Friends of Youth brings the Landing to Redmond Together Center features full-service drop-in area, overnight emergency shelter Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

After about a year of vacancy, the space that formerly housed the food bank at the Together Center, 16225 N.E. 87th St. in Redmond, is once again occupied and providing services for those ng Session! in need. The new tenant is Redmond-based Friends of Youth’s (FOY) full-service drop-in center and overnight emergency shelter, the Landing.

The 2,498-square-foot facility is a daytime drop-in center for homeless youth and young adults, and at night, it turns into a 15-bed overnight emergency shelter for homeless young adults ages 18-24. The Landing is fully staffed by trained professionals who work to help “The people you youth between the touch... A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday to celebrate the Landing’s opening, but the center has been up and running since Sept. 13.

NOT HOMELESS BY CHOICE

During Wednesday’s ceremony, FOY President and CEO Terry Pottmeyer spoke briefly to stress the need of such a facility on the Eastside. She told the full-house crowd that most people she encounters believe their clients cross the bridge from Seattle in seek of services. However, Pottmeyer said the majority of their clients have Eastside zip codes and find themselves on the street as a result of aging out of the foster system, escaping a difficult home life, the down economy or other factors. With the down economy, Pottmeyer said the demographic the Landing serves also faces the worst job market in decades. Some of their clients — they have worked with 2,527 so far this year — also deal [ more landing page 3 ]

City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione presented his proposal for the 2013-14 budget to City Council during Tuesday evening’s study session meeting. The new $581.5 million budget — which includes the city’s operations budget and capital fund — spans two years and is a slight increase from 2011-12, but City of Redmond Finance Director Mike Bailey said a better indicator of how the city is doing financially is to look at the number of city employees. From the 2011-12 budget to 2013-14 budget, the City of Redmond will have one less employee. Bailey said they did a bit of refocusing and after reducing hours for certain positions, employees leaving and one layoff, the city has added four positions and eliminated five. During his presentation to council, Marchione added, “We have reallocated resources from low demand in services to higher demand in services.” In creating the budget, the city used the Budgeting by Priorities (BP) process for the third time. According to the city website, citizen involvement is a large part of the BP process and city services are reconsidered through the prism of what citizens value most. The website states, “the final budget ‘buys’ only those services most valued by the citizens,” or what they consider priorities. Redmond’s six priorities, which were determined by citizens in the initial BP process in 2008, are infrastructure and

with mental illness. “Not a single one of (our clients) is homeless by choice,” Pottmeyer said. Before the Landing opened in Redmond, the shelter had been housed at the Bellevue Family YMCA five nights a week for 10 years. “‘Thank you’ is really inadequate,” Pottmeyer said. “They have been patient hosts…We are so grateful to the Bellevue YMCA.” From 2011 to when the per-

manent Landing location at the Together Center opened, FOY also partnered with four Eastside churches — Lake Washington United Methodist Church in Kirkland, St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Bellevue, Redmond United Methodist Church and Mercer Island United Methodist Church — who each hosted the Landing in their buildings on Fridays and Saturdays for a few months.

A SENSE OF STABILITY

Redmond United Method-

ist Church hosted the shelter from March to June of this year and Reverend Cara Scriven said things went well for them. She said having the Landing in a permanent location will be good to give clients stability instead of them always wondering whether the shelter has moved locations. Scriven added that she hopes her congregation will continue helping the Landing when they can since it is located only a few blocks from their church. While some people may have concerns about having a homeless shelter in the community, Scriven said it is important to not push people who need help away because we may have been where they are before or we may end up in a similar situation in the future. “They’re not different,” Scriven said. “They’re still part of our community.” City of Redmond Mayor John Marchione, King County Executive Dow Constantine and Congressman Dave Reichert — who represents

the Eighth District, which includes parts of Redmond — each spoke during Wednesday’s ceremony. Like Pottmeyer, each elected official stressed the importance of having facilities like the Landing on the Eastside. Pam Mauk, executive director for the Together Center, said the board of directors for the human services campus were very enthusiastic about having the shelter onsite as the nature of their work puts them in direct with the people who would utilize the Landing. “We’re very in touch with

the demand,” she said. “We’re just thrilled.”

ONE MOMENT TO CHANGE A LIFE

Reichert said he is proud to see the Landing open, recalling his time working as a youth counselor 20 years ago at his church in Kent. “The services were far, few,” he said. Reichert also shared his personal experiences with homelessness, telling the audience how he left home due to domestic violence and lived in his car.

