Despite review, still disagreement on UW alliance validity By DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com

Jim Medzegian’s love of cars started early. As soon as he turned 16, he went to a local gas station near Franklin High School in Seattle and asked for a job. He worked there through high school and college and until he and his wife Joanne had their first son. “That job got me through college and helped us buy our first house,” Medzegian said. “Working there I always had

an affinity for cars.” And one car stood out among the rest: the Ford Thunderbird. That’s what he’ll be showing at this year’s Return to Renton Benefit Car Show and Cruise-In, a 2002 Ford Thunderbird. “T-birds then were really something,” Medzegian said. “I always liked them. And I love the new ones too.” He said the 2002 model caught his eye when he saw one of the first ones in November 2001. He also had a 1957 T-bird for a time and that car left a good impression for reasons beyond sweet looks and rumble of the engine. “That’s probably one of the only classic cars I’ve had where I sold it for more than I paid for it,” he said with a

A “re-review” by state attorneys and other outside legal experts has found that the strategic alliance between Valley Medical Center and UW Medicine is legal. The legality of the alliance was called into question in March by the commissioners of Public Hospital District No. 1, which owns the medical center in Renton. The district commission in May 2011 voted 3-2 to approve the alliance and bind the district to the contract creating it. The commissioners who voted no pointed out the agreement was rushed and they didn’t have adequate time to review it. In November Dr. Paul Joos was elected to the board, creating a new three-member majority with the numbers to challenge the alliance. Dr. Paul Ramsey, CEO of UW Medicine, in a letter to the commissioners June 29 marking the upcoming one-year anniversary of the alliance, wrote the UW’s legal team and the commission’s legal counsel had discussed the commission’s concerns Dr. Paul Ramsey as part of a new review. “This work has confirmed our previous conclusion that the Strategic Alliance Agreement is legal and is structured to further our shared missions of improving the health of the public in this era of rapid change in healthcare,” Ramsey wrote. Representing the hospital commission in the one meeting with the UW counsel from the state Attorney General’s Office were Bruce Disend, the commission’s attorney, and former state Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge, who had reviewed the alliance agreement for the hospital commission. “I guess you could say there has been dialogue,” Disend said of the one meeting. He said there is “no agreement of any kind or com-

Return to Renton show has 40 categories laugh. Ford came out with the 11th generation T-birds for just four years, 2002-2005, after discontinuing production of the car in 1997. Medzegian has always liked them, but finally made the choice to get one this spring. The car features an automatic soft top and a removable hard top with trademark porthole windows as seen in the first generation T-birds back in the mid 50s. His car has also had several aftermarket cosmetic touches. The car’s chrome and emblems were removed or blacked out, plus the headlights and taillights were frenched in (recessed into the car body). This is the show’s fourth

He was drawn to the show because it raised funds for youth. “I don’t think we would do all of this work if it was just a car show,” Medzegian said. “The fundraising aspect, that’s why we’re involved.” He said the show will likely turn over around $14,000 to the police programs, another record. Ask Your Lawyer by Dan Kellogg
ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW There is more to the practice of law than television’s depictions of high courtroom drama and criminal behavior. In fact, most people need the services of attorneys when preparing wills or trusts, or for a divorce. Lawyers are also experts in the matters of drawing up and reviewing contracts as well as setting up corporations and other business entities. Attorneys may be called upon to initiate or defend civil suits that involve a range of wrongdoing, including personal injury. In future columns, we will show you how to put yourself on the right side of the law. I would like to welcome you to my weekly legal column. I hope you find upcoming installments to be both useful and informative. I provide personal service and experienced advice in estate planning and elder law, as well as real estate and probate issues. I have more than 39 years experience and will handle your case personally. Please call 425-227-8700 to schedule an initial appointment at one of our offices conveniently located in Renton and Kent. The Renton High School Centennial is long over, but you can still read about it in the book “The Renton High Centennial Celebrating 100 Years: An Oral History 1911-2011” by Barbara Nilson. The book is being sold at the Renton History Museum and the Renton Flower Shop, at 323 Main Ave South for $25. It will soon be available at the Chamber of Commerce. Through interviews, the book chronicles 100 years of Renton High School history as told to Nilson.
The group, Sustainable Renton, has vision. The non-profit, established since December 2011, would like to see a community farm in Renton to benefit the city and members committed to making it happen. “This is a long-term project that will not happen overnight,” said organizer Chris Conkling in a email interview. “It could take two years, it could take 10 years. It is really about building community and bringing people together to help make Renton a healthier place.” Sustainable Renton had a brainstorming meeting with the community on June 24 and 13 people turned out. Some of the attendees had various experience with sustainable projects and interests in local food issues. The non-profit is currently staffed by a board of seven people and five to 10 semi-regular volunteers. They would like to model an urban community farm in Renton Chris Conkling after other farms such as 21 Acres in Woodinville, Marra Farms in Seattle and the Seattle Community Farm. Conkling has volunteered with other environmental groups such as the Green Team at East Shore Unitarian Church in Bellevue and has spent lots of time working with youth in some capacity, he said. He tries to live a sustainable lifestyle with his family, growing vegetables in his backyard, shopping at farmers markets and participating in community-supported agriculture. His family tries to buy in bulk and lessen their footprint on Earth in a number of different ways, Conkling said. “Having a community farm to grow our own food in our own community would

