city’s ambulance transport fee. The figures in the table represent the impact of these tax changes on an Island homeowner with a home with an average assessed value of $700,000. Property taxes will increase by just under $70 for the average homeowner next year and an additional 7 percent, or about $10 more, in 2014. Besides the newly approved taxes for the fire station and rescue truck, the 1 percent increases are a direct effect of lower tax revenues and higher costs, Corder said. City financial planners had grappled with lower real estate excise taxes revenues than they expected this year, particularly from the sales of higher-end homes. Up until August, no homes had sold for greater than $5 million this year, leaving the city worried for future years. The number of sales did pick up, however, in the late summer, with one home per month selling at $5 million or more since August. Eyeing this trend, the city and the Council have been actively looking at ways to reduce expenses for some time. According to the city finance director, Chip Corder, the aim was to make up any shortfall with 50 percent new revenue sources and 50 percent from reducing costs. “It ended up that we reduced expenses further than the 50 percent we planned for,” he said. “We have already cut $4 million over the past four and a half years,” he added.

Islander students empower girls at Kenyan school By Arianna Moscatel and Mary Margaret Welch Special to the Reporter

In their freshman year, Caroline Dillon, Sara Lindquist, Arianna Moscatel, Ellie Frank and Riley MacAulay started a science club called PETRI (Philanthropy, Education, Teaching, Research and Involvement) to encourage interest in science at MIHS. The “P” spoke to the girls and Moscatel, Dillon and Lindquist decided to act on the philanthropy part of the mission. They wanted to provide scholarships to girls their age in a developing country. Their faculty sponsor is Mary Margaret Welch, a former MIHS teacher and founder of a nonprofit organization called SEAVURIA. SEAVURIA partners

students and teachers in rural Kenya with Seattlearea students and teachers to study issues of global importance together. They use the lens of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to engage students who are mentored by local global health scientists to share data and share perspectives. When PETRI heard about the K e n y a n s c h o o l s involved in SEAVURIA, they decided to collaborate to help them find girls in need of scholarships. The PETRI girls are passionate about helping girls in Kenya make their dreams come true through education. Because the girls in both regions are teenagers, they understand the struggles of becoming young adults

PETRI decided to help financially support the education of a few girls so they can become doctors, lawyers, athletes or anything they dream of achieving. ‘Wayfaring’ A

s the city is poised to take on more development in the coming years, Islanders turn to each other and say, “More?” How will it all fit? And what about parking? We hope that new residents who choose to reside in the new apartments will come as perfectly formed commuters without cars. But we know better. More people means more pressure on traffic and parking in the Town Center. Yet apparently there is enough parking in the Town Center. Who knew? Counts by city staff and a study by a consultant say there is. Yet residents, shoppers and even Mercer Island City Councilmembers are not so sure. Parking is available. The problem is that it is not exactly where we want it to be — or where we can easily find it. Hard evidence can be deceiving. Each of the newer multi-use developments in the Town Center was required to provide adequate parking for building residents, businesses and their patrons. But those lots are hard to find. The bright blue ‘P’ signs don’t say if the parking is public or not. Entering these buildings is intimidating — requiring a shinny through a narrow alley or tunnel, where again, the driver must circle looking for the public spaces while avoiding other cars coming and going. It is claustrophobic and intimidating. Yet parking is not a right. Cars take up valuable real estate that here, more often than not, is privately held. The only place that makes sense for adding spots is along 77th Avenue S.E., which is not without its own issues — most importantly, that of the bike lane that allows cyclists to negotiate safely through the Town Center. It also serves as the main corridor for trucks that deliver to Island businesses. Along with city staff, the Council wants to encourage signs to direct shoppers to available parking places, a practice called ‘wayfaring.’ It is a pleasant-enough sounding word, but it does not capture the frustration of circling a block and dodging pedestrians, looking for a vacant spot. After a thoughtful discussion, the Council wisely decided to delay any further studies or changes, knowing that the mixed-use developments slated for the next few years, both real and imagined, will change the landscape once again. In the meantime, we will have to walk a few extra blocks. For more, see the story on page 6.