A neighbor let him do his laundry at their house so he could still go to school. The turning point that pushed Reichert to get his life back on track came from one of his teachers who took the time to help him. He told FOY staff and other human services representatives in the room that they are in the same position as his former teacher and have the ability to make a difference. “The people you touch… (that can be) a moment that can change their life,” Reichert said.

There’s no time to lose with breast cancer By Cheryl Shaw

Every week, more than 100 women in our state are diagnosed with breast cancer. Being diagnosed with this disease is as scary as you can imagine. I would know. Two years ago, I was diagnosed. Because I had the unending support of my family, a great job with a compassionate staff, health insurance and — most importantly — an early diagnosis, I was fortunate. For far too many women — and men — in our community, this is not the case. I hear these stories every day. I hear about a King County woman, a single parent who received a breast cancer diagnosis. Too sick to work full time, it is a challenge to just keep a roof over her daughter’s head, let alone afford her cancer treatments. A friend shared a story about her cousin who, lacking health insurance, couldn’t afford to pay for breast cancer screenings. She has just been diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer. When I hear these stories it touches me personally and it reinforces the urgency of Komen Puget Sound’s mission. Women and families in our community are hurting today. We need to stop this madness, provide the support that they need today and find a cure for breast cancer now. Lives are at stake. There is no time to lose. All of us at Komen Puget Sound bring this personal sense of urgency to the work we do every day, as we have for nearly 20 years. Komen Puget Sound is the single largest provider of breast cancer

my turn

services to women in Washington state and the largest private provider of free mammograms to low-income women. Last year, Komen-funded mammograms resulted in a breast cancer diagnosis for more than 240 women in our community. Our Komen Patient Assistance fund provided financial assistance to more than 500 local, low-income breast cancer patients, covering their basic needs while they undergo treatment. While I am proud of what we have accomplished, I am even more mindful of all that still needs to be done. Too many of us have lost a wife, a sister, a mother, a daughter, a friend to breast cancer. While we at Komen certainly had our share of setbacks early this year, the setbacks have only strengthened our sense of urgency. We refuse to be distracted. There is too much work to do and too many women who rely on our support. Most

importantly, many of our donors, sponsors and volunteers understand our urgency and continue to help during this critical time. But it is clear that we need increased support to ensure that every woman faced with breast cancer is not a victim of the setbacks we have experienced. Together we can win our fight and end breast cancer forever. To learn more about Komen Puget Sound and our mission, please visit us online at komenpugetsound.org. And please do so today. There’s no time to lose.

Ref. 74: ‘Please vote for freedom for these families’ In the Oct. 5 edition of the Redmond Reporter, a reader asked us to “consider the rights of our children” with regard to Referendum 74. She cited studies that clearly show that children benefit greatly when raised in two-parent households and I know of no one who would argue otherwise. However, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, “Current research shows that children with gay and lesbian parents do not differ from children with heterosexual parents in their emotional development or in their relationships with peers and adults. It is important for parents to understand that it is the quality of the parent/child relationship and not the parent’s sexual orientation that has an effect on a child’s development. Research has shown that in contrast to common beliefs, children of lesbian, gay, or transgender parents: Are not more likely to be gay than children with heterosexual parents. Are not more likely to be sexually abused. Do not show differences in whether they think of themselves as male or female (gender identity). Do not show differences in their male and female behaviors (gender role behavior).” (http:// www.aacap.org/cs/root/facts_for_families/children_with_lesbian_gay_bisexual_and_transgender_parents)

They do acknowledge that although “children with gay and lesbian parents are as well adjusted as children with heterosexual parents, they can face some additional challenges.” But these challenges arise from outside their families in the form of “discrimination in their communities” and teasing and bullying by their peers. Denying committed same-sex parents the freedom to marry based on the notion that this will protect children ignores the fact that these families already exist and deserve our support. As a member of an open and affirming church, I have come to know several families headed by same-sex parents who are raising children. I have seen first-hand their devotion to these children and have come to know that although no two families are “the same,” we share similar hopes for our children. As a Sunday school teacher, I have also been some small witness to the hopes and dreams of these children, to the love they have for their parents, and their confusion that some in our community refuse to accept their families as real. As real as the one that my wife of 28 years have with our three children. For us to reject Referendum 74 is to further marginalize and cause real harm to these families. For us to do so, particularly under the banner of protecting children, is simply wrong. Please vote for freedom for these families. Please vote to protect all children. Please vote yes on Referendum 74.

