band of dedicated teens from Enumclaw spent part of their summer on a mission trip to New Orleans, where they helped underserved citizens. Making the trip were youth from Trinity Lutheran, Calvary Presbyterian, Hope Lutheran, Mount Rainier Christian and New Life Foursquare churches. The 30 teens, ages 14 to 18, were accom-
panied by six adults. The teens helped with a multitude of activities like painting, yard work and simply taking time to sit down and visit with seniors at a nursing home. The volunteers divided into different groups. One worked at Arc, helping developmentally delayed adults sort Mardi Gras beads. Another group went to a nursing home, where they talked with residents. One group worked with APEX, a

THANK YOU To Donna Russell-Cook, president of St. Elizabeth Hospital: Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the staff of St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Franciscan Healthcare System for the wonderful care given to our mother, Anna Mae Jensen, during her recent stay at your facility. On July 19, our elderly mother fell and broke her hip at High Point Village, where she lives. She was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital at 11:30 p.m. I was with her in the emergency room and later after she was diagnosed with a broken hip and transferred to the third floor. The entire experience, from the emergency room through her admittance procedure, her surgery and her care following, was outstanding. The physicians, from Dr. Johnson in the emergency room to Dr. Bishop and Dr. Christian were most impressive, and the support staff were some of the best that I and my son, Kelley Jensen, have encountered. (Combined, we have over 54 years experience in the fire service and EMS fields so we do notice the difference in care quality.) Please take the time to post this compliment where deserving doctors and staff can see that their impact and performance is greatly appreciated by the family members of those that have received their care. I believe this area has yet to realize what the Franciscan Healthcare System has done for our small community. Please continue the great work that is being done and focus on these positive feedback remarks. Trimming trees sometimes a tricky business Trees often have significant monetary value. A large tree in a nice landscape may be worth thousands of dollars. This does not mean a homeowner could sell a tree for these prices, but there are situations where estimated values come into play. Certified arborists are often asked to appraise trees that are involved in disputes, have been dam-
aged by a car accident or were intentionally cut or mutilated. Two methods are used in valuing trees in a landscape situation: a replacement value or a “trunk formula” method. Timber values may be used in a true forest environment.
Replacement Value
If a landscape tree is of replaceable size, a value can

Often, the process is initiated by a homeowner or attorney who calls and states that a tree was cut or damaged by a neighbor, construction crew or a tree service. The damage may involve a certain portion or an entire tree. The final value estimate will be based upon the percentage of a tree that was damaged. A Douglas fir with a diameter of 18 inches at 4.5 feet above the ground that is in good condition, is located in a nice neighborhood and is important to the landscape may be appraised at $5,000 or more. A 24-inch tree may increase to more than $9,000. A low-growing, but small diameter Japanese lace leaf maple that is several years old, has many intricate twisted branches and is a prominent feature of a landscape may also be worth several thousands of dollars. There have been well publicized incidences where the removal of trees on public property in Seattle and the mutilation of dozens of trees in Lacey by a tree service have resulted in settlements of several thousands of dollars by the responsible parties.
Should a landscape tree be cut?
Now understanding that trees do have value, a homeowner may view a questionable tree from a different perspective. Obviously, the answer depends upon several factors other than its potential landscape value. Safety is a prime concern. Any tree that has a potential manmade target and is in good condition will generally be safe for several years. A tree that has some defect such as multiple tops, a crook in the trunk or visible decay ideally should be inspected by a professional. Certified arborists trained in hazard tree assessments are excellent sources for such evaluations. Note that it is important that a hazard tree assessment not be unduly influenced by someone who also is interested in selling tree removal services. Dennis Tompkins is a certified arborist, certified hazard tree assessor and Master Gardener from the Bonney Lake-Sumner area. He provides pruning, pest diagnosis, hazard tree evaluations, appraisals and other services. Contact him at 253 863-7469 or dlt@blarg.net. Website: evergreen-arborist.com.