“Parking is available; it is just not where we want it or where we can find it.”

enrolled in a farming/horse care class taught by KCD. That led to the next class and the next as a desire to learn more. I’ve attended several workshops over the past two years. Farm tours sponsored by KCD and Horses for Clean Water were also of value. Being able to meet the owners and see different ways to do things on a farm is invaluable. Much of what I have learned has been incorporated at my farm. I now have a farm plan designed in coordination with KCD. The visits to my farm were extremely helpful, so much so that I ended up signing up as a participant in the farm program. I do take the farm business seriously and believe part of our success has came from what I’ve learned from KCD, its materials/handouts and the educational classes. It has also brought my farm and family to feel an added respect for the environment. We’ve learned how — with planning, and usually just our own labor — we can make a difference in the environment. Town Center parking is adequate – for now Is lack of parking a reality or perception; Council to revisit next year By Mary L. Grady

editor@mi-reporter.com

The Mercer Island City Council has revisited the ways that streets in the Town Center might be reconfigured to add more parking. Working from a 2008 study, the City Council took a look at the existing parking situation in the Town Center and mulled over the possibility of adding parking along 77th Avenue S.E. and what the impacts would be on cyclists, pedestrians, driv-

ers, employees and business owners. At issue is how to keep things moving in the Town Center — allow shoppers and employees to park, and be able to go place to place without moving a car multiple times, respect the property rights of those who own parking lots, accommodate large delivery trucks, keep the flow of pedestrians, cyclists and strollers safe and moving along — keeping things sustainable, safe and mobile. Particularly on the North end, parking is often fully utilized. Drivers are frustrated by the time it takes to find a spot to park. Those who come mid-morning to take transit into Seattle or Bellevue — who cannot find spots to park in the Park and Ride — have few alternatives to park their cars. Some shoppers park in private lots and proceed through other lots to shop at other businesses, a practice that frustrates businesses that operate the lots for their patrons. Business and building owners want to ensure that spaces in

Palmbergs honored for ‘Operation Nightwatch’ By Reporter Staff

Rev. Bud and Donna Palmberg, pastor emeritus of Mercer Island Covenant Church, were honored on Nov. 20 as founders of Operation Nightwatch. More than 400 guests attended a luncheon in their

honor and applauded as the Palmbergs were awarded Superman capes as “Heroes of the Homeless.” Operation Nightwatch was launched by Rev. Palmberg in 1967 and continues to provide food and shelter for 170 homeless people in downtown Seattle, along with an array of services. The lunch raised $90,000 to support of the effort to get people inside and off the streets.

However, enforcement of these restrictions is sporadic. “There is no ongoing regular parking enforcement in the Town Center,” City Traffic Engineer Patrick Yamashita told the City Council during a study session on Nov. 17. “It is only enforced on an as-needed basis and as resources are available.” Yet as each of the Councilmembers related their own experience or frustration of parking in the Town Center, the perception of most Islanders is that parking is scarce and a hassle.

School news IMS hosts shoe drive for homeless Students and families at Islander Middle School can help the Seattle homeless by dropping off new and gently used pairs of shoes until Nov. 30. Redeeming Soles, a local nonprofit, has distributed over 29,000 pairs of shoes to the homeless community and hopes to continue to do so. A collection bin is set up in the IMS front office and any new or gently used footwear is accepted. Specifically, Redeeming Soles is looking for men’s footwear. To learn more, contact cotsise@seattleu.edu.

IMS students named to All-State band and orchestra Several members of the Islander Middle School band and orchestra programs were named to the All-State groups, a high honor for the students. Students named to the All-State band include: Ryan Char, French horn; Adam Tucker, trumpet; Claire Stein, euphonium; Rebecca Bone, bassoon; Cameron Cummings, clarinet; and Zoe Sheill, flute. Students named to the All State orchestra include:

Joelle Arcunio, violin; Abby Lu, violin; Jonah Tang, violin; and Maxwell Van Gelder, string bass.

