New mixed-use development proposed for Town Center Building must include affordable housing to go to fifth story By Mary L. Grady

The property on the northwest corner of S.E. 27th Street and 76the Avenue S.E., occupied for many years by the Islander Pub, True Value Hardware, the former Washington state Liquor Store, Mercer Island Pediatrics and other businesses, could soon become the address for another residential housing development. The Hudesman property, home of the strip mall and large parking lot, was sold late last year. Half or more of the space in the mall is empty. According to the King County Assessor’s office, the 32,000-square-foot parcel sold on Nov. 8, 2011, for $8 million, about 10 percent over its assessed value, to an entity called MI 2615 LLC. The address listed for MI 2615 LLC is also the address of Keeler Investments Group, LLC offices, at 2448 76th Ave. S.E. on Mercer

The Mercer Island High School football team will begin the 2012 season with its first home game on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. against Redmond. The Mercer Island marching band will perform at halftime.

Established in 1981, the Mercer Island Schools Foundation has raised millions of dollars for Island schools. It helps schools purchase new equipment and books, and funds enrichment activities for students. Yet now funds donated by Islander parents and corporate sponsors also goes toward making up for what has been lost due to state spending cuts. Over the past couple of years, its mission has expanded to blunt the effect of cuts in state funding for public schools. “Today, because of budget cuts, schools foundations exist across our state to provide critical resources for curriculum, textbooks, materials and staff development. The funding goes beyond what the state provides,” said Penny Yantis, executive director.

Longtime Island resident Allison Keeler is a principal at the firm. The project architect, Jim Bodoia, brought drawings of a seven-story mixed-use building similar to the recent projects on 76th Avenue S.E., which include Aljoya and the Aviara project that is under construction. If a fifth story (above ground) is approved, the building would include 215 living units (79 of which would be studios) with 299 parking spaces and commercial

space. Two of the stories would be parking below ground, with the ground floor level primarily filled with retail and commercial uses. Apartments would fill the remaining levels above. The architect, the property owner, Keeler and an attorney appeared before the Mercer Island Design Commission last week to introduce the project, emphasizing that the building’s configuration and design was preliminary

Mercer Island Fire Chief Chris Tubbs’ son, Cpl. Zach Tubbs, returned from Afghanistan this summer. and volunteered to go to Afghanistan, where he served from March through July. “I wanted an opportunity to serve my part in fighting the war on terror,” Tubbs wrote to the Reporter. As an “Amtracker,” he drove and worked on amphibious assault vehicles (AAVs). He provided security for convoys and the leaders of his unit, and operated MRAPs — Mine Resistant Ambush Protected antipersonnel vehicles. On leave after five months in Afghanistan, Tubbs came home to Sammamish — and Mercer Island. “The best part of coming home was getting to see all my family and friends,” Tubbs said. “Their prayers and words of encouragement were a great source of support during my deployment.” He visited the Mercer Island fire station last week to reconnect with some of the firemen and present the flag. laces “His extended family

is the Mercer Island Fire Department,” Chris Tubbs said. “A lot of the guys — they’ve watched Zach grow up, and they’ve been sort of surrogate parents … the fire community is a very close community in that way.” Zach has ridden the Island fire trucks, and celebrated many birthdays in the fire station. “When he was 7 or 8, he told my wife and I, he didn’t want another birthday party in the fire station,” Chris Tubbs remembered. There was a time, Chris said, when Zach thought he could be a firefighter. Their family has a background in military, fire and police service — uncles, aunts and cousins have served and are serving. Zach’s grandfather was a career Navy officer. Tubbs is continuing his family’s tradition of public service in his own way. When Tubbs went back to Camp Pendleton, Calif., on Aug. 23, he returned as a corporal, a new rank he achieved while overseas. But his greatest pride while deployed, he said, was serving alongside his fellow o Worshi Marines.

