Work to begin soon on $2.65M levee project BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
Crews are expected to start work in mid-August on a $2.65 million project along the Green River to improve the Boeing Levee and provide better flood protection to the Kent Valley.
The Kent City Council awarded the levee work contract July 17 to Aberdeen-based Quigg Brothers, Inc. A state grant will cover $2 million of the cost. The city will pay for the rest through its storm water drainage utility fee fund or with funds from the King County
Flood Control District. “When we do this work we will get a portion of the valley removed from the floodplain by FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency), said Toby Hallock, city project engineer for [ more PROJECT page 4 ]

The scenario starts at a high school baseball game. A fan fell 20 feet from the stands while reaching for a fly ball. A group of 10 students in blue scrubs are responsible for aiding the patient until the ambulance arrives. “Ready, one, two, three, said Emma Kroll, a Kentwood High School student, as she guided the patient’s head while the group rolled him over onto his
back and prepared to examine him for cuts and broken bones. The scenario was part of MultiCare Health System’s ninth annual Nurse Camp July 16-20 at Tacoma General Hospital. The camp started in 2004 due to a shortage of people pursuing a career in the nursing field, Nurse Camp Director Liesl Santkuyl said. The camp began with 30 students the first year and has grown each year since. This year’s event had about 100 students in attendance from [ more CAMP page 5 ]

Metal thieves could make it tougher to fight fires in Kent. Thefts are up so far this year of metal parts on fire department connections near roadways used to supplement the required water for fire sprinklers inside businesses and apartment complexes as well as provide water to engines through standpipe systems. Thieves take the metal to a recycling facility for the cash. Eleven devices have been reported stolen so far this year, said Kyle Ohashi, spokesman for the Kent Fire Department Regional Fire Authority, in an email. Thirteen were taken in 2011 from businesses served by the Kent Fire Department.

pending if the contractor has any trouble tracking down steel sheets for a 600-foot long flood wall that along with an earthen berm will act as a secondary levee for the existing levee. A steel shortage has delayed some construction projects. Construction of a flood wall makes the Boeing Levee project different from other recent levee work along the river. Because the city received state grants to help construct the park five years ago, the state Recreation and Conservation Office played a role in what type of levee improvements could be made in order to restore the park. “We could not put a berm through the middle of the park, Hallock said. “So we will put a (5-foot high) wall on the backside of the property. Crews also will tear up the parking lot at the park for the project, but the parking lot will be replaced. “We will restore the parking lot and park once the levee work is complete, Hallock said. “The park will be back as it was except it will have a fancy wall in back. Engineering consultants hired by the city determined the existing levee has a steep bank that would not meet FEMA requirements. But the secondary levee set back at least 150 feet from the river would meet standards set by FEMA so the city can get the levee accredited by the agency.
“The sheet-pile wall will help keep water from seeping through, Hallock said. The small park, just south of South 200th Street, includes a wheelchair accessible sidewalk from the Green River Trail to a fishing platform along the bank. Other park amenities include a covered shelter, restrooms, picnic tables, a small open space area and parking. Crews will close the restrooms during levee construction, but portable toilets will be provided for trail users as the trail will remain open during the work. Another contractor recently removed giant sandbags from the trail near the Boeing Levee so construction could start. All of the sandbags along the river in Kent are expected to be removed by this fall as the extra protection is no longer needed after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers repaired a damaged embankment next to the Howard Hanson Dam. The city named the park after three men killed in a 2002 plane crash on an Alaskan fishing expedition organized by the Kent Parks Department through the Kent Senior Activity Center. Boeing donated the park land valued at $1.8 million in 2000 to the city. A state grant of $300,000 through the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program, helped fund the $610,000 park project.

