Stennis deploys early for Middle East Return to region doubles carrier capacity, keeps U. S. presence up By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com
The U.S.S. John C. Stennis Departed Naval Base Kitsap on Aug. 27 with more than 2,000 sailors on board for what is set to be an eightmonth deployment to the Middle East. Sailor Jacob Gardner cradled his one-month-old daughter Attica and said goodbye to his wife, Anne, as he prepared to board the carrier. A twelve year veteran of the Navy, he said this trip to the Middle East is his sixth deployment. Gardner said he would miss his family, but said his departure was his job and a matter of duty. “It is something that we have to do,” he said. “It is what we signed up for.” Anne Gardner said it was difficult with the recent birth of Attica, but said the family would make it through his absence. “It makes it extra difficult to say goodbye,” Anne Gardner said. “But we will face it head on and get through it.” Gardner said he felt he was leaving his daughter in good hands with his wife.

Families and friends of the service men and women of the USS John C. Stennis say their farewells as the vessel prepares to depart for the Middle East. The Stennis is slated for an eighth-month deployment, which is twice as long as originally anticipated and also comes four months sooner than planned when the vessel arrived on March 2.
“This is our first child and it makes it difficult,” he said. “But, I have faith in her,” The Stennis is slated for an eighth month deployment, which is twice as long as originally anticipated and also comes four month sooner than planned when the aircraft carrier arrived on March 2. The Stennis will replace the U.S.S Enterprise in the Middle East. The Stennis was originally set to deploy at the end of the year to U.S. Pacific Command. Officials at the U.S. Department of Defense said the accelerated deployment is not aimed at any specific threat. Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said the deployment was meant to expand military options in the area. “This is a very important region for our defense strategy,” Little said. “We’ve had a presence in the region for decades and we have a range of interests that this extension of our capabilities will support.” United States Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta spoke See Stennis, A7
Adrian is all smiles at street-naming ceremony Bremerton names street for local Olympic champion By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com
The Stewart kids all brought swim caps. Tyler, 8, and Curtis, 6, brought their bright orange Olympic Aquatic Center caps while Emerson, 4, not quite yet old enough to join the big leagues, brought her bright green “friendly-monster” cap. Smiling, Olympic Gold medalist Nathan
Adrian signed them all, telling Emerson that he particularly liked hers. Another Bremerton youngster, 4-yearold Marcus Jayden, brought Adrian a handmade neon green sign with a shaky handwritten “Way to go Nathan” note written across the poster board. Adrian began to sign it, but was told that Marcus wanted him to have it.

Love of animals leads to top awards at fair Girl takes top prizes with 4-H sheep named Macaroni and Cheese By Patrick McDonough Reporter
Ryleigh Randall loves animals, and her fondness showed at the Kitsap County Fair. Randall, 12, of Port Orchard won nine awards at the fair this year, including a Champion Market Animal prize and a Reserve Champion award for her 5-monthold Suffolk sheep given the auspicious moniker of
Macaroni and Cheese. A 4-H Club member for four years, Randall won the awards Aug. 25 in the registered sheep competition. The 4-H club is a youth development organization designed to build leadership and other life skills through activities such as raising animals and participating in competitions with the animals. Randall said she enjoyed raising the sheep and said that competing and win-
ning will help with her college education. “I like doing this because it helps gain money for my college fund, and I love animals,” she said. Joyce Harrell, the superintendent for the competition, said Suffolk sheep are judged primarily on their meat. “The sheep compete against each other to exemplify the best quality of that breed,” she said. “Meat sheep are judged primarily on their carcass.” During competition, a See Top Awards, A10

Brian Dent gets all shook up about Elvis Presley. When the 10-year-old hits the stage as “Little Elvis,” the audience follows suit. Dent, a Bremerton resident, gyrated across the stage Aug. 25 at the Kitsap County Fair. Performing some of the King’s signature moves and singing renditions of hits such as “Love Me Tender” and “Heart Break Hotel,” Dent had the audience clapping, cheering and singing along. Dent has been performing as
Elvis on stage since the age of 5, when he sang at a kindergarten talent show. Since that time, he has performed at fairs, air shows, car shows and hundreds of other events. He said he enjoyed performing as Elvis, especially when the crowds got loud. “I always love it when the audience is screaming and yelling,” he said. “It makes me get more excited and happy.” The first time heard he heard Elvis, he was 4 years old and asked his dad who the singer was. Sammy Dent, Brian’s father played all types of music, but

Elvis captured his son’s attention immediately. “I played some of Elvis’ music, and he said ‘That guy is good. Who is he?’” For the younger Dent, there is something about Elvis. “I think it is the style and the music,” he said. “I think he is good at singing and he has a cool look.” The upbeat nature of the music can be contagious, Dent said. Vet job fair set for Safeco on Sept. 7
Staff Hire America’s Heroes is set to host a Career Day at Seattle’s Safeco Field beginning at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7. The event features a recruiting fair, skills workshops, career coaching, skills matching and a mixer. Vets and those interested in exhibiting can register online at www.HireAmericasHeroes.org Organizers note that corporations such as Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks, among many others, will be on-hand to connect with veteran job seekers during the recruiting fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every Hire America’s Heroes career day to date has attracted more than 1,000 participants. Throughout the recruiting fair, Accenture will conduct Skills to Succeed workshops. These workshops include videotaped practice interview sessions where veterans can go through a corporate-style interview in a supportive setting. Interviews are conducted by recruiting professionals who offer a performance evaluation, and give the job seeker their recorded interview on a thumb drive. These workshops are free for job seekers who register in advance. Skills to Succeed workshops also include tutorials for job seekers on how to best leverage LinkedIn as a job search tool. Corporate recruiters frequently use LinkedIn as a key recruiting resource. Effective use of social media is an essential skill in today’s competitive job market. Many veterans, now employed in corporations, are eager to share their success strategies with today’s military job seekers. Career Coaches are easy to recognize wearing a signature Hire America’s Heroes shirt and standing at tables along the Concourse. Career Coaches are available to any and all job seekers. These are “been there, done that” volunteers ready to help their colleagues make a successful transition. Futures Inc. provides pre-event matching of Military resumes to jobs posted by Career Day Employers. Job seekers are able to complete a brief profile and upload a resume at a specifically designed registration website in advance. Then, upon arrival at Career Day, job seekers receive a list of exhibitors whose jobs match their skill sets. Visit their tables at Career Day to maximize job-search effectiveness! Hire America’s Heroes supporters, veteran job seekers, volunteers and guests are all invited to Ellis Pavilion for complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beverages and networking at the Career Mixer Powered by ProLango. Instead of cookiecutter career advice, ProLango interviews HR and hiring managers and shares their behind-the-scenes information with Career mixer participants. ProLango clients have found employment months faster than the industry average using this “insider” information. Find more information at www. HireAmericasHeroes.org.

