As the country and world mourn the losses of life from last Friday’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, questions have been raised about why and how this happened. Debates have been sparked concerning a number of topics including gun control and mental health. Concerns have also been raised about school security and safety. In response, school districts nationwide are looking at their emergency procedures to make sure what they have in place is the best it can be. In Redmond, it’s no different. Kathryn Reith, director of communications for Lake Washington School District (LWSD), said they will be taking another look at their emergency plans to make sure they are doing all they can to keep students safe. She said school safety is a regular conversation among principals and teachers.

Day of Remembrance tomorrow at City Hall A Day of Remembrance for Sandy Hook Elementary School children/ staff will be held from 9-10 a.m. tomorrow at City Hall, 15670 N.E. 85th St. Each name of these individuals who were killed in the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., will be read with a balloon release to follow. Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings afterward.

Belshaw said all this practice allows staff to debrief and make changes and enhancements where needed, adding that her staff have told her that they feel better and more relaxed after all the practice because they feel more prepared to do what they need to in the case of emergency. Belshaw said this is why it is important to practice. “If we practice it, I really believe they will go on autopilot,” she said about staff and students alike. Belshaw cited the Nisqually earthquake that shook the area in 2001 as an example. How did SUNDANCE Energy get started? Back in 1981 we primarily did solar water heating and pool heating. We did that until 1985 when the federal government stopped offering a tax credit for installing solar energy systems. At that point we had to reinvent ourselves. We wanted to keep the same theme, which was saving people money and offering environmental solutions for the home. What made the most sense to our business was natural gas and it’s sustained our business since. We’ve been around for over 30 years now.

How does your company promote the use of clean energy? When we burn coal, oil, diesel, wood – all of these things are bad for air quality. They put pollution in the air and cause health problems for our families. Natural gas is a clean burning fuel source. The beauty of burning natural gas is it produces water, heat and carbon dioxide which has no particulate pollution in it. Natural gas fireplaces are the most romantic and clean way to heat your home and provide comfortable heat in a power outage. Heating our homes is an essential

need for everyone so we really believe the most environmentally friendly way over the years has been natural gas or high efficiency heat pumps. The new product on the market is ductless heat pumps. They do use electricity but because of its efficiency, they are probably the most environmentally sound way to heat. It also makes a lot of sense financially as it is 3 times more efficient than electric heat and 5 times more efficient than oil or propane heat and half the cost of a high efficiency gas furnace. Homeowners can find substantial savings on their heating. Whenever we do something that’s really good for the environment, it tends to be really good financially as well.

Why is your business important for the Puget Sound? The largest energy cost is heating. People need reliable, comfortable heat that doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg. On a cold winter, people end up spending too much money and sometimes unfortunately, they start being uncomfortable in their homes. We want to make sure that people can afford to be comfortable and not too cold.

How does the US compare to other countries in ductless heat pump installation? In 2009, Japan installed 7 million ductless heat pumps, China installed 16 million units, and Europe installed 7 million units. Comparably, the U.S. only had 300,000 new installations. We have traditionally used horribly inefficient heating systems. Puget Sound Energy, Seattle City Lights and Snohomish County PUD offer their largest rebates as they recognized ductless heat pumps

Worcester Wreath Company in Maine, arranged to have their surplus of wreaths at the end of the holiday season placed at grave sites at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. to honor the country’s veterans. The program continued and expanded to include cemeteries throughout the country. “It just gradually really started spreading,” Riddell said, adding that about 500 cemeteries participated in the nationwide event this year. During the ceremony, seven wreaths were placed around the flagpole to represent each branch of the military and 41 wreaths were placed on grave sites throughout the cemetery. “It was really wonderful to see all of those wreaths laid on those grave sites,” Riddell said. She said WAA is meant to honor veterans, to “remember what they did for our country and to teach our children.” Redmond Mayor John Marchione spoke at the event at Cedar Lawns, discussing the veterans buried in Redmond and touching on the city’s centennial. While WAA provided the programming for the ceremony and Riddell and DAR coordinated volunteers — many of which were veterans from Redmond VFW Post 2995 — Cedar Lawns provided tents and canopies for rain protection, blankets for people to stay warm, refreshments and beverages. Harris Helgeson, family service supervisor at Cedar Lawns, worked with Riddell on organizing the event. As a Vietnam War veteran, he said he is a big supporter of what veterans do for the
country.

