This year’s general election is about statewide and national elections, including the top of the ticket: governor and president. But there are key legislative races on Tuesday’s general election mail ballot that are important to Renton, which is part of five legislative districts, the 11th, the 41st, the 37th, the 5th and the 33rd. And voters on West Hill are deciding whether to annex to Renton as well as on an increase in their property taxes to help pay for fire services. Although Jonas Clark-Elliott hasn’t found the right person yet, he knows someday he’d like to marry another man. He wants the world to know that it’s a stereotype that gays can’t have committed, long-term relationships. Although he says gays were forced into clandestine meetings and sometimes quick hook-ups because of the stigma and prejudice, that isn’t the case today. “Today, it’s nothing but a stereotype,” he said. “The gay 18 to 30 set does tend to be promiscuous. So does the straight 18 to 30 set. It’s pretty common for many young people, but it’s never all.” This is partly why the 33-year-old Jonas of Renton supports Referendum 74, which if approved would confirm the state Legislature’s and Gov. Chris Gregoire’s support for same-sex marriage. While Jonas waits for the final vote to be tallied, opinions on the issue vary amongst local churches. To Jonas, the decision is clear. “This isn’t about special rights for anyone, it’s about equal rights,” he said. “It isn’t gay rights, it’s basic human rights. 2 wounded; shooter commits suicide By DEAN A. RADFORD dradford@rentonreporter.com
Bullets shattered a sliding-glass door, later covered with plywood. Neighbors cleaned up the blood left behind after John McKay shot the boyfriend of his estranged wife, Tina McKay. There were bullet holes to fill. And Mark Martinez can only wonder what could have happened if any of his four kids had been playing in the yard Saturday afternoon. “We really lucked out that no one was outside,” said Martinez on Monday. There’s a bullet hole in his fence. The Martinez family was not home when the 48-year-old McKay arrived at Tina McKay’s duplex, one building over from where Mark and Aubrey Martinez live with their four children. McKay has a police record and restraining orders to stay away from his wife, related to domestic violence, according to police. “He is no stranger to law enforcement,” said Sgt. Cindi West, a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff ’s Office. McKay was also involved in an ownership dispute over Sunset Cars on Sunset Boulevard that’s continuing. Armed with a handgun, McKay walked into his estranged wife’s
home on Northeast Fifth Street in the Highlands not far from Renton Technical College at about 2:30 p.m. He fired several rounds, hitting Tina McKay’s boyfriend, who was taken to Harborview Medical Center with serious injuries. He is recovering from his injuries. McKay hit – pistol whipped – his adult daughter and her boyfriend with the handgun. They were treated at Valley Medical Center. Mark Martinez got a call from a neighbor who told him that someone had been shot in his back yard. But Tina McKay’s John McKay boyfriend ran to the yard after he was shot. And, then, McKay forced the 11-year-old son of Tina McKay’s boyfriend into a black 2011 Chevy Aveo and fled, according to Terri Vickers, a spokeswoman for the Renton Police Department. Renton Police alerted the King County Sheriff ’s Office that McKay might be headed for the Issaquah area. McKay drove east, toward an unincorporated area of Issaquah near May Valley where his estranged mother-in-law, Linda Ryan, lives. Just 13 minutes or so after that
initial call to Renton Police, McKay kicked in her front door, chased her through the house and shot her multiple times as she ran into the back yard, according to West. Ryan was taken to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries but is now recovering, according to West. McKay got back into his car, with the 11-year-old boy inside. Soon, McKay spotted his sister, who earlier had come to check on him, driving in the area. He handed over the boy to her and she returned him to Renton. Detectives interviewed the child, who told them he had heard the gunshots. “His (McKay’s) family had been concerned that he had been upset about his marriage,” said Renton Police Detective Robert Onishi. McKay had learned his estranged wife was dating another man. “This was a whole series of actions by a guy who was not in a good frame of mind,” said Onishi. “I don’t think anyone saw this coming.” McKay then went to his house not far from Linda Ryan’s home. Investigators believe he got some beer, West said. After that, sheriff ’s investigators don’t know what McKay did. At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, five hours after he shot his mother-inlaw, he was found dead by sheriff ’s deputies in the Aveo on Martin
Luther King Jr. Way on West Hill in Renton. Police had alerted the public and other agencies to be on the look out for his car; a tip led to his discovery. The King County Medical Examiner on Monday ruled his death a suicide. He shot himself in the head. West said the Sheriff ’s Office would continue its investigation. “We don’t want to make any assumptions,” she said. There’s no indication that anyone else was involved in the shootings, she said. This week Mark Martinez made an online request for help to replace the sliding-glass door in Tina McKay’s house and to repair the walls hit by the bullets. Martinez bought the plywood himself on Sunday to cover the damaged sliding-glass door. Contact him at mark76wa@ comcast.net. While Martinez and McKay’s landlord were doing repairs Sunday and picking up glass, Martinez’s wife Aubrey was cleaning up the blood in the kitchen. “We didn’t want them to come home and deal with that,” he said. Martinez said Tina McKay moved in last summer. He didn’t know the boyfriend’s name. He described them as “nice regular people.”

