hile thousands of same-sex couples in Washington are planning their lavish wedding days – some as soon as Dec. 9 – Shaun Kelly and his partner are in no hurry. “I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to be very busy in the gay community. I don’t think there’s going to be a free weekend on the gay calendar for at least a year,” said Kelly on the passage of Washington’s Referendum 74. “Everybody is just going

to buy bulk amounts of toasters and wedding gifts. It’s something that I really want but I don’t want to think about it too much until it happens.” In fact, for Kelly and his partner, Chris McDaniel, R-74 goes far beyond weddings and even marriage. It’s about children – and being accepted. “You don’t go down on bent knees and ask somebody to be in a civil union,” said Kelly, 44, who campaigne d for R-74. “It just makes a big difference in what people are allowed to do and how it makes

people feel more accepted in the community. That’s the biggest part of it for me, is just acceptance and the ability to be seen as being a regular person.” He added that the measure will also allow children of gay couples and gay children themselves to feel accepted. R-74 asked people to approve or reject a state law legalizing same-sex marriage that legislators passed earlier this year. Gov. A man residing at Tent City 4 in Kirkland was charged Nov. 8 with raping a child in Tacoma before he moved to the homeless encampment at St. John Mary Vianney Catholic Church in October. Robert Bruce McKayErskine, 35, was charged with three counts of first-degree child rape and two counts of first-degree child molestation on Nov. 8 in Pierce County Superior Court. Tacoma police arrested the man at the Kirkland church on Nov. 7 and his bail was set at $100,000 . In response to the arrest, church officials sent out a letter to the church community on Nov. 8, notifying people of the incident. “I want to assure you that the accused, like all residents, was subjected to a thorough background and a sexualoffender check prior to being granted residence at Tent City,” said church Pastor Ramon Santa Cruz in the letter, noting the background checks came up clear. The criminal charges were filed on Oct. 26, nearly two weeks after McKay-Erskine became a Tent City resident. Tacoma police responded to the sexual abuse claims on Oct. 11, two days before Tent City moved to Kirkland. Two men were charged with first-degree robbery Wednesday for taking money from a Finn Hill Key Bank last Friday. Brian Ward Espelund, 41, of Everett was given a $1 million bail and his alleged accomplice, Michael Joseph Rogers, Jr., 47, from Kirkland faces a $100,000 bail. Both are being held in King County jail. Espelund allegedly walked into Key Bank on Nov. 2 and handed the teller a note, demanding money. About

$5,480 was picked up, according to charging documents. Espelund allegedly directed the teller to exclude any dye packs or trackers in the money. Court documents indicate the suspect was wearing a disguise comprised of a blonde wig, black Seahawks baseball hat and black track suit. Witnesses say a man wearing a wig proceeded to run north toward an apartment complex after exiting the bank. Kirkland police arrived at the scene. A witness said Espelund supposedly got into

a turquoise-green Dodge pick-up truck with silver on the bottom, which then drove quickly away, and was headed north on Juanita Drive N.E. King County charging documents indicate Rogers was the driver of the vehicle. An officer drove down Juanita Drive and stopped when he noticed the vehicle matching the description. But the truck took off as soon as the officer put on his lights. After failure to yield, speeding and other traffic violations ensued, the truck stopped in the parking lot of the Manhatten Express

grocery store. Rogers and a 29-year-old woman who has not been charged, were arrested. Police found Espelund hiding in the cab of the truck. An officer at the scene observed dark clothing and a “crisp” $50 bill lying on the floorboards of the truck, according to documents. The bank teller was brought to the scene and positively identified Espelund as the robber. The witness also positively identified the vehicle as the truck he saw fleeing the scene. Although officers

informed Espelund of his Miranda rights twice, he told officers he thought it would be a good idea to rob the bank on a Friday after people had deposited their paychecks, the documents continue. The woman involved said she was dropped off by the men at a supermarket before the crime and then picked up again about 10 to 15 minutes after. She claimed there was no conversation of the robbery until the arrests were made. The two men had slightly different stories on the

Kirkland schools went into lockdown Friday after Kirkland police informed school officials that two suspects of a stolen vehicle were loose. Thoreau Elementary sent out an email at approximately 2:30 p.m. notifying families of the lockdown. The email said at 11:40 a.m. the school received a call from police telling them to keep students inside because they were in pursuit of “three suspects.” The school responded by

locking all doors, windows and closing blinds. Lt. Mike Murray said police did inform the schools located around the 9000 block of N.E. 132nd St. of the pursuit but, he says, they did not advise them to hold a lockdown. Kathryn Reith, communications director of the Lake Washington School District, confirmed Finn Hill Middle School also held a modified lockdown. According to Murray, police followed the white SUV until a male and female

got out and ran north toward a wooded area. It is unknown if the two suspects were armed, but Murray said police had no reason to believe they were. Five or six police units responded and were on scene for about 45 minutes. A few officers stayed to search through the woods, but no arrests were made, Murray said. “Unfortunately a lot of people leave valuables in their cars and prowlers see them, break in and steal,” Murray said.

