he Enumclaw High class of 2012 took the commencement walk at the White River Ampitheatre June 11, ending their high school education journey and beginning the next stage of their lives.
The commencement ceremony included performances by the Enumclaw High School wind ensemble, senior choir and concert choir Enumclaw High Principal Jill Burnes recognized the students receiving honor awards.
“Enumclaw High School has been awarded national, state and local scholarships in excess of $822,836 for next year. Congratualtions,” Burnes said. Several students addressed the gathering during the ceremony. “We’ve been waiting for this moment our entire lives,” class speaker Lilly Dodd said. “But I don’t know if we ever faced the reality it would actually happen. But here we are at gradu-
ation.” Reece Menzel and Dakotah Maxwell performed a duet singing, “Time of your life.” Class speaker Jacob Kokko said, “Tonight we are highschool graduates. Tomorrow we will be adults making the first few steps into the rest of our lives. The rest of our lives are exciting because we have so many bright things in our future. But it is also somewhat scary.” Superintendent Mike Nelson said, “I do hope you will always be proud of being a graduate of Enumclaw High School. I know I am.”

Dear Neighbors, Governing these last few years has been difficult; government has seen significant cuts and we are asking workers to do more with less. In the last two years, I voluntarily cut my own legislative pay, to help see that our kids get a quality education. As your State Representative, I have been working to drive tax dollars into the classroom and reduce overhead. During these same years, my opponent, Lisa Connors, a local Auburn School Board member, has been traveling out of state extensively on your tax dollars. She spent thousands of dollars on trips to Orlando, San Diego, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and other locations around the country.
These expenditures, as a local school board member, don’t help 4th graders learn to read or 8th grade teachers prepare for their classes. I know teachers who are paying for class supplies out of their own pockets. Why was Lisa Connors traveling to these national conferences?
If you can’t trust a person to use your hard earned tax dollars wisely as a local school board member, think of what they will do in the state legislature. As your State Representative, I will sponsor legislation next January which will restrict all out of state travel for local school board members at taxpayer expense, keeping your tax dollars in the classroom where they belong.

years. Our glaciers and ice caps are melting, raising the sea level. The tide station at Miami Beach has increased by seven inches since 1935. Alaskan permafrost is melting, causing entire towns to shift and sink. In the past two decades, the world’s deserts have expanded by thousands upon thousands of acres.
“Since day one of my hiring, I have been the victim of multiple acts of discrimination and harassment (sexual and otherwise),” Zilbauer wrote in her claim, adding that both the city and its police department neglected to respond to repeated complaints. She was initially
hired for a corrections job and later joined the police force as a patrol officer. Among Zilbauer’s claims: • she and Grant were both hired in June 2007 to perform the same duties, but Grant was awarded a higher rate of pay; • she was unfairly singled
out for extended periods on the graveyard shift; • and, when hired as a patrol officer, she was again started at a lower pay grade than a departmental peer. “This is truly outrageous and illegal,” Zilbauer wrote in her claim. “I have suffered tremendous financial loss in pay, overtime and retirement.” As a result of specific overt actions by the named individuals, followed by the city’s inaction when complaints were lodged, Zilbauer wrote that she had suffered “severe emotional distress.” Brunelle, who came to
Enumclaw in August 2009 with 11 years of experience as a corrections officer, alleged she was made to feel unwelcome from the beginning of her employment. She wrote that she and Zilbauer were ordered through more training than other corrections officers, only because of their gender. Brunelle also claimed: • her starting rate of pay was less than she had been promised; • she was assigned a disproportionate amount of time on graveyard shift; and • she was subjected to “extremely offensive sexual, racial and other types of harassing remarks.” Like all governmental entities, she wrote, the city of Enumclaw and its police department “have a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against harass-
ment of any kind. Obviously, I have come to realize that this policy is more theory than reality.” Asked for comment about the settlement, Kim provided an emailed statement: “Legal actions are time and resource intensive. The women wanted to move on. It’s also a small department. Suing such a department while still working there would create an untenable situation. Racists, sexists, and bigots are prevalent in law enforcement. Nature of the biz so to speak. It is very hard for women and minorities. We’ll keep an eye on Nona and Amber going forward and see if the department is committed to compliance with Title 7, WLAD.” The WLAD is the Washington Law Against Discrimination.

