A jet skier skims past a well-marked pier at Kitsap Lake Park in Bremerton Tuesday afternoon. Kitsap Public Health has advised all visitors to the lake to avoid contact with the water due to a recent toxic blue-green algae bloom.

Children face biggest risk from bacteria By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

The Kitsap Public Health District has issued a toxic algae health advisory for residents and visitors of Kitsap Lake. The warning is based upon ongoing testing of blue green algae in the lake, and officials said the water can cause illness in humans and kill pets, fish, waterfowl and livestock. Water samples collected July 24 revealed levels of toxins to be at 6.7 per liter of water. Warnings are issued by the district when levels reach or exceed 6.0 per liter of water. Jim Zimny, Senior Environmental Health Specialist for the Kitsap Public Health District, said the

lake water is particularly dangerous to the young. “We really need to emphasize that younger children are especially at risk,” Zimny said. “Because of their body size they are more susceptible to illness. “ Symptoms of illness from ingestion of the lake water can include skin rash, dizziness or weakness, respiratory allergy, abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting. Zimny said anyone exhibiting these symptoms should seek immediate and proper medical attention. During the advisory, residents and visitors are urged to avoid drinking water from the lake, avoid swimming and other water contact activities, limit access of pets and livestock to lake water, avoid consuming fish caught during the algae bloom and rinsing boats and trailers before traveling to another lake.

To report a waterborne illness, algae bloom, a case of swimmer’s itch, or for further questions regarding Kitsap Public Health’s lake monitoring program, contact the district at 360-337-5235 or visit their website at www.kitsappublichealth.org. Information about current swimming and beach closures is also available at 800-223-9355. Lake-goers are also advised to contact the health district if they notice large numbers of dead fish in the lake, sudden or unexplained sickness or death of a pet cat or dog or the onset of skin rash, dizziness or weakness, respiratory allergy, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or vomiting in people after contact with lake water.

Consultants hired by Kitsap Regional Library continue to study the feasibility of raising enough private money to build a new Silverdale Branch Library. KR L had proposed building a new, 1 7, 5 0 0 - s q u a r e - f o o t Silverdale Library when it offered a levy for voter consideration in 2010. The levy was defeated and KRL explored other ways to create a new Silverdale Library. It was determined that raising the funds privately would be the most viable option. The study is expected to be completed and submitted to the KRL Board of Trustees at its scheduled Sept. 27 meeting. The report is expected to determine the community’s capacity and willingness to donate funds for a new Silverdale Library, as well as if the community would prefer KRL to build a new facility or renovate existing commercial space in Silverdale.

‘Electric gas’ avail at college By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

Electric vehicle charging stations at Olympic College are now part of the school’s philosophy of energy efficiency and sustainability and may also be a signpost of changing trends in local driving options. The recently built charging stations are located on campus in the G-1 parking area east of Warren Avenue The stations are also available to the general public as a stipulation of federal grant money used to build the five stations. The chargers were installed by residential and commercial charger provider BLINK with grant money supplied by the U.S. Department of Energy. Users access the chargers by registering with BLINK, and the company sends the new user a card to operate the machines. BLINK charges a membership or guest fee to use the chargers and the cost for charging a car is estimated to be between $1 and $2 per hour. Times to charge a car vary with BLINK estimating a seven to eight hour time frame to charge most electric vehicles at the campus units. Bill Wilkie, Director of Facilities Services for Olympic College, said the college was in the process of building the parking lot when BLINK approached

Robert Hopkins charges his 2011 Nissan Leaf with car chargers available on the Olympic College campus. Hopkins said he has seen the availability of chargers, such as the ones on campus, increase rapidly in the prior year. with the idea to add the chargers. Representatives of BLINK approached the college with the possibility of federal funding and convinced officials at the school that onsite charges could enhance the parking lot project at a minimum of cost to the school. “We were doing work on the parking lot anyway,” he said. “And the charging stations just seemed like a natural.” The lot was designed under the Sustainable Sites Initiative, a voluntary national guideline established by the American Society of Landscape Architects and other agencies which seeks to create sustainable land design in construction and maintenance of such sites,

and Wilkie said the charging stations seemed a logical extension of the guidelines. “The entire lot was built around sustainable practices,” Wilkie said. “So we knew it was a good idea to include chargers for the electric vehicles also.” Wilkie said the cost of adding the chargers was nominal to the college. He said a Department of Energy grant for $12,908 left the college to pay $2,868. The stations came online in January. Since then, Wilkie said he has seen three regular users of the stations as well as many users who take advantage of the chargers while passing through Bremerton. “We have one instructor who uses the stations all the time, and I am looking for-