Malcolm Davis earns scholarship Malcolm Davis, formerly of Mercer Island, has earned the Ho’omau I Ka Po’okela (Continuing With Excellence) Scholarship for his seventh grade year at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, where he attends school on the Big Island of Hawaii. The merit scholarship is awarded to qualifying students with academic potential, as demonstrated by their Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) results. Along with an essay, applicants were required to attain a score of 2080 for the SSAT to be considered for the scholarship program. Davis was the only student to achieve this score. “I felt very proud,” Davis said. “It was hard to believe I won because there are so many smart kids at HPA, and I didn’t expect to be chosen.” Davis grew up on the Island and attended West Mercer Elementary School. His grandfather, Dick Footh, still lives here.

the Killing Devils. The band will play in Anaheim, St. Louis and New York, among several other cities in a coast-to-coast tour. Patterson, a sophomore at the Berklee College of Music, will be the lead guitarist for the band. Paul Brown has produced a number of CDs and has received international acclaim for his work. As noted in the NYC Village Voice a few years ago, Brown’s “music has been played all over the world. He is a gifted singer, songwriter and musician with one of the best progressive rock bands on the planet.” In July 2006, the Killing Devils released the critically acclaimed “Red Spider” CD. More recently, they have released “The Wizard’s Dawn,” also with outstanding reviews. Although proud of this development, Patterson’s parents have expressed some ambivalent feelings about their son’s recent accomplishment. “I didn’t exactly raise my son, or fork out music school tuition, for him to become a ‘killing devil,’” his father, David Patterson, stated. “Besides, my understanding is that the mission of a devil is really to steal souls rather than to kill. So to be touring with a band with inherent irony in its name presents an immediate challenge. “Also, I am not sure how being a ‘killing devil’ will come across when Jake submits a resume to be an elementary school music teacher or something.” Intended humor in the preceding paragraph notwithstanding, Patterson has been greatly influenced in his music by Mercer Island High School mentors Tom Cox (guitar and jazz choir) and Dave Bentley (jazz ensemble), as well as local Seattle notable musicians Greg Ruby and Jay Roberts.

As the temperature drops and winter approaches, the Mercer Island School District reminds families to be prepared for winter weather and the effects that it can have on schools. Decisions for late starts or closures are made by the superintendent no later than 5:30 a.m. and posted on the Public Schools Emergency Communication System at http://schoolreport.org. Radio and television stations get their information from that site. MISD also posts updates to its main district website in the event of a closure or late start.

White Gold

Ski FREE

Digging British Columbia’s legendary mother lode.

Here’s how it happens: you sink into a turn and a swirl of crystals envelopes you. A curtain of cold smoke hangs in the air as you link several more explosions before pausing for a well-deserved breath. As the cloud dissipates and sound drifts off like a wind dying in the tree-tops, a weight is lifted from your life. Maybe you don’t feel it right away because the void is filled by what you see: mountains on every horizon— rugged peaks, hanging glaciers, and welcoming bowls hemmed by gentle evergreen skirts. Above you, snow-ghosts picket a ridgeline, alabaster sentinels marching into a cerulean sky. Below you is a vast expanse of unbroken white. Snow of such elemental purity it defies description. In other places it’s called champagne powder, but here, following the mining traditions of the many British Columbia towns it blankets, it’s known as White Gold—because finding it brings a fortune in fun. You’ll know that after your first run. It might be the best skiing you’ve done in a lifetime of great skiing or just a spectacular introduction to wild and free and ridiculously good. And, as you slide back onto an immaculately groomed run to head back to the