Seniors need to avoid becoming “unscoreable” You’ve spent your whole life managing your money with flawless proficiency. You have a sparkling credit score and very little debt. But is it possible to get to a point where you have so little debt that you could actually fail to register a credit score? For senior individuals who have paid off most of their major debts, like home and auto loans, and don’t use credit cards or store retail credit on a regular basis, the possibility of becoming “unscoreable” exists. This can happen because credit score models rely on recent credit activity in order to generate an accurate score. If all recorded credit activity has stopped, then there’s no recent information to use as the basis for a credit score. As a recent Experian study points out, older individuals tend to have better credit scores, so it’s important to do what you can to sustain yours. Why is having a credit score important for seniors? If you’ve paid off your mortgage and have plenty of savings on hand to last you the rest of your life, you might wonder why maintaining a credit score would be important. Although you may not be planning on taking out another home loan or making other major purchases on credit, you may need a score for other life
events, such as financing unexpected needs; applying for rental housing if you plan on selling your house and downsizing; establishing an account with a cellphone provider or other utility; acting as a co-signer on a loan; or entering into a reverse mortgage How to avoid being “unscoreable” While it may seem logical to close accounts that you don’t use or need, you can keep your score active by maintaining them. This is especially important if you’ve paid off your mortgage and auto loans. VantageScore, which has the ability to provide a credit score to a broader population of consumers with limited credit histories, recommends keeping at least one credit card active. It’s a good idea to use each of your accounts at least once every 24 months so that your payment data gets reported to the three national credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can avoid incurring interest simply by paying off your balance after making a purchase. If you want to close out credit card accounts, it’s best for your credit profile if you keep the oldest accounts active. Credit score models put greater emphasis on the older credit accounts in your credit files because it
demonstrates that you have a reliable history of on-time payments. What to do if you find yourself without a credit score If you end up in this situation, VantageScore recommends opening a secured credit card, which is a credit card that includes a deposit. Be sure the card issuer reports payments to the three major CRCs. Some of these cards convert to a regular credit card after a certain period of time. Another option is to work with a lender that offers manual underwriting, or one with whom you already have an established relationship and knows your finances. Some of the major lenders have the ability to issue credit the oldfashioned way by reviewing your credit files and other data to determine the specific terms if you qualify for a loan. Here again, be sure to work with a lender that is reporting payments so you can re-populate your credit files. Once you begin rebuilding your credit, you will actually become eligible to receive a VantageScore credit score as soon as one month after a lender first reports your payment information to the CRCs, though for other models this timeframe could be as great as six months later. Doing what you can to
maintain the credit score you’ve worked so hard to establish over the years is important. If you do end up without a credit score,

It’s time to tidy up not just iris but any perennial plant that has bloomed and left behind the remains of the party. Follow the stem all the way to the base of the plant and cut off the entire stalk, leaving the foliage behind. The best time to move or divide bearded iris in our climate is early September.
Be sure you do not bury the knuckle-like roots too deep. They need to sit nearly on top of the soil with just the lower half buried. You can cut back the strappy leaves when you dig and divide iris but leave at least 4 inches of foliage. Bearded iris also need good drain-

Tough times are toughest on teens “Why don’t you get a job?” It’s the age-old summertime refrain passed from every parent who hopes to develop their teen’s work ethic and let the couch cushions air out. As a teen living in a growth explosion area of California, in the middle of the Bush-era economic boom, my only obstacle to gainful employment was a brisk walk to one of many new Starbucks; every day I didn’t have a job, it was only because I was lazy. That remained true after I relocated to Washington state: from age 17 to 22, I was a barista, a gofer, a shoe salesman, a Teamster and Daniel Nash a barista again. Reporter Each time, I would decide one day I wanted to be a thing, and a week later I would be that thing. The economy was good. But today’s jobless teens and young adults can respond to their parents, without snark (but probably adding a little snark, anyway): “No one’s hiring.” Of course, that’s not strictly true. If businesses had stopped hiring young people entirely, I wouldn’t feel so suddenly old every time I go to the movie theater. Teen workers nationwide bear the brunt of unemployment with a rate just under 25 percent. Pierce County already outpaces the country (9 percent, but improving), so it’s not unreasonable to postulate that teen unemployment is proportionately worse. The prospect of no work for teens is a terrifying one. You can write off money as a concern. You can champion the educational alternative. But a job is an education in its own right. We all remember our first job; people tend to remember their first trip to Hades. No, the job isn’t materially worse than others of its kind, or other jobs you’ll hold in the future. But your inaugural job has something no other job will ever have again: that first sweet moment when you feel really, really stupid. That first job is a trial by fire and the reward at the end of the working day isn’t money so much as it is work ethic, a sense of responsibility and properly calibrated expectations for the adult world. And the reason it’s a living hell isn’t the working conditions; it’s the realization – at an age when you think you know everything – that you didn’t know anything. Everyone has to confront that hump. So it’s scary to consider that more people aren’t approaching that milestone until their early 20s, after college and with jobs that have greater consequences for shoddy performance. The term “double-dip recession” – a recession followed by a few quarters of growth, then another recession – has been used quite a bit in describing the economic activity in the past five years. If the job market doesn’t become more amenable to our teenagers soon, we face a double-dip recession in the long-term. And the second drag will be driven by a large, untrained, inexperienced and possibly consequently incompetent work force. All because no one could afford to take an early chance.