Two teenagers could be charged with assault and a third with complicity to an assault after an incident at Lindbergh High School Oct. 5. The trouble started when a 14-year-old boy came up and stole a 15-year-old girl’s McDonald’s value meal, then proceeded to eat it. After he was done, he threw the bag at her. The girl then threw her halffull cup of pop at the back of his head. The boy poured his Gatorade on the girl and threatened to have someone beat her up after school. While walking through the parking lot after school, two girls grabbed the victim by the hair, threw her on the ground and started punching her. The two girls were later identified. One is a 15-year-old Lindbergh student. The other, a 16-year-old, who does not attend Lindbergh. The girls later admitted that they did not know the victim and only beat her up because the boy asked them to. The victim sought to press charges in the case.

Officers observed the following car swerving and following too closely for safety. The driver also had his arm out the window, pointing at the car in front of him. After being pulled over, the 49-year-old man told police he was following the car because “she did not belong on his street.” The man appeared to be intoxicated and accidentally pushed down the gas pedal when reaching for his wallet. Officers then saw an open bottle of tequila on the floor.

West Hill votes on fire levy levy will provide the funds necessary to retain firefighters and maintain service levels,” said Dave Nelson, the district’s public information officer. He pointed out that the costs of providing fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency medical services have increased because of specialized equipment, personnel training, supplies and reporting required by government regulations. As assessed property values continue to decrease on West Hill, the fire department’s primary source of revenue is projected to fall short of covering the cost to operate the district, he said. Revenues in 2012 are expected to be 21 percent lower than in 2009. Projections from King County estimate another 25 percent decrease by 2016 if these trends continue. The fire district has not laid off any personnel but has reduced expenses
by 16 percent in many areas, including travel, training and moving all firstresponse vehicles and personnel to the main Skyway fire station, Nelson said. At the same time, voters on West Hill will decide whether to annex to the City of Renton. If annexation is approved, the fire district will exist until the City of Renton sets an effective date for the annexation. After the effective date of annexation, the residents would no longer pay the fire district levy. Fire District 20 includes both career and volunteer personnel. There are 13 officers and 33 firefighters. The district has a public information officer, a safety officer, two chaplains, and a full administrative staff, including a fire chief. District personnel respond to more than 2,000 calls for service annually with nearly 80 percent of those medically related.

Sheriff ‘s plans to hire 14 new deputies could benefit West Hill The hiring of 14 new sheriff ’s deputies to cover unincorporated areas of King County, including White Center, would mean additional backup for deputies who patrol West Hill, according to the Sheriff ’s Office. “Our White Center deputies work very closely with the Skyway deputies and back each other up on critical calls,” said Sgt. Cindi West, a sheriff ’s spokeswoman. King County Sheriff Steve Strachan recently announced the hiring of the new deputies over the next three months and will hit the streets at the end of 2013 after training.
“The southwest area has one of the highest volumes of calls in unincorporated King County,” said Strachan. “Adding more deputies will provide better service to our residents and increase safety for our deputies.”
Do baby teeth really matter?
YES – they matter a lot! Decayed or decaying baby teeth can potentially represent active infection in the mouth. Anytime there is infection in the body or mouth, it requires immediate attention by a physician or dentist, respectively. Long term, if baby teeth are left to rot, fall out, or get extracted, there is greater potential for permanent teeth to grow in and shift requiring future orthodontic care.