lodge, you’ll wonder this: if this is just another winter day in B.C., what’s an exceptional one? Perhaps it’s time you found out. The scope and variety of B.C.’s ski areas is staggering. Whether your choice is located in the spectacular Coast, funky Interior or jagged Rockies, the variability in resort size and ambiance, the amount and diversity of groomed and offpiste terrain, and the consistency of quality snow that ranges from 10-15 metres (30-50 feet) each winter, you’ll know you’ve struck paydirt. Like Europe, B.C.’s vast spaces and convoluted ranges mean you can stay at a world class resort or an undiscovered gem just around the corner. You’ll also find friendly people, modern lifts, lodges ranging from rustic chic to ultramodern, and fabulous, award-winning food. Best of all, getting there is simple. Vancouver & Kelowna international airports act as gateways to B.C.—you can be skiing the same day you leave home. And if the snow happens to break around your knees as you dig into that first turn on your vacation, well, you’ll know. You just struck White Gold. SKI IT TO BELIEVE IT.com

The MIHS boys basketball captains this year are seniors Joe Rasmussen and Nick Nordale. Coach: Gavin Cree Number of athletes: 75 Last season: The Islanders advanced to the state regional tournament, after earning the No. 5 seed out of the district tournament. The team has a 21-9 record. Strengths: “We have a really good shooting team, and Joe Rasmussen inside,” said head coach Gavin Cree. “I think we have a good inside-out game. I think that we have to be more exception-oriented than we were last year. I think last year’s team was a little more athletic, but I like this year’s team’s attention to detail. I think we need to play to that strength and really execute and understand what we’re doing and being committed to be efficient on both ends of the floor.” Focus: “We’re always kind of doing the same things, but we’re trying to teach

right now,” said Cree. “We lost quite a few seniors — we had six seniors graduate last year. They all played a significant role; five of the six played a significant role. We have new guys at practice who are learning different points of emphasis. We’re trying to play fast. I think we’re always trying to do that — get the ball up the court quick and not allow the defense to set up.” “We have some threats on offense and working on our defense,” said captain Nick Nordale. Captains: Seniors Nick Nordale and Joe Rasmussen “These two guys, it should be noted, are really great, great leaders — the best leadership that I’ve been a part of here in terms of two captains. I’ve been here for nine years and they’ve been the best,” said the coach. Game to watch: Bel-

levue, Mount Si, Bellarmine Prep “Bellevue is always our big rival. They have a good team this year,” said Cree. “They have four or five starters back — we should be very competitive with them. Mount Si is a very good team this year. They have some players coming off injuries from last year, two very good players who didn’t play last year. We’re going to Arizona for a holiday tournament and playing some really tough competition. We’re also playing Bell Prep that’s a top five team, but we’re playing down there. They are going to be a state title contender in 4A. We have a tough schedule.” Both captains said they are excited for the usual suspects in KingCo, such as Bellevue and Mount Si, as well as the chance to play Bellarmine Prep.

88.9 and 94.5, will broadcast a variety of games throughout the season. Listen on the radio and online at www.hotjamz.org.

Coach: Kaela Yuen Number of athletes: 32 Last season: The Islanders lost in the first round of the KingCo tournament, ending the season with a 5-15 overall record. Strengths: “One of my main focuses is practicing at a high caliber, high intensity day in and day out,” said coach Kaela Yuen. “I truly believe practice should be harder than the games. Practice is about mental and physical preparation, so I expect my girls to do everything at game speed, with game-

type focus.” “We have a lot of size,” said senior Marlo Cafarelli. “It’s basically the same team from last year, and we have really good chemistry and everyone knows what their role is,” said captain Kris Brackmann. Focus: “We have been putting a lot of new offensive principles in, so we there is a learning curve and there will obviously be mistakes,” said the coach. “I try to focus on controlling the controllables, which means ensuring the girls are giving 100% effort on the floor.”

“We want to leave with a bang and leave it so the other girls can carry on the tradition,” said Brackmann. “It’s a different philosophy, but not a lot of big changes,” said Cafarelli about the team’s new head coach. “We want to take it as far as we can.” Captains: Seniors Marlo Cafarelli, Kris Brackmann and Christina Williamson Game to watch: Juanita, Bellevue, Mount Si “We’re playing Inglemoor, Newport and Redmond, which are all 4A,” said Brackmann.