In addition to providing volunteers for the WAA event, VFW Post 2995 also held an event at the VFW Foley Hall in Redmond to present World War II veteran Wilbur Keith Atherton with the Quilt of Valor. In an email, VFW senior Arlene Steele wrote that the Quilt of Valor is a wartime quilt made to honor veterans wounded during wartime. “It is a tangible way to say, ‘Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor for our country,’” Steele wrote. “A Quilt of Valor is not a charity quilt nor a service quilt. He joined the Navy Seabees when he was 17, serving in WWII from March 1945 to June 1946. Atherton served as a merchant mate in Okinawa, Japan. He joined the U.S. Army when he was 18 in September 1946, serving as a corporal for three years. In 1949, Atherton transferred to the Army Engineers until 1952. He took a few years off and then joined the Washington Nation Guard in 1956. He was sent to training as a communications specialist at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. After 12 years of service in the National Guard, Atherton retired as a master sergeant. During his service, Atherton received three Bronze Stars with Valor. After retiring from the service, he went to work for Caterpillar Tractor Dealers in Yakima, where he retired again after 18 years in 1968. Keith married his wife Teresa in June of 1952. Together, they have seven children and 27 grandchildren. Three of their sons joined the Army and one grandson, who served in Iraq and was wounded in the line of duty. Atherton joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) on Aug. 31, 1999 and is a life member of post 6785 Kent Meridian. He currently lives with his daughter and son-in-law in Cottage Lake and is learning to play the fiddle to keep him busy. After Atherton’s presentation, the VFW held a ceremony to honor the Patriots Pen and the Voice of Democracy scholarship winners to grade school children in the area, who wrote essays about the United States.

Not again. Will the madness ever end? I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears. It’s happened again. Those were my thoughts last Friday morning as I watched in horror at my television when news spread of the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. What is going on in our world? Why do people take guns to a school — or anywhere for that matter — and kill innocent people? I understand that people have guns for protection in this mixed-up world, but this is ludicrous that someone would choose to do something so horrific as to gun down children and adults who are there to protect them from harm and lead them along the path to success in life. I think back to all the times I was in school as a kid, and even nowadays when I visit schools to cover a story. A positive story about how good things are happening in our schools. As an adult, especially in the years following the Columbine killings, I’m often a bit apprehensive walking around school campuses. I’m there to do my job and interview people for stories, but I can’t help myself from peeking around the place just to make sure everything looks OK. Safe. We’ve seen these Newtown and Columbine types of tragedies all too often — most not as massive, but always tragic — and I’m sure that we all wonder what we’d do if we were in the position of the victims
at those schools. Would we go after the shooter? Close a door and protect ourselves and others? Shield others from shots? I think we would all do what was in our hearts in order to make the situation end and keep others out of harm’s way. We never think that this will actually happen to us or our loved ones, but we’ve got to watch out for each other every day. Keep things around us as safe as possible. Have faith that everything will be OK.

