Candidates state their case for office Rebuilding trust and the economy key issues at 1st Congressional debate Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
On Wednesday afternoon, six of the seven candidates in the 1st Congressional District race faced off in a debate at the Microsoft, Corp. campus in Redmond. Democrats Darcy Burner, Suzan DelBene, Steve Hobbs, Darshan Rauniyar and Laura Ruderman and Republican John Koster participated in the debate, which was presented by Seattle City Club and Microsoft. The race’s seventh candidate is Independent and Red-
mond resident Larry Ishmael, who did not attend the debate. The debate was moderated by Joni Balter, an editorial writer from the Seattle Times, who questioned the candidates on various topics including the issue they are most concerned about and would want to address if elected. Burner said she wants to bring democracy back to the people. “If there is one thing that I would like to be identified with, it’s this idea that we need to restore government of, by and for the people — not government of, bought and paid for by large corporations and multimillionaires,” she said. DelBene said she wants to stand up for the middle class and get the economy moving again. She
touched on her family’s experience with unemployment, explaining how they moved around the country after her father lost his job and how her parents moved in with her after she finished college because they didn’t have another place to go. DelBene also stressed the importance of education and how that led to a career where she could take care of her family. “That’s what everyone wants and that’s what everyone’s struggling for right now,” she said. “And I’m not sure if I were growing up now I could tell that same story.” Hobbs said he wants to bring civility back into politics because the country and Congress are broken. “Everyone’s trying to one-up one another,” he said. “We’re in a crisis
where we need to have someone who can bring people together … I’ve done it in Olympia, where I brought Republicans and Democrats together to create a bipartisan budget that protects the most vulnerable, protects education. I want to bring that to the other Washington.” Koster, the lone Republican in the debate and the race, said he believes the solutions to the nation’s issues are found in people, not in bigger government programs. “(If) we set free, the creative juices of the American people and allow them to innovate and allow them to create and allow them to go out and create businesses and provide goods and services for [ more CANDIDATES page 2 ]
The relocation of retail operation services from the closing post office in downtown Redmond has taken the Southeast Redmond post office off a national list of post offices that could potentially close next year. Ernie Swanson, a spokesperson for the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) Seattle district, said a couple other things have factored into this decision. First, he said the location at 7241 185th Ave. N.E. in Redmond will now be the only post office in town now that retail operation services will be moved there and begin at their new location on Monday. Second, the Southeast Redmond location is a delivery distribution center where Eastside-bound mail coming in from Seattle is sorted before it is distributed throughout northeast King County. Swanson said if the Southeast Redmond location were to close, this mail would be sorted in Seattle. It made sense to keep operations on the Eastside since they would be serving cities east of Lake Washington, he said. [ more USPS page 4 ]