Voters in King County Fire District 20, which includes the neighborhoods on West Hill, are voting in the Nov. 6 general election on an excess property-tax levy to ensure the district can maintain adequate service levels and staffing. The levy, Proposition No. 1, supports the district’s fire protection and emergency medical services, facilities, maintenance, staffing and operations. The current levy to support fire district operations is $1.50 per $1,000 assessed value for a property. The four-year excess levy is asking for approximately 60 cents per $1,000 for the first two years and approximately 90 cents for the last two years, for a total of $3 million. “Without approval of the levy, the fire district will not be able to maintain adequate staffing and service levels provided within the limitations of the district’s regular tax levy. ● QUOTE OF NOTE:
“This isn’t about special rights for anyone, it’s about equal rights.“ Jonas Clark-Elliott on Referendum 74
There’s still time to cast your vote in general election I hope you’ll take a minute to read Ian Campbell’s letter to the editor today about how significant it was to him to cast his ballot in the general election. In a perfect world we would all share the commitment he shows to the democratic process. Thanks, Ian, for reminding us why we vote and why every vote counts. We, in Washington, are near the end of voting for our next governor. We, as a nation, are near the end of voting for our next president. I am torn this year, especially in the governor’s race. That’s a reflection of the independent nature of my politics. Maybe it was John Spellman and maybe it was Dan Evans when I last voted for a Republican for governor. There was a reason. They seemed to offer that nonpartisan take on our political world. They didn’t seem so far to the right. They seemed like they could work across the aisle. Maybe Rob McKenna fits that mold. I covered him as a candidate and then as an elected member of the King County Council for years, but not so much since he was elected attorney general. I’ve been impressed with his honesty and his intellect. And, on the other hand, is Jay Inslee, who came home from his years as a congressman in Washington, D.C., to run for governor. He’s a Democrat, of course, so in my view that gives him a head start. But it seemed like the Democratic establishment just welcomed him without question. My concern is that the hyper-partisanship of the “other Washington” has rubbed off on him. In the end, I’ll probably go with Inslee. Progress is being made to shore up and to reform our state’s educational system. I want those with a Democratic mindset to keep leading those efforts. I think McKenna could do that, too. But, frankly, I am not comfortable at all with some of the Republican legislative candidates, especially the novice ones, who are set to come to Olympia in full partisan regalia. I am just afraid that he could get pulled too far to the right if Republicans make deeper inroads in the legislature. Other statewide races aren’t so hard: I’ll vote against charter schools. I’ll vote for the legalization of marijuana. I’ll vote for Referendum 74. Marriage is the union of two people. It’s that simple. I’ll vote for Reagan Dunn for attorney general. He’s a Republican, but I think he’ll bring a keen legal mind to the job and he’ll also understand that being attorney general is also about politics. Nationally, I’ll vote for Barack Obama for president, of course. There aren’t many local names on the ballot this time around. But what happens in Olympia and Washington, D.C., really does affect what happens here at home. And, like Ian Campbell, I’ll fill in those ovals with a deep sense of responsibility. And, it doesn’t matter that I am an older person, Ian. Your vote counts the same as mine. Dean A. Radford

Renton
Letters to the editor It’s important to vote to make young voice heard My name is Ian Campbell and I just wanted to tell the Renton Reporter that I am honored to vote in this election. I feel like I can be part of something big in this government, and I feel like it’s also great to make a choice that could improve the government and make the U.S. a good place to live for another four-year term. I think everybody should have an opinion on what should happen with the country in which he or she lives, though I understand you need to be a certain mature age to vote and make a decision. When I fill out the ballot, I feel like I am writing out my name to the government because when my ballot is opened then my vote will be counted and I will feel more like I am part of these United States. I feel like it is also important to vote due to issues with this economy and I feel that voting will show how much I want a certain candidate to win. This weekend my parents and I voted. I feel like an older person because I got to put my opinion on a piece of paper. It felt like a lot of work having to think about who to vote for and that is because there were a lot of people who were running that I had never heard of before. I had never thought there were so many requirements on a ballot such as never turning in someone else’s ballot and I never knew I had to sign or put a signature on the ballot. I feel good about voting and giving my thoughts and I feel like a real adult.