ward to seeing how usage will look this year.” Robert Hopkins charges his Nissan Leaf at the station. Hopkins said he was not aware of the stations until recently, but plans to use them more in the future. Hopkins has owned his EV since 2011 and has seen the number of available stations, such as the ones at the college, increase rapidly since that time. “When I first got the car it was a little bit of a challenge to find a charger, but now they are all over the place,” Hopkins said. Chuck Capps, co-owner of Advantage Nissan Bremerton said there was an initial surge in the purchases of electric vehicles at his dealership when the Nissan Leaf became available in 2011. Since that time sales have dropped slightly but remained fairly strong, he said. “The electric car is not a new invention, but it is taking root across the world and the nation,” he said. “We have sold 107 since April.” BLINK offers a map of its available stations on its website, and there are many online applications available for finding other charging sites through companies such as Plugshare. Wilkie said the college has also moved to electric vehicles for on campus travel and See ELECTRIC, A5

Bremerton man threatens to ‘top the Aurora massacre’ By KEVAN MOORE

kmoore@soundpublishing.com

A troubled East Bremerton man has been arrested for felony harassment after making repeated threats on Facebook to kill a former manager at a Silverdale restaurant and many others in an effort to “top the Aurora massacre.” Nicholas Adam Purcell, 26, asked officers to take him to a mental hospital as he was arrested, according to authorities. He told police that he didn’t want to hurt anyone, “but his mind was telling him to.” Purcell was booked into the Kitsap County Jail on $100,000 bail for the felony harassment and on $1,000 bail for an outstanding drug charge. The Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office was first alerted to Purcell’s threats by Silverdale Red Lobster employee Kristina D. Carr, 22, at 9 p.m. Friday. Carr, who is studying psychology, told deputies she doesn’t usually respond to messages from Purcell,

who was fired from the restaurant in January, but his postings on Friday became increasingly concerning. “When I was able to read all of the many messages that Nicholas sent today I found several references to the recent mass murders in Aurora, Colorado,” wrote Deputy Sonya Matthews in a police report. “There were several statements about being sympathetic to the Colorado murders and wishing he had been able to kill more victims.” Purcell’s messages also made specific threats toward his former manager Corey Smith. “I’ve warned Corey about how he can prevent disaster from happening or I was going to top the Aurora massacre with over 100 victims instead of 60 like the Batman one. You better call the cops or have Corey come see me, or I am going to flash the [expletive] out on whaling days crowd because you [expletive] fakes never give See THREAT, A7

Scratch the itch IN OUR OPINION

The “toxic algae” situation at Kitsap Lake requires more than a scratch to ease the itch, or worse, gotten from the tainted waters. It requires new thinking. The bloom of toxic blue-green algae that has kept most lake-goers out of the water recently is beaming example of the importance of the new planning rules proposed for Kitsap County’s remand-driven rewrite of Urban Growth Area boundaries and rules. Kitsap Lake’s shoreline is choked with homes, apartments and in three cases entire neighborhoods sloping to the shore. Except for its tiny southern reach, the entire lake is subject to the spills and hydrologic abuse of suburban life poorly planned to retain anything resembling a natural state in or around the lake. The blue-green algae is not an algae, but rather a bacteria that feeds well in a phosphate rich environment. It’s illness inducing existence shows an imbalance caused largely by the sewage “spilled” into the lake each year mixing with runoff of lawns manicured by a host of nitrogen rich chemical compounds; and whatever the creek feeding the lake picks up along its course from its source below two gravel mines. It’s the result of unchecked human density. The public health situation illustrates the dilemma faced by planners regulating population density while trying to retain the “rural quality of life” so many seek in Central Kitsap County. Today’s condition of the lake also shows how little a community is willing to do on an individual basis to make it happen. Along with the proposed reductions in homes per acre, perhaps the most long term beneficial idea proposed in the new UGA plans is to no longer allow temporary septic systems in housing developments within UGAs that are expected to one day connect to utilities. Even better for the longrun is the idea of excluding all wetlands and waterways from the boundaries. The next public meeting on the proposal is set for Aug. 27.

CKSD to take comments on cuts to 2012-2013 programs ByPatrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

The Central Kitsap School District on Aug. 8 will offer the public an opportunity to comment on its current proposed budget before board approval of the plan on Aug. 22. The current budget has taken shape after a long battle with money in the district which included loss of Heavy Impact Aid to the district but also has seen a shortfall of money change from $6.3 million in early budget projections to the current estimated shortfall amount of $700,000 to $900,000. The current proposed budget includes cuts to programs such as $7,000 from at-risk services and $40,000 from “diversity” services and $40,000 from programs for gifted students. Other proposed budget dissections include cutting $136,000