Hometown hero
IN OUR OPINION
Every four years the world’s athletes get a chance to shine and a chance to be the singular best in their discipline. When those great athletes rise to the occasion on competition day, predicted or not, it is often on the shoulders of a legion that worked in support during the long years of training and competition before the Olympic Games. Most often leading the support are the parents, then come coaches, influential teachers, siblings and friends (the good ones), mentors, heroes. Of course, all the leveraged effort hinges on their beneficiaries fortitude and personal drive to become the best. Bremerton’s Nathan Adrian is a golden example of that not-often-talked-about truth resting behind hundreds of gold medals won during more than a century of Olympic Games. In his case, siblings must be added to the recipe for success. Home from the games and after a blitz of local appearances at which it appears he gave as much attention as he gave to national appearances, such as “Today” and the “Tonight Show,” Adrian was in a major regional newspaper column thanking his Bremerton, for its “awesome” treatment and reception. When it comes to the rewards of Olympic victory there will be and should be many for Adrian. For his clearly devoted family, Adrian’s success at the games is itself the reward. And, while there is no tangible gain for the larger community that worked to produced such a wonderfully talented young man, there is the morale boost for the City of Bremerton whose residents have a hero, one of them, to look up to; an example of what hard work and community can do.

practice is typically two hours, five days a week. Once school starts most teams cut back to three days a week and one game every Saturday. Any quality youth sports organization emphasizes academics over athletics and if the grades slip, kids don’t play or participate, period. Coaches and parents make that decision together. I must admit that until I became involved in Pee Wee sports, football meant nothing to me. I did not understand the rules or the game. Growing up it was the most boring three to four hours every weekend when my dad commandeered the single TV in the house to watch the game on one of the four channels available at the time. I quickly found something else to do. I finally got it after having the game explained to me at the same basic level that it was explained to first graders preparing to play. Now I love it. Catch a Saturday Pee Wee football game this season if you can. It’s basic football on a local field with no commercial breaks or halftime shows. Just the kids of our community, having fun and playing hard.

Decisions, decisions
Our guest today is John J. Smith of Carson City, Nevada, who is certified by the Gallup Organization as an “undecided voter.”
Guest Column
Q: Mr. Smith, what does the “J” stand for? A: Joan. My parents weren’t sure if they wanted a boy or girl. Q: Even after you were born? A: To this day, actually.
Q: OK. It’s said that you and the other undecideds will ultimately select the next president. What are you doing to prepare? A: I try to avoid mainstream media because it’s all biased, and I don’t pay attention to the know-it-alls on social networks. I read People magazine each week, and I’m a frequent caller to talk radio programs.
PETER FUNT
Q: So, what have you learned about Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney? A: I think they’re both decent, sincere, family men. Q: What about the important issues on which the candidates disagree? A: That’s the problem. I don’t feel either man has explained what he’d do if elected. I’m waiting to hear their plans. Q: Really? They’ve both outlined their plans in speeches and on their websites; there’s very little mystery. A: They both talk about more jobs, fair taxes, strong defense. It all sounds the same to me. Q: What about their qualifications? A: One has a business background, the other has governing experience. It’s a toss-up. Q: What about 2008? Did you prefer Obama or McCain? A: I felt they were both decent, sincere, family men. However, neither ever said much about his plans. Q: So, who did you vote for? A: Oh, I didn’t vote. That would have jeopardized my status as an undecided voter. Listen, I’ve appeared twice with Frank Luntz on Fox News Channel, and he’s meticulous about being sure that his panel of undecideds doesn’t know anything about the race. Q: Then what do you hope to achieve this year? A: My goal is to make it to the Town Hall Debate on Oct. 16, when CNN’s Candy Crowley will take questions from undecided voters selected by Gallup. For us, that’s the World Series and Super Bowl wrapped in one. Q: Any idea what you might ask? A: I’m kind of, what’s the word... Q: Undecided? A: Right. I know it’s important to pick a president you’d like to have a beer with, so I suppose I could ask if they prefer light beer or regular; draft or bottled; imported or domestic — you know, personal stuff. Q: I believe Mr. Romney’s religion doesn’t allow him to drink. A: Geez, how are voters supposed make up their minds? Q: Will you be voting this year? A: That’s a tough one, because both candidates are decent and sincere, but I don’t want the Gallup people to think I’ve waffled about being undecided. Q: And your prediction? A: If I’m lucky I’ll get my picture taken with Candy Crowley. Peter Funt is a writer and speaker and can be reached at www.CandidCamera.com.

The tale of two political tales Last Friday I went to the Broadway revival of the 1960 Tony Award-nominated play “The Best Man,” written by the late Gore Vidal. John Larroquette plays Secretary William Russell, the womanizing candidate in a sham marriage who’s the more scrupulous of the two politicians vying for the presidential nomination in this imagined 1960 convention in Philadelphia. The other, Senator Joseph Cantwell, played by the other 1980s sitcom star, John Stamos, is a young conservative, ruthless and willing to do whatever it takes to win. In what now seems quaint, the play takes place over a harried two days of delegate voting. That’s right. Not two years of campaigning. Not 20 debates. Two days. Like I said, quaint. Peppered with Gore Vidal witty one-liners like, “That man has all the qualities of a dog except loyalty,” and “In those days we poured god over everything like ketchup,” the play is a thoughtful commentary on politics of the era. The hinge of the saga is these two candidates have an arms race (how very 1960s) with their respective mudslinging. In the third act Larroquette’s Secretary Russell asks for a moratorium when he gets the power to take out his opponent. They’re on a crash course of mutual destruction that could blow up even their party. In the end the ambitiousat-any-cost and the ambitiousyet-moral cancel each other out, and without a nod from the sitting president—who dies with contempt for both men for different reasons—
Guest Column
Tina Dupuy a dull third candidate wins the necessary delegates. He’s described as neither the angel of light nor the angel of darkness. He’s dubbed the Angel of Grayness. The ending scene’s summation is that the “best man” indeed won. The take away? The delegate voting process whitewashed, bowdlerized and watered down men of potential greatness.
Cut to: The next night I went to see “The Campaign” starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. Ferrell plays Congressman Cam Brady, a sleazy (again) womanizing incumbent who’s happily running unopposed for his 4th term. After he becomes vulnerable, the billionaire Motch brothers (played by John Lithgow and Dan Aykroyd) find a puppet candidate—the local yokel tour guide, Marty Huggins (played by Galifianakis)—to run against Brady, thus starts the title-promised “Campaign.” The Motch brothers (a thinly veiled spoof on the right-wing bankrolling Koch brothers) are in the process of selling the district to China, and need to get rid of some regulations so

