Inaugural Lopez Cup Race By Duane Bordvick
Special to the Islands’ Weekly
The modern version of the Lopez Island Classic Yacht Race is in the record books. Tom Andrewes skippering “Madam Pele,” a Davidson 29, is the first recipient of the Lopez Island Cup, a perpetual award for first place. Race Organizer Russ Johnson is already planning for next year and hopes the race will attract
racers from all islands and beyond. On Saturday, Aug. 19, 11 yachts (ten from Lopez Island and one from Anacortes) competed for honors in this inaugural race off Lopez Island. All 11 boats raced in the same class and the fleet sailed under the Performance Handicap Racing System. Two intrepid skippers, Dick Behan on Rowdy and
Jay Simonson on his Cape Dory, chose to sail single handed. They were afforded even more handicap time. A four mile beat to weather for small sailboats in 15 to 20 knots of breeze with a big flood tide in San Juan Channel is no small task. For lack of a committee boat, the race was structured pursuit style, or a staggered start for all boats. The concept is simple. The handicaps are applied at the start of the race instead of the finish. Simply put, the slower boats start first and

rockfish populations. “Rockfish were an important food resource for islanders for thousands of years,” said Kwiaht director Russel Barsh. “But nearly all rockfish species have been fished out or threatened with extinction in the
last 50 years.” Unlike salmon and forage fish, rockfish are difficult and expensive to study because they are scattered and spend their adult lives in deep water, he added. Relatively little is known about their ecology or behavior because a few hours of underwater video observation can cost thousands of dollars. The solution, Barsh said, will be compact electronic packages that rest on the sea floor “like the NASA Mars lander” or are attached to individual living fish. Kwiaht’s biologists and volunteer computer and electronics engineers will be available to discuss rockfish ecology, “burning

questions,” data needs, and technical specifications with students from September through Jan. 31, 2013, when designs for proposed sensors and data loggers must be submitted for review. Up to five winning designs will be awarded $600 each to purchase materials for constructing, deploying and testing the devices in Wasp Passage. Additional funds will be available for boat support, SCUBA, and science advisers to install working devices by June 2013. Datagathering using this sensor array will be entrusted to the county’s high schools, forming a new countywide “community science” program for youth called Deep Reef Marine Health Observatories. Kwiaht welcomes collaborators both young and old to design and build additional rockfish monitoring capacity, working with island students. “Like the international space station,” Barsh said. “Deep Reef can be a platform for anyone interested in rockfish and the islands’ rocky reef fish communities.” The rockfish conservation technology challenge was made possible by a generous grant from the Charlotte Martin Foundation, and a donation by Orcas islander Win Rhodes. Natural History with Russel Barsh and Madrona Murphy Tintinnids – beautiful and strange life forms Smaller than a flea’s egg, this little creature looks like a hairy amoeba in a wine glass, busily darting to and fro, or thoughtfully twirling its crown of tiny hair-like cilia before making its next move. Strange as they look to us, tintinnids play an essential role in all freshwater and marine ecosystems. A few 100 species of tintinnids worldwide convert as much as one-fourth of the solar energy captured by single-celled photosynthetic organisms, into fatty biomass that the smallest multicellular animals can eat: a crucial link in the food web.
In some high nutrient or low oxygen aquatic ecosystems, including Fisherman Bay, they may process up to 90 percent of all primary (photosynthetic) production into tasty food for copepods and the tiny free-swimming larvae of worms, mollusks and crustaceans Tintinnids belong to a group of single-celled organisms that use hair-like cilia for propulsion. They spin their cilia like tiny propellers to generate strong currents that move them around, as well as suck prey into their mouths. Tintinnids are easily identified by their transpar-
ent vase-shaped or tubular “shell” or lorica, which is composed mainly of protein. Lorica shapes are speciesspecific. And loricae are tough enough to fossilize, so paleontologists know more about tintinnids than most other single-celled organisms. Tintinnids have been on earth for at least 635 million years, and probably longer, judging from fossils discovered in 2011. The function of loricae remains unclear, however. Loricae do not appear to be an effective defense against larger animals. Loricae may help tintinnids stay afloat, just as the strange shapes
and elongated spines (setae) of many diatoms increase their surface area and delay sinking. Some tintinnids may store potential food supplies by carrying bacterial passengers in their lorica. When food grows scarce in winter, tintinnids encyst and sink into the sediment to rest there until the water warms and phytoplankton prey are again abundant. Tintinnids can re-emerge, in vast hungry numbers, within days of a plankton bloom, and they appear to be one of the reasons (together with nutrient limitation) why blooms do not last very long. In fact, dinoflagellates and diatoms may
Learn more about coal and tar sands at upcoming meetings On Tuesday, Aug. 28, 5 - 7 p.m., at the library community room there will be a showing of the documentary “A Dirty Business,” revealing the social and environmental costs of coal, operational alternatives for a renewable energy future and what it means to remain dependent on a 19th century technology. The film features Robert Kennedy, Bill McKibben, Dr. James Hansen and former CEO of Massey Don Blankenship. The film will be followed by a presentation by San Olson, a former naval officer. He will be discussing the types of boats, transits, inherit risks of the proposed shipments, through the waters surrounding the San Juan Islands. Leading scientists and activists on the issues of coal and tar sands extraction and transportation will convene on Sunday, Sept. 9, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Lopez Center for Community and the Arts to give a talk on the potential impacts of coal and tar sands shipping in the San Juans. This community event aims to inform and inspire actions so islanders can make well-informed decisions about steps
they can take in response to the proposed plan to export coal and tar sands via the San Juan waters. This event is sponsored by FRIENDS of the San Juans in collaboration with Lopez No COALition and Safe Shipping Alliance of the Salish Sea. For more info, visit www.lopeznocoalition.org.
have evolved algal toxins principally to ward off tintinnids, although sadly these chemical weapons can also be toxic to fish and other vertebrate animals—including us. All you need to hunt for tintinnids is a jar of fresh seawater, a coffee filter, and a microscope that can attain at least 200 times magnification. Use
the filter to concentrate the sample before examining it. Or follow Kwiaht’s Facebook page to learn more about the beautiful and strange life forms that inhabit our coastal waters! And if you see strange colors in the water, leave a message at 468-ITOX (468-4869) so that a local volunteer can get a sample for identification.