Gymnastics

Contributed Photo

The Mercer Island gymnastics captains are Tonayo Crow, Monica Airut-Murphy and Emily Lightfoot. Coach: Lenny Lewis Number of athletes: 63 Last season: The Islanders finished second at the KingCo meet, fell to league rival Mount Si and finished fifth at the district meet, just short of qualifying as a team for the state meet. Four athletes competed at the state gymnastics meet in February. Strengths: “We’re stron-

ger than I thought we were going to be,” said head coach Lenny Lewis. “We lost several strong girls last year, and I didn’t know who was going to step up to take that place, but we have a couple girls. It looks like we’ll be able to put something together.” Focus: “We’re super young — we only have two seniors,” said Lewis. “Pretty much, we’re getting into shape

and looking at the girls and moving some into the second practice for varsity.” Captains: Senior Monica Aruit-Murphy and juniors Emily Lightfoot and Tonayo Crow Meet to watch: “I want to see how we post up against Mount Si,” said Lewis. “I know they’re going to be strong again. Juanita is supposed to have a team for the first time in a couple of years.”

Wrestling

Boys swimming

Megan Managan/Staff Photo

Seniors on the MIHS wrestling team include: Danny Stanke, Nick Chandler Luca Caruccio, Connor Gullstad, Ben O’Connell, Andy Picton and Mikalai Hubarevich. Coach: Creighton Laughary Number of athletes: 35 Last season: The Islanders finished seventh in state as a team, and senior Blake Johnson was the state champion in the 160-weight class, Mercer Island’s first individual champion in a decade. Another senior, Phil Frazier, finished second overall. The team finished sixth at regionals and second at the KingCo tournament. Strengths: “I think work ethic,” said Laughary. “We have a lot of guys who are back who watched our successful wrestlers last year, and some successful wrestlers are back. They are willing to work. It’s gratifying — I tell them to do something and they do it. They did preseason workouts of their own violation; I try not to require

it because I want them to enjoy their high school years, but it really shows their dedication.” “Last year, we started the season with a couple of senior girls, who were kind of going out for it on a lark, but they didn’t last very long,” said Laughary. “This year, we have two underclassmen and another considering it. We’re really enthused with having them. That’s exciting — Washington state, we’re one of the fastest growing populations of girl wrestlers in the country. They don’t usually come out at this school. It’s been growing by double digit percents each year.” Focus: “We’re going to focus on being really aggressive on our feet. We’ve been successful with the technique that our assistant coach, Adrian Diaz, and Lee Janke bring,

and we’re changing some things on our feet and the attack and really, rather than being a finesse team, being an aggressive team. Not much of a change,” said the coach. Seniors: Nick Chandler, Danny Stanke, Andy Picton, Ben O’Connell, Mikalai Hubarevich, Connor Gullstad and Luca Caruccio Meet to watch: “We’re really looking forward to our first one, a double duel on Dec. 4 with Everett and Inglemoor,” said the coach. “So a 3A power and a 4A power, both of them have wrestlers on the roster who were on the medal stand at state last year. Right away, we’re going to have a test. Beyond that, we’re always excited to have some home matches. We have a string in late January. Especially during finals, it’s nice to have one match and then be at home.”

