Andrea Larson and Danielle Skinner were both sophomores when they learned Redmond High School (RHS) would be adding ninth graders to the population in two years’ time. While it makes sense to bring freshmen into the fold since that’s when grades begin to count for college and beyond, neither knew what this would look like. Larson even admits she was skeptical. She said the idea of bringing in an entire new class to the alreadycrowded RHS was overwhelming. The addition of freshmen at the high school is part of a grade reconfiguration that will bring Lake Washington School District (LWSD) to a K-5, 6-8, 9-12 system. Larson and Skinner are now incoming seniors and part of the school’s leadership class who have been working with RHS staff and administration to prepare the school for all the changes that will take place this school year, which begins Tuesday.

On Sept. 7, LifeWise Health Plan of Washington and the Marymoor Velodrome Association (MVA) are teaming up to welcome home track cyclist Jennie Reed from the London 2012 Olympics.
Reed began her cycling career at the Velodrome at Marymoor Park near Redmond when she was 16. She was part of the U.S. team that won the silver medal in Women’s Team Pursuit, a three-woman track cycling event. Next Friday’s event will honor Reed

Lake Washington School District student math scores soar While state test scores showed improvement in math and science, Lake Washington School District (LWSD) students showed even greater increases in math while science scores exceeded reading and math scores in fifth grade for the first time. Reading scores showed mostly modest gains with a few losses that paralleled state scores. Writing scores showed greater gains than state results for two of three grades tested. “Our staff and students worked hard to improve in math while maintaining or even improving on high standards in other subjects,” said LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce. “Our elementary teachers in particular have spent the
last two years implementing a new math curriculum and we are now seeing gains in math performance.” Math scores showed increases of between 3.1 percent and 6.6 percent more students at standard in grades three through eight on the Measurements of Student Progress. Those gains exceeded any gains in state test scores in grades three through seven. The greatest difference was in grade five, where district scores increased from 75.4 percent at standard last year to 81.5 percent this year, a 6.1 percent increase. State scores increased from 61.3 percent at standard to 63.7 percent at standard, a 2.4 percent increase. In eighth grade, district scores increased from 69.7 percent
at standard to 73.1 percent, while state scores increased from 50.4 percent to 55.4 percent at standard, a slightly greater increase. On the End of Course exams in math, 81.4 percent of district students were at standard on the Math Year 1 exam compared to 71 percent at the state level. For EOC Year 2, 88.5 percent of district students were at standard compared to 79.1 percent statewide. Science scores gained at the state level in both grades where it is tested in the Measurements of Student Progress, grades five and eight. Scores in fifth grade in LWSD rose from 80.5 percent to 87 percent, outstripping both the reading and math results in that grade for
the first time. State scores rose significantly in fifth grade, from 55.7 percent to 66.1 percent. Eighth grade scores slipped slightly in Lake Washington, from 85.2 percent to 84.9 percent while state scores rose from 61.6 percent to 66.3 percent. On the new EOC biology exam, 81.3 percent of LWSD students were at standard, compared to 64.1 percent at the state level. “Science continues to be a growing strength in our district,” said Pierce. “We are seeing the greatest gains in the systems area, which has to do with systems thinking. How-
ever, the greatest difference from state scores comes in the area of inquiry, which focuses on the experimental process. Our teachers intentionally teach the experimental process beginning with the early grades and it is reflected in our scores.” District reading scores tended to mirror gains or losses with state scores, with most grades scoring similarly to last year. One exception is 10th grade reading, where district scores improved slightly from 91.9 percent at standard to 92.2 percent at standard while the state numbers fell from 82.6 per-
cent to 81.1 percent. Both the district and state scores gained significantly on the seventh grade test. District writing scores improved in two of the three grades tested. Writing scores for the district’s seventh graders rose from 87.0 percent to 88.8 percent while state scores remained flat at 71.0 percent. Scores for both the district and state dropped slightly at grade four. District 10th grade writing scores reached 95.2 percent, up from 93.6 percent, while state scores fell from 86.3 to 85.2 percent.

