positive work moving forward. Garrido said that one way to ensure that forward momentum is to continue working on leadership continuity for when managers or directors retire or leave the county. “We are looking to be as effective as possible and we’re working together collectively as a government on behalf of the citizens,” Garrido said. Garrido also focused on community engagement. “I really believe I’m here to represent people,” she said. “I try to be as responsive and welcoming as possible for citizens’s opinions and skills.” Gelder said his election night success was the result of hard work. “The number one thing was just continuing to focus on doing the job itself and trying to make the biggest impact that I possibly could day in and day out with the various citizens I’ve been working with for the last 18 months,” he said. Gelder said the overriding themes of the campaign revolved around the budget, jobs and regulations. “We really are focusing on what we can do to support jobs and what the county’s role overall is,” he said. “We’re really looking at how our zoning and regulations support jobs in the local community. I think that really resonated with folks because it’s a tangible way we can truly impact peoples’ lives and livelihoods. In the night’s other marquee race for retiring Congressman Norm Dick’s 6th District seat, Gig Harbor Democrat Derek Kilmer won handily over Republican challenger Bill Driscoll, by an initial margin of 58 to 42 percent. “Tonight’s results show that folks want a congressman who understands what struggling middle-class families and small businesses are going through and will who cut through the partisan gridlock to deliver real results to help them. I’m honored by their confidence in me to make that happen,” said Kilmer, the Vice President of the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County, a nonprofit focused on creating and retaining jobs. “We need to get people back to work and get Congress back to work, too.” In the governor’s race Democrat Jay Inslee is leading Rob McKenna 51 percent to 48 percent.

Hatcheries, a useful tool I love this time of year. The chinook, coho and chum are coming back and we’re filling our smokehouses and freezers for the coming winter. I am proud to say that a good Editorial number of those returning fish came from our tribal hatcheries. We produce more than 40 million young salmon every year. Last year we released about 14 million chinook, six million coho, 20 million chum, 125,000 sockeye and 650,000 steelhead. Most tribal hatcheries produce salmon for harvest by both Billy Frank Jr. Indian and non-Indian fisherChairman, NW men. Indian Fisheries Some serve as wild salmon Commision nurseries that improve survival of juvenile fish and increase returns of salmon in our watersheds that spawn naturally. At a time when the state is cutting back on hatchery programs because of a huge budget shortfall, tribes are increasingly picking up the tab to keep salmon coming home for everyone who lives here. Tribes are doing everything from taking over the operation of some state hatcheries to buying fish food and making donations of cash and labor to keep up production. That’s because we believe hatcheries play a critical role in fisheries management. Without them, our treaty rights would be meaningless because there would be no salmon for harvest – by anyone. Hatcheries must remain a central part of salmon management in western Washington for as long as lost and degraded habitat prevents our watersheds from naturally producing abundant, self-sustaining runs. We can’t allow hatcheries to be an excuse to walk away from protecting and restoring habitat. In fact, we can’t have hatcheries without habitat. See Hatcheries, A5

of cool, clean water, good in-stream and marine nearshore habitat and access to and from the ocean. Because every watershed and its salmon are unique, we believe that the use of hatcheries

should evolve over time depending on the health of our watersheds. Those with little or badly damaged habitat will likely need long-term or even permanent hatchery production to provide salmon for harvest and

stock restoration. For watersheds where habitat can be restored, hatchery production may be reduced over time as the habitat is able to support abundant, naturally spawning runs. Hatcheries are a tool.

