County set to finalize shrunken Urban Growth Areas
New development rules come on heals of state mandated remand By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com
Kitsap County is on the verge of approving new Urban Growth Area (UGA) boundaries for Silverdale, Central Kitsap and Port Orchard. The boundaries for most of the UGAs will be smaller than those approved in 2006. Following a ruling by the Central Washington Growth Management Hearings Board, the county was forced to reconsider UGA sizes, urban densities and future growth. The final public hearing on the UGA changes is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Mon., Aug. 27. County commissioners are then slated
to deliberate on the plans beginning at 8:30 August 29. The county’s deadline for finalizing its comprehensive plan is August 31. The county has held 55 public meetings and open houses in the past year dealing with UGAs. The new recommended boundaries are largely based upon where urban infrastructure such as sewer service could be affordably provided, where environmental impacts to critical areas and shorelines would be minimized and where existing suburban development in need of urban services was already located. Following two public hearings, commissioners chose preferred alternative bound-
aries for the county’s eight UGAs. The final draft documents were released May 10 and included an analysis of impacts to critical areas, roads, police, fire and other services as well as the ability to provide public facilities such as sewer, water, parks and schools. In Silverdale, which will be shrunk by about a third, a portion of the southern end of the UGA boundary
that includes Chico Way, Eldoroado Hills and other vacant properties was taken out since the area’s sewer is nearly at capacity and a groundswell of people came forward opposing inclusion in the UGA. The area also has some steep slopes that cannot handle a lot of density. The Apex Airpark area, See Urban growth, A7

Community rallied to save family’s dream By Patrick McDonough Reporter
At El Balcon Restaurant in downtown Bremerton customers are likely to receive a smile and a blessing with their meal. Mario and Ofelia Amaya, the owners of the restaurant, wouldn’t have it any other way. They said it is their way to pass along the grace that has made their dream of owning the restaurant come true. Mario Amaya said the dream began in the summer of 2008 when he visited Bremerton and saw hot dog vendors on the streets and had a vision of selling food in the same manner. “I saw a beautiful city with high buildings and something came into my heart to bring our food and our culture here,” Mario Amaya said. At the time, the couple was living in Tacoma. To help make ends meet, they were selling food cooked in a hand-made grill on the second floor balcony of their apartment. Mario would take to the streets to sell the food. He said he walked door-to-door to local businesses and offer the food, but selling food was only a small part of a larger dream to someday own a restaurant.

He owners of the restaurant said it is through the Grace of God and the help of the people of Bremerton that the business opened in May. The couple continued selling food to local businesses in Tacoma, until they saved the money to apply for a vending license with the city of Bremerton in 2010. The couple’s hope was realized when the city of Bremerton approved the license and in the summer of 2010 and the couple opened a food tent on the corner of Burwell Street and Pacific Avenue. The dream seemed short lived. Mario Amaya said he could not afford to purchase a covering required and had to close in September of 2010. The couple placed all of their hopes and dreams on the business and Mario said by

He said members of Shop 64 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard knew their business closed and the family was facing financial difficulty. “They bought Christmas presents for my five children,” Mario Amaya said. “The people of Bremerton have always been good to us.” The family continued to struggle, but by that February Mario said he found work at the shipyard and things

began to look better for the family. Mario Amaya continued to work at the shipyard, but he said the dream of owning a restaurant never left him or his family. In the summer of 2011 Mario Amaya said he was able to reestablish his sidewalk food operaton and continued to work at the shipyard until the food stand began to produce enough money to support the family. The family worked through the winter building an ever-growing clientele. Mario Amaya said in early 2012 an opportunity arose to open a store front restaurant

Mario said the people of Bremerton again came to the aid of the family with the donated materials. “Through the grace of God and the help of my brother in law and the people of Bremerton we were able to open The El Balcon in May,” he said. Since opening the restaurant, Mario Amaya said the restaurant has been blessed with customers and the family offers a blessing in return to each customer. Mario said customers like the family oriented environment and the mix of Mexican and Salvadoran food. Mary Appleton said she tries to eat in the restaurant as often as possible. She said she likes the food and family atmosphere. “It is hard not to eat here every day,” she said. “I work in the area and the food is really authentic and I like that seeing the family.” Many customers express similar sentiments about the food and the family atmosphere. During the summer, the family atmosphere of the restaurant grows to include Mario and Ofelia’s daughter Cesia Amaya, 16, and son Mario, 13. Employee Cesia Amaya said she likes seeing custom-

I like helping my family and learning about the business.” City officials also said they like the food and the effect the restaurant has on the downtown area. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent said the El Balcon attracts customers to downtown and is just good food. “It is tremendously authentic Mexican and Salvadorian food,” she said. “It is the hottest thing in town. Mario and Ofelia are a great addition to the city and they draw visitors and residents to Downtown Bremerton.” Mario Amaya said the journey to owning the restaurant has taken blood sweat and tears but he is proud of the food the family serves and believes the restaurant has great things in its future. “We were able to open the restaurant by the glory of God,” he said. “We just never gave up. We always had each other, our dream and God.”