Cantwell back to the beginning By Steve Wehrly Journal reporter
Addressing local Democrats at the San Juan County Fair on Friday, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA)
recalled she was back again where it all began in 2000, when she first ran for the Senate against Slade Gorton. The current junior senator from Washington (Sen.
Patty Murray is senior senator) told an audience of 40 in the main building of the fair, “This was where I first campaigned for the U.S. Senate, right here in this building 12 years ago.”
A few months later, she won that underdog campaign by 229 votes. Twelve years later, in the 2012 primary, she outpolled Republican Sen. Michael Baumgartner by more than 352,000 votes, a margin of over 25 points in the eightcandidate primary.
That margin may explain why the Cantwell campaign felt they could spend a few days in the San Juan Islands to recharge and raise money before the final months of campaigning. Cantwell greeted supporters individually before delivering brief remarks reassuring local voters that local issues are on her mind. In response to questions about local environmental issues, Cantwell, a member of the Public Lands and Forests Subcommittee and Chairwoman of the Energy subcommittee of the Senate Commerce Committee, reminded the crowd that “I co-authored the bill” (which stalled) to create the San Juan Islands National Conservation Area and that “Rick Larsen and I got Secretary [of the Interior] Salazar to propose that the
President sign an Executive Order” to designate the conservation area lands as a National Monument. Pressed whether she’s done everything she could to convince the president to sign that order, Cantwell said she’d done everything but “get a tattoo” to show the president she supported the idea. Asked about the proposal to build a coal port near Bellingham, Cantwell insisted proponents “need to answer some very tough questions” before the development is approved, but did not say she opposed the coal port idea outright. “We must make this a collaborative effort to protect our marine waterways,” she concluded. Dan Matthews, the Republican candidate See cantwell, page 5
16th Annual Lopez Studio Tour
In 1996, Lopez artists Christa Malay and Corwin Martin started the Lopez Island Studio Tour with a few artists who all agreed to open their studios to display and sell their work, while showing the public where they worked. By 2003 the tour had expanded to 15 studios and 20 artists and this year there are 29 studios and 22 artists. And a group of Lopez artists on the 2011 tour said people seem happy to buy art at the tour. They estimated the total art sales for the event with 46 participating artists was easily $100,000. The Lopez Island Studio Tour gives people an opportunity to experience first-hand the quality and craftsmanship of the island’s many artists on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1 and 2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The self-guided tour is free and accessible by car or bicycle. opposing incumbent U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), also campaigned at the fair Friday afternoon. He was disappointed when told that Sen. Murray was apparently not at the fair. “We served together on the Shoreline
school board for a while,” he said, “So I’d love to say hello again.” Matthews, who will be back next Saturday for the Republican Party’s Red Barn Event, says “I’m not discouraged,” by primary election results showing him with 28.7 percent of the vote, almost 29 percentage points behind Larsen’s 57.3 percent. He figures
he’ll surprise people by getting closer to Larsen in the November general election, then run again in 2014. He said he’s committed to at least two campaigns. Dan Matthews expects to be back campaigning at the fair in 2014. Maria Cantwell may not be back until 2018 – unless she returns as a candidate for vice president before then.
Obituary: Aladeen Cochran Born Stella Aladeen Bray on January 29, 1926 in West Point Park near Olympia, Wash., to Walter and Pearlee Bray. Aladeen grew up in South Bay, Wash., on a small farm and was the third of nine children. She is survived by four siblings. In 1939 she moved to Burien where she attended Highline High School, worked parttime as a waitress. During World War II, because of her small size, she was employed at Boeing as a “rivet bucker” in the wings of airplanes. Around 1943 she moved with her family to Lopez Island to the property where the golf course is now located. She married her first husband, John Oliver Cochran in 1945 and settled in to life on Lopez as a housewife, running the family farm while her husband John fished during the summer. She also worked at Richardson Store for several years. Aladeen and John had four children, Larry Oliver, Susanne Jeanne, Lonny Eugene and Lyn Edward. Aladeen was very involved in her community and taught Sunday School and was a 4-H leader in several projects over the years. In the early 1960’s Lopez started a preschool program and Aladeen was the first teacher in the program, teaching in a house donated by the Ellis Ranch. She later worked at Lopez School as a teacher’s assistant in the special education programs

