Port looks at private sector for Bremerton marina By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@centralkitsapreporter.com

Port of Bremerton commissioners decided unanimously Thursday night during a special meeting to seek proposals from private businesses to take over operations of the Bremerton Marina. The $34 million marina opened in 2008 but sits mostly empty with a vacancy rate that hovers around 60 percent. In addition, the marina’s annual $1 million expenses outpaced revenues by about $365,000 last year and it is on track to run a similar deficit this year. The facility itself, funded with a 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation tax, is now paid off.

Zabinski said that the marina is a huge asset to Bremerton and a great “doorstep to Kitsap County.” He, too, was highly complimentary of port staff and said that considering outside proposals to run the marina in no way should be construed as a criticism of their work. T

he USS Turner Joy museum ship on the Bremerton Boardwalk celebrated Halloween by becoming scary. The Vietnam War-era destroyer featured another round of the Halloween Haunted Ship tour this week. Amy Bodlorick, the haunted-ship coordinator, led the expedition through the ship Monday. She worked this year as a volunteer and said, “my salary goes to the YMCA strong kids campaign. Bodlorick said the haunting theme for the Turner Joy last year was based on the “Philadelphia Experiment,” which is a story about the destroyer-escort USS Eldridge, and this year the theme was continued. The story of the USS Eldridge has become part of conspiracy-theory lore. According to the story, the Navy was conducting a secret experiment that made the Eldridge invisible, based on Albert Einstein’s Unified Field Theory. The experiment was said to have gone very wrong. Bodlorick said the ship was said to disappear and when it reappeared some on board were melted into the ship, others went in insane.

Bodlorick said the proceeds for the scary experiment will be used to help the food bank, the YMCA program and rais-

ing funds to pay for placing the ship in dry dock. The tours continue through Saturday and the ship is located at 300 Washington Beach Ave. The cost is $10.

More than 50,000 letters soliciting help for the area’s homeless population are in the mail, bound for residents throughout Kitsap County. Volunteers and workers at the Kitsap Rescue Mission have been stuffing envelopes over the course of the last week, preparing for their first major fund-raising drive since opening in 2009. The Rescue Mission sends mail to about 1,200 constituents each month, but this is the first time they’ve attempted Wes Morrow/staff photo such a large mailing. Irene Brillhart stuffs envelopes for “(We) basically the Rescue Mission Oct. 26 want to get the word out about what we do and the needs that we have, to have that support in the community,” said Walter Le Couteur, executive director. Le Couteur hopes the drive will find people in a giving mood during the holiday season. “Most acquisition drives like this yield about 5 percent. I’m hoping and praying this one will be more fruitful,” he said. Between Tuesday and Saturday, 18 volunteers provided more than 200 hours of service stuffing envelopes, many even taking letters home to pack during the evenings. Burglary call at foreclosed home leads to stolen vehicles, arrest By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com

It turns out that stashing stolen cars in the garage of a foreclosed home isn’t such a good idea, especially when agents from the bank show up to winterize the place. A Port Orchard man was arrested Tuesday after reports of a burglary in progress at 1028 Bethel Ave., a vacant single-family residence in foreclosure. The home is shielded from the street by the Family Pancake House, but when folks from the bank that own the house came to check things out they discovered a man inside that took off running.

Port Orchard resident Terrance Puglisi, 45, who also goes by other aliases, was ultimately arrested after officers found probable cause for two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, possession of meth and less than 40 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The burglary call came in at 11:05 a.m. and Port Orchard police f looded the area and set up a perimeter almost immediately. Port Orchard Police Department Commander Geoffrey Marti said that Puglisi, at one point, ran through the front door and out the back door of Peninsula Credit Union before fleeing behind the

Dollar Store in the High Point Shopping Center. As officers were closing in on him, they found an abandoned backpack that contained a hatchet and a screwdriver. A short time later, they found Puglisi lying on the ground behind a large tree. Puglisi was transported back to the residence where officers discovered that the garage had been forced open, likely with the hatchet found in the backpack. Inside, they found two stolen vehicles. The first was a 1993 Chevy K-1500 pickup that was reported stolen from Big O Tires, located in Port Orchard at 7:16 a.m. Monday. The second was a 1996 Ford Astro van that was reported stolen from Novus Auto Glass, located at 851 Bethel Ave., on Sat., Oct. 27. Both vehicles had smashed windows and busted steering columns. Identifying markers asso-

ciating the vehicles with the business were also covered with red paint. “He used a can of paint and a spatula, so it wasn’t a very good paint job,” Commander Marti noted. Marti said that Puglisi made some incriminating statements, but it’s not clear if others might have been involved in the auto thefts and an investigation is ongoing. He also credited the citizens that stumbled upon the burglary. “It was an outstanding job of the people that went to the home,” he said. “The chances of us catching him would have been really hard without them; not only calling police right away, but watching where he went and directing officers without trying to confront the suspect. It led to him being taken into custody within minutes of leaving the house.”

