elebrating its 150th anniversary, the King County Fairs opens its gates Thursday morning. The four-day event will operate from noon to 10 p.m. the first two days, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Billed as the longest-running fair west of the Mississippi River, the event offers a little bit of everything. Now operated by Universal Fairs of Cordova, Tenn., the fair will play host to

plenty of live music, traditional carnival rides, food vendors and commercial booths, barns filled with livestock and plenty of other displays. Special attractions include pig races four times daily and mutton bustin’ competition (small kids attempting to ride sheep) three times each day. Alex Zerbe will put on his family-friendly comedy show at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. all four days and ventriloquist Jerry Breeden, another familyfriendly favorite, will perform at 2, 4 and 6 p.m daily. Rodeo adds excitement to Expo Center grounds A professional rodeo will add to the excitement of the King County Fair. While the rodeo and fair will be staged at the same time at the same place, they are separate events. Admission to one will not work for both attractions. The Enumclaw Pro Rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday. Gates open one hour before the action gets under way. Organizers are bringing back the rodeo, which was a fair staple until a decade ago, as a way to energize the fair and, turn, help local 4-H and FFA youth. Youngsters need a local fair to qualify for the state’s biggest fair in Puyallup and the hope is a rodeo will provide enough interest to keep the Enumclaw fair operating. The local event is affiliated with the Northwest Pro Rodeo Association and is attracting competitors from throughout the Pacific Northwest, northern California and British Columbia. They will compete for $15,000 of added prize money.

A Scottish Celebration

Buckley’s City Council members approved two jail contracts during their July 24 council meeting, indicating that—for the time being, at least—the city is moving forward with the Buckley jail’s future in mind. Police Chief James Arsanto presented the council with on-call (no guaranteed bed space) contracts with the city of Federal Way and the state Department of Corrections, at a gain of $57 and $60, respectively, per bed per night. Federal Way was one of two cities to drop business with the Buckley jail and contract with the King County SCORES facility. Arsanto cautioned that a contract with Federal Way didn’t necessarily mean the jail would see prisoners from Federal Way. “It looks like Federal Way’s been going back to all the cities it contracted with in case of overflow,” he said, adding that SCORES was presently looking at 300 occupied beds in a 1,000-bed facility. “I do expect DOC will send us some prisoners, though.”

Christopher

HURST An Independent Voice for the 31st District Jobs, Trust & Integrity. August 1, 2012

A Strong Leader During his career as a 25-year veteran police officer and commander of a 15-city Homicide/Violent Crimes Task Force, Chris saw a disheartening amount of crime that resulted from not solving the problems with our education system. Chris believes that wise investments in education are the best insurance against kids becoming involved in drugs, gangs and crime. As Chairman of the House Public Safety Committee, he passed tough laws to keep sex and violent offenders locked up. Rated “Outstanding” by the non-partisan Municipal League in 2010.

A Loyalty to Local Businesses His wife of 34 years, April, is a small business owner. She owns April’s Pet Salon on Cole Street in Enumclaw, where she grooms cats and dogs. Chris understands small businesses, and when Workers Comp and Unemployment Insurance rates were about to rise last year, he overhauled these programs in Olympia to avoid rate increases which would have killed jobs in our local communities. Chris and April know firsthand that small businesses are the economic foundations of our local communities. Chris also improved our Buy Washington statutes that will give businesses in our state a competitive advantage, and because he believed it was important to share in the sacrifice in these tough economic times, he cut his own legislative pay. Rated “Highly Qualified” by the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce and Endorsed by the AWB.

A Commitment to Returning Veterans Andrew Hurst, their son, is still in the Army, but is back home after serving three tours of duty in the Middle East as a member of the 173rd Airborne Infantry, where 69 soldiers from his unit were killed in action. Their nephew was also killed in Iraq, so you can understand why veteran’s issues are important to the Hurst family, and are ever-present in their minds. Chris passed important laws in Olympia to help our returning vets.