I like the flowers but not the foliage that keeps getting bigger. The leaves of these poppies look a bit like giant dandelions so that adds to their ugliness. Any ideas? When it comes to the robust Oriental poppy you can cut the foliage all the way to the ground or just tear off the older outer leaves as they turn yellow. Either way, the deep tap root will survive and you’ll still see blooms next spring. In our rainy climate these magnificent flowers are often short-lived as the paper-thin petals are washed off by rain storms. Enjoy
them longer by harvesting the buds just as they crack and the color from the petals begins to show. Enjoy the blooms indoors or in a vase under a covered porch or patio where they are protected from the rain.

Enumclaw’s Ritzdorf off to Jamestown Enumclaw High graduate Eric Ritzdorf has signed a letter of intent and accepted a scholarship to play football for Jamestown College. The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder is projected to play defensive end for the Jimmies. Jamestown College boasts approximately 940 students on its campus in Jamestown, N.D. Athletically, the small institution offers eight sports for men and nine for women, competing in the Dakota Athletic Conference. The league is made up of eight private colleges, all found in North Dakota or South Dakota.

John Webster Baker, age 84, died May 22, 2012 in Centralia, WA. He was born July 10, 1927 at the family farm in Enumclaw, WA to Ira and Norma (Rokes) Baker. He graduated from Enumclaw High School with the class of 1945. After high school, John served in the US Marine Corps. While visiting his cousin in Illinois, he met his future wife, Norma. They married in 1950 and settled in Illinois after his honorable discharge from the Marines. They farmed there for several years and returned to Enumclaw in 1958. He was in the construction industry, started his own business, and then worked for the City of Enumclaw until his retirement in 1982. At that time, they began spending winters in Desert Hot Springs where they made many dear friends over the years. They later moved to Napavine, continuing to spend winters in Desert Hot Springs. He enjoyed music, camping and spending time with friends and family. While living in Enumclaw, John was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, and he attended Napavine Baptist Church after their move to Napavine. He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughters, Susan (Steve) Bloomer, Connie Baker; son, Steve (Lori); four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Robert ( Janet); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Lewis; and his sister, Esther Workman. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on June 23 at the Napavine Baptist Church. Many years ago, a wise person said to me, “Man’s total responsibility to God is simply to respond to his love!” It would take years for me to really understand the magnitude of this profound truth. I want to spend the next 600 or so words attempting to reveal the gospel in the most pure, bold and
become children of God, and our born again spirit is forever separated from our sinful flesh. Our flesh however does not change and will never change. It will always fail and fall short. For this reason we do not put our confidence in our flesh, but in the power of God. Your failures in the flesh will not undo the operation of God in the spirit. Even when you sin your righteousness and salvation are not put in jeopardy. That would be double jeopardy since Christ already paid the debt for your sins. Your sins are not imputed against you anymore, but Christ’s righteousness is counted for you. You are forever perfected in God’s sight by his love. When he sees you, he sees his son Jesus. Remember that your salvation has never and will never be earned by you. So stop thinking that you lose your salvation every time you sin and rest in the finished work of Christ. You are saved by grace and you will only stay saved by grace. When this revelation of the new covenant evolves from church theology to church psychology we will see the church rise. God’s love will shine so brightly that sinners will run to God rather than from God in these last days. This is the Good News of Christ.