they can build proper sweatshops in North Carolina. As amoral billionaires they invest in Republican politicians who gladly spew platitudes about freedom and god while genuflecting solely to the pursuit of profit. Its “art” imitating life ... assuming your life has a Will Ferrell movie-amount of poop and fart jokes in it. Because this is a Hollywood movie, the puppet candidate ends up “doing the right thing” and dishes about money in politics, which in this medium is so admirable it wins him a seat in Congress. After the credits roll there’s a brief scene of a Congressional hearing called by the now-Congressman Huggins, to investigate the Motch brothers’ financing candidates. The remark is made that because of Citizens United, they haven’t done anything illegal. But then to add to the sense of “feel good” and “everything worked-ness” the brothers are then tied to harboring a known fugitive (Huggins former campaign manager). Quick tacked-on justice. Roll the rest of the credits.
The take away? I’ll quote former candidate for the GOP nomination, former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer (who did dish about money in politics as a Republican and it got him disinvited to every single debate in the primary): “Washington isn’t broken, it’s bought.” But in these two tales are a foreshadowing of the current GOP ticket: Mitt Romney, the Angel of Grayness; the candidate who in the primary stayed neutral and Etch-a-sketchy while the others self-combusted on each other’s volatility. He’s Gore Vidal’s “best man.” And then there’s the Veep nod, Paul Ryan, a Koch brother candidate whose signature budget plans were drafted and scored by the Koch-funded Heritage Foundation and whose policies would greatly benefit billionaires. Mitt Romney, a 1960’s lament. Paul Ryan, 2012’s crux.

at Naval Base Kitsap a week before the deployment. He had called upon the men and women of the Stennis as they are needed by their country. “The fact is we still confront some heavy threats in the world” Panetta said. “And you’re the ones who are going to face those threats.” Panetta said he understood that families would suffer separations, but said he needed the men and women of the Stennis. “I understand that it’s tough. We are asking an awful lot of each of you,” Panetta said. “But, frankly, you are the best I have, and when the
world calls we have to respond.” For many of the men and women serving on the Stennis, the deployment was a simple matter of doing their job. For Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Kelsey Strawn, the departure was still too soon. “It’s hard cause we just got back from deployment and we haven’t had much time to spend with our families,” she said. Ryan Hood, Strawn’s boyfriend, said he wished he had more time to spend with her. “It is kind of hard because she just got back and now she has to go,” Hood said. Sailors fold the national ensign on the flight deck of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis as the ship gets underway Monday. The Stennis will return to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility four months ahead of schedule in order to maintain combatant commander requirements for the presence in the region. Kitsap said the departure will take many familiar faces away from the area. “It will be significant for our people to take that many folks out of here,” he said. Lt. j.g. Clint Tergeson said the departure was a mixture of sorrow
and excitement. “We are all disappointed to leave our families, but we are excited to serve our country,” he said. “We have all known for awhile that this was a possibility.” Sailor Joshua Hansel said he would miss his four children, but he also said
the departure was a matter of duty. “It’s my job,” he said. Alyissa Hansel, Joshua’s daughter said she will miss her dad at school and sporting events, but is proud of the work he does. “I am proud of him. He does a lot for his country,” she said.
Panetta visits Stennis before carrier sails for the Middle East ‘We’re asking an awful lot of each of you. And frankly you are the best I have’ Navy News Service
Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta on Aug. 22 told sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis that they and their ship, and others like it, are the “heart and soul” of the nation’s defense strategy. “All of you deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the great job the Stennis has done in the past and will do in the future,” he said. Last month, the secretary approved a request by Marine Corps Gen. James N. Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, to deploy the Stennis and its strike group to the Middle East four months early. The Stennis carrier strike group, which returned from its last Middle East deployment in March, previously was set for deployment to the Pacific near the end of the year. Speaking to a gathering of 2,300 sailors assigned to the carrier - about 85 percent of
the ship’s strength - the secretary said he understands the strain a high operating tempo can cause for service members and families. “It’s tough,” he said. “We’re asking an awful lot of each of you. And frankly, you are the best I have -and when the world calls, we have to respond.” The secretary said he also recognizes the strain backto-back deployments put on military families. “Your families are as important to our ability to maintain a strong defense as anybody else,” Panetta said. “Their support and their love are what make sure that we are a strong fighting force.” As he normally does when he visits troops, Panetta outlined the defense strategy announced early this year, describing his four priorities in setting that strategy: maintain the world’s best military; cut defense spending judiciously, not across the board; examine all aspects of military spending to determine those cuts; and keep faith with service

U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Kenneth Abbate members now in uniform by preserving their pay and benefits. The current defense strategy will meet those priorities and shape a smaller, agile, technologically advanced force that can deploy to meet any threat, while maintaining a global presence and the potency to defeat more than one enemy
at a time, he said. He added the Stennis carrier strike group exemplifies just the high-tech, deployable capability the strategy calls for. As Panetta noted, he can call on the world’s most advanced military systems: aircraft carriers, fighters, bombers and weapons systems of every kind. “But none of it, none
of that, is worth a damn without men and women in uniform who serve this country,” he added. “You are the heart and soul of our national defense. That’s why I’m here, to thank you for what you do to help keep America the strongest military power in the world.” After speaking with the sailors, Panetta told report-
ers the Stennis strike group will guard against a range of threats in Centcom’s area of responsibility, which includes the Persian Gulf. “Obviously, Iran is one of those threats,” he said, noting that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are one concern, while its threat to oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz is another. “Secondly, it is the turmoil in Syria,” he said. “We’re obviously following that closely as well. There are a number of issues in that region.” The nation’s focus on Syria is concentrated in three areas; humanitarian assistance and working with Jordan and Turkey to manage refugee issues; monitoring Syrian chemical and biological weapon stockpiles; and offering nonlethal assistance to opposition forces. The secretary said the current two-carrier U.S. presence in the Gulf region is not set to end at any particular time. “Clearly, two carriers [are] important to us in order to have the ability to confront any contingency,” he said.