Measure not the answer for parks, roads
Letters policy
I read, with interest, the Kent Reporter article (“City mulls property tax levy to pay for parks, streets’, July 29). May I ask: “Why are homeowners and businesses being considered to fund this? Does not everyone, including apartment dwellers and others, use these also? Does the City Council think that, just because we own homes, we are some kind of “City savings account?” Does the City Council forget that we work, and make ends meet daily, just like everyone else? As a homeowner, I already pay 33-percent tax to the Kent School district, where I have no children attending. Perhaps some of the approximately $1,200 paid could be funneled to this project?
The Kent Reporter welcomes letters to the editor on any subject. Letters must include a name, address and daytime phone number for verification purposes. Letters may be edited for length. Letters should be no more than 250 words in length. Submissions may be printed both in the paper and electronically. Deadline for letters to be considered for publication is 2 p.m. Tuesday. It’s ridiculous to just think that a homeowner (many who are losing homes at this time) would be a first-thought source of revenue. I ask that the City Council rethink this proposition and come up with a variety of ideas. And for heaven’s sake, get a citizen committee in-

Question of the week:
King County Proposition No. 1 appears on the Aug. 7 primary election ballot. The King County Children and Family Justice Center (CFJC), located on King County property at 12th and Alder Seattle, is the primary facility of King County Superior Court Juvenile Court. As citizens of King County, we should all take pride in our juvenile court being recognized as a national leader. The court has developed innovative reforms, providing programs and services designed to reclaim the lives of youth and families involved in the juvenile courts and child welfare systems that function out of this aging facility. Yet the facilities are dangerously outdated and failing our children, despite the fact that a growing population and economic difficulties mean more kids and families need care and protection. Brown water flows from drinking fountains, entire sections are unusable, and electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems are beyond repair. Experts say the building is in “severe disrepair,” must be replaced and is beyond its useful lifespan. Those of us here at Kent Youth and Family Services who deal with children, youth and families involved with the CFJC can attest that these facilities have been in a state of deterioration for probably some 20 years already. CFJC is where children and families go in times of crisis: child abuse and neglect; foster care transition; complex custody issues; juvenile offenses and truancy cases. Since the completion of the King County Juvenile Justice Operational Master Plan (JJOMP) in March 2000, King County, along with its youth and family partner community based organizations, like here at Kent Youth and Family Services, has made significant progress in reclaiming
gang violence, and what we’re doing to help address it.
Through collaboration from various law enforcement agencies and led by the Kent Police Department, five individuals have been arrested in connection with firing a weapon at the incident. Each has some gang involvement, and all come from the South King County area. They are all in custody on various charges. Three other persons also
volved. People have great ideas and could help come up with a workable solution. – Mary LaFond

Root causes Arguably, there are many factors that lead young men and women to join criminal gangs. Evidence indicates that there is one thing that connects most, if not all the contributing factors – limited opportunities. [ more GUEST OP page 7 ]

www.kentreporter.com [ GUEST OP from page 6 ] Studies have shown that young people would not choose to engage in criminal behavior if more opportunities were available to them. Young people who sense that they have a future and understand the door that they must pass through to get there do not join gangs. tensely together. The result has been the creation of a South King County Gang Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to reduce violence by pursuing and arresting the gang members. But enforcement is just one approach to reducing gang violence. It is a widespread belief within the law enforcement community and in local government that we can’t “arrest our way out of this.” It takes a real commitment to prevention, intervention, and suppression efforts working along
with appropriate and clear enforcement. Also in response to the shootings, the King County Council funded targeted strategies aimed at gang prevention and intervention. One of the projects receiving funding is the South County Gang Project that works with gang involved youth helping them earn their high school diploma or GED and find jobs. This is a great example of a program that expands options for young people, works with families to create bet-

Officers arrest man near library for indecent exposure BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com
Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of indecent exposure after he allegedly pulled down his shorts and showed his genitals to passing vehicles near the downtown Kent Library and Town Square Plaza. The incident occurred at about 5:53 p.m. July 17 near the Kent Library, 212 Second Ave. N., according to the police report. A woman called 911 to report a man pulling his pants down and exposing himself as she drove past Town Square Plaza. An officer later tracked down the man at the park’s restroom. Police initially stopped another man outside the restroom, but determined he was not the man they were looking for. The man denied exposing himself but told officers he wears his shorts low and sometimes they drop down. When police told the man that witnesses saw him pulling down his pants, he responded, “That’s