The Democratic candidate for governor, Jay Inslee, spoke to the Mercer Island Rotary at their meeting last Tuesday at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center. Inslee, invited by Mercer Island City Councilman Mike Cero, said his connection to the Island was cemented long ago when he was the recipient of a sharp elbow in the face from a player during a basketball game against the Ed Pepple-coached Islanders. He had no ill feelings, he said, but apparently a long memory. Joined at the lunch with his wife and his motherin-law, Inslee outlined his plan for a “working Washington,” where he said 300,000 people are now out of work. Wearing a bright red Washington Apple lapel pin, he took a great deal of time to emphasize his connection to all of the state —

not just west of the Cascade Mountains. He mentioned the places where he has not only visited during his campaign but also the number of places he has lived or worked. He said the state must take advantage of its inherent “genius of innovation” in high tech, aerospace and biosciences to create new jobs. He listed clean energy and the need to increase the commercialization of research and development at universities as ways to spur growth. He believes an emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as early as possible for students will contribute to that effort. Beyond the economy, Inslee said that he believes Washington’s core values, in particular the right to privacy, must be upheld. He supports gay marriage and abortion. “I am proud of the recognition of the full diversity of this state,” he said. He does not, however, support initiative 1240 to allow public charter schools in Washington state. “I am concerned,” he said, “about siphoning off any dollars from our public schools.”

Building | FROM 1 and that changes to make it fit Mercer Island planning and building codes were expected. However, the three made it clear that they wish to build the site to its maximum height, and presented the commission with preliminary drawings that showed five stories above ground level. The site is zoned under Town Center development and design standards that would allow between up to five above ground stories of mixed commercial and residential use. The city code indicates that four stories are not to exceed 52 feet in height. Five stories cannot exceed 65 feet. Under city code, a fifth story is only allowed if the developer constructs what is termed a ‘significant public amenity.’ The project architect, Jim Bedoia, proposed a pedestrian plaza that would extend to the plaza taking

shape in front of the Aviara project, which would fulfill that obligation. Yet, city planning staff has said that option has already been exercised by Aviara and cannot be used again on that block. Only one building can take the plaza option. The city review states: “Although page 3 of Exhibit 2 shows that the project site is eligible for a significant public plaza to gain the maximum height allowance, the property to the north (Aviara) has already integrated a public plaza into their design. MICC 19.11.050(B)(1)(d) states: Once a significant public plaza has been approved by the Design Commission;

no subsequent development may use a significant public plaza with respect to that site to qualify for the maximum building height, but will still be eligible for the maximum building height by providing significant affordable housing.” The developer does not want to use the affordable housing option, saying it will make the project “more expensive.” The loss of rent income would cost the owner up to $75,000 each year. “It may not make the project feasible,” Bodoia said. If affordable housing was included in the project, between 14 and 16 units of the total would be required to be offered at rent that was affordable to persons whose income was 60 percent of the median income level for King County. HUD

standards show that in order to qualify for (moderate) affordable housing, the income level for a twoperson household in King County could not exceed $42,420. Affordable rent for that household would be $1,056. According to George Steier at the city, if the developer chooses to pass on the affordable housing option, and stay at four above-ground stories, it could build the project up to the ‘property line’ or to the edge of a 12-foot-wide sidewalk in front of the building. Other issues brought by the developer included dealing with the 12.5 percent slope on S.E. 27th Street, which the architect said brought several challenges to the site. Meeting the rules for including commercial uses along S.E. 27th is more difficult, he said. “The 50 feet of grade [along 27th] is the most challenging site in the Town Center,” Bodoia said.

The fine print:

Fees, photos, and much, much more By Reporter Staff

For those with a teen entering Mercer Island High School for the first time, it pays to be prepared. For what is ahead is a somewhat complex, heady and oftentimes expensive way to navigate high school. Keep your computer, calendar and wallet at the ready at all times. The first order of business is to log on to the school district website at www.mercerislandschools.org and sign up for everything that it tells you to.

