The Mercer Island School District Board of Directors will hold its December meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13, at City Hall in the City Council Chambers. The board will discuss the facilities master plan and will recognize the MIHS girls swimming team for being 3A state champions. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Channel 21.

MISD board meeting Thursday, Dec. 13
Condos — or the lack thereof — is the story for November real estate on Mercer Island. Of the 114 homes and condos available for sale in November, just four were condos, down from 19 condos a year ago. Just two condos were added to the Island inventory in November. Across Western Washington, the numbers of closed sales and selling prices both rose during November versus a year ago, while the selection continued to shrink. As a rule, fewer homes or condos are offered for sale as the holidays near. According to the latest market review by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, last month’s falloff was less than what some industry veterans anticipated. But perhaps everything has already sold. The number of final sales for November was a record. For the 21 counties within the NWMLS, there were reported 6,522 pending sales last month — the highest total for November in six years. Driving through major Island intersections during peak commute times, or when a special event is scheduled, traffic is sure to be heavy. While drivers know that in theory, now there is data to back it up. On Dec. 3, the Mercer Island School District Board of Directors received a report on traffic volumes done by a Seattle transportation consultant, Transpo, which looked at traffic near and around the district’s North Mercer Campus. Traffic counts were collected in October 2012 from Oct. 17 through Oct. 25,

looking at the hourly traffic patterns on different days of the week, and included Friday, Oct. 19, the night of the homecoming football game at the high school. Transpo also collected data at Island Crest Way and S.E. 40th Street; Island Crest Way, Merrimount Drive and S.E. 44th Street, as well as East Mercer Way and S.E. 36th Street. Traffic along S.E. 40th Street during a normal weekday is fairly standard, with peaks during the morning and evening commute times. During school day afternoons, however, there are two peak periods. The data shows that evening commute peak hour volumes on S.E. 40th Street are approximately 100 to 200 vehicles per hour higher than those occurring during school afternoon peak hour.
Yet, on Oct. 17, the same day as a Seattle Sounders game in downtown Seattle, showed a spike in cars along S.E. 40th Street, adding 200 vph more from 6 to 7 p.m. than the average from the same time earlier in the week. Since 2005, the last time a traffic study was done, tolls along State Route 520 have been put into place, affecting traffic along some Island streets and intersections. In the mornings, the largest increase was at the intersection of S.E. 40th and 86th Avenue S.E. with 14 percent more cars, while Island Crest Way and Merrimount dropped 8 percent. The afternoon commute changed the most. There was a 48 percent increase at 86th Avenue and S.E. 42nd Street, where just 315 cars traveled in 2005, jumping to 465 cars in 2012. The intersection of 92nd Avenue and S.E. 42nd Street also jumped, increasing 39 percent, while both the intersections at S.E. 40th Street and 92nd Avenue and S.E. 40th and 86th Avenue increased by 25 percent. Just in time for the holidays, three topiary deer cultivated in Oregon have taken up residence in downtown Mercer Island. Named “Gazing,” these living sculptures will be permanent residents as part of the Mercer Island Arts Council’s addition to the Lid Sculpture Park. Each deer is grown from two moonglow junipers and will live indefinitely with proper care. Please note that these beautiful but fragile creatures are only for appreciating — not for playing with or climbing on. not have a similar impact. For example, a new K-5 elementary school on the North Mercer Campus would only cause “minimal change to the current existing trip generation.” While a new school would displace some parking for the high school, it would not require additional driving lanes. With a 650 student middle school, the morning peak hour would likely include 351 trips with 193 coming and 158 leaving, while the study found around 202 trips are likely for the school afternoon peak. How many walk, drive to MIHS Since 2010, MISD has given a survey to students at Mercer Island High School asking them how they get to school. The report is required as part of the PEAK agreement. According to the report, 1,261 students were surveyed, equaling 86 percent of the school population. Students answered if they carpooled to school, drove alone, took the bus, walked or biked. • Fifty percent (636 students) said they carpool
to school; 20 percent (246 students) said they drove alone. • Eighteen percent (225 students) took the bus. • 11 percent (136 students) walked and 1 percent (18 students) biked. Compared to 2011, the number of students in each category increased except walking, which went down from 13.1 percent in 2011 to 10.8 in 2012. Of the students who live in the walk zone, 178 said they walked or biked, while 135 drove. In 2011, 209 walked and biked while 120 drove.