Bremerton chalking starts free speech controversy By Patrick McDonough pmcdonough@soundpublishing.com
Amy Hordon paused a moment on Sunday afternoon, her head tilted to the side as she studied words written on the sidewalk in blue chalk. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
Crouched on the corner of Burwell Street and Washington Avenue in Downtown Bremerton on Aug. 19, she placed a few final touches on the rendering of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. She wrote them in support of Taylor Niemy, a young man who believes his civil liberties have been violated by the city of Bremerton. Niemy was stopped on July 27 by a Bremerton Police while creating “chalk art.” City officials labeled his work as graffiti. A resident of Seattle, Niemy said he had writ-
ten a set of 23 grievances from the Declaration of the Occupation of New York, a document from the occupy movements that flourished last year, when an officer stopped him. Niemy stopped writing at the officer’s order and the officer took his personal information and told him he would receive a citation in the mail. “I feel that them telling me I can’t do this is a violation of my free speech rights,” Niemy said. “I don’t think this is vandalism in any way.” Later the same afternoon

a Bremerton fire truck arrived downtown and firefighters washed the chalk away. In response to the incident, Niemy said he created a Facebook page proposing a “Chalk Up Bremerton Day.” Dozens of supporters from children to grandparents turned up Sunday in support of Niemy’s cause. They drew and wrote on the sidewalk between First Street and Burwell Street on Washington Avenue in downtown Bremerton. Among the chalk renderings were pastel colored hearts and flowers, peace symbols and hopscotch boards. There were also multiple renderings of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and statements such as “end the war now.” Maria T and her daughter Lucianna, who did not want their last names used for fear of getting a ticket from the city, said they attended because they wanted to support Niemy. “It is just so silly that we are at that point in the world that we are worried about people drawing on the sidewalk with chalk,” Maria T said. Lucianna, 5, said she just enjoys drawing on the sidewalk. “I just like doing the chalk art,” she said. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent said the chalk defaced

City moves forward in discussions for Gold Mountain management As Olympic Course’s debt service grows, a company with no golf experience is poised to land contract under staff recommendation By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com
The City of Bremerton is moving forward with efforts to sign a contract with Columbia Hospitality, a Seattle based hotel and hospitality management company, to run Gold Mountain Golf Course operations. them that under the current proposal, Head Golf Pro Daryl Matheny will work for Columbia under a contract. Likewise, longtime Golf Course Superintendent Ed Faulk is working out details for a way to stay with Gold Mountain under a Columbia management contract. An East Bremerton duplex suffered significant smoke damage last week during an early morning fire, but all of the occupants were able to escape safely. Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews received a call about a structure fire in the 3000 block of Olympus Drive at about 1:26 a.m. Aug. 24. Ileana LiMarzi, a CKFR spokesperson, said it was originally reported as a patio fire, but upon arrival firefighters saw that the northern unit of the duplex was fully ablaze. The fire moved from the patio into the first and second floors and the attic. A second alarm was called for additional units at approximately 1:35 am. LiMarzi said that a 12-yearSee duplex fire, A12

Man with Bremerton ties posed for famous ‘Lone Sailor’ sculpture By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com
Folks strolling along the southern end of the Bremerton Marina breakwater on Saturday morning could be forgiven for seeing double. That’s because “The Lone Sailor” sculpture that sits there was joined by the man that artist Stanley Bleifeld used as his model for the world famous work paying tribute to all the personnel of the sea services. The original is a centerpiece of the United States Navy Memorial along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Dan Maloney returned to Bremerton last week for a friend’s wedding and took some time to visit his likeness. Twenty-eight years ago, Maloney was a Petty Officer 1st class serving at the New London Submarine Base and Bleifeld had a home and studio in Westin, Conn. During their first session together, which only lasted about 15 minutes, Maloney

Former Bremerton resident Dan Maloney is the young sailor that artist Stanley Bleifeld used as a model for his world famous 1987 sculpture “The Lone Sailor.” The statue pays tribute to all who have served at sea. put his foot on a cleat at the base and draped his arm casually over his knee and Bleifeld eventually made a maquette, or scale model, called “Liberty Hound.” “Quite frankly, that’s my favorite version because any sailor will tell you that liberty is the best part about being in the navy,” Maloney said. That version, though, was deemed to be too casual for a national memorial and the only existing version of it today sits in Jacksonville, Fla., whereas “The Lone Sailor” can be found at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country including, of course, Bremerton. Maloney went to Bleifeld’s home for another brief session. “It was a day just like today, kinda crisp and sunny,” Maloney said. “I had my hands in my pockets again and at some point in time we got it just right and Stan kind of just said, ‘Good, good, good. Don’t move, don’t move.’ “ A photographer circled Maloney snapping frame after frame from which Bleifeld later made the sculpture. Several other sailors modeled for Bleifeld, but the version with Maloney’s likeness was the one that was eventually chosen. “They approved it and everybody loved it,” Maloney said. “It wasn’t without controversy,

though, because for some of the old chiefs, and especially guys I worked with, the lone sailor is technically out of uniform. You’re not supposed to have your hands in your pockets and you’re not supposed to flip your peacoat collar up. But, anybody that’s ever worn one of these things has done just exactly what the lone sailor’s doing, right?” When the sculpture was unveiled Oct. 12, 1987, thousands of veterans and VIPs were on hand. “My VIP, my mom, was there because I was at sea at the time,” Maloney said. “She told me that when they unveiled this there wasn’t a dry eye among any of those veterans. They all saw themselves and that’s the beauty of ‘The Lone Sailor’ statue. Because anybody that’s ever served sees themselves and I guess that’s a tribute to my absolute averageness.” Maloney likes to downplay
what he describes as a very small role in the sculpture and instead likes to highlight the Navy Memorial itself. He says that to play up any sort of personal connection is inappropriate and he would rather talk about the connections that everyone can understand. “We’ve got a lasting legacy now forever for anybody that’s ever been to sea in defense of the country and that makes me very, very happy,” he said. For Maloney, “The Lone Sailor” has an emotional impact and resonance for those who have served and others that was described eloquently by Pulitzer Prize winning author Herman Wouk. The writer described the gaze of the sailor as not just looking toward home and the horizon, but past those places toward a day when war is not necessary and peace abounds. “That’s what we all want,”

the time of the blaze, but had five family members house-sitting. The two adults smelled smoke and as they were gathering their three children to evacuate they witnessed a large fire on the back patio. The southern unit has some smoke damage and Red Cross has been called to assist the occupants of both units. The fire was out at 2 a.m. and the county fire marshal was called to investigate the balze. Units from Bremerton Fire Department and Navy Region