Ballard Diving and Salvage raised the derelict vessel from Sinclair Inlet that sank this week. Commercial divers from Ballard Diving & Salvage working under a contract with the Department of Natural Resources utilized lift bags to raise the vessel and then towed it to a travel lift. The company removed the vessel from the water. Ballard Diving and Salvage had an oil boom in place during the operation to prevent any possible pollution issues.

Victim says burglary was no ‘Halloween prank’ By KEVAN MOORE kmoore@soundpublishing.com

A pair of Port Orchard men have been charged in Kitsap County District Court with residential burglary, something the men tried to write-off to cops as a “Halloween prank.” Adam Eugene Doty, 29, and Jarrod Allen Carter, 24, have both been charged after being arrested at 6:32 a.m. Sunday at 3967 Lovell Street in Port Orchard. Kitsap County Sheriff ’s Office deputies responded to that location following a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress. Once on the scene, officers found Carter and Doty across the street from the residence preparing to leave in a vehicle belonging to Carter. A police report states that both men admitted that they entered the victim’s residence “but claimed the victim was a friend and the burglary was a ‘Halloween prank.’ “The victim, though, didn’t see it that way. He told police that he recognized Carter “as a friend of a friend,” but said he wasn’t friends with him or Doty. Signs of forced entry were found on the back door of the home and the victim identified a TV located in the rear of Carter’s vehicle as having been stolen from his home along with other property and documents. A police report notes that a search of the vehicle also turned up stolen mail belonging to the Brass Ring Salon sitting on the passenger seat of Carter’s car.

s the 2012 election season draws to a close I have found Editor more folks than usual telling me they will be happy to see it end. I hear that during every political dodge ball season, but people appear more exhausted by it than usual to me … or maybe I am. I am involved in a number of Sound Publishing newspapers with some very nasty races. Probably the most hostile Dennis Box on the street level is a change of government measure in Black Diamond. Residents are deciding whether to change from a strong mayor system to a council manager. The city has been strong mayor for more than 50 years, but a large development has split the community into factions and one group wants to get rid of the mayor. In my experience, change of government votes always get very personal. Last week I learned about the Silverdale incorporation measure heading for the February ballot. The plan is for a council-manger form of government, which is usually considered to be the best form for new cities. A council of seven with a city manager to get the ball rolling is as good a way to go as any. The real trouble begins if the folks hoping for incorporation get their wish. Covington incorporated in 1997 as did Maple Valley. During the first four or five years Covington went through some serious growing pains — yelling, screaming, some bad words and not a lot of thought. Maple Valley went to battle around 2008. The best news I can provide for Silverdale or any other city, is the bad times eventually give way to calm. Eventually the government wheel must turn. I have a couple of theories concerning this. One is our system of governing can excel under the best and withstand the worst. So far I have been proven correct, and I hope that continues. I believe the reason for this can be found by reading the U.S. Constitution.

A vote for Hansen I voted for Drew Hansen for state representative and hope you will too. In a 30 year career in local government, in both staff and elected positions, I’ve had the good fortune to work with thousands of local elected officials and hundreds of legislators. In his first term as state representative, Drew Hansen ranks up there with the very best of them. Drew has helped job training programs at

Olympic College. He supports a great educational system. He’s focused on building the economy. He led the effort to save Kitsap taxpayers millions in our efforts to acquire 7,000 acres of forestland for future generations in North Kitsap. These are all examples of what Drew has done and show that he produces results. They give us confidence that he will be equally effective on our behalf in the future. See LETTERs, A5

Most important to me are Drew’s values and character. I’ve watched Drew and I’m impressed. Drew reaches out to his constituents for information, he listens carefully to us, he develops partnerships and then he delivers results. Drew’s outreach, openness and responsiveness are refreshing. Whatever issues arise in the future, I have confidence that Drew will work with us to find the right solutions. Steve Bauer Hansville

Commissioner R ing-Erickson fears some of the practices of the Council are posing a threat to Mason Count y’s autonomy. Hello! She is so right! As ad hoc organizations such as the Hood Cana l Coordinating Council gather more power, mainly through the lack of oversight by our elected officials, t hese orga nizations threaten not only the autonomy of the governments they are supposed to serve, they threaten the power of each and every voter in those jurisdictions. The life’s blood of these organizations is to usurp power from the elected officials and their constituents. Power coupled with funding from the state and feds makes these organizations a force to deal with.

