Enduring Hurricane Sandy: the sirens never stopped Islander in NYC recounts the night Sandy hit By Elizabeth Celms
Special to the Reporter
I had no idea what to expect when warnings of Hurricane Sandy became more serious over the weekend of Oct. 27. Hurricane Irene, which hit New York in late August 2011, turned out to be much less destructive than expected. It struck during the middle of the night, and I completely slept through the storm. Our north Brooklyn neighborhood lost a few trees and more branches, but really it was nothing worse than the Inaugural Day Storm that hit the Seattle area in 1993. Other
Northeast regions were hit worse by Irene, but the tropical storm (as it was downgraded to) did little in comparison to Sandy, which turned New York City upside down. My boyfriend, Corey, and I, who live in a first-floor Brownstone apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, prepared for Sandy like most everyone else on our block. We were in “Evacuation Zone B,” which means we had the choice of evacuating. Of course, we were only four blocks away from the mandatory “Evacuation Zone A,” which lined the East River and Newtown Creek, but having unnecessarily shoveled out $50 to catch a cab to a friend’s house for Hurricane Irene, and another $50 back (the MTA shut down all public transport for Irene as well as Sandy), we decided to save a buck and stay. So instead
we bought provisions: jugs of water; a Maglite flashlight; plenty of food; matches; candles and a good bottle of red wine. The storm hit, as predicted, at about 8 p.m. on Monday evening. Although things had been “stormy” all day, once Sandy hit, it was clear. The sheet metal on the balcony next door began ripping too and fro (which sounds like a crashing plane for anyone who’s curious) the wind’s screaming and howling picked up, while a mess of tree branches, garbage (it is New York after all) and who-knows-what whipped around outside our kitchen window. The courtyard slowly but surely began to fill with water. We were lucky it didn’t flood our basement … or our apartment.

What began as a flight attendant’s commitment to write to one soldier on deployment has grown into an operation involving two Mercer Island schools and people across America. Robin Schmidt, known as the “Sky Angel,” was working on a Civil Reserve Air Fleet charter flight, full of soldiers, only a few months after 9/11. She passed a plaque around the plane for soldiers to sign their names so that she could pray for them on their deployment. One soldier joked, would Schmidt ‘adopt’ him while he was overseas? She then began writing

Fewer condos in Island home inventory, final prices rise Median price for S.F. homes sold in October is $866,000 By Reporter Staff
With relatively few Island homes and condos on the market or sold each month, and along with the huge variation of the types and prices of homes, identifying a reliable trend for Island real estate is always iffy. Just one very large sale or a cluster of lower priced condos on the market can skew the numbers significantly. Last month, October, is a good example. The number of condos — both offered
for sale or sold — have fallen, affecting both inventory and final prices. Just five condos were newly listed for sale last month on Mercer Island — bringing the total to 16. The 23 remaining units added to the Island inventory in October were single family homes. In all, the number of residential homes and condos were down to 94 total, down from 108 a year ago. Thirty five single family homes sales were finalized last month up from just 10 in October 2011. Yet, the October median price for single family homes that sold was $866,000 down
from $1.1 million last year. The median sale price for all homes and condos that closed during the month was $821,000, up from $550,000 for the 14 units that sold during October a year ago. The number of homes and condos whose sales were pending was up onethird from 28 just a year ago. Homes presently on the market include nine homes offered between $5 million and $8 million. The least expensive single family homes on the market include five homes priced at $500,000 or less.