Get informed Make sure you are a

member of the MIHS Announcement Listserv, a joint project of the school district and the PTSA that is used to augment other forms of communication. The Announcement Listserv is divided by class and is used to communicate timely announcements and event reminders. If you are already subscribed to the list, either as a MIHS parent or IMS parent, your subscription automatically continues. Also, sign up for the Emergency Listserv. It reports school closures and late starts. It is operated separately from the Announcement Listserv. Go to www.schoolreport.org and follow the subscription instructions.

It may be hard to pry information out of your student, but there are additional ways to keep connected with high school. Here are some suggestions: • Join the MIHS PTSA, and contribute to PTSA programs supporting student and teacher needs. • Volunteer and get involved. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with other parents while supporting MIHS. • Attend open houses,

curriculum nights and other events. • Subscribe to district and PTSA email lists (see above). • Read the monthly PTSA email newsletters. • Have the MIHS student newspaper delivered to your mailbox each month. • Attend parent education events throughout the year. • Read the MIHS daily bulletin online and stay current on MIHS activities and events.

Get ready to pay • ASB cards: At the high school, all students who participate in athletics, music, debate or any other student activity funded by the ASB budget must purchase these cards. The $55 ASB gives card holders a reduced price to school dances and athletic events. • Activity fees: Fees may be charged in those areas where student participation is not required and credit is not given. • Clubs: There are also many clubs and organizations that students can become involved in. Examples include Chess Club, Computer Club, CSE, Green Team, Game Club, International Club, Key Club, Kids Corps, Math Club,

Mock Trial, National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, S.A.V.E., Senior Service Club, Ultimate Frisbee, etc. Each may have its own set of fees to attend events, buy supplies, T-shirts, etc. • Athletics: A $175 fee is required each sports season for participation in interscholastic athletics. Fees are capped at $350 per student each school year or $700 per family each school year. This fee goes to the high school’s Associated Student Body fund to help cover athletic costs. Don’t forget the extras for sports teams, bags, uniforms, embroidered jackets, pants, shoes and other assorted gear. Sweatshirts, T-shirts, athletic bags and assorted swag starts at $17 for T-shirts, $35 for sweatshirts, $60 for an Islander duffle bag, and $100 for a soccer stadium coat. • Event tickets: Regular season tickets to attend athletic events will now be $7 for adults and high school students without ASB cards. Reduced ticket prices are charged for visiting school students; no charge for those over 65 or younger children with adults. • Music fees: Fees may not be charged for use of district-owned uniforms in classes for which credit is given. Yet, students are required to maintain and return uniforms in a clean and pressed condition at their own expense. A fee may be charged to defray transportation costs when ensembles travel to and from

performances and competitions. For school-owned musical instruments, an annual nonrefundable fee shall be required of all students checking out and using school musical instruments. • Materials fees: Fees for take-home projects may be charged in certain classes. These materials shall be sold to students at cost. • Art fees: All art classes have a $35 lab fee, photography has a $45 lab fee plus material charges, and AP studio art is $45. Yearbook: Each year, MIHS publishes an annual yearbook that may be purchased for $65. Students wishing to purchase the yearbook should do so by the end of the fall. Yearbooks are not available for sale at the end of the school year. • Parking fees and fines: Individual student parking passes will cost $75 per semester. Student groups of three or more that apply and receive a carpooling pass will have their parking fee waived.

MIHS important numbers to know Here are some phone numbers for MIHS that might come in handy this school year: • Attendance office – Barb Hallgren, secretary: (206) 236-3346 • Vicki Puckett, principal: (206) 236-3350

Spots will be assigned in the fall through a lottery for each lot. Vehicles parked illegally will be subjected to ticketing. A fine of $50 will be charged for the first violation, $75 for the second violation, and $100 for the third violation, and the car will be tagged for towing. All parking fines are due at the time of violation.