Maloney said. “There isn’t a professional soldier or warrior that wants to go to war. We believe, especially here in America, in peace through strength. We’ll answer the call if need be and we’ll fight with valor and we’ll vanquish our foes, but we want peace. Peace on earth.” Maloney moved to Bremerton in the mid 1980s and his youngest son was born here. After helping to build the USS Alabama on the East Coast, Maloney travelled with the boat through the Panama Canal to Sub Base Bangor. He continued to serve on the Alabama, doing strategic deterrent patrols out of Bangor, and eventually went to the Trident Training Facility where he taught for three years. He became a mustang and was sent to Pearl Harbor in 1992. Maloney retired as a Lieutenant Commander and now works as a civilian manager working on submarine modernization. As he stood near the statute depicting him as a young sailor, Maloney gazed over at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and spoke fondly of the people that work there, noting, in particular, the fine work they did in replacing the front end of the USS San Francisco with the front end of the USS Honolulu. “The people working here, I get chicken skin just thinking about it,” he said. “The dedicated people at the shipyards, and I get to work with the same kind of people at Pearl Harbor, it blows me away. There’s a lot of bad talk about America in the back and forth and the economy’s bad. Obama and Romney are fighting it out and it’s turning into a pretty ugly debate. But, I don’t have doubts about the strength of this country. You know, this is just a hiccup. We’re fine. We’re fine.” Northwest also responded. LiMarzi said that the duplex had working smoke alarms. “We urge everyone to make sure they have properly working smoke alarms,” she added. “Check alarms monthly and change the batteries twice a year.” Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue offers free smoke alarms and installation. Those that are interested can call 360-447-3603 for more information.

Adrian CONTINUED FROM A1
Adrian again smiled, said thank you and gave Marcus a high five. Oh, yeah, Marcus got an autograph to take home, too. The Stewart kids, Marcus and hundreds of others of all ages came out Monday for the official unveiling of Nathan Adrian Drive, right across the street from the Bremerton Family YMCA and the Jarstad Pool where Adrian’s swimming career kicked-off. The City of Bremerton also declared Aug. 27 Nathan Adrian Day. Following the Bremerton High School Band performance of his high school fight song, Adrian got a chance to hold his own copy of the new street sign bearing his name. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent told him it was now his street. “Because of your drive to win at the Olympics, this is your street,” Lent said as she handed him the sign bearing his name. Adrian hoisted it over his head. “This is really cool,” he said. Adrian spoke briefly, telling the crowd that he’d rather spend time meeting them, take pictures and sign stuff. “Thank you to you all for your support, you really make me

Adrian graduated from the University of California, Berkley with honors, was a PAC 10 scholarathlete of the year and racked up
several other academic accolades, Herndon “But before he was a Cal Bear, he was a Bremerton Knight,” Herndon said, before sharing a story about Adrian making up some missed gym classes due to traveling for competitions. Adrian’s mom, Cecilia, called the gym teacher and asked about ways that Nathan could make up the missed classes. The teacher insisted that her son’s grade would still be an A, dropping
from a 100 percent to 96 percent, and that making up the missed classes wouldn’t be necessary. Mrs. Adrian, though, wouldn’t take no for an answer because her son was “no different than other students” and Nathan showed up at 6 a.m. for two weeks straight
to do weight training. Herndon relayed that Nathan showed up smiling, left with sweat on his brow and big offered a big thank you to his teacher for helping make him a better student athlete.

docudrama premieres at the admiral BREMERTON — “Jursidiction,” a docudrama filmed entirely in Bremerton, premieres Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m., at
the Admiral Theatre, 515 Pacific Ave., Bremerton. The cast and crew will be at the premiere, according to executive producer Navdeep Maju, who also had a role in the film as character James Delgrado. The film also stars Kyler Bowker as Richard, Gregory Fyhr as Sunny Johnson, Charles Hamilton as Chief Pugg, Robert McAllister as Tommy
Tongue, and Alisha Otis as Venessa Johnson. The 50-minute film won an Award of Merit at The Indie Fest. According to www. jurisdictionthemovie.com (you can buy premiere tickets and view the trailer there), the story takes place in a small town where drug dealing has gotten out of hand. The police department must stop it before it gets out
of their jurisdiction, hence the title. The film’s tagline is “A broken system. A shattered life.” While it’s described on Internet Movie Database as Documentary | Short | Action, it’s described on its Facebook page as a dark comedy. Magic Carpet Ride’s performance will feature a special guest: Molly Walmsley, an aspiring vocalist and student at Kingston High School, will join the band for “Simple Man.” She responded to an invitation to local schools from festival organizers. (Her videos are uploaded at
www.youtube.com/user/ missmolly2233). Bui, a San Francisco native, studied under Joe Satriani and co-founded Pegasus, which was signed to Epic Records. He toured and performed with Steppenwolf before it broke up in 1976, and played in several variations of bands playing Steppenwolf’s greatest hits, including Goldy McJohn & Friendz, led by Steppenwolf founding keyboardist McJohn. (Original Steppenwolf member John Kay and his group performs as John Kay & Steppenwolf.) Bui has also performed
with and backed many famous artists, among them Eddie Money, Tower of Power, and Kathy Mattea. Setzer has shared the stage with Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (of Nelson), Leroy Powell of the Shooter Jennings Band, Arlan Schierbaum of Jemimah Puddleduck, and Brian “Dogboy” Burwell of Neve. He’s also opened for Los Lonely Boys, P.O.D., Lotus, and The Atomic Punks, among others. Ironstone has recorded
as a studio musician since 1972. He signed as a songwriter/producer to Island Music in 1979 and has been a published ASCAP songwriter since then, as well as a record producer, vocal coach, and touring keyboard player. He’s played with John Kay & Steppenwolf, Anita Baker, and The Pointer Sisters, and he can be heard on songs recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Sheena Easton, Brenda Russell, Sylvia St. James, Jess Roden, The Carpenters, Chaka Kahn, Randy Crawford, The McCrarys, Rita Coolidge, Priscilla Coolidge, and Booker T and the MGs. Kasper performed with many local blues and jazz bands, and is the house pianist at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. Magic Carpet Ride can still rock, but there’s a softer side to this group — it’s all about the music and having a good time performing, Bui said. In 2009, Magic Carpet Ride played a special
concert for the Thurston County Boys and Girls Club at the Great Wolf Lodge; the event raised more than $400,000. Magic Carpet Ride drew an audience of 500 to a 2010 concert in Saratoga, N.Y. to benefit an organization that serves individuals with disabilities and their families. More than $70,000 was raised. Magic Carpet Ride helped sell out Full Moon Fest 2011, a benefit for The American Cancer Society, in Quilcene.