Buckley teen sentenced By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

Buckley resident Ryan R. Bogue was sentenced Thursday for fleeing an automobile accident, leaving a friend dead on the side of the road. During an emotional time in Pierce County Superior Court, Bogue was handed a sentence of three years, five months. The presiding judge looked to the lower end of the sentencing range when making his ruling. Bogue, who was 18 at the time of the Aug. 3, 2011, crash, had pleaded guilty May 30 to both vehicular homicide and failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving a death. Bogue was behind the wheel of a 2009 Pontiac G6 shortly after 1 a.m., traveling east on 112th Street East. His vehicle veered from the two-lane road that runs parallel to state Route 410 and struck a power pole. His 17-year-old passenger, Traevon Norton, was ejected from the vehicle. With his friend either near death or already deceased, Bogue fled the scene. Instead of calling 911, he called his sister and asked to be picked up in Buckley and taken to

Enumclaw’s St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he could be treated for injuries sustained in the accident. A passerby came upon the scene of the accident and notified police, who soon located Bogue at St. Elizabeth. According to charging papers, Bogue had alcohol in his blood stream, along with controlled substances found in prescribed depressants and the active ingredient found in marijuana. A whiskey bottle was reportedly found in his car. Papers indicate Bogue told police he had consumed three beers, was traveling about 45 miles per hour and crashed because he swerved to miss three deer in the roadway. A different story was told by investigators who downloaded information from the airbag control module in the Pontiac. It showed Bogue was driving 86 miles per hour five seconds before the crash; the car’s brake was activated three seconds before the accident; and the vehicle slowed to 70 just two seconds before the crash when the anti-lock brake system activated. At the time of the impact, investigators determined, the car was traveling at 57 mph in an area where the posted speed limit is 35.

Rotary news and notes My to-do list loomed over me like a dark cloud as I approached the Rotary weekly lunch meeting July 5 Our speaker for the day was Corey Johnson from Imagine Scholar and I felt terrible telling him I would likely walk out before he finished. Imagine my surprise when I could not tear myself away, but instead stayed around to find out more about the organization he founded. We learned that Imagine Scholar provides unique, personalized education to promising youth in South Africa’s disad-

Jail FROM 1 A fund transfer on the agenda tangentially related to the jail issue failed on a 3-3 tie vote; Councilman Randy Reed was excused absent and state law prevents the mayor from breaking a tie when it comes to votes on financial matters. With the city facing a potential $200,000 deficit by the end of the year, City Administrator Dave Schmidt drafted a bill that would allow a $200,000 transfer to the general fund split evenly between the police and fire equipment reserve funds. Such a transfer would ensure the city could make payroll, especially considering tax revenue probably wouldn’t come in until October, Schmidt said.

vantaged Nkomazi region. We also heard stories of hope about their intensive four year mentorship program and the impact it has had on the lives of the youth they serve. One compelling benefit of belonging to Rotary is the high caliber speakers presenting at our weekly Thursday lunch meetings. To give you an idea of July 19 was Bill Finkbeiner, candidate for lieutenant governor. July 26 was Sarah Johnson sharing about The Genesis Project. We’d love to have you join us at an upcoming meeting. Feel free to email me at athenadean@ gmail.com or call at 425-241-0265 for more information.

Councilwoman Cristi Boyle Barrett disagreed with the motion to authorize the fund transfer, surmising the intent to be to reimburse the reserve funds from a future sale of the city gas utility—if that sale even proved possible. It was a short-term fix for a long term problem, she said. “The choice to borrow reserves to continue to operate city services… I think you’re not going to make it in the long run,” she said. “Yes, it may be better to house (prisoner) citizens at home—better for our officers’ transport and better for making court dates— but not at the expense of our reserve funds.” Councilman Bryan Howard countered that the reserve funds may not have been able to accrue had it

not been for jail and dispatch services, and likened the debate to a chicken-andegg discussion. But not transferring the money meant risking city jobs, he said. “That point, specifically, I take issue with,” Boyle Barrett said. “If you balance the budget with reserve funds… we may have to lose an officer.” “But it doesn’t necessarily have to be a patrol position,” Howard said. “It sounds like no matter which direction we go in right now, we’re talking about people’s jobs,” Councilman James Montgomery said. Mayor Pat Johnson brought the discussion back on topic shortly before the tie vote. Now, city staff must find another path to balancing the budget, Schmidt said.