White Gold
Digging British Columbia’s legendary mother lode.
Here’s how it happens: you sink into a turn and a swirl of crystals envelopes you. A curtain of cold smoke hangs in the air as you link several more explosions before pausing for a well-deserved breath. As the cloud dissipates and sound drifts off like a wind dying in the tree-tops, a weight is lifted from your life. Maybe you don’t feel it right away because the void is filled by what you see: mountains on every horizon— rugged peaks, hanging glaciers, and welcoming bowls hemmed by gentle evergreen skirts. Above you, snow-ghosts picket a ridgeline, alabaster sentinels marching into a cerulean sky. Below you is a vast expanse of unbroken white. Snow of such elemental purity it defies description. In other places it’s called champagne powder, but here, following the mining traditions of the many British Columbia towns it blankets, it’s known as White Gold—because finding it brings a fortune in fun. You’ll know that after your first run. It might be the best skiing you’ve done in a lifetime of great skiing or just a spectacular introduction to wild and free and ridiculously good. And, as you slide back onto an immaculately groomed run to head back to the
lodge, you’ll wonder this: if this is just another winter day in B.C., what’s an exceptional one? Perhaps it’s time you found out. The scope and variety of B.C.’s ski areas is staggering. Whether your choice is located in the spectacular Coast, funky Interior or jagged Rockies, the variability in resort size and ambiance, the amount and diversity of groomed and offpiste terrain, and the consistency of quality snow that ranges from 10-15 metres (30-50 feet) each winter, you’ll know you’ve struck paydirt. Like Europe, B.C.’s vast spaces and convoluted ranges mean you can stay at a world class resort or an undiscovered gem just around the corner. You’ll also find friendly people, modern lifts, lodges ranging from rustic chic to ultramodern, and fabulous, award-winning food. Best of all, getting there is simple. Vancouver & Kelowna international airports act as gateways to B.C.—you can be skiing the same day you leave home. And if the snow happens to break around your knees as you dig into that first turn on your vacation, well, you’ll know. You just struck White Gold. SKI IT TO BELIEVE IT.com

Holiday event to raise money for Parks and Rec. programs By Reporter Staff
The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department is holding a holiday concert and auction to raise money to save traditional Island community events. The “Dessert Before Dinner” event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Community and Event Center. The department is working to save events such as: Mostly Music in the Park, Summer Celebration, senior lunches, the Christmas tree lighting at Mercerdale Park, the Spring Easter Egg hunt, summertime Funtastic Fridays, Adventure Playground for children and more. Due to city budget reductions, the Parks and Recreation Department campaign to raise $25,000 for community events has begun each year. Mercer Island service organizations have stepped up to help, yet the effort has fallen short and is only halfway to its goal of
$25,000. The holiday event is planned to make up the difference. The event includes a holiday concert and silent auction. Auction items are needed; those with items for auction are asked to call 275-7609. Many businesses have already donated. They include: Acupuncture Assoc., P.S.; All the Best Pet Care; Auto Spa; Bellevue Wellness; Bryan Maruhashi, DDS; DryGuy LLC; Home Key Organization; Great Wolf Lodge; Lolliefluer; Mercer Island Dentistry; Jennifer Strelow, DMD; Mercer Park Dentistry; Mercer Island Florist; Pon Proem; Studio 904; True Value; Woodland Park Zoo; Yo Mercer and Youth Theatre Northwest. Registration is required, and tickets are $12 per person. Go to www.myparksandrecreation.com or call 275-7609 to register or learn more.

School district to appeal discrimination finding Family has filed a civil suit against the school district By Mary L. Grady
editor@mi-reporter.com
The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors voted unanimously on Nov. 8 to appeal the decision by the Office of Administrative Hearings, acting on behalf of the Washington State Superintendent’s Office, that the school district discriminated against an Islander Middle School student when it responded to his complaints of harassment and discrimination. A civil suit brought against the Mercer Island School District by the family, who said that their son was harassed by a fellow student at Islander Middle School, was dismissed by a judge in King County Superior Court on Sept. 14. The boy’s parents, Robin and Nicholas Wilt, had not given proper notice of the suit to the school district. The family has since given notice to the school district that it will re-file that complaint. On Oct. 15, a decision by Judge Michelle C. Mentzer,
of the Washington State Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH), on behalf of the state superintendent’s office, says that the school district mishandled an investigation and its aftermath regarding two incidents involving a student who has special needs. The parents of the student complained later that the district did not adequately address claims of racial slurs and related behavior involving their son, as required by state law. The judge ruled that the investigation regarding the incidents was flawed, and those flaws were sufficiently serious enough to create a hostile environment. “They used the fact that we took our [son] out of special education in a retaliatory fashion,” Robin Wilt said. Dr. Gary Plano, superintendent of the Mercer Island School District posted these comments on the school district’s website explaining the board’s position: “The Mercer Island School District is appealing a recent ruling by the OAH regarding student-on-student harassment at Islander Middle School to the King County Superior Court.
“This district has consistently implemented a zero tolerance policy against discrimination, including student-on-student harassment and bullying. “In this instance, the teachers and administrators took immediate steps to address the incident and worked closely with the family. Additionally, the school district board and I oversaw two investigations which both determined that appropriate actions had been taken to address the complaint. “The district respectfully disagrees with the ALJ’s legal and factual determinations regarding this situation and is therefore appealing. “Regardless of the initial ruling, the district has in
place a comprehensive educational program to provide a school environment free from any discrimination.” The student came to Islander Middle School in the fall of 2011 as a new student in the seventh grade. He came with an individualized learning plan from his prior school district. He is of mixed race. He spent his first week at the school in IMS’s special education program, but was later withdrawn from that program by his parents and was placed in a regular classroom. Comments from fellow students directed toward him prompted the complaint. The boy remains a student at Islander Middle School.