Page A5

Nothing more. Nothing less. We have hatcheries because of choices made in the past and choices that are still being made today about how we treat our environment. We think hatcheries work best when they work

hand-in-hand with good harvest management and are combined with protecting and restoring habitat. That’s because hatcheries are not a substitute for plentiful, highquality habitat and never will be.

than the state average. When the extended graduation numbers are added, Central Kitsap’s rate jumps to 90.1 percent, further elevating itself above the state average of 78.2 percent. “We’re exceptionally proud of the accomplishment,” said CKSD superintendent Greg Lynch. “And to me it’s a reflection of the quality staff and administrators that we have in the Central Kitsap School District that are committed to excellence.” More than 11,000 students attend schools in Central Kitsap, making CKSD one of the 50 largest school districts in Washington State. Among those 50 districts, Central Kitsap ranks seventh for ontime graduation and sixth for extended graduation. “When you have a multihigh school district … you’ve got larger challenges because you’ve got more students,” Lynch said. CKSD has three high schools: Olympic, Klahowya and Central Kitsap. All three have on-time graduation rates above 90 percent, and all three rank in the top 25 percent of similar-size schools within the 50 largest districts in Washington. Similar-size schools in this case meaning those with more than 500 students. “We’ve got additional challenges which make our accomplishment, I think, even more noteworthy,” Lynch said. “Our demographics are a little bit different from some of the other school districts that are ahead of Central Kitsap, so the hill we have to climb is a little bit steeper.” Despite all three high schools having graduation rates greater than 90 percent, the overall rate for the district is 86.9 percent because of alternative programs offered by the district outside of traditional paths. These non-traditional paths include the district’s online academy and off-campus home schooling, where parents may receive resources and guidance from district staff. Districts that beat out CKSD on the list included those with significantly different demographics than Central Kitsap, such as Bellevue, Issaquah and Lake Washington.

Bremerton passed the first test in the football postseason by running and throwing past Renton High in a 26-0 victory Friday at Silverdale Stadium. The Knights shut out Renton in the West Central District 2A playoffs and next up is Archbishop Murphy on the road to a state title shot. Coach Nate Gillam said in an email, “We are excited to have the opportunity to play at this level again. It has been a long time since Bremerton Football was competitive. The community has been very patient, and we appreciate their support.” The game against Archbishop is scheduled for 7 tonight at Silverdale Stadium. “Archbishop Murphy has a short but strong tradition

Central Kitsap ended the season in the first round of the postseason, losing 10-7 to Roosevelt High. The Cougars struggled with the size and speed of Roosevelt from the opening kickoff, particularly the Rough Riders’ running back, Taku Shiozaki. Each side made impressive plays and mistakes that were costly. Roosevelt scored all its points, a touchdown and field goal, in the second quarter. Central Kitsap’s defense was able to keep

the Rough Riders off the scoreboard in the second half. The offense put the team on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter after intercepting a Roosevelt pass. After scoring the touchdown, Roosevelt drove the field and fumbled. Central Kitsap recovered inside the 10 but gave the ball back on in interception. The Cougars made a dramatic last drive at the end of the game after Andrew Schweiterman picked off a pass. The Cougars’ drive ended with an interception in the end zone. The Cougars ended the season 8-2.

Swimmers headed to state meet By Kevan Moore kmoore@Soundpublishing.com

A handful of local swimmers from the Central Kitsap and Bremerton areas have qualified for this week’s state swim meet at the King County Aquatics Center. Preparing for fall

T

he rains are here, and the leaves are falling. It is time for some fall garden chores. Whether it be moving plants or adding some plants, fall is the best time to do such tasks. Did you take some notes of some tree’s fall color you would like to add to your own yard? It is

always a good idea to do some research about how big a plant gets before adding one to the garden. On that note, did a plant outgrow its boundary? It is time to get out that shovel, wheel barrow and some muscle and move it. Please, don’t just dig. Understand how the plant grows first. For example, if I were to

Gardener Joe A local gardening column move a tree I would measure the trunk and for every inch dig a foot of root ball. And if I were to move a shrub I would dig a good amount of roots along with it. I just started moving

some rhododendrons with great success. If a shrub is too big you may cut it back a third then move it. You may not get blooms the first couple of years. Another neat

Page A9

thing is plant propagation. This is at the base of the plant; where a limb touches the ground it will begin to root. Cut it away from the parent plant and, “bam!” a new plant. What fun for a gloomy day. If you would like to make more of the plant try some propagation. Take a limb and bend it towards the ground and put some weight on it and by the next fall it should begin to root. I have done that before. For any questions on any plants feel free to e-mail me.