Brian Anderson, Redmond

Ref. 74 ‘recognizes love and commitment’ I share Claudine Gallacher’s concern for children and feel the need to address her letter posted Oct. 5. I would like to offer insight from a parent’s point of view to how approving Referendum 74 will benefit children and families in Redmond. Children do best when raised by two parents, regardless of gender, as all studies in recent decades show. The Department of Health and Human Services, the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics (which specifically encourages Washington to approve R74) show through research that children do best in stable two-parent households. And when those parents are married, the children thrive even more! What improves a family is marriage itself, and for that reason we should be encouraging all families to seek and honor marriage. Rather than focus only on studies, and because R74 doesn’t legislate who can be parents, I would like to share with you my reality as your neighbor in Redmond. I am in a committed, loving relationship with my partner, Alex. I am a parent to one of the most grounded, intelligent 11-year-old boys you could ever meet. We are like so many families in Redmond; we balance the challenges of a busy 11-year-old’s schedule with swim team, soccer and cross country, [ more letters page 5 ]

October 12, 2012 [5]

www.redmond-reporter.com [ Letters from page 4] combine our commitment to volunteering for many organizations across the Puget Sound, involve ourselves as citizens of our community, and hold on to the family time at home that I cherish so much. Sound familiar? That’s because we are the American family striving for the American Dream — except for one thing: right now we can’t be

recognized by the state because Alex and I can’t get married. I don’t feel Claudine knows families like mine, or she would see my child thriving in the stability of love and family, regardless of gender. This is my reality; I live it every day. Approving Referendum 74 will strengthen not only my family, but Redmond. Calling my marriage “something

else” as you suggest only continues to hurt families by segregating our city, state, and nation — and is honestly unpatriotic. “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” was not written to be exclusive, but rather to be inclusive, even to committed gay and lesbian couples. Aren’t our American principles

built on more than what you describe? Doesn’t my son deserve more? My family, co-workers and neighbors in Redmond and across Washington will be joining me in voting to approve Referendum 74 this fall in an important vote. It recognizes the love and commitment that is already present, and

more personally shows my son that his family can be fully accepted by our friends, family and community. If you can’t approve it for me, I ask that you approve it for my son.

YWCA Works to End Homelessness No child should have to worry about what they are going to be having for dinner, or where they will be spending the night. Unfortunately, for many children in our community these worries are part of their reality. As our economy continues to slowly recover from the stubborn recession, homelessness remains an issue for too many people. Statistics show that families with children make up almost half the homeless population. U.S. Census statistics show that children living in single-parent families headed by females are four times more likely be living in poverty and seven times more likely to be living in deep poverty than children living in married couple families.

Did you know that 35,000 new cases of oral cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year? Oral cancer and oropharyngeal cancer may develop in the cheeks, lips, gums, throat (at the rear of the mouth), tonsils, and palate. Primary risk factors for both types of oral cancer include tobacco use; excessive alcohol consumption; human papilloma virus (HPV, the sexually transmitted disease associated with cervical cancer); accumulated sunlight exposure; as well as being male and 55 years or older. There are also indications that gum disease and poor oral hygiene associated with insufficiently cleaned dentures may play roles. Fortunately, early detection and treatment of oral cancer can significantly improve prognoses, which is another good argument for regular dental checkups. Early symptoms of oral or oropharyngeal cancers include a neck mass, sores that bleed easily, color changes in soft tissue, unexplained lumps, and changes in how the teeth fit together. At NW FAMILY and SPORTS DENTISTRY, we are a highly qualified and experienced team of professionals. We are proud of our staff - a staff dedicated to helping you look and feel better. Its goal is to advocate for social change and continue to work to end homelessness in Washington State. The Firesteel network links with both Facebook and Twitter.