Miscellany Here are a few items that might be easily missed, but are worth knowing. • The MIHS campus is closed for freshmen. Freshmen must remain on campus during their school day. The campus is open for all other students, meaning they can leave during the day and return. • Special delivery requests such as messages, lunches, supplies, homework, flowers, food, birthday gifts, or other items will not be allowed due to the overwhelming number of requests. Items may be brought to the Attendance Office for pick-up, but will not be delivered to classrooms. • Lockers are available: No fee is charged for use of lockers at the high school. • Craig Olson, associate principal: (206) 236-3386 • Jeff D’Ambrosio, associate principal: (206) 236-6629 • Jamie Prescott, athletic director: (206) 236-3387 • Suzy Albrecht, administrative assistant: (206) 236-3350 • Jean Field, secretary: (206) 236-3349

Foundation | FROM 1

Adding value: the Mercer Island Schools Foundation grants to all five schools and Crest in 2011-2012. It plans to distribute the same amount in the coming school term. The 2011-2012 awards included money for everything from field trips into the woods in Redmond, to new computer software, to life skills cooking classes. Grants were made to hire artists in residence for drama technique, band and orchestra, and even technical illustrators. Foundation funds also helped pay for a trip to the opera, a spelling handbook and many kinds of books, new curriculum and cultural experiences. PTA organizations also offer enrichment grant funding to teachers as well. The foundation and PTA work together with the school district

Your

Last year, the foundation set out to raise money to make up for the loss of state funding, along with its usual goal to raise money to support both students and teachers. Last year, the foundation had set out to raise a total of $1.2 million to “Bridge the Gap” to keep a dozen teachers whose positions were to be cut. And they did. Along with the funds donated for enrichment grants, the foundation raised a total of $1,752,000. With cuts to school funding expected to continue or even grow, there has been even fewer resources for teachers to try innovative ways to teach and motivate students. To that end, the Mercer Island Schools Foundation awarded a total of $70,000 of enrichment

administration to make sure that as many requests as possible can be collectively funded, Yantis explained. At the same time, the foundation has made it easier for busy teachers to apply for the extra resources. Last year, the foundation began accepting the Universal Grant form from those applying for grants. Teachers only need to write a request once. In the past, they applied to both the foundation and PTA for funding using different applications. The school district, PTA and the foundation work together to match funding for each project or proposal. Grants that are for technology are moved to the district and are funded out of Tech Levy dollars

approved by voters. Basic education requests are moved to school district budgets, assuring that the foundation and PTA grant budgets truly fund enrichment for students throughout the district. The foundation also sets aside a portion of the $70,000 for Special Services to support requests from Special Education classrooms across the district. Grants this past year paid for a social skills curriculum, a sensory calming room and walkie-talkies for the staff. The 2012-2013 grant process begins in September with a presentation to the staff at each school. Teachers then apply and are notified in November about grant funding. They must spend the money for its approved use before the end of the school

year. Every spring, the foundation puts on its annual Breakfast of Champions event to help support Mercer Island schools. Last year, the breakfast — with matching grants — raised over $660,000. The event, held at the high school this past April, brought together over 500 supporters. Superintendent Gary Plano thanked those at the event. “Our students today will grow up and may one day find cures to diseases, find new sources of energy, and have the strong ethics and character to lead financial institutions, teach children and run companies. But they and we can’t do it without you,” he said. For more, go to www.mercerislandschoolsfoundation.org.