n just two dozen pages, the Seattle communications consultant, Triangle Associates, plainly laid out the situation facing the Mercer Island School District Board of Directors in obtaining voter approval to fund the rebuilding of Mercer Island public schools. Their key recommendation is for the school district to hold back on moving forward too quickly with a new bond measure — whether it is for a single school, the merely palatable 1.b option or any other iteration. Any new bond proposal at this point would likely fail again. Islanders are not ready — they are still recovering from the shock of the unimaginable amount of money they were asked to accept last time. Instead, the board must continue to reach out and rebuild trust within the community for perceived missteps regarding the management of school assets — real or imagined — whether they are material to the issue at hand or not. And following that, bring them along into the realities of what a 21st century education is all about. The first sentence in the Executive Summary states that Islanders, while caring deeply about schools and the education of Island youth here, do not understand key elements of what is needed. In particular, the report says that “some citizens do not have a clear understanding of how overcrowding impacts the quality of schools.” School district facilities are 20 percent over capacity. More than 4,600 students are squeezing into space that was designed to house 3,900. Often heard is the fact that Islander students continue to excel despite less-than-adequate facilities. Something is working right, they say. Still left by the wayside is the concept that the need for new facilities goes beyond providing physical space. A 21st century education is needed for 21st century jobs and living. Who knew that the real teaching job for the school district would be to convince Islanders that schools and teaching have changed dramatically?

The victim, a 23-year-old man, had been inside Mo’s Pizza between 1:45 and 3 p.m. The handle and lock of his vehicle door were damaged, but the car was not entered. Fingerprints were lifted for evidence. Arrest: A police officer arrested a 40-year-old man at 11:40 p.m. in the 8000 block of S.E. 28th Street after stopping his pickup truck for expired tabs and the registered owner’s suspended license. The officer found a handgun on the floorboard and the driver claimed it was an airsoft. A narcotics pipe was next to the gun, underneath the driver’s seat. The pipe had been used with heroin. The truck was impounded.

Ritchie William Tilson
Husband, father, engineer, woodworking craftsman. Born in 1919, Ritchie William Tilson was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. At 21 he chose America citizenship while working for Boeing Canada and migrated to Seattle to work for Boeing as a B17 tool engineer, shop foreman, and then manager during WWII. It’s here he met and married his wife of 67 years, Lorna McNair. After the war Ritchie put himself through college at the University of Washington where he obtained a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, then post graduate studies. He worked as an engineer at Standard Oil in San Francisco, but soon returned to Seattle with his wife to work for Boeing. During his 38-year career at Boeing, Ritchie was the Director of Material for 10 years and Director of Engine Management for 13 years. He retired in 1982. After retiring, Ritchie and Lorna traveled for several years in the US and international destinations, and spent time at their Whidbey Island vacation home. In the fall of 1983 the Boeing Museum of Flight opened its doors. Eager to share his interest in aviation history, commercial aviation, and aircraft engines, Ritchie became one of the 21 “pioneers” volunteering as the Museum of Flight Docent Corps. He was the last of the original Museum of Flight pioneers to retire after 25 years of service. Ritchie and Lorna resided and raised their family in Clyde Hill, WA for more than 50 years. He was active at Bellevue and University Presbyterian churches as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and elder. He died November 29, 2012 at the age of 93 surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia, of Vancouver BC. He is survived by his wife Lorna and their four children Wayne (Lori); Dale (Joan); Jean (Paul Wiegand), and Doreen (Greg Farrar), as well as eight grandchildren (Erin, Lisa, Ken, John, Emily, Mallory, Joe, Megan), and one great grandson (Alex). Dec. 2 Car prowls: A handgun with
two loaded magazines was stolen out of a Ford truck, along with other items, sometime overnight in the 3000 block of 61st Avenue S.E. The 53-year-old victim said the vehicle had been locked, but a forced entry was not evident. An iPhone worth $200 was stolen out of an unlocked Audi overnight in the 5900 block of S.E. 30th Street, in an open, private area — a theft related to several other incidents. Burglary: Three vehicles, including a Ford and Audi, were prowled in the 5900 block of S.E. 30th Street, a block north of Proctor
Landing, sometime overnight. One vehicle was inside the victim’s open garage and the others were parked in the driveway. A knife was stolen, but no other items were missing.
Dec. 3 Trespass: North QFC employees reported a 22-year-old suspect to police at 1 a.m. The suspect had been trespassed from the QFC. He was arrested on an outstanding Bellevue warrant a few blocks from the QFC and was served new trespass papers along with a criminal trespass citation. Theft: A 34-year-old woman’s purse was stolen out of a classroom at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church at 3605 84th Ave. S.E. sometime between 4:30 and 7 p.m. The purse contained a Coach wallet, driver’s license, debit card and check book. Found keys: A key ring with miscellaneous keys and a broken vehicle remote found at a Mercer Island park was turned in at the Kirkland Police Department and transferred to the MIPD.

