Bargain hunters come from afar Islanders spend the most at the Island Thrift Shop By Mary L. Grady

Shoppers come from Duvall, Dupont and Des Moines to shop at the Mercer Island Thrift Shop, which has proved to be a gold mine for the City of Mercer Island. The store, which originally began in 1975 as a rummage sale to benefit Youth and Family Services, has thrived, bringing in an average profit of $500,000 each year since 2007. For the most recent 12 months ending in May, the store grossed $985,000. According to figures from the

city, the store’s profit margin has been at or above 59 percent each year, with the margin in 2011 at 68 percent. All funds are put toward paying for the City of Mercer Island’s Youth & Family Services department. The store relies largely on volunteers to operate the shop. The city employs one regular fulltime, exempt employee and two contract employees to manage the store. According to Suzanne Philen, the city’s coordinator for the shop, the store had 140 volunteers involved with the shop this past year. About 60 to 65 are who she calls her “core” volunteers. Volunteers include retired

Island residents as well as students from Island schools, and Bellevue College, earning public service credits or part time pay. Over the past four years, shoppers have been asked their ZIP code when they check out. The data indicate that shoppers come from places as far away as Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island, Lynnwood and Federal Way. And just which shoppers spend the most at the store that sells high-end castoffs from Island residents? Well, Islanders do. Islanders alone spent $620,000 at the store during the 12 months ending this past May — roughly $75 per household; a whopping one-third increase over the amount spent during the 12 months ending in May of 2008. Interest in the thrift store from surrounding communities has increased over time as well. Shoppers from Bellevue ZIP

Isl and Pre s cho ol Association, including early organization of the well-loved Circus Mcgurkus and the construction of the dragon at “Dragon Park.” Reed has been physically active and has set an example in the community of how to both enjoy sports and use them for community service for over 40 years. She was among the first members of the Mercer Island Country Club, and from the onset of its swim team was a regular volunteer for nearly two decades, as her children swam in the program. By 1973, Reed had become yet another “athletic” leader of the community by persisting against considerable “hazing” to become the first female firefighter in not only in the Island community but throughout King County as well. Reed was first a volunteer, then became a parttime paid firefighter for a decade. But she went beyond the fire station to teach others about fires and fire safety. Many Mercer Island children remember her as the lady firefighter who taught them CPR. And she learned from the best; she was an EMT taught by Islander physician Dr. Michael Copass. Reed’s volunteer career

grew to include the National Ski Patrol by 1976, and she was awarded National rank #6,465 for service at Ski Acres and Alpental, where she patrolled for over 30 years, leaving only three years ago when ordered by her doctors to stop hauling toboggans. She was often recruited by Mercer Island Boy and Girl Scout troops to assist in winter badge outings, and served as a troop leader for several years. Reed helped organize rowers into forming the Mercer Island Rowing Association, which is now part of the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department. After years of service to the community and that of the greater Seattle area, her life recently took a curve ball with a diagnosis of rapidly declining ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) this spring. Despite this struggle with ALS, and the loss of the ability to walk, Reed has been out biking around on a semi-recumbent bike peddled by her son-in-law, Grant Scull. She hopes to be on the slopes skiing this winter on a sitz-ski with Outdoors for All. Her community spirit and positive nature have inspired many people to get active and to give back to their communities.

During the ban, designated campgrounds may allow campfires in approved fire pits. DNR or the campground management may put additional restrictions in place, including a ban on campfires, depending on weather conditions.

The City of Mercer Island is hosting the fifth annual “National Night Out” on Tuesday, Aug. 7. The 29th annual event in the United States promotes crime prevention and preparedness. Around 70 cities in Washington participate in the event, and last year, 28 Mercer Island neighborhoods took part. National Night Out is an organized event for neighbors to come together to raise their crime prevention awareness and generate support for emergency preparedness. It’s also a chance for families and neighbors to meet and learn about the area. This year, the event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 7. To register a neighborhood, contact Mercer Island Police Officer Jennifer Franklin at (206) 275-7905 or email jennifer. franklin@mercergov.org. It takes 28 gallons of water, dozens of portions of vegetables and fruit, and hundreds of ounces of grain and protein to sustain a family of four for one week. Albertsons’ visual display shows the exact amounts of food and water that are necessary for survival over seven days. The purpose is to demonstrate what a family would need during an emergency such as an impassable bridge after an earthquake or a power outage. The display, up through July 15 in the southeast section of the store, is sponsored by Albertsons and the City of Mercer Island. Wiser and safer T