Thanks to the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin, things you remember as happening “just yesterday” are ancient history to entering freshman. In 1988, the staff created the Mindset List to remind professors to beware of dated references. Prepare to become a geezer. To the class of 2015: • Andre the Giant, River Phoenix, Frank Zappa, Arthur Ashe and the Commodore 64 have always been dead. • The only significant labor disputes in their lifetimes have been in major league sports. • There have nearly always been at least two women on the U. S. Supreme Court, and women have always commanded U.S. Navy ships. • “Don’t touch that dial!”…. I would like to challenge the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) to create an elementary school schedule and calendar that is friendly to working parents. With early-release Wednesdays, eight noon release days, Thursday-Friday-Monday breaks, and LEAP days spread throughout the year, it is a challenge for any hourly employee to hold down a job. I realize that with continued cuts to educational budgets, we won’t be getting 180 six-anda-half hour school days, but I firmly believe that LWSD can come up with a balanced compromise. Why not have the same length school day 180 days of the year and take advantage of the flexibility of having potential meeting time for teachers, parents, and faculty any school day? Our school system is not in place to provide “day care” so that parents can work, but we need help in caring for and educating our children while paying our bills and mortgages. Fortunately, LWSD has fantastic families, teachers, administrators, and board members who I hope are ready to address this ongoing challenge and create a friendlier calendar for the 2013-14 school year. Advice to new super: Follow the ways of L.E. ‘Bud’ Scarr Three large, local school districts are currently in transition periods with new superintendents coming on board. In some districts this brings a sense of sadness

as the previous super will be missed. In others it causes a renewed sense of hopefulness; things might get better; a weak district culture might regain its pride. In all districts it causes anxiety to arise, a natural result of significant change. I’d like to offer some honorable counsel to Dr. Banda (Seattle), Dr. Pierce (Lake Washington) and Dr. Mills in the Bellevue School District. This “advice” is based upon 33 years in the profession working under eight very different superintendents including the man who likely is considered the finest superintendent in the history of public education in our state, Dr. L.E. “Bud” Scarr. Bud served as the super in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) for many years. If Bud wasn’t the finest then he is certainly among the very small handful of “finest” given the results that accrued and continue in the LWSD due to his vision, efforts and influence. I had the honor and the privilege of working for Bud for 10 years. Bud surrounded himself with respected, knowledgeable, compassionate leaders. His immediate assistants held deep experience in schools, successful experience. They supported principals, teachers, the community and, they supported Bud. This created a vibrant, risk-taking environment, one that worked for the benefit of kids. They told Bud the truth, even when they knew that he wouldn’t like to hear it. But, even when he didn’t like what he was hearing he listened. And Bud “told the truth.” He expected everyone else to do likewise. This created a district culture of “truth-telling.” When a super does not tell the truth this can quickly come to characterize the district with tragic results for the staff and, therefore, for children. So, be honest; everyone notices when you are not. Bud held very high expectations for everyone

in the organization and, importantly, the expectations never varied from day to day. You always knew what was expected of you. It was always a great deal of work but the culture of the organization supported you. “Don’t walk past incompetence,” was one of Bud’s mantras. It didn’t matter if a weak staff member was a close friend of one of his close colleagues or the daughter or son of a close friend. The expectation was that all staff members, certified, classified, administrative, would work to the highest standards. If you didn’t, you were gone, quickly. All of my colleagues and I were jacked-up on occasion. It made us better at our jobs with good results for kids. “Get over it!” Bud spoke frankly; he expected others to do the same. And when you disagreed there would be some tense moments that might cause concern among those doing the disagreeing. But, when it was done it was over and done with Bud. One day he and I had a knock-down battle in his office. When the fire died I stepped into the men’s room to take a break. Bud stepped outside for some fresh air. As I came out of the men’s room Bud was coming back in from outdoors. He looked at me and said, “Hey, how are those daughters of yours?” The battle was over, never brought up again. It didn’t linger causing me anxiety that might impact my ability to work on behalf of kids, families, teachers and secretaries. I admired him greatly for this; others did as well. Once again, if the superintendent holds a grudge it impacts everyone, not for the best. I wish the three news superintendents the very best. One final piece of advice: Seek out others who knew Bud, ask questions and listen. You’ll be better off with a bit of Bud in you. So will everyone with whom you serve. Jeff Newport, Duvall