The money trail
H
umorist Will Rogers had it right some 90 years ago. He noted that “politics has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated.” If he could only see it now. Estimates put the cost of the recent presidential race at $2.6 billion. That means one side spent more than $1 billion only to lose. We’d hope there was a lesson there – but we doubt it. If the public were to believe the unending direct mail pieces flooding mailboxes, countless robo-phone calls, and an unconscionable number of vile “hit pieces” on television, they would conclude that the best candidate for the job should have been “none of the above.” We suspect many people were sick of the whole thing weeks before Nov. 6. The blame for a lot of this falls on the “super PACs,” collections of groups outside a politician’s direct campaign that are allowed to raise unlimited amounts of money. The situation actually is worse since many groups don’t have to register with the Federal Election Commission because they say they are focusing on “educational,” not “political” activities. We’re calling – well, you know – on that. This money-grubbing situation isn’t limited to the presidential race. The cost of political campaigns nationwide is estimated to be $6 billion. In our state alone, the race for governor is expected to reach a total cost of $46 million. Despite this national effort, many voters say they don’t expect things to change much regardless of who is elected president. We may not get the “best candidate that money can buy,” but we’re certainly going to get one who is ridiculously expensive.

There is not a “perfect” solution, as they all have individual tradeoffs. However, by continuing to engage our community, MISD will have shown to the voters that all reasonable solutions were vetted, via: i) Sharing solutions and raw data ii) Collecting broad public input iii) Making the selection criteria public. And to the extent that any voter’s favored solutions may not be chosen, this process will hopefully win their vote since the voter will have a greater appreciation for the tradeoffs and the knowledge that their individual preferred solution was fairly, publicly and professionally

Mercer Island PD Q&A By Rob Jira
Mercer Island Police Officer
Mercer Island Police Officer Rob Jira answers frequently asked questions from Mercer Island residents. What is the Mercer Island Police Department doing about all of the recent burglaries occurring on the Island? The Mercer Island Police Department is working diligently to solve burglaries and break-ins throughout the entire Island. The Mercer Island Police Department is also working in conjunction with the Bellevue Police Department on charges for multiple suspects in these cases. Some arrests have been made. The Mercer Island Police Department is aware of groups on Island and off Island that are involved or responsible for these burglaries and break-ins. We are also trying our best to educate the public on ways to deter
burglars and prowlers, and prevent citizens from becoming a victim of these crimes. Check out the City of Mercer Island’s web page (www.mercergov.org) for my monthly crime tips on how to better safeguard you and your family from becoming victims of certain crimes. If I knew something about a crime that was committed and wanted to let the police know about it, but wanted to remain anonymous, what do I do? There are a few ways you can do this. One is to call 911, or the non-emergency line (206-577-5656), and tell the dispatcher that you would like your name to remain anonymous. You can also go online to the City of Mercer Island’s website, www.mercergov.org, and submit an anonymous crime tip, or call the Mercer Island Tip Line (206-275-7955) and leave your information directly with our Investigations Unit.

Christmas decorations: glamorous or traditional?
A
s the holidays approach, our thoughts turn to decorating our homes for the festive season. Brightening up the house and adding a magical touch to social gatherings is a way to make this time of year stand out from every other occasion. To produce a striking effect that creates the mood you want, be sure to define the look you wish to create before buying or making any decorations or room accessories. Glamour There’s nothing like a metallic effect for creating a sparkling décor. Whether you opt for silver, gold, copper, or platinum for shine, the effects of reflecting light will make things look magical and will contribute to the harmony of your existing décor. Shimmering stars and metallic balls hung from doorframes are sure to put your guests in a party mood.
Whether you choose a modern holiday palette of pastels or the richly colored coziness of tradition, be sure to make your décor reflect your own ideas of comfort and style.
Thanksgiving Specials
Tired of the metallic look? How about doing pastels this year? They will give a look of softness and upscale chic to your home. Or you could try feathers and crystal, perfect for a natural yet modern look. With some inspired combinations, you can turn you home into a brilliant backdrop for an unforgettable evening.
Try our Turkey Cordon Bleu and Butternut Squash Ravioli Open on Thanksgiving Day from 11 AM to 9 PM
Traditional Christmas is also a wonderful opportunity to create a décor inspired by the olden days. The tradition of reds and greens can be resuscitated without tackiness—the secret is in avoiding a heavy hand with plastic decorations. Let yourself be inspired by holly and poinsettias, a beautiful tablecloth, and trays of flickering candles.