Shameful costs of our elections

umorist Will Rogers once noted that “politics has become so expensive that it takes a lot of money even to be defeated.” If he could only see it now. Estimates put the cost of the recent presidential race at $2.6 billion. That means one side spent more than $1 billion only to lose. We’d hope there was a lesson there – but we doubt it. If the public were to believe the unending direct mail pieces flooding mailboxes, countless robo-phone calls, and an unconscionable number of vile “hit pieces” on television, they would conclude that the best candidate for the job should have been “none of the above.” We suspect many people were sick of the whole thing weeks before Nov. 6. The blame for a lot of this falls on the “super PACs,” collections of groups outside a politician’s direct campaign that are allowed to raise unlimited amounts of money. The situation actually is worse since many groups don’t have to register with the Federal Election Commission because they say they are focusing on “educational,” not “political” activities. We’re calling – well, you know – on that. This money-grubbing situation isn’t limited to the presidential race. The cost of political campaigns nationwide is estimated to be $6 billion. In our state alone, the race for governor is expected to reach a total cost of $46 million. Despite this national effort, many voters say they don’t expect things to change much regardless of who is elected president. We may not get the “best candidate that money can buy,” but we’re certainly going to get one who is ridiculously expensive.

Kudos to City of Kirkland for citizen-led initiative Kirkland voters approved Propostion 1 and 2 just two

weeks ago after much controversy among home owners. Prop. 1 will provide funds for street resurfacing, pothole repairs, sidewalk and crosswalk improvement through an ongoing tax levy of 20.4 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. Homeowners with a home valued at $346,000 would pay an annual estimated cost of $70.78. Prop. 2 is for the upkeep of Kirkland parks and the continuation of lifeguard services around Kirkland beaches. This tax levy calls for 16 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The permanent levy will tax an annual $55.36 for homes valued at the same median assessed valuation. Both propositions equate to $11 in taxes per month for homeowners. And although many wrote to the Reporter expressing concerns on the measures, the Kirkland City Council ensured these propositions were open for public vote. The council also asked the community for their

involvement. The council appointed a group of citizens in September 2011 called the Park Funding Exploratory Committee. The city asked the group to consider and make recommendations regarding funding to help meet the capital, maintenance, and operational needs of the city’s park, open space and recreation system. The committee was comprised of nearly 50 citizens representing a broad array of key community stakeholders. After gathering information about goals and needs for Kirkland parks, the group recommended Propositions 1 and 2. Councilwoman Amy Walen said this was the community’s campaign all the way along. The city will also start working on the groups’ goals right away. Kudos to the council for also making these citizen-led initiatives.

Fawn stolen from lawn I am 97 years old and I live with my daughter and son-in-law. My son-in-law spent 20 years in the service defending our country. I looked out my kitchen window yesterday morning and someone had stolen the small cement deer fawn. The fawn had been give me as a birthday gift several years ago. We had three cement deer in our front yard, a buck, a doe and the small fawn. The fawn is now gone from our front yard. The fawn was removed from our front yard during the early hours of the morning. Through the years, we used the three deer in our front yard to direct persons not familiar with our area to our home. We also had many families walking by with children who would come into our yard for the children to see and even pet the deer even though they were cement. I really would like for the

fawn to be returned. We love our country but we also have only pity for thieves like this. We have been citizens of Kirkland for many years.

Everything is going to be so fabulous for our little ones and our shoppers. Here are the details. Anyone over 14 years of age is invited to help decorate downtown Kirkland on Saturday, Nov. 17. The group will meet for coffee and pastries at 8:30 a.m. in the main lobby at Merrill Gardens, 201 Kirkland Ave. At 9 a.m. we will go out to decorate in groups of three-tofour. Around noon we will be

nourished at Merrill Gardens with pasta from George’s and there will also be pizza and salad too. Bring: pliers, cutters, gloves, extension ladders, medium ladder, 1 large “A” frame ladder, gloves, warm clothing and for those of you with sensitive ears don’t forget the ear muffs. We need 130 volunteers. On behalf of everyone in the Kirkland Downtown Association, let me say thank you in advance for always coming through. Kirkland has the very best citizens ever and I always get a little teary eyed when I think about how you always come through.