He said as an immigrant, he has been able to live the American dream, but that dream is fading away for many hardworking families because Congress has failed. “We, as citizens, really need to stand up and say, ‘Enough is enough,’” he said. “We cannot continue to elect same politicians again and again and expect a different result.” Ruderman stressed the importance of rebuilding the economy and said she would like her role in that to be continuing to focus on expanding access to affordable, high-quality health care. need to build on that. “Lack of access to health insurance is driving middle class families into bankruptcy,” Ruderman said. “And that is just wrong.” The debate also had a lightning round during which Balter asked yes or no questions about whether they supported certain issues including same-sex marriage, legalizing marijuana, the Dream Act and increasing the age for Social Security. Candidates also had the option to “waffle” if they weren’t sure where they stood on an issue. “We enjoy the entertainment, the music and we usually eat lunch here on Saturday,” said Matthew Crismalc of Redmond. “This is just a great place for kids to get out and enjoy some outside activities.” This year, prizes were awarded for best booth display. Johnson’s Wildflour Gluten-Free Bakery took second place with her tepee hut. Pete Godwin of Forest Green Enterprises, which specializes in concrete art, took first. Godwin, the Saturday Market board president, was the only man wearing a grass skirt, according to Package. The market is located on the western edge of Redmond Town Center and is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Oct. 27. The market’s next themed day – Aug. 4 — will focus on the Zucchini Races. Children will have the opportunity to build cars out of fresh veggies and race them down a track. egardless of weather, when Hawaiian Day comes around each year, Redmond starts feeling like summer. Last Saturday, the Redmond Saturday Market celebrated the tropical theme with fresh foods and hula dancers. True to the season, the stands were bursting with vibrant colors and flowers. Sharon Goodman, vendor of a winery booth, compared the Saturday market to older outdoor fairs and festivals. “Back in the ‘60s this (would have been like) Woodstock,” she said. “This is actually my first year decorating, so I just want to get into the spirit of the Hawaiian Day this time.” Local baker Rebecca Johnson set up her booth with grass skirts and rows of lei. The outcome was a structure similar to a tepee. “I think about Hawaii a lot during the winter — it gets me through these dark, rainy days,” said Johnson. “So once a year I get pretty excited when Hawaiian theme happens.” She also mixed banana, coconut and pineapple into her baked goods to further fit the occasion. “It’s like taking traditional recipes and giving them a tropic twist,” Johnson said. The idea for the Hawaiian theme came from Jim Hoagland, a previous market president, and Martha Tyler, a previous market manager. It was a direct result of their love for Hawaiian music and culture
and it ended up becoming a tradition, according to Redmond Saturday Market director Nicole Package. “Many vendors say it is their favorite day,” Package said. “All the great energy, music and participation bring a general warm feeling for everyone.” Besides the booth makeovers, there was music to entertain the shoppers. Performers from the Melelani Hula Studio danced to island music dressed in hula skirts. Later, the Elias Ka’uhane Band joined the group with Hawaiian songs accompanied by ukuleles. “It is the fifth year we’ve done this,” said Laura Melelani Bergstrom, instructor of the hula studio. “It is open air, a community event — the market and all is fabulous. Just having the atmosphere and ambiance is a lot like being in Hawaii.” The pace of the audience was also remarkable. Some busily strode through the market, while others moseyed by the booths for food samples. Jams, fruits and organic vegetables were favorites. Many however, took time to enjoy the performance on the lawn with a family picnic.

NO MORE CLOSURES
While it is good news that the Southeast Redmond location will not be closing, David Yao, vice president of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) for the greater Seattle area, said he thinks the USPS should still find a downtown Redmond retail location. “It makes all the sense in the world,” he said about having a post office downtown.
The Southeast Redmond postal station is not the only location that has been taken off the chopping block. Swanson said the USPS initially had a list of about 3,700 post offices nationwide that could potentially close in February 2013, but this changed in May. He said instead of closing locations, the USPS submitted a proposal to the U.S. Postal Regulatory Commission that would reduce hours of operations at select post office
locations from eight hours to two, four or six hours. He said in Washington, this change would only affect post offices in more rural areas on the eastern half of the state. “None of this applies to any offices on the Eastside,” Swanson said. The proposal was submitted in May and the commission has 90 days — till the end of August — to come up with a recommendation. “If we decide to pursue this, we will probably begin the process sometime in
September,” he said about the changing hours. Yao is wary of the proposal because even though the postal service is proposing no closures, people can change their minds and he said the USPS has changed their minds the past.
A $5.5 BILLION BILL
The potential post office closures and hours changes was prompted by the 2006 Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which requires the USPS to pay
the federal government an annual fee of $5.5 billion to “pre-fund” future retiree benefits through the year 2081. Swanson said he does not know of any other government agency or private business that has been required to do this, at least at this level. He said 2006 was the last time the USPS had seen an increase in mail volume. They went from 214 billion pieces — letters, parcels and more — to 167 billion pieces in 2011. With revenue already on the decline, Swanson said

Swanson said it would be possible for the postal service to make their payments if they received assistance from Congress. Yao agreed, saying the USPS definitely needs retooling to keep up with the times, but they need money to do so. “The business has changed but there’s still a basic need for the postal service,” he said. Yao said the 2006 act was a way for the federal government to pad the country’s budget and make the deficit look smaller. He added that there are also lawmakers who would like to see the privatization of the USPS and these “obstructionists” are preventing any work from being done. “So far, Congress has been dragging their feet in this,” Yao said, pointing out that the Second Continental Congress established the USPS and now the current Congress is killing it with its inaction.