As technology evolves, so do the ways children learn in and out of the classroom. With constantly changing tools and trends, teachers can do more to stay up-todate to help children thrive. Many teachers are drawing upon social media’s natural collaborative element and ability to connect the classroom and home. In fact, some innovative teachers are using sites like Pinterest, Skype, Facebook and Twitter in a controlled, supervised way to make classroom materials more accessible and encourage conversation. • Learning from each other: Since technology can change so rapidly, it’s important that teachers share best practices by word of mouth. The newest social platform, Edmodo, built the first whole network of K-12 users and connects teachers with other teachers as well as parents, students and third parties. Edmodo members can swap ideas, share lesson plans and manage grades in a secure network accessible from school computers. With more than eight million users across 60,000 different schools, the possibilities are endless. • New tools: New technologies, such as tablets and e-readers, are helping students learn. These smaller devices offer students advantages over traditional computers, through interactive capabilities that bring lessons to life with enhanced images, video and audio. Tablets also have practical advantages such as “instant on,” all-day battery life, no cords, and are often more cost-effective than ordering new textbooks

each year. • Adding more fun: According to Open College, teachers who integrated digital games into lessons saw an increase in average test scores when compared to traditional, non-digital games. By making learning fun, you can get kids excited to learn just about anything and get some laughs along the way. • Turn it off: In this digital era, it is also important to make sure students have the time to unplug. Not only does time outside offer children opportunities to get necessary exercise, but a 2009 Yeshiva University study found that children who have more recess time behave better in the classroom and are likelier to learn more. So how can parents make sure schools have plans to fund programming that supports these new trends? Be proactive. For example, you can help now by nominating a new or existing K-12 program at your school to win a grant of up to $50,000 from The Clorox Company’s Power a Bright Future Program. To nominate your school for a chance to win, pick a program category from the fields of “Play,” “Create” or “Explore,” submit a photo and describe the program vision for your school at: www.PowerABrightFuture. com. Nominations close on Oct. 17, 2012. Education is constantly evolving. Be sure to stay on top of changes so that your children stay ahead in learning.

Make sure your kids protect their electronic devices at school By Reporter Staff

The technology used at school and at home by young people may be more expensive and sophisticated than in the past, but kids are still kids. Fall Sports Previews

By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

This fall, eight teams representing Mercer Island High School will take to the field, course and court, preparing for competition. Here’s a look at each sport competing in the 2012 fall season with team capsules for each sport. Full schedules can be found in this week’s special pullout sports calendar, and more information and pictures can be found online at www.mi-reporter.com. Stay up-to-date this season on all the latest MIHS sports news by following @ MIRsports on Twitter, and check out the Reporter’s Facebook page at facebook.com/ MIReporter.

Cross Country Coaches: Erica Hill and Tony Scaringi NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 130 LAST SEASON: After solid regular season performances, the girls team won the KingCo meet, took second at SeaKing districts and was seventh overall as a team at the state meet. The boys team finished third at the KingCo meet and took 11th as a team at districts. STRENGTHS: “We have a deep pool of runners, on the boys and girls side,” said head coach Tony Scaringi. “We have a lot of sophomores, juniors and freshman, but a good number of seniors, too. We’re deeper than in the past.” “There are a lot of upperclassmen on the boys team; the girls lost a lot of seniors last year,” said the coach. “But we have a lot of incoming freshmen who ran on the middle school team, and that’s really a

Thomas Brown, Ari Phillips, and juniors Sarah Bjarnason and Alida Scalzo. MEET TO WATCH: “We have three home meets this year at Luther Burbank Park,” said the coach. “We’re also going to Nike Pre-Nationals in Portland at the end of September. It features all of the top teams from the area, the western U.S., really.”

Boys Tennis COACH: Jamie Dieveney NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 90 LAST SEASON: The Islanders won their second straight 3A state title. The team won the championship by one of the largest point margins, after winning the title in 2010 by just one point. “Last year was such an accomplishment,” said Dieveney. STRENGTHS: “The varsity team seems to have a natural cohesiveness,” said Dieveney. “That’s critical. They enjoy each other’s company and get along, and I’m already seeing a strong work ethic. We lost our No. 1 singles player last season, and I’m looking to see who will step up into that spot. Last season, we won state by one of the largest margins, and to follow a season like that they’ll need a strong work ethic and that cohesiveness.” “We’re really deep this season,” said senior Kyle Baska. “We’re all very close.” FOCUS: “The first week is working on team placement, seeing who worked in the offseason, and where they belong,” said the coach. “It’s probably the most challenging week for the boys because they have to play each other, and it can be tough.” SENIORS: Kyle Baska, Josh Hartman, Max Tilden, Spen-

