are already innovating,” she said. New numbers released by the Washington state Department of Health shows the state’s whooping cough epidemic is only continuing to grow. Last year there were 146 reported cases in the first five months – this year the count is already up to 1,738. a controversial development in our community. However, as two high school students on the Island, we would like to express our positive support of this legislation. First of all, this ordinance acts as an encouragement for parents to be more aware of the activities occurring on their property, particularly when they are not at home. We have already seen this ordinance spark discussion between parents and students on the subject of alcohol consumption. We hope that it will continue to be a catalyst for these conversations. We want all parents to be aware of the pressures felt by their children in social situations in which alcohol is present. In order to eliminate these pressures we need not just a few parents on board, but all parents to be involved and active in talking to their children, creating

Do you store emergency water in your house? If you don’t please do. You should keep emergency water because when a natural disaster happens it could take away our regular water supply away. When you store water store at least 1 gallon per person per day. The stored water should be somewhere dark and cool like under a bed, corner of a closet or behind a sofa. Soda pop bottles or foodgrade plastic jugs. These work great to store water in. Also store your water in a easy excess place. You should have enough water for one week. Make sure to change your water every two months. If you have animals make sure to store water for them too. They need water like us. You can buy the water bottles at stores like QFC,
Rite Aid and Albertsons. When you store water you’re helping yourself. Sometimes your neighbors don’t know to store water. Make sure that you spread the word to your neighbors. They need to be prepared like you. You could keep extra water for elders in your neighborhood if you want to. It would be nice and a lot of help to them. You should also have stored water for babies. deterrents, and setting limits on social behaviors. For this vision to be successful we need a communitywide effort to create positive social settings without alcohol. However, the pressures do not just fall on the parents; students need to be involved and informed as well. Our community offers many ways to get informed in order to get involved. At the high school, the recently formed MATTERS club offers a gateway toward active involvement in the community informing peers on the dangers of drug and alcohol use. In both the elementary schools and the middle school, there are programs that encourage students to stay alcohol free. Students have a responsibility to their health, their peers, and their parents and the hope is that with this ordinance in effect, that responsibility will be more widely encouraged by the community and parents. Officer Dave Jokinent confirmed that additional officers had been assigned to be at the game, which

Mercer Island lost an important part of its community with the passing of Reverend Michael Mitchell. Michael came to the North Mercer QFC in 1999 and was promoted to Assistant Manager of the Seafood Department. Through his everyday presence in the store, Michael dispensed wisdom and guidance. He took a genuine interest in his customers and remembered their names and activities. Parents knew when they couldn’t find their kids, they would be in the back of the store talking with Michael. Michael graduated from Garfield High School in 1968 where he was a member of the Lettermen Club, concert choir and track team. As an amazing singer and dancer, Michael was one of the premier entertainers in Seattle’s Soul Music community. He was referred to as the “James Brown of Seattle.” He later met James Brown and they became lifelong friends. He began his career at the age of 14, as founder and lead singer of the Seattle-based singing group The Majestics. He later helped create Cookin’ Bag, which was a soulful singing group in the 1970’s. One of the biggest highlights of his music career was being selected to audition for the group Tower of Power. He won the audition to replace the lead singer but opted to stay in Seattle with his hometown group. Michael passed away peacefully on the morning of May 7 after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by six sisters, two brothers, ten children, twenty-four grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Norman Mitchell and Aridell Mitchell, founders of the Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church where his Celebration of Life Service was held; and by two sisters, one son and two grandchildren. 1,500 attended his memorial which was May 19. Many QFC employees and customers were in the audience. Many attendees could not even get into the church which was at overflow capacity. Michael’s daughter Michelle remembered her father, wearing his QFC hat backwards as he did in the store which filled the church with laughter. His QFC apron was on display with many sympathy cards attached. After giving his life to the Lord in 1981, Michael became a minister and began to preach the gospel, sharing his testimony with others and devoting his life to service. He was a member of AA and very active in the Cherry Street Hall and the 1504 Club of Seattle, two organizations which aid sufferers of alcohol addiction. He spent much of his time supporting others by leading them to Christ, helping them to secure employment and assisting them in their quest for sobriety. Donations can be made in Michael’s honor to The Atlantic Street Center which supports low-income children and youth of color in Seattle’s central and southeast neighborhoods. 2103 South Atlantic Street, Seattle 98144, 206-329-2050. www:atlanticstreet. org. 629122

Bainbridge beats Mercer Island in 3A state finals By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
In their first state championship game appearance in 11 years, the Mercer Island boys soccer team battled Bainbridge to the end, but couldn’t come up with the extra goal to tie the match. Mercer Island lost 3-2. Bainbridge attacked early on, earning the first goal of the game after just 10 minutes and added their second 11 minutes later to lead 2-0. Mercer Island fought back, earned several chances before Jake Michael headed the ball into the goal off a corner from Josh Lee. The score was 2-1 with 33 minutes left in the match. After 20 minutes of vying back and forth for the ball, Bainbridge hit the mark
against goalie Sam Miller to lead 3-1. Undeterred by the scoreboard, the Islanders kept pushing and Jordan Morris scored his first of the game with 10:36 left to go. Mercer Island frantically picked up the pace, looking to tie the game before the end of regulation. Despite their best efforts, Bainbridge held them off, taking the win and the state title. “It was a great game. We didn’t need to give up the two goals in the first, but that’s the way it goes. We came back and played our hearts out,” said Islanders head coach Steve Newman. Though they finished second place in state, the team hit the goals they set earlier in the year – winning the KingCo title and making
it to the final four of the state tournament. The team advanced to the finals after teaming a strong Eastmont team the afternoon before. “We feel good,” said Newman. “Like I told them we’re happy to be here. We gave it our best effort and we came up just a little bit short and had them on their heels. They are a good side, but we were still in it, all the way to that very last whistle. We had some chances that we didn’t finish that would have tied it which would have been sweet, but that’s the game. I don’t mind coming in second.” For the 10 seniors making their final appearance in the Mercer Island maroon, Newman said he hoped they had fun this season. “The thrill of being here,”