Officers arrested two men on a variety of charges after they reportedly fought with each other and police at about 12:11 a.m. July 15 in the parking lot outside of the Bad Monkey Bar and Grill, 623 Central Ave. S. Police arrested one man for investigation of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstructing and
fourth-degree assault, according to the police report. They arrested a second man for investigation of disorderly conduct, obstructing and resisting arrest. A bar employee told police he wanted the men off the property because one of the men had threatened the disc jockey at the bar. Officers initially talked to the men in the parking lot and left when it appeared the men also would be leaving. But a few minutes later officers heard screaming coming from the bar’s parking lot and returned to find two men fighting each other. The one man reportedly had tried to get the other man, who he knew, to leave the property when the fight broke out. Officers yelled at the men to stop and then two of the officers entered the fight when the men kept punching each other. At one point, the two men and three officers were on the ground fighting between parked vehicles. Eventually, police were handcuffed both men. An officer fired his Taser to stop one of the men.

Police arrested a man and a woman for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle after they crashed a car into a bus shelter at about 8:38 a.m. July 17 in the 24000 block of Pacific Highway South. The man and woman ran from the car after the single-vehicle accident, according to the police report. Witnesses saw the crash and watched the two run into the nearby Lowe’s hardware store. Police found the man and the woman inside the store. Police determined that the 1993 Honda Accord had been stolen in Tacoma. The license plates had been changed, but officers used the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the dashboard to track down the car’s owner. The man told officers he swerved to avoid another vehicle changing lanes and that’s how he hit the shelter. Metro officials estimated damage at $40,000 to the shelter and a sign.
The man told police that he had to use pliers to start the car’s ignition.
Attempted robbery Officers arrested a man for investigation of attempted robbery after he allegedly tried to rob the Little Caesars Pizza at about 7:10 p.m. July 18 at 20720 Pacific Highway S. A store employee called 911 to report a man trying to rob the store, according to the police report. Employees told officers that the man entered the store and demanded money or something bad would happen to them. He pushed an employee away from the cash register but was unable to open the register. The man then fled on foot. An officer found the man in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex. The man said he needed money for his family. Police saw the man toss a plastic vodka bottle to the ground. Target, a national sponsor of National Night Out, will also be represented. Local events run between 5-9 p.m. To register your National Night Out event, visit www. kentnno.com.

Jeff Heiss Painting began in 1994 as Heiss Enterprises. Originally a small handy-man service, the company grew into a remodeling contractor and in the early 2000’s began focusing on painting services exclusively. Today, Jeff and his team specialize in painting colors. Jeff’s philosophy is that if you do great work and treat people courteously, they’ll be happy and want to tell people they know. Since his business is built primarily by referrals, it’s a practice he’s keeping.
Paolo’s started as a dream of Paul’s when he was 8 years old. He knew he wanted to be a chef. Fortunately, he had a training program available at this young age--his Italian mother to cook with at home and his father to show him the restaurant business. Paul’s desire to become a chef and restaurant owner never wavered. Paul’s love of cooking shows in each dish he creates. Most of Paul’s hours are joyfully spent in the kitchen preparing fresh, mouth-watering meals for his guests. He enjoys the open kitchen because he can chat with guests as he works. He never tires of hearing “It smells so good in here! Paul feels honored each time a guest walks through the door. The staff enjoys meeting and getting to know the many wonderful customers and takes pride in serving them. Paul thanks each of you for choosing to dine at Paolo’s so often over the years.
Random tidbits: Jeff has a picture taken on top of Mt. Rainier with an (empty) Rainier bottle; has traveled to Africa; was a gymnast in high school and still does a pretty decent handstand.

