Located south of Black Diamond on Green Valley Road, the 520-acre park was purchased by the state in the late 1960s, Vassallo said. Farber and Vassallo pointed out the park has fallen on tough times due to budget cuts to all state parks since the recession of 2008. Fairleigh said prior to the recession the state parks were “two-thirds tax supported and now it is essentially a public enterprise…. We can’t maintain parks by just writing a check anymore.”

King County Superior Court 3B was packed the morning of Aug. 3 as attorneys argued the fate of the YarrowBay master planned developments targeted for Black Diamond. Judge Patrick Oishi heard the Land Use Petition Act appeal. For nearly three hours the parties presented their cases for and against the two developments, The Villages and Lawson Hills, which would add about 6,250 residences along with commercial, retail, schools, open space and parks. Nancy Rogers of Cairncross and Hempelmann in Seattle represented the Kirkland developer YarrowBay and David Bricklin of Seattle-based Bricklin and Newman presented the case for Toward Responsible Development, the group of community members who filed the LUPA appeal in October 2010. MAKING AN APPEAL Bricklin opened by stating the YarrowBay development is the largest ever proposed in King County. “It is proposed to occur in a tiny town, Black Diamond,” he said. The ordinances approving the two developments were unanimously passed by the Black Diamond City Council in September 2010, which prompted the appeal by Toward Responsible Development. “The basic outlines of the project are in place, and, this is a critical point… the city doesn’t get a second chance on any of those decisions,”

Bricklin said. “The code provides that YarrowBay locks in the development rights associated with these ordinances.” According to Bricklin, the environmental impact statements for the projects did not provide the necessary details for the city. “The result we saw...was very unsettling in a couple of ways,” Bricklin said. “The environmental impact statement simply didn’t dig into the meaty issues. Didn’t provide the decision makers with the important information they needed.” Bricklin said, concerning the city code, “time and again the City Council looked for and found a way to circumvent the requirements of their code.” Phil Olbrechts, the city’s hearing examiner, ruled the environmental impact statements for the projects were adequate. Following his ruling, the City Council considered the projects and approved the ordinances. Bricklin described the decision as “very perplexing.” THE CITY Sterbank spoke second, asking the judge to affirm the “unanimous decision of the Black Diamond City Council” approving the ordinances for the two master planned developments.

Sterbank said there were three overarching principles concerning the case. First, he said, “collateral attacks on underlying, fundamental land-use planning choices are impermitable. No. 2, the court’s review here is fundamentally deferential, both to the City Council’s decision and to the hearing examiner’s decision…. And third, application of the correct standards of review to the actual language of the City Council’s MPD permit decision and the actual language of the hearing examiner’s decisions and consideration of the actual testimony in evidence in the record, not counsel’s (Bricklin) characterization of it, requires the court to affirm the City Council’s and hearing examiner’s decision.” Sterbank said of the YarrowBay development, “Those fundamental planning choices were not challenged and they cannot be collaterally attacked here, and yet TRD’s position… are shot through with collateral attacks on the size of the project and starts with the mantra these are massive projects and deserve some special treatment.” A humorous moment came when Sterbank described the allegations in TRD’s brief as “rhetori-

In her opening statement, Rogers stated TRD’s brief went “beyond advocacy…. If we are going to take the examiner’s word, and I think we should, we need to take him at all of his words.” Regarding the TRD contention vital information was missing from the EIS, Rogers said, “The examiner’s decision was clear. That the only information omitted from the EIS was relatively minor.” Rogers pointed out there has been considerable development around Black Diamond, with projects in Covington, Kent and Maple Valley. “The state Supreme Court recognized these lands are destined for development,” she said. She said the allegations there is nothing the city can do later was not accurate. “YarrowBay can just go out and keep building houses until the cows come home. Doesn’t matter,” Rogers said. “It’s just not accurate.” Rogers said there were more than 150 conditions to be met, many requiring retesting before building can continue.