UNSUNG HEROS Many audience members risked — and sacrificed — their lives during the catastrophic Colorado shooting

veryone is talking about the Colorado man who killed 12 people and injured 58 others at a theater showing of the new Batman movie last week. But that’s not the real story. The focus should be on the heroes in the audience who, in several cases, protected people near them and in doing so sacrificed their own lives. Matthew McQuinn gave up his life to shield his girlfriend from the attack. Jonathan Blunk, 26, a father of two, also died while saving his girlfriend. The girlfriends of McQuinn and Blunk said neither man hesitated to protect them. People often wonder what they would do if faced with such a choice. Fortunately, that rarely happens. But that night in a Colorado movie theater, hundreds of people had to make a life-or-death decision. Some dove under seats and then helped people crawl to safety during the massacre. Others worked to lead people to exits and safety. The criminal case against the shooter, James Holmes, likely will go on for several years. But let’s never forget the day it happened – and the individuals who gave so much so that others could live.

arlier this week, Microsoft and Seattle CityClub teamed up to host the latest in a series of candidate forums in the crowded race for the 1st Congressional District. However, unlike most of the forums and debates that have been held to date – where only Democratic candidates have shared the stage – this event featured Republican John Koster, who is expected to be one of the top-two vote getters Aug. 7. As a consequence, Koster ended up being a scene-stealer (to use showbiz parlance) during the hourlong debate at the Microsoft Conference Center. For instance, fifteen minutes in, moderator Joni Balter asked Koster: “John, this is a true swing district, and you’re the only Republican. In 2010, you self-identified as a tea partier... How are you going to connect with independents whose views aren’t in line with yours?” Koster began his reply with a very curious statement. “I don’t know if I self identify with the Tea Party or the press did that for me,” he said, adding that it’s his belief that people throughout the district share the same concerns and have the same priorities (for instance, limited government). Has Koster forgotten his 2010
campaign? There’s a very good reason why the press has described him as a Tea Party candidate: that’s who he campaigned with — and for — two years ago. A 2010 YouTube video posted by “Koster for Congress” shows him speaking in 2010 at a Tea Party rally in Everett - which was attended by several hundred people – espousing Tea Party principles. The video is titled, “John Koster speaks on behalf of the Tea Party Patriots.” That speech was given only a few weeks after Koster sent a letter to the members of TeaParty.org appealing for their support. Later, on the campaign trail that year – June 3, 2010, to be precise – Koster declared, “The Tea Party movement is one of the most exciting things that’s happened to this country for a long time.” But on Wednesday, at Microsoft, Koster seemed to be doing his best not to sound or look like a Tea Party candidate. He surprised many in the audience during two lightning round style questions, where candidates respond to issue questions by holding up flash cards. When the candidates were asked if they agreed with the Supreme Court’s ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act, Koster raised a green Yes card, along with the five Andrew Villeneuve
˜