Boys Golf COACH: Tyson Peters NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 16 LAST SEASON: The young Islanders went 2-5 in regular season matches, finishing in fifth place at the KingCo tournament. Islander James Gendreau qualified for the state tournament, the only member of the team to qualify. STRENGTHS: “We’re very young, but I’m feeling optimistic,” said Tyson Peters. “It’s definitely a rebuilding year for us. Last year we were holding on to a few upperclassmen, but now we don’t have a lot anymore, so it’s looking at here’s what we have to develop. I see a lot of potential. This year is exciting to see where they can get, and our job is going to be motivating them to play.” FOCUS: “Really, we’ve been assessing where everyone is and taking it from there,”

fun and know each other well,” said Kim, which he hopes will help them on the course this season. MATCH TO WATCH: “The powerhouse this year is the same as last year — Interlake,” said Peters. “They will be tough to beat.” “Bellevue and Interlake, because they were so strong last year,” said Graham.

COACH: Brett Ogata NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 109 LAST SEASON: The Islanders earned their first state win since 1988, beating Ferndale last November. The team finished 8-3 overall and was 6-1 in KingCo. STRENGTHS: “The offensive line is really good. We have a lot of returning guys, and I’m really, really happy with what we’re seeing,” said head coach Brett Ogata. FOCUS: “Fundamentals,” said Ogata. “Making sure we know the plays and the routes.” “We haven’t had a bad practice yet, so that’s a very good thing,” said captain Risley Lesko. CAPTAINS: Brian Rauzi, Risley Lesko, Brian Higgins, Alex Emanuels, Sean Pyne and Matt Hassall. GAME TO WATCH: “We’re

Couer d’Alene is two-time defending 6A state champions, so it’s a great experience for the kids. In the

playoffs you don’t always get to play somewhere familiar.” The captains agreed their top two games to watch this season will be against Mount Si and Bellevue. “We’re excited to be the first team at Mercer Island to play a game out of state,” said quarterback Higgins.

Girls Soccer COACH: Terry Ryan NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 65 LAST SEASON: The Islanders finished the regular season in sixth place with a 3-12-2 overall record and did not advance in the postseason. STRENGTHS: “It’s going great,” said Terry Ryan, the new head coach. “The kids are fantastic and really working hard. We have a lot of strong leadership from the seniors — they

are good role models and setting the standard for the rest of the girls. Corey, our goalie, is incredible. She’s a huge asset for us, and we’re very blessed.” “We have a lot of experience,” said captain and goalie Corey Goelz. “We have 11 returners who have experience.” “Our speed” is a top strength from captain Alexi Odegard. FOCUS: Ryan said the first few days of practice were

really about tryouts and assessing where the team was. “We’ll be working on teamwork, fitness and ball skills,” he said of the first several weeks of practice. “They need to compete harder. The No. 1 goal is to compete and battle.” “Finishing” is the number one thing the captains said the team has been working on. “It’s something we couldn’t do last year.” CAPTAINS: Seniors Corey

Goelz, Laura Harrison and Alexi Odegard. “All of the kids — they are great, and it’s really encouraging,” said Ryan. “They are great kids and, really, I’m impressed in every regard.” GAME TO WATCH: “We have our jamboree down at Hazen on Sept. 1 for varsity and JV,” said Ryan. “Our first game is a non-league game against Newport (Sept. 6).” “We’re excited for Bellevue,” the captains said.