and responsible government, 16 percent ($93.04 million). Between the 2009-10 and 2011-12 budgets, there was some reorganizing within departments to shift certain areas to more appropriate priorities. Because of this, the amounts allocated to each priority reflected these shifts, as well as reductions or increases to the individual priority. The Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center will be fully relocating to their new state-of-the-art facility, Dunmire Stables in Redmond, in early 2013. Officials for the organization, which provides equine-assisted therapy for individuals with disabilities, announced that they have completed the sale of their Woodinville location. “The greatest challenge we have faced over the years has been our inability to serve more individuals in need, as we’ve been operating at full capacity,” said Kathy Alm, executive director. “With the new facility, we can finally start carving away at our two-year waiting list of more than 200 individuals who have been waiting for these muchneeded services.” Little Bit’s mission is to improve the minds, bodies and spirits of children and adults with disabilities through equineassisted therapy, and to be an educational resource and inspiration to the therapeutic riding industry, both regionally and nationally. Little Bit has longtime support from notable local partners and individuals such as Willows Lodge, John and Kelly Olerud, GLY Construction and the Redmond Rotary.

Eastside author dies, leaves behind tales of his travels The year was 1995 and a 68-year-old Doris Bond had taken a trip to Italy as part of a mountaineering group. A widow of 11 years at that point, the now 84-year-old had traveled by herself and was not looking to meet or become romantically involved with anyone. “Some people look for people,” Bond said. “I wasn’t.” But then she met Frank King, who was also a member of the mountaineering group, and everything changed. “We were together after three days,” she said. Bond loved King’s personality, saying that he was always helpful. She said they also discovered they enjoyed the same things, describing those initial encounters as “magic.” As for King, who was 67 at the time, Bond said his reaction to her was a little different, but no less positive. “He fell in love with my brown legs,” she said with a laugh.

Doris Bond (left) and Frank King met on a mountain in Italy 17 years ago. They recorded their adventures in ‘Travels With Doris: Without Reservations.’ Courtesy photo The couple didn’t marry but they remained together until King died on Oct. 2 — about a week and a half after their 17th anniversary on Sept. 21 — after battling a number of health issues for several years. He was 83. While Bond met King in

a foreign country halfway around the world, she soon learned after that initial meeting that they were both from the RedmondSammamish area and “lived five miles apart.” With the Eastside as their home base, the couple spent a dozen or so years traveling around the world, visiting about 60 countries. Among their favorite places to visit were Ireland, Africa and India, Bond said. A number of the couple’s adventures are recorded in “Travels With Doris: Without Reservations,” a travel book King wrote, which begins with their first meeting in Italy. As the name of the book implies, Bond and King never made reservations for hotels or went on tours when they traveled. She said they liked to meet locals and see their countries through the locals’ eyes. “One night (in Guatemala), we thought we were going to have to sleep in a barn,” she said. “But (after meeting some of the locals) we ended up in a beautiful grass hut.” Bond said sign language played a large role in their

travels. “The people all over the world had open arms,” she said. “I just loved the friendliness and the warmth everybody had.” King wrote several other books about traveling in his later years on his own as well and often did readings and talks at the Redmond Library at 15990 N.E. 85th, which were put on by McDonald’s Book Exchange at 16415 N.E. 83rd St. in Redmond. While Bond enjoyed the world’s kindness, McDonald’s owner Anne St. Germain had similar things to say about Bond and King themselves. “He was so friendly and so open,” she said. “That’s just the way they are.” St. Germain said she recently visited King, and although he had battled a number of health issues — including heart problems, diabetes and kidney failure — it was easy to forget this while talking with him. He wouldn’t allow his failing health to get in the way of what he wanted to do if he couldn’t help it, she said,

adding that he even once convinced his doctor that a trip to Africa would help him recover from a recent surgery. Bond said King’s doctor described his heart as the worst heart he’d ever seen

in a living patient. She said it was King’s “will to live” that kept him going as long as he did. “He was a very strong and wonderful person,” Bond said. “Oh gosh, I can’t believe he’s gone.”