Congress must reinstate the assault weapons ban in wake of school shooting We live in a politically polarized and divisive time. But surely, in the wake of the horrific school shooting in Connecticut that killed 20 children and six adults, we can come together to force our leaders to ban all semi-automatic assault weapons and highcapacity ammunition magazines. We can no longer simply grieve from the sidelines — after the fact — for far-away victims. We fool ourselves by thinking that tragedies like the one that visited Sandy Hook Elementary only happen “somewhere else.” Congress must reinstate the assault weapons ban — the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act of 1994 — which was allowed to expire in 2004. We can no longer allow the National Rifle Association (NRA) or other special interests to use political extortion and pressure tactics to prevent us from enacting commonsense legislation. I’m not naïve. Nothing can keep us absolutely safe. But we must do what we can to minimize the likelihood that weapons designed solely for mass killing are no longer available. And let’s be clear: few are advocating for
a ban on handguns or hunting weapons. The slippery slope argument that the NRA espouses is a canard used to prevent reasonable legislation that even numerous NRA members favor. What will it take for our political representatives to finally take action — a mass murder at a daycare facility, a hospital, an old-age home? Let’s hope not. ‘What could be a more accepted tradition than Christmas?’ I am amazed at how Leah Koenig can write an article about the “holidays” two weeks before Dec. 25 and not once mention Christmas (Dec. 7 Reporter). Christmas is not only recognized as a national holiday here in the U.S. but celebrated by millions of Christians around the world. I’m also astonished at how her elementary school students wrote poems about what they enjoy about their “holidays” and not one wrote about Santa Claus or Christmas presents. That in itself is amazing, I wonder where they got that idea. She states that the assignment was a reminder of what a
simple lens our children view the “holidays” through and what creates memories: traditions. What could be a more accepted tradition than Christmas? A tradition that people all over the globe celebrate. A tradition built on the phase “peace on Earth and goodwill toward man.” People like Leah Koenig are diminishing the true meaning and wonderful tradition of Christmas by referring to it as just a “holiday.” Giving or exchanging gifts at Christmas time is a sign of offering peace to one another. I don’t know about the kids in her class but I don’t remember one hot chocolate, one bedtime story or ever frosting sugar cookies. What I do remember is my first Lionel model train, my first bicycle and my first baseball mitt, all of which came from Santa. What a wonderful tradition. By the way, I didn’t get “holiday” pajamas, I got Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve. When we went out caroling, we sang Christmas carols. We didn’t wrap “holiday” gifts, we wrapped Christmas gifts. We didn’t go out as a family tradition and buy a “holiday” tree, we bought a Christmas tree. She talks about reducing the ambiguity and anxiety from the “holidays.” What is more ambiguous than to not recognize Christmas? Other than Easter, it might be the most celebrated holiday in the world.

As a result, anything the United States brings to the table is not taken seriously. “It’s kind of making us look bad on the international scene,” Catlin said. “We’re ignoring international justice for the sake of a little comfort here.” The UNFCCC allows non-governmental organizations (NGOs), indigenous groups, women’s groups and youth groups such as SustainUS to attend as observer parties. As an observer party,
Catlin said they are able to meet with the negotiator for the United States to ask questions and get information. Observer parties are also able to give an intervention, which means making a public statement in a plenary with representatives from all countries. Catlin said observer parties can also hold sanctioned protests within the conference in designated areas. “You can use that to try and get at a negotiator,” she said, adding that gaining media attention is another goal of a protest.
Catlin and her fellow youth protested and held up signs about the lack of leadership that has blocked progress on any type of international agreement. Doha was Catlin’s second UNFCCC. She attended last year’s convention in South Africa and said she felt “an overwhelming amount of emotion” at being able to attend when she was only 21. “I’m still kind of shocked that this is even an opportunity,” she admitted. delegations to U.N. conferences on climate change, sustainable development, social development, women and biological diversity,” said Yeung. “At these conferences, SustainUS delegations work with hundreds of young people from across the globe to advocate for robust sustainable development policies.” While at the UNFCCC, SustainUS delegations lobby government officials, stage actions to bring attention to pressing issues and work to generate media attention. “One of the major campaigns that SustainUS conducted this year was calling for U.S. Congress to move forward with climate legislation, given that U.S. inaction on climate change has been one of the largest hurdles to achieving an international climate treaty,” Yeung said. Catlin said while there are so many issues that need to be addressed nowadays, climate change should be a top priority because it affects so many things, ranging from the global gross domestic product to national security. “It’s very much the steak, it’s the meat (of the issue),” she said.