Nix State Parks’ access tax IN OUR OPINION
The Washington State Legislature made a mistake when deciding to make Washington State Parks a self supporting system by charging a use tax called the Discover Pass. Now, the two men vying for the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia need to offer plans that include more than the status quo exemptions to fees by the smallest segment of the disenfranchised citizens of the state. Critics across the state say the Legislature’s new funding scheme, that followed the disbanding of the The Ecology and Parks Committee, will destroy one of the oldest park systems in the nation. Beyond the maintenance issues created by cuts, the more important issue is that of access to public lands, and the health recreation they offer, by the poor who may not have the $30 annual entry tax. Since 2007, parks funding has been cut by 82 percent as state lawmakers scrambled to find balanced departmental budgets eviscerated by the downed economy. Though money is tight, state park access needs to return to a pay-ifyou-can system of entry, otherwise the state’s poor are likely to be left out. Both top candidates for Governor were stumping last week on claims that parks need to keep public funding at some level. Both say they support continued minimum the exemptions of the access tax for the disabled, foster families and seniors, which loses an estimated $4 million in annual Discover Pass revenues. To that exemption list they should add anyone eligible for food stamps or free and reduced lunch program, both current markers for other programs and exemptions. The director of Washington State Parks and Recreation Wednesday told a radio interviewer that about $18 million in state funding was needed to keep the parks open for the next biennium budget. As the clock runs out on the remaining general funds this year, he would not say how close to “self supporting” his department was. He did say that the Discover Pass missed its sales goal during its inaugural year by 50 percent. That 50 percent of the expected user base that chose not to pay to enter public land is a message that should be heard.

Bachmann at least gets to distance herself from the Republican Congressional blank check given to the bigspending Bush administration. Under Ryan’s allegedly hawkish eye, his party started two unpaid-for wars, cut taxes during said wars, grew the government, exploded the national debt and then bailed
out unregulated banks with taxpayer money. Paul Ryan voted yes for all of it and doesn’t ask for a correction when he’s called a small government conservative. Both Bachmann and Ryan are also at the extreme end of the spectrum when it comes to gay rights and reproductive freedoms. They both have consistently voted for any antiabortion/anti-contraception bills that came before them. Ditto with expanding martial rights to same sex couples. Ryan, with all his libertarian billing, has voted to take away liberties from his fellow citizens. He is the govern-
ment he’s warned us about: Freedom is for corporations, and regulations are for our private lives. If Ryan is now the Republican mainstream, Bachmann is now the Republican mainstream. If Ryan is getting the full embrace of his party–– Bachmann should be getting that same welcome into the fray. Or, in the case of Republicans in 2012, the fringe. A blurry vision
The Challenges of Growing Old in the 21st Century Senior Life 101
Carl R. Johnson Community Relations Director Kitsap Alliance of Resources for Elders I’ll never forget the day I renewed my driver’s license just before I turned 55. It was just like every other DMV visit with lots of people waiting for their number to be called and sitting around in a somewhat drab environment dreading the encounter with the person administering the eye test and processing my paper work. Finally, my number was called and I approached the counter to begin the visual ordeal. After being asked for my driver’s license, I was told to look into the eye-test viewer and start reading the letters, line by line. This, I thought, was the easy part, since I had never had a problem reading those letters in the past. But that time, the letters weren’t as crisp and sharp as they should have been. In fact, they were blurry. As a result I naïvely suggested that the equipment must be malfunctioning, and that maybe I need to move to a different viewer. “No. That won’t be necessary,” the clerk said. “You’ve identified the letters far enough down the list to pass, but you might want to get your eyes examined.” Was my eyesight actually beginning to fail me? Was I following in the footsteps of my dad, and other family members, who also had vision problems? Was it time to have my eyes checked? Yes it was because like so many others aging was beginning to manifest itself. Fortunately, instead of hiding from and or denying the reality, I made an appointment to have my eyes examined. The exam confirmed that my right eye had indeed become weaker, and that I should have glasses for driving and reading. As I discussed in my article See A Blurry Vision, A7

which includes a series of critical areas throughout it, was also taken out of the UGA. The county also chose to keep the Clear Creek Trail area out of the UGA in order to preserve it and maintain control of the sensitive environment. The Central Kitsap UGA, meanwhile, which roughly runs from Waaga Way to Riddell Road, will shrink by about 13 percent. “What you’re looking at is a lot of land with limited development capacity to start with,” said county plan-