A long-time resident of Kent, Jeff attended Panther Lake Elementary, Kent Junior High and Kent Meridian; later graduating from Highline Community College and the University of Washington. His three children are, or will be, Kentridge grads - and he’s ok with that.

And, regrettably, many more of our youth are lost to recidivism. They return to “the system, eventually moving onto a lifetime of repeated criminal justice involvement as adults directly due to the woeful CFJC facility conditions. It ends with lost lives and far greater expenditure of all of our tax revenues over the long term, as well as threatening the safety of our communities. Here in South King County we must recognize these children and youth and their families are “our families. King County juvenile court statistics record two-thirds – 66 percent – of all youth involved in services at CFJC reside in South King County. These projects involve reclaiming youth facing adjudication (conviction) for offenses resulting from abuse/dependence on alcohol and other drugs. We provide a community linkage/partnership with King County working with these youth and their families in a number of the therapeutic and youth development services that succeed in reclaiming the lives of our Kent youth. Our staff has been in and out of the King County Youth Services Center on a daily basis for decades now. Thus, KYFS staff can attest to the problems with the current facility as identified. The cost to the median homeowner in King County would be less than $25 per year to replace this aging facility portions of which are some 60 years old. It is my hope residents of Kent will agree with supporting our children, youth and families with a facility that supports their successful return to a life of positively contributing to our community during a time when many of them are facing their greatest family crises. [ FORECLOSURE from page 1 ] struggling borrowers with counselors such as those at Solid Ground. Current events provide no shortage of clients for the non-profit. According to Realtytrac, a business that monitors and markets foreclosed properties, 1 in 1,103 homes in King County received a foreclosure notice in June. Bailey received helped from Solid Ground during her crisis. The single mom found herself out of a job in 2007 when the bank she worked for merged with another. Her job search was severely complicated by the crumbling economy and bills started to pile up. Bailey missed two mortgage payments on her Kent home. “It was a nightmare, Bailey said. “I was stressed out and worried about having

a foreclosure notice on my door for the whole neighborhood to see. Finally working at a new job, Bailey found herself bogged down by the paperwork required to repeatedly apply for loan modifications. She was turned down six times. Meanwhile her mailbox, email and voicemail burst with offers of help for a fee. Some scammers, one presenting a dozen roses, knocked on her door as late as 9 p.m. “I was scared, she said. “People were offering to buy my home and I was just offended and embarrassed.
Help is out there Bailey ultimately received a loan modification, shrinking her payment by nearly $1,000 per month. She worries that borrowers in similar situations might give up for not knowing where to find help and never receive the loan modifications that could save their homes. “They need to know there is help out there, she said. McKenna today repeated his warning that borrowers should stay away from those who offer potential loan modifications for an upfront fee, adding that such pitches come in email, phone calls and letters. “The bottom line is not to
accept any offer from someone who wants you to pay for help obtaining a lower mortgage payment, said McKenna. “Call the homeownership hotline instead, at 1-877-894-HOME. McKenna used funds from settlements with mortgage lenders – $600,000 from a settlement with Countrywide/Bank of America and $550,000 from the Wachovia Wells Fargo settlement – to help fund the hotline, which connects borrowers with non-profit counselors approved by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He says stories like those told by Bailey are why his office spends so much time righting wrongs in the mortgage-lending industry. That work recently involved helping lead negotiations that resulted in a $25 billion settlement with the five biggest lenders. McKenna noted that discussions are ongoing about how a portion – about $45 million – of Washington state’s proceeds from the settlement might help support programs such as those that provide homeowner counseling. He also emphasized another important development involving the settlement, which are letters from lenders that detail huge benefits.
The recent National Mortgage Servicing Settlement requires servicers to notify eligible borrowers of the programs that may be available to them. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase Mortgage, CitiMortgage, GMAC and their affiliates have been and will continue sending out thousands of letters to eligible borrowers explaining the available programs. Borrowers are beginning to receive the letters detailing potential principal reductions or loan modifications. However, some of the banks report borrowers aren’t responding promptly. “You must open your letter and respond in order to benefit from the settlement McKenna said. “If you question whether the letter you’ve received is genuine, you can do several things: you can call your lender directly to confirm whether you are eligible. You can contact a certified housing counselor or you can call the Attorney General’s Office for assistance. We hope people don’t miss their opportunity to take advantage of the assistance we fought to provide. McKenna’s office has posted step-by-step instructions, including a how-to video, for borrowers facing potential foreclosure on their website www.atg. wa.gov/foreclosure.aspx.
HIGH CREDIT RATINGS will help King County lower the cost of borrowing money to fund critical life safety and infrastructure improvements at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The county on Monday sold $94.6 million in bonds to refinance outstanding general obligation (GO) bonds involving Harborview Medical Center, according to a county media release. The bonds were originally issued in 2004 to fund seismic improvements at the facility. The county’s outstanding “AAA credit rating led to very favorable bids for the bonds. Ten investment banks and securities firms entered bids, with the winning bid coming from J.P. Morgan Securities. J.P. Morgan offered an interest rate of just 1.7 percent. With this very low interest rate, the county expects to save a total of $16.4 million between now and 2023, the final maturity date of the bonds. The savings in debt service payments will be passed on to taxpayers in the form of lower levy amounts for these voterapproved bonds.