The blessing of freedom is choice My spiritual meditations often take me to the character of God . . . I contemplate what he must be like . . . something wonderful occurs in my life and I think God is wonderful and loves me very much . . . something overtakes me that’s uncomfortable or painful, and I wonder if God even cares about any detail of my life, let alone loves me . . . and then tragedy strikes . . . something we could not avert, or something caused by another human that is totally preventable . . . if that someone would have made different choices . . . and now I’m back to what the character of God must be like . . . When a tragedy of any sort shows up, the question most often posed is something like: How could God allow something like this, or, why would God allow something like this? I’ve heard many responses over these questions and I’ve made my share. One response I stay away from is to in any way suggest that there must be some divine reason behind it,

NEWS BRIEFS Musicals will take the stage Imagination Theatre’s summer workshop is in full swing, preparing to present “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Jr.” and “Footloose, The Musical.” The workshop hosts youth from the age of 5 to 19 for four to five weeks. In that time, the youth must learn songs, dances, create sets, gather props, learn lines and put together a show from start to finish. “It is so wonderful how much the youth are supported in Enumclaw. Whether it be sports, the arts or 4-H, it is obvious that Enumclaw cares about the youth,”

Imagination Theatre Director Stu Johnson said. “We have incredible group of parents who are always willing to lend a hand wherever needed.” “The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Jr” is the story of a boy who wished on a star to do great things all over the world. The catch? He was made flat in order to do it. The curtain goes up at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. There also will be a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday. “Footloose, The Musical” is a classic tale of teen rebellion and repression. What do kids do when rock ‘n’ roll and dancing are made illegal? What if God has given us the freedom to make choices to the delight and pleasure and beauty and benefit of our friends and family and neighbors and strangers – and, yes, even our enemies? I don’t engage in road rage because you cut me off in traffic, but I engage myself in road rage – or any other uncontrolled emotional outburst – simply because I’ve not learned to discipline myself and get over some little irritation or hurt or slight. I’m not saying I like it that God has given you the freedom to choose, but I certainly don’t want him curtailing my choices. I’d also like to think that I can get into such tune with his spirit that I always make good choices and that my choices get better. But, then, I make some ridiculous choice that seemed reasonable at

The sad part of choices is that all too often many other people have to pay for the choices of such a few irresponsible individuals. And when the legal system is just – not vengeful but just – then the evil will be curtailed – never eradicated, but at least slowed down. Back to my meditation . . . so, I learn to be a worshipper. I don’t just worship, but I make it a way of my intimate life. Stirring memories Letters of Dad, Chryslers American culture quick I spotted a 1966 Chrysler Newport in Enumclaw the other day. Suddenly I was back in the mid-1960s walking around town daydreaming. My dad loved Chryslers and always drove a Chrysler Newport. I remember one had a push-button automatic, which I thought was the coolest thing on earth at the time. I had very low standards that I faithfully maintained. My dad was employed at the White River We y e r h a e u s e r mill and worked our farm until we moved into town. Dennis Box Every time the Editor mill shut down due to a strike or something and Dad had some extra time on his hands we seemed to end up with newer Chrysler. I remember Dad and I would take a ride to Auburn for no particular reason and wind up at Brewer Chrysler. We took the ‘66 Newport all over Montana, where went most summers. Dad was raised from about 10 to 16 in St. Ignatius, Mont. His mother had died of the Spanish influenza on Dec. 24, 1918, and Dad ended up in the Children’s

I am stunned, outraged and sickened by the massacre that took place in the Colorado movie theater. I took a communications class in college and the teacher’s premise was that the culture contributed 50 percent to a criminal committing a crime. I disagreed at the time. Now I agree. I don’t think it was written into the Constitution that we need to know the resumé of the despicable killer and his or her video of how they planned it. Run-in showed how our society lacks tolerance