Wisely, Mason County is drawing a line in the sand. I applaud you. Stay tough. Stay in charge. Perhaps a little bit of your wisdom will rub off on the elected officials supposedly serving our interest on the Puget Sound Pa r t nership, Puget Sound Regional Coordinating Council and the Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council. When an election can be determined by a few votes, this matters a great deal! How many people can take the time, during the business day, to pick up a ballot? What happened to the ballots that they were supposed to have received? Unfortunately, with so little time before the election there may be a great many people who will be denied their right to vote.

Zawadzki’s three touchdowns help push Cougars past SK CK will host playoff opener Saturday versus Roosevelt By CHRIS CHANCELLOR cchancellor@soundpublishing.com

The strategy might have been a draw. The execution was not. Central Kitsap capitalized on three South Kitsap turnovers to claim a 21-14 win Friday night in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Cougars (8-1 overall, 5-1 league) earned the Class 4A Narrows League’s second seed enter-

ing the state play-in game Saturday and will host Roosevelt. “That is big,” CK coach Mark Keel said. “But anytime you can play South Kitsap — and beat South Kitsap — is always good for our program.” The loss, coupled with Olympia’s 29-22 win, pushed the Wolves (6-3, 3-3) into the league’s No. 4 playoff spot. That means South plays next week at undefeated Camas. “We’re going to keep our

We’ll get through this.” Both coaches seemed intent on highlighting their star running backs against undersized defenses. The Wolves capitalized first when Gascoyne, who finished with 203 yards on 35 carries, began the second quarter with four consecutive runs. The last resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run and Gascoyne followed it with a two-point conversion run to give South an 8-0 lead. The momentum did not last long. CK faced a thirdand-15 on its ensuing drive,

but junior quarterback Riley Paschal found classmate Andrew Schwieterman near the sideline for a 22-yard completion to the Wolves’ 48-yard line. “Being a defensive back, the hardest throw to cover is a wounded duck,” said South coach Eric Canton, who was an All-American defensive back for the Wolves in 1985. “That’s exactly what it was. You lose all sense of timing with it. It’s very difficult to cover that play.” From there, senior running back Nick Zawadzki went to work. Zawadzki, who had 244 yards on 33 carries, took the handoff on five of the next six plays.

running back Marshaud DeWalt’s fumble with 1:07 left in the third. The later particularly was damaging for the Wolves as Zawadzki scored on the ensuing play with a 50-yard run to extend the Cougars’ lead to 21-8. “You can’t turn the ball over,” Canton said. “It’s pretty simple. Hang onto the football.” But in typical fashion for a rivalry where four of the last five games have been decided by 10 points or less, it was far from over. South advanced to CK’s 11 to open the fourth quarter before turning the ball over on downs. But the Wolves would not miss on their next opportunity, when a short punt gave them possession at the Cougars’ 39. Eight plays later, Gascoyne scored on a 5-yard run with 4:08 left. A three-and-out then gave South possession with 1:38 remaining at its own 48. The Wolves moved down to CK’s 19 when a pass-interference penalty negated an incompletion on fourth down, but Whatley was called for intentional grounding and was sacked to end the Wolves’ hopes of becoming the first team to win a road game in the rivalry since their 2005 victory at Silverdale Stadium.

