Discovering the best of the best on the Plateau By Dennis Box Editor

ou probably noticed The CourierHerald looks different this week – very different. This week the newspaper is celebrating the Best of the Plateau, from best pizzas, top burgers, spirits and some notable folks. This edition celebrates the top of the hill. The staff has been working on this edition for several months. It is the first time we have tried to focus an edition around a concept like the Best of the Plateau. Plateau-area businesses participated in a “best of” contest with voters casting their
ballots for top choices in many categories. The contest results begins on page 13. You will still find news, sports and other articles, but we thought for one week we would try something different. The newspaper you are more familiar with will return next week, but expect to see a some of the “Best of the Plateau” stories continuing. When the editorial staff started trying to figure out what stories to write for this
edition, we had so many ideas the problem was to pare it down to a manageable number. Many of my best ideas hit the editorial room floor with loud crash, thanks to Brian Beckley and his companion in the evil empire, Valerie May, the creative wizard. While I am talking about the best I need to say, for the record, there is no better editorial staff than those sitting in this office. Kevin Hanson, Daniel Nash and (even) Beckley put out award-winning writing that keeps the

Over the next few months there will be some construction along state Route 410 at the northeast corner of the intersection at Warren Street. Enumclaw’s first gateway monument sign will rise up and take form. The final design elements are still being locked down, but the plan is for a length of 20 to 25 feet and about six to eight feet tall. The Design Committee selected the Pacific Northwest conceptual design in August. The budget expenditure of $20,000 was approved by the City Council in the 2012 budget. The Design Committee spent time looking at a dizzying number of sign from around the state and beyond presented by Matt Mathes from Mathes Urban Design in Bellevue. The committee settled on the Pacific Northwest design. Ericka Shook, community planning director, said the plan is for the sign to be completed by the end of the year, depending on the weather.

s one tours the Plateau, there’s no shortage of places to indulge in an adult beverage. Or two. Our little corner of the world boasts the usual array of down-home bars and taverns. There are even a few places that like to consider themselves upscale and, mostly, there are plenty of establishments that fall somewhere in the middle. But for our “Best Of…” purposes, the Plateau boasts a spirited triumvirate of topnotch crafters: the two-man team at Carbon Glacier Distillery has turned out debut batches of vodka and whiskey, with an expanded liquid menu in view; the creative force at Elk Head Brewery has found a niche; and Wade and Judy Bennett satisfy the needs of a specialized market, concocting wines and ciders at Rockridge Orchards. Here’s a shot-glass size look at the Plateau’s potent potables.