last month, which dealt with the challenges of hearing loss, every one of us, as we age, will have to confront the inevitable decline of our physical abilities. Eyesight is one of those “changes” that needs to be addressed. According to a publication by Lighthouse International, eye research confirms that as we age the quality of our vision diminishes naturally. Most changes typically are not severe, and a new prescription for glasses or a few adaptations, such as improved lighting, may be all that is needed. However, conditions such as macular degenera-
ner Eric Baker. A stretch of shoreline area along the east side of Dyes Inlet, including Barker Creek, has been removed due to how costly and difficult it would be to install sewers. In addition, the Gilbertson area, including University Point, which has a series of steep slopes, wetlands and very little capacity to grow was removed. The Royal Valley parcel, labelled as a newly created senior living homestead zone, will be included in the UGA. Baker said the county received several comments expressing concern about the Royal Valley parcel and, in particular, worries about Paulson Road congestion
and development. Baker said that the senior housing development planned there will not increase, but rather limit Paulson Road access to emergency vehicles only. He also noted that the development will include a 100 foot project perimeter to aid in keeping the area’s rural character and aesthetic. In the Port Orchard UGA, there has been a substantial reduction of properties at the southern end toward Bielmeier Road, which has now been rolled up to just past Baker Road. In addition, a large chunk of the northeastern corner of the UGA was lopped off. In all, the Port Orchard UGA will shrink by about 22 percent.
tion, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy can affect permanently the quality of sight for older adults. Research shows that the majority of Americans has limited knowledge about vision loss and aging, and assumes — mistakenly — that older adults become visually impaired as a part of the normal aging process. There are two words in the above paragraph that establish an important distinction which needs to be understood as not quite negative. First is “diminish,” which is something that happens naturally, and is often easily corrected. The second word is “impaired” which is a vision problem that may or may not be treatable, but which often requires a surgical pro-
cedure to correct when it is treatable. In fact, just within the past few days I’ve discovered the significance of this distinction. For a number of years I’ve been able to function quite well with my reading glasses. But, a recent eye exam revealed that I have a macular hole, and I am now scheduled for surgery to repair the damage. And while the prognosis is very promising, it has definitely been a wake-up call, and another reason to be faithful in those eye exams. Next month I want to continue our look at this subject and share some information that will help identify potential “issues,” and what we can do to correct blurry vision.

Her guests are 13-year-olds playing in the national championship. Poulsbo is the host city of this year’s series and the community welcomed players with a downtown parade, banquet and the spare rooms in local homes. Ten teams from nine states competed in the series, which ended Wednesday. More than 45 local families took in 118 boys — many hosted three, four or five teammates, host family organizer Barb Weedin said. “It’s very heartwarming to see people who have stepped up, people that have just opened up their homes to these boys,” Weedin said. “I just can’t say ‘Thank you’ enough.” One Poulsbo couple that is hosting players this week said they are still in touch with the family that hosted their son eight years ago. “I can’t tell you about the hospitality and how we were treated,” Judy Seth said. “A part of that experience is why we wanted to give back.” Seth said of the three boys, from Greensville, N.C., that she’s hosting, “We’re really their parents for 10 days.” Seth’s son, Tyler, played for Kitsap at a 14-year-old Babe Ruth tournament in North Carolina and a 16-year-old Babe Ruth tournament in Arkansas. For many families, the more guests the merrier.

The day after the players arrived in Poulsbo, they were down at the local park practicing, and ended up teaching a thing or two to a four-year-old boy. The scene warmed her heart, “[the boys] showing him how to run to first base,” Breitmayer said. “I didn’t know what was expected, but I’m having a blast.” So are the players. The Westfield players — Anthony Clark, Shaun Gezotis, Scott Walsh and Liam Whitman — said Poulsbo is very nice and has “good citizens.” “It’s been pretty interesting,” Anthony said. “I haven’t seen my parents in a while, but it’s good to try something new and stay with a host family. They’ve been very welcoming.” The day after Westfield’s first game, the Breitmayers took the boys and their families boating. “We’re just having a blast,” Breitmayer said. “There’s lots of energy, I wish I had some [more],” she laughed. Breitmayer said the players stay with host families during
the tournament for the “cultural experience.” When there is time, many of the families plan to take the players on Washington excursions. Seth added, “They’re going to experience what the Northwest is like. They probably would have never come to the Northwest in their life if not for baseball.” Breitmayer said she liked getting to know her guests. The boys also filled her in on how they got to the World Series. The Westfield boys said their team didn’t expect to win, but when they won the qualifying regional tournament, the community rallied around them. Westfield, Mass. raised $16,000 in one week to send the team to Kitsap for the tournament. Many of the players, especially Seth’s North Carolina boys, are looking forward to the cooler temperatures and lower humidity than they are used to playing in. “It’s amazing to me what [cohost presidents] Brent [Stenman] and Russ Barker have done, to bring the World Series here to North Kitsap,” said Daniel Seth, Judy’s husband. “They worked a ton to pull this thing off. I think it’s going to be awesome.”