be beneficial in countless ways,” he said. “It reduces the distance that food travels, lessening our carbon footprint.” “It provides a place for children to see where their food comes from, giving them a hands-on connection to the food chain; it would provide a gathering space for families and local groups to attend gardening and cooking classes and local restaurants would be able to source their produce, fruit, eggs, and more from a farm right here in their own town,” Conkling said. The next step for Sustainable Renton members is to research studies showing the health benefits of local, organic food so that they have fodder and background information to support applying for grants and financial support from donors. They will start to create “test” gardens around Renton this “Having a summer to display community farm types of gardening to grow our own ranging from raised food in our own beds, vertical gardencommunity would ing to wheelchairbe beneficial in accessible gardens. countless ways” Chris Sustainable Renton Conkling has received feedback and interest from people on Facebook. Conkling said he recognizes the need for an urban community farm based on the fact that the current community gardens in the city have a waiting list. “There really is a swelling interest right now in reconnecting with our food system - not only on the national scale but right here in our own community,” he said. Members of the group are considering enlisting the support of the City of Renton Parks and Planning departments, Seattle University Environmental Studies department, King County Master Gardener program, Seattle Tilth, local permaculture groups, and others. Letters to editor Trees close to a house can be a nuisance, eyesore I know this is late for writing a rebuttal to Michael and Claudia Donnelly’s letter in the June 15 letters to the editor, but I get tired of people complaining about things that don’t affect them. I had a house built in Renton in 1987; at that time there was a policy in place, at least that was what I was told, that the city did not allow builders to cut down trees that did not interfere with the house. Therefore, the builder was going to leave an ugly, bent tree in the front yard of my house. I told the builder that I did not want the property unless he got rid of the tree. I should have noticed that there was a “huge” maple tree between my property and the neighbors. I had to pay to have the tree taken out so that we could build a fence between our properties, and my dear neighbor told me that if I had the tree taken out that I would have to have to root ground out, which I did. The house behind mine had a maple tree not four feet from their backyard sliding door, which they had to have taken out. Now, almost 25 years later, a maple tree, fir tree and cedar tree that were left there have grown to be huge. I get no sunlight in my backyard during the winter months, and during the rest of the time, I get huge maple leaves all over the backyard, helicopter seeds on my roof and gutters, and cedar needles on the roof of my shed and ground, plus an added feature is that it is the perfect thing for raccoons to climb up onto the fence. One morning, I found four young raccoons on my garage roof! Another case of people meddling in other people’s business was that someone I knew had a large farm in Bothell. The father was getting too old to farm. They had a buyer for the farmland, but, a university professor said that he liked driving down the freeway and seeing the farmland. Well, the good old professor put up litigation preventing the sale of the property. It was in litigation for a couple of years so the buyer backed out. Why didn’t the professor buy the land so that he could watch vegetables grow instead of meddling in someone else’s life.