It is always a source of amusement for me when I hear kids talk about what they are going to do when they “grow up,” or when parents mingle and discuss their child’s future career with absolutely certainty, as though it is something which should be determined at the tender age of 7. I remember the first thing I wanted to be in preschool was an astronaut, because I had, and still hold, somewhat of a fascination with outer space. I am absolutely terrible at math, however, which obliterated that dream like a comet. So, I wanted to be a cowboy, like every true-blooded American boy at the TJ Martinell age of 6. Then I wantGuest Columnist ed to become Robin Hood, because I liked the idea of taking my parents’ money, but then I discovered an institution called the IRS already did that. I can’t help but find a great deal of irony in the “what are you going to be?” questions people pose from time to time, because it’s absurd – unless you’re a fortune teller or a prophet. My mother, who is the music teacher at a private school in Bellevue, earned a degree in psychology, and then trained to be a physical therapist at a VA Hospital, and before that she had worked as the manager of restaurants in Spokane and Portland. Only afterward did she go back to school and begin teaching elementary in Seattle before finally finding her niche. Switching careers or degrees is nothing out of the ordinary. Most of the students I attended college with switched their majors at least once, if not three times. Why? Some of it is because too many young adults don’t know who they are and, consequentially, what they want to do with their lives. But a stronger reason is because there are too many factors which make up the fabric of life to determine what you’re going to do until you reach that point. For some, it takes years to realize. Others are fortunate and seem to be born with certainty of their fate and pursue it without any indecision. Two weeks into college I started writing to alleviate my restlessness which came from entering a university where I did not know a single soul. Though I had been the news editor for my high school newspaper, it never really occurred to me that I would be a reporter when I grew up. I thought I would be get a job in media, shooting and editing video. It was only after several coincidental (or providential) meetings I chose to major in journalism. Even then, it was a happenstance which got me involved in the university student newspaper.
LAST WEEK: Is your home equipped with a disaster preparedness kit?
The American people are not being told that the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas is much more than a simple trade pact. The architects of the FTAA intend that it broaden and deepen NAFTA. Instead of the U.S., Mexico and Canada, which comprise NAFTA, the FTAA would broaden NAFTA by encompassing all the 34 nations of the western hemisphere, with the current exception of Cuba. It
would deepen NAFTA by involving the FTAA in an ever-increasing number of functions that are properly the private domain of national governments. Even now, NAFTA tribunals are claiming the authority, approved 10 years ago by Congress, to overturn the decisions of U.S. courts. In 1993, Henry Kissinger lobbied for NAFTA by noting that NAFTA “is not a conventional trade agreement, but the architecture of a new international system.” The FTAA would be a further expansion of that architecture, with a shifting of control of government’s functions to unelected hemispheric bureaucrats.
The appeal to “free trade” in the name chosen for this latest power grab is a blatant deception. Trade under the FTAA would be highly regulated by a socialist bureaucracy, even more so than with NAFTA. Americans should appeal to their representatives and senators to reject any agreement to expand NAFTA into an FTAA. Current plans are to complete the hemispheric agreement by January and then present it to Congress. For more information, check out www. stoptheftaa.org. Edwin Storm Enumclaw
Blame often is unfairly aimed Government leaders are often criticized for the wrong reasons. Presidents, whether they are Republican or Democrat, are sometimes blamed for things that are beyond their control. Likewise, city mayors are blamed when they do not have the power to vote on issues that come before the council. This became obvious to me based upon the reactions of citizens to events while I was on the Enumclaw City Council. Part of this problem is that many people do not understand how government works. All elected government officials, whether they are the president of the United States or your local mayor in the strong mayor-council type of government, have very clear constraints placed upon them by the law.
In Focus Rich Elfers Columnist
It is part of the checks and balances that have filtered down from the Constitution and from our history. Government is designed to be convoluted and inefficient. There are several reasons for this: first, the longer something takes, the more likely all the voices of those concerned with new legislation have to get their perspectives heard. This tends to make the law better thought out,
100 Years on the Plateau
reflecting the concerns of a broader electorate. A second reason for the lawmaking process to be so complex is to avoid abuse by a few powerful individuals. There are many legal restraints put upon any elected official that limit his ability to bring about rapid change to a government. Those constraints on the elected official’s power are meant to curb individuals using government power for their own ends. All presidents and government leaders have the power to persuade and influence thinking but, in order for a president to create jobs, for example, he needs the support of Congress. No president, whether