Urging all to vote against East Pierce levy request

why they are the only fire district in Pierce County Voter pamphlet asking for an excess levy. It’s an easy answer – management. Go back to basic fire and EMS service and get all citizens receiving the service, paying one tax. Some citizens receive the same service without paying any taxes, others pay a smaller tax. If everyone paid equal share, the district would not need to be asking for some citizens to pay $2.38 in 2013 and $2.43 in 2014 (per $1,000 of assessed valuation). This tells the story they have no plans to bring the district to one tax levy. I believe in helping my neighbor but we have carried those areas for 10 to 12 years; now is time to stop service or have them annex into the district and pay the $2 per thousand. The cities of Sumner, Edgewood and District 12 and 20 gave their station,

They irritate me because the way they are used is incorrect in their historic context. Labeling people by using these terms puts individuals into boxes and diminishes their humanity – making them something less than human. Labeling someone by using these terms turns the object of these attacks into two-dimensional caricatures, rather than complex humans we all are. As a high school social studies teacher I often had to deal with this labeling issue when I taught the political spectrum to my students; the

political spectrum refers to a range of political ideas from different parties. I’d like to explain these three terms from a social science perspective. Socialism: All societies have to deal with balancing competing values: what’s good for the individual versus what’s good for society – socialism.

Healthy societies are those that allow for both individualism and socialism. As an example, unions were formed to fight the abuses of big business and the legalization of unions eventually evened the playing field. Unions helped to raise wages for all workers, creating a large, stable, middle class. Because of socialistic laws we now have state and federal highways, public schools, police and fire departments, Social Security and Medicare. For most Americans, these “socialistic” programs are popular and accepted because they give to society what individuals cannot do for themselves.

100 Years on the Plateau! This photo shows a typical water level entrance to a coal mine along the banks of the Green River below the town of Franklin. Because the mine rails have been torn up and the coal car appears in a state of disrepair, this was an abandoned mine opening at the time of this 1910 photo. While there are very few abandoned coal mine openings remaining in this area, no one should ever enter into an old mine due to the extreme dangers within. equipment and property to District 22 (EPF&R) so why are three-fourths paying full bore and the other quarter paying a lesser amount, and will not vote on the levy or see increase in their taxes. Yet the district is paying for full maintenance and insurance on all fire stations in the covered area. Some stations are called unmanned, which means they are manned by volunteer; four years ago there were 80-plus volunteers now most have retired or just quit because of the way they were treated. East Pierce Fire and Rescue was formed because the area became a bedroom community and the volunteers were gone most of the day, leaving daytime calls unanswered. Now, volunteers are gone by union choice so there can be more six figure jobs and only work eight days a month. Each staffed station is equipped with bedrooms, large screen TV and recliners. When the average person goes to work he is paid by the hour but a firefighter is paid for a 24-hour shift with scheduled eight hours of training and meeting Monday through Friday. Saturday Sunday usually do not have training schedule those days have a couple

hours checking equipment and cleaning house and then wait for 911 call, and there are days and nights with no sleep, then there are days with no 911 calls, too. The average firefighter wage is $60,000 to $180,000 plus benefits (sick leave, vacation, medical for all members of your family and retirement). Well over 85 percent of the budget is wages, like five chiefs bringing home a large sixfigure check each year; then the commissioner receives a fee. The Enumclaw CourierHerald newspaper had several articles on this same subject about King County Fire District 28 and when a citizen learned all the details and that the chief’s salary was raised to $180,000 which is comparable to East Pierce Fire and Rescue, and with all the feedback from the citizen, their commission decided not to run a levy and is maintaining service with less than $2 per $1,000. In years gone by, fire budgets were based on $1, then Emergency Medical Service added 25 to 50 cents, then paid personal added another 50 cents, for a total of $2 plus the fire department collects revenue from insurance companies for transporting citizens. Zionism column ruffles feathers The following is in response to Rich Elfers’ column in The Courier-Herald, July 11. I am a Christian Zionist who made the decision to be one based on JudeoChristian values and beliefs. I’m sure you’ve heard other Christians quote the Bible verse about those who bless Israel will be blessed and those that curse Israel will be cursed in return. Well, I believe that because I believe the Bible is God’s instruction manual and that God doesn’t lie. God is not going to consult you before he moves, but he will judge you as you judge others. Maybe you think your opinion matters so much, but in reality you are just a speck on the earth, and why should God listen to you? When you can create the universe and all life in it, then you can tell your creation who you are and how they should live. In the meantime, you live in