from curriculum support and $110,000 from the technology budget. Central Kitsap School District Superintendent Greg Lynch said state law required a public presentation of the budget before final adoption, and said he hoped the public would take the opportunity to comment on the district’s use of taxpayer money. “I think it is important because we have to demonstrate we are being good stewards of the community’s resources,” Lynch aid. “And this is a chance to demonstrate we have been.” Lynch said he has been through eight such presentations, and the current budget has been an exceptional challenge. “Last year at this time had you asked me if we could reduce $6.3 million to under a million, I would say it was nearly impossible,” he said. “I am thankful that the budget

has ten electric vehicles in use by campus staff. He said the college found the vehicles to be a means of saving money through daily operations as well as offering an alternative to internal combustion vehicles. While electric vehicles have faced many challenges including initial pricing, concerns over safety, such as fires from battery packs on the Chevrolet Volt and failures in development on vehicles such as the Tesla

has been reduced as much as it has.” David McVicker, district finance director, said staff had made sacrifices in an attempt to ensure students felt the least impact from the cuts. “Fortunately the reductions are very limited,” he said. “Most of these cuts will not affect students and will be done through attrition with staff.” Parents, teachers and board members have expressed concerns about the transparency of communications in the district involving finance and other issues. JD Sweet, A teacher at Central Kitsap High School since 1977, said he is among those who have been outspoken critics of the communications and the budget process in the past, but said the Aug. 8 meeting is an opportunity for the public to have their voices heard in a more bilat-

eral setting. “It seems like this meeting will be a little more democratic and interactive,” he said. “People will be able to ask questions and make comments and speak up in support of programs or learn more about cuts in programs. That is the value of this particular meeting.” Sweet said attendees should be informed on the budget and prepared to ask meaningful questions. “They have to ask tough questions and maybe be prepared to hear answers they don’t like,” he said. “But at least it is a chance for interac-

tion.” Central Kitsap School Board member Christy Cathcart said it is important for citizens concerned with the budget to attend the meeting. “I always like to see people in engaged in what they own, and they own this,” she said. “There are board members and administrators to oversee the budget, but they own it.” Sweet said the district had faced many challenges this year and this was an opportunity to voice opinions on the way the administration met such challenges. “They have a tough job,

All I have to worry about is rotating or replacing tires.” Wilkie said the chargers are not just part of a vision of sustainability and cost-effectiveness for the college; they are also a personal philosophy. “I make 100 percent of my electricity at my home with wind and solar, we have been off grid for 13 years now,” he said. “I really personally believe in this.”

A 68 page document regarding the current proposed budget is available at the district’s website at http://www.cksd.wednet.edu. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at the District Administration Building at 9210 Silverdale Way NW in Silverdale. and there have been complaints about transparency,” he said. “If people do not take this opportunity to speak on the budget, that is their fault, it is on them.”

Johnson said he has confidence in all of this year’s programming for the theater, and said each performance holds the possibility of something unexpected. One of the most memorable such performances was Bobby McFerrin, Johnson said. “Right in the middle of a show, he heard voices from the back and he figures out that there are choir members from Olympic College in the audience,” Johnsons said. “He got them all on stage and conducted this vocal master class with them, it was

great.” The theater has also seen its fair share of show business moments, Johnson said. He said Charlton Heston had been booked as a last-minute replacement for Robert Wagner for a play titled “Love Letters.” The show was scheduled after controversial statements made by Heston in the wake of the Columbine Shootings in Colorado, and Johnson said the Secret Service and personal security had descended on the theater while hundreds of media outlets had called seeking interviews with Heston. On the night of the show, as staff was preparing to set up the theater for dinner, Johnson said Heston walked out on the stage making a request while still in his underwear. “He was asking for milk because we had cookies backstage but forgot the milk,” Johnson said. Such moments were just a part of the long history of a theater that had been a landmark in the community since opening as a movie house in 1942, Johnson said. Johnson said the theater has always received strong support from the community and feels the new season will continue to serve that community. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent said the theater remains a landmark and an artistic cornerstone to the community. She said the history and tradition behind Admiral Theater made it one of the first projects chosen by the city towards revitalization efforts downtown. “It was among first things we began on,” Lent said. “We had the boardwalk started and when we took a look at downtown we decided it should be one of the first things we should bring back and it remains a cornerstone of the revitalization to this day.” Lent said the theater continues to serve the community on multiple levels. “Since then it has been a showcase for the arts in Bremerton, and we have been able to keep tickets affordable for Navy personnel and others who can’t afford big tickets prices.” For more information on the upcoming season contact the theater at 360-373-6743 or visit the theater’s website at www.admiraltheatre.org. “The Admiral Theater is a tremendous asset to the community,” Lent said. “It continues to enhance the quality of life in Bremerton and beyond.”