Garden inspiration is global If you travel this summer, be sure to take note of great garden ideas from around the world. We’ve just returned from visiting great gardens in Russia, Sweden, Denmark and other parts of the Baltic. This northern European tour was so inspirational that at one point our group of travelhappy gardeners just broke out into song. Keep reading to find out why there was some happy but rotten singing in Denmark. The plant material and garden designs of northern Europe are easy to adapt to western Washington as the cool summers and long days make gardening in the north a celebration of long days but short summers – just like at home.
Inspiration: Russia
You may not have the expansive estate and army of gardeners that Peter the
Great enjoyed in his gardens but you can add a bit of Russian grandeur to your home landscape by choosing the same plant material as the great tsars. Long, cold winters did not stop the royalty from turning St. Petersburg into one of the Europe’s magnificent cities. Use yews as upright evergreens in your own garden and you won’t have to worry about deer, winds, drought or freezing winter temperatures. The English yew (Taxus baccata) comes in many varieties, some with new foliage that is a golden yellow (look for the variety Aurea) and a column-shaped yew (Fastigiata); both do well in western Washington. Yews can tolerate full shade and wet winter soil. Create your own grand garden vista by framing a mountain, sea or woodland view. Just place a yew on either side

The scoop on starlets Momma always told me: “It’s just as easy to marry a rich lady as it is to marry a poor one.” So, the moment I turned 21, I set off for Hollywood because I imagined that’s where most rich ladies were. And they’d be famous as well. You may not know this, but I spent my first 20 adult years living the high life in the glitter and flash of Beverly Hills. I became
Wally’s World Wally DuChateau Columnist
good friends with some of the most glamorous women in the world, including Angelina Jolie, Cher and Katie Holmes. This being the case, I’m
uniquely qualified to advise today’s young, adult males who may be on a similar quest. However, at the outset let me make one thing crystal clear: my mamma was mistaken. Marrying a rich woman, especially a famous one, is no easy task. The first thing you must do is buy or steal an expensive pair of sunglasses. Preferably Gucci. Before you arrive at Mulholland Drive, put them on and,
thereafter, rarely take them off. Starlets don’t like to make eye contact. Not even in the most intimate moments. Hollywood ladies never look quite as beautiful in
planters filled with fragrant but cold-hardy dianthus and snow-white daisies. From the thermal pools of the blue lagoon to the modern vibe of the vibrant downtown, Iceland is the new hot spot for adventure-seekers. Friend me on Facebook is you want to see photos of Icelandic trees wearing knitted scarves and a church that looks like a rocket ship.
Inspiration: Denmark
If you’ve ever enjoyed Disneyland, you need to thank the Danish. Walt Disney was so inspired by Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens that he flew home from Denmark and designed his famous theme park with Tivoli as his guide. This amusement park includes beautiful flower and water gardens and, at night, only oldfashioned, incandescent bulbs are still used to avoid a neon glow. Tivoli has the look of a fairy tale kingdom because, after all, it was Hans Christian Anderson real life as they do on the screen. Though there are some exception, female stars who have been seen without clothing in films – like Kate Winslet, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Natalie
who wrote his famous tales from Denmark – long before Disney turned them into movies. Americans visiting Tivoli gardens will recognize the well-lit façade of an Indiainspired temple, the backdrop for Walt Disney’s first ride “It’s a Small World” in a nod to Tivoli. It was while standing in front of this building that our group of travelers broke out into song. This was to the delight of the Europeans who at first thought we must be another street act paid to perform at the park. We really could have passed as professionals had we all been able to carry a tune and remember the words. That did not stop us from singing the song twice and applauding ourselves. “It’s a Small World” should play in your head every time you travel because gardens and traveling encourages us all to keep growing. First off I must apologize for being so late in sending a letter to the paper regarding the latest Creation Fest. I have been a vocal objector to the excessively loud bass amps, last year in particular. This year it was at least 75 to 80 percent better than last year. I knew it could be done and that there was no reason the bass amps had to be so totally loud, especially at night. This year, in my opinion, the music was done at a very acceptable level and a sincere thank you to whoever made that happen. Lou Kitchen Enumclaw