Good luck getting council to acknowledge traffic mess I wish the writer well in his efforts to address the parking problem, a problem created by the Kirkland City Council. Their

underlying reason for approving congestion is to force people to use mass transit, which on the Eastside means buses. The city is required to have a traffic engineer, so they hired one. It wasn’t long before they changed his title from traffic engineer to transportation engineer just to push for mass transit. In doing so, his title should be congestion engineer, one that is not promoting the necessary traffic improvements required to support mass transit. When those people get off the bus, they hit the road in their cars adding to the congestion we already have. So good luck on getting the council to acknowledge our parking problem, our traffic jams and enforcement of the concurrency provision of the Growth Management Act. They are not doing their jobs and are reducing the quality of life of those who live here.

Washington state voters approved gay marriage during the general election, joining Maine and Maryland as the first states to pass same-sex marriage by popular vote. Six other states — New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont — and the District of Columbia already allowed gay marriage, but those states’ laws were enacted either by lawmakers or court rulings. Same-sex couples in Washington can apply for marriage licenses as early as Dec. 6 and can use those licenses starting Dec. 9. Kelly and McDaniel, who live in Kirkland’s North Juanita neighborhood with their two 11-year-old sons, met on an online dating site more than two years ago. McDaniel said when he met Kelly and they discovered that they had sons the same age, it was like “winning the lottery.” Shaun, who is currently still married to his wife, realized he was gay late in life. He came out in 2009 and met Chris about a year later when he was separated from his wife. “One of the biggest things is I’ve never been hated before,” said Kelly, noting his son took the transition very well. “I’ve always been a pretty well liked person and all of a sudden I’m hated by a huge portion of the country and to some degree the world. That was a real eye opener for me.” This caused Kelly to put his divorce on hold and get involved with the R-74 campaign, volunteering several hours each week to call mostly undecided voters. The England native also focused on getting his citizenship – which he

During his campaigning, Kelly says he made several calls to voters who opposed R-74. He said some calls were “nasty,” including one call where someone told him: “I will find your mother and I will slit her throat in her sleep,” Kelly recalled. “But then I did have some people who were against it but weren’t mean. They just have this fixed notion in their head that the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin and that sinners should not be allowed to do what they want to do and don’t have equal rights.” He said that the campaign has also seen support from the religious community. He and McDaniel felt this support when they pulled their boys out of school in January and went to Olympia when Gregoire signed the initial same-sex marriage bill. “It was awesome – it was just people supporting each other,” said Kelly. “They were not expecting to get anywhere near as many people as they got there. They’d never seen that much of a turn out for a bill signing before.” McDaniel, age 42, said when voters approved R-74 two weeks ago, he

was amazed and didn’t expect it would happen in his lifetime. “There’s so many things that I can tell you that have been a continual slap in the face. I didn’t choose this lifestyle,” said McDaniel, who came out when he was 17. For example, after he bought his first house, he decided to add his former partner to the title and he had to pay an excise tax. “It was just such a slap to have to pay this extra $2,300 that my neighbor wouldn’t have had to pay,” he said. “These are the kinds of things that people don’t think about. There’s something like 2,000 benefits that automatically come from saying the words ‘I’m married.’” He said the new measure makes him feel valued. “This is such a gay reference, but I have to add I feel like Sally Field when she won the Oscar and she was like, ‘you liked me, you guys really, really liked me!’ It was a true validation by my peers, it was so overwhelming – I’m emotional now just thinking about it,” said McDaniel. Of course, the couple has also thought about their wedding day, which will come – some day. Kelly says he envisions a small wedding ceremony

The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) and the parties responsible for the Site entered into a legal agreement called Prospective Purchaser Consent Decree in 2000. Juanita Village Site is located west of 98th Ave NE & north of Juanita Drive, Kirkland WA. The Site was a former strip mall with two former gas stations and former dry cleaning facilities that left contamination. For those who feel groggy, irritable and not quite “there” in the morning, the owners of Java Zombie say they have the cure. “If you’re an avid coffee drinker and you go to wherever you normally go (in the morning), and you don’t have your coffee, you feel like a zombie,” said coowner David Frisbie. “We have the cure. We really believe that because that’s how most of us feel when we don’t have our coffee.” And more than half of all Americans can attest to that. Nearly 60 percent of U.S. coffee drinkers claim they need a cup of coffee to start their day, according to statisticbrain.com. But Java Zombie owners