Lots of questions regarding location of downtown library As a downtown Renton resident for the past 16 years and a new member of the City Center Community Plan Advisory Board, I have some comments and questions on the library debate. I fully understand the passion for the current library location over the Cedar River but allow me to ask a few questions. With new libraries planned in the Highlands, Newcastle, Skyway and expansion of the Fairwood location, does
a smaller downtown library make sense since less usage is likely? Are there detailed plans to renovate the Cedar River location available to study and what does that look like in amenities and cost? What are the logistical concerns of library usage while renovation takes place at the current location? Where and what is the cost of a temporary location during remodeling? I am glad this issue is coming up in a vote on Aug. 7 to give both sides a chance to make their case but I feel my questions need some answers to make an informed choice.
Jim Stanek Renton
Library location has turned into bait-and-switch I need to reply to a couple of letters in the June 29 issue, about the library. First, Jeff Dineen compares objections to the new building to resistance against earlier new developments in the city, such as moving the City Hall. This is inexact, as those changes did not involve moving to smaller facilities; quiet the opposite. We are being asked to accept being stuffed into a 33 percent smaller building, while so many other districts are getting bigger ones. This does not fit the needs of library users, as David McCammon claims it will. No way could we fit in all the books and computers we have now - let alone the ones I hope we will acquire in the future. Not everyone can do their websurfing at home, nor afford Kindles and other gadgets some claim will make books obsolete. Plus, some of us have physical issues that limits computer use, and need magazines and reference materials in hardcopy. Why should we have to go to Kent or Burien? Also, I find it hard to believe that parking will be better or access easier at the proposed new site, and bus stops wouldn’t be much closer. McCammon claims that the new building will have sight lines that prevent “unsavory acts.” But it hasn’t even been designed yet, and in 25 years
I have never seen anything disturbing going on back in the stacks. The part about long-term storage at Preston seems a red herring, as we want books on hand here, not there. As for usage increase at Highlands, I don’t expect that to make much of an impact down here. Then, McCammon states that reconstruction of the current structure can be more difficult and with more unknown consequences than putting up a new building. Well, I have seen some new buildings with unforeseen consequences, plenty of them. Another use has not yet been found for the existing building, let alone a clear idea of how much it will cost the taxpayers. An environmental awareness center? Councilman Randy Corman has done the research and assures us that even a modest one will cost just as much as a library. An arts center? Now that would fit right in at the Piazza. If the current library stays empty for long, it will deteriorate, perhaps even have to be destroyed. Has the cost of that been factored in, and the cost of a new bridge between the parking lot and the park? Why wasn’t this all planned out before someone decided to rush ahead and uproot us? For all of some people’s talk about revitalization of downtown business - and it will take more than a library to do that - I get the feeling that the powers that be aren’t really that concerned with patron’s actual needs. For 11 percent more money, we can hold onto 50 percent more library, in a location several thousand percent more fun. The interim arrangement will be a hassle, but worth it in the long run, just as it was in the late ‘80s. We in central Renton are being treated like some kind of backwater, not deserving of a big facility. We who voted to join KCLS feel baitand-switched. No one wants to feel like that. Vote for Proposition 1 - don’t let them shrink our library.