Zawadzki finished the drive with a 11-yard touchdown run to cut the Cougars’ deficit to 8-7. But Zawadzki deferred credit from his three-touchdown performance. “My defense just stepped up,” he said. CK’s defense did just that, forcing a South three-andout. A short punt gave the Cougars possession at the Wolves’ 31. That again is where Zawadzki stepped up. After quarterback Logan LaFontaine, who missed the last two games because of an injury, entered the game and found Schwieterman for a 12-yard completion, Zawadzki rushed on the following four plays. The last went for a 7-yard touchdown that helped the Cougars take a 14-8 lead into halftime. “We knew we just had to come out and keep charging at them,” Zawadzki said. “We knew they weren’t going to give up. They’re a strong team.” While Zawadzki made plays on offense, CK’s top receivers did their best work on the defensive end. The Cougars thwarted a pair of South drives during the third quarter when Schwieterman intercepted Kevin Whatley and Greg Cleveland followed by recovering sophomore

look like, but it is worth finding out. Port of Bremerton CEO Tim Thomson, though, expressed skepticism about a private firm taking over the marina. “We don’t understand how a marina that is losing $400,000 a year can be turned around and made profitable for reasons we have not yet discovered,” he said. Thomson said he and his staff would be concerned about a private firm maintianing customer service and the appearance of the marina, which he said is “well documented as the best in Puget Sound.” “Regardless of who operates the marina, the port’s name will remain above the entry,” Thomson said. “We are concerned that once the loss of control of the Bremerton Marina occurs, the Port Orchard Marina, now in competition with the Bremerton Marina, will suffer.” Thomson said the worst-case scenario in that situation would be the current vacancies in Bremerton migrating across the bay to Port Orchard. Thomson also said that turning over the Bremerton Marina to a private operator would not give the port’s new marketing plan for the marina a chance to succeed. “The staff’s biggest concern is after so many years of private operation, the private operator will fail or default and return the marina back to the port control in inferior condition with a loss of current permanent boaters,” Thomson said. “The port will be worse off then, as it is now, with a particularly steep hill to climb to recovery and then to profitability.” Carol Inman, who works in the port’s finance department, also raised concerns during the public comment

their feet in the community, and Georgia’s House, a shelter for women and children. Georgia’s House is run in partnership with other local groups. The Weaver Foundation performs the operational functions, Kitsap Community Resources works on case management and ParaTransit provides resources such as the building and utilities. Despite the multiple fronts on which the Rescue Mission operates, Le Couteur says they hope to expand their outreach into an overnight

shelter and a program facility to provide help with longterm recovery. In order to implement these new programs, however, Kitsap Rescue Mission needs more funding. They’ve gathered their resources, called for volunteers and begun work on their acquisition drive to help get the word out. The Rescue Mission’s acquisition drive comes at a critical time for the county’s homeless population. As winter approaches, and snow is already falling in the moun-

portion of the meeting. “Public facilities should be owned and operated by the public that it has been created for,” she said. “Once you privatize a facility, it becomes a different entity altogether. If the commission decides to make the Bremerton Marina a private, for-profit entity, then you gentlemen are changing the mission of a public facility.” Inman said she understands the dire nature of the financial situation at the marina and appreciates that the port wants to rely less and less on tax dollars. She also said that she wouldn’t be opposed to privatizing the marina as long as the commissioners do their due diligence and make absolutely sure that the interests of the port and the public are protected. Inman also expressed concern about a private firm slashing rates in Bremerton, only to see the Port Orchard Marina suffer. “It’s not about the number of boats you have in the marina, it’s about how much the boats generate in revenue,” she said. Scott Alprin, who owns Emerald Bay Yachts, said he moved his business to the Bremerton Marina in 2008. “I’ve been waiting for four or five years now to see a turnaround and there has been no turnaround,” Alprin

said. “I’m sitting in front of a very unoccupied marina waiting for something to happen.” Alprin said the port has, “an obligation as an anchor business to help build growth and an economy that flows out of the marina, up the street and into downtown Bremerton.” Bill Mark told commissioners that he’s been living aboard a boat with his wife and dog for 13 years. He described the staff at the Bremerton Marina as being exceptional, but said that the reputation of the facility is that its too expensive and the water conditions are too rough. Norm Smith is also a boater, but keeps his vessel at a private marina and yacht club. He said that one thing that the Bremerton Marina is lacking, especially when compared to Port Orchard, is available parking. Another big problem, Smith noted, is ferry swells. Jack Stanfill told the commission there were enough people with enough ideas in the room Thursday night to turn the marina around. “This should not be turned over to the people on the outside to fix our problem,” Stanfill said. In all, some 21 members of the public attended Thursday’s special meeting.