The perfect gift for new moms
M
Many businesses now specialize in photo products, which are a great medium for preserving the memory of a pet for posterity. For pet owners who love to have fun and who are particularly fond of jigsaw puzzles, think about an original wood puzzle featuring their pet. All you have to do is take a photograph of the pet in question to a specialized store, where it will be glued to a piece of wood, covered with a protective film, and then cut out into pieces. Or for pet owners who spend a lot of time at work, what could be better than presenting them with a calendar featuring the most beautiful photographs of their four-legged friends?
Freshly cooked or frozen meals are another wonderful idea for busy new moms, giving them precious moments with their newborn without having to worry about cooking. Or why not offer to look after the baby while she runs some errands or has a nap. Offer her a gift certificate for a romantic dinner for two at a trendy restaurant or a house cleaning service for a month, six months, or even a year. She’ll feel as if she’s staying in a hotel in the comfort of her own home!
You could also give a cute food bowl on which the name of the pet has been painted by hand. Just be sure that the bowl is made of good quality earthenware, without any lead or cadmium. In the same vein, no pet owner could resist a personalized collar bearing an engraving of their dog’s name.
Tickets for a show, the complete DVD series of her favorite TV show, a relaxing weekend at a country inn, a book about motherhood, an original piece of jewelry, a phototherapy lamp, a personalized calendar: the list of relaxing and fun gifts for a new mom is endless.
For dog owners who haven’t yet mastered their pet’s unruliness, think about offering a gift certificate for obedience classes. Look for a trainer who uses a positive approach based on dietary rewards, toys, and physical or educational activities. Be wary of trainers who advocate strategies using physical force that can harm your friend’s pet.
If you prefer to give her a little something that will ease her daily life with her baby, offer a trendy and colorful baby carrier, a bottle or food warmer, or a designer diaper bag. If you would like to give a little something that will always remind her of these first months with her bundle of joy, be original and think about a baby’s hand or footprint kit, a baby album, an embroidered towel, or plant a tree that she can watch grow with her child.

any people love to spoil their dog at Christmas, but what about his or her owner? If you’re looking for an original and personalized idea for a dog lover, here are a few ideas to sniff out for a perfect gift.
New mothers don’t always remember to take time for themselves. Now there’s a great idea: the gift of time! It might come in the form of a relaxing appointment for a facial, a box full of beauty products, a makeover at a trendy hair salon, or maybe even a luxurious day at a spa. These are all ways to encourage a new mother to think about herself a bit, especially at Christmas time.

Don’t underestimate the impact of the traditional, but still entirely touching, gesture of talking to your bride’s parents before you ask her for her hand in marriage. Of course, this is just a symbolic ritual that no longer consists in asking them for her hand. Rather, it is all about asking her family to accept you into theirs. They will most likely be honored to have the question put to them and will hopefully be inspired to welcome you with open arms.

Will she say “yes” to you under the mistletoe? marriage proposal is one of the most emotional moments in anyone’s life, but the hectic pace of today’s world leaves little room for creativity. And yet, if there is one occasion that should be unforgettable, it has to be your marriage proposal. Christmas, another occasion that celebrates love, may just be the perfect time to take the plunge.
Christmas is the ideal moment for a marriage proposal, no matter how you plan to pop the question. favorite flowers. All you have to do is find a few heartfelt words to soften the heart of your beloved.
hristmas is the perfect occasion to show a little gallantry, when everyone is dressed up in their very best for all the glittering parties and romantic dates. But gallantry? “What’s that?” you may ask. Far from being the special domain of royalty and dignitaries, gallantry is making a big comeback, right here at home. Essentially, it can be defined as the courtesy men show women through chivalrous attention. So, now is the time for all you men out there to take notes on how to be the perfect gentleman; the love of your life will glow with happiness! • •
The important thing to remember is to speak from the heart. Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerability and sensitivity as you tell her why you hope she’ll choose to spend the rest of her life with you. When she says “yes,” slip the ring onto her finger — the left ring finger, don’t forget! — and give her a passionate kiss to round off this beautiful testimony of your love.