“At the beginning of each phase there has to be a fiscal analysis,” Rogers said. “If that shows a deficiency there are provisions by which the city can halt the development. This is not an à la carte YarrowBay gets to do whatever it wants kind of approval.” Regarding complaints of clear-cutting of the land, Rogers said, “Unless you live in a tent or a natural cave, or you work in a tent or a natural cave, the building in which you live or work was necessarily sitting on land that was cleared of something and graded in some way in order to pour a foundation. It is fundamental to development.” Concerning the hearing examiner’s ruling on the EIS, “The rule of reason cuts to whether the EIS provides a reasonably thorough discussion of the probable environmental impacts of a proposal,” she said. The YarrowBay attorney brought up the issue of legal standing or the ability to continue the appeal. Rogers said the one of the original appellants, Joe May, withdrew from the appeal after he was elected to the City Council. May filed an appeal of the final EIS regarding The Villages concerning phosphorus levels from stormwater runoff into Lake Sawyer. Rogers also addressed a complaint raised about possible construction noise in the form of an appeal filed by Vickie Harp, William Harp and Cindy Proctor. “Unfortunately Mr. Harp has passed away. Mrs. Harp and her daughter, Ms. Proctor, have moved away. There’s no one left with prejudice as to those issues raised in the appeal,” Rogers said. “It is a legal issue and I know the community doesn’t understand it. But I think standing is really important.” IN CLOSING Bricklin returned for a 20-minute rebuttal, stat-

ing TRD was not challenging the density of the development. “We are not collaterally attacking the comprehensive plan,” Bricklin said. “We are invoking the comprehensive plan.” The judge said — concerning the EIS and the hearing examiner’s ruling — “I am not going to pick and choose the different things that the hearing examiner might have said. I’m going to look at everything the hearing examiner said. I am also going to look at the context and really take a big picture view of everything. Whether it is going to benefit one party or another has no bearing.” The judge complimented the attorneys at the close of the hearing and said, “This is a case that is important to a lot of folks. It’s important to the city of Black Diamond, it’s important to the citizens that live there, it’s important to the developer. I want everyone here to rest assured I don’t take any of these issues lightly…. What I want you to feel at the end of the process is you’ve been heard, that I’ve looked at things critically, I looked at all the appropriate information and I was fair. And if I can make one assurance, I am going to be absolutely fair and thorough during the process.” Following the hearing, Bricklin said he was happy to see how well prepared the judge was for the hearing. Bricklin said a basic issue in the TRD case is, the “hearing examiner’s decision is wrong.” He also said Oishi could rule the EIS is adequate, “but still rule for us on other issues.” Sterbank also noted how well prepared the judge was for the case. “His questions were well placed particularly on the adequacy claim….” Sterbank said. “The hearing examiner correctly applied the rule of reason standard…. The choice under the statute is to affirm.”

Returning to their historic roots, the White River High Hornets will play their first home football game of the fall season on the natural grass surface of Sheets Field in downtown Buckley. It has been nine full seasons since the Hornets last played at Sheets, known for its rustic, wooden grandstands and often-muddy field. Current players only know the artificial turf and shiny metal bleachers of their field on the White River campus on the outskirts of town. But generations of Hornets fondly recall the days when many spectators walked to the game and others filled every parking spot in the neighborhood surrounding the downtown school. The situation changed with completion of the replacement White River High and the transition of the old high school to Glacier Middle School. Games have been played on campus since the fall of 2003 when doors of the new school swung open. That will change, for one night only, on Sept. 7 when the White River Hornets host Highline High in nonleague

In the Senate race, Mark Mullet earned 53 percent of the primary vote and Brad Toft earned 47 percent. In the Position 2 House race, Chad Magendanz picked up 52 percent and David Spring tallied 43 percent as both advance to the general election. In the House Position 1 race, incumbent Jay Rodne is unopposed. Plateau voters also will help decide all the statewide races that determine who runs the various agencies – as well as the Evergreen State itself. For governor, as expected, Democrat Jay Inslee and Republican Rob McKenna advanced to November’s general election. Inslee has the early momentum, hav-

ing received 47 percent of the primary vote, compared with McKenna’s 43 percent. Seven other candidates split the remaining votes. In other primary races of note: • Looking to replace McKenna as attorney general, Bob Ferguson and Reagan Dunn advanced to the general election with 52 percent and 38 percent of the vote, respectively. Both currently sit on the Metropolitan King County Council. • Running for secretary of state, Kim Wyman, 39 percent, and Kathleen Drew, 21 percent, advanced to the November ballot. • Hoping to become state auditor, James Watkins took 46 percent of the primary vote; also advancing was Troy Kelley with 24 percent. • Other statewide races appear to offer little in the way of drama, as incumbents took more

The game at Sheets comes in Week 2, following a season opener that pits the Hornets of White River against the Hornets of Enumclaw High. The traditional rivals will play Aug. 31 on the second-year, Pete’s Pool turf at the Enumclaw Expo Center. The season opener is significant in that it marks the return of the annual Hornet-Hornet tussle. The teams from the neighboring districts played for decades, even when they moved to different leagues. The rivalry game went on hiatus when former EHS coach Don Bartel chose to go another direction with his nonleague schedule; preferring not to play schools from a smaller classification, White River and Enumclaw did not meet in 2010 or 2011. When Bartel stepped down, Gibson and Enumclaw Athletic Director Kevin Smith agreed to resume the rivalry.