He also said he that he was serious and that people should notify the police. He wrote “I’m going to have to murder him (Corey) in cold blood before I shoot everyone at the olive garden then KILL MYSELF.” Deputy Matthews said she was unable to contact Smith, but noted in her report that several other Red Lobster employees had also received threats. Deputy Matthews contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and an agent told Matthews that, after consulting with her partner, she did not believe that the U.S. Attorney’s Office would file charges. The FBI agent, though, asked for ongoing updates. The next day, after finding probable cause for his arrest for felony harassment, along with his outstanding arrest warrant on a drug charge, deputies headed to Purcell’s East Bremerton residence where they were met at the door by Purcell’s mom. A few minutes later, Purcell emerged holding his shoes and socks and said that he needed help. “I asked him if he wanted to hurt himself and he said he didn’t, but his mind was telling him otherwise,” Deputy Lee Watson said “I asked if he wanted to hurt anyone else and he said he wouldn’t, but his mind was telling him to.” Purcell admitted to police that he previously owned a .22 cal rifle but had sold it to a local gun shop a few years ago. Police said Purcell asked his mother to turn over his laptop to police. Purcell was transported to the jail and considered suicidal.

Senior Singles meet up for fun and food By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

For Red Duffy, meetings held by the Kitsap Senior Singles group are a place to have a good meal, have fun playing games and simply enjoy mingling with other seniors. She is not alone. The meetings, held once a month at various locations with a potluck dinner and games afterward, draw dozens of seniors from around the area who are looking for fun and companionship. Duffy said she was at first hesitant to attend the events but now looks forward to the meetings. “I go as often as I can,” she said. “I look forward to it every month.” At a meeting held on

Bremerton police chief will retire in Feb. Rogers’ BPD career began 36 years ago as a patrol officer By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com

Bremerton Police Chief Craig Rogers announced an end to his law enforcement career that began as a patrol officer with the city 36 years ago. He will retire in February. “During my tenure as chief, the focus has been with teamwork, bringing quality policing to the citizens of Bremerton and instituting organizational change,” Rogers said in a statement. Rogers was hired by BPD as a patrol officer Feb. 9, 1976 and promoted

to chief on Jan. 1, 2006. During his time at the helm, Rogers oversaw the acquisition of black and white patrol cars, new uniforms and moved its headquarters from Fourth Street to Burwell Street. Rogers said that the department also modernized equipment and technological capabilities while adding support resources to all of its units. “From implementing core values to support decision making to implementing policing initiatives that include focused policing concepts which

Traffic stop finds pills and a gun By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com

A Bremerton man was arrested Saturday for a firearm carry violation when a deputy discovered a pistol in a vehicle during an otherwise routine traffic stop. A South Kitsap woman was also arrested for illegal drug possession. David Ernest Meyers, 43, was booked into the Kitsap County for carrying the firearm without a license and Samantha L. Bernier was booked for violating the Uniform Controlled Substance Act. Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cory Manchester stopped a blue Chevrolet Cavalier with no front plates and cracked windshield at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Ricky Road and Sylvan Way. Deputy Manchester noticed furtive movements in the vehicle while making the stop and approached the passenger side of the car. After circling around to the driver’s side, Deputy Manchester noticed a silver and black handgun that was barely visible between some clothing and a purse. “I drew my firearm and ordered all occupants to raise their hands up,” Deputy Manchester said. “It made me very nervous that I had been on the stop for a few minutes, and nobody

inside the car bothered to tell me about the gun, which was mostly concealed.” Deputy Manchester held Meyers, Bernier and the driver at gunpoint until a pair of Bremerton police officers arrived to provide backup. The driver of the car told police that Meyers pulled the gun out of the glovebox while they were being pulled over and told her to shut up. Meyers later told police that he didn’t know what a CPL, or concealed pistol license, was, and that he thought it was okay to have a gun in the vehicle as long as it was unloaded and visible. He also told police he bought the gun, a .45 caliber Colt with a silver and black grip, for $450 from somebody named “Tom” about a year ago. Police say that Meyers was wearing a holster at the time of his arrest. An empty magazine was found on the floorboard in the backseat, six unspent rounds of .45 caliber Winchester ammunition were found in the glovebox and one more unspent round was found on the front passenger seat floorboard. Police also found an unmarked pill bottle with four 30 milligram Percocet pills. Bernier admitted that the pills were hers and she did not have a prescription, according to police.