he sun has returned. After months of being cooped up inside because of the endless dark and soggy weather, we are suddenly released out into the wild to shed our clothes and sometimes our common sense. People who normally behave with great restraint head outdoors without a hat or sunscreen to jump into water that is still too cold or perhaps onto a boat with too many people on board with too much alcohol. On the beach, parents don’t worry enough about children who — despite having had swimming lessons — need close supervision. Yet, according to statistics from the King County Department of Health, the county and its communities have had great success in lowering the number of accidental child deaths here. The county’s safety record is one of the most successful in the nation. There are many reasons why. While overall, cars are much safer than ever before, the agency attributes the lower rate of deaths and injuries to the ubiquitous efforts to educate and enforce laws and safety guidelines. There are strict seatbelt and drunk driving laws, and now a prohibition on the use of cell phones. A great effort has been made to ensure parents and caregivers know how to buckle a child into a safety seat correctly and to encourage all to learn how to swim. Over the last several years, thousands of Boy and Girl Scouts, lifeguards, teachers, coaches and others know CPR and how to use a defibrillator. However, there is not a class for ordinary citizens to learn and understand basic safety requirements around electrical power — in their homes or on the street. The accident that occurred late last month in the Town Center, where an Island woman hit a key electrical vault outside The Mercer Apartments, is a case in point. The dozens of onlookers could have been in great danger. Firefighters held their breath as they shooed people away and blocked off the area. The damaged switches could have electrified the ground surrounding the accident scene. It is time to look at ways to teach everyone about electricity. A downed power line or broken utility vault may look benign, but it is anything but.

‘King County has had great success in lowering accidental deaths in children.’

To the editor Washington State Patrol is always on the scene Any realtor will tell you people looking to buy a home want good schools and safe neighborhoods. They also look for decent roads for when they head to the mountains or the beach during holiday weekends, such as Memorial Day or July Fourth. They want to know that if they are in an accident, someone will respond quickly to help them. While Washington needs more money to build new highways and repair existing roads, streets and interstates, one area in which our state excels is emergency response. In our state, if a vehicle is stalled in the middle of the road, there is a good chance that within minutes, a state trooper or incident response truck will be there to clear the roadway and protect drivers and passengers. If there is a collision on an interstate in Washington, you’ll see a sea of flashing red and blue lights from the state patrol, aid cars and other emergency vehicles. That’s not the case in other states. For example, if you have a fenderbender in neighboring Oregon, lots of luck. This actually happened recently. A family member was on her way to work on Interstate 5 in Portland. Just beyond where I-405 merges with I-5, a pickup truck hit her car from behind. Our family member and the pickup driver managed to move both vehicles to the shoulder of the interstate. I got to the accident a half hour later, and a Portland police officer pulled up just behind me.

Fortunately, neither driver appeared to be seriously injured. The police officer examined both cars, asked if our car was drivable (it wasn’t), checked for leaking fluids, asked if I had called a tow truck, lit a flare and left the scene. No police report, no accident report, nothing. After more than two hours, another Portland police officer stopped, asked what had happened and if a tow truck had been called. When I said yes, the dispatcher told me 45 minutes. He immediately called the towing service that the police department uses, and within 15 minutes our cars were off the interstate shoulder. The point is, citizens need and deserve a well-staffed professional state patrol and emergency response system. Oregon’s state police force is about half the size of Washington’s, even though Oregon is a larger state. There is a noticeable difference in state trooper presence between the two states. In Washington, the state patrol actively enforces speed limits,

aggressive driving, construction zone safety, seatbelt usage, and cell phone and texting violations. In our state, reckless or intoxicated drivers are caught and punished. That’s because over the years, Washington governors and legislators have made highway safety a priority and kept our state patrol strong. Since its modest beginnings with six motorcycle officers in 1921, the Washington State Patrol has become one of the premier law enforcement organizations in the nation with 1,600 investigators, support personnel, crime lab technicians and patrol officers. Each day, some 600 officers patrol our highways to help keep our roads and citizens safe. In contrast, budget cuts in Oregon have hurt that state’s police presence. While traffic accidents will happen, it is comforting to know that in Washington, the response is swift and public safety is the highest priority. Don Brunell Association of Washington Business