thank you federal employees

Now it is time to winterize your sprinkler system if you have one. If not, begin to put those hoses away and cover your water bibs or at least get ready to. Give the lawn a cut short as possible then continue to lightly dust some compost on the lawn, and if it is too heavy with moss rake it first then compost. Feeding the soil is important for its health. I will go over more on this later. Happy gardening, Gardener Joe

his show from the newly named town of Truth or Consequences, people all around the nation were watching. According to Rogers, when the episode aired, his aunt in Massachusetts happened to recognize his mother and called to say she’d seen them on TV. When Rogers was two years old, his family moved from Truth or Consequences to El Paso, Texas, 120 miles to the east. The small town of his birth still played a large part in his life, however. Every spring, the town would commemorate the

name change by holding their annual Fiesta. And every April, the Rogers family would make the journey from El Paso back to Truth or Consequences. The Fiesta was the most biggest event held each year in Truth or Consequences, perhaps in all of southern New Mexico. Once every year, Ralph Edwards would land in town with his wife, Barbara, and a host of celebrities. “I’d go back to school and tell them, ‘I saw Marilyn Monroe … She gave me a kiss on the cheek,’” Rogers said. “I was about six years old, and all these people are going, ‘Oh yeah,’ sure.” The crowd of celebrity

guests would take part in a parade through the main street in downtown. Edwards would ride his horse and Barbara would follow behind in the convertible. The parade was only a part of Truth or Consequences’s celebration. Edwards didn’t simply bring celebrities to town so they could walk down the main road – he brought them to perform. Rogers’ sister, Beverly Neugebauer, remembers the variety show fondly. “Everybody went up to the high school, and we watched them all perform,” she said. The ordinary quality of the local high school would transform one night a year, as it filled with some of the era’s most famous stars. According to Rogers, Bob Barker, who would go on to host “Truth or Consequences” from 1956 to 1975, was the regular master of ceremonies. “The one that I guess that I remember the most was Doc and Kitty and all them off of ‘Gun Smoke’,” Rogers said. For Rogers, the annual event was of extra significance. It was as though the town transformed for a mas-

sive birthday celebration, both remembering the birth of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and of Ralph Rogers also. Not only did Rogers meet dozens of the world’s most famous celebrities, he was also given his own unique honor each year during the show. “Every year they brought me up on stage and introduced me as little Ralph,” Rogers said. The Rogers family began to form a bond with Ralph and Barbara Edwards, and as the young Ralph Rogers grew, he developed a relationship with his namesake. When Beverly and Ralph were still young, Edwards gave them a gift, “The Bumper Book,” that had a lasting effect on the children. “I kind of learned to read out of that book, and Ralph learned to read out of that book, and as I got older I found a copy of the book for my kids,” Barbara said. “That [will] always stay in my mind.” Rogers and his family continued to attend each Fiesta throughout his childhood, celebrating the birth of their city and son. When Ralph graduated high school, Edwards sent him a set of gold lacrosse pens. After his high-school graduation, Rogers joined the Navy as a weapons technician in 1970. He and Edwards continued to write letters back and forth while Rogers was away. In 1973, Rogers made the trip out to the festival, this time in uniform, where he was once again introduced to

all as Ralph Edwards, Jr. But that would prove to be the last Fiesta Rogers attended, and the last time he would see his namesake, Ralph Edwards. Rogers got married not long after the 1973 Fiesta and was relocated to Bremerton, where he has lived ever since. “I was in the Navy … I had two kids by the time I was a (petty officer) third class, so we never had the money to go down there,” Rogers said, “but my mother would always … tell me that Ralph Edwards told me to say hi.” Rogers’s wife told him once or twice he should go, even if on his own, to one of the fiestas, but he says he always felt it wouldn’t be right for him to go without his family. “My parents always offered to pay my way out there, but I’d never take it. I kind of regret that I didn’t do that.” In the early 2000s, Rogers found out that Edwards’s health was deteriorating, and attempted to reconnect with the man he knew as a child. He sent Edwards a letter and the two picked up their relationship where they had left off more than 20 years prior. They continued their correspondence for a while, until Edwards’ condition began to worsen. “I was going to go down and visit him and that’s when they told me he was too sick -- I waited too long,” Rogers said. Edwards’ health had worsened to the point that only immediate family were being allowed to visit. Despite being Ralph Edwards, Jr., Rogers couldn’t make the trip. He