Derrick Daigre is learning to work – or run – his way back up to the top of the podium. The 2011 Kent-Meridian graduate and University of Washington freshman, finished his first collegiate track meet with a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters during the preliminaries at the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis with a time of one minute, 52.32 seconds. However, he missed the qualifying time by a razor-thin margin of .05 second. After placing second at last year’s championships and running a personal-best 1:50.05, Daigre said it was hard for him after realizing how close he had been. “I was disappointed, especially since we really had a long traveling day,” he said. “It took us two days to get there because of layovers, but we all knew we had a job to get done. When we made it to the USA last year, I placed top two in the finals, (so) this time to get that far and then come up a little short, it sucks. “You know you can do it, you’ve been there before,” he said. “It was 90 degrees when we were running. You don’t think about that when you’re running. You just want to run.” During his high school track career, Daigre ran up a tally of medals, including the 4A state title in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.57 and second in the 400 meters in 2009 as a sophomore
Derrick Daigre, in Husky purple, battles the pack in an 800-meter race at the Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Daigre, a Kent-Meridian product, was ninth in the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships in 1:52.32 seconds. COURTESY PHOTO at 49.04. He also ran on the cross country team, placing 21st at the 2010 state championship. Although he said ninth place wasn’t the best note to end the season on, he said often an athlete’s first year training on a collegiate level is learning how to adapt to the collegiate style and method of training, as well as the environment.
‘Want to be fast’ “I came (to college) with the approach that I really want to be fast,” he said. “It’ll come, it’ll come, just do what you normally do. But things change. … In high school, everything is easy because you just learn how to be yourself and you get that reward,” he said. “But in
college you have to work so much harder and the payback isn’t as grand because you don’t get those stats, those wins. “But I think now that, now to win and succeed, it means that much more, because you barely get it,” he said. “You kind of take those things for granted. But in college you’ve got to do everything.” At this level, Daigre added, the expectations are different. “The coaches weren’t harder. They make you kind of run as a man,” he said. “You’ve got to do things on your own. Coaches aren’t here to baby sit you. They’re only there when you’ve got a workout or it’s time to go (race). But you’re on your own a lot. You do things for yourself. Everything is just more professional. It’s all
expected out of you to do on your own.” While he can’t compete at the U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships next year, which has a cut off age of 19, Daigre said he plans to compete at other similar events and hopefully bring his times back down. “Next year I’m going to have more focus … and be more prepared,” he said. “The first year your coach is trying to figure out what type you are. Are you speed? Are you strength? The first year we’re really trying to know each other. What happens is you don’t run too fast, but you’re training in a different way so it’s more positive. I did more volume than I’m used to. [ more DAIGRE page 20 ]