Christmas is the ideal moment for a marriage proposal, no matter how you plan to pop the question. Not only is happiness the most beautiful of gifts, but the presence of friends and family over the Christmas holidays will add a touch of magic to the event.

Carry the heaviest cases when traveling. When going down a flight of stairs, go in front of her so you can catch her in the event of a stumble. When climbing stairs, go ahead of her so as not to embarrass her by following too closely. Pull her chair back slightly in restaurants as an invitation for her to sit down. Ideally, you should also wait for her to be seated before you sit down. Compliment her, especially about what she is wearing or how elegant she looks. Of course, your comments should always be respectful and never out of place.
If some of these practices make her feel confined to an inferior role, respect her experience and offer a chivalrous gesture that leaves room for her to say “no.” Nevertheless, assure her that these good manners aim above all to help you win her over. Four straight state titles Water polo fourth at state By Carol Lewis Gullstad Special to the Reporter

The Mercer Island girls swim and dive team celebrates its fourth straight 3A state victory on the podium on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the King County Aquatic Center. By Megan Managan

Since the Mercer Island High School girls swimming seniors were freshmen, they have been state champions. This year was no different, as the Islanders captured the team’s fourth straight 3A state title on Saturday night at the King County Aquatic Center. Mercer Island finished with a team score of 376, with Bainbridge in second place with 303 points. The 200 freestyle relay team set a new state record, winning the event in 1:37.12, breaking the record set by
Juanita in 2009. The team of Alex Seidel, Christina Williamson, Sabrina Kwan and Grace Wold didn’t even realize they set a state record after the event, according to head coach Chauntelle Johnson. “I’d like to say that it was unexpected, but I wasn’t paying attention to the record until yesterday — then I saw it, looked at our splits and thought that was one we can get,” said Johnson. “They didn’t even know that they had broken it. They thought they broke a school record and were excited about that. But when they came over
and saw me freaking out and were like, oh, OK — but no you not only broke a school record, which at Mercer Island is very impressive, but they broke the state record.” Freshman Kwan, a member of all of the relay teams, won the state title in the 100 butterfly race, earning a 55.85 time. Her time was good enough to become an All-American consideration. “I thought she did fantastic. She did what I expected her to. I’d seen great racing out of her all year; today she raced extremely well, not just in her two individual events, but as part of that state record-breaking relay and was also part of that medley relay. That doesn’t surprise me,” said the coach. The Islanders’ 200 medley

Mercer Island’s drive to win a state water polo championship ended on the final day of the state tournament, after the Islanders lost to Curtis in the state semifinals. The team would go on to finish fourth overall. The team entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, but fell to Curtis 11-7 in the semifinals. The Islanders were caught flat-footed as the Vikings jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first half, scoring three in each quarter. The Islanders were shooting, but Curtis’ All-State senior goalie, Griffin Collins, proved formidable, blocking four shots in the first quarter and six in the second, while Curtis continued to score. With 3:15 remaining, the Vikings’ lead had built to 9-1 and the Islanders’ dream was fading. But, the Islanders rallied and began to connect with the net, closing the gap to within four goals, down 10-6 at the
end of the third. Islander goalie Matt LeProwse was able to steal the ball in the opening seconds of the fourth, leading to a goal by Sam Peterson. The momentum dramatically shifted and all of a sudden it looked like the impossible

Islander volleyball seventh at state By Megan Managan

After falling in their first match at the 3A state tournament Friday morning, the Mercer Island volleyball team bounced back, winning three straight matches to finish seventh overall in the state tournament. In the first match to the 3A state tournament, Mercer Island lost 3-2 to Prairie. “I was pretty shocked when I saw the brackets,” said head coach Susan McKay of facing eventual state champions Prairie in the first round. “The team played really hard, and we staged one of the more amazing comebacks.” The Falcons earned a 2-0 lead in the match, winning first two games 25-19 othe overWorshi Mercer Island, but the
Islanders battled back from a 19-10 deficit in game three to win it 25-22 and force another game. In game four, the Islanders held on to win 25-23, but were dominated 15-3 in the fifth game to fall to Prairie. “We definitely talked a lot about life lessons and how it’s easy to play when you’re winning, but it’s harder when you’ve lost, and I thought how they responded was a great testament to the team. We talked about how to find the good in something disappointing.” Moving into the consolation bracket, Mercer Island beat Stanwood, 3-1, Friday afternoon in 20-25, 25-22, 25-13 and 25-14 games. The Islanders moved on to play Lakeside of Seattle on Saturday morning, winning