Organic Tomato and Avocado Summer Salad GLUTEN free foodies By lisa garza
I
t’s still summer, and tomato time is still here! Organic Tomato and Avocado Summer Salad is one of my favorite salads to make and take to a potluck picnic. I buy my tomatoes from a local farmer on Bainbridge Island. They are at their peak of freshness right now. I love the small organic varieties of tomatoes to get the tart, sweet and super-sweet flavors for this salad. This recipe is about a few simple ingredients with major flavor. Organic Tomato and Avocado Summer Salad serves approximately 6-8 people. Ingredients 4 cups Organic Tomato variety — grape, cherry, golden, etc. 1/4 cup Organic Extra
You absorb more of the tomato’s nutrients — Vitamin C, lycopene and antioxidants — when eating tomatoes with olive oil and good fats such as avocado. Lisa Garza / Gluten Free Foodies Virgin Spanish Olive Oil — buttery. 2-3 ripe Avocados — sliced. 2-3 generous pinches Flor de Sal — Sea Salt. Fresh ground black pepper to taste. Chopped fresh chives — optional.
Instructions Wash and cut the tomatoes in half. Place the tomatoes in a bowl. Sprinkle 1 generous pinch of sea salt on top. Toss gently. Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Slice the avocados and place on a platter. Sprinkle the tomatoes on top. Drizzle some olive oil on top ... add 2 generous pinches of sea salt, fresh ground black pepper and fresh-cut chives if you desire.

Quick tips and thoughts: Chill the avocado to make clean slices and a tad bit easier peeling of the rind. Wait to cut the avocado until just before serving to keep the avocado fresh and green. Chilling the variety tomatoes with the olive oil allows time for the flavors to meld and for the olive oil to do its magic. Did you know that you absorb more of the tomato’s nutrients — Vitamin C, lycopene and antioxidants — when eating tomatoes with olive oil and good fats such as avocado? It’s true! Viognier: Hard to pronounce, easy to drink V
iognier would seem to be destined to have a difficult
time. It’s hard to pronounce, is made in small quantities, is best known in a fairly obscure region, is difficult to grow and is not easy to pair with food. That sounds like a joke without a punchline. Yet there is much to love about Viognier, and it’s becoming easier to find it in the Northwest. First the pronunciation: vee-own-YAY. Practice it a few times, and it will become second nature. Viognier is a white wine grape best known in the Condrieu region of France’s Rhône Valley. As recently as the mid-1960s,

the grape was nearly lost to history, as fewer than 10 acres were left. But its fortunes have changed dramatically since then, as Condrieu now has more than 700 acres, and it is planted around the globe, including the West Coast, Australia, Argentina and Chile. In the Rhône Valley appellation of Côte-Rôtie, a bit of Viognier is traditionally co-fermented with Syrah, a style that has been picked up in the New World. Growing Viognier is a challenge because it is

Upland Vineyard on Snipes Mountain, high above the Yakima Valley, grows some of the best Viognier in Washington. Andy Perdue / Northwest Wines susceptible to disease, it grows uneven clusters, and unless it’s picked at perfect ripeness, the wine will taste either boring or flabby. But when a winemaker gets it right, Viognier is so delicious. In the Northwest, Viognier will exude aromas and flavors of tropical fruits and Creamsicles. Like its sibling Syrah, Viognier tends to be a lowacid wine, which makes it harder to pair with food. We like it with mild Thai curries, chowders, shellfish and pasta primavera. In Washington, we are
seeing more and more Viogniers. Last year, winemakers crushed 1,100 tons of Viognier, making it bigger than Chenin Blanc and Semillon. We also find Viognier in Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia. Here are a few Viogniers we’ve tasted recently. Ask for them at your favorite local wine merchant or order directly from the wineries. n Abacela 2011 Estate Viognier, Umpqua Valley, $22: Subdued aromas of Golden Delicious apple, orange and fresh pineapple are followed by candy corn
and butterscotch. The entry to the palate is filled with yellow grapefruit and popcorn, backed by lovely minerality and Rangpur lime bitterness to cleanse the palate. Enjoy this with scallops served alongside an orange sauce. n Chateau Ste. Michelle 2010 Limited Release Viognier, Columbia Valley, $15: This opens with aromas of pear, linen, apple blossom and a combination of steeliness and jasmine reminiscent of some Rieslings. On the palate, it’s fruit-forward and refreshing with grapefruit and fresh-squeezed lemon juice. n Cinder Wines 2011 Dry Viognier, Snake River Valley, $18: This brings an inviting and tropical nose with lychee and orange Creamsicle aromas, and there’s even more to bear on the palate. Passion fruit, pineapple flavors are joined by more acidity than one would expect, backed by notes of elderflowers, peaches and dried apricot. n Farm Boy Wines 2010 Upland Vineyard Viognier, Snipes
Mountain, $14: This is one of the best Viogniers we’ve tasted this year. It opens with that Creamsicle aroma we adore, along with notes of mangoes, cream soda, lime and pineapples. On the palate, it shows off flavors of cling peaches, honeydew melon, lime, honey and mangoes. It’s a great wine to open on the deck with blue cheese melted over fresh figs. n Jones of Washington 2011 Estate Vineyards Viognier, Wahluke Slope, $15: This opens with aromas of white peaches, lemons, limes and yellow roses, followed by big, rich flavors of Mandarin oranges, jasmine flowers, mint, sweet apples and sherbet. n Palouse Winery 2010 Golden Pearl Viognier, Washington, $22: Barrel fermentation in neutral French oak helps explain the aromas of coconut milk, dusty President Lincoln rose and moist apricots. On the palate, it drinks as if it were done in a fruit-forward style and fermented in stainless steel because of the orchard fruit flavors and lemony acidity. — Andy Perdue and Eric Degerman are the editors of Wine Press Northwest. choice and opportunity. I am finding however, you do need to be on guard and careful to make the right choices. I went to McDonald’s to get a coffee. Don’t question my choice of place to get a coffee, that is not the point here. Coffee is being advertised for $1 any size. I wanted milk in it, not creamer, so after a discussion with the cashier on how I could achieve this we worked out I had to buy the milk separately. So my $1 coffee ended up being a tad over $3. You have to really fight to be healthy here. We are getting the basics right: brown bread instead of white, low-fat cheese instead of full fat, low-fat or non-fat dairy in general, baked crisps/chips instead of the regular kind, canned fruit in juice instead of syrup. The packet of bread proudly states “contains no fructose corn syrup.” Why would it have that in it anyway? So many food items here have sugar where you wouldn’t even expect it. The baked beans are so sweet as to nearly be inedible. There is sugar in the bread unless you are careful. The Raisin Bran crunch sounds healthy but is so sweet, packed full of sugar and tastes horrible. My son’s school back in England did not allow any peanut butter, chips, cookies or chocolate in their lunchboxes. His school here sells ice cream to the kids every Friday and