County warning of river dangers with mailing, signs The promise of long summer days in the Pacific Northwest might have residents thinking about heading out for a quick swim or raft trip – but it definitely has King County health and safety officials raising awareness about river safety. Even though the air is warmer, the rivers are still cold and the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, Public Health – Seattle & King County, and King County Sheriff ’s Office are urging recreationalists to exercise caution around open water. Public health and safety officials have kicked off a campaign to heighten awareness of river dangers and what people can do to help prevent drownings. A mailer that urges life jacket use and provides other river safety information – including resources for affordable and discounted lifejackets – will be sent to more than 30,000 addresses within about one mile of major King County river recreation areas.
And new signage is being installed at riverside recreation areas. The yellow signs – reading: “Warning, River is Dangerous” – are going up at more than a dozen popular river put-in locations on King County Parks land. “Rivers are dynamic systems, and they are always changing,” said Christie True, director of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks. “Warm weather and cold water can be a dangerous combination, and we urge all river users to exercise a high degree of caution and awareness when recreating on any of King County’s beautiful rivers.” “We want you to have fun
and also return home safely from river recreation, so please use caution and wear a PFD (personal floatation device) on the water,” said Dr. David Fleming, director and Health Officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County “If you want to swim, there are much safer places to be – visit a local pool or lifeguarded beach instead.” Before venturing into open water, King County health and safety officials remind river users to: Wear a life jacket; Do not use alcohol and drugs which can impair your judgment in an emergency;
Keep children within reach, always watching them closely near and in water; Choose safer swimming options with lifeguards present, such as a beach, lake or pool; and Know river conditions before getting in the water. The county’s river safety campaign is funded by the King County Office of Risk Management’s Loss Control Fund. For more information on river safety and drowning prevention, visit the King County river safety web page at www.kingcounty. gov/riversafety.

Many of Merrill Carlson clients are in the construction and health-care industries, along with other groups and individuals, Merrill said. “The same people will be serving the same clients,” he said. There won’t be a “dramatic change,” he said because of the merger. The company’s name for now is GALLINA Merrill Carlson but eventually that will shorten to GALLINA LLP, he said.
Location, Choices and Memorialization Most folks avoid this subject because it is uncomfortable to discuss. Our responsibilities as family service advisors at Greenwood are to educate our families and to help them understand their options.
Merrill will continue as the managing partner of the merged company. Carlson will continue, too, but Merrill said he will eventually reduce his hours. Merrill said the merger also provides him with an “exit strategy.” He is 57. Chris Carlson has become a partner in the firm. Merrill Carlson now has 12 employees, including Merrill and Eldon Carlson. GALLINA has about 225 employees. GALLINA officials contacted Merrill Carlson in
November; Merrill said his company was not looking for a merger partner. The talks lasted for months, he said. “What is exciting about becoming part of the GALLINA team is the ability to bring a greater depth in our bench through more robust resources to serve our clients as well as expanded expertise and greater capacity,” Merrill said. Larry Taylor, GALLINA LLP’s managing partner, said in a press release that “the business philosophies of the two firms are very similar. “Both firms believe in developing close, and long-term, relationships with clients by providing specialized services focused on solving challenges and achieving business successes.” “GALLINA is well known as a leader in the West Coast with strong expertise in construction while Merrill Carlson is respected within the Puget Sound region business community,” Taylor said.

Emerald Estates Gardens creates a lasting mark in memorialization opportunities. Private mausoleums, semiprivate estates and bench estates are just a few of the burial or entombment options. A specialized cremation garden has several placements for Urns or cremated remains. All of these are in a natural northwest setting near the funeral home.

Police investigated an arson at an auto dealership on June 24. Police believe the fire, which was set in the trunk of a vehicle, was intentional. The incident happened at Southend Auto, 3400 East Valley Road, at around 9 p.m. The fire department contained the fire, which spread to the back seat of the 1990 Honda Accord but the fire did not spread to adjacent vehicles. It was not known what if any accelerant was used or how the fire was started. Damage was estimated at approximately $850 and police noticed damage to four other vehicles related to the arson.
Mystery man with air rifle Police encountered a man with an air rifle walking near Maple Valley Highway on June 14. Someone called police to report a man was walking in a back parking lot in the 2200 block of Maple Valley Highway at about 8:50 p.m. The 58-year-old man was found in a southeast corner of a parking lot adjacent to the Cedar River. The man told police he was shooting at
Rash of graffiti A rash of graffiti covering private property has continued throughout the city. The manager of The Berkshire apartments called police on June 15 to report spray-painted gang tags all over the property at 130 South Eagle Ridge Dr. in Renton. There were tags painted on the front sign, electrical box by the office, on three signs in front of the office, the newspaper dispenser, and several more cable and electrical boxes attached to many buildings. Pictures were taken of all the tags.