Booze heist suspect returns to scene after long night Twenty bottles of alcohol were stolen from the north QFC on Mercer Island at 12:30 a.m. on Monday, July 9. The theft amounted to $900. The suspects, two men ages 20 and 23 from Maple Valley and Seattle, fled in a vehicle and were immediately located by a police officer. They initially appeared cooperative, as if they would stop, but the vehicle sped away and struck a tree after accelerating from a stop sign in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way. Both suspects then fled on foot. A King County Sheriff’s K-9 unit tracked one suspect, the passenger, who was caught and arrested. The other suspect remained at large until 5:30 a.m., when he came back to the north QFC to use a phone. QFC employees and a nearby Kiro 7 crew called 911 when they saw the suspect, banged up and bloodied, in the parking lot. He was arrested outside of Baskin-Robbins. Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail.

Jonathan Joseph Borowski Jonathan Borowski, 31, of Snohomish, Washington, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Born December 29, 1980 in Seattle, Jonathan graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1999 and received his B.A. in Finance from Western Washington University in 2003. Jonathan worked in finance at Boeing since 2004. As a toddler, Jon always seemed to be holding a ball in his hand. This developed soon into a love of all sports to both play and watch: baseball, tennis, soccer, football, and golf. With his love of golf, he was often found at a local course and his friends recall one of his all-time favorite ventures to the US Open at Pebble Beach. He loved fishing and always had an eye for fine cars. We will remember him for his quiet, competitive nature that included him being a seemingly invincible Scrabble opponent. He is remembered by his closest friends through his many trips to destinations like Cabo, Chicago, and Vegas, more recently spending a week in the Caribbean with his long-time girlfriend, Lisa. A few days before his passing Jon and Lisa enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Leavenworth, WA. Jonathan is survived by his parents, Ronald and Deborah, both of Mercer Island, siblings Christopher and Lauren, girlfriend Lisa and their dog Enzo. A service was held at St Monica Catholic Church on Friday, July 6th. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association. Gun violence can be a result of untreated mental health issues By Police Chief Ed Holmes & MIYFS Director Cindy Goodwin

Over the past two months, there have been several incidents of random violence in communities across King County. As community leaders, parents and citizens, our hearts go out to the families and friends of these victims. This type of unprovoked violence is a tragedy for everyone involved. Part of the tragedy is the common thread linking these incidents — the untreated mental illness among the violent perpetrators involved. People who knew these individuals reported seeing indicators of mental illness prior to the violence, yet intervention did not happen or was not successful. These incidents remind us of the importance of ensuring access to mental health care and the need to overcome any stigma regarding getting help for psychological issues. Rooted both in genetics and environmental factors, mental illness is a reality in every culture and does not discriminate based upon gender, education, orientation, race, social or economic standing, or any other human characteristic. Although violence against oneself or others as a result of mental illness is rare, we have recently seen too many harsh reminders of the risks of ignoring or delaying seeking professional help for mental illnesses. On Mercer Island, there is a long-standing part-

help mentally ill residents access needed help and services. YFS counselors and new fire and police staff also meet to discuss available resources and procedures for making appropriate referrals for all types of mental health services. In addition to the strong working relationship with YFS, the Mercer Island Police Department has also recently sent its officers to Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. CIT training helps officers to better understand mental illnesses, and how best to respond to these types of situations. When officers are called to these situations, it is very

Rosalia “Rosy” M. Miyaya, a 38 year resident of Mercer Island, passed away at age 87 on Monday, July 2, 2012 at her home. She passed away peacefully in the presence of family. Rosalia was born in Rosalia, Washington on February 2, 1925 to Harry and Tamayo Kondo. She was the fourth of six children. The Kondo family moved to Priest River, Idaho in 1933 when Rosy was 8 years old. From that time on, Rosy made and maintained friendships that have lasted until today. Her high energy, kindness and sense of humor attracted people to her all of her life. In 1943 and 1944, Rosy attended the University of Idaho. Her college career was cut short by a need to help out at home in Priest River. Rosy had wanted to be a teacher, but was told by counselors that being of Japanese descent, her chances for employment would be very limited. She resumed her pursuit of a career by moving to Detroit, where her brother Mark was in dental school and then attended a dental assistant school in San Francisco after the war. She moved back to Detroit and met a handsome war vet, Clement K. Miyaya, who was attending Wayne State University. They married on October 27, 1951.Their first child, Mary Sue was born in Detroit a few years later. After Clem’s graduation, the family moved to Newport, Washington. Rosy was a busy homemaker and had her second daughter, Molly Kei.