A few reflections on the 2012 Republican National Convention completely shredded our safety net. Ryan also characterized the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) as a failure during his speech. He didn’t mention that in 2009, just after ARRA had passed with bipartisan support, Ryan sent letters to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking for ARRA funds on behalf of two companies based in his state, Wisconsin. Guess he doesn’t want anyone to know about that. And, like many other speakers who had preceded him at the podium, Ryan took a swipe at President Obama for pointing out that all businesses benefit from public investments in roads, bridges, schools, universities, the Internet and other services. The president was correct to say that nobody makes it on their own in America. All successful entrepreneurs make use of the infrastructure that the taxpayers of this country have paid for. America is where it is today
because previous generations patriotically pooled their resources to get things done. This progressive tradition dates all the way back to the founding of our nation. Unfortunately, it’s a tradition that Republicans want to upend. They claim we’ll all be better off if we dismantle our public services and sell off our public infrastructure. They’re wrong. spent like there was no tomorrow. They speedily wiped out the surplus that President Clinton had left them and kept on going. No exaggeration: Since he was elected to the U.S. House more than a decade ago, Ryan has voted to add a staggering total of $6.8 trillion to our national debt. That’s right, $6.8 trillion. Trillion, with a t! Most of that debt was created during the Bush years, when Republicans pushed through multiple rounds of budget-busting tax cuts, overhauled Medicare Part D without paying for it, and financed the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan on America’s credit card. What’s more, Ryan’s disingenuously named “Path to Prosperity” budget would pile on even more debt, because Republicans have made it plainly clear they are unwilling to either reduce defense spending or raise taxes. The position they’ve adopted means we’d definitely be spending money we don’t have under a Romney/Ryan administration – even if we

“I have never seen opponents so silent about their record, and so desperate to keep their power,” Ryan said early on. “They’ve run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division are all they’ve got left.” Fear and division? Those are good words to describe how Republicans like to campaign. Contrary to what Ryan says, Democrats have many ideas for strengthening our country. Next week, Democrats will come together in Charlotte, N.C. to approve a platform that will lay out the party’s vision for a stronger America - including a plan to lessen money’s influence in politics. The platform is likely to call for passage of the Disclose Act and a constitutional amendment to overturn Supreme Court decisions which wrongly equate corporations to people and money to speech. Ryan also had the gall to accuse Democrats of being fiscally irresponsible: “They have no answer to this simple reality: We need to stop spending money we don’t have. It’s not that hard,” he said. All I could do when I heard that pronouncement was laugh. It’s not that hard, eh? When Ryan’s party controlled Congress and the White House, they

his past week, the Republican Party held its 40th national convention in Tampa, Fla, where more than 2,000 delegates nominated Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to be their standard bearers for president and vice president. I watched much of the convention on C-SPAN, because although I disagree with just about everything Republicans stand for, I strongly believe in a free exchange of ideas. At press time, Romney had yet to address the convention, but most of the other scheduled speakers had. So far, I’ve been most impressed by the women the Republican Party has brought to the podium. Condoleeza Rice, Ann Romney, and Susana Martinez each delivered very stirring speeches. Rice, in particular, energized the delegates while managing to avoid crass jokes or petty insults. Romney should have picked her to be his running mate. Chris Christie, Tim Pawlenty, Mike Huckabee and John McCain bombed in comparison. I didn’t care for Ryan’s acceptance speech. To say that it was dishonest would be an understatement. I can’t respond to everything Ryan said here, but I’ll cover a few lowlights.

When Redmond resident Kristin Kalning took her son Binyam to see the Massive Monkees for the first time earlier this year, he fell in love with the Seattlebased breakdancing crew. It’s no surprise since the 4-year-old enjoys dancing at home with mom. “He likes to dance and he likes to do gymnastics,” Kalning said. And since that first show months ago, she and Binyam have been following the Massive Monkees and
performance to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” This is Great Day of Play’s second year and Redmond’s events and marketing administrator Lisa Rhodes said the event has at least doubled in the number of attendees and participants in the 5K fun run/walk. In other areas such as the 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament, she said they just about quadrupled — going from eight teams to 31. Other activities included a 3-on-3 soccer tournament, skate clinics for kids

Rhodes said the goal of the event is to address childhood obesity and get people exercising. “We want to get families out and moving,” she said. Matt and Suzy Hoover — formerly of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” — spoke at Great Day of Play and said being active and playing are good ways to stay healthy, but are also an opportunity for families to bond and spend time together. They said in the current economy, it’s easy to stop being active as people cancel their gym memberships to save money. However, the couple said there are other options such as walking along local trails and playing on the playgrounds since there is no rule that states parents aren’t allowed to play on the equipment. “There’s so many little things we can do,” Matt said. Great Day of Play’s programming provided a variety of activities and Rhodes said the goal of bringing in performers such as Massive Monkees exposes the community to something different — breakdancing — they probably weren’t familiar with before. ing is “something with a little edge” and different from typical organized sports such as soccer, baseball or basketball. She added that it also gives kids another artistic outlet to express themselves. While Kalning and Binyam were enjoying the moves of Massive Monkees, Lydia Liu and her daughter Peishan Peng had a great time during one of Skate 425’s clinics as they took one of the skateboards for a spin. This was Peishan’s first time on a skateboard, but that didn’t intimidate her. “She likes to try anything new,” Liu said about her daughter. Liu said she likes to give her daughter as many chances as possible to be active and participate in outdoor activities — especially when the weather is nice, as it was on Friday. “We cherish every day of sunshine,” Liu said. City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione said in addition to getting people moving, Great Day of Play is a great way to wind down the summer and get ready for the upcoming school year. It’s also a fun and cheap activity for the whole family and they don’t have to travel far to enjoy it. “People are looking for activities to do in their own home town,” Marchione said.