has played a role in the decline in the crime rate,” Rogers said. “We have brought change to virtually every component of the organization. All with the goal of bringing forward a Department that the citizens have confidence in and support.” Bremerton’s per capita crime rate has fallen dramatically with Rogers in charge. It fell from a statewide high of 11.7 incidents per one thousand to its current rate of 6.3 per one thousand for 2011. But, Rogers’ tenure at the helm of BPD has not been without controversy. Forty of 54 members of the police officers guild

passed a vote of no-confidence in Rogers in 2011, following investigations into a sex scandal involving a teenager who joined the department’s Explorer program in late 2010. Rogers has also overseen three failed homicide investigations in the last 18 months, that his department believes are the result of a serial killer, while pushing aside investigations into other crimes such as the embezzlement of an estimated $200,000 from Bremerton’s American Legion Post 68. Rogers, though, has maintained the confidence and support of the

mayor and city council over the years. “I don’t believe there has been one issue that the department has brought forward to the council that they have not supported in an effort to keep Bremerton safe,” Rogers said. Rogers noted that following budget cuts in 2009, the department has secured almost $2 million in grant funding to keep officers working. The department has gone from a high of 66 officers to its current roster of 54. Mayor Patty Lent praised Rogers and his department following his retirement announce-

ment. “During his tenure I have attended his award ceremonies each year recognizing the outstanding performance of our police officers for service above and beyond their assigned duties,” Lent said. “I appreciate his dedication to our citizens and our city.” Rogers was promoted to sergeant in 1983. He made captain in 1996. “It has been my privilege to work with the dedicated men and women of the police department,” Rogers said.

Duck race breaks records for time and community support By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com

The 19th Annual Great Kitsap Duck Race took to the water July 29 with 22,000 rubber ducks splashing their way to a record finish. “From the time last duck hit water to the time the first

duck crossed the finish line was 10 minutes,” Barbara Beagle, Silverdale Rotarian and Marketing Chair for the event, said. “That is the fastest finish time we have ever had.” A major fundraiser for the Silverdale Rotary Club, the event raised $76,000 that

organizers said will benefit the community. Although the race was completed in record time, Beagle said planning and preparation for the duck race began almost a year ago with organizers finding business sponsors, volunteers and selling tickets for the race at $5 a duck or $20 for five ducks.

“Planning for the race starts in September of the prior year,” she said. “It is almost a year round effort.” Rich Arper, chairman for the race, said the money raised from the event will go to support the community on multiple levels. Arper said about $30,000 will go to continue to support the Hazelwood YMCA Teen Center with other money going to support a host of other community needs. Although the race did not raise as much as last year’s total of $82,000, Arper said he was pleased with the outcome and said he was grateful for the continued community support of the race. Beagle said the event had

also broken records in the area of community support. “We just so much appreciate all of the support from the community,” she said. “We had 84 sponsors this year, which is a record, and we couldn’t do it without the thousands of people buying ducks and all of the volunteers involved.” Beagle said she was grateful to sponsors such as Advantage Nissan who supplied the race with prizes. She also thanked volunteers such as those from Kitsap High School and the United States Marine Corps who made the race possible. Arper said community support and spirit was always strong for the event and he

felt that the spirit of another long-time supporter of the race had been present at the race. Hank Mann-Sykes, often referred to as Mr. Silverdale for his support of the community and especially the duck race, passed away in May and was absent from the event, but Arper said he felt Mann-Sykes spirit when the ducks hit the water. “It is almost like Hank gave us a sign when that wind came up for us to finish in record time,” he said. “It had been calm all afternoon, and that breeze came up just as we were ready to put the ducks in the water.”

Kitsap County voters have a few new places to drop their ballots for the Aug. 7 primary. The county added a few more 24-hour ballot drop boxes and the option of mobile stations brought directly to area voters and recent changes in legislature that allows military and overseas voters to submit their ballots electronically. Shaw n Dev i ne, Communications Coordinator for the Kitsap County Auditor’s office, said the additions are among

efforts by the county to make casting ballots during the mail-only elections more easy for voters. The 24-hour ballot drops are available in Bainbridge Island, East and West Bremerton, Silverdale, Port Orchard and Poulsbo. Devine said drop boxes will take ballots until voting ends at 8 p.m. Aug. 7. “This is the first year we have had all six locations available,” Devine said. Accessible voting locations are also available to voters and are located in Port Orchard and Poulsbo with the Port Orchard location available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 6 and

both locations available 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 7. Devine said the auditor’s office is also offering mobile voting booths to seniors and others who might have issues making it to voting locations. The auditor’s office has visited senior living centers such as Claremont Senior Living and Willows Retirement community in Bremerton. “It is just another way we try to help voters,” Devine said. Another means of helping voters is the ability to view and mark ballots online. Although online ballots are not new to the county,

A ballot drop box in front of the Sylvan Way Library in Bremerton will be open 24 hours a day until voting closes at 8 p.m. for the Aug. 7 primary. Officials said the drop box is another way the county is making voting easier for Kitsap residents.