Three NKF&R firefighters sent to Taylor Bridge fire Staff
Three North Kitsap Fire & Rescue firefighters were sent to Kittatas County to help fight the Taylor Bridge Fire, NKF&R Chief Dan Smith said, which had grown to 22,600 acres Thursday morning. Nearly 900 firefighters were working the fire. Local firefighters Alex Hickey, Dean Schuster and Jasper Stenstrom took a brush engine to the fire as part of three regional strike teams, consisting of
firefighters and equipment from King, Kitsap, Mason and Pierce counties. Smith, the regional strike team coordinator, said each strike team consists of five wildland engines, a water tender and a strike team leader. It’s the first time this year that firefighters from North Kitsap have assisted elsewhere under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan. The Taylor Bridge Fire is located six miles east of Cle Elum on State Route 10, milepost 90 in Kittitas County. Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste

authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources at 3:30 p.m., Aug. 13, at the request of Kittitas County Fire District 7. According to Batiste’s office, the fire started on Aug. 13 at approximately 1:19 p.m. and is burning in sage and timber. The cause of the fire is unknown. As of 9 p.m. Aug. 13, mobilization specialists from the state Fire Protection Bureau had ordered eight strike teams of wildland engines to supplement resources already fighting the fire. As of Sunday evening the fire burned 23,000 acres

and was nearly 50 percent contained after destroying 48 homes and 15 other buildings. “Right now, there is the possibility of seven to 14 large fires that could happen from this lightning Friday and Saturday,” Smith said last week as the fire grew rapidly. “Fire resources in the state are preparing for that as well. Under the State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan, the Fire Protection Bureau coordinates the initial dispatch and continued administrative oversight of resources and personnel for the duration of a major fire. The Kitsap County Fire Marshal announced a Phase I Outdoor Burning Ban, which started Aug. 16. Under a Phase I Outdoor Burning Ban, outdoor burning permits are temporarily suspended and no outdoor burning is allowed except for cooking fires in contained cooking units or designated areas and recreational fires. A “recreational” fire is built in a designated fire pit space, no larger than three feet in diameter, contains seasoned firewood or charcoal briquettes only,
is located in a space well clear of vegetation, and at least 25 feet from buildings, fences, or anything that might burn. Authorities recommend the fire be attended at all times by an alert adult with immediate access to a shovel and a water source. Outdoor burning is the most common cause of wildfires, according to David Lynam, Kitsap County Fire Marshal. The potential for dangerous fire spread is increasing as vegetation moisture content is decreasing due to a prolonged spell of warm and dry weather, typical

Health officials expand shellfish harvesting closures Samples show up to six times allowable PSP Staff
A bloom of paralytic shellfish poisoning has led officials to expand the closure of recreational shellfish to Dyes and Sinclair Inlets. Officials from the Washington State Department of Health and the Kitsap Public Health District said the
expanded warning effectively closes the entire eastern shoreline of Kitsap County from Point Jefferson to the Pierce County Line and includes all bays and inlets. Samples of mussels collected on Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. from multiple sites contained Paralitic Shellfish Poisioning toxins ranging from 96 to 694 micrograms per 100 grams of shellfish tissue. Shorelines are closed when toxin levels exceed 80 micrograms per 100 grams of tissue. The principal toxin responsible for
PSP is saxitoxin, a neurotoxin produced by microscopic algae, which builds up in shellfish as the filter feed. All species of clams, oysters and mussels are included in the warning. Shrimp and crabs are not included, but officials said crabs should be cleaned prior to cooking and “crab butter” should be discarded. Toxins are not destroyed by cooking or freezing and can cause illness and death. Symptoms can appear in minutes or hours and usually start with tingling lips and tongue with the tingling then moving to hands and feet. Further symptoms include difficulty breathing and potential death. Health officials said anyone experiencing such symptoms should contact a health care provider and in the case of an extreme reaction contact 911.
CK house destroyed by fire Home belonged to deputy and his family By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com
Central Kitsap firefighters responded to a report of a fully engulfed home in 7400 block of Woodbridge Lane at 8:09 p.m. this past Friday. A second alarm was raised about five minutes later and additional crews responded to the scene. No one was injured in the blaze and it was later learned that the home belonged to a Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office deputy and his family. Deputy Scott Wilson, a sheriff ’s office spokesman, said that the family is staying locally, but still needs help. “The Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office Guild has stepped in to help the family with immediate needs,”
Wilson said, noting that the union set up an emergency fund at Key Bank several years ago for situations such as this. “Its a way for everybody to help everybody else as best they can,” Wilson said. “Those that want to help out the family can go to Key Bank and contribute to the Deputy Sheriff ’s Guild emergency fund.” Wilson said that area firefighters, the Red Cross and others have also stepped up to help the family in its time of need. Another group that has stepped forward is the Washington Academy of Music, where the deputy’s 14-year-old daughter has been a longtime student. Director Rick Cox said, “everybody down here knows her” and, as a result,
wants to help out. Gift cards and gift certificates, school supplies and non-perishable foodstuffs will be accepted for the family from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday at the academy,
located at 3100 Bucklin Hill Road, suite 116, in Silverdale. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Kitsap County Fire Marshal.