helpful to be able to provide the individual and their families with referral resources. The good news is that mental illness is treatable, and counselors are trained to identify signs of potentially dangerous behavior and to arrange for appropriate care. But in order for people to receive treatment, they must first be brought to the attention of a mental health professional. Should you ever have a concern about an individual’s behavior or safety, we ask that you consult a YFS mental health professional or bring your concern up to the police. It

is not nosey, rude or wrong to express honest concern for anyone, especially if you are concerned for their wellbeing or that of someone else. If you see a behavior or hear something that d i s t re s s e s you, take a moment (in confidence) to run your concern by a professional. It might save a life. Let’s learn from the recent incidences of violence and reach out for help on behalf of someone displaying signs of mental illness. State gets waiver from ‘No Child Left Behind’ law The Mercer Island School District is one of just a handful that meets the law’s requirements By Reporter Staff

The U.S. Department of Education has granted Washington’s waiver request from Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) requirements aka ‘The No Child Left Behind Law.’ Washington is one of 26 states that have received waivers to date. “This decision is welcome news that gives our state the opportunity to implement bold reforms around standards and accountability,” said Washington state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn. “It allows state and local educators to decide how to best meet the individual needs of students they serve. Current law is written in a way that narrowly defines ‘success’ based mainly on standardized test scores.” The change will not affect the Mercer Island School District, said Superintendent Gary Plano. “We are one of the few districts in Washington state who has met all of the law’s requirements involving annual yearly progress,” he said. “But,” he continued, “it is a good thing for our state, as the great majority of state districts have not met those requirements.” The waiver will suspend the set-aside of funds that can only be used according to federal stipuations, rath-

er than how an individual district feels its best for a student or a school, Plano explained.

Applying for the waiver was a huge undertaking for the state superintendent’s office. Dorn emphasized that receiving the waiver was a team effort. “Gov. Chris Gregoire and Sen. Patty Murray deserve a lot of credit,” Dorn said. “Both were great public advocates for our application.” “I couldn’t be more pleased with today’s announcement,” Gov. Gregoire said. “We worked tremendously hard to earn this waiver — working closely with our partners at the local, state and the federal levels. “This waiver provides our school districts with the necessary flexibility to improve student learning based on the students’ and their community’s needs. And it recognizes the collaborative efforts the state undertook to reform teacher and principal evaluations, culminating in the passage of ESSB 5895 [the law] this session. Congratulations to all those who worked tirelessly to secure this waiver.” The waiver request rested on three principles: • Common Core State Standards (CCSS): The state office and education stakeholder groups worked together to develop an approach to implementing a CCSS for English language arts and math. • Accountability System and Index: While federal requirements limit tracking and reporting data from state assessments to reading and math, along with graduation rates and other indi-

cators for non-high schools, Washington has long been committed to evaluating school performance more broadly. The revised index will include both proficiency on multiple content areas and student growth data to provide a clearer and more equitable evaluation of school and district performance over time. • Teacher/Principal Evaluation: The new evaluation system holds educators accountable and provides a framework for meaningful professional growth. This system, built on the foundation of the new teacher and principal criteria and developed by Washington state educators, provides a direction that will empower teachers, principals and district leaders to meet the needs of students in Washington. School districts will see the results of the waiver immediately. Before the waiver was granted, districts had been required to set aside a statewide total of roughly $34 million in their budgets to pay for outside service providers with little accountability. Now that Washington has received the waiver, districts will be allowed to spend that money in ways they determine most appropriate. Some say that while helpful to districts, the waiver is only the first step to a more permanent solution. That opinion was echoed by U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who said: “This is great news for our schools. [The law] isn’t working for students across America, and the fact that so many states need waivers highlights that fact clearly,” she said. the 12 months ending in May of 2008. That amount jumped to $101,000 for the12 months ending this past May. Shoppers traveling to Mercer Island to shop from the cities of Renton and Kent spend $11,000 and $3,000 respectively for the 2007-2008 period. Those amounts increased to $24,000 and $12,000 for the 12 months ending this past May. A family from Marysville at the store recently told Philen that they make the long trip to Mercer Island to shop because, “this is the most terrific thrift store around.”