Log Show parade rolls at 10 a.m. Saturday By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Super-volunteer Steve Britton will reign as grand marshal Saturday morning when the Log Show parade makes its way along Buckley’s Main Street. The annual event, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, kicks off two days of fun in Buckley. The parade gets rolling at 10 a.m. Chamber president Richard Ridge said those lining the street will see the traditional lineup of logging trucks, school entries and more. Following the parade and before heading to the Log Show grounds for the excitement of competition, everyone can head to River Avenue and the block-long row of vendors offering food and drink, services, gadgets and games. Ridge said the list of vendors has jumped significantly since last year. In 2011, the event attracted 58 vendors and, as of last week, 75 had registered. Britton has made a name for himself on both sides of the White River since moving to Buckley just two years ago. A self-described “small-town boy,” Britton is pleased to have landed in a cozy community after retiring and fleeing the urban sprawl of Houston, Texas. Britton can be found every weekend changing the reader board along state Route 410 and has volunteered for other duties with both the chamber and the city. His willingness to help has expanded to Enumclaw, where he has been involved with the annual street fair and events at the Expo Center.

Log Show competitors have the opportunity to test their skills in a variety of events. These quick descriptions are taken from the show’s Web site: Speed climb: Contestants will climb a 75-foottall spar tree and ring the bell in the timed race. The climber begins with one spike in the tree and one on the ground. The time stops when the climber reaches the top and rings the bell.
Obstacle bucking
Contestants begin on the start log, run across poles over the pond to the main log where they use a chainsaw to cut through a 14-inch alder. The time stops when the chip hits the ground. The top six times will compete in the finals on Sunday. Combined times from both days will determine the winner.
Horizontal block chop Contestants will stand
astride a 10-inch alder and chop through the log. Approximately halfway through, the chopper will reverse position on the log to finish. Time starts with the whistle and stops when the log is chopped through. The top six times will compete in the finals on Sunday. Combined times from both days determine winners.
Choker setting
Contestants will begin on the starting log, run across the pond to cross the main log at opposite end of the arena. After crossing the main log, contestants will “shag” a three-quarter-inch choker back over the pond and set it on the start log, attaching the knob into the bell for a qualifying time. The choker must be set for a qualifying time.
Double bucking
Contestants will work in teams of two. The saw will be buried to a depth of the
teeth in a 12-inch alder log. Time stops when the chip hits the ground.
Ax throw
Contestants are allowed one trial throw, then three competitive throws. Using a 6-inch blade or smaller, weighing 2 pounds or more with a handle of 21 inches or longer, an ax will be thrown at a 4-inch bull’seye from 20 feet. Five points are awarded for a bull’seye, or contestants can be given three of four points for throws thaqt are close.
Splicing
Two-man team splices an eye in a length of cable using Marlin spikes and hammers. The splice must be neat or it will be disqualified. Before time starts, a loop is formed in the cable and spiked to the block. At the signal, the teams begin splicing and throw up their hands for a finished time. The top six teams will
www.courierherald.com compete in the finals on Sunday. Combined times from both days will determine the winner. Hot saw, limited: Contestants will use their own stock power saw. The carburetor, muffler and starter rope must be stock. All saw gas for this even is supplied by the Log Show.
Modified hot saw
This is a no-point event. Only a first-place trophy is given. Points are not counted toward All-Around Logger. Double-ender chainsaws or chainsaws with expansion chambers are entered in this event.
Hot saw, unlimited
This is a no-point event. Contestants may use any modified saw. A first-place trophy is awarded for the fastest time. Usually a twomanned saw is entered in this event.
Tree topping
The climber starts with one spike in tree and one on the ground, climbs 75 feet to top of spar poles and saws through a 7-inch log. The time stops when the chip hits the ground. Tyson Hanson won the event in 2009.

Logging crews in teams of six compete against each other in a relay. The events include choker setting, standing block chop, ax throw, double bucking and power saw bucking. Winners are named Best Crew and there is a perpetual trophy.

Contestants will set and secure three binders over a load of logs. The time stops when binders are secured and a flag is posted at the back of the load. Contestants will have only one chance to secure a winning time.

Responsibilities: Build relationships with key advertisers, helping them meet their goals and grow their business; direct retail sales and service functions for online, and core products; train, motivate, recruit and develop a creative and energetic sales force; mentor strong and experienced sales staffers in retail advertising; and work with the Vice President to develop and implement strategic goals. Qualifications: Minimum of three to five years of newspaper advertising experience, to include at least two years managerial experience is required. Bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree preferred. A successful track record of growing market revenue share with a proven record of developing and positioning strategic plans, which have resulted in increased sales and profitability. Must be a proven leader who is able to build a strong team and alliances. Must possess excellent communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation) with the ability to influence clients, peers and other appropriate audiences. Strong managerial skills (selecting and developing talent, coaching, and teambuilding) and the confidence to challenge the status quo in a professional manner are essential.