Coach: Chauntelle Johnson Number of athletes: Over 60 Last season: The Islanders finished second in state, ending a six-year state title run. Mercer Island won the KingCo meet and took second to Lakeside during the SeaKing District meet — the team that would go on to beat Mercer Island in the state finals. Strengths: “Our sprint freestyles,” said coach Chauntelle Johnson. “We did time trials last week and had a lot of guys under 24 seconds in the 50.” “Diving,” said captain Sam Peterson. The team will have at least four seniors

and one sophomore diving this season. “And we have some great relays,” he added. This season the team has a lot of younger swimmers, said Johnson. “A lot of new guys who really want to get better,” she said. “Everyone’s really supportive,” said captain Harrison Leeds. Focus: “Getting their endurance back,” said Johnson. “Some of the guys play water polo, so working on their mechanics, and for others, even our year-round swimmers, getting them ready for a lot of racing.” “Teamwork,” said senior Sam Chong. “Showing

them that when we work as a whole, we can do something great.” “We want to make sure that everyone improves and has a KingCo time,” said Peterson. Captains: Seniors Cody Hall, Sam Chong, Sam Peterson, Harrison Leeds Meet to watch: Newport, Bellevue, Bainbridge Island, Kennedy Catholic, Lakeside “We’re also going to the Kentridge Invitational,” said Johnson. “Bellevue,” said the captains. “It’ll be close, but we can do it,” said Leeds. “Lakeridge, because they beat us last year at state; it’ll be tough,” said Chong.

It was at Starbucks, ironically, when he finally gave voice to what he had begun to feel about a possible vocation with his church. “My supervisor asked each of us who were working for him what we would be doing if we were not in our [present] job,” he said. “I answered that I would probably be working for the Catholic Church.” It was an answer that he had neither prepared nor imagined he would say. Yet it was prophetic. Within 18 months, he had left the corporate world and was employed at St. Monica. DiGirolamo remains grateful for that question. The formal formation process for his new role took more than four years. He has been working for the church, here, for seven years. He does not believe that his new title makes him terribly special. “I am just a reflection of what this parish has given me,” he said. Deacons remain somewhat rare. On and off over the past couple of decades, deacons have been added to the church clergy. The number of priests, who must take a vow of celibacy, has dwindled dramatically. Active priests are getting older and retiring. Far fewer men are entering the priesthood. According to data on the Archdiocese of Seattle website, there were 485 ordained priests in Seattle in 1966. In 2010, that number has fallen

element of the congregation itself into the mass. It all seems natural to DiGirolamo. “Having lay people leading the liturgy is how the church began,” he said. “It has always been part of the mass.” DiGirolamo will serve as a deacon for St. Monica Parish. St. Monica has about 1,450 families, or about 4,000 parishioners. As he stood on the altar at

St. James with the 21 other applicants for the deaconate, DiGirolamo said he thought of all the people who helped him on his journey to that moment. “I thought, we would not be standing there if we had not been invited,” he said. DiGirolamo and his wife, Shelley, live on Mercer Island with their daughter, Mary, who attends Holy Names Academy on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

When you need more than a flashlight times when the power was out for folks on the South end for more than 10 days. If you need electricity for your day-to-day needs such as an oxygen concentrator, what should you do? There is a lot of press, especially by King County, to be prepared for emergencies for three to seven days with enough food, water and other necessities. But for seniors to be able to maintain a chronic issue at home, they need to do some extra planning. This may involve finding another place to stay that has electricity, or have a generator installed and ready to go when the power goes out. Or discuss this with your family members to help

problem solve these issues. Maybe even have a plan in place so that family members take turns checking on their older relatives during a storm or power outage. If you do need regular oxygen, do you have any extra tanks that do not require electricity for your use, and do you know how to use them? Having enough food and water is usually easier than stockpiling medicines. Many insurance companies may only allow 30 days of pills, but some prescriptions could be changed by your physician to read for three months. and it can be intolerable to stay in your home when there is no heat. But if it is the best place for you to be and there are no other options, dress in your home like you are living in Alaska. Hats, scarves and gloves really do help to bite the chill. And the city of Mercer Island will open a warming shelter at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, which is a good option to get out of the cold. And don’t forget to have operating flashlights with extra batteries and a radio to listen to so that you can get updated emergency information. And then there are safety concerns regarding how to cook when the power is out. It can’t be said enough: Do not use a propane stove, charcoal barbecue or your gas stove inside the house.