3-0. The final scores were 25-10, 25-17 and 25-13 for the Islanders. In the final game of the 2012 season, Mercer Island beat Seattle Prep 3-0 in 25-14, 25-21 and 25-23 games. “If we get stuck on ending up seventh when we wanted to be first, it takes away from the season we had,” said the coach. “Overall, it was an incredible season; we beat Mount Si four times, won KingCo and districts for the first time in four years. As a team, they played so well and worked so hard.” The team was undefeated throughout league play, winning its first regular season KingCo and district titles since 2008. The Islanders finished with a 24-1 overall record.

Girls soccer season ends in first round of state By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
The Mercer Island girls soccer team’s trip to the state tournament ended on Tuesday evening, after losing to Kamiakin. The Islanders traveled to Kennewick to play their first state game, falling 1-0. “They were rated No. 3 in state and we were ranked No. 8, so we knew it would be a tough game,” said Islanders head coach Terry Ryan. “Early on we dominated and had at least two great
State | FROM 16 could occur as the Islanders were down 10-7 with 6:30 remaining in the fourth. Curtis, though, proved stubborn and used the clock to their advantage to grind out the minutes. The Islanders were able to get off six shots in the four but two barred out and three were blocked, leading to a final score of 11-7, with Mercer Island coming up short.

chances, but unfortunately we missed those. We stayed on them, but after a lull for about 30 minutes in the first half, a Kamiakin player was dribbling in the box, heading out of the box, and was tripped up and she got a penalty kick.” Kamiakin made the penalty kick, scoring the game’s only goal for the 1-0 lead. “We went after it, after that,” said Ryan. “We had lots of opportunities, but couldn’t get there. Our defense played spectacularly. Kamiakin has an outstanding forward, but
they shut her down. They didn’t have one shot on frame and that’s pretty amazing.” Despite closes chances in the rest of the game, Mercer Island couldn’t find the back of the net. “The girls played fantastic — it’s really a shame to lose on a call like that,” said Ryan. “I’m very proud of the girls. They definitely outplayed Kamiakin. Now we know what we need to do in the future to get better.” The Islanders finished the season with a 14-4-2 record overall.
The Islanders’ path to the semis included a 26-6 win over Bainbridge, 11-4 final score against Puyallup and beating Auburn-Riverside 14-10. The Islanders ended the tournament with a loss to Newport in the 3rd/4th place playoff game, 9-8. The Islanders had beaten the Knights in their two previous regular season games. In addition to the fourthplace finish, three Islanders were named to the All-State teams. Sam Peterson earned
first team honors, while David Rudokas was named to the second team and Connor Gullstad earned honorable mention. “I am really proud of the way these guys came together as a team,” said head coach Erik Grosshans of the season. “They had the desire and work ethic and team play. They became a defensive powerhouse. They showed themselves worthy of a topfour finish at state.”
relay team finished in second place to start the meet on Saturday afternoon. Caitlin Cox, Leah Fisk, Kwan and Williamson swam to a 1:48.45 final time. Bainbridge won the event in 1:47.75. Cox finished fourth in the 200 freestyle race, earning a 1:56.60 time, followed by Seidel in fifth place in 1:55.48. Bellevue sophomore Kim Williams beat out Wold in the 200 individual medley race. Wold finished with a 2:01.87 time, while Williams hit the pad with 2:01.20 on the clock. Danielle Dieparine earned the seventh place finish in the event. Kwan took fourth in the 50 freestyle sprints, while Seidel was sixth in the 100 freestyle event in 53.55. Kristin Hoffman finished seventh overall in the event. Mercer Island senior Meg Lindsay finished in second place in the 1 meter diving competition, earning 392.85 points as a final score. She led the field going into the final three dives, but missed