ylan’s first day of school is approaching. I’m nervous as heck for him although he seems fine. This is almost as bad as his first day of nursery where he toddled off with nary a glance back and I left to get the train to work crying. To have children is “to forever walk around with your heart outside your body,” to quote from someone I’ve read somewhere. After 16 years of independent living, I am back with my parents. Not back where I grew up, as that would be in a different state, but at their house we are once again together, only I’ve multiplied and brought more people with me. While the transition is going as well as can be expected, we’re making holes. All in the name of child proofing. As the joke goes, “We’ve child-proofed the house, but the kids are still here!” Back in our previous home, with space issues and three little ones, we tried to make the placement of things as ergonomic as possible, to facilitate some semblance of tidiness and organization. For example, our trashbags were in a drawer near our kitchen trash can. I’m emptying my parents’ trash can and I’m looking for the bags. Are they under the sink? No. Are they in any of the drawers near the sink? No. Are they in the pantry? No. I have to ask Dad who tells me they are in the garage. In the garage. OK. The next day I am emptying the trash can and I go into the garage to get a bag. They are not there. “Dad where are the

Heel Spurs. Any medical term with the word “spur” in it sounds uncomfortable, especially if that spur is on the bottom of your foot. A heel spur is a bony growth on the bottom of the heel bone. It can produce pain when standing, walking or putting any other kind of pressure on the heel. It is caused by calcium deposits made because tissue on the bottom of the feet pulls away from the heel. The condition is more common in people with flat feet and high arches, and women are more likely to suffer from it than men because of the types of shoes women tend to wear. Your podiatrist can recommend treatment options, including but not limited to orthotics and/or surgery to alleviate discomfort from heel spurs. New patients welcome and seen on the same day. Early & late appointments available. Most insurances accepted.

People helping pets...pets helping people. Eric is an 8 yr old shorthaired white male with grey tabby
patches on his head, body and tail. He was one of 12 cats living with an elderly woman. Eric is a shy guy who has just recently started asking for attention. He still likes to stay in a high perch where he can keep an eye on everyone and everything but he will stand up and start to circle around and headbutt our hands when we reach to him. He has been an indoor only cat. Eric does like venturing out onto our enclosed porches and watching the birds and squirrels at the feeders. He will be at the Poulsbo Petco this week hoping to meet his new family.

aroundkitsap Bainbridge island Review Islanders for Collaborative Policing asks for changes in Bainbridge Island Police Department: The citizens group started last year to build trust between Bainbridge islanders and their police force has released its report containing suggestions on how to
reform the department. Islanders for Collaborative Policing issued its eight-page report Aug. 28. The report said the department could be improved by taking a more collaborative approach with the community, providing enhanced crisis intervention training, putting officers on bike and foot patrols, and reestablishing a school resource officer position.
In an Aug. 23 memo from Interim Public Safety Director Larry Dickerson and Police Commander Susan Shultz, the pair said the suggestions raised by the group were ideas that had already been implemented or were already being pursued by the department. Islanders for Collaborative Policing has maintained from its inception that the police
department has a shaky reputation with the public. That notion was underscored in the report. The report recounted the online survey results presented by the group in March, as the city prepared to defend itself against a federal lawsuit resulting from an officerinvolved shooting that left a mentally ill Bainbridge Island man dead. — BainbridgeReview.com
Bremerton Patriot Refinancing government center could save $1 million: The Bremerton City Council is likely to move ahead with a plan to issue general obligation bonds to save money on its portion of the Norm Dicks Government Center. In 2003, the city partnered with the county and Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority, now known as Housing Kitsap, to purchase and develop the government center. The Housing Kitsap bonds can’t be paid off until July, so the city’s new bonds will be issued sometime this year but held in escrow until the old ones can be redeemed. By refinancing, officials

Central Kitsap Reporter County approves extra vacation to retain employee: It doesn’t happen very often, but one way Kitsap County can keep other governments from luring away their best staff members is to offer a bump up in vacation time. The Board of County Commissioners Aug. 13 gave Kitsap County Resources Conservation manager Autumn Salamack an extra week of vacation each year for four years and a one-time bonus of 16 extra vacation hours in an effort to keep her from taking a job elsewhere. Salamack has been with the county for a year and is considered “key” to the county’s conservation efforts. According to Baker, she has helped put Kitsap County on the national map for energy conservation. In recent months, as the county leadership started to face the 2013 budget cycle, District 1 Commissioner Rob Gelder has floated the idea of reducing the staff and using the money to boost pay as a way to keep effective and talented people from job hopping. — CentralKitsapReporter. com