The Sheets Field game will kick off at 7 p.m. The decision to return one game to downtown Buckley was the brainchild of White River Athletic Director Chris Gibson. “We thought it would be an outstanding way to honor the community of Buckley,” Gibson said. “It’s a neat, nostalgic place to play.” A lot of work is needed to prepare Sheets Field for a single game, but costs will be kept to a minimum thanks to the time and expertise being volunteered by Hornet boosters. “There are a lot of outstanding people in this community doing a lot of work to make this happen,” Gibson said. For example, the field will be shifted slightly to have it fit better within the surrounding track. That means goal posts at each end of the field will have to be moved slightly to the west and the crown in the center of the field will move accordingly. Before plans could be finalized, it had to be determined that the Sheets grandstands could support a good-sized

Pat Stevenson, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, was born in England but now calls Buckley home.

Pat Stevenson celebrated her 100th birthday last

month with friends at the Buckley Senior Center. She was born in Barrowin-Furness, England, the

same year as the sinking of the Titanic. She recalls many fond memories from her century of life. She and her husband married in exotic Panama and remained wed for 52 years. Before settling in Buckley, she also lived in Philadelphia, New York and Oxnard, Calif. “My favorite place to live was definitely Oxnard because of the beaches,” Stevenson said, noting that 20 miles of coastline makes for some terrific beach scenery. Stevenson – whose mother was born in Oslo and her father in England – spent her first 18 years in Great Britain. She then moved with her family to the United States, witnessing the tragedies marked by the Great Depression. As a mother of two daughters, Stevenson was a busy but nurturing mother. “She made everything happy and pleasant for our childhood,” daughter Patty Porter said. Stevenson said she has had a wonderful life and remains busy, playing bridge every week. She admits her body has aged but maintains that her mind is “excellent.” During her younger days, she loved to play golf, go bowling and fishing and ride around on her ATV.

Working Baby Boomers may be the group most stressed about their economic futures, according to the newly-released results of the 2012 AARP election survey. The senior citizen advocacy group called 1,852 registered voters, almost threequarters of whom were 50 and older, between July 10 and July 16. An approximate 1,001 respondents were randomly sampled and the remainder came from a focused random sample of 50-and-older adults to gain a greater clarity of data for the desired age group. Younger voters were those aged 18 to 49. Survey workers gathered responses to questions in categories that, when taken as a whole, would create an “Anxiety Index” of voters concerns. Among those concerns were inflation, taxes, retirement opportunities, financial security, and health care affordability. All ages seemed to agree the national economy is in bad shape: three-quarters of voters 50 and older and 18 to 49 classified the condition of the national econ-

omy as at least “Bad.” A greater percentage of older voters classified the economy as “Very Bad”—43 percent versus 28 percent. Younger voters and retirees were consistent in their responses to the question, “How satisfied are you with your own financial situation today?” Sixty-six percent of respondents from both groups were at least somewhat satisfied, and even the “somewhat/very” divide between the groups’ responses were similar within 1 percent. Boomers—respondents aged 50 to-64 with full-time employment—had only a 54 percent satisfaction rate with their own financial situation. Boomers were also the most worried about their ability to achieve their financial goals, with worry making up 60 percent of responses. Boomers had the highest score, at 70 out of 100, on the AARP Anxiety Index. The five greatest fears, from highest to lowest, were: • prices rising faster than income • not having financial security in retirement • having to pay too much in taxes • not being able to retire when (they) want for finan-

More than two-thirds, 72 percent, of Boomer survey takers believed they would probably have to delay their retirement. Only 32 percent of respondents were worried about not being able to find a full-time job with benefits, a statistic that represents a silver lining of resiliency of the survey-takers. Boomers also did not believe their retirement would be secure. Only 34 percent of Boomers reported confidence that they would be financially able to live comfortably in retirement. That may have something to with the fact that only 39 percent of Boomers believe they have saved/are saving enough for retirement, compared to 57 percent of retirees. As a result, 59 percent of Boomers agree they are planning to rely even more than they had initially planned on Social Security and Medicare programs. Fifty-one percent of Boomer respondents said they disapproved of Barack Obama’s job performance, and 81 percent indicated disapproval with Congress. Presidential candidates Obama and Romney are in a dead heat when accounting for all responses from voters over age 50, but Boomers gave Romney a preference.