A Silverdale man reported that two men in ski masks robbed him in the East Bremerton Walmart parking lot shortly before midnight Friday. Thomas E. Ragan, 27, told a Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office deputy that he used a Kitsap Credit Union ATM near the Walmart sometime around 11 p.m. and then parked his car for a short time and texted his girlfriend. He told police that he then exited his vehicle when two men grabbed and forced him to the ground. Thomas said that he felt a hard object being thrust into his back and one of the men demanded Thomas’ money or else he would shoot him. “Thomas stated the second took his vehicle keys and began rummaging through

One of the men was described as being about 5’10” and thin. The man claiming to have the gun is described as about 6’1” with a heavy build. Thomas said both men were wearing black sweatshirts and sweatpants. Thomas told police his wallet contained $180, his driver’s license and Navy ID and several debit and credit cards. Thomas reported the robbery from the South Kitsap Fred Meyer Store at about 12:18 a.m. Police said they asked Walmart to review surveillance footage.

Students bid farewell to teacher who inspired music and joy By Patrick McDonough Reporter
Silverdale’s Waterfront Park became a mix of music, memories and emotions as students and parents gathered last week to bid a fond farewell to departing Klahowya music teacher and band director Jeff McBirnie. McBirnie taught at the school for six years before accepting a job in his home state of Montana. During that time he has worked to expand the music program and made a lot of friends and changed lives along the way, students and parents said. In response to the news of McBirnie’s departure, parents and students organized a potluck with cake and ice cream and a great many hugs and handshakes for a teacher many refer to affectionately as “Birnie.” Bill Harrington, a parent of two students at the school said he wanted to say goodbye to a teacher who had helped both find inspiration in music as well as learning. “I have never seen anyone with his level of dedication,” he said. “We are losing a real talent.” Harrington’s daughter, Klahowya senior Katarina Harrington, 16, said she had been involved in as many programs as possible in the school’s music program because of McBirnie’s presence in the music program. “I feel like I have really

I am going to miss him, I really am.” Nathan Peterson, 13, an eighth-grade student at the school, and Jennifer Peterson’s brother, said he had met McBirnie through his sister and McBirnie’s personality
and reputation had inspired him to also join the music program. “Birnie has always been an amazing guy,” he said. “He has always been a huge kid. He is crazy and inspirational guy.” Many students said they had been inspired by McBirnie’s teaching and some said he had changed the course of their lives for the better. Natasia Brooks, 21, graduated three years ago, but said she came to say farewell to a teacher who had always sought to bring out the best in all of his students. “When he came he took us all under his wing and he
helped all of us to grow,” she said. “By the time I graduated, I felt like I was a leader and I feel he helped me a lot with that. I think he helped all of us be all we could be.” Said she still plays once in a while but just graduated from Central Washington University. “I am going to be a math teacher,” she said. “He is one of the main reasons I want to be a teacher.” Angie Shiell, President of the Klahowya Band Parents Association, said she had seen a positive transformation and expansion of the program under McBirnie’s guidance.
“He really brought this program to life,” she said. “He inspires the students to be individuals while working together.” As people moved through the waterfront, eating and saying their farewells, a group of students played jazz improvisations with a drummer, saxophone, acoustic bass guitar and a trombone. Seth Perez, 17, a Klahowya senior and drummer for the jazz band, said the music seemed an appropriate gift from the students. Perez said he would not be a musician without McBirnie’s guidance and inspiration.
“If not for him I would not know how to play music, it was not my thing at all,” he said. “I will be playing drums for the rest of my life now. I play for school and for my church group.” As the evening ended, another group of students playing brass percussion and woodwinds offered a musical farewell as McBirnie directed the musicians for one last performance. As the band played, students and parents gathered around the teacher and offered hugs and handshakes some with tears in their eyes. McBirnie said he would be moving to a teaching post in Montana. He said he grew up in the state and the move would allow him to live closer to family. He said he looked forward to returning to the place he grew up, but would miss the students and the extended family of Klahowya. “I have had a wonderful six years working with these kids,” he said. I have so many wonderful memories. They have taught me so much.” McBirnie said he was amazed at the turnout and hoped he would leave behind a legacy of inspiration that would serve students the rest of their lives. “I never wanted to just teach them just how to play the notes,” he said. “I wanted to teach them the joy of music and through that the joy of life.”