Suquamish sues Navy over wharf project: The Suquamish Tribe has filed a lawsuit in federal court against the Navy, the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Marine Fisheries Service, to fight the proposed explosives-handling wharf at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor. In a statement by Chairman Leonard Forsman, the Tribal Council had met with Navy and Army Corps representatives from 2009-11, but the Navy is continuing the project without an agreement with the Suquamish Tribe. The wharf, which would be a second explosives-handling wharf, would cover 6.3 acres, extend 600 feet from the shoreline and use 1,250 steel pilings. The Army Corps authorized the final permit Aug. 21.
The Navy reached a $9 million mitigation agreement with Port Gamble S’Klallam and Skokomish tribes in May. The mitigation plan calls for improvements to Tribal hatcheries, beach enhancement, a research facility, and up to $3.5 million to help acquire shoreline along Port Gamble Bay, south of the former Pope Resources mill site. — NorthKitsapHerald.com
Port Orchard Independent South Kitsap camp gives separated siblings time together: It is more than a symbol. For Camp to Belong founder Lynn Price, the “Right to Reunite” banner hanging from the lunchroom at South Kitsap’s Miracle Ranch is more like a mission statement. Price, who lives in Denver, visited last week’s fourth annual Camp to Belong Washington at Crista Camp on Horseshoe Lake. Camp to Belong, which was founded in 1995, is designed to reunite siblings separated by foster care placements. Price grew up in the foster care system. She was separated from her sister when she was 8 months old and her sister was 2 years old. Because there were no specific policies about siblings seeing each other at the time, Price said she only saw her occasionally when their mother sought visitation. That finally changed when her sister, who was a freshman in college, asked her to visit. According to co-director April VanGesen, there are approximately 11,000 children in the state’s foster care system. Nationally, she said 75 percent of children placed in foster care are separated from their siblings. Even though the staff is unpaid, VanGesen said the camp still costs $85,000 as participants, who do not pay for expenses, travel from places such as Texas. Kennedy and VanGesen soon will start preparations, which include fundraising, for next year’s camp. VanGesen said that of more than 200 applicants, 104 children were selected and 99 arrived. — PortOrchardIndependent.com Kitsap Week has a circulation of 65,000 every Friday. Kitsap home builders lead in environmental design BY JOHNNY WALKER FOR SOUNDPUBLISHING INC.
Representing a large body of construction trades from more than 300 local companies, the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County is a clearing house for industry education, expertise and professional resources leading the way for Kitsap County in affordable housing, environmental design and economic development. Headquartered at their demonstration facility on Bremerton’s Auto Center Way, the Homebuilders Association puts its vision to practice by showcasing low impact development and energy efficiency techniques. A short visit to the facility reveals samples of pervious pavement, vegetated roofing, and other advanced environmental construction techniques. “We’re not your average Homebuilders Association,” said Executive Vice President Teresa
Osinski, CGP. “We embrace market based solutions to meet consumer‚ needs and protect our environment. While there are a lot of great reasons to contact the Home Builders Association of Kitsap County, near the top of the list is that we are the place that connects people to the experts that can help them solve their construction, remodel, financing, or home repair needs.” With a deep understanding of advanced construction techniques, gained from a combination of its builders in the field and what the housing market shows that it will bear, the Homebuilders Association of Kitsap County is well positioned to advise home buyers and local governments on current solutions for current and evolving issues. “We’re not just the voice of the professional community,” Osinski said, “but we also speak on behalf of a sometimes unknowing consumer who does not yet know they

PFAFF machine is on the showroom floor to compare for the right need and budget. You don’t have to be a PFAFF owner to appreciate Sound Sewing & Vacuum. Trained staff are well versed in all major product brands, and two in-store repair technicians provide service for a full range of sewing machines. Long term support and training is unsurpassed at Sound Sewing & Vacuum. Customers who purchase a sewing machine from Mosher’s team receive one full year of free service plus unlimited in-store training through a variety of seminars and workshops. “Purchasing a sewing machine is a big decision,” said Mosher. “We want our customers to know every aspect of their machine so they can have the very best experience. We want them to be able to concentrate on the project at hand, not worry about how the machine works.” Customers who have purchased elsewhere may have to pay a small fee, or simply participate in one of the many
free clubs Sound Sewing has to offer. The overall experience is designed to encourage the entire sewing community no matter what skill level or machine. “We teach and service all makes and models,” Mosher said. “The passion of our business comes through the excitement of watching our customers grow no matter what machine or level of experience they have. Starbucks has been in contact with Bainbridge Island officials about plans the worldwide coffee retailer has to establish a location at the Village Shopping Center on High School Road. Representatives for Starbucks met with officials from the city’s planning department in March. The city told them that any plans for a Starbucks at the shopping center location would have to be submitted to the city in advance for approval in light of the city’s zoning codes. In July, planning director Kathy Cook told Starbucks officials that in order for a Starbucks outlet to be locaed at the company’s preferred location, the company would have to show how its store would not be considered a formula take out food restaurant. The city defines such an establishment as a business that serves food or beverages primarily in disposable containers and operate from standardized menus and sport similar interior/ exterior designs.

Business Briefs from private donations to fund a new Silverdale Branch Library. KRL had proposed building a new, 17,500 square foot Silverdale Library when it offered a levy for voter consideration in 2010. The levy was defeated and KRL explored other ways to create a new Silverdale Library. It was determined that raising the funds privately would be the most viable option. The study is expected to be completed and submitted to the KRL Board of Trustees at its scheduled Sept. 27 meeting. The report will determine the community’s capacity and willingness to donate funds for a new Silverdale Library, as well as if the community would prefer KRL to build a new facility or renovate existing commercial space in Silverdale.

Mora Iced Creamery on Bainbridge Island was named as the best ice cream in the U.S. by Food & Wine Magazine. The company, which also has stores in Kingston and Poulsbo, was praised for its artisanal flavors, like lavender and rose petal, as well as for more unique specialty f lavors like sabayon and pear sorbet. “We hand squeeze every lemon, orange, lime,” owner Jerry Perez said. “We make everything from scratch. We don’t use any premixed powder [or] magic ingredient.” The eight-year-old artisan ice cream company has won several awards in the last few years, including a Reader’s Choice Award by West Sound Home & Garden readers in the March “Best of Food & Wine” issue. Last year, Seattle Weekly named it the best ice cream parlor in the area.