The Bear Creek Grizzlies volleyball program hosted its fourth annual Dig Pink event last Friday in conjunction with the Side-Out Foundation. For the fourth year in a row, the Grizzlies invited the Christian Faith Eagles to participate in the match and the Bear Creek gym was packed with pink-clad fans who cheered for their respective teams. By charging an admission fee, selling bright pink commemorative T-shirts and concessions, including pink lemonade and strawberry ice cream, Bear Creek earned more than $2,260 for the Side-Out Foundation. Dig Pink is supported by college, as well as middle and high school volleyball coaches and teams across the country. All proceeds benefit Side-Out, which awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families. Last year, both teams were top-eight finishers at their respective state tournaments. The Eagles finished fourth in the 1B state tournament while the Grizzlies placed fifth in the 2B state tournament. For the second time in this series, the Grizzlies

E

very week, 100 Western Washington women are diagnosed with breast cancer, which continues to be the second most frequently diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S., after skin cancer. We don’t yet know the exact causes of breast cancer, and many myths about breast cancer continue to exist. But probably the best way to prevent and survive a breast cancer diagnosis is to be informed. All women are at risk for breast cancer. Although this disease is more common in women over the age of 40, younger women can and do get breast cancer as well. To reduce risk, here are some things you should know. • If you are over 40 years old, have a mammogram. The American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and Susan G. Komen all agree that women age 40 and older should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Early detection is the key to survival. The five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early, is 99 percent. When detected at the latest stage, the survival rate drops to 23 percent. • Know what is normal for you. See your health provider right away if you notice a lump, swelling, changes in breast size or a new pain in one spot that does not go away.

• Live a healthy lifestyle. Maintain a healthy weight. Add exercise to your routine. Limit your use of alcohol. Breastfeed, if you can. And, since we live in the Northwest, current studies point to maintaining a normal level of vitamin D as helpful. However, if you fear that you might be at greater risk for breast cancer because your mother or grandmother had the disease, you should know that most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease. Only five to 10 percent of breast cancers are due to inherited genetic mutations. Other common misperceptions about breast cancer risk include underwire bras, abortion, plastics, deodorant use, breast implants, fertility drugs, hair dyes and trauma to the breast. One more thing. If you fear a breast cancer diagnosis is a death sentence, let me tell you that is also not the case. Today, there are nearly 3 million breast cancer survivors living in the US. And I am one of them. If you have ever seen our Race for the Cure Survivor’s Parade, you would see many survivors living happy and full lives 30 years after their diagnosis or longer. Above all, the best advice I can give is to ask you to take an active role in your own breast health. And if you are over 40 years old, and have yet to be been screened for breast cancer, do it today. There is no time to lose.

Redmond Police Department Commander Mark Hagreen noted that being prepared for an emergency is similar to having health and property insurance. “You’re in a much better place with that insurance. You’ve got peace of mind,” he said. Overall, one of the most important parts of dealing with an emergency is for people to be prepared to help themselves if rescue crews cannot reach them, Hagreen said. Also, Olson added that neighbors should get to know each other well, give each other a helping hand and share emergency contact phone numbers in case they need to contact family members should disaster strike.

Janeen Olson rolls out a foil heat-reflective survival wrap last Friday at the Redmond Senior Center. andy nystrom, Newspaper

Janeen Olson knows that she’s ready in case of an emergency. She always has a backpack close by that’s filled with a flashlight, blanket, bottled water and more. What Olson is concerned about is getting others prepared for emergencies like power outages, snowstorms, fires, earthquakes and whatever else may hit the area. She’s in charge of Redmond Ready, a service of the office of emergency management that encourages city employees and citizens to take a personal preparedness class and get trained in first aid and CPR. “Being prepared is our responsibility. You never know when you’re going to need to be prepared — when something’s going to happen,” Olson told about a dozen people at the Oct. 5 First Friday Coffee Chat at the Redmond Senior Center. “And there’s

that idea that we are there to help others — I believe in it.” The city held a Redmond Ready Day last month with 40 people in attendance at Overlake Christian Church. First-aid and CPR training was available that day for $14, and more people can take advantage of that training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 at another Redmond Ready Day at Overlake, 9900 Willows Road N.E. For information, visit www.ready.gov. Last Friday, while Olson discussed Redmond Ready, she got two women involved in her presentation by placing foil heatreflective survival wraps around one woman’s body and another woman’s legs. A few minutes later, she began heating up a freezedried chili macaroni and beef meal with two cups of water in a battery operated tea kettle. After eight minutes, the meal was ready; those who sampled it said it was tasty. Olson said that shopping at a $1 store can help fill one’s emergency

‘Scary’ investment moves to avoid Yes, it’s nearly Halloween time again, which means you’ll see plenty of witches and vampires scurrying around. You’ll no doubt find these characters more amusing than frightening, but you don’t have to look far to find things that are a bit more alarming — such as these scary investment moves:

A presidential election is almost upon us. But if you have young children or grandchildren, you know what’s really important this month is Butterfingers, not ballots, and Pop Rocks, not the popular vote.