Craigslist for a Renton property on June 26. A 43-year-old Renton man discovered the scam when an interested renter stopped by the house that he is selling. The interested renter, a Puyallup woman, said she had been emailing another man with the same name about the house. The 43-year-old put the house up for sale not for rent and used an online listing service. Police surmised that the suspects trolled the online listings for houses that looked vacant and then placed them on Craigslist. Two more people stopped by the 43-year-old’s house that day to inquire about renting it. The ad on Craigslist was eventually removed.
Loud party disbanded Police broke up a disruptive party on June 23. Someone called to report a dispute among a large group of people in the 2600 block of Sunset Lane Northeast at around 1:50 a.m. Police arrived to find 15-20 people in several distinct groups in the street. They appeared to be agitated and intoxicated. Police followed up with the party organizer and nearby resident.
Apparently someone’s cell phone was stolen at the party, which caused a commotion. There were at least 50 people still at the residence, some police believed to be minors carrying beer bottles. Everyone was told to leave and a copy of the case was sent to the Renton Housing Authority.
Walk-by car vandal A Renton couple witnessed a suspect damage their vehicle and take off on foot on June 24. The incident happened in the 2000 block of Northeast Seventh Street at about 1:30 a.m. The couple was sitting on the front porch of their residence when they saw a teenage boy walking down the street. As the teen got in front of their house, he turned toward the woman’s vehicle and punched it. This caused a large six-diameter dent on the rear quarter panel. The couple yelled at the teen and he took off. The suspect is described as a Latino, teenager, about 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, medium build, wearing baggy pants and a baggy black sweatshirt.

what they might do but we really didn’t have a clue as to what would happen. Besides, my mind was busy working on my own story. “I’m going to call Kim (the producer) and talk about having King & Bunnies provide the appliances,” I told Paul casually one day. “Wouldn’t it be cool to showcase local Renton businesses on the show!” I’ve watched enough reality television to see the footage reel in my head. My beloved real estate agent Mary Lou Gustine-Nelson would have her Renton Realty sign outside our house. McLendon’s friendly employees carrying in their quality materials ready to offer their amazing cus-
tomer service. The familiar plum-colored Bistro Box food truck pulling up to our house to offer their suite of tasty goodness. A coffee run to local Cedar River Coffee drive thru and, of course, I would be wearing my favorite I love Renton T-shirt. “Carolyn, I hate to break it to you but you’re a part of the show . . . not producing it. You don’t get to control what happens.” I understood what Paul was saying, but I was too steeped in my fairy-tale fantasy of our house being redone after stressing about it for so long and sharing that success with the city I love so much. The night before, we had spent all day clearing out all the kitchen cabinets and

WHEN SHOW AIRS Sell This House: Extreme Saturday, July 7, 11 a.m. A&E Paul and Carolyn bought their dream log cabin on the lake for $500,000. They wanted to give their three kids a picturesque upbringing. Fast forward two years and a fourth kid later--their dream cabin is turning into a nightmare! The family of six is quickly outgrowing the small space. But to move, Paul and Carolyn must sell the home for at least the $400,000 they still owe on it. New designer Daniel Kucan has a plan to completely change the space. And builder Charlie Frattini has to use a chain saw to do it. It is a log cabin after all. The team quickly finds out that doing major construction on a log cabin is no easy task. The stability of walls comes into question more than once and puts the build way behind schedule. This whole place might come crashing down before Tanya Memme even has a chance to put a speck of paint on the walls.

trying to clean as much as possible. At about midnight we happily escaped to the hotel. Our only itinerary for the next four days was to arrive back at our house at 8 a.m. the next morning. We live on a one-way road surrounded by trees and the kind of quiet neighborhood that allows you to hear the crickets and see the stars at night. It was 8:10 a.m. when we turned the bend and saw 15 trucks and cars of varying sizes sidelined in front of our house and an industrial-sized dumpster. We knocked on our own front door and an entire film crew was in our living room waiting for us – I finally understood what Paul had been talking about. This wasn’t a piece of writing where I was in charge of the beginning, middle and end. “Carolyn,” the executive producer waived me over to a corner. “Hi!” I said. “Would you mind changing your shirt?” she whispered. “No problem,” I said. I scurried through tangled electrical cords and film equipment to our room like a puppy whose nose has just been swatted. That’s when I ran into Charlie Frattini. “Hi!” Charlie said. He had a thick New York accent.