ENOUGH CASH TO GO AROUND? One issue that must be addressed by the executor of a will is that there are sufficient liquid assets (cash or assets that can be quickly converted to cash) to pay the bills of the deceased’s estate. If there are not enough funds to cover the debts, assets must be sold, which should be done prior to distributing property to beneficiaries. If there are not enough assets to pay all of the debts, state law will dictate the priority with which outstanding debts must be paid. As a general matter, funeral expenses and fees are to be paid in full before other creditors are paid. If you have any questions about the duties of an executor or about writing or executing a will, then you should call 425-227-8700. I have 39 years of experience dealing with all aspects of estate planning, wills, and probate. I can provide the professional guidance you need as you move through these complex decisions. [ DAIGRE from page 19 ] “The next year, since my coach knows the runner I am, he’ll adjust things and add more speed and less strength, but still try to maintain what we did last year. That’s what I’m happy about, moving up the ranks. Competing with the cream of the crop runners also is a new experience Daigre said he encountered. “You go from the being that number one guy, winning races here and there all the time, and now you’re in college and back at the bottom again, he said.

As Primary ballots arrive in the mail, voters will have plenty of statewide races to narrow the list of candidates, but they won’t determine much in the Kent area as far as choosing finalists to the state Legislature. No race for the Legislature in the Kent area on the Aug. 7 ballot has more than two candidates, so everyone on the ballot will advance to the Nov. 6 General Election. Kent is served by Districts 33 and 47 in the Legislature. The two candidates with the most votes in each race advance to the General Election. Voters will decide the outcome on King County Proposition No. 1, the Children and Family Services Center Capital Levy to rebuild the Youth Services Center in Seattle. The King County Council sent the levy to voters
seeking $210 million over nine years to replace what county officials call outdated and failing facilities. The levy is seven cents per $1,000 assessed valuation, which would cost the owner of a $350,000 home about $25 per year. Kent voters also will help decide the two finalists in two Congressional races as Rep. Adam Smith, DTacoma, seeks another term in District 9 and Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Auburn, seeks reelection in District 8. Smith has four challengers while Reichert has five. In a statewide race for Congress, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., faces seven challengers. Voters have many state government positions to narrow to two finalists with their vote including governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, treasurer, auditor, attorney general, commissioner of public lands, superintendent of

Good time to revive your lawn, yard some mulching magic, weeding wisdom and pruning power into your front yard mini-makeover this week. Top 5 Mistakes - What not to display in the front yard landscape:
THE GARDENER
1. Rusty, non-functional autos, boats or heavy equipment. OK, an old wooden boat filled with flowers or a rusty tractor displayed as part of a country garden do have some charm. But we’re not talking garden accents here. Parking dysfunctional vehicles on the front lawn for months at a time is not OK – and in many communities it is against the law. 2. Appliances, broken lawnmowers. Did you know a simple phone call to a metal recycling company can take care of those mowers and metal scraps? Sometimes you can even get paid to get rid of unwanted metal parts. Many communities will now help you recycle those old television sets that often end up stacked in the garage – so you can fit the lawnmower and even your car into the garage instead.