did research before opening their cafe in Kirkland’s Totem Lake neighborhood Oct. 18 so they could serve patrons the best “cure” available. Local Vivace Espresso provides the best crema, which is “butter” of espresso, according to coowner Shanelle Allen. “It’s a creamy velvety layer of texture that sits on top of the espresso,” said Allen. “It’s got that beautiful smell, that aroma that brings you in. We have coffee that you’ll want to just drink as straight espresso.” Aside from the coffee, Java Zombie also provides the right kind of fuel. “The food is savory. The chipotle chicken, if you like spice, is probably one of the best things you’ll ever have. It’s my favorite, it’s his favorite,” said Allen as she pointed to Frisbie. The cafe uses Boar’s Head meat and cheese with local bread that comes from Essential Baking Company. Their cilantro pesto and Italian pesto sauces are custom-made by Allen. “I love to cook, I love to

feed people,” she said. “It’s part of my culture and to be able to make my recipes and build them into something to deliver to people, it’s amazing.” The most satisfying part for Frisbie and Allen, who are married, is seeing people enjoy their work, and most importantly their product. But getting to where they are was a struggle, as it is for most small businesses. “This was probably one of the hardest experiences I think all three of us had ever been through,” Allen said. “None of us had any experience in remodeling a restaurant. We learned a lot along the way.” It took nearly eight months, $120,000, blood, sweat and some tears to remodel the retail space at 12093 124th Ave. N.E. Even though it was stressful, it was “one of the most rewarding feelings” to have their work completed, they say. And Frisbie said the stress hasn’t deterred them from future expansion at all.

Betker said it’s important for children to learn about donating because it provides a new experience. But Betker adds that it’s especially important to consider giving to others in need during the winter season. “The holiday season is always a difficult time for our families,” Betker said. “The season itself puts added pressure to celebrate and have special meals, which is a tough thing to do.” During the field trip, Evergreen Academy’s principal Dana Mott saw that Hopelink also takes books. So, she rounded up 1,210 books from the school’s library and donated them, too. As a result of the recent donations, Hopelink is now looking to form a partnership with the school. Evergreen Academy has organized food drives, “Adopt a Family,” coat drives and more through their Organization of Parents and Teachers program. Athletes on the Lake Washington girls swim team, along with head coach Dave Hale, couldn’t help it. The emotion was overwhelming. But the tears were not of sorrow or even pain, they were of elation and exhilaration after winning the 2A Washington State 2A swim championship Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The Kangs scored 235 team-points to edge Tumwater (205) and 36 other high school teams during the final standings. This is also the first year that Lake Washing-

ton has competed at the 2A level. But the tears were more than justified. The Kangs pulled off a monumental and rare team effort by winning the state trophy with no individual first-place finishes and being loaded with underclassmen. Depth was the key to the Lake Washington title, placing two or more swimmers in the top 16 of state during three separate events. The first of those events came during the 50-yard freestyle, as Clare KucinskiMurphy led the way for the Kangs in second place with a time of 25.15 seconds. Kang Jessi McKinney finished

seventh overall (25.81), while freshman teammate Hannah Walker finished 11th (26.43). Kucinski-Murphy, who is just a sophomore herself, made a statement during the meet. She also took second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.99. Teammate and freshman Gabriel Rector followed just behind in fifth place, with a time of 1:01.81 during the finals of the same event. One of the biggest strengths of the Kang team came from its diving squad with three athletes placing in the top 16. As a team, the Lake Washington divers dominated by scoring 117team points, 42 points ahead

of second place Sumner. Individually, freshman Nadia Popovici finished second in state with a score of 304.60. Teammate Shay Sarda finished fourth overall (294.95), while Amara Cairns finished 13th (222.80). The Kangs’ relays also supplied a plethora of team points and high finishes. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Laura Chopp, Kucinski-Murphy, McKinney and Jayna VanStone finished second overall with a time of 3:46.26. The 200-yard medley relay team took third, as Rector, McKinney, VanStone and Kucinski-Murphy stood on the podium after touching

The Juanita Junior Rebels Varsity football team defeated Bothell 56-52 to win the Greater Eastside Junior Football Association championship on Saturday at Pop Keeney Field. The team went 8-1 on the season and defeated Woodinville in the quarter finals and Bellevue in the semi finals to advance to the championship game. The Junior Rebels are led by head coach Randy McWilliams and assistant coaches Evan Hopkins, Jared Mell, Tim Peacock, Rob Sise, and John Martin.