School made wrong call when hiring new coach As many of you probably know by now, Enumclaw High School has hired a new football coach. What most of you probably don’t know, however, is the significant impact that hire had on another staff member. I believe it is only fair for the citizens of Enumclaw, and the students at EHS, to know the full story. First of all, please understand that this letter is not intended to be a “bashing” or “gripe” session. As an EHS grad, multi-sport athlete and a passionate football fan, I am excited for the possibilities that lie ahead for the football program. In fact, I believe the new football coach will create a new and exciting atmosphere and I wish him only the best. However, I am a firm believer that preferential
treatment for one individual and unjust treatment for another should never be tolerated or accepted. By now you may be wondering what I am referring to, so let me explain and then you can judge for yourself. A few months ago, EHS needed a new football coach. Like any other school, they posted the job opening to generate a candidate pool. The key here is that they posted the job as a “football coaching position,” with the possibility of teaching positions opening at a later date. There was no teaching position attached to the coaching position. Most of the current teachers logically assumed that if a new teacher/coach were to be hired that he would fill in one of the vacant teaching positions in the district, such as history at EHS or

Want to bring about change? Do you know the type of city government you have in your city? Is it council-manager, or mayorcouncil? Never heard of these differences? These governmental forms are important because each operates differently. Of the cities in the reach of The Courier-Herald, only Covington and Maple Valley have a councilmanager form of government. The council appoints a city manager who runs the city on a day-to-day basis. There is a mayor, but that person is a member of the council, elected by the council. The mayor only presides at council meetings and does the ceremonial duties for the city.
In Focus Rich Elfers Columnist
The rest of the cities have mayor-council forms of government. Let’s focus on this form to help you understand how it runs. Knowing how your city government works is important because in order to get things done, you must understand its structure.
The mayor in these cities is the executive, voted into office directly by the constituents. A mayor has extensive powers to govern. The mayor appoints a city manager who runs the city on a day-to-day basis. She hires the city manager and the department heads such as police, fire and public works with the approval of the council. These heads may be fired without council approval, however. The city council’s job is to act as the legislature. Members vote on laws called ordinances. In cities of more than 5,000 people there are

I was wondering the other day: does Niccolo Machiavelli roll in his grave every time someone uses his name to describe acts of deceit and blind self-interest? The Italian lawyer and statesman’s most famous work, “The Prince,” is a guide to consolidating and keeping power under a monarchy. It was an amoral treatise that shouted out loud, “It is better to be feared than loved.” Many a world history teacher has pointed to this pamphlet as an example of the repellent and cruel nature of Italian city-state politics; Niccolo’s simpering resumé to the freshly politically empowered Lorenzo de Medici. The problem is Daniel Nash “The Prince” wasn’t Staff Writer much of a resumé at all, in historical context. Outside of that book, almost every entry in Machiavelli’s bibliography dealt with the construction and management of republican governments and Machiavelli was himself an avid participant in the republic sandwiched between Medici dynasties. When the Medici retook power of Florence, Machiavelli was arrested, tortured, and exiled, never to return home until after his death. “The Prince” was written mere months after his banishment, and circulated privately among friends – indeed, Machiavelli’s only work to see publication in his lifetime was his “Art of War.”