Life in the city
It was mid January when we found out that our house was going to be remodeled for A&E’s long-running hit series, “Sell This House: Extreme.” If you’ve never watched the show, host Tanya Memme and construction expert Charlie Frattini with new designer Daniel Kucan help desperate homeowners prepare their difficult-to-sell spaces for today’s tough real estate market. For six weeks after we received word that we would be on the show, we were pretty much kept in the dark except for a few things. 1. We would begin filming at the end of February for four days. 2. They would put us up in a hotel during the filming. 3. We were sworn to secrecy. Intermittently, I would get e-mails from the producer asking if I was available for the flooring guy or the cabinet owner to visit the house to “take measurements.” They were always very friendly . . . but were on strict orders to not let us see what they were measuring. Since the A&E network was paying for everything, we wanted to respect their process. Besides it was kind of exciting not knowing. We would endlessly chat about

ing the transformation of a total kitchen, dining room, living room and master bedroom remodel. Everyone pitched in. Over the course of four days all of us working side-by-side . . . from Tanya cheering for Paul when he was using a chain saw for the first time to the new designer Daniel painstakingly removed more than nails to create a one-of-a-kind custom bed for the master bedroom out of the original logs (think Depression-era) that came out of one of the walls Charlie, Paul and I chain sawed out. Charlie was right . . .we had all bonded. And what they did for our house in only four days was masterful. A new kitchen with marble countertops, top-of-the line
appliances, quality cabinetry, beautiful cork flooring, the perfect color scheme, three French doors leading out to our waterfront, simple but elegant light fixtures, real fabric curtains and staging that told a story in each room. “We need to just ride the tide,” Paul had encouraged that first day. Boy what an incredible ride. We are putting our house on the market this week as a For Sale by Owner and crossing our fingers.

House transformed in just four days [ CAROLYN from page 8] We exchanged pleasantries about New York . . . my dad was born and raised in Staten Island and Charlie reminded me of a younger version of my dad. “By the end of the show we’re going to be great friends,” Charlie said. I smiled at the thought as I walked toward our bedroom to change my t-shirt. Hoping but not really quite sure I believed Charlie. The first day of filming was a “Day in the Ossorio life.” Followed by an open house where prospective buyers came in and completely annihilated our space which we had to watch on tape back with Tanya and Daniel. Trust me it was almost as bad as being naked on national television. Afterward, Charlie came up to me and
handed me a sledge hammer and said, “Follow me, Carolyn. This’ll make you feel better.” I followed Charlie into the kitchen. It is amazing what wielding a sledge hammer fueled by wounded pride can accomplish. In less than 10 minutes I had completely “wacked” my hideous kitchen. The feeling was incredible. Every night Paul and I would go back to the hotel scratched, bruised, bone tired and battle weary from painting, wielding chainsaws, ripping out flooring, grouting tile, and whatever unskilled labor we could perform. For many DIY’ers these tasks may sound common place but Paul and I were babes in the woods when it came to construction. That is what was so exciting about coming back to our house each morning watch-

Plenty to do around Renton this summer | Outside From hikes to bikes, there's plenty of recreation options in or near Renton. Here is a breakdown of activities:
Biking/Running/Walking Cedar River Trail
The Cedar River Trail runs from Lake Washington past Maple Valley, offering plenty of scenery and only gradual hills. Bikers may want to park at Ron Regis Park and ride east to avoid the pedestrian-heavy areas and speed limits through much of downtown Renton. Also make sure to watch out for others, especially on weekends and afternoons, since the trail can get busy. How to get there: Access and parking is available at several points along the trail.
Mountain biking Towers of Power trails
Towers of Power has two things going for it: It's close and its variety. Located near Philip Arnold Park,
the trail system is a short drive for much of Renton. It also has more difficult, skillbuilding trails connected by a wider path that works for beginners. It would be wise to take a first ride through slow and easy because there are drops, jumps, logs and other obstacles that could throw newer riders for a loop. It's also important to keep your eyes open. There are several narrow, downhill portions. So if you stop in one of these areas, remember to move aside. How to get there: Park at Philip Arnold Park and head right on Beacon Way. The two entrances are on your right off of Beacon Way.
Hiking Tiger Mountain West No. 3 Trail
West No. 3 Trail offers a great panoramic view of Seattle at the top. The hike to the top and back is a little more than five miles with roughly 2,000 feet of elevation change. There's interesting scenery on the