and during the summer vacations worked on maintenance at the school. Children and their education were very important to Aladeen and she went on to help sponsor two high school scholarships, the Joe Fox Memorial fund for music and the Perseverance and Determination Award given to Lopez High School seniors. After being single for many years she married Lawrence Coffelt in 1987. They spent their retirement years together happily, traveling when they could, collecting treasures along the way and most always surrounded by family and grandchildren. Aladeen loved her family first especially her grandchildren, friends, children, the outdoors, music, learning and education, good food, picnics, potlucks and Lopez Island. She loved spending as much of her time as possible with family and friends chatting, visiting, sharing stories and a good meal. She met life with determination, a positive attitude,

The 2011 tour generated more than $17,000, vital for LCCA operational expenses. This revenue, together with other income, allows Lopez Center to keep event prices low so all Lopezians can enjoy the many and varied yearlong LCCA happenings. The 2012 tour will showcase eight homes belonging to (from north to south): the Collins, the DiNicolas, the Walters/Dicksons, the Bollinger/Sewards, the Dolans, Raiti Waerness and the Whettens. The photo, shown left, is of the Bollinger/Seward farm. Construction of the building complex by Mr. and Mrs. Niels Nielsen began in 1919, following Niels inheritance of the property in 1913. On Lopez, Niels met his wife, Hanna, who was a nanny to the Kjargaard family. Niels and Hanna are the grandparents of Lopez’s own Linda Rose. Linda and Ken Rose’s property adjoins the farmhouse property. Steve and Christina, present owners, purchased the property in 2009 and immediately began renovating both the buildings and the farm’s animal and vegetable productivity with TLC. Their goal is to restore the house and outbuildings to their original conditions. This farm and other homes on the tour provide viewers with a variety of architectural styles See TOUR, page 8

Scores of islanders and visitors alike delighted at the Trashion-Fashion Show at Lopez Center, Aug. 12. Ensembles were created from materials as varied as cat food bags and building plans, burlap, garbage bags, disposable plastic tablecloths and bird netting. The event, designed to humorously demonstrate the art and value of recy-
cling, repurposing and reusing, celebrates creation of the new Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District. LSWDD represents the advent of communitybased waste management operating in keeping with Lopez values. Dozens participated as models or worked behind the scenes to bring the fashion show and silent auction to Lopez Center. Models ranged in age from two to almost 80