STRENGTHS: “A lot of guys played club in the offseason and will be able to hit the ground running,” said new head coach Erik Grosshans. “We have a strong senior class and everyone has good chemistry,” said senior David Rudokas. “We’re coming in with a lot of experience.” FOCUS: “We want to build off last year,” said the coach. “Focused on doing better, and I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen so far. The goal is to make state and getting back to state. It would be great to place.” “We’ve been working really

SENIORS: Sam Peterson, David Rudokas, Rileigh Greutert, Sebastian Aron, Connor Gullstad and Marek Prussak. GAME TO WATCH: “Bellevue is the defending state

We’re going to a couple tournaments, one in Portland and San Diego, and I know the guys look forward to those and getting out of town.” The seniors also added Newport to the list of games they are excited for.

COACH: Chauntelle Johnson NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 67, 42 returning LAST SEASON: The Islanders won their third straight 3A state title, also winning the KingCo and SeaKing titles along the way. STRENGTHS: “The depth we have, we haven’t had in a while,” said head coach Chauntelle Johnson. “We’ve had depth the last couple of years, but this is above and beyond that.” “We have a really big team this year,” said senior captain Maddie Larkin. “We have a lot of new girls and a bunch returning, so there is a lot of depth.” “I think we [the divers] all have a good chance of going to state,” said senior captain Meg Lindsay, one of five divers on the team. “We haven’t had more than two go to

Volleyball COACH: Susan McKay NUMBER OF ATHLETES: 43, 14 varsity LAST SEASON: The Islanders made the state tournament for the first time since 2008. The team finished second in the regular season, as well as the league tournament, and was fourth at the district tournament. The team finished with a 15-9 overall record. STRENGTHS: “We have so much experience on this year,” said coach Susan McKay. “We have 10 seniors this year, and the core of the team is the same as last year.

I think we have more passion and focus this season, and a lot of height.” “I told them last year, you don’t really know what playing at state is like, and what it will do to you, until you do,” said McKay. “It can be rattling, but I was very proud of how they played and the new goal is to place at state.” “Offense,” said senior Lorial Yeadon. “We have a lot of big hitters and blockers.” FOCUS: “Consistency,” said McKay. “Last year we did really well against strong teams, but sometimes against teams that weren’t

quite as good, we didn’t play well. We can’t discount anyone and have to play hard all the time.” SENIORS: Kelly Logie, Lorial Yeadon, Robby Blood, Sarah Kim, Carly Wilson, Lottie MacAulay, Maggie Paulich, Madelyn Bloom, Kris Brackmann and Lark Ruesch. GAME TO WATCH: “Mount Si,” said McKay. “We’ve been second to them the last two years, and we’re ready to end that.” “I don’t think we are doubting anyone, but definitely Mount Si,” said senior Kris Brackmann.

MEET TO WATCH: “We’re taking a trip to Arizona for an invitational,” said Johnson. “It’s our third meet and I’m taking 28 girls. I’m very excited for that. They will be able to get away and to compete against girls they don’t know and don’t have any reference for. Then there are the usual suspects. Skyline is always a fun meet for the girls.” “There are always the big meets against Bainbridge, Bellevue and Newport,” said Deiparine. “But every meet is important,” said Wold.