Devine said the auditor’s office views them as another means of helping voters. “Visually impaired voters can really find it helpful,” he said. “They are able to use software like Jaws and mark it independently and print it at home and then mail it where they might have trouble with paper ballots.” Devine said a big change in voting involving the community is new legislation that allows military and other overseas voters the ability to submit their ballots electronically without mailing a signature. More than 15,000 active duty sailors and Marines live in Kitsap County with several thousand expected to be deployed to the Middle East. Military and overseas voters register early online and continue to receive email ballots for future elections. Devine said the process for viewing, marking and submitting ballots online is designed to be easy and help can be found online or by contacting the auditor’s office. More information on voting methods and locations can be found online at http://www.kitsapgov.com/ aud/elections.htm or by contacting the auditor’s office at 360-337-7128.

where liquor is being sold. Deputy Heather Wright was working foot patrol at Whaling Days when she encountered two security people and a waitress in front of the NW Byron Street bar at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The waitress, Jessica Smitley, told Deputy Wright that she felt a gun when she placed her hand on Williams’ lower back near his waistline. Williams told Smitley it was

a cell phone, which he displayed, and not a gun. But Smitley said that she again felt for and found the gun. Deputy Wright eventually escorted Williams outside and searched him for weapons, but found none. Williams insisted that he never had a gun and that he kept his cellphone in his back pocket. Bar security, meanwhile,

recovered a firearm near a garbage can in the outside dance area of the bar. The pistol, a black High Point Firearms model JHP .45 ACP, was in a small black synthetic Blackhawk size #6 fabric holster designed for inside the waistband carry, according to police. “He insisted if he had thrown the gun down that someone would have seen him

and he insisted he never had a gun and did not have one concealed in his waistband tonight while inside the bar,” Deputy Wright wrote in her report. “I asked Daniel if he had a concealed weapons permit and he said that he didn’t.” Smitley, though, insisted she had felt a gun and Williams was arrested and transported to the Kitsap County Jail.

he forests and bays of North Kitsap, with the Olympic Mountain range in the background, can be very inspiring. Two young women from the heart of Kitsap are sharing that inspiration, and you can listen to it. Meagan Grandall, 25, and Kendra Cox, 22, formed the music duo Lemolo about four years ago. The North Kitsap High School graduates have grown in popularity,

breaking into the Seattle music scene with their sweet-sounding tunes and leaving behind rave reviews from multiple publications. They’ve gone on four tours, one with headliner Seattle band Head and the Heart. They have played house shows, nightclubs, coffee shops and music festivals. Now, they have a fulllength album. “It’s pretty magical to be in [the] place that we’re in right now,” Cox said. Cox, keyboardist and drummer, was a fan of the band before it was a band.

Cox met Grandall, guitarist and vocalist, while the two taught kayaking at Liberty Bay Marina several years ago. Grandall was playing at coffee shops around Kitsap and Seattle, and Cox became her biggest fan. Grandall said she and Cox were friends for more than a year before Cox mentioned she played music. Grandall invited her to help form a band to play at Seattle University’s Battle of the Bands, where Grandall was a student. Eventually, Grandall and Cox went to work as a

After playing under Grandall’s name for a while, the two realized they needed their own identity. The women racked their brains for a name and, eventually, turned to their childhood home. “That road, Lemolo Shore Drive, is a road we

all spent tons of time on growing up,” Grandall said. “Kendra taught me how to longboard on that road ... Tons of summertime memories.” After they decided on “Lemolo,” they found out the word is Chinook jargon for “wild” and “untamed,” the meaning of which was a “cool little

added bonus,” Grandall said. Both call their music process “very organic,” but each approach from different backgrounds. Grandall has played piano since she was 4, and has written lyrics and music since high school. “I’m at my guitar, or See LEMOLO, Page 3

Continued from page 2 piano, and let it flow,” she said. “If I let it flow long enough, a more tangible idea will start to form. [I don’t] think about it ahead of time.” She finds living in Poulsbo, a relatively quiet space, is essential to her creative space. When songwriting, “Those are some of the coolest moments that I have ever had ... the feeling of sort of letting it take over me. I almost feel powerless.” Cox spent more time listening to music growing up than creating it, but was around plenty of musical influences. She said her father played guitar at home, and an aunt and uncle toured as a band and encouraged many of her inspirations. Cox first got her drum set at age 13, to start a Blink-182 cover band. The band didn’t work out, and the drums sat at Cox’s house for years, until Lemolo resurrected them. Their chemistry in place, the women began playing Grandall’s songs. While Grandall is still the primary songwriter, Grandall and Cox said they’ve started writing more collaboratively. “As we get more comfortable with each other in songwriting, there are moments to spread our wings a little more,” Cox said. “Space is something