Helen L. Thiessen, 85, died December 1, 2012 in the home of her youngest daughter in Maple Valley, WA. She was born and grew up in Michigan where she studied to become a Licensed RN. Helen met her husband Peter in Michigan where they were married and lived for many years. In the 1960’s she and her family moved to Washington and lived on Mercer Island. Helen retired from Group Health where she specialized as a labor and delivery RN. Helen is survived by two daughters Patricia and Deborah, three grandsons Alex, Kurtis and Thomas and one sister Ruth. Peter, her husband of 59 years passed away in 2009. Her committal is scheduled for 1:15 PM, Friday, December 14, 2012 at Tahoma National Cemetery. Mary Doherty Yagle, aged 91, died peacefully at her Mercer Island home on Thursday, November 29, 2012, with her family gathered at her side. She is survived by her sons and daughters: ThomasYagle (La Neu), EllenYagle, Kevin Yagle (Dianne Botta), Elizabeth Yagle (Wayne Ainsworth), MatthewYagle (Jenise Yagle), Joseph Yagle, Mary Yagle (Nathan Ellis); grandchildren: Nicole, Katherine, Ian, Brienne, Stephan, Madeline, Rosalind, and Owen; sisters Jane Reilly and Sarah Morris; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph Yagle, and brothers George Doherty and Brian Doherty. Mary graduated at age fifteen from St. Leo’s high school in Tacoma, and with honors from Seattle College (now University), where she met Joe, her future husband. In addition to raising her seven children, Mary found the time to enjoy the arts, gardening, travel, and playing bridge. She also instilled in her children her love of reading. She had a quick Irish wit and never lost her sense of humor. Mary and Joe built their house on Mercer Island in 1948, and were founding members of St. Monica Catholic Church. ended a Jeep at 9:32 a.m. in the 3400 block of Island Crest Way. The Mercedes driver, 42, said that she saw the Jeep stopped for traffic, but she could not stop in time because her brakes were not “operating properly,” according to the case report. Fender-bender: A Mercer Island woman, 57, reported that a vehicle backed into her Chevrolet SUV at 3:58 p.m. in the Island Corporate Center parking lot at 7525 S.E. 24th Street. The victim had been talking on her cell phone while parked. She spoke to the other driver, who denied the collision and left the scene. The victim reported back pain. Ladder theft: Someone stole a folding metal ladder, worth $250, outside of a 73-yearold man’s residence in the 7600 block of East Mercer Way, near Clarke Beach, between 7:30 a.m. and 9:50 p.m.

Car theft thwarted at Lid Park WSDOT site The theft of a WSDOT employee’s vehicle was interrupted at the Park on the Lid between 8 and 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, after City of Mercer Island workers informed a police officer of a suspicious person near the WSDOT Tunnel Facility in the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. The police officer contacted the subject inside a vehicle with a broken window and a severely damaged steering column and wiring. The 21-year-old man, who said that “the owner had traded him vehicles,” was in the process of stealing the vehicle, a Kia Motors Corp. Sportage. The officer contacted the vehicle’s owner, who said that no one had been authorized to enter or drive his vehicle. The suspect was arrested at 9:27 a.m. and was booked into the King County Jail. in the 5300 block of Island Crest Way. One other witness was present. Jacoba Katherine (Burema) Schembs, died peacefully with her family at her side on Thursday, November 29, 2012 in Mercer Island, three days after celebrating her 100 birthday. She was born in Chicago, and lived there, Cincinnati and Mercer Island. Following graduation from IIT she taught elementary school. After raising three children she went back to teaching, a passion she loved. In Seattle she was active with Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Womens University Club, and the Mercer Island Womens Club. She was an avid reader, gardener, traveler, and loved life to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank and daughter Julia Papacostas. Jacoba is survived by her son, Frank Schembs, (Jean), daughter, Jacoba Atkins, (Clay); and son-in law Frank; grandchildren, Stephen Schembs, Keith Schembs, (Polly), Kristin Feronti, (Rich), John Atkins, (Melody), Davis Atkins, Nicholas Papacostas (Elizabeth), Michael Papacostas, (Bethany), Katherine, Anne and John Papacostas, and great grandchildren, Lauren, Morgan, Kassandra, Prescott, Rich, Ella and Lucy. A new online survey launched this week invites Washington citizens to share their ideas about the state’s transportation priorities and how to pay for them. This January, the Legislature and governor will be faced with tough choices on how the state’s growing transportation needs will be met. A combination of changing driving habits, increased vehicle fuel efficiency and increasing numbers of electric vehicles makes the gas tax an unsustainable transportation revenue source for the long-term. Washington residents who have joined the Voice of Washington State (VOWS) survey panel will receive an email inviting them to take an online survey. Mercer Island man convicted of tax fraud By Megan Managan