His death has motivated Olson even more. “Every time I go out on the mound, I know that Alex is with me and it makes me want to win the game for him,” Olson said. His brother’s death had a long-lasting impact, as Olson changed his major from communications to psychology and aspires to become a juvenile counselor. “After our family went through what we did, I changed my major. I just want to be able to help teens and with this degree, I will be able to help other teens who are struggling with the many issues the (teenage) age group deals with on a daily basis.”

Thus fa r, Olson has started 10 games, notched a 5-4 record and compiled an earned-run average of 3.34 Olson had the honor of playing in the WCL’s allstar game July 24. “I usually look at the stats, but in the end, it isn’t the stats that matter, it’s that he gave it all he had,” mother Toni said. “Andrew isn’t just a baseball player, he is much more than that.”

The sport was abandoned in 1986, only to be reborn in the fall of 2007. It took time to get a program up and running, and the Redhawks finally took the diamond in 2010. Now between collegiate seasons, Olson is taking the mound for the Bells, who offer up a roster packed with collegiate talent from the Pacific Northwest, California and beyond. The Bells play in the East Division of the

Olson maintains a solid workout routine. He runs almost every day and lifts weights three to five days a week, depending on the time of year. “In the fall and winter, I make sure to do my lifting and conditioning to get myself ready for the upcoming season,” Olson said. “In the spring, I just make sure I maintain my strength. In baseball, as any sport, there are always ways to stay in shape.”

Being a professional athlete is a dream shared by most young athletes, but few make it past high school competition. Andrew Olson, a product of Enumclaw High School, has taken two giant leaps beyond the prep ranks, first in college and now with the Bellingham Bells semi-pro baseball team. Olson fell in love with the game when he was in T-ball. “I have always been big into sports but baseball, well, there is something different about it,” Olson said. “I just have to thank God for giving me the talent and for my parents for sticking with me.” He relates a story often told by his parents, how he could throw a ball pretty hard before he was 2 years old. Those early skills outpaced those of other young players, allowing Olson to excel at Enumclaw High. He was a three-year varsity starter for the Hornets and garnered all-league honors following each season. He made the allleague first team as a senior, when he was the team MVP, the same season he tossed a no-hitter and landed a spot on the all-state roster. His stellar prep career landed Olson a position on the Tacoma Community College roster. He pitched two seasons for the Titans, receiving second team allleague accolades in 2010. From TCC, Olson had choices when it came to continuing his career. Despite offers from larger programs, he headed to Seattle University. “I loved the fact that it is a new program and I wanted to be able to help build the program up to what it was many years ago,” Olson said. “My teammates have the same passion to put Seattle University on the map in the baseball program. “I got offers from the University of Washington and schools from down south, but when I visited Seattle U, I knew it was

Political posturing takes center stage The political season has officially broken out the gates with the first round of truth-or-dare coming about 8:30 the evening of Aug. 7, the day of the primary election. Some of the best “I lost but I didn’t really lose” press releases floated across my computer screen the following morning. The tortured syntax involved in these political high-wire acts goes something like “I won, I won… kind of… (I got my head handed to me on a plate but I think my mom still likes me… maybe).” Don’t count on it. Harry Truman was right. If you want a friend get a dog – a little one – preferably one that can’t consider you a Lunchable if you Dennis Box lose the race for the Editor big tuna. Next comes the great debate by the self-appointed truth tellers. This is a wonderful time to be a very good listener and very discerning thinker. It is essential all voices are heard. This is critical. It is equally important for all to think independently and question… ourselves as well as each other. Group think tanks abound nationally and at home. I hear folks in the communities I cover tell my how tired they are of this activist or that agenda.