had the money; his kids were grown; he had retired from the Navy; but fate had placed one final stumbling block between the two men. “[It] really felt like a kick in the chest, when I got the email back from them saying, ‘please don’t come,’” Rogers said. Rogers emailed back one more time, hoping that perhaps they could be persuaded, but he never received an answer, and a few months later, on Nov. 16, 2005, Ralph Edwards passed away. “I kind of regret not going back as much as I should’ve, but you can’t change what happened. And I regret not seeing Ralph Edwards in the last couple years of his life,” Rogers said. Ralph has visited his old hometown once since that last Fiesta in 1973. He and his family drove through on their way to El Paso more than 20 years ago, but it was not spring, and the Fiesta was not taking place, and so Ralph Rogers has yet to attend another Fiesta. Despite his long hiatus, Rogers says he hopes to one day return to his hometown of Truth or Consequences and see the Fiesta in person once more. “I’d like to go down there some summer,” Rogers said. “I understand it’s still going on. They still do it every year.” Rogers is already planning one visit out of state, to his sister’s home for Thanksgiving; perhaps this will be the first year in some time a Ralph Edwards, junior or senior, will attend the Truth or Consequences Fiesta.

BREMERTON — The stage version of “Steel Magnolias,” the funniest

movie ever to make you cry, continues through Nov. 18 at Bremerton Community Theatre, 599 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton. For ticket information, call (800) 863-1706 or (360) 373-5152.

BCT’s production is directed by Greg Williams. The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in small-town Chinquapin, La., where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done.

The play is alternately hilarious and touching—and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters. The cast: Palmer Scheutzow, Truvy;

Deborah Rice, Ousier; Barbara Miller, Clairee; Genevieve Emmett, Annelle; Syndi Whitener, Shelby; and Becky McKee, M’lynn. Info: www. bremertoncommunity theatre.org.

California who wanted to support the work of the Soroptimists. “She said it was her mother’s and she use to wear it to afternoon tea,” Howard said. Among other jewelry items are brooches and pins, everything from spirals of colored stones to butterflies to even a tiny purse pin. And there are exquisite sets of bracelets, necklaces and earrings of diamond-like stones. The inventory of shoes for the sale includes everything from a Nine West pair of taupe and white polka dot pumps with a four-inch wood heel, to a black velvet holiday shoe with a sparkling silver heel. Other shoes include some ankle boots in black suede, and a pair of Funtaisma brand red, white and black paten leather pumps with red hearts hugging the heels. “The donor said these are shoes for a professional pole dancer,” James laughed. Pricing is yet to be done, but will be based on similar items listed on eBay and elsewhere and most items are expected to be under $50. “We have an expert on standby to help with that,” Howard said. “Kerry Slone, who owns Longworth Studio in Poulsbo is going to help us with pricing.” James added, “This is not an auction, either. All items will have a price and we’re trying to make sure everything gets bought because the whole idea is to make money for our projects.” The Soroptimists use the funds they raise throughout the year to fund scholarships and support other charitable beneficiaries. And the group has provided three scholarships to women. The organization’s goal is to support women and children and work to improve their lives in the community. Every item donated has been sorted, cleaned,

tagged and awaits pricing. The committee has met at James’ house everyday sorting and placing items in individual plastic bags. The group also prepared decorative gift bags commemorating the event, and each item sold will go home in a bag with blue tissue and a ribbon. “We’ll be setting up the boutique the morning of the sale,” James said. “We’re getting together some great things to use to display the jewelry,

shoes and bags. And we’ll have lots of mirrors so everyone can see how great they look in their new jewels.” The women are excited about the response thus far to the first Baubles, Boots & Bags sale. “We had some donation locations and we put the word out but we had no idea what to expect,” James said. “The response has been heartfelt.” Donations of high-quality women’s shoes, bags, jewelry, and accessories are still being accepted and can be dropped

off at the Windermere Real Estate office, 18570 Highway 305 in Poulsbo, or by calling James at (360) 649-1008 to arrange for pick up of items.