way up, but make note that bikes are not allowed on the trail. How to get there: Take Exit 20 off of I-90, about three miles east of Issaquah, and take a right at the bottom of the ramp. Take a right at the intersection nearby and follow the road to the parking lot.
Cougar Mountain Anti-Aircraft Trail
The Anti-Aircraft Trail is low on challenge, but high on neat things to see. You'll come across a clay mine (ugly from a distance, but interesting up close), a covered
mine shaft, of course the "Million Dollar View" near the parking lot overlooking Lake Sammamish. How to get there: From Renton, take exit 10 at Coal Creek Parkway Southeast off of 405 north and turn right onto Coal Creek Parkway. Turn left onto Forest Drive Southeast. Take a left at Lakemont Boulevard Southest. Then turn at the first right onto Southeast Cougar Mountain Way. Continue onto 168th Place Southeast, which turns into Southeast 60th Street. Take a slight right at Southeast Cougar Mountain Drive. Then just follow Cougar Mountain Drive until you reach the parking lot.
Canoe and kayak Renton Boathouse and Paddlesports Shop
There are plenty of options from rentals, to classes, to day trips. Go to canoe-kayak.com/locations/ renton for more information. How to get there: The office is located at 1060 Nishiwaki Lane in Cedar River Trail Park.

common understanding” between the hospital board and the UW regarding the validity of the Strategic Alliance Agreement. “I am saying it’s still an open question,” he said. The hospital commission has considered filing a lawsuit challenging the alliance agreement. Disend said the commission hasn’t ruled
out any of its options. Louis Peterson is a wellknown Seattle attorney who acted as a special attorney general for the UW during the review. In an interview he pointed out that the Strategic Alliance Agreement was negotiated between the UW and Valley Medical for many months, with public input; each side had the advice of “very experienced lawyers.” In approving the agreement, Peterson said, the commission “warranted” that the district had the power and authority to enter into the agreement.
“I expect you will join me in working to improve the health of the public we serve.” Dr. Paul Ramsey, CEO, UW Medicine
It’s surprising a year later that the board is saying the agreement was beyond the scope of its authority or that it was invalid, he said. Various state statutes clearly give the commission authority to enter such agreements, he said. After his review of the agreement, Phil Talmadge concluded the agreement takes away the board’s
“legal authority to manage and operate the hospital district. In so doing, it disenfranchises the voters who created the district, who support the district through their tax dollars and who chose the commissioners they want to operate the district.” Peterson said the commission’s concerns received by UW Medicine lawyers before the meeting with Disend and Talmadge. The attorneys “carefully explained” the agreement’s validity to the two lawyers, he said. “All of the concerns raised by the district were
taken seriously,” he said, but none of them were valid based on a review by the university, senior lawyers and outside counsel. Ramsey, the UW Medicine CEO, said in an interview “the work has been done in a very careful and thoughtful fashion.” “In light of our shared goal of improving health, I anticipate that you will support the signed Strategic Alliance Agreement,” Ramsey wrote in his letter to the commissioners. “This is important and critical work for the community that requires our full attention and energies. I expect that

Decayed or decaying baby teeth can potentially represent active infection in the mouth. Anytime there is infection in the body or mouth, it requires immediate attention by a physician or dentist, respectively. Long term, if baby teeth are left to rot, fall out, or get extracted, there is greater potential for permanent teeth to grow in and shift requiring future orthodontic care.