With the addition of freshmen to the population, half of the students at the high school will be brand new — as opposed to the previous one-third. This meant the
staff and leadership students have been looking at how to make the transition for the incoming underclassmen as well as returning upperclassmen as smooth as possible. “Being in leadership, I knew there was a lot of stuff to do,” Larson said. The group looked at every aspect of student life to see what type of effect about 450-475 additional students — for a total of about 1,860

students — would have. One of the biggest things they have had to figure out is how to run school assemblies since the RHS gym is too small to accommodate a bigger student body. Larson and Skinner said a couple of options they have come up with have been running assemblies twice for half of the school at a time and streaming video of assemblies live so people can watch them in their classrooms. “The assemblies were definitely a challenge,” Skinner said.

Other small changes include a passing period that is now one minute longer to make up for the increased traffic and a bigger building as RHS will also see the opening of a new 30,000 square-foot wing this fall to accommodate a larger student population. Lockers in particularly tight areas have also been removed to make
administration. After that, students will attend abbreviated classes to meet their teachers and run through their schedules. Passing time will be 10 minutes so students can figure out where they’re going. The day will conclude with a jamboree in the school courtyard where clubs, sports and other activities will have tables set up so students can learn more and figure out what they may want to join. RHS principal Jane Todd added that new 11th and 12th graders will also be on campus on Tuesday. There will be a pizza party and these students will have the opportunity to meet with administrators and ask questions in an informal setting. Todd said the leadership students have been very involved in preparing incoming students. They have visited the junior high schools last year to speak with eighth and ninth graders about high school life

The twostory addition contains 14 classrooms including two science labs and one art classroom. Classrooms at the end of the halls also have the ability to open up so teachers can team up and collaborate. There will also be a new auxiliary gymnasium, which will be used for physical education classes and potential overflow during lunch if the newly expanded cafeteria becomes too crowded.

and answer questions. In addition, Todd said a group of students also created a “student survival guide” for newcomers, which covers topics ranging from navigating the hallways to lunchtime etiquette. The guide will be distributed to students on the first day of school.
NEW STAFF IN A NEW SCHOOL
While students have been working on making a smooth cultural transition, RHS staff and administration have also been working on ensuring a seamless academic transition for the incoming freshmen and sophomores. RHS has about 25 teachers who will either be brand new this fall or have transferred from the district’s junior high schools — which are now middle schools. There are about 100 teachers at RHS. RHS staff — a quarter of which is new — attended a retreat on Monday and new teachers have been paired with returning teachers who will act as mentors throughout the school year. Todd said their core curriculum is decided by the district, but RHS has expanded its elective options to accommodate the growing population. She added that there will be language arts and social studies teaching teams at the ninth and 10th grade levels. RHS has also added a class designed to help freshmen and sophomores prepare for college by teaching them how to take tests and other skills.