redmond
Democrats. And when the candidates were asked about the “Citizens” United decision, Koster again gave the same answer as the Democrats: he indicated that he disagrees with the court’s majority opinion, which paved the way for an onslaught of unlimited, negative campaign advertising by shady Super PACs. As the debate drew to a close, Koster was asked by an audience member whether he would be uncompromising on the matter of drawing up budgets, or willing to consider revenue as well as cuts. “Grover Norquist has the Republican Party pretty much in his pocket. He makes them sign – the vast majority of them – sign a no new taxes pledge. Will you sign that pledge, and if you would, how is that going to make you an honest broker when you go into negotiations?” Koster responded, “Thank you for asking that question. I have signed that in previous campaigns. I will not sign it this year... If, by signing Grover Norquist’s pledge, they’re going to use it against me by saying (that) closing those (tax) loopholes is somehow a tax increase... I won’t sign it.” Koster’s answer seems to conflict with a promise he made to the Tea Party two years ago. In the aforementioned letter to TeaParty.org, posted
on the site’s Washington forum on Feb. 16, 2010, Koster wrote of himself: “I’m known as a policymaker who keeps his promises, sticks to his guns, and is never afraid to speak out for his beliefs. As such, I reaffirm my pledge to you that I will never vote for new or increased taxes.” Never is a pretty strong word. It’s absolutist. To be fair, Koster also made it clear during the debate that he is against letting any of the Bush tax cuts expire. But doesn’t he consider himself still bound by the unyielding, oneparagraph pledge he signed in 2010, to “oppose any and all efforts” to raise taxes? The pledge doesn’t have an expiration date, and there’s no doubt that he is a signatory. What does he mean by saying he decided against signing the pledge this year? Has he become more open-minded and willing to acknowledge that raising revenue has to be part of the equation in a responsible budget? If his views have evolved, he should be upfront with the people he’s seeking to represent, and make that clear. Andrew Villeneuve, a 2005 Redmond High graduate, is the founder and executive director of the Northwest Progressive Institute, a Redmondbased grassroots organization. 45TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT, POS. 2: JIM THATCHER
Thatcher aims to ‘bring greater accountability to state government’ Political newcomer and Union Hill area Republican Jim Thatcher is running for 45th District state representative, Position 2 “to help bring a fresh team to our citizen legislature and greater accountability to state government.” Pos. 2 in the 45th District is currently held by incumbent Rep. Larry Springer, D-Kirkland. “Our legislators have been gridlocked into four special sessions over the last two years and their budget proposals have been more on gimmicks and wishful thinking than real reforms and long-term sustainability,” Thatcher said in the press release. “As taxpayers we should demand better.” Thatcher said he will bring his business acumen and proven leadership to the state representative position. He is currently a principal program manager at Microsoft and has worked in the computer industry as an attorney and software developer for more than 20 years. In that role, he said he

COULD GUM DISEASE PROVE DEADLY?
It is now widely understood that gum disease can contribute to a host of potentially life-threatening conditions including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Research also indicates that women with periodontal disease are 3-5 times more likely to have a baby born prematurely compared with women without gum disease. However, is it possible that periodontal disease itself is deadly? According to recent research, the answer is “yes.” It seems that scientists have isolated an oral bacterium (Streptococcus tigurinus) that could be deadly if it enters the bloodstream through bleeding gums. While researchers begin to assess how common this bacterium is in the mouth, everyone has one more reason to floss and schedule regular dental check-ups that help avert gum disease. It has been estimated that 75% of Americans have some form of gum disease. At NW FAMILY and SPORTS DENTISTRY, we encourage you to talk with us about your oral health. Preventing dental disease is less costly and more rewarding than correcting the problem once it occurs. After all, teaching you how to prevent dental disease is our primary goal. We provide quality, personal dental care in a comfortable, immaculate, professional environment. You can find us in the Forest Office Park, Building F, at 14655 Bel-Red Road, Suite 101, near the Microsoft Main Campus in Bellevue. Let us help you bring out that natural smile. yclists from all over the world zoomed through the Marymoor Park Velodrome last Friday and Saturday, turning steeply to compete for a title in the 2012 Marymoor Grand Prix. “This velodrome is my favorite and I am definitely a little biased,” said Tela Crane of Sammamish. “This is where I grew up riding and it is a pretty good feeling when there are people saying my name all the way on the track, supporting me whether I do well or not.” Crane ended up claiming first place in the Elite Women, Bike Central Sprint category. Her next goal is to participate in the 2016 Olympics. Marymoor Park is the home to the only velodrome in Washington. The arena consists of two, 180-degree racetracks braced tightly against one another, allowing cyclists to elevate up the bank or drop down for a speed dash. “There is a great family atmosphere among the competitors,” said David Mann, director of the Grand Prix. “For the most part

ment, kids from different age groups were dispatched onto the racetrack separately while their parents cheered along. An announcer also kept the crowd on their toes from a tower above with witty remarks while broadcasting the event live through the Internet. At around 8 p.m. last Friday night, one of the wildest races, the Keirin Final, took place. Around eight competitors followed behind a scooter as it accelerated up to 30 mph. The scooter later exited the track and the cyclists competed in a one-lap dash for the finish line. In the end, it was two-time