Money raised will also help support Gateway’s meal service, which provides community meals Saturday’s and the first Friday every month. Winston has performed in benefit concerts and recorded music for beneficiary purposes for years. He said local food banks are always invited to participate in his shows. Winston just wants to help out. “Everybody says, ‘I want to do something,’” Winston said. “Well, I make records and concerts.” Winston said the difficult economy is one of the many reasons he performs at benefit concerts. Though a normal concert may have fewer attendees

because of difficult times, a benefit concert typically draws more, he said. But the pianist said money and music don’t equate. To Winston, money is imaginary, music is real. In terms of the tough economy, Winston is not looking for someone to blame. “I’m looking to clean it up,” he said. The concert will include a canned food drive. The food from the concert will help supply the food pantry at Day of Hope. Any remaining food will be donated to North Kitsap Fishline. The visit to Poulsbo is part of Winston’s first U.S. tour since the release of his latest album, “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2 — A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit,” March 20. The
album benefits the work of groups such as The Voice of the Wetlands organization, a volunteerbased nonprofit devoted to raising awareness and developing educational opportunities about the loss of the wetlands in southern Louisiana. The album also benefits efforts to heal the damage from the BP oil spill. Those attending the concert have Mark W. Costa of Gateway to thank. Costa worked with Winston on past events. “Anytime I’ve been in the position to share his [Winston’s] gift, I’ve felt compelled to do so,” Costa said. If you’re a Winston fan, you’ll know why his music is special. Though much of his music can be a decade or more old, Costa said

it remains unique and fresh today. Winston plays the piano hard, with a physicality that “is very unique,” Costa said. The solo pianist will even go so far as to reach into the piano and mute the chords with his hands. Walking out on stage, first-time Winston viewers may be surprised. The pianist dresses low-key, with a T-shirt or buttoned-down shirt and jeans. He typically doesn’t wear shoes and performs in his socks. He shares his art in a relaxed fashion, Costa said. However, “his technical skill is unlike [that] you will ever see.” Because Winston plays music based off the current season, he will play his “summer” show Sept. 8. Since 1972, Winston has released 12 solo piano albums, including “December” and “Autumn,” and has performed thousands of shows, which always include renditions of his most beloved solo piano works, according to his website. He also performs some of the late Vince Guaraldi’s “Peanuts” soundtrack pieces. The music Winston is writing now is primarily New Orleans R&B oriented, melodic folk piano and stride piano. His live show also includes performances on harmonica and Hawaiian slack key guitar.

See “fringe” and “handbag.” I’m going to keep those. “Purse” is the female version of a wallet in Englishspeak. And, of course, I bristle at the use of the word “pants” when trousers is meant rather than underpants. “Trousers” is such a good word anyway. I’ll still hang onto that one. Dylan is already getting telephone calls and has made plans to meet at the tree stump. “When did you meet them?” “Last night. I introduced myself so that I would have a wider range of friends.” I may have put this is a previous post, but I wrote it down on my phone and came across it again and I just love it as an example of believing and faith. To recap: I was meeting a friend in London Southbank. I have a terrible sense of direction, was slightly lost and worried about being late. I asked a man for directions

There were reasons to stay in London longer, which perhaps we did not value at the time but we did get to see through: Dylan was able to attend occupational therapy handwriting group classes, Dylan and Daisy got to finish their school year, we got to attend Ben’s master’s ceremony, we saw the Olympic torch relay in our town and, at the last minute, two days before we were scheduled to fly out, my paperwork arrived and I was able to attend my British citizenship ceremony. Cab Sauvignon: a wine so nice they crowned it twice C
abernet Sauvignon proudly carries the title of “the king of wines and the wine of kings.” It is the grape that made Bordeaux famous, particularly in the region known as the “left bank” of the Garonne River, where Cabernet Sauvignon plays a major role (on the “right bank” region, Merlot and Cabernet Franc tend to play a larger role than Cabernet Sauvignon). Cab was long thought to be an ancient variety indigenous to France, and while the grape’s origins are in Bordeaux, DNA research and other evidence indicate it didn’t show up until the 17th century, when a chance crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc took place. Cabernet Sauvignon helped put California — in particular, Napa Valley — on the map when its wines famously defeated the best of Bordeaux on the “Judgment of Paris” tasting in 1976. Today, many of California’s best and most expensive wines are Cab-based and come from Napa Valley. Washington was long

thought to be too cold to produce great Cab, but that myth has been easily dismissed in the past two decades. Quilceda Creek’s Cabernet Sauvignons have earned multiple perfect scores from The Wine Advocate, and Columbia Crest’s 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was deemed the best wine in the world in 2008 by Wine Spectator. Today, Cab is Washington’s No. 1 red grape, bringing in more than 30,000 tons as recently as 2010. Red Mountain and the Horse Heaven Hills are two of the top growing regions of Washington for Cab. Because of its elegant fruit, tannin and acidity, Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most ageable wines, though it usually can be enjoyed in its youth, too. It is a classic food-pairing wine, working well with everything from red meats to artisan pizzas to stews. Here are some of the