Entrance to the Franklin shaft, Feb. 19, 1902. Five coal miners are at the shaft entrance to the Franklin mine. Three of them (one is mostly hidden) appear to be sitting in a large bucket, suspended above the shaft entrance. The bucket was used to raise and lower miners into the shaft. Around 1900, the Pacific Coast Coal Co. commenced an ambitious plan to dig a 1,350 foot deep vertical shaft to access coal seams deep beneath the productive Franklin coal field. The shaft was completed in 1903, but not before claiming the life of George W. Cannon, who slipped and fell 175 feet to his death. This shaft was never used for its intended purpose. It was initially covered with timber and in the 1950s railroad iron was added. The land was sold to Washington State Parks in 1973. In 1984 the Office of Surface Mining installed a secure heavy-duty screen encased in concrete and surrounded by guard railing so as to cover the opening yet still allow safe viewing. ELFERS FROM 6 Democrat or Republican, can arbitrarily mandate the creation of jobs. Laws have to be passed and money found to pay for them. Presidents are often blamed for things over which they have little control. Let me quickly state I am not taking sides in the current election. If Congress is made up of members of a different party to the president, it is even more difficult to get laws passed to bring about change. In recent times, the opposing party doesn’t really want the president to be successful because they want a member of their party to become president. Making the opposite party’s president look bad becomes part of their job description, especially in an election year. Mayors are also constrained in what they can do. For example, the mayor of Enumclaw fired a police lieutenant for insubordination. This process took about a year and a half from start to finish. The administration just couldn’t fire the officer outright because police and fire employees are under what is called a protected class. The officer had the right to appeal to the Civil Service Commission, which he did. Finally, the mayor’s decision was upheld. Had the commission ruled in the officer’s favor, the city administration would have had to rehire that individual with back pay and with all the bad feelings
that had been generated both in the police department and with that police officer. No wonder the city’s attorney warned of chaos if the decision to fire the police officer was overturned! This issue is still not finished because the terminated police officer has stated he plans to appeal the decision to the court. This case could take years more, just to fire one employee. It’s a very arduous process. It takes elected officials with high integrity to stay the course on these termination issues. No wonder some government officials sometimes just ignore bad behavior or find other ways to rid themselves of poorly-performing personnel. Doing this is cheaper and easier than going through multiple legal steps, both financial and political, and requires much less time. Being a government official at any level is a difficult job. There are many legal constraints put upon them that limit their ability to bring about change, even for the public’s good. It can be very frustrating. Remember this the next time you criticize a sitting president for not doing enough to create jobs, or blame a mayor for something that is beyond his power to fix. All elected officials are under a great many constraints when they make decisions. Ignorance of these restrictions gives constituents a skewed understanding of the government process.
NEWS BRIEFS Sign up now for Bras for the Cause, help fight breast cancer Entries are now being sought for the second Bras for the Cause fundraiser – a whimsical event that generates money to help women in need pay for mammograms. Contestants are encouraged to let their creativity run wild and decorate a brassiere and hanger. The only rule is that all bra surfaces must be entirely covered. The contest culminates with an event from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Rainier Room at St. Elizabeth Hospital. A committee will choose first-, second- and third-place winners, and with the purchase of a $1 tickets, all may help with a “voters’ choice” selection. All entries in the competition will be displayed at various businesses throughout Enumclaw. Entry forms are available at the Enumclaw Senior Activity Center, 1350 Cole St., or Cascade House Assisted Living, 2000 Mountain View Dr. There’s a $10 fee for each entry, which must be attached to the decorated bra and delivered to the senior center before Oct. 5. If your dog’s a real extrovert, Saturday may offer the perfect opportunity to let it strut its stuff with other pups. Local student Chloe Mitchell has organized a Buckley-area PetWalk to benefit the Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society advocates for animal protection laws, provides rescue and emergency response, investigates animal cruelty and establishes shelters across the country. The main event is a walk along the Buckley trail that begins at the Log Show arena at 1 p.m. There will also be a fashion show and talent contest replete with prizes. Animal lovers are invited to raise money for the Humane Society, and those generating the most money will win a prize. The cost to enter either the fashion or talent shows is $1 and a cute dog. But no dog is required to attend PetWalk; all are welcome. Mitchell will also operate a pet food drive, so those attending can donate containers of food fit for any species of pet. Saturday’s festivities are from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.. The Buckley Log Show grounds are at 344 N. River Ave.

Unfortunately, most highly-toxic mushrooms are difficult to distinguish from the nontoxic ones, so the best way to keep pets from ingesting poisonous mushrooms is to keep them away from areas where any mushrooms are growing. Contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately if you witness your pet eating a wild mushroom. • In order to generate body heat, pets who exercise heavily outdoors, or who live outdoors, should be given more food during colder seasons. Pet owners should know what kinds of venomous snakes may be in their environment – and where these snakes are most likely to be found – so they can keep pets out of those areas. While we don’t have a large number of venomous snakes in this area, be aware when hiking or traveling in central or eastern Washington.
• Many people choose fall as the time to change their car’s engine coolant. Ethylene glycolbased coolants are highly toxic, so spills should be cleaned up immediately. Consider switching to propylene glycol-based coolants – though they aren’t completely nontoxic, they are much less toxic than other engine coolants. Remember, Poison Control and your vet are always your best partners in helping with toxicity issues. Thank you to our readers – we welcome you back next month. White River rallies but slips at Orting By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
Three touchdowns in the final quarter couldn’t turn the tide for White River High Friday night, as the Hornets fell 28-26 at Orting High. The loss dropped White River to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in South Puget Sound League 2A play. The host Cardinals, in their first year as a 2A school after several seasons in the smaller 1A ranks, ran their record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in league action. What White River exhibited in late-in-the-game fireworks, Orting more than made up for in consistency. The Cardinals posted seven points in each quarter, which proved enough. Trailing 21-6 several minutes into the final frame, White River

capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown toss from Zach McMillen to Garrett Quiles. On fourth-and-four from the 10-yard line, Quiles took a short pass and bulled his way through Cardinal defenders to reach the end zone. Dustin France tacked on the extra-point kick to slice the Orting lead to 21-13 with 8:22 to be played. As quickly as the Hornets had gained new life, Orting dealt a crushing blow. Christian Yoro took the ensuing kickoff and dashed 74 for the Cards’ final TD. Battling the Orting defense as well as the game clock, White River mounted an impressive march that covered 81 yards in 10 plays. The capper was again a

It was a tough Friday night at Pete’s Pool field for the Enumclaw High Hornets. The EHS football squad lost 44-7 to Skyview, from Vancouver, Wash. The Hornets now have a 2-2 overall record with victories over White River and Heritage High and a loses to Central Kitsap and Skyview. The next test for Enumclaw is its first South Puget Sound League 3A game, coming at 7 p.m. Friday when the Hornets host Auburn Mountainview. Following the Lions, the Hornets will face Lakes, Bonney Lake and Peninsula in successive weeks. This week’s foe is 1-3 with a victory over Mount Tahoma and loses to Sumner, Camas and Battle Ground. Friday the Hornets faced a Greater St. Helens League 4A team in Skyview, which was ranked 16th in the state by maxpreps.com. Enumclaw’s score came on the ground with an 8-yard run by Mauricio Portillo. A couple of 15-yard penalties by Skyview helped keep the Hornet offense on the field. Caleb Gwerder converted the extra point giving the Hornets its only seven of the night.

WHITE RIVER FROM 9 McMillen-to-Quiles aerial, this time from 24 yards out, and after France booted the PAT the Orting lead was 28-20. A crucial onside kick was then played to perfection, with White River in possession at the bottom of the heap. The Hornets used three minutes and 40 seconds of the clock, celebrating their final TD when McMillen delivered a short pass to Quiles, who crossed the goal line with 8.4 seconds to play. Needing two points to tie the game, White River coach Joe Sprouse reached into his bag of tricks and called for a reverse to the Hornet with the hot hand. Quiles ended up with the ball but didn’t stand a chance, swarmed by Cardinal defenders. Orting had opened the game with a quick but impressive drive, using six running plays and two Hornet penalties to find the end zone. The lead went to 14-0 when dynamic running back Jason Yoro split the White River defense for a 55-yard TD gallop. White River got back in the game on the final play of the first half when McMillen spotted Keenan Fagan in a goal-line mob. Despite the crowded conditions, Fagan hauled in a 34-yard scoring strike. Orting’s third TD came near the end of the third period. The Cards took advantage of a short field, which came courtesy of a Hornet fumble. Jason Yoro’s third touchdown of the night was from 23 yards out and set the stage for the fourth-quarter fireworks. White River will be looking for a second league victory Friday night at Fife. The Trojans are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in SPSL 2A play, having dropped contests to Clover Park and Washington High. Through the first month of the season the Trojan offense has been potent, averaging 44 points per game.