Islanders compete at Olympic trials

Two Mercer Island natives traveled to the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., in late June. Ethan Hallowell and Hannah Weiss both swam in the trial, though neither finished in the top two of their races to qualify for the Olympic team. Hallowell swam in the 50 freestyle event at the trials. He finished 145th overall with a 23.87 time in his heat. His time was 2.04 seconds off the top qualifying time of 21.83 by Anthony Ervin. Puget Sound native Nathan Adrian finished the race third overall in 21.68. Weiss, a student at Mercer Island High School, competed in three events. She finished 133rd overall in the women’s 100-meter

In the 100 backstroke race, Weiss’s top race, she finished 53rd in 1:03.43, just 3.89 behind the leader. In the 200 backstroke Weiss was 181 overall with a 2:23.40 time. “It was an incredible experience for Hannah being able to swim three separate individual events at that level of competition,” said Weiss father Karl. “Her team went through a modified taper

for this meet, since they are a relatively young group and her coach is focusing on the Nationals and Junior Nationals in August, where they have a better chance of placing.” He said it was exciting to be able to watch swimmers like Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte compete against each other, as well as Dana Vollmer setting a new American record in the 100meter butterfly race.

It seems intimidating for many people — the acronyms, the workouts, but it’s the people who change minds. CrossFit, a workout regime that has gained a large following over the last several years, was once used largely by police and fire departments to get and stay in shape. Now millions across the United States use the program to get into shape. Mercer Island CrossFit, located in the Stroum Jewish Community Center building, has been doing just that for the last two and a half years. JD Green, a trainer who now runs the fitness center at the SJCC, and friend Corey McGee had talked about gyms getting into the business. When McGee was laid off and Green got the job at the SJCC, the time to start a local CrossFit chapter never seemed more ideal. Since then, the Island location has grown to around 60 members, mostly through word of mouth, said McGee. “We’ve stayed pretty small,” said McGee. “Mostly it’s through word of mouth, in a very organic way.” The partnership between Mercer Island CrossFit and the SJCC allows the two to play off the other with referrals on either side. McGee said they purposely keep the classes small, about eight to 10 people per class, which allows them to tailor the workouts to the individual. “It’s universally variable,” said McGee. “We scaled it

It’s like recess for adults and will definitely increase fitness.” CrossFit gyms have popped up all over the area, and McGee said it’s becoming popular because it works, and it’s fun. “You suffer through the workout and all of a sudden you’re telling your friends they have to try it and you’re

addicted,” said McGee. Part of the appeal of CrossFit is the workout varies every day, set by the trainers for their group. Mercer Island CrossFit is open six days a week, taking Sundays off, with classes throughout the day. McGee said largely it’s Mercer Island residents looking to get or stay in shape, with some commuters

MIHS athletic director takes on new role By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

Mercer Island High School’s Craig Olson, who has served as the school’s athletic director for the last 18 years, announced on Monday that he will be stepping down from the position. Olson said he’ll continue to work at the school in an administrative position, but will not be returning to the athletic side. “Given the fact that the high school is gaining a new

principal, Vicki Puckett, and two new associate principals, Jamie Prescott and Jeff D’Ambrosio, I will be assuming more responsibility in the school regarding instructional leadership, overall school administration, and mentorship of the two associate principals,” he said. “There are so many aspects of athletic administration I will miss, particularly the relationships formed with coaches. I am very proud that we continue to offer the best education-

ally based high school athletic program in the state.” Prescott will be taking over the duties of athletic director at the school. “I have known Jamie as a student-athlete here at Mercer Island, hired her for an English teaching position, hired her as our head girls’ basketball coach, and served on the committee which hired her as an associate principal. She is exceptional and I leave an excellent program in highly capable hands,” said Olson.

Crossfit | FROM 14 who make a pit stop on their way across the bridges. Mercer Island CrossFit also offers a kids program, taught by McGee’s wife, Allison. “It’s the same program, but we’ve scaled the work down,” said Allison McGee. For teens, the idea is to teach the mechanics and moving safely, while for the younger kids it’s about making the exercise a game, with lots of movement. Allison McGee got hooked in much the same way as others at the gym, new workouts and seeing the improvement. “It’s constantly changing,” she said. “Even if the workout is one of my weaknesses that day, I know that eventually the workout will be something I’m stronger at. I like that you don’t compete; it’s more a fight with myself. The people here are very encouraging.” One thing McGee said that people ask a lot is if they need to do anything to prepare for CrossFit. “Don’t try to get in shape