Olympian Giddeon Massie from Pennsylvania who sealed the prize. “Ah, I felt good,” said Massie, as he described the moment he zoomed past the finish line. “You are a racer, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose and you have a lot of opportunities — it’s great to take a win out.” Massie competed in the Olympics in 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing. According to Mann, the racing keeps getting better and better each year with faster and more evenly competed matches. This year, prizes were once again given out; the bigger prizes included $350 to the first place winner of the Bike Central Match Sprint and $250 to the second place winner. Collectively, around $15,000 was given out during the event. For the Marymoor Crawl, up to $100 was collected from the audience and awarded to the racer who endured the longest time on his or her bike without putting a foot down or falling. The event offered food stands and clothing for purchase. Spectators were also encouraged to bring their own family picnics. The Grand Prix featured several national champions as well as competitors from other countries, who raced on fixed-gear bikes with no brakes at speeds up to 40 mph. Spazzo Italian Grill and Wine Bar in Redmond Town Center is one business that has had a lot of success with Think Redmond. General manager Cory Strobaugh said they typically get four to five customers per week who come in to take advantage of the free appetizer special offered through the program. Samantha Pak, Redmond reporter Erika Vandenbrande, economic development manager for the City of Redmond, said the benefit of this feature is that people can search for services that are in Redmond. With other online search engines such as Google and Bing, non-Redmond businesses will also show up as part of the results, she said. “Redmond is uniquely Redmond,” Vandenbrande said. The website recently got revamped and now businesses can go in to update their information themselves, which was not possible with the old website, Johnson said. Cards have also been distributed at community events such as Derby Days and Redmond Lights. he growth Redmond has experienced in recent years has led to various construction projects throughout the city. But while the projects were designed to accommodate increasing and future populations, Greater Redmond Chamber of Commerce communications, media and events director Carla Johnson said the growth surge created a current problem for local businesses: The construction was driving away customers. So in 2009, the chamber teamed up with representatives from the City of Redmond, local businesses, utility companies, faith groups and the Lake Washington School District to come up with a way to encourage people to buy local and support the Redmond business community. The result was Think Redmond — a buy-local program partnership among the chamber, city, Redmond Trip Resource and Incentive Program (R-TRIP) and local business owners. “The idea came about when there was so much construction going on and the businesses were being impacted by it,” Johnson said. She said the program is free and open to any licensed business in Redmond and provides the opportunity to be part of a Redmond-specific directory of about 575 businesses that allows people to search online for businesses and services in town.
program. The restaurant at 16499 N.E. 74th St. Suite E255 in Redmond Town Center offers cardholders a complimentary appetizer during happy hour and general manager Cory Strobaugh said they typically get four to five customers per week who come in to take advantage of the special. “That’s what brings them in,” he said. Strobaugh said while these customers come in specifically for the deals, they usually end up ordering other items off the menu, so Think Redmond has been a worthwhile program for Spazzo. He added that he also makes sure all Spazzo employees are aware of the special. “I have a whole board of all the promotional things we’re doing,” he said. Strobaugh added that he thinks promoting local businesses and encouraging people to keep it local is great for the Redmond economy. “I think it’s a great idea,” he said. In encouraging people to buy local, Vandenbrande said Think Redmond also encourages people to get out of their cars. She said buying local means Redmond residents and workers don’t have to drive everywhere to take care of business — they can park their car once, go about their shopping, dining and other activities and return to their cars once they’re done. Vandenbrande said with the city as one of the partners in Think Redmond, they are able to apply for grant funding as well. “(Think Redmond) is part of our fabric in terms of our economic development,” she said.