Bennett might be farmers at heart – they’ve been at it for three decades now – but their leap into sweet wines and hard ciders opened up an entirely new audience for the Plateau couple. They started near an Enumclaw neighborhood, have operated since 1991 on 264th Avenue Southeast and became more visible four years ago when they purchased the farmers market just north of town on state Route 169. That’s where they operate an independent tasting room featuring their tasty elixirs. There’s types of hard apple cider and hard pear cider. The list also includes
a sweet raspberry wine, semi-sweet honey wine, bayberry wine and a spiced blackberry wine. Rockridge is a licensed distillery and coming in the not-too-distant future – meaning 2013 and beyond – the Bennetts will be producing brandy and whiskey. The tasting room – where everything sampled also is sold – is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week, as is the market. The Bennetts also keep busy hustling their products at five farmers markets in the Seattle/Bellevue area. More about their operation can be found at www. rockridgeorchards.com.

Let’s hunger for the purity of the word of God helped promote the common availability of the Holy Bible, many of us have multiple copies of this treasured possession. And yet, that word is not always what it seems. Perhaps through the well-meaning Kevin Graham efforts of scholars, writers, preachers Christian author and other purveyors, the word of God is often presented through altered theology. Denominations and independent ideologies have sprouted up through the centuries in an attempt to maintain consistency of belief in certain doctrinal views, but at what price? In some cases, it seems that what is presented as the word of God has been genetically altered, so that what is consumed and accepted by followers of Jesus is often a weak replacement of divine truth. This is how Bonhoeffer put it: “When we go to church and listen to the sermon, what we want to hear is his Word...The real trouble is that the pure Word of Jesus has

been overlaid with so much human ballast -- burdensome rules and regulations, false hopes and consolations -- that it has become extremely difficult to make a genuine decision for Christ.” Jesus warned the religious elite that they had a fine way of “upholding your traditions over the word of God” -Bible-based traditions that were trying to help the people follow that word. Paul prophecies that a time would come when “Christians” would no longer desire the purity of Scripture and would instead surround themselves with “a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” -- things that would come from the Bible, but would be harmfully altered. Under such conditions, what we often expect to be the word of God, only has a form of godliness, but it denies the transforming power thereof.

The first time I heard about the status of corn in our country, I was shocked. That sweet treat that tends to get caught in my teeth when I eat it is not exactly what it used to be. Apparently, corn has been genetically altered to resist pests, to combat the effect of weeds and to be sterile. In other words, growers can no longer replant the next season from seed grown that year. If you want to plant corn again, you have to get seed from the company that dominates the corn industry. From what I’m told, our government has made it illegal for commercial farmers to hold over seed from the previous year in order to help maintain this control of our food supply. As a Christian, it makes me wonder if similar effects have altered our supply of seed from the word of God. Thanks to the printing press and to those martyrs who

NOTICE Washington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (receipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d b u y e r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quantity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the delivery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a c o r d by v i s u a l i z i n g a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet. Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. When I got out of college, it took a long time for me to get into the newspaper industry, and a week before I got hired there was no indication it would occur in the near future. To this day, I accept the possibility that I may very well end up in a totally different profession when I am 30. In fact, this applies to life on a whole. No one can
know what they are going to be a year from now. Predicting someone’s career is just like trying to predict any sort of future event. Most often, the prediction looks ridiculous compared to what takes place in the year given. The 1939 New York World’s Fair was supposed to exhibit the “World of Tomorrow,” a peaceful, idyllic utopia of universal harmony. A couple of months later, the “World of Tomorrow” underwent the bloodiest and most destructive conflict in history.

I do not advocate dismissal of our traditions, denominations or preachers. It is the purity of the word that concerns me. It is a common adage that deceivers can twist the Bible to justify just about whatever they want, even well-meaning teachers and even our own minds. And so what is the remedy? I suggest that we keep a humble attitude toward what God actually says in his word; that we act like the Bereans who tested everything they heard from their ministers according to what Scripture actually speaks; and, that we acknowledge that there is a good chance that many of our cherished beliefs that mark our cultural and religious heritage should be willingly subordinated to the simple breath of God as recorded in our Bibles. The next time you celebrate communion, think of corn-bread and what it represents. We can only be truly nourished by the living word of God in his pure, unadulterated form. Let’s hunger more for the purity of his truth than for the acceptance of altered seed. Kevin Graham is a Christian author based in Enumclaw. For more, visit www.grahamAlive.com.