for it,” he says. “Doing it gets you in shape and that’s the point.” One thing many people find when working out in a gym is that it’s them doing a workout, then going home. For those in CrossFit, it’s also about getting to know the people in class. “We get to know everyone in the group and you encourage each other,” said Allison McGee. “We promote doing things together and we’ll have socials outside of the gym,” said Corey McGee. On some occasions the two things — working out and socializing — combine into one event, like the Mercer Island CrossFit 5K Challenge held at the end of June. Over 75 athletes from 12 gyms came to take part in the event

that was part running, part CrossFit workout. “We don’t do a lot together, so it’s nice to see the other gyms,” said McGee. At Mercer Island CrossFit, it’s always free to give a class a try. McGee said on the Island their focus in the gym has been about general fitness because everyone needs to be able to do the same type of movements. If after the free trial someone decides to sign up, the first several classes are one-on-one with a trainer, teaching the movements and learning the CrossFit basics. After that there are multiple classes to choose from. “We’ve tailored it to the community,” said McGee. “In CrossFit your results and whether or not you come back depends on the attitude you have going into it.” The annual CrossFit games in California will take place this weekend, airing on ESPN3 from July 13 through July 15, as top qualifiers from around the United States compete.

15-minute Sea Bus that lands in Gas Town. The Sea Bus, Sky Train and city buses use the same Day Pass, so you can travel all over Vancouver with a $9 Day Pass or single transfers. Lonsdale Quay Hotel is next to a landing for Cates working tugs. We love to watch the tugs come in at the end of the day. We provisioned heavily at the market and caught the Horseshoe Bay ferry to Nanaimo, which was our headquarters while we sought out the elusive pinot noir. Since it was February, we did not need reservations but were warned that from late spring to early fall, reservations are mandatory. The Horseshoe Bay ferry crossing and the later Tsawwassen ferry crossing were $80 each way for our car, driver and one passenger. Reservations are an additional $20. In British Columbia, there are two kinds of liquor stores: one is run by the government, and the other is private. I visited two of each and was surprised at the lack of expertise in all four stores. In every store, I asked about Vancouver Island pinot noir. Three of the stores showed me wines from the Okanogan, which is our equivalent of Eastern Washington. In one store, the clerk dragged me over to the import red section, showing me Spanish, Argentinean,

Wineries on Vancouver Island offer not only great wines, but stellar views of the islands. Australian and Portuguese wines. When I asked again about Vancouver Island pinot noir, he said, “These are really good red wines.” To be fair, many wineries try to sell at the winery to make the most profit, so maybe there wasn’t enough production to sell in wine stores or restaurants. All the wines in restaurants were from other parts of Canada rather than Vancouver Island. Because I visited in late January, many wineries were not open. The round trip by

car from Nanaimo to Victoria was almost six hours. I did see winery directional signs along the way, but nothing was open. We did venture to the West Coast, to Tolfino, which was another eight-hour car trip across snowy mountain passes. Tolfino is in Pacific Rim National Park, and there is a charge of approximately $8 to go there from March through October. We have friends who snowbird to Arizona. There is a contingent of Canadians from Vancouver Island who also snowbird to Arizona.

They rent out their Vancouver Island homes to Canadians from eastern Canada, where the winters are harsh. When we drove around neighborhoods, we noticed that well over 50 percent of the homes boost rentable units — either duplexes or actual separate buildings. Whenever we travel, I have a specific packing list. Ever since we purchased our GPS, I haven’t been late for a winery visit. (Best $100 we ever spent!) I always make a list of the National Public

Another different item was poutine, which is Quebec in origin: French fries and cheese curds with gravy on top — nothing healthy for you. When I ordered a hamburger in a restaurant and asked if I could substitute poutine for French fries, the server recommended going to the Costco snack bar for “the best poutine on Vancouver Island.” So my quest for the elusive Vancouver Island pinot noir turns out to be more of a travel log. Vancouver Island is more like our own Puget Sound appellation, with fruit wines and German grapes such as madeline angevine, siegerrebe and gewürztraminer predominating. If we were to travel to Vancouver Island again, I would go later in the year and focus near the

town of Duncan to visit Averill Winery and Blue Grouse. Also, Church and State Winery is a destination winery that has won awards for their wines and for their winery architecture. I would also go to see Malahat Estate in Malahat, Rocky Creek in Cowichan Bay, and Starling Lane in Victoria. Very few Canadian wines are available in the United States. The border is not the only issue. For a long time, Canada had a huge tariff on United States wines to protect a wine industry that virtually did not exist. One man from Canada used to buy Napa Valley and other American wines and then have the wine store make a phony receipt so that he would pay a much lower duty as he crossed the border to go home. Many American