According to statistics released by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services, more than 2,600 of the basic food assistance recipients in Kitsap County were homeless as of March. Adjustments to income tax withholding can impact payday, tax day The passing of the 2012 federal tax filing extension deadline on Oct. 15 means now is a good time to start looking ahead to the 2013 tax filing season. Many working taxpayers may benefit from a review of their federal income tax withholding rate, according to the Internal Revenue

Service. “It’s not too late to adjust your 2012 tax withholding to avoid big tax refunds or tax bills when you file your tax return next year,” said IRS spokesman David Tucker II. “Act soon, though, to adjust your tax withholding to bring the taxes you pay throughout the year

closer to what you actually owe.” Each year, millions of American workers have far more taxes withheld from their pay than is required, resulting in large refunds. They must wait for their tax return and refund to process before they can access their money. Tying major

financial decisions to the receipt of their refund can be stressful – this is especially true for taxpayers who depend on their refund to arrive by a certain date. They may experience stress from having to add an unanticipated federal tax bill into their budget. “By reviewing and adjusting your withholding rate, you are less likely to have to write out a big check in April to pay taxes due. However, if a life event results in the need to decrease withholding allowances or changes marital status from married to single; workers must give their employers a new Form W-4 within 10 days of that life

10 Job Fair Tips 1. Dress Professionally The general rule of thumb is to dress to fit the job for which you are applying. For some, this may mean a suit and tie; for others a pair of khakis, polo shirt, or button-down collar. 2. Communicate what you want and what you have to offer Be prepared to you elevator speech/60-second commercial. Include the following: • The kind of work you do, • The number of years of experience you have and in what industry(ies), • Some of your areas of expertise and/or key skills, • What you hope to find in your next job. Write down keywords to prompt your memory and control flow; add an ounce of conviction to what you are saying, and deliver it with genuineness until it rolls off your tongue and feels comfortable. 3. Know what the company does Check the company web sites and find out what company’s mission is, what type of jobs they are looking to fill, what are the specific job requirements. 4. Plan Who You Want to Talk to and in What Order Start with those companies that may not be the best fit, but a fit to consider. That way, you can hone your presentation, work on rapport building techniques, and lessen the nervousness you may feel as your start out. 5. Bring your resume Make sure you bring at least 25 resumes with you (no more than 2 pages maximum). Make sure they are targeted to your main industry objective.

event. Many workers can use the IRS withholding calculator on the IRS website, www.IRS.gov, to help them review their withholding information. Results from the calculator can help them fill out the W-4 form. IRS Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax, has information for employees and self-employed individuals, and also explains the rules in more detail. The forms and publication are available at IRS.gov or by calling 1-800-TAXFORM (1-800-829-3676).

6. Ask questions Because a job fair is a place to network and gather information about companies of interest, have some preset question generated that are focused on the career occupation of interest. Keep it simple, and take good notes. 7. Be aware of proper etiquette Once you enter the job fair arena, you are being scrutinized by potential employers. With that in mind, the following suggestions are offered: • If you are a smoker, don’t smoke just before entering the job fair, • Don’t chew gum, • Leave you cell phone in the car or at home, • Go easy on the perfume/cologne (some people have allergic reactions to these items), • Firm handshake when introducing yourself, and good eye contact, • Be considerate of other job seekers for an employer’s time. 8. Make your objectives known Make it easy and clear for the employer to understand what your career objective is, and what you can do for them. Always keep in mind that companies aren’t impressed by you rattling off your work history and experience if it doesn’t relate to their needs. 9. Collect business cards and take notes Listen closely to cues provided by the employer that you can speak to while in the employers presents, and that you can follow up on with the employer after the job fair. 10. Follow Up Send a thank-you letter within 24 hours to each employer you talked to at the fair. Additionally, send them a cover letter reminding them of your job fair conversation along with a targeted resume for a position that was discussed, and request an interview.

Prepare for a job The 2012 WorkSource Kitsap County Veterans Job Fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at 1300 Sylvan Way N.E. in Bremerton. Todd Wagner, the local veterans employment representative, wrote in an email, “The job fair is targeted toward veterans and military spouses, and it is also open to the

public. No potential job seeker will be turned away, however, the event emphasis is on our Veteran and military spouse job seeker communities.” Wagner suggested job seekers should come dressed for the occasion with an updated resume. “If they need to do some job search preparation, we offer workshops on a regular basis,” Wagner said. “Although the window and selection will be limited because of the time factor between now and the date of the event.”