3. Old toilets Yes, I do know these plebes are sometimes used as planters. But this type of planter is better off in the back yard than the front.
Marianne Binetti
The end of July is when your lawn and landscaping may be in a mid-summer slump. Renew and refresh by pinching back faded blooms, shearing overgrown hedges and thinning out the obviously bare and dead branches of trees and shrubs that were winter damaged. If you have a dead tree or tall stump in the landscape, consider planting a clematis or other vine at the base of the eyesore and let it become a support system for a star player. Front yard fix-ups are all the rage for curb appeal and getting top dollar for new and old homes on the market. Here’s the results from an unscientific poll about what makes a home look unkempt. If you see your landscape here, better get busy on the clean up. Not only will real estate values go up but the simple act of adding potted flowers and keeping the lawn mowed has been proven to deter crime in neighborhoods. The best part about front yard fix-ups is that they are contagious. Be the change you seek in your neighborhood and put
4. Piles of beauty bark, topsoil or gravel that have become mountains of weeds. I am guilty of ordering too much mulch, letting it sit too long in a pile and then harvesting a crop of weeds. Even the most highly-composted mulch will sprout weeds over time as wind blown weeds seeds blow in and put down roots. The trick is to get your neighbors to split the cost of a delivery of mulch so you can all be wheel barrowing and spreading mulch at the same time – and get the mountain of mulch to disappear within one week. 5. Overgrown shrubs, knee high lawns or piles of debris. Here’s some good news. If there is an empty house in your neighborhood awaiting foreclosure and the lawn needs mowing or the shrubs need pruning you can make a call to your local mayor’s office and report the eyesore as a public nuisance. There are health codes to protect neighborhoods from rodents and nothing attracts
rats like tall grass and piles of debris. Your local civic leaders can track down the owners of empty or bank owned houses and request routine maintenance. Let the banks give a bale out to our neighborhoods to keep property values from going down. If a neighbor has let the yard go due to health or other personal hardships they may need a helping hand from those that live nearby rather than a government intervention. Often the simple solution is to knock on the door and offer to mow the front lawn. Our forbearers helped to raise barns and bring in the crops when a neighbor was in need. If you are blessed with good health, offering to mow a neighbor’s lawn is part of living in a community. 3 things to add instant curb appeal to your home: 1. Mow, then edge the front lawn. Providing a barrier between the lawn and the beds is like framing a picture. It just gives the whole place a more finished look. 2. Add containers filled with flowers. Two pots on either side of the front door filled with red gera-
niums or a couple of hanging baskets on the front porch is all it takes to create a warm welcome. If you’re “maintenance challenged” and can never remember to feed and water blooming plants then plant drought resistant yucca in a sunny yard or use shade-tolerant hostas on a shaded front porch. Both the yucca and the hosta are perennial which means they will return year after year and thrive in the same pot for years. 3. Remove the overgrown monsters. Your plants are not children – you don’t have to house them once they grow too big and are no longer cute. There are no plant police to stop you from cutting back the rhodie that blocks all the light from the living room or the giant junipers that block the entrance to your front door. For security reasons, a wellpruned landscape, with good night lighting makes the entire neighborhood a better place to live. For Dental Implant Treatment, it’s a ClearChoice! ClearChoice team of specialists brings you a dental implant solution that ďŹ ts your budget ... in just one day!* A LEADER IN DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT Virtually every adult will lose a tooth, and as we get older, more Americans will suffer with missing and failing teeth. These days, however, there are dental implant solutions that either didn’t exist in the past or which were difďŹ cult to access. But now, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are leading the way in innovative dental implant treatments. Dental Implants are a permanent solution for dental problems. And now your treatment, from our team of specialists, can often be accomplished in just one day *‌ and without the need for additional bone graft surgeries. In fact, dental implants can last a lifetime and have become the treatment of choice for replacement of missing and failing teeth. With more than 10,000 dental implant procedures performed, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers have become a leader in dental implant treatment delivery. TECHNOLOGY Every ClearChoice Dental Implant Center includes an on-site 3D CAT Scan. The 3D CAT Scan technology costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. This technology provides three-dimensional and cross-sectional views that allow ClearChoice doctors to examine the quality and density of the bone that will anchor the dental implants; select the correct type and size of implants; determine the precise placement of implants, and avoid the nerves and sinuses. Since every smile is custom designed, each ClearChoice Center has a specialized Dental Implant in-house lab to custom make your smile. They said they had specialists, a lab, and high tech equipment all at one location, but I had no idea that they could really do all of this in just one day!* — Actual ClearChoice patient