wineries have not forgotten the snub, and worked to block Canadian wine distribution. If I were doing a one-time Canadian wine visit, the Okanagan Valley is where I would concentrate. The Okanagan Valley in central British Columbia is the largest and oldest grape growing region. The south end of the valley, which receives fewer than six inches of rainfall yearly, is the only classified desert area in Canada. The north end of the valley, also arid, receives fewer than 16 inches of rainfall. Winesofcanada.com is a wonderful overview of Canadian wines. Stay tuned for my next wine column on Lake Chelan, where we found wineries open and wines to taste.

Radio (NPR) stations. In Hawaii it is HPR (Hawaiian Public Radio) and in Canada, it is BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Three of my best knives go into a special knife carrier. Using inferior knives when cooking makes me cranky. Lastly, we take a list of the nearest Costcos for gassing up and provisioning. While the Canadian Costco snack bars feature the ubiquitous $1.50 hot dog and drink combo, they offer other items. One was the Montreal steak sandwich, which is similar to a pastrami sandwich on a ciabatta roll and was delicious. And yes, it does come from Montreal. We bought several packages of the meat to bring home.

For Dental Implant Treatment, it’s a ClearChoice! ClearChoice team of specialists brings you a dental implant solution that fits your budget ... in just one day!* A LEADER IN DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT Virtually every adult will lose a tooth, and as we get older, more Americans will suffer with missing and failing teeth. These days, however, there are dental implant solutions that either didn’t exist in the past or which were difficult to access. But now, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are leading the way in innovative dental implant treatments. Dental Implants are a permanent solution for dental problems. And now your treatment, from our team of specialists, can often be accomplished in just one day *… and without the need for additional bone graft surgeries. In fact, dental implants can last a lifetime and have become the treatment of choice for replacement of missing and failing teeth. With more than 10,000 dental implant procedures performed, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers have become a leader in dental implant treatment delivery. TECHNOLOGY Every ClearChoice Dental Implant Center includes an on-site 3D CAT Scan. The 3D CAT Scan technology costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. This technology provides three-dimensional and cross-sectional views that allow ClearChoice doctors to examine the quality and density of the bone that will anchor the dental implants; select the correct type and size of implants; determine the precise placement of implants, and avoid the nerves and sinuses. Since every smile is custom designed, each ClearChoice Center has a specialized Dental Implant in-house lab to custom make your smile. They said they had specialists, a lab, and high tech equipment all at one location, but I had no idea that they could really do all of this in just one day!* — Actual ClearChoice patient

Our technology is paired with an expert professional team of doctor specialists enabling ClearChoice to empower so many patients around the country to change their lives. These qualified specialists include an oral surgeon who places implants, and a prosthodontist who designs your custom new smile. Each of the doctors has special expertise and can be trusted to deliver your high quality implant care. Dental Implants are a surgical procedure and the ClearChoice doctors have extensive experience in this area including administering anesthesia to provide comfort. Custom fabrication of the patient’s new smile and replacement teeth are accomplished by trained lab technicians in the on-site dental implant lab. Our local specialists are available for a FREE initial consultation or even second opinions. Why wait, call now! SATISFACTION & WARRANTY Whether for a missing single tooth, multiple teeth or a whole mouthful of missing or failing teeth, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers provide comprehensive implant treatment professionally and affordably in a fraction of the time it would take many other professionals. That’s why in an independent study of thousands of patients, ClearChoice patients would overwhelmingly recommend ClearChoice to others† and we warranty our work.

Rodgers · Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II · Book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse Directed by

Mimi Katano · Musical Direction by Julie Parsons

Share this beloved musical with your children and grandchildren! When the young nun Maria proves too high-spirited for religious life, she is dispatched from her convent to serve as the governess for the seven downhearted children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp. Though discipline is not within Maria’s nature, her kind heart and love of music captivates the children and inspires them to find their voices and sing. The return of laughter and music at home opens up the Captain’s heart as well and he marries the lovely governess. Despite a hopeful future, the fall of Austria to Nazis Germany threatens to rip the family apart. In the midst of wartime chaos, how will the Captain find the clarity of mind, like the lyrics of a simple folk song, to lead his family to safety? Best for ages 6+. Parental Advisory: Wartime themes.