At this time, mines were often named for the section of land (being one square mile) in which they were located. Since this mine was located in Section 11, Township 21 North, Range 6 East, it was later called Mine No. 11. is the secret key to success. On the one hand, he might think if he could only master this shadow art, he would have riches and power beyond his wildest dreams. Strangers will be charmed by his graces, coworkers will be cowed by his power, women will fall at his feet, and they will all be puppets on the strings of his words. And those words will be law. On the other hand, his faith in manipulation also acts as a shield protecting him from his own failures. He might look at a successful man and scoff, “Well, he clearly had to lie and cheat to get where he is. At least I have my morals!” If he’s entrenched enough in his beliefs, it will never occur to him that the man may have achieved his station through hard work, honesty, prudence and a welcome dose of luck. I believe, given the choice,
the majority of people will associate and do repeat business with people who regularly demonstrate those qualities. None of which is to say that manipulation never works, or that it’s entirely unnatural. Probably every toddler experiments with lying to get their way; I once convinced my kindergarten teacher I was allergic to every food but peanut butter sandwiches. But it’s one thing to lie every once in a while, and quite another to make it a lifestyle. That’s because the human brain is built for truth. It has to be. We rely on our brain to process reality as it unfolds, and it does that most efficiently when it accepts all sensory information as the truth by default. If your hand touches a hot stove, you don’t stop to ponder what it means. Rooting out lies is a conscious effort;

a single act of lying can cause your brain to stumble over itself; chronic dishonesty can result in a constant feedback loop of stomachaches, anxiety and guilt as your brain desperately tries to tell you “Something isn’t right here.” The best liars, sociopaths/ psychopaths, are able to do it because something in their brain is broken. They don’t have empathy for other people and they don’t anticipate consequence. They can be very attractive and charismatic – especially to youth or those otherwise inexperienced with liars – because their words seem to offer a perfect world free from pain and frustration. (A close cousin of the liar, the selfpromoter, can’t quite be considered a sociopath. He’s just annoying). But these people aren’t meant to be admired, they’re meant to be pitied and kept at arm’s length. Bob Hare,

Dr. Martha Stout, the author of “The Sociopath Next Door,” estimates higher at 4 percent, meaning one in 25 people is a sociopath. For prison populations, the estimate jumps to one in four. THE BOURNE LEGACY

How likely is it, really, that a republican advocate whose arms had been dislocated just months prior on the orders of an autocrat, would write a book full of morally questionable advice, dedicate it to said autocrat, and mean it sincerely? Isn’t it more likely that Machiavelli attached Medici’s name to repellant subject matter to make Medici repellant by association? The interpretation of the book as satire – or deceit – enjoyed popularity among 18th century Enlightenment scholars, before receding into a staunch minority. Today, the book is taught sincerely in schools, read sincerely by some who aspire to power, and emulated or referenced sincerely by writers like Robert Greene, the author of instructional guides to amorality like “The 48 Laws of Power” and “The 33 Strategies of War.” Why? Three reasons: • Tone has a way of losing itself in writing. If I can be baffled by the subtext of an
email I received five minutes ago, it’s a sure bet I’ll miss subtext in a book separated by five centuries and a language. • If Machiavelli’s goal was, in fact, satire, he sure sells it. The voice of the book is dead serious and if there is humor hidden in there, it would have to be hidden deep in the context. • It takes two to tango, meaning people read “The Prince” seriously because they want that to be the case. If read sincerely, it’s one of the earliest self-help books about achieving and maintaining upward mobility. Ignoring that the self-help in question is for tyrants, it’s actually very tuned in to the American Dream. Every ambitious person wants to be boss in at least one realm of his life, but not everyone is. To someone who feels powerless, it’s seductive to believe that manipulation

Upon meeting a starlet, it’s absolutely critical that you make a good impression during the first 30 seconds or you’ll immediately be cast aside. Worse yet, if you make them uncomfortable for more than 15 seconds, they’ll move on to someone else – and
there’s always someone else who’s anxious to meet them. Stars like to talk about themselves, so whenever there’s a conversational lull – a terribly awkward situation you should avoid at all costs – try asking them about their childhood. When they don’t know how to answer a question, which frequently happens, starlets will often giggle and lean forward to reveal more

times, there is no source of such understanding cited, it is up to us to figure it out on our own. Recently I have heard (and read) several sharp criticisms of the Bible, even some accusations that clearly have failed to accurately portray the Bible’s content. There was a time when I read the Bible through with the sole intention of finding every possible flaw in order to argue against it. It took a while. It’s a big book. And it didn’t take me where I thought I wanted to go. I found myself standing in a very different place, seeing myself through a different perspective and the world changed around me. I changed, too. Before you dismiss this book as so many do without ever truly investigating it for themselves, I would pray that you would test it for yourself. It’s God’s book and it is meant for all of us; it isn’t the private property of churches.