a universe that you did not create, and the creator has already told you who he is and given you his unchangeable rules for living in it. Should you choose not to comply, he will treat you like the disobedient child you are. And in case you didn’t know, Jesus is Jewish. He did not convert to Christianity. Christians are adopted into God’s family, and that family is Jewish. Barbara Stowe Raymond, Wash.

Reform is coming to Black Diamond “There’s an elephant in the room”…we don’t trust the mayor, said a speaker at the Black Diamond City Council meeting last week, and loud applause broke out in the standing-roomonly crowd. But there was another animal in the room, the gorilla: the YarrowBay developments. YarrowBay still threatens the quality of life of every citizen of Black Diamond and every other community within 15 miles, too. That’s why the voters threw out the old pro-Yarrow Bay council and elected new leadership by 75 percent of the vote last year with the goal of saving Black Diamond from, at a minimum: overwhelming traffic, financial risk,

the kids’ future education, environmental destruction, and loss of the rural, small town atmosphere as identified for the former council (same mayor) by the hearing examiner (twice) and hundreds of concerned people through public testimony, repeatedly. In January, the new City Council began with forward-thinking ideas, but the mayor is an obstinate apologist for YarrowBay and the old discredited council. She and her staff continued with business as usual. Now the council has been listening to the vast majority of residents and has moved decisively to put on November’s ballot a

proposition to remove the mayor and create a more responsive form of government. The city administrator who now reports to the mayor will be replaced by a city manager reporting to the full council. The reform that the people voted for last year will at last be achieved. Judith Carrier King County

CORNER FROM 6 Home Society orphanage in Helena. He was adopted by Oscar Box and moved with him to St. Ignatius. Nearly every summer when I was young we would pile into the Chrysler, usually pulling a Traveleze trailer, and head to somewhere in Montana. I still love going there and I think my favorite city is Helena. I have always wanted to move there, but it doesn’t look so likely these days. I will say one thing – that ‘66 Newport was good car for running around Montana and for a dumb kid.

Fire will be hosting a community barbecue party and dance from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 to help celebrate National Night Out. The community is invited to attend a free barbecue that will include hot dogs, chips, cookies and soda.

Children can take a tour of a fire engine and police car and organizers will sponsor a raffle at 6 p.m For more information about the Black Diamond event, call the Black Diamond Community Center at 360886-1011.

When I was 18 and a freshman at the U, which means dumb kid, I came home for the weekend. I got the bright idea I would see how fast I could drive on the Enumclaw fairgrounds road. I think I got it up to 90 before I spotted the red lights. A cop pulled me over and could tell I was 18 and brain dead, as boys usually are. I got a negligent driving ticket, which I paid so Dad would never find out. He never did, but about 30 years later I began writing for Emerald Downs, which required a racing license issued by the state’s gaming commission. I had completely forgotten about the speeding incident and informed them there

were no big tickets or anything similar in my past. I was wrong. During the span of three decades the state tinkered with the rules, moving negligent driving from a traffic violation to a criminal charge or something. The racing stewards thought it was a lot funnier than I did. I about had a stroke trying to figure out what was in my past that had been repressed by amnesia. Unfortunately, I remain my same weird self. I do have proof of one wild and crazy moment in my folks’ 1966 Chrysler Newport…and some of my best memories are riding with Dad and Mom, heading for Montana.