Wold finished in fourth place in the 100 butterfly event, a race she won the year before. Wold’s final time was 56.45, an All-American consideration time. Fisk finished in sixth place in the 500 freestyle race, finishing with a 5:13.99 time. Bainbridge’s Sarah Grundman defended her title from 2011 by winning the event in 4:58.40. In the 100 backstroke race, Cox finished in fifth place overall, finishing with a 58.04 time. Dieparine was also sixth in the 100 breast stroke event, and finished with 1:08.36 on the clock, while Fisk was seventh in 1:08.71. The Islanders’ 400 relay team won the state title in the final event of the meet, when Hoffman, Seidel, Cox and Wold swam to a 3:33.41 All-American consideration time.
After the meet, Johnson said she was proud of the team, knowing this is what they have worked for. She added that the seniors felt especially excited, realizing how rare it can be to win four straight state titles. “I think that for them it’s bigger than just this year,” said Johnson of the seniors. “As seniors they’ve won state championships all four years, and that’s a pretty phenomenal thing to do. I don’t know many kids in other sports who can say for four years they’ve done that. I know our boys team has done that and some other teams at Mercer Island have done that, but it’s still a pretty elite group to be among. I think they realize how special it is. They are crying tears of happiness over here, not because they pulled out one they didn’t think they could win, but because it’s the end for a lot of these girls.” Johnson was named the coach of the year at the meet.

Sandy | FROM 1
block, and as I took my spot in line, a B62 bus flew by packed like a can of sardines. Didn’t even stop. The next bus did the same. Realizing I had next to no chance of catching a bus within the hour, I decided to walk. Although I didn’t exactly know the way to Manhattan, all I had to do was follow the pilgrimage of others ahead. Over the Pulaski Bridge, nearly two miles to the Queensboro Bridge, and over the pedestrian path until I finally got to a running train in Manhattan. The trip home was just the same, except the bus lines were even longer. Yet New Yorkers pulled together. People were lending open hands, putting their heads together to find a solution. When Mayer Mike Bloomberg mandated that cars with less than three pas-
sengers would not be allowed into Manhattan, neighbors called each other to carpool, and drivers pulled over at crowded bus stops offering rides. Food trucks and shops with power in Manhattan set up free “charging stations” for pedestrians to charge their cell phones. Pizzerias passed out free slices, and diners offered free coffee for residents to warm up. And then there was the overwhelming response from volunteers. Corey and I signed up to volunteer at the Hunter College shelter on Saturday, helping prepare cots for those displaced by the storm. Only 10 minutes after we arrived, volunteers started being turned away. But they kept coming. A woman stopped by who spoke Spanish, asking if anyone needed a translator. A retired psychologist inquired
if anyone needed counseling or support. Teens, adults and seniors filtered in hour after hour, asking if there was anything they could do. The efforts are still ongoing. Sure, there was chaos, people lost their tempers, complained and even acted out. But, in the end, the true character of New York was captured in the thousands of individuals offering a helping hand. I thought back to similar efforts on Mercer Island, and I realized: you don’t have to live in a small town to feel a sense of community. And New York began to feel a little more like home. The message on the window covered by plywood in New York City, shows the general distress brought on by Hurricane Sandy.

But despite all this cacophony, the most unsettling sounds were the emergency response sirens. They first began around 8 p.m. and then continued through the night. I don’t know if they were ambulance sirens or fire trucks — probably both, but you could hear them all night long. Those sirens were what had me worried. It was those sirens that I fell asleep to, having no idea what I’d wake up to. What I did wake up to was absolute silence. “Maybe we’re in the eye of the storm,” I thought to myself. No. Silence is apparently what New York sounds like when there’s absolutely nobody going to work; no garbage trucks clanging by; no street vendors opening their metal doors; and no disgruntled cabbies honking at cyclists. Silence is what 8 a.m. sounds like after Hurricane Sandy has hit. We were very, very lucky. Although Newtown Creek flooded the art studios, metalworking shops and apartments that banked it (causing thousands of dollars in damage), our block was left dry. Things looked worse during those memorable windstorms we weathered on Mercer Island. Other areas of New York weren’t so lucky. It took a few days for the storm to “sink in.” Nobody could really go anywhere, so Corey and I just met with friends at a local café to buzz over the storm and swap stories. I’d never seen so many people not go to Manhattan in my life. Of course, nobody could go because the bridges were still closed, the MTA subways and buses were still shut down and the East River ferry system was a clear “no.” It took a day or two for the reality of Sandy to sink in. Corey and I were pretty much glued to our laptop screens, unable to believe the images we were seeing: Lower Manhattan totally in the dark; entire shorelines demolished; subways submerged under water; cars piling on top of one another, creating a BMW/Honda/Subaru dam; and thousands of people in shelters or displaced by the storm. It was truly sobering. On Thursday, I told my editor I could make it into Manhattan to go over content for the week. Most MTA buses were now running and a handful of Manhattan subways were working. Expecting long lines, I thought I’d get ahead of the crowd and leave home two hours early (it usually takes me 30 minutes to get into the city). I couldn’t have been more wrong. The bus line snaked around the