One of my lasting memories from attending college at Pacific Lutheran University was freshman move-in day. Just as that overwhelming feeling of “where to begin” started to settle, PLU football players appeared. They were easy to spot in their Lute jerseys and with two or three big, strong players helping take loads from the car to my dorm room, the job was done in no time. At Plateau Outreach Ministries, that overwhelming feeling of “where to begin” brought back those college memories. When faced with moving out of our offices, food bank and storage so Phase III renovation can begin, I thought of the PLU football team. I also thought of the new EHS football coach Mark Gunderson. Mark would understand the impact

I would like to comment on the response letter to Pastor Rainwater’s article regarding “the end.” The writer of the response (CourierHerald, June 27) was unhappy with how he felt the “good pastor” used fright and scare tactics, stating, “Can we instead use this wonderful community medium (newsprint) to extol our human nature and our potential to enjoy and contribute to this temporal heaven?” This is not a novel idea – silencing the voices of them we don’t want to hear or read or realize. This is a great part of what makes America the beautiful…so beautiful. This gentleman can reply, so can I, without fear of retaliation. Freedom of speech and press. Absolutely beautiful. That the pastor did not expound on the idea of our humanness as being “resplendent in the creative genius” nor to pride us in our ability to “contribute to this temporal heaven” is not surprising. That “mankind” uses his genius to benefit mankind is wonderful. He often also uses his genius desires, with manipulations and power plays and deceits, making things appear to be different than what really is. We get

this gift of strength and time would have on our organization. Mark played football at PLU and probably made a few movein trips himself from cars to dorm Britt Nelson rooms. On Aug. 16, Plateau Outreach Ministries will be gifted strength and time from our EHS Hornet football players to help complete our final move-out so construction can begin. Our Phase III renovation, under the direction of Randy Riggs and Tenant Contractors, will allow us to increase our services to the community. The project will add private interview rooms for our emergency assistance, remodel our food bank distribution and storage areas, provide better thrift store processing and storage areas, and add

shower and laundry facilities. If you aren’t familiar with POM, we provide basic need services to the communities of Enumclaw, Black Diamond, Buckley and the surrounding rural areas. With the help of many volunteers, we offer a food and clothing bank, emergency assistance for utilities, rent and other needs. Many of you are familiar with our More Pennies from Heaven thrift store, which is the first part of the building we remodeled after purchasing it in 2010. Through this current renovation project we will be increasing our efficiencies and expanding services. We are thankful for all the support we have received from the community to allow this to happen! this idea pretty early in life…from the youngest of us to the most genius of world leaders. Genius can enrich the masses and can be used to control and exterminate the masses. Through strategy and genius plans, one sector of population can grow rich while the others get shafted. What is temporal heaven for some could be temporal hell for others. But the biggest problem of temporal heaven is that it’s temporary. There’s a far larger time scenario to be concerned with and prepared for. That you state, the good pastor resorted to using scare and fear tactics causes me to ask sir, ever so gently, do you own an insurance policy? Homeowners? In case of fire or theft? Auto? Do you know how much medical care can cost? Life insurance? Did the insurance agent say to you, “In the event of your death, could your family continue to live in their customary lifestyle? Keep the family home? College? Scary. Frightening. Factual. Did you, upon factual realization, come to the conclusion you’d like to be prepared before the event? You didn’t get ticked at the insurance man for scaring you, did you? When you warn your newest young driver of the facts and repercussions of stop signs and speed – I know you did it because you care so much, so did I. It was information of great value. Life and death knowledge. This is exactly what the good pas-

tor did. He informed, through this great community medium, essential information we need to know and be prepared for before the event. He is informing us that the BIBLE (Basic Information Before Leaving Earth), the “maker’s manual,” “God’s instruction book,” tells us how to be secure forever. Jesus provided the “eternal life policy” and it can be ours, free for the asking. I did. When Billy Graham was asked if he really understood the Bible, he said no, there’s a lot I do not understand, but what I do understand, I’m going for. Our point of view is not required: how I see it or you see it will not be part of the equation. It will simply involve around, “Who Jesus is to us.” Kinda like, did you sign the policy? That’s simple enough to do. Ask Jesus to forgive you. We all come up short and not holy enough, ever. Repent, leave your dirt behind…with his assistance. Release the unforgiveness you hold on others. Tell the lord you’d like to feel you’d want to forgive them. He knows all about it already. Follow him. We don’t “come” to him fit and in shape. We come with hang-ups and messes. He washes the shame away and works with us inside-out. Do we behave perfectly, ever? No. But our rightstanding before God is our claim and policy in Jesus. No fear. No fright. Just prepared. Interior design is worth visit Many know Bridget Peterson as a former employee in Suburban Soul.” When that business closed its doors – yet another victim of our screwed up economy – she decided to open a store of her own, which was something she had wanted to do for many years. So, a couple months ago, she finally did. She was eminently qualified, having spent more than 15 years in the retail clothing business, including nine years with Nordstrom and four years with The Gap. I hadn’t heard of her place, but happened to notice it one day last week. So I curiously ambled inside. I was promptly blown away. In my humble opinion, Bridget’s Boutique is one of the most attractive stores in town. Initially, I wasn’t sure what to make of it: was it a