A Mercer Island resident was sentenced by the United States District Court of Western Washington to five years of probation and ordered to pay restitution of $154,309 on Nov. 30 after being found guilty of tax fraud. David Murphy, who owned a credit consulting business, NW Credit Consultants, Inc., was charged this past January with four counts of filing a false tax return. Murphy pled guilty to one of those charges. The charges stem from returns filed in 2006 for the years 2001-2004, when Murphy falsified tax documents for his credit consulting business. Also in 2006, Murphy approved and filed the business’s tax returns for 2001, 2002 and 2003, all of which included false information that the IRS found. In 2009, Murphy filed an amended return for those four years. The amended returns showed much different numbers in relation to the advertising expenses in the original returns. The estimated tax loss for those years was calculated by the IRS to be $154,309. “Mr. Murphy, as sole owner, and principal operator of his business, certainly knew that the tax returns he finally filed in 2006 contained materially false information, yet he repeatedly stood by those clearly fraudulent returns. Subsequently, he filed amended returns that also understated the taxes he owed,” said the sentencing memo. The returns were all prepared by Albert Decker, who owned Accountable Business Services in Arizona. Decker pled guilty to charges unrelated to Murphy’s and served a jail sentence and probation in Arizona. In the sentencing motion, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said they recommended a term of incarceration followed by home detention, and that Murphy should be required to pay restitution in the amount of owed taxes. While the court sentenced him to five years of probation, Murphy will be monitored by a GPS device for seven months.

He also noted a “definite uptick” in the number of cash buyers, “many of which are investors.” Commenting on the expected dip in activity, Jacobi said it “was less than we usually experience during this time of year.” Based on the current combination of sparse inventory and high buyer demand, Jacobi said those who are considering selling are encouraged to “list their homes sooner rather
than later” in order to take advantage of unique market conditions. The number of new listings added to the inventory of homes for sale in NWMLS counties fell by 12 percent. Inventory, which typically shrinks during the holidays, fell by more than 30 percent from 12 months ago. The NWMLS condo inventory is at half the prior year’s levels. In King County, single family homes that closed during November commanded the highest median price at $385,000 (up 19.7 percent), edging out San Juan County’s median selling price of $375,000.

Two new 4-year degrees at Bellevue College By Reporter Staff
Bellevue College received permission last week from the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges to develop two new bachelor’s degree programs: in Nursing and Information Systems and Technology. BC decided to add degrees in these fields after labor market research indicated a growing need in the Puget Sound region for workers with at least a bachelor’s degree for both nursing (BSN) and information technology (IT). A BSN is already required at area hospitals, including Seattle Children’s, Swedish and UW Medical Centers. Statistics indicate that a bachelor’s degree in IT is now considered the minimum level of education for a variety of IT jobs. The first of its kind in the state, IT students at BC can specialize in: application development, business intelligence; systems administration; and information security. There are three existing four-year degrees at BC: Healthcare Technology and Management; Radiology and Imaging Sciences, and Interior Design. Two more degrees, biological and environmental technology and data analytics, have been proposed. They could begin in 2014.

Islanders upset No. 3 Bellarmine Prep Saturday By Megan Managan

The day after earning the first KingCo win of the season over Sammamish, the Mercer Island boys basketball team traveled to Tacoma to take on 4A Bellarmine Prep in a nonleague game. Prep was ranked No. 3 in the state, but the Islanders hung on to win 56-48 in overtime. Bellarmine held a 26-22 lead at halftime, and added 11 points in the third quarter to extend the lead going into the final minutes of the game. In the fourth quarter, Mercer Island surged, scoring 11 points, while holding Prep to just six points to tie the game at 43 points each, forcing the game into overtime. The Islanders dominated the extra period, scoring 13 points to Prep’s five to win the game. Senior captain Nick Nordale had 17 points in the win, while the team’s other captain, Joe Rasmussen, added 15. Will Taylor had eight points, Espen Platou had six, as did Kaleb Warner, while Jake Shaddle had four points. On Friday night, Mercer Island traveled to play Sammamish in the Islanders’ first KingCo game of the year. The Islanders won 72-48. The team dominated the game throughout, holding