“It’s all about buying a gift that gives to a cause,” Allen said. “It’s going to be a great event and hopefully an annual event.”

8 tips for serving wine at Thanksgiving T

hanksgiving is not far away, and a key part of a successful and festive feast is making sure the right wines are on your table. Between roasting a turkey and mashing potatoes, Thanksgiving can be a stressful meal for the host, so not having to worry about the wine will be a relief. With that in mind, here are eight wine tips for making Thanksgiving a successful event. n No. 1: Begin with bubbles. Sparkling wine is perhaps the most versatile of food wines, and fortunately for us, plenty of good bubbly is made in the Pacific Northwest. We suggest starting off your Thanksgiving feast with a celebratory toast. As a bonus, it will pair beautifully with most of the food on the table. n No. 2: Got (enough) wine? Be sure to have plenty of wine. Caterers

By ANDY PERDUE and eric degerman

will tell you to budget a half-bottle of wine per person. That might be a bit much, but a gathering of family and friends is a great time to share the wines you’ve selected for the meal. If you have several half-empty bottles by the end of the meal, it’s easy enough to put a cork in them and enjoy the next day with the rest of the leftovers. n No. 3: Think pink. Rosés are deliciously bright and bursting with fruit aromas and flavors. Dry rosés in particular pair beautifully with turkey, mashed potatoes, salads and many other dishes on the table. Avoid white Zinfandel, which is little more than California KoolAid, and stick with a dry to slightly off-dry rosé.

Ice wine grapes, in the Niagara Peninsula, Canada. Ice wine is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. Dominic Rivard / Courtesy n No. 4: Spice up life with variety. If a lot of family and friends are coming over for Thanksgiving dinner, you will have a lot of different palates around the table. Thus, try to provide many

styles of wine. For reds, consider Pinot Noir or Sangiovese, both of which are versatile food wines. For whites, Riesling or Gewürztraminer can be enjoyed by occasional wine drinkers, while

Chardonnay is America’s favorite wine and has broad appeal. n No. 5: Put the cork in the Cab. Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of wines and the wine of kings, but it probably won’t pair well with much on your Thanksgiving table. It’s often a bold and tannic wine that will be better enjoyed with beef, so save it for your Christmas roast. n No. 6: In with the new. Are you saving an older red wine for a special occasion? Keep it in your cellar for a bit longer. Older wines are often delicate, and their nuances will be lost amid the din of a Thanksgiving meal. A special older wine should be the focus of a meal that is built around it. Instead, purchase newer wines with young, fresh flavors that will make this happy meal even more joyous. n No. 7: Get bogged down. Most wine snobs

turn their noses up at fruit wines, but you’ll need to trust us on this one: cranberry wine. A few Northwest wineries make cranberry wine from fresh coastal fruit (Westport, Heymann, Cranberry Road are three in Washington). They tend to be a bit sweet, and they go amazingly well with the Thanksgiving meal. You owe it to yourself to give this a try. n No. 8: Go sweet or go home. What are you serving for dessert? Pumpkin pie? Apple pie? Regardless, your dessert wine should be sweeter than the dish or they will clash. We suggest a British Columbia ice wine, one of the great wines in the world. Can’t get to B.C. or afford $50 for a halfbottle? There are plenty of choices south of the border (Kiona and Chateau Ste. Michelle are just two). You’ll get roughly eight little pours out of a bottle, so plan accordingly. — Andy Perdue and Eric Degerman are the editors of Wine Press Northwest (www.winepressnw.com).

I

have no idea why these are called “Hello Dollies,” but growing up in Texas, it was something I just made all the time. My family strongly requested that I make them regularly. My brother’s friends would walk into the house and straight into the kitchen looking for the “Hello Dollies.” One particular friend that I call “Brother Ted” used to grab the milk carton and the tin of “Hello Dollies” and polish them off in a flash.