Friday, August 3, 2012 we both value in our music ... it really lets one thing kind of be the shining glory in any one moment.” Their first album, “The Kaleidoscope,” is the catalyst of their career so far. After playing shows for years and going on tour, Lemolo wanted to keep the momentum going and decided to produce their own album instead of waiting until they were signed with a record label. Saving every penny they earned for two years, it took Lemolo more than a year to complete “The Kaleidoscope.” The name took just as long to come up with. Grandall said because the songs they recorded were written over a long period of time, in different emotional states, there wasn’t a definitive theme to the album. They were looking for a concept where “lots of little individual things or components that are different from each other, but that come together in a way to make a whole that is beautiful.” Rejected album name: “Patchwork Quilt.” Eventually, Grandall thought of a kaleidoscope while in the shower, she said. Their CD release party in June at the Columbia City Theatre sold out within hours, to their surprise. So, the women decided to add a second show the next night. “We’ve found, overwhelmingly, that the Seattle music community

[is] more supportive than competitive,” Grandall said. Cox added, “The city just wants music too, the city is just kind of eating it up, which is great.” The music they create has a raw, vulnerable quality, full of emotion. But whatever vulnerability these women have, they pour into their songs. In “Letters,” Grandall’s ethereal voice is matched by Cox’s steady keyboard, while in “We Felt the Fall,” Cox’s drums reverberate and make Grandall’s voice stronger. What is left is two strong musicians doing what they love. “We’re doing this for ourselves ultimately,” Cox said. “It’s great if people are there to share with them, but sometimes I’ll turn to Meagan [and say] ‘You play for me and I’ll play for you, let’s just play for each other.’ ” Both women say there are a number of factors to the success they’ve had so far, including support from family and friends, camaraderie with other Seattle musicians, but mainly due to hard work. Cox and Grandall said it was about three and a half years ago when they sat down and realized they wanted to make this their career — their passion wasn’t going to be working 9 a.m to 5 p.m., it was music — where the work never seems to end, but the rewards for them are endless. “Kendra and I were the

ones who wanted to give it everything, be willing to move back in with our moms,” Grandall — who lives with her mom in Poulsbo — laughed. Kendra lives in Seattle, and works part-time. Cox listed off the “coveted places” they’ve played in the last few years: “To play at the radio station we listened to as kids, to tour, play at the Gorge, Bumbershoot, Block Party ... I’ve been going to Bumbershoot since I was 15, then to

get to play there, to get to do things like that [I] secretly dreamed of doing. It’s crazy to be doing it and having it work.” Grandall added, “A year to the day that we played our first show all together, Kendra and I played our first show just the two of us.” The show was at Neumos, the famous Seattle venue. “It was the first time we played a stage like that ever, we practiced every day for four weeks,”

kitsapweek

Grandall said. “We were nervous, we didn’t know what people would say ... but everyone was really nice. We doubted ourselves, but [after Neumos] we realized we can do this.” Grandall acts as the band manager, booking agent and accountant, while Cox employs her skills as a designer. They have already begun writing new songs. “There are always little pieces of songs floating around, coming together when they need to,” she said. Grandall said she hopes to inspire young girls to get into the music scene. When starting to play around Seattle, she was sur-

prised to see it as such a male-dominated field — not just musicians, she said, but no women light or sound engineers or booking agent. “Something that I hold really dearly is I hope that Kendra and I inspire other girls to pick up instruments and play songs … and have courage to share them with other people,” she said. “There’s a whole added joy of being able to share [music] with other people … It feels really empowering to do that.” To learn more about the band and listen to “The Kaleidoscope,” visit www.lemolomusic.com.

1/4 tsp Aji Amarillo dried (heat level 6) Mix the ingredients. Add the peeled and cleaned shrimp. Add all of the ingredients to a self sealing bag or container with a lid. Refrigerate for at least one hour before grilling. Place some olive oil on your grill pan for indoor cooking. Brush the oil all over to make sure the shrimp does not stick. Cook the shrimp on medium-high heat, approximately two to three minutes on each side. You can also grill the shrimp on an outdoor grill. Look for the shrimp to turn completely white and pink. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before placing on top of your salad.

A mecca for wine lovers is 1.5 hours away N

ever has wine country been so close to Washington’s largest population base. Woodinville, a community of 11,000 across Lake Washington from Seattle, is far from the state’s vineyards, but it has long been home to Washington’s oldest and best-known winery. And thanks to the success of that producer — Chateau Ste. Michelle — more than 70 wineries and tasting rooms now crowd Woodinville. Ste. Michelle, which started in Seattle in 1934, opened its chateau in 1976. At the time, few understood the move to what was then a remote area of King County. But wine lovers came in droves, and today more than 300,000 visit Ste. Michelle each year for wine tasting, events and concerts. Across the street is

Columbia Winery, which was purchased by Gallo this summer. It started in the 1960s as Associated Vintners and has been one of the state’s best producers for its entire history. With this foundation, Woodinville has grown to a superb destination. Between new wineries that call Woodinville home and producers that have opened satellite tasting rooms, visitors will find more than 70 places to visit in the town. With the explosion of wineries in the past halfdecade, Woodinville’s lodging and restaurant scene also have developed. The Herbfarm Restaurant — arguably the Northwest’s finest dining experience — is across the street from