Vote Rob McKenna for bipartisan voice in the state I urge my fellow Renton voters to cast their vote for Rob McKenna for governor. I have known Rob for many years and I have had the chance to work for him for the past eight years as he served as our attorney general. I have never met a more qualified candidate. I have worked for attorneys general Eikenberry and Gregoire – and those were two great attorneys general – but Rob is head and shoulders above the standard set by those two. Rob understands that partisan politics continues to derail meaningful dialogue and meaningful leadership. Rob managed the Attorney General’s Office in a non-partisan manner and has always done what is best for Washington state. While I have not agreed with every position taken by Rob, he has never put politics before service. I saw firsthand his bipartisan efforts in the national mortgage settlement (www. nationalmortgagesettlement.com) and I assisted in his distribution of over $43 million in relief from that settlement to homeowners and homeowner support groups – both done without political bias. Simply put: He is the best choice for governor and we need him in that position.

The King County Council will hold the final public hearing Monday on the 2013 King County budget. The hearing is at 11 a.m. at the council’s chambers, 10th floor, King County Courthouse, 516 Third Ave., Seattle. More than 130 people testified at three evening hearings on the spending plan. The Budget Committee’s
two panels — General Government and Public Safety and Physical Environment — have completed their review of criminal justice and health and human service agencies along with their assessment of the budgets of all the separately-elected officials and general government operations. The county’s budget is typically adopted before Thanksgiving.

Pastor says he’s protecting the definition of marriage [ marriage from page 1] nity of people, but trying to protect the definition of marriage” with his stance on Referendum 74. Jones’ definition of marriage is one man, one woman forever. He explained his views on same-sex marriage during a sermon he gave to his church this past summer. He urged his congregation to be compassionate to gay people. New Life’s members number about 3,700 on any given Sunday. “I think the church in general has been irresponsible,” he said speaking of religious institutions broadly. “The church has been very judgmental and hateful toward homosexuals. I don’t see Jesus holding up a sign saying, ‘God hates gays’.” Homosexuality is a complex issue, Jones said, and he doesn’t feel that it’s a greater sin than others. He would put his church in the “conservative-verbage,” but says he preaches the Bible and wants to show Jesus to the world. Pastor Kirby Unti of St. Matthew Lu-

He tries to teach his congregation not just how to discern what is right, but how to treat people with opposing viewpoints with respect. “At the end of the day, it’s the same value that we’re looking for in the church and that is, what is the loving thing to do,” Unti said. He does not tell his parishioners how to vote. In this interview, he spoke of his personal views on the subject. He equates the current domestic partnership law with the idea of separate but equal that the Civil Rights Movement fought against. “At the end of the day, I don’t believe you can be separate and equal,” he said. “I think if we’re going to treat all people fairly, then we need to allow people regardless of their sexual orientation to be fully embraced by marriage.”

form same-sex marriages if requested he said: “I would handle it the same way I would handle it with a straight couple. I would use the same criteria.” For Unti, the right to marry is based on entering into a lifelong commitment. “So, regardless of gender, what matters is are you in fact going to be faithful and committed to your partner,” he said. As Referendum 74 states, clergy would not be required to perform religious rites or ceremonies for same-sex couples if the measure passed. Faith leaders have the right to opt out of performing such duties, if it goes against their beliefs. Unti bases his beliefs on the idea that marriage is held as a high value in the church because it is a form of convenant. Convenant, he said, is a strong Biblical principal and in it is where you make binding promises. So, Unti believes that same-sex couples should be given the same opportunity as straight couples.