Akins selected as fleet manager of year NAVFAC (Naval Facilities Engineering Command) Northwest announced Ray Akins was selected as the Robert V. Ronick - Navy Fleet Manager of the Year for 2012. “Ray is a hardworking individual that takes on projects others walk away from. In the course of his short time here, he saved the Navy and the taxpayer approximately $1.6 million dollars by reducing the Navy’s vehicle and equipment fleet, while still accomplishing the mission to our supported commanders. It is quite an honor to be selected for this award,” said Capt. Chris LaPlatney commanding officer for NAVFAC Northwest. Taking care of the Navy’s vehicle and equipment pool is nothing new for Akins. It’s a family affair. Akins is a third generation transportation worker and has worked in the industry for more than 16 years. As a Seabee, Akins took care of the Navy’s vehicles and equipment from California to Europe, from snowmobiles to buses, and forklifts to cranes. Akins is passionate about alternative fuels and what their increased use means to the

Navy. His efforts include bringing alternative fuels to the regions naval installations, and his efforts have resulted in a 300 percent increase in alternative fuels usage and a 50 percent decrease in petroleum usage. Because of his efforts, an additional $1.5 million was provided for Northwest Regional alternative fuel projects in fiscal year 2012. Increasing the use of electric vehicles is also in Akins view for the Navy in the Pacific Northwest. He is increasing electrical infrastructure capability at Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton and Naval Station Everett to support a larger fleet of electric vehicles and exchanging on-base petroleum fueled vehicles with electric vehicles through the General Services Administration’s normal rotation. The Robert V. Ronick Navy Fleet Manager of the Year Award was named after the Navy Fleet Manager in Youkouska Japan who died in 2003. This recognition is presented annually to Navy fleet managers who embody the skills, professionalism and can-do attitude required for excellence in fleet management.

Our values are at work every day. EMPATHY. INNOVATION. ACCOUNTABILITY.

I have seen and covered some poor government officials and just as many activists looking out for their holy self interests under the drapery of community watchfulness or patriotism. Our forms of government have withstood both, and held up under the strain. Covington is a good example. It is now one of the smoothest running cities I have ever covered, and the community is thriving. If the Silverdale incorporation goes forward, it may be worth while for the officials and volunteers to study what worked and didn’t in some of the cities that incorporated in the late 1990s. There was quite a number of them due to changes in the state law. The second theory is based on a conversation I had with Howard Botts, former mayor of Black Diamond. He was talking about council-manager and strong-mayor forms of government for cities. Howard said what makes any form of government work is the people, those elected and those who vote. It comes down to gradeschool civics. People matter, voting matters and staying informed is a responsibility.

from place to place, or living in their vehicles. Le Couteur stressed the diversity of homelessness in Kitsap County, saying that for many, lack of food or housing can hit unexpectedly. One day things seem fine, and the next they’re forced to seek assistance for their basic needs. “Homelessness doesn’t just affect the poor,” he said. The acquisition drive is just the beginning of the Kitsap Rescue Mission’s plans. Le Couteur said there are plenty of needs in Kitsap County that must still be met. Local shelters are often full, homeless single men are often ignored or neglected and the area lacks substantial resources for detox and longterm recovery. “That’s part of the reason for this acquisition, is to lay that groundwork out there for people to invest, and not just money, but time and even attitude,” Le Couteur said. “That goes a long way.”

in the hospital. He became a master lip reader to the extent that most people he met could not tell he was deaf. He married Lorrie in Chicago in 1951. They had four children and eventually, six grandchildren. In 1970 Dick was faced with a job transfer and subsequently moved his family to Poulsbo. This move would have an incredibly positive impact on their lives and the success of both his immediate and extended family. Dick and Lor lived in Lofall and Miller Bay before finally settling in Bella Vista on the Hood Canal. At 55, Dick retired from Civil Service at Bangor Sub Base and went to work at

Honeywell in Poulsbo for five years before permanently retiring. He kept busy working in the yard, salmon fishing, traveling with Lorrie to warmer climates and tinkering in his workshop. He never tired of the view and beauty of the canal and the Olympics. He is survived by his four children; Barbara (Ed), Gary (Sharon), Janet (Chris), and Amy and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Janemarie of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Cecelia, his wife Lorrie, and his brother George. Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Dick’s life at Kitsap State Park 1-5 p.m. Nov. 11.