A short walk away is Purple Cafe, which succeeds with great food and wine. Here are a few wines from Woodinville producers we’ve tasted recently. n Pondera Winery 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $28: This big, bold wine opens with aromas of boysenberries,

black tea, blueberries, mint and fresh-out-of-theoven brownies. On the palate, it shows off rich flavors of black cherries, blackberries, blueberries and chocolate. It’s a big wine in every way. n Baer Winery 2009 Ursa, Columbia Valley, $39: A blend of Cabernet Franc (44 percent), Merlot (38 percent), Cabernet Sauvignon (9 percent) and Malbec, this brings hints of blueberry cobbler,

dried cranberry, violet and sweet oak tones of tobacco and black pepper. n Chateau Ste. Michelle 2008 Ethos Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $38: The attraction begins with a nose of black cherry extract and includes raspberry, root beer and woodruff, backed by humidor aromas. The presentation to the palate shows lovely extraction with juicy black cherry, black licorice, black olive and Belgian chocolate.

If you notice a bump on the side of your foot by the big toe, you probably have a bunion. The skin that covers the bunion may be red and tender, and wearing shoes may be painful. The pressure from the big toe pushing on the other toes may actually force the second toe to overlap the third toe. Untreated bunions can lead to bursitis and even arthritis. Add bunions to the list of problems that can be caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes, especially those that are too tight on the toes. Prevention is the best medicine, so wear shoes that give your feet enough space, and avoid high heels. If bunion pain is making it difficult to walk, you may need surgery. New patients welcome and seen on the same day. Early & late appointments available. Most insurances accepted.

HUNGRY?

People helping pets...pets helping people. Flynt is an 18 month medium haired grey tabby with

white on his feet, face and chest. He is a friendly boy who gets along with the other cats. He sits at the door waiting to say hello every morning and checks in quite often throughout the day. He came to us after hanging out at a local business for about a month. Once one of the employees started feeding him he was there everyday looking for lunch. Finally after the employee started putting out canned food he came around and let himself get caught. No one seemed to be looking for him so he was neutered, vetted and is now at the Pouslbo Petco waiting to meet his new family.

NEW homes make

cents!

Best Housing Market in Years

Although often we hear people say that they think that a “previously lived in” home, called a “resale” home in our industry, should be the best VALUE when compared to buying a new home, there are many arguments to the contrary.

Here are just a few of those arguments:

1. Choice/Selection/Personalization - Your new home is the biggest investment you will ever make - Why Not Have Your Home, Your Way? 2. Space - in addition to the typically more open floor plans found in newer homes - older homes don’t usually have the CLOSET or storage space that newer designs have. 3. New Home Design - the latest, greatest floor plan designs accommodate how people live TODAY, not yesterday. For example - do you ever use your formal dining room? 4. Less Maintenance - new homes have BRAND NEW operating systems, like plumbing, HVAC, etc...and usually don’t require maintenance until years down the road. 5. Energy Efficiency - New Homes (specifically those by The Jones Company that are ENERGY STAR Certiifed and National Green Building Standard Certified) are typically somewhere in the neighborhood of 42%+ more efficient* on energy bills! *varies by house and lifestyle, of course.

8. Warranty - New Homes usually have a Warranty. Meaning - usually you have 1 year to address any issues that don’t seem right with your builder - and they will come and fix them for you. No hiring contractors. In addition, for up to 10 years (our warranty is 1-10) you have coverage on any structural items. 9. Emotional Factor - The fact that you are the one and only person who’s ever lived in this home. It’s YOURS and yours alone...built for you...to your specifications. 10. Healthier Indoor Environment - New, GREEN homes have healthier indoor air quality and can improve your family’s health - especially if they have issues with asthma, allergies, etc. 11. Price - Although a new home may be slightly more on the front end - in the long run you’ll save $ on energy bills, operating costs, and maintenance while you live there! 12. Time - Your time is valuable. Would you rather spend your weekends doing maintenance - or enjoying your new home?

6. Modern Conveniences - New homes have the latest new appliances, new windows, new product technologies, and are often built in locations near the latest and greatest of everything.

13. Enhanced Electrical Systems for today’s lifestyles - now that we all have computers, microwaves, etc...some of the electrical systems found in older homes are simply not sophisticated enough to handle today’s modern technology.

7. New Homes are Built to CURRENT Codes - not the Codes of many years ago - meaning that some issues that could have been considered OK when it originally passed inspection are now no longer acceptable building standards.

So, in conclusion: the choice is up to you, but here are more than 10 great reasons why “NEW” and “NOW” are smart choices!