Ervin B.(Buddy)Moreman, Jr. Born on December 9, 1933 in Amarillo, Texas, Buddy Moreman died unexpectedly but peacefully on July 31, 2012. He grew up in Amarillo and graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Industrial Engineering. A member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, he was a proud Red Raider. Buddy loved airplanes. He took his first flying lesson at age 12 and was fortunate to be involved with airplanes and aviation for the rest of his life. An Air Force ROTC cadet, he received his commission as a 2nd Lt. in 1958. He was discharged from the Air Force as a B-52 pilot in the Strategic Air Command. He worked for Texas Instruments for two years, returning to flying when he was hired first by Eastern Airlines and then Pan American World Airways. His career at Pan Am took him all over the world. He volunteered for a Pan Am Technical Assistance Project during the Vietnam War training Vietnamese pilots and establishing flight schedules for a new airline, AirVietnam. His adventures in Saigon included taking cover under the bed in his hotel room during the Tet Offensive and a rendezvous with his future wife,Terry, on the Saigon flight line. In 1970, he transferred to West Berlin, Germany and Pan Am’s Internal German Service. He married Terry O’Sullivan in 1971 and they moved to West Berlin where they lived for eight years. After moving to Mercer Island, he returned to the IGS commuting to Berlin for three years. Flying the air corridors between West Berlin to West Germany made for interesting stories of being buzzed by Russian MIGs and being able to see in the windows of the apartments lining the final approach pattern to the runway at Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport. He was very proud of the many military charter flights he flew during the first Middle East War and he flew the last Pan Am polar flight between London and Seattle. Besides F-86s, and B-52s, he flew Constellations, DC-6s, Boeing 707s, 727s, 737s, 747s, and the Airbus A-300. He made his last commercial flight for Pan Am as a B-747 Captain. He spent the next 20 years as a flight instructor, working at Alaska Airlines and then the Boeing Company as a 737 Instructor. The pilots he trained came from all over the world. They started as his students and became his friends He is survived by Terry, his wife of 42 years; their two sons, Jeremy and Joshua; Kimberly Jacobs (Charles), Christopher Austin (Trish) and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Lou Ann Little, his brother Bill, and his nephews. Remembrances can be made in Buddy’s name to the UW Foundation/UW Medical Center, P.O. Back to school bus safety tips

Too much time indoors is bad for kids’ health By Reporter Staff

Not all American children get regular doses of fresh air. A 2012 report published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine found that only about half of U.S. preschoolers are taken out-

By Reporter Staff

A new school year means new routines. And if your child is one of the millions of kids who ride the school bus, you should be encouraged by U.S. Department of Transportation statistics that cite it as the safest mode of transportation for children to get to and from school. Nevertheless, riding the school bus safely does require children to be aware and follow specific safety procedures. That’s why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Chuggington, the educational animated children’s television program, have partnered to offer parents and children important school bus safety tips as part of the ‘Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!’ traffic safety campaign. The national traffic safety campaign helps parents teach their children about NHTSA’s recommended pedestrian, school bus, bike and car seat safety guidelines. Below are a few school bus safety tips from the ‘Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!’ campaign for you to share with your children to make riding the school bus a safer experience: • Be especially careful around the “danger zone,” which is 10 feet in front,

behind and on each side of the school bus. To avoid this area, wait for the bus at least five giant steps away from the road. • Wait to board the school bus until the school bus driver says it’s safe to do so. Kids should board one at a time and use the handrails to go up and down the stairs. • Once on the school bus, go straight to your seat and remain sitting, facing the front of the school bus. • Look out for cars before getting off the school bus. Once off, take five giant steps away from the school bus. • Wait for the driver or crossing guard to signal it is safe to cross the street. Always look left-right-left to make sure no cars are coming before crossing the road. Traffic safety education should be a positive, shared family experience. Parents can go online with children and take the pledge to ‘Be Safe!’ together at www.chuggington. com/safety.

In addition to the pledge (to date, more than 500,000 children have taken the pledge to ‘Be Safe!’), families can access a safety game, activities, downloadable tip sheets and even a free traffic safety app.

MI schools transportation information To learn more about the transportation schedules and routes for the Mercer Island School District, visit the district’s website at www.mercerislandschools.org. Bus route information and schedules are available on the transportation page, along with information about weather delays and things that families using the buses should know. Students who use Metro buses can find ORCA card information on the district’s website as well.

Too much time inside contributes to obesity, attention problems, hyperactivity and lack of appreciation for the earth’s resources. By taking kids outside regularly to explore nature, you can help them get physical activity and connect to the

world. From setting up bird feeders to camping, discover together what makes the outdoors great. Project Learning Tree, a nonprofit environmental education program, has great tips for family activities on its website to get you started. Visit www.plt.org/outdoors for more ideas.