• Paying too much attention to the headlines — Some headlines may seem unnerving, but don’t abandon your investment strategy just because the news of the day appears grim. • Chasing “hot” investments — You can get “hot” investment tips from the talking heads on television, your next-door neighbor or just about anybody. But even if the tip was accurate at one point, by the time you get to a “hot”

Thanks to everyone who voted for me in as the

investment, it may already be cooling down. And, even more importantly, it simply may not be appropriate for your individual risk tolerance and goals. • Ignoring different types of investment risk — Most investors are aware of the risk of losing principal when investing in stocks. But if you shun stocks totally in favor of perceived “risk-free” investments, you’d be making a mistake because

all investments carry some type of risk. For example, with fixed-income investments, including CDs and bonds, one risk you will encounter is inflation risk — the risk that your investment will provide you with returns that won’t even keep up with inflation and will, therefore, result in a loss of purchasing power over time. Another risk you will incur is interest-rate risk — the risk that new bonds will be issued at higher rates, driving down the price of your bonds. Bonds also carry the risk of default, though you can reduce this

risk by sticking with bonds that receive the highest ratings from independent rating agencies. You can’t always make the perfect investment choices. But by steering clear of the “scary” moves described above, you can work toward your longterm goals and hopefully avoid some of the more fearsome results.

Coach Veal was ‘a heck of a person,’ friend says Andy Nystrom anystrom@redmond-reporter.com

Dean Veal was a baseball man through and through, from the top of the order to the bottom, from the first inning to the seventh. “He loved the style of the game, said longtime friend and coaching partner, Les Dow, whose youth baseball club has been based in Redmond for 30 years. “He just knew the game and he was great with the kids. He seemed to know how to get everything out of them. He made them better, that’s for sure. Veal, 77, died Sept. 2 from lymphoma. Friends and family members will honor the longtime Redmond resident and 48-year youth baseball coach at 1 p.m. this Sunday at Hartman Park, home to many of the games he coached over the last six decades. Veal coached longer than any other person in Redmond baseball history, Dow said. He first coached young-

Longtime Redmond baseball coach Dean Veal died Sept. 2 from lymphoma. He coached in Redmond for six decades. Courtesy photo sters on a Snoopy Sluggers squad and finished up with Dow Baseball for the past 29 years, helping teams win 1,338 games, including the 2000 and 2001 AAA-USSSA World Series and the 2009 Triple Crown World Series. “He was probably the best coach I’ve ever had, and I’m not saying that because he’s my dad, said Rob Veal. “I never heard him raise

his voice to any of the kids or the umpires. He was a level-headed coach. He got upset with the umpires, don’t get me wrong, but he did it within the constraints of the game. He was very respectful. Rob added that his dad was a “model patient during his six months of cancer treatment, complaining only once during that time. He also recalled one of his father’s sayings that applied

on and off the baseball field: “It is what it is; get on with it; deal with it. Dean’s baseball career began at the age of 13 in Lemmon, SD. At age 18, the pitcher earned MVP honors in the North Dakota State Tournament and he later lettered three years in baseball at South Dakota State University and pitched in the Northwest Amateur World Series in Rapid City, SD. He loved playing baseball, but also enjoyed sitting in front of his computer and compiling Dow Baseball’s comprehensive statistics lists in every category possible, according to Dow. “He was pretty valuable — just a heck of a person, said Dow, adding that they’ll unveil a plaque on Sunday and dedicate the Hartman Park concession stand and scorers’ booth to Veal. There will be plenty of hot dogs and Tootsie Pops on hand since they were Veal’s favorite snacks.

Along with Dow, Steve Sparling was another one of Veal’s best friends. The two met in 1966 while they worked for United Control, which is now Honeywell, in Redmond and they bonded out of the office as members of the company softball team. They also played in baseball leagues together and Sparling remembers Veal as being a knowledgeable player and a star pitcher, shortstop, first baseman and hitter. They also played many rounds of golf together and embarked on numerous road trips around the western United States, visiting national parks and historical places. “As I ponder old age, I often think that one day I’ll play 18 holes with Deano and we’ll both par a tough course, then have lunch, then brag about our kids and grandkids, Sparling wrote in an email to Rob Veal. “I miss Deano terribly.