said product and services marketing senior director Jennifer Baisch. She said for iStreamPlanet, coming to Redmond made sense for them as they already had connections to the city. “We stream a number of Microsoft conferences and events,” she said, adding that the tech giant has been both a customer and partner. Baisch, a Sammamish resident who is based in the Redmond office, added that the city’s strong technology background also made Redmond a natural choice for expansion because it gives them access to a large pool of talent. Baisch said iStreamPlanet is also contributing to the local economy with its various job opportunities. iStreamPlanet was founded in 2000 and Baisch said they have worked with content providers such as NBC, Turner Broadcasting, AT&T and the 2008 and 2010 Olympics in Beijing and Vancouver, British Columbia. “iStreamPlanet is a leader in managing the live and on-demand broadcast of some of the largest sporting and corporate events online to Internet-enabled devices,” said iStreamPlanet founder and CEO Mio Babic in a press release. “As increasingly more viewers are turning to more than one device
to watch these events online — such as tablets, mobile phones, laptops, PCs and streaming media players or consoles like Roku and Xbox — our business is growing along with the need to bring on more software engineers. We are settling into our new Redmond location and look forward to bringing fresh talent to our closeknit company team.” iStreamPlanet’s Redmond office is the company’s second location in the United States and third worldwide. Baisch said the company also has an office in London. “We are a growing company and think that Redmond is a great place for a growing company to be,” she said. Tips on how to prevent a data breach A data breach can be a challenge for any business, but this is especially true for smaller businesses. Not only can it be more difficult for a smaller business to recover from a data breach, but criminals may also be more likely to target smaller firms. When a data breach occurs at a large firm or government agency, it winds up all over the news. If one occurred at a small business down the street, those unaffected would probably never hear about it. But a recent report released by Verizon found that nearly three-quarters of data breaches analyzed last year involved businesses with 100 employees or fewer.
“Most small-business owners simply do not believe they are at risk,” says Lynn LaGram, assistant vice president of small commercial underwriting for The Hartford. “The reality is that small businesses are often more vulnerable — making them easier targets.” For a business or organization that must handle sensitive customer, patient or employee information, it’s important to take measures that decrease the likelihood of a breach. Here are eight data protection “best practices” for a business: • Lock and secure sensitive customer, patient, member or employee information.

The Redmond Reporter Police Blotter is not intended to be representative of all police calls originating in Redmond, which gets more than 500 calls (emergency and non-emergency) per week.

Thefts: Redmond police responded to three theft reports. Two came from downtown at 7:25 a.m. and 7:37 a.m. The first involved a theft at a construction site in the 17300 block of Northeast 67th Court. Steve, age 55, was born on December 30, 1956 in Spokane, WA. He went into the arms of his Lord on July 13, 2012 while surrounded by his family at his home in Redmond. He fought a courageous 17-month battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Steve is survived by Jude, his wife of 26 years, son Cody 21, and daughter Kim 19, his parents Ed and Pauline Carlson, sister Lori Massey, and 8 nieces and nephews. He graduated with a degree in Advertising Art, and moved to Seattle with Jude in 1987 to pursue a career in advertising. For the last 13 years, he had his own contracting business in Redmond; Steve’s Home Refinement, through which he further pursued his love of artistic expression by way of landscaping and remodeling. Steve was a light-hearted and incredibly caring individual who drew people to him with his unique sense of humor. A faithful and loving husband, as well as a devoted and inspiring father, Steve truly blessed people with his presence wherever he went. A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. this Friday, July 27 at Timberlake Church in Redmond. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to donate to and/or join ‘Team Steve’ at the Walk to Defeat ALS on September 22. webwa.alsa.org

Plan Introductions
If you have other pets in your home, plan the introduction of your new family member carefully! Introduce the pets in a neutral location so that your resident pet is less likely to view the newcomer as a territorial intruder. From the first meeting, you want both pets to expect “good things” to happen when they’re in each other’s presence- offer plenty of treats!
Pet-Proof Your Home
Your pet will most likely want to explore every inch of her new environment. First, make sure that poisons and hazards are safely out of harm’s way. Secure low cabinets, if necessary, and remove shoes, cords, and other items that may be chewed.

King County residents are required to obtain pet licenses. You can visit the County’s website for more information. Seattle residents may also obtain licenses directly from the City of Seattle and Renton residents may also get their pet licenses directly from the City of Renton.
Get Ready To Roll
Stock up on essentials - food, bowls, blankets, grooming tools, identification tag, leash and/ or collar - but don’t get ahead of yourself. Wait to purchase items like toys and treats until you know more about your pet’s personality. Some pets are picky eaters and it may be necessary to try several kinds of food before investing in a large supply. Similarly, money for expensive beds, clothes, and toys might be better spent once you have a better handle on your four-legged friend’s taste and temperament.