Me: A Poetic Journal” (Tate Publishing), at her studio at 180 Sherman Hill Road, south of Poulsbo off Viking Avenue. Hooks wants her studio visit to be one of quiet inspiration. She invites visitors to journal their thoughts, with her original paintings and poetry serving as inspiration. “With pen to paper, find your relaxing moments as a time of creativity and course,” she wrote in an announcement of her studio tour. “ ‘Come Walk with Me’ is a seasonal expression enveloping a style of peace and Godcentered praise to all who venture along the dusty paths.’ ” Hooks (www.beverlyhooks.com) is a romantic impressionist painter. She paints romantic landscapes with personal expression and free-flowing style. Her paintings are full of subtle tones of ancient venues, yet are vibrant with fresh color and inviting movement. According to her publisher: “God’s gift of light and grandeur inspire her writing with the beauty of thought and expression.” Max Hayslette, who joins Eby Olsen Halvorsen at Magdalena Studio in Kingston, is one of the more prominent artists on the tour. His paintings have been available as custom art through Ethan Allen Interiors, and his dreamy landscapes of French vineyards and Italian coasts are widely available as posters. His abstracts and landscapes are represented in more than 350 private, corporate and public collections. West Virginia University is the home of the Max Hayslette Archives Collection. Elsewhere, artists lend an international touch to the tour. Karen Chaussabel, a ceramic and encaustic artist featured at Paula Suter Photography on Big Valley Road, is from France. The artists pay to be part of the tour, and money raised helps fund the foundation’s philanthropy (and, hopefully, artists sell some of their works on the tour). Smasne Cellars has rich history in Yakima Valley NW Wines I

f anyone was born to make wine in Washington state, it might be Robert Smasne. Smasne has been around vineyards since he was a child, munching on wine grapes and becoming intrigued by their flavors. Smasne is a fourthgeneration Yakima Valley farmer. Carl Smasne, his great-grandfather, emigrated from Czechoslovakia more than a century ago and settled near the town of Grandview. Carl’s son Chuck had eight children, one of whom is Robert’s father, Ray, who continues to farm in the valley today. “Some of my favorite moments have been spent on the family farm with my grandfather and father, who tell stories of how it used to be,” Robert said. “I especially remember my grandfather telling the story about the introduction of the idea of

a grape harvester and how the farmers laughed at the idea of a machine that picked grapes.” In 1998, Robert started at Covey Run Winery in nearby Sunnyside, working with such top winemakers as David Lake, Flint Nelson and Kerry Norton. In 2001, he headed to Walla Walla, where he worked as assistant winemaker at Pepper Bridge Winery and head winemaker for its second label, Amavi Cellars. In 2004, he returned to the Yakima Valley as winemaker for Alexandria Nicole Cellars in Prosser, before converting a Grandview warehouse into his winery in 2006. brands include Smasne Cellars, RobertO, Smasne Reserve, Farm Boy, Farm Girl and ½ Ass. He partners with soil scientist Alan Bussaca on AlmaTerra, Teres and WSU Museum of Art labels. If that isn’t enough, he also is the winemaker for Upland Estates, Skylite Cellars, Bartholomew Winery, Northwest Cellars, Berg Family Cellars and Challenger Ridge. Combined, he makes 35,000 cases of wine per year. “There is no other region in the world I would rather make wine from,” he said. “This area’s meaning to my family runs deep in my soul and in my wines.” Smasne has two Washington tasting rooms: in Kennewick and Woodinville. AlmaTerra has a tasting room in the Columbia Gorge town of Bingen, Wash. Here are some of Smasne’s recent wines. Ask for them at your favorite wine shop or contact the winery directly. n Smasne Cellars 2010 Upland Vineyard Aligote, Snipes Mountain, $18: A popular variety in Burgundy, Aligote is not widely planted in the Northwest. Smasne crafts it in a bonedry style and loads it up with accents of citrus, almond, banana bread, honeycomb and allspice. n Smasne Cellars 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia

Valley, $30: This wine is superb, with aromas of blueberries, molasses, black currants, raspberry jam and saddle leather, followed by delicious flavors of dark roast espresso, sweet, ripe cherries, dusty blueberries and cherry cola. Tannins, acidity and fruit all line up for a beautifully balanced red. n Smasne Cellars 2010 Upland Vineyard Chardonnay, Snipes