It is not a new book, yet it remains among the best-selling books worldwide every year. It is available in many languages and many editions. It has been studied by scholars and abused by charlatans. It has been translated into ornate and extraordinary literary styles and rendered into colloquial speech. It has been both revered and ridiculed. Of course, you have figured out (me being a preacher) that I am talking about the Bible. There was a time when the Bible was restricted reading – ordinary people weren’t trusted to handle it correctly – but that time has long passed. For more than 500 years now, the Bible has been accessible to “regular” folks and I wonder if long familiarity has led to neglect and complacency. Yet I hear a constant reference to spiritual thought, a frequent interest in finding meaning and purpose in life. But many

seven members on the council. Only Black Diamond has a five-member council due to its size. (It may be changing its governmental structure to a council-manager form due to the disputed planned building development.) There are also resolutions. They are different from ordinances because they are statements of intent, not laws like ordinances. Resolutions are formal documents voted on by the council. They are meant for the council to give direction to the city administration. Resolutions do not carry the power of law, nor do they require two public readings in two council meetings with the opportunity for constituent input (as ordinances do) before they are voted on. An example of a resolution was the Enumclaw council decision to end the equestrian theme for the Expo Center. The mayor and her staff create the city budget. It is then studied and discussed by the council which makes changes as it sees fit. Usually these discussions occur in the fall of each year. The mayor can set direction for the city, but it’s the council that has to approve that direction. In actuality, most power resides with the council, not the mayor, because it has the final say regarding where the city is going and how projects will be paid for. If you want to bring about change in the city, the most effective way is to take a twofold approach: First, go before the council during the public comment period and state your views. The better organized and the more articulate you are, and the bigger the

group you represent, the more influence you will have on the council. Persistence in your goals is also mandatory. This can be done through phone calls and emails, and regular attendance at committee meetings. The greater the persistence and patience, the more likely you will succeed. Bringing about governmental change is a long and laborious process, and it is meant to be to get the best results. Be careful, though. Angry, emotional comments or letters tend to turn off the council rather than help your cause. Trying to bully the council or the administration is also counterproductive. It’s better to be as rational, logical and reasoned as possible. Citing examples of how other cities have done things is an effective way to convince them. Secondly, convince the mayor that your ideas will benefit the city. Having a clear plan with mayoral support is very important. And having a large group of constituents supporting a plan helps the mayor attain her goals. Since most cities have the strong mayorcouncil form of government, it is vitally important to understand how it works and how you should act to bring about change in your city. As I have stated before, it only takes a few dedicated and organized people to affect the direction of a city. The real power of government resides in an active and involved citizenry. If we don’t like the way the government is acting, the real burden is upon us, the voters, to bring about change.