With Lake Washington School District's (LWSD) grade reconfiguration to a K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 system, two-thirds of students in middle schools will be new to their school this year. Staff and administrators have been working the last two years to ensure they have a smooth transition. Anne Balicki, associate principal at the newly renamed Evergreen Middle School (EMS) in Redmond, said one thing they have done is adapted a national program called Where Everyone Belongs (WEB). As a community filled with tremendous recreational opportunities, Redmond was missing one very important asset. “It seemed like there was a big choir-shaped hole in the community somewhere,” said Laurie Hughes, founding artistic director of Redmond Chorale. Recognizing the need for a choir, Hughes began the task of building a vocal community. Filled with motivation and passion, she willed the choir into life. “Her enthusiasm was so catchy that I jumped at the chance to work with her,” reflected Ceytha
Bruner, secretary of the choir. The chorale quickly bloomed into sudden existence. Redmond Chorale is a unique charitable organization. Funds from the concerts are gifted to charities across the Eastside. This year’s holiday concert will be devoted to Helping Hands for the Disabled, a nonprofit organization that provides housing for disabled adults. Besides helping the community, the choir also brings together a diverse group of people. “It forces you to get out of your comfort zone a bit and meet new people,” said Kristen Thompson, chair of the choir board. Turnout numbers and morale is on the rise for the Redmond High School (RHS) football and coach Jeff Chandler is hoping that will help the Mustangs get back into the win column this fall. Redmond went 0-9 in Chandler’s second season at the helm last season, but with more than 100 kids turning out for football, the across-the-board talent has improved, along with the Mustangs’ team chemistry, the coach said. “The goal is to win games and get back into the win column,” said Chandler, who went 4-5 in his first season at Redmond in 2010. “You do that through skill development … but you also do it with morale, increasing our numbers and the whole character aspect.” Chandler said when he first arrived at Redmond, there were only 17 players who turned out. That number has increased to 115, including 25 new freshmen as RHS adds ninth graders to the school as part of the Lake Washington School District’s (LWSD) new grade reconfiguration. “We started two years ago and had only 17 kids,” Chandler said. “The morale was so low for football. … The first objective is to get more kids out and the second objective is to get them strong and conditioned.” Now, it’s time to win, Chandler said. “We want to win games, that’s obviously our objective, but you have to improve every day for that to happen,” he said. The Mustangs will take their first crack at victory this season when they face a formidable Mercer Island team, which plays in the 3A Kingco league, tonight at Mercer Island. Carpenter, who missed all of last season with a broken back, “is going to be a kid who has the potential to stand out at receiver,” Chandler said. “He’s highly competitive,” the coach said. “He works hard at his craft. He really takes care of himself and is strong willed.” As for the running attack, Redmond will use a committee approach with seniors Parker Cagle, Eli Grady and Phil Yoo, along with junior Bryce Steckler all getting a chance to tot the football. Chandler said all four are in the mix for the Mustangs’ rushing game and each one of them could get a chance to start depending who has the hot hand. Chandler said the key to the Mustangs’ success will hinge on the offensive and defensive lines, both of which are undersized, but possess potential. Boris will be a force on both sides of the line and Boker has been a “real bright spot in the spring time for us at defensive end,” Chandler said. Junior Ian Seabrooks, who started on the offensive line as a sophomore, is Redmond’s biggest boy up front at 6-foot-5, 280 pounds and will be one of Wheat’s prime protectors. The talent level has certainly improved from last year and so has the energy and the focus, Chandler said. The Mustangs had 52 players attend a summer camp at Evergreen State College, where players built up morale and team chemistry. “There seems to be a much greater feeling of team,” Chandler said. “We’re more together and on the same page and that’s really a key in our success.” It won’t be easy for the Mustangs, who take on 3A Kingco powers Mercer Island and Interlake in their first games of the season before taking on Ballard in its 4A Kingco opener on Sept. 14 at home. “Anyone who is playing in the Kingco conference is competing against the best in the state — 3A or 4A,” Chandler said of the arguably the best two conferences in the state. “There’s nothing easy. If you are going to participate, you gotta step up.”

Botox began as a treatment for eye twitching and later progressed into a treatment for wrinkles and migraines. Now this muscle-inhibiting toxin is being touted as a treatment for “bruxism,” or tooth grinding. The nocturnal habit is often attributed to anxiety and stress, treatment of which may reduce or alleviate bruxism. If the habit continues, the grinding can wear away tooth enamel and even result in tooth fractures. However, using Botox to treat bruxism is not recommended. It has not been approved by the FDA for this purpose and may not even work. If it does work, the effect is transient. It is better to stick with a custom-made night guard that is proven to prevent bruxism’s corrosive effects. Dental guards may take a little getting used to, but they are effective, last for years, and do not cause complications.

After about a year of selling wine and beer online around the country, one Redmond business is opening its doors to the local community for educational tasting sessions. For about a month, LetsPour has been holding weekly wine tastings at 2887 152nd Ave. N.E. in Redmond’s Overlake Business Park. While LetsPour events introduce people to new wines like other tastings, they also provide information about the featured wines including winery history, winemakers, techniques and processes, regional background and more. Tastings are free and every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Raghav Kher, founder and chief executive officer of LetsPour, said the tastings were started as a result of feedback from their online customers. “Our customers have been asking for that,” he said. Kher said LetsPour offers customers deals on wine and beer online and they ship to 36 states. They have about 100,000 users and in addition to purchasing products, they can also post ratings and reviews of their purchases and share their thoughts with the rest of the LetsPour community. The company held its first tasting about three weeks ago and Laura Parkinson, who also works at LetsPour, said they are slowly growing, with the first couple of events bringing in about 35-40 people. Wine tasters can also purchase any of the wines
feature Italian and Washington wines as well as special varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignons and merlots. “There are so many great wineries out there,” Kher said. “Our job is to find these little gems.”