Mountain, $20: This is a delightful drink with aromas of toast, pear and cotton candy, followed by flavors of lemons, Asian pears, butterscotch and pineapple. It has a fair bit of oak to back the ample fruit and acidity. n Farm Boy Wines 2008 Bunk House Red, Columbia Valley, $16: Here’s an affordable blend of Primitivo, Syrah, Grenache, Malbec

and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of juniper, root beer, cinnamon, black currant and white pepper, followed by a smooth entry of plump blueberries, blackberries, plums and loads of chocolate, all backed with supple tannins and a hint of vanilla bean in the finish. n Farm Boy Wines 2010 Upland Vineyard Viognier, Snipes Mountain, $14: This is one of the best Viogniers we’ve tasted this year. It opens with that Creamsicle aroma we adore, along with notes of mangoes, cream soda, lime and pineapples. On the palate, it shows off flavors of cling peaches, honeydew melon, lime, honey and mangoes. — Andy Perdue and Eric Degerman are the editors of Wine Press Northwest magazine. Hank will be at the Poulsbo Petco this week hoping to meet his new family.

he U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a study in 2006 showing that birdwatching is one of the most popular hobbies in America. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service’s study, one of every five Americans watches birds. In doing so, birdwatchers contributed $36 billion to the U.S. economy in 2006, the most recent year for which economic data are available. The report, “Birding in the United States: A Demographic and Economic Analysis,” shows that total participation in birdwatching is strong at 48 million, and remaining at a steady 20 percent of the U.S. population since 1996. station. For a zealous few, it can mean flying thousands of miles on short notice to add a rare bird to their life list. For serious birdwatchers, at a minimum, it means investing in a high quality pair of binoculars and a good field guide. Of course, avid birdwatchers dream of visiting the nation’s birding Meccas at the height of spring and fall migration: Southeast Arizona, the Texas Rio Grande, the Florida Keys, as well as guided tours to hotspots from Mexico to Patagonia. Ecotourism is a thriving business. It provides a copious stream of revenue and related jobs, while helping grow an ardent political constituency for wildlife and habitat. It’s good for business and

good for the environment. With the rising cost of gasoline and an economy in the doldrums, however, it’s becoming less practical to fly halfway around the world or drive halfway across the country to view wildlife. But the good

news for those with modest goals and means is that you don’t have to travel far to find great birds. You can stretch your budget and conserve energy by discovering our local wildlife treasures. Kitsap County is

blessed with wonderful winter and seasonal birding. For many of the species that breed in the Arctic, the sheltered, icefree shorelines of Kitsap County are almost tropical compared to the Arctic in winter. Wintering

“Kitsap County is blessed with wonderful winter and seasonal birding ... so you never have to travel far from home.” waterfowl flock to Kitsap’s extensive shorelines by the millions and spend the winter months in sheltered bays and inlets all along our coasts. Kitsap has an abundance of accessible viewing points, so you never have to travel far from home. In future articles, I’ll talk about some of these local treasures, where to find them, the best times to visit, and what you can expect to see. Stay tuned. — Gene Bullock of Poulsbo is conservation chairman of Kitsap Audubon.

Sweet Red Pepper Sauce: Fall just got warmer

I

’ve felt so spoiled the past few weeks: It is pepper season in the Pacific Northwest. We are getting the most beautiful Organic Sweet Red Peppers from Persephone Farm in Indianola. I decided to make a simple Organic Sweet Red Pepper Sauce. Ingredients 2-3 Organic Sweet Red Peppers 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1/4 cup Spanish Olive Oil 1/2 tsp Sea Salt 1 tsp lemon juice Directions Cut the stems off of the peppers. Since the peppers are sweet, it is up to you if you want to use them. I like to use some seeds because they add more flavor to the sauce. (I also don’t like to waste anything, if at all possible.) Add all the ingredients into your food processor and pulse to desired texture. You could roast these

GLUTEN free foodies By lisa garza peppers for a smoky sweet flavor, but this time I wanted something fast to enjoy on top of my Organic Romano Beans. Luckily, I made some extra and saved some in a Weck Jar. The lemon juice and sea salt not only enhance the flavor of the pepper, but also act as a natural preservative. The next morning, I indulged myself with more Organic Red Pepper

Sauce on top of my poached eggs and a piece of crispy, crunchy Gluten Free toast. A few days later, I decided to make a light Gluten Free pasta dish. Instead of using a tomato sauce, I roasted some tomatoes from Persephone Farm and added some of my Organic Red Pepper Sauce. I made extra, put it in canning jars, chilled and took it to a picnic the next day. Delicioso! Salud! — Gluten Free Foodies is one of the more popular blogs on Sound Publishing Co.’s websites.

Come and enjoy good food, music & shopping!