physical education at EMS. Unfortunately this is not what happened. After the interview process ended, the district personnel hired their football coach based upon who they thought was the best fit as a coach, not based upon who was the best fit as a teacher/coach. Here is the twist. The district now had to “find” a teaching position for the new coach. The district’s answer was to give this teacher, with the least amount of seniority, one of the most coveted teaching positions, high school P.E. and weight training. The result of this decision was that a current P.E. teacher, who is considered “Highly Qualified,” with 14 years of experience, 10 years at EHS, who had been the department head for nearly five years, who had always received exceptional evaluations from her administration and who is highly respected by the students and parents, was forced to give up her teaching position. The original plan was to move this teacher into a full-time history position, a position where she is not rated as “Highly Qualified,” and has very little teaching experience. After hours of discussion and evaluation, it was finally agreed that this would not be best for student learning and the district offered an alternative option, physical education at the middle school. Even though this is a much more appropriate position for this teacher, it unfortunately means she must leave EHS, a place she
has spent the last 10 years striving for excellence, building relationships with kids and parents, and being an exemplary teacher. With the challenges that today’s schools, educators and students face, the focus of education must remain on doing what is best for students. Let me say it again, focus on what is best for students, not football players or basketball players or band members or any other specific group. Sports are extracurricular activities that teach vital lessons to students, but they are still “extra.” Coaching positions are supplemental jobs that are demanding and challenging, but they are still supplemental positions. Decisions about who is best to teach which topics should not be based upon who will coach which activity or sport. I was fortunate enough to have great teachers throughout my high school and collegiate years, and I continue to learn from many of them today. One of the greatest lessons I ever learned is that sometimes you have to do what is right even when it’s the hardest thing to do. There are precious few moments in our lives that will define who we are as a person and a professional. We must embrace those moments and strive to do what is right, simply for the sake of doing what is right. I hope that when those moments are placed before me I have the knowledge to recognize them and the grace and integrity to act accordingly. These are the lessons we need to continue to teach our students. Jon Roberts Buckley

Two Great Organizations Dedicated to Helping Kids consists of three organizations, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle Children’s Research Institute and Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation. Children’s Hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, surgical, rehabilitative, behavioral, emergency and outreach services. It has 254 beds and a staff of over 1,200 professionals, including over 700 doctors. In 2011, it had over 300,000 patient visits, including visits to off-site clinics. Seattle Children’s Research Institute has nine major centers with over 350 investigators researching hundreds of diseases and disorders in fields such as cancer, genetics, immunology, pathology, infectious disease, injury prevention and bioethics. Researchers in the centers collaborate with each other and with their colleagues at partner institutions including the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Doernbecher Children’s Hospital began serving patients in 1926 in Portland and is now affiliated with Oregon Health and Sciences University. It has clinics in several communities
around the state of Oregon and one in Vancouver, Washington. Like Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Doernbecher is involved in research which is quickly translated into new treatments. Specific areas of research include cardiology,
neurology, weight regulation, metabolism, oncology and stem cell research. Both Children’s Hospital in Seattle and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital believe that children should have compassionate, family-centered care. Both are at the
forefront of pediatric medical research so that they can advance new treatments in their quests to prevent, treat and eliminate pediatric disease. You can join QFC in supporting these great institutions by donating at any check stand using the

In a perfect world every child would be happy and healthy. Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t work that way and not all children are able to enjoy good health. But fortunately, many of those young people who have health issues have two premiere northwest institutions to turn to for some of the best pediatric care in the country. They are Children’s Hospital in Seattle and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Oregon. QFC is proud to support these two great organizations as our charities of the month for August. Each is a leader in providing superior patient care and using research to advance new treatments. Children’s Hospital in Seattle has been treating children regardless of race, religion, gender or a family’s ability to pay since 1907 and provided over $100 million in uncompensated care in 2011. It has consistently been ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the U.S. and serves as a pediatric and adolescent referral center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Seattle Children’s

Councilman Reed headed to trial, son sentenced after plea By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Pierce County Superior Court proceedings against Buckley’s father-son Reed duo are headed in different directions. While the case against Travis Reed was finalized recently with a guilty plea and sentencing, father Randy Reed – a sitting member of the Buckley City Council – is slated for trial later this month. Randy Reed, 54, is staring at charges stemming from allegations of inappropriate sexual con-
tact with a young girl. According to a Superior Court spokeswoman, his trial is to begin Aug. 23. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Reed with firstdegree child rape and first-degree child molestation. Charging papers allege Reed inappropriately touched a 7-year-old numerous times and had the girl touch him. The alleged incidents covered a period of many months during 2011. Reed entered a not guilty plea in September. The girl is the daughter of a woman who was dating Travis