An I.R.A. is an excellent way to make a charitable contribution at death. The charity is designated as beneficiary and receives the proceeds at death. The charity is exempt from income taxation and receives the proceeds free of income tax. The charity uses the entire amount for its purposes. If the estate is taxable for estate tax purposes, the gift of the I.R.A. also gains a charitable deduction for estate tax purposes. If you intend to leave a portion of your estate to charity, make the charity the beneficiary of your I.R.A. I have more than 35 years experience and will handle your case personally. King County Metro Transit is shifting five bus routes and moving a busy bus stop to ease congestion and to help improve evening transit travel times for thousands of riders in downtown Seattle. Beginning Monday, Nov. 5, Metro will shift five bus routes off of Olive Way and onto Pike Street, and move a Fourth Avenue bus stop one block north. The revised routes are 301, 306, 308, 312 and Sound Transit Express 522 – routes that carry several hundred riders on 21 trips during the busiest hour of the evening commute. Maps of the revised routes are posted online for route 301, routes 306, 308 and 312, and ST Express 522. The route revision means these routes will again serve riders at the stop on Pike Street just west of Sixth Avenue. The change comes after a month of observations and rider feedback that identified lengthy travel times on Olive Way during the evening commute. On Sept. 29, these five bus routes were revised to travel via Fourth Avenue and Olive Way as part of major changes in the bus network in downtown Seattle. However traffic in the area – buses, general traffic and pedestrians – proved too congested. With the Nov. 5 routing revision, transit planners hope to see travel times improve by several minutes or better for riders on Olive Way as well as for riders of the routes that will be moved. To make the route revision work, Metro also will close the bus stop on Fourth Avenue between Union and Pike streets on Nov. 5. All buses that have been stopping at the stop between Union and Pike streets will serve the stop one block north on Fourth Avenue between Pike and Pine streets. This move will help buses and other traffic better make a right turn on Pike Street and head straight to the Interstate 5 express lanes. Other bus routes that continue north on Fourth Avenue also should see improved travel times. The moved bus stop affects riders on: Metro routes 111, 114, 210, 212, 214, 215 and 217 Community Transit routes 402, 405, 410, 412, 413, 415, 416, 417, 421, 422, 424, 425 and 435

School Board sets timeline for new school of an April 2012 bond measure which also includes improvements at many other schools across the district. The construction plan calls for the sixth through eighth grade middle school to open in the fall of 2016, which would accommodate students currently in second through fourth grades. Demolition of the old school is scheduled for June 2014. Prior to that, the district will relocate the Renton
Academy program to another district site. Construction on the new school is planned to begin March 2015. Planning for the school has begun as district staff work with architects and engineers on preliminary zoning and code issues, site surveys and geotechnical engineering, and preparing education specifications to include the number of classrooms and other learning spaces, common areas,
gym, lunchroom and more. The district is also working with school principals to form a parent-staff committee to create enrollment boundaries for the new school. Boundary work should be concluded in February 2013. Community presentations will be planned to show the design of the school when that work is ready. Parents and community members will also be engaged in naming the school.

Liberty soccer earns third straight KingCo title, advances directly to state tournament Hafferty. Hafferty has 10 goals and five assists, after making the all-state second team last season. Other key players have been Kailiana Johnson (nine goals), Kali Youngdahl (seven), Tara Johnson (eight), and Jacelyn Anderson (five). Nicolle Marlow has been excellent in the midfield. Amy Ellenberg has eight shutouts in goal. Nguyen said the senior group has proven to be very strong since she is Liberty’s fourth head coach in the past four years. The past two coaches had success but were also involved in club and decided to go back to coaching club after their season with Liberty. Nguyen said the timing was perfect for her to transition to high school coaching when her club merged with another club. She’s hoping to end the run of a new coach every season for the Patriots. Liberty’s lone league loss came against Mercer Island, 1-0. The Patriots lost their only two non-league games, but the games were against 4A title contenders, Skyline (13-1-3) and Issaquah (15-2-1). Liberty opens the 3A state tournament Nov. 7.

For the third year in a row, the most important thing for the Liberty girls soccer team right now is patience. The Patriots (12-3-1) locked up a third straight KingCo 3A/2A title last week, meaning a trip directly to state. It also means the team got to rest for a week while other teams worked through a gauntlet of district playoffs. “This week is a little bit tricky, but it’s a huge advantage for us,” said Liberty coach Tami Nguyen. “We can physically rest and get those nagging injuries get taken care of, but we have to mentally stay focused.” The layoff worked last year as Liberty made it all the way to the 3A state championship game before succumbing to Seattle Prep 3-2. “They are really determined to get back to that game and have a different result,” Nguyen said. “But we have to make sure they’re keeping perspective. You can’t overlook any of those games.” The Patriots have a different look this year after losing all-state seniors Cassidy Nangle and Kimi Fry. Leading the way this year is Kiana