On the negative side, unions can be selfish and grasping, driving some companies out of business and raising costs. Also, communism, a more extreme form of socialism, controlled society too much in the Soviet Union and took away freedom and incentives to produce, eventually causing the collapse of the nation in 1991. Liberal: Liberals are those who want to bring improvement for the masses – to lift them from their oppression by the wealthy. In that sense Jesus Christ was a liberal, as were Republican presidents Teddy Roosevelt and William Taft, and Democratic presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt. The way the word is used today has twisted its meaning to almost a swear word. That’s why those who are liberals now call themselves progressives, reminding people of the good they did the nation in the early 20th century when industrial monopolies like Standard Oil and the railroad trusts were controlling the nation’s economy and government. It was a time where workers slaved 70 to 80 hours a week being paid pennies per hour in hazardous working conditions. It was an era when children as young as 5

worked in factories and mines. Progressive newspaper journalists, called “muckrakers” by Teddy Roosevelt, revealed these evils to the public, causing laws to be passed that ended or limited these abuses. Liberal policies also stifle business and encourage people to rely upon the government rather than themselves, creating higher taxes and excessive government controls on freedom. Fascism: This term came out of Italy in the 1920s and Germany and Japan in the 1930s. It is a system of government where right wing dictators like Hitler, Mussolini or Tojo ruled with the support of the big industrialists in capitalistic states. This system of government was very aggressive and bullying and brought about World War II. Calling someone a fascist means that person supports a right wing military dictatorship supported by big business. In conclusion, using these emotional words in letters to the editor is a misunderstanding and misuse of the true meaning of the words. They are being used as shorthand for evil, where, historically speaking, their meanings are entirely different. My response to such words is to figure that people who use them as epithets really do not understand their origins or their true meanings.

For the second year in a row, Tori Witten took top honors in the “Enumclaw Idol” contest, staged as part of the annual Street Fair. Her performances landed her a $100 cash prize through the “Idol” program, a sum that was matched by Fugate Ford. At right, Witten performs during the July 21 contest; below, she receives a check from Fugate’s Stan Fornalski. Photo below contributed by Fugate Ford; photo at right by Kevin Hanson

I am so happy with my experience that I referred him to my family. They now drive all the way from Wilbur, WA for their vehicle buying needs. My grandmother bought the first reissued convertible Camaro from Gamblin Motors. Go see Scott at Gamblin…you won’t be disappointed. Thanks Scott -

Carl Walter Nelson was born in a logging camp of many newly immigrated Swedes in Preston, Washington, the 2nd son of Carl Peter and Brita Wedin Nelson on July 3, 1921. The family moved to Buckley and finally to Enumclaw, where Walt and his brothers finished school. Walt served in the Navy (Pacific) in WWII, and married his high school sweetheart, Marvel Kay Armstrong in February, 1946. Walt is survived by his wife Marvel of 66 years, his daughter Marilyn Kay Corrigan (John),grandson Scott Richard Nelson (Lori), granddaughter Courtney Paige Anderson (Andy), and great grandchildren Nate Glasco and Owen Anderson, as well as additional mutually beloved relatives and friends. Walt is pre-deceased by his mother and father, Brita and Carl Nelson, his beloved son, Brian Richard Nelson, and his brothers N Clarence (Rose), and S Warne Nelson.

James Harvey Dever, born on June 3, 1941 in Bremerton Washington passed quietly away in the early hours of Monday, July 16, 2012. He was preceded in death by his Father, Harvey Dever and his Mother, Florence West Dever, brother Jack Dever. He is survived by his loving wife Geraldine (Jeri) Dever, his sister Jane Baily, 3 grown children, 5 step-children, 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. James was a quiet man with a sly and sometimes unexpected sense of humor. Most of his working years were spent as a Marine Machinist for Lockhead, Todd Shipyard and Pacific Fisherman. While not always the center of activities, his was a presence that was always felt. We will miss seeing him on his deck, waiting to greet family and visitors as they arrive, drinking his coffee and reading his book while quietly watching the wild life that surrounded his home.

654718

Walt was an accountant and enjoyed a long retirement with Marvel as snowbirds traveling between Hood Canal, Indio, and Sequim where they enjoyed friends, travel, golf, bridge and the good life! Memorial at Mill Ridge Village in Milton on August 11 @ 3pm, and eventual internment at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