In the boys doubles tournament, Kyle Baska and Marcus Almqvist started off with a win in the quarterfinals, before falling in the semifinals to a team from Kennedy. They beat Quinten Dicken and Shane Sadlin of
Hanford for third place in the tournament. The Islanders brother duo of Zack and Ben Elliot lost their first round match, but went on to win the next four matches to take fifth place overall.
The Mercer Island girls golf team finished in third place at the 3A state tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Spokane. The Islanders had 82.5 team points, behind Hanford with 121.5 points and Mount Spokane in second with 95. “We lost to the best teams, they were very experienced and very deep,” said head coach Don Papasedero. “Hanford is exceptionally talented.” Individually, Mercer Island’s Chelsea Saelee was fourth overall, with a two day score of 148. She shot a 78 on day on and 70 on day two. Teammate Haley Chinn tied with Decatur’s Celia Beyke for 11th place with a 155. Chinn started with an 80 after day one and hit 75 on the second day. Jacqueline Bendrick also
tied, for 29th, with Hannah Davenport from Bellevue with a two day total of 170. Bendrick shot an 85 both days of the tournament. Jolie Shen finished 37th with a 177 total score, after a 90 on day one and 87 on day two. Mount Spokane’s Savana Bezdicek won the individual state title after a playoff, with a two day score of 146. All of the Islanders advanced to the second day, and improved their scores. Conditions were tough during the match, often wet and rather windy, but Papasadero said, everyone faced the same thing. “They all made a big jump in the second round,” said the coach. “They made a big jump on Hanford, and made up a lot of ground. That says not as much as Hanford, but more about the girls playing their game.” The Islander girls were

For the first time in three years and only the second time in 11 years, the Mercer Island boys lacrosse team will not be playing the state championship game. Bellevue won the state semifinal match against Mercer Island on Wednesday night 13-2. Bellevue quickly dominated the first quarter, scoring four goals, while the Wolverines defense kept the Islanders from hitting the net. Hayden Reisman was the

first, and only, Islander to score during the game. His first goal came with 3:59 left in the half. By then Bellevue held a 7-1 lead. Not to be outdone, Bellevue added another point with minutes of Reisman’s to hold an 8-1 advantage at halftime. After the break, Bellevue’s surge continued with two more unanswered points on the boat. Reisman scored the final Islander goal of the night with just 4.7 seconds left in the third quarter. The score was 11-2.
The Islanders defensive line held strong in the final minutes of the game, allowing only two more points for Bellevue, but Mercer Island’s offense couldn’t break through on the opposite end. Bellevue moves forward to play in Saturday’s state championship game against Eastside Catholic, which beat King’s Way in Wednesday’s other semifinal game. Mercer Island finished the season with a 12-2 regular season record and 14-6 overall.

team finished the season winning a fifth straight KingCo title, and have gone five years without a dual match loss, 53 straight matches. “We play everybody and definitely challenge the girls,” said Papasedero. This year’s girls team included four seniors, but Papasedero sees good

After finishing in first place in his heat on Friday, sophomore Eric Schulz finished in second place in the boys 3A 800 meter event. He finished in 1:53.51. Lakes Izaic Yorks finished in 1:50.56, setting a new state record by .40 seconds. “Schulz is one of the most promising runners in the State and he has years to go,” said middle distance coach Erica Hill. In the 4x400 relay race, Mercer Island took fourth overall in 3:25.29 with the group of seniors Nicholas Sinclair and Jeff Lindquist along with Schulz and fel-

The Islander boys 4x100 relay team also qualified for the finals, but the team of Risley Lesko, Nicholas Sinclair, Joshua Wong and Jeff Lindquist were disqualified in the finals after a baton pass disqualification. HOW A BELOVED SEATTLE MARKET HELPS TO FEED THE NEEDS OF
AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY.
When the owners of Uwajimaya Market wanted to relocate and enlarge an existing store in downtown Seattle, they turned to Bank of America. Since the 1950s, they’ve relied on us for financing to expand their operations, open new locations and grow their business. As a result, they’ve been able to better serve their customers, provide more jobs and strengthen their role as a focal point for the region’s diverse Asian community. Uwajimaya Market is another example of how we’re working to help small businesses grow and hire in the Puget Sound — and across the country. In 2011, we provided $222.5 million in new credit to small businesses in Washington — an increase of 28% from 2010. To learn more about what we’re doing to help strengthen the local economy, visit bankofamerica.com/Seattle