The people residing in the Lower Ninth Ward are among the poorest in New Orleans and were hit the hardest by Hurricane Katrina.
went to work with a bottling company for Pepsi. Eventually he was offered a job in the marketing department. “I told them I didn’t know anything about marketing,” Gray said. “They said ‘You complain and you have an opinion about everything.’ It was a test by fire.” He passed the test and was promoted to senior national sales manager. “The funny thing is I applied for Coke first, but I was hired by Pepsi,” Gray said. “So I got to haunt those (Coke) guys for the rest of my career.” He has been married to his wife, Peggy, 40 years and the couple has two grown children. His son Jake works in Portland and daughter Monica and her husband live in Enumclaw with their three chil-
Reed, 31. The mother, daughter and Travis Reed were living in the Buckley home owned by Randy Reed at the time of the alleged incidents. A week after his father was charged, Travis Reed sent text messages to the mother, offering to pay $200 per month until the daughter’s 18th birthday if she would agree to drop the charges against Randy Reed. The offer would have totaled $12,000. The girl’s mother apparently was adamant in her refusal. Charging papers indicate she told Travis Reed she “could not, nor would not, drop the charges against his father.” Instead, the mother contacted a Buckley Police Department detective, who matched text messages on phones owned by the woman
and the younger Reed. Travis Reed offered a guilty plea July 19, admitting to a charge of tampering with a witness. He was sentenced to six months of community custody (probation) and ordered him not to have contact with the alleged victim.
Enumclaw man charged with vehicular homicide • An April crash that left one young man dead and another seriously injured has resulted in criminal charges against the Enumclaw driver. Kyle J. According to Rismiller, many houses ward remain boarded up and retain water marks left behind by the hurricane. “I learn now that I should live life more graciously, because those victims of Hurricane Katrina had to wake up each morning and know that everything that they ever knew is gone, while we just wake up and take everything for granted,” Paige Perez, a member of the Trinity Lutheran youth group, said. Local teens were impressed with the Southern hospitality in Houston, where the youth group landed before making the drive to New Orleans. “Every now and then, the GPS didn’t work while traveling to New Orleans, but

we could just stop off and they would give us instructions on how to get to that point,” Will Sathre recalled. “There was just a lot of instances where people would just start up conversations for us. The southern hospitality was kind of a culture shock because it seems like we don’t have it up here.” Many of the Enumclaw youth felt connected to the residents of New Orleans. Music is a big part of Zach McCowin’s life and when he learned that Troy, a resident of New Orleans, lost all of his records in the hurricane, McCowin instantly felt sympathetic. “He lost all of his Flaming Lips records, which was our favorite band,” McCowin said.
dren, 16, 8, and 18 months – all girls. Gray said he moved to Enumclaw in 2002 because of he and wife’s love of horses. His wife would come to the Plateau area to ride, which is how the couple ended up moving to Enumclaw. The couple has a quarter horse and a Kentucky mountain saddle horse. They are active members of the Back Country Horseman of Washington. Gray said he still drinks Pepsi, but admitted when he faced a blind test with the his bosses at Pepsi in Hawaii he couldn’t tell the difference. “I told them I could tell neither cup had Jack Daniel’s in it, but they said I had to pick. I picked the wrong one of course and they never let me live it down,” Gray said.
Aug. 17. According to State Patrol reports and court charging documents, Podolak was behind the wheel of a 2006 Chevrolet pickup during the early-morning hours of April 22. The pickup was traveling on state Route 162 near Orting when it left the road, rolled, struck a power pole and came to rest in a ditch. Brandon Duprie of Enumclaw was killed in the crash and a second passenger required surgery for a spinal injury. Podolak escaped with a fractured arm. It is alleged that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. Charging documents indicate Podolak was traveling in excess of 60 miles per hour when he came upon a sharp corner in the vicinity of Voight’s Creek.