It’s All About
SERVICE
Fast. Professional. Friendly.
Providing Complete Plumbing & Heating Services in King County Since 1964 you offer any products that could help my water supply be more efficient, Q “Do or save me money?” :
Q/A | with David Brown – Owner, Fox Plumbing & Heating
Q
“How did Fox Plumbing & Heating get started?” :
A
: Virgil Fox started the company in 1964; even as a young man, I loved “hands on work” and was proud to be a tradesman. I joined the company in 1973 and thrived in the environment of high standards and hard work. By 1979 I was half owner of the company, purchasing it in its entirety in 1983. I was dedicated to the value of quality service at a fair price and understood the importance of keeping every customer, since then I’ve expanded but maintained our deep commitment to integrity and quality work. Our customers tell us time and time again that we are the most trustworthy plumbing service in King County.
plumbing services do you offer? And do you do both repair and installaQ “What tion?” :
A
: If it has to do with pipes and water, we have the skilled workforce to both fix ailing systems and install new systems. We work in old and new homes as well as in businesses and commercial environments – we are experts in fixing old systems. We’re not always looking to sell people something new; if it can be fixed we fix it. We offer a full range of plumbing services from sewers to hot water tanks. We help our customers save money by offering plumbing system tune-ups, which are continually growing in popularity because they save people on the cost of repairs by catching problems early. We’re very excited to announce that we have expanded and now service and install all types of heating, furnaces and air conditioning, too. We are committed to our customers and to our staff, provid-
A
ing on-going training to make sure our technicians are simply the best trained in the business.
Q “Do you guarantee your services?” A :
: Absolutely, we have the best written warranties in the business. We provide our customers with the right price for the service and then guarantee the work. We have received the best service award from Angie’s list for over 6 years and are always top rated. Our customers will tell you about their experience with Fox Plumbing and Heating and we encourage them to do so. 80% of our new business comes from current customer referrals, we’re proud of this record and intend to continue it, every customer is important to us, I’ve built this whole business around satisfied customers, when we say “it’s all about service”, we mean it.
: First having equipment in good working order saves water and money, you wouldn’t believe how costly a dripping faucet or “ever-running toilet” can be, I’ve seen them cost home owners and businesses hundreds even thousands of dollars. In this day and age switching from a gas water tank to tankless system saves space, energy and delivers endless hot water. PSE even provides rebates. Converting from electric to gas can save thousands of dollars over time. It’s important to know what works for your life-style and budget and what are your energy saving goals. The benefits of a tankless system are; endless hot water, its green – smaller carbon footprint, space savings, and energy savings. It took me a while to be totally sold on the tankless hot water systems, but I am, today the technology is outstanding.
an emergency, what’s the best thing to do? What about afterhours and on Q “In the weekends?” :
A
: Call us 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Pipes, sewers, water heaters, toilets, sinks and furnaces can’t tell time and often chose the worst time to act up and break down. We get this and have experts available to assist you whenever you need it, at your home or business. We have dispatchers and technicians on call 24 hours per day. On our website we have emergency water shut off videos to help people in times of emergency. It’s understandable that most people don’t even think of their plumbing until something goes wrong, we often get our best customers through our response to an emergency, we’re there and we fix the problem. After an emergency many of our customers participate in our $99 annual Plumbing Tune-up program, which saves them hundreds even thousands of dollars in the long run and they are seeing great improvements in their plumbing systems.
James arrived within 3 hours of my call for service. He quickly determined the problem and did a work around to get me back online. Then the next day at the exact appointment time he replaced the tank. Prompt, Professional, Clean & Neat. Good equipment and a reasonable price. Best service contractor I have used in 30 years. - Tom Nesbit, Kirkland.