clothing store, an antique gallery, or simply the dissertation for a doctoral degree in interior design? The last option was eliminated when Bridget told me she had little formal education beyond high school. (There was that time she fooled around with schooling to become a dental assistant, but that didn’t last long because she absolutely hated it.) The walls are lined with large sheets of rusty tin. Artistically scattered across the stenciled floor are any number of antique trunks, old wooden boxes, large Puget Sound Energy utility spools, old light fixtures,

antique furniture, beds and cabinets, and a collection of old medicine bottles. There’s a fisherman’s ancient crab trap hanging over an aged ladder. Yet, make no mistake, this boutique is first and foremost a clothing store rather than an antique salon. It offers a refined line of women’s attire, bearing labels that weren’t familiar to me. The jeans are quite stylish. Many of the dresses and blouses are attractive, certainly respectable street wear, but still possess considerable romance and sensual charm. In other words, such styles will turn a few heads. (My, oh my, the things they wear in public these days.) There’s also a selection of rings, bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry and a collection of accessories like purses and scarves. The dressing rooms are nicely mirrored and uniquely designed with

If an activists sound like a diplomat negotiating breaks on Bulgarian buttermilk tariffs no one will listen, or care. In American politics, at both a national and community level, there is a place for hyperbole and hysteria. The discerning listener is the key to this equation. Because someone is angry and throws fireball verbs, doesn’t make that person right… or wrong. Anger is often used to justify poorly-posited positions, but I have found every once in a while that annoying angry guy is right. I believe in language; what is said and how it is said matters. I do not romanticize about the ideals of the power of the people or the evil state or other rhetorical nonsense. In politics and life, people are complex in their motivations. What they say and how they say it, if listened to carefully, will reveal what they mean. The beating heart of political action is all too often simply revenge by other words. Through many years of covering and observing political races at all levels I have learned our Constitution can withstand the best we have and the worst. Not because it was written by God, but because it was written by thoughtful, independent thinkers, who often did not agree on the shade of the sky, or anything else. But they came up with a system that can withstand the worst and excel with the best. One vote, one woman, one man… it means just that.

I asked Bridget if everything in the store was for sale. “Well, not all the antiques,” she said. “I’d like to keep a few of them as racks to display the clothing.” But then she added with a playful little smirk. “On second thought, of course, everything is for sale if the price is right.” But you don’t have to be in the market for clothes or antiques to stop by. No matter what your intentions, Bridget will be glad to see you. And, trust me, the store’s design is well worth a visit.

‘Tapped’ showing at EHS By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

A documentary taking aim at the bottled water industry is coming to Enumclaw, the result of an ongoing project by teenage activist Austin Schuver. The award-winning “Tapped” takes a critical look at a multibillion-dollar industry. The 75-minute film centers on the health risks alleged to be associated with plastic bottles and the methods employed by the industry to gain access to a life-sustaining substance – water. Schuver’s introduction to the bottled water industry came when he was an eighth-grade student at Annie Wright School in Tacoma. He has continued to work on the proj-

ect now that he attends Enumclaw High School, where he is an incoming sophomore. To continue telling his tale, Schuver has received support locally from Mutual of Enumclaw, Helac Corporation and the Enumclaw Rotary Foundation.

ing? Stephanie: For those of us who enjoy training for events, it’s often difficult to find the right balance between work, family and training. Vacations are important for bonding with family and get- Stephanie Norton-Bredl ting away from the stress of daily life. We don’t want our fitness goals to be the cause of tension or stress. With planning, you should be able to stick to your goals and enjoy your vacation. My No. 1 suggestion for finding success is to plan ahead. Here are some ideas that other athletes have found successful. Maybe some of these will work for you. • Plan your vacation for a week that you have a lighter training load. • Research your exercise options. Is there a running trail nearby? Does your hotel have a fitness center? • Plan to get up early to train before the family gets out of bed. Or exercise at