Ask for them at your favorite wine merchant or contact the producers directly. n Pondera Winery 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $28: This is a big, bold wine from ripe grapes, and it opens with aromas of boysenberries, black tea, blueberries, mint and fresh-out-of-theoven brownies. On the palate, it shows off rich flavors of black cherries, blackberries, blueberries and chocolate. It’s a big
wine in every way and should be enjoyed with grilled meats. n Chateau Ste. Michelle 2009 Canoe Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $28: This brings a nose of smoky cherry wood, root beer and shredded wheat along with ripe Bing cherry, blackberry, black olive and tobacco leaf. Inside, it’s a fruit bomb that explodes with more cherries and blackberries, trailed by cranberry juice, cherry cola and black olive. There’s supreme balance
and a remarkable farewell of anise and chocolate. n Pepper Bridge Winery 2008 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley, $55: This carries classic Cab scents of black cherry, cocoa powder, coffee and finely ground black pepper, but there’s also blackberry and boysenberry. Inside, there’s depth to the flavors of black currant and black cherry, which carries along chocolatecovered pomegranate and licorice. Its bold structure and notes of anise make for a finish that seems to
hang elegantly. n Martinez & Martinez Winery 2009 Dominio de Martinez Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $45: Fruit-driven aromas conjure up thoughts of blackberry ice cream, black currant jam, poached plums and pink peppercorns. There’s a rush of bright red currant flavor on the entry before it sweetens out in the midpalate with chocolate and cherry, then blackberry returns for the finish. n Michael Florentino Cellars 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain, $33: The nose shows sophistication with hints of black cherry, black currant jam, blueberry, vanilla, black olive and Swisher Sweet cigar. On the palate, the theme moves toward purple fruit with Marionberry, blueberry and pomegranate, bringing delicious acidity and resolved tannins. — Andy Perdue and Eric Degerman are the editors of Wine Press Northwest magazine. FEET FIRST
by
Dr. David M. Gent D.P.M.
The foot is designed in such a way that it rolls and disperses any shock caused by walking or running. This is called pronation. Those who have feet that roll inward too much are over-pronators. This happens when the foot continues to roll when it should be pushing off, causing excessive movement of the foot and lower leg. This movement can cause pain to the foot, shin and knee. When walking, shoes will tilt inward when they come into contact with a flat surface. Knock-knees and flat feet contribute to over-pronation. Under-pronation is called supination. Under-pronators have feet that don’t roll enough after ground contact. Extra stretching of calves, hamstrings, and quads will allow for greater flexibility. 1/2 tsp lemon juice 2 large Summer Squash or Zucchini ... or both! Instructions Use a julienne tool or your knife to make small spaghetti like strips from the squash and set aside in a chilled bowl. Use a food processor to make the pesto. Add the basil, purslane, olive oil, sea salt, pepper, lemon juice and pulse or chop to desired texture. I made this a little thicker but if you want it thinner add more olive oil. The pesto not only tastes great, but is highly nutritious! Try my new twist on pesto made with purslane, one of the most nutritious vegetables you can eat, packed with plant proteins and the highest source of omega 3! In addition, the Summer Squash — yellow or zucchini — is a good source of potassium, vitamin C and fiber. Please note that I didn’t
use garlic in this recipe, as with a traditional pesto. I wanted to be able to taste the fresh, slightly minty green and somewhat bitter flavors from the farm. I used lemon juice to brighten the flavors and preserve it if there were leftovers ... of which there were none! Plate the summer squash, top with pesto, a fresh sprig of purslane and ground black pepper. Another variation which is equally delightful: Add organic tomatoes tossed in Extra Virgin Olive Oil to get the full antioxidant benefit! — Lisa Garza’s Gluten Free Foodies blog is a popular feature of Sound Publishing Co.’s websites. The egg and you: In-moderation rule applies E
ating eggs can almost be as bad for your health as smoking, according to Canadian researchers whose findings reignited a long-standing controversy over the nutritional benefits and detriments of eggs — or, more specifically, egg yolks. For the study, which was published in the journal Atherosclerosis, a team of scientists from the University of Western Ontario’s medical school interviewed more than 1,200 participants about