In the 200-medley relay event, the Islanders team of Andrew Weiss, Andrew Fukuda, Duncan Koontz and Noah Dieparine won with a time of 1:46.16. He’s a behind-the-scenes type of guy who has been thrust into the spotlight — fairly or unfairly labeled the professional basketball savor of Seattle. On Monday, amidst the early morning fog, a crowd gathered at the Mercer

Community news ‘Dessert Before Dinner’ fundraiser to include harpist If you drive slowly enough past the corner of Island Crest Way and 82nd Avenue, you might be lucky enough to catch the faint strain of melodious harp music wafting by your windows. The music comes from renowned harpist Leslie McMichael, who can be seen and heard working passionately with her students at Mercer Island Music week in and week out throughout the year. McMichael, who lives on Vashon Island, is a graduate of Wellesley College, an accomplished Suzuki instructor, and is thrilled to be doing what she loves for a living. In addition to teaching on the Island, McMichael is a member of the Suzuki Academy faculty at the Music Center of the Northwest; has served as president of the Seattle Chapter of the American Harp Society; and has adjudicated at numerous festivals. She was recently commissioned by the Northwest Film Forum to compose and perform an original score for the 1924 silent film, “Peter Pan,” which she toured the country with. On top of her busy teaching and touring schedule, McMichael finds time to organize and run benefit concerts for local charities. A recent concert featuring over 20 harpists playing in unison raised money for Youth Care, a nonprofit agency serving Seattle’s homeless youth. Attendees at this coming Sunday’s “Dessert Before Dinner” will have an opportunity to treat themselves to some of this atmosphere of beauty and joy as McMichael and a number of the instructors and students from Mercer Island Music and Musical Mind Studios collaborate with the Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department to perform a festive concert. The event runs from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, and includes fine desserts as well as a silent auction. Kix and Spinz fitness center opens on South end A new fitness center has opened in the South end shopping center. Classes at Kix and Spinz started this week. Newly married couple Aron and Yaffa Penski opened the business out of their shared passion for health and exercise. An official grand opening will be held in January. After holding fitness camps in the summer, Kix and Spinz now has a new permanent space at 8451 S.E. 68th Street, Suite 105. Personal training sessions are offered along with functional interval group training sessions for adults and kids — tailored to each age level. Fitness for kids, age 10 and up, includes everything from everyday movements and strength training to core, cardio and gymnastics endurance, complete with a climbing rope and agility ladders. “Kids really need a place to come to get their fitness and health needs met,” Yaffa said. “We really want to offer a place where people can take care of themselves. ” Aron is a personal trainer and Yaffa’s experience is in public health, and both are certified in youth fitness. Aron is also certified in adult fitness. A MIHS graduate, he grew up on the Island, and now Yaffa’s
three young children attend Island schools. “We are bringing our passion for a healthy lifestyle to the community and families,” Yaffa said. Class times are 9:30 a.m., 12 and 5:30 p.m. for adults, and 4:30 p.m. for kids, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Personal appointments may be scheduled between classes. IMS student starts online hat business Thirteen-year-old Islander Marcus Schiller, along with his parents, has launched Hattachables. com, an online store where he sells his own invention: hat accessories. Like many people, Schiller enjoys expressing himself by wearing different baseball hats. “Because the price of having multiple hats adds up, I wanted a way to change the hats that I had,” he said. Schiller thought of a unique solution for wearing the same hat over and over again but making it look different. With over 70 different pins available (and more coming), Hattachable founders say there are a variety of ways to express yourself. Schiller is a hard worker both in school and in sports. Recently, he was honored as “Student of the Trimester” at Islander Middle School. He is part of a family familiar with entrepreneurship. His parents have owned

‘Upright’ Islander writes, stars in one-woman show “Murder Abbey,” a solo costume drama parody written and performed by Upright Citizens Brigade member, Kate Hess, is being performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in Los Angeles. Hess, a native of Mercer Island, graduated from Mercer Island High School and performed with Youth Theatre Northwest, Seattle Children’s Theatre and the MIHS Drama Club.
In New York, Hess performed improv and sketch regularly at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. At UCB-NY, she wrote and starred in “The Palin Family All Star Revue & Election Spectacular” and “We Kate Shelly,” which Time Out NY called “silly, adroit, and unique all at once.” The review described “Murder Abbey” as a take on all Masterpiece Theatre costume dramas: “[Hess] mashes together ‘Downton Abbey’ and an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery, paying homage not just to Downton but to the larger Masterpiece brand.” An excerpt from Murder Abbey can be viewed at https://vimeo. com/47388543.