Dear Stephanie and Bruce: I need your help to stick with my exercise plan while on vacation with my family. How do I maintain my exercise habit without interfering with family plans? – Lyn Stephanie: It can be difficult to find the right balance to maximize spending time with family during vacation while continuing to exercise. My first suggestion is to select a physical activity that everyone can enjoy. Consider a family hike, bike ride or walk on the beach. My second suggestion is to take a good look at your goals for vacation and be willing to trade some of your normal exercise time for extra time with family. Bruce: Do you have advice for readers who are training for a marathon, triathlon, century bike ride or other epic event and they are conflicted with the tension of wanting to participate in all of the family activities and continue their daily train-

National parks and hotels often have free or low-cost kids’ activities. • Find a fun family activity that can coexist with your training activity. Can the kids play in the water park while you swim laps in the lap pool? Can the family ride bikes while you run? • Finally, involve the family in planning how you will train and still be fully engaged in the family experience. Your loved ones may have additional suggestions or ideas. Bruce: This is great advice and will help mitigate guilt, stress and conflict of spending time with family and training. I am curious what you can do for other sources

of guilt, stress and conflict. Seriously, some of us struggle with disrupting our exercise routine while on vacation and can be less than pleasant until we find comfort with a temporary solution. The key is to have a conversation with your family before you leave to better meet each other’s expectations for a great vacation. Stephanie: To end, I’d like to add that it’s important to be flexible. Things may not always work out the way you planned and if you happen to miss a run because you opted to play with your family, it’s not the end of the world. Just get back to the plan as soon as possible. One missed workout will hardly derail weeks of dedication. The trick is to get back on track as soon as possible. Don’t give up. You can do it! Keep a diary that pinpoints the “trigger” times. Once you can recognize the triggers, try substituting alternative behaviors. • Look for and accept support: Tell the people in your life that you want to quit. Set a quit date and ask them to support you in your decision. You will be on edge at first and their understanding of your irritability is important. Make a pact to quit tobacco with a friend. Call a friend or colleague who has already quit for support during the rough moments. • When the urge hits: The urge to use tobacco will eventually pass whether or not you light up. When you feel the urge coming on, take three deep breaths, brush your teeth, walk around the block or drink some water. As time goes on, the urge to smoke will become less intense and easier to manage. • Rid your body of nicotine: Drinking plenty of water will help flush tobacco chemicals out of your system. Also, pay close attention to your diet. Eating healthy, wellbalanced meals will help your body get rid of toxins. Exercise is an excellent way

to curb cravings for nicotine. A brisk walk 15 minutes a day reduces cravings for a long period of time. • Keep your hands busy: Find substitutes for the hand movements of using tobacco. Start a hobby that involves your hands, such as sewing, woodworking, painting or drawing. • See your doctor: Your primary care physician can offer support, advice, and a prescription for medications or nicotine replacement products as needed. IN THE MILITARY Seaman Recruit Thomas A. Bridges, a 2005 graduate of White River High School, completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Bridges completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. A Dream Fulﬁlled for a Local Bonney Lake Business

“It’s a dream come true,” says Dr. Martin Henschell. “A little surreal, maybe, but fantastic!” It has taken the Henschells years to complete this project. They purchased the land in 2005 but were locked into a lease and not ready financially to move ahead with construction. Then, when they were ready, the market collapsed. “We started the loan process in 2009. That was scary. Our loan officer, at Heritage Bank, was told “no” several times. Luckily, we all stuck with it and finally got funding. The SBA stepped in and helped.” Henschell finally broke ground at the end of 2011 and construction started with the new year. The Ribbon Cutting will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the business. The extra space will allow them to treat patients more efficiently as well as give them room to expand. “Massage is a big part of our business and we have some of the best therapists in the region but we didn’t have enough rooms for them. Now we do,” says Dr. Henschell. And what about that drive-thru window? They added space for a coffee shop. They are looking for interested coffee businesses to lease the space. They will be seeing patients at the new location starting August 13.

The maintenance and operation levy request was honored with 64 percent support. The levy sought tax collections of $3 million in 2013 and $3.2 million in 2014. Boosters had claimed local impacts of the nationwide recession had caused the district to lose 20 percent of its funding since 2009. Commissioners said they have reduced overtime costs, dipped into reserve funds, reduced salaries, left positions vacant and cut training expenses. With the levy passage, it’s anticipated the district can continue its firefighting and emergency medical services at current levels.