their egg consumption as well as smoking habits, and then used ultrasound technology to measure the plaque build-up in their arteries. Why the combination of egg eating and smoking? aroundkitsap Bainbridge island Review Analysis shows Inslee won primary by landslide on home turf: When it comes to running for governor, there’s no place like home. Former congressman Jay Inslee easily outpaced his Republican rival Rob McKenna on the Democrat’s home turf of Bainbridge Island, according to an analysis of unofficial precinct returns in the primary election by the Review. Both Inslee and McKenna, a Bellevue resident and Washington’s current attorney general, will advance to the general election on Nov. 6. In the last election tally, conducted Aug. 21, Inslee was leading with 47 percent of the vote in the ninecandidate race for governor. That’s 664,531 ballots out of 1.4 million cast. The Review’s analysis shows that Inslee trounced McKenna with more than 60 percent of the vote in every precinct on Bainbridge Island, and also won by a large margin in the precincts of Suquamish and Indianola. — BainbridgeReview.com
Bremerton Patriot Pot moratorium to blaze on for six more months: The City of Bremerton is set to extend a moratorium on medical marijuana collective gardens for another six months. The city first instituted a six-month moratorium in September and then again in February. The current moratorium is set to expire
Aug. 31. The decision, though, likely won’t come for another six months. Allison Daniels, from the city’s Department of Community Development, said that dealing with permitting, zoning and other issues has been a priority in the last six months, but more time is needed to see “what other cities are doing and what kind of litigation is out there so that we can have a complete plan to present to the council.” — BremertonPatriot.com
Central Kitsap Reporter County helps local producers with “food chain” efficiency: Every day, Karen Olsen milks her small mixed herd Holstien and Guernsey cows at her South Kitsap farm. To keep her raw milk product the best and freshest for Kitsap County and other local markets, she works hard to cool the milk from 98 degrees to 45 degrees in 20 minutes. Kitsap County is not a big producer agriculturally, but the Kitsap Food Chain program seeks to cut energy costs and the carbon footprint to grow and delivering local food to local markets. In an effort to make Kitsap County’s “food chain” more energy efficient and affordable, the Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 13 approved a series of grants to local food producers. A total of $47,708 in of federal stimulus grants were awarded to eight local companies out of the nine requesting rebates for energy efficient upgrades. Local companies receiving energy
smoking appeared to be an appropriate marker, the researchers wrote in their report. Egg yolk is well known for its high dietary cholesterol content — about 185 to 210 milligrams, depending on size. (The recommended limit is 300 milligrams per day.) Over time, high cholesterol levels can cause plaque buildup in the arteries — as smoking does. In fact, the potential damage from egg yolk is about two-thirds as bad as that from tobacco use,

North Kitsap Herald Reward offered for Key Bank robbery suspect: A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect wanted for robbing Key Bank in Poulsbo June 7. The Seattle Times reports an $8,000 reward is being offered for anyone with information leading to the arrest. The suspect is described as a white male in his mid 20s, light brown hair, 5 feet 10 inches tall, slim build. He reportedly was wearing a light gray over dark gray striped DC-brand sweatshirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes, and a dirty white Hurley-brand ball cap, at the time of the Key Bank robbery. — NorthKitsapHerald.com
Port Orchard Independent New B&B truly is a destination: For Melissa Pigg, the location is an attribute worth accentuating. Pigg and her husband, Greg, run Wye Not Getaway Bed and Breakfast, which is closer to Belfair than Bay Street despite its Port Orchard address. Pigg said the bed and breakfast not only is a draw for out-of-state travelers, but for locals who are drawn to the prospect of feeling like they are getting away. The couple aims to take advantage of their natural setting during the summer. In addition to a small event deck overlooking the lake, there is a canoe and rowboat parked at the dock. — PortOrchardIndependent.com
said Dr. David Spence, the lead author of the study report, in a press release. Some critics have rejected the study’s findings, calling the research “flawed.” Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, said the research depended too heavily on participant’s self-reporting, which is notoriously unreliable, and other dietary and lifestyle factors were not or only insufficiently included. Similar concerns were raised by Dr. David Frid, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic. He didn’t think egg consumption should be equated to smoking, even though
both can contribute to bad heart health. Smoking, he said in an interview with ABCNews.com, causes arteries to become inflamed, which can result in the build-up of plaque in a different way than from cholesterol. Moreover, he said, people who like eggs often have a preference for other fatty foods. That must be taken into account as well, he said. In defense of the egg’s reputation, the Egg Nutrition Center and American Egg Board released a statement, emphasizing the wide range of health benefits from essential vitamins, minerals, protein and antioxidants richly provided by eggs, combined with a relatively low calorie count

of 70 calories on average. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognizes eggs as “a nutrient-dense food that can be part of a healthful diet.” Canada’s Food Guide also changed its recommendations to allow for higher egg consumption after the Canadian Egg Marketing Agency voiced objections to proposed guidelines. Unfortunately, this recent controversy leaves consumers uncertain about the safety of their egg dishes. In the face of all the pros and cons, it would appear that — as is so often the case when it comes to food — moderation is the best way to go. — Timi Gustafson R.D. is a clinical dietitian and author.