Peyton is everything you could want in a cat - all wrapped up in one package: She is athletic (leaps up tall window ledges in a single bound), playful (dangling toys, laser light, catnip mice), has wonderful silky soft fur (and is very pretty), is incredibly easy going (never hisses or swats), is a willing lap warmer, has the PURRfect motor, consistently uses her scratch pads and litter box, and self-feeds on dry food. Peyton is pretty shy at first but once she warms up she is chalk full of personality and really fun to have around!!! This extra toed (polydactyl), calico cutie is 4 years old and looking for a low key household after being in a home with a young child, which was stressful for her. We’re located at 13132 NE 177th Place in Woodinville. We are open for visitors between 12pm and 6pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

might think. One of the most hazardous rooms in the home is the bathroom. Its slippery surfaces and tendency to be crowded with products and objects makes it a hazard for slipping, tripping and other mishaps. As you consider making alterations to your home that enhance security and safety, it’s the logical place to start. • Clear away clutter. Bottles and jars and grooming tools frequently crowd counters, closets and the corners of tubs and showers. Make use of hangers, shelves and wall-mounted baskets to keep things neatly tucked away, providing a cleaner environment that’s
also better looking and less likely to cause trips or spills. • Bathe in safety. With limited mobility, moving in and out of the tub can be difficult, if not downright dangerous. One renovation solution to that problem is installing a walk-in tub. • Choose rugs carefully. Bath mats and rugs are both functional and decorative. Rugs that don’t stay in place can present a problem of their own and lead you to trip. Opt for mats and rugs that have non-skid backing, but which still look harmonious with the rest of your bathroom decor. • Bring things up to the right height. Your bathroom routine can be an

Having a commode and a sink at a higher level that prevents you from overexertion during your daily routine will add to the comfort and safety of your bathroom. Unless unforeseen events or circumstances force its premature arrival, retirement is a life transition for which most people carefully plan. Of course, some people never retire in the technical sense. They just keep working simply to “keep their hands in” or for the pure joy of staying active. For the rest, retirement is a time to relax and experience the luxury of doing what they want to do, when, and with whom they want to do it. For these couples and individuals, there are a variety of options available to retirees, from retirement communities to assisted living facilities and nursing homes, that enable us to plan for what many consider to be the most rewarding time of our lives. P.S. While “retirement” is a broad term, retirement planning is an individual matter that is as personal and particular as the person or couple mapping it out.

or today’s generation of aging adults, individuality and independence are values they’ve lived out for decades. As the years go by, lifestyle changes become a necessity, due to limited mobility and health concerns, but it doesn’t necessarily mean giving up personality. Aging in place, in the comfort of your home, is a priority for countless people. That often means making adjustments to your home, but some alterations can contribute to making your space feel more institutional and less “you.” A balance between style and safety is the key - and finding it is easier than you

ClearChoice team of specialists brings you a dental implant solution that fits your budget ... in just one day!* A LEADER IN DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT Virtually every adult will lose a tooth, and as we get older, more Americans will suffer with missing and failing teeth. These days, however, there are dental implant solutions that either didn’t exist in the past or which were difficult to access. But now, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are leading the way in innovative dental implant treatments. Dental Implants are a permanent solution for dental problems. And now your treatment, from our team of specialists, can often be accomplished in just one day *… and without the need for additional bone graft surgeries. In fact, dental implants can last a lifetime and have become the treatment of choice for replacement of missing and failing teeth. With more than 10,000 dental implant procedures performed, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers have become a leader in dental implant treatment delivery. TECHNOLOGY Every ClearChoice Dental Implant Center includes an on-site 3D CAT Scan. The 3D CAT Scan technology costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. This technology provides three-dimensional and cross-sectional views that allow ClearChoice doctors to examine the quality and density of the bone that will anchor the dental implants; select the correct type and size of implants; determine the precise placement of implants, and avoid the nerves and sinuses. Since every smile is custom designed, each ClearChoice Center has a specialized Dental Implant in-house lab to custom make your smile. They said they had specialists, a lab, and high tech equipment all at one location, but I had no idea that they could really do all of this in just one day!* — Actual ClearChoice patient