Kate Catlin was first introduced to environmentalism when she was a student at Redmond High School (RHS). “I’m a ‘Townie,’” she said, referring to her former science teacher, Mike Town. Since then, the 22-yearold Gonzaga University senior has become an environmental activist, working at various levels. She spent a year in Washington, D.C., helping high schools go green and has worked with young people worldwide on developing policies to address climate change. Most recently, Catlin attended the 18th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Doha, Qatar, as leader of the youth delegation with SustainUS. The convention was held Nov. 26 through Dec. 8 and brings world leaders together to try and negotiate a legally binding agreement to mitigate climate change. “This process has been largely unsuccessful,” Catlin said. She said part of this has been due to the United States’ hesitation and the fact that this country does
SustainUS. SustainUS chair Louise Yeung said Catlin, who is studying economics with a concentration on entrepreneurship, was very active in lobbying for innovative climate finance policy. “As one of the outstanding stars of the 2011 delegation, we brought her back on as the delegation leader for this year’s negotiations,” Yeung said. “Through her effective leadership, she has helped to build a tremendous amount of capacity for this year’s delegation.” As leader, Catlin organized trainings and working sessions on a range of science and policy topics to prepare the delegation to be effective on the ground. She also managed the logistics of sending 20 young people to Doha. SustainUS is a youthled NGO that empowers young people to advance sustainable development. Catlin said everyone involved is 26 and younger. The organization was started in 2001 by a group of young people who decided to organize a delegation to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. “Over the past decade, SustainUS has expanded its presence to send youth

At Lake Washington School District (LWSD), school counselors work with their school principals and

High schools in LWSD can have up to four counselors; middle schools will also have a couple and elementary schools will have one full-time or part-time counselor who splits their time with other schools. Dale Cote, who oversees the district’s counselors, said if something has happened at a specific school, he will work with the counselors there to assess the situation and see if they need to deploy more counselors to the site. The most recent incident in which this happened was after the death of Jackson Roos, an Evergreen Middle School student who died in
September in a zip-lining accident. Cote said everyone dealt with the tragedy differently but some students did see counselors. “It’s a safe place for kids just to say what’s on their mind and say what’s on their heart,” he said. “(The counselors) were utilized that day, sadly, but they were.” If a teacher or other staff member is struggling, Cote said the district provides access to professional counseling services through its benefits package.

THE NEED FOR MEANINGFUL CHANGE
ASKING FOR HELP
Conrad said everyone reacts to tragic events differently and if parents see that their children are reacting more severely, they should seek professional help. Signs include problems sleeping, wanting to sleep with their parents for an extended period of time, an obsessive need for reassurance and a fear to go back to school. Both Cote and Scriven agreed on seeking outside assistance. “We may invite outside counselors depending on the situation,” Cote said. Scriven, who offers basic counseling and can answer spiritual questions, added, “There’s no shame in getting help…We ask for help and we acknowledge that (some things are beyond our abilities).”
In the aftermath of a tragic event, religion is also a place people may turn. Cara Scriven, the pastor at Redmond United Methodist Church in downtown, said people will often question God’s existence and presence in the wake of such “evil.” “As a pastor, the way I addressed them…is to look to the places where God is working in these situations,” she said. In the case of Sandy Hook, Scriven cited the heroics of the teachers and first responders, as well as the way the community has come together since then. She also says as Christians, it is their job to make the world better. The question is, how? After last Friday’s shooting, Scriven

other supplies such as canopies, water, ponchos and food in case students are stranded at school for a longer period. Both the backpacks and supplies closets have been paid for by the school’s PTSA. “The goal is to have enough food and water to take care of kids for three days,” Reith said.
CONSTANT COMMUNICATION
In addition to constant conversations and practice at schools, LWSD risk manager Scott Emry said they also partner with the local police departments in the district’s three cities: Redmond, Kirkland and Sammamish. He said he thinks the district needs to work in partnership with the local first responders because if they are not in communication about their respective emergency procedures, that could cause more of a hazard during an emergency. Emry said to help with communication between school districts and emergency response teams, the state has provided funding for Rapid Responder, which gives police and fire departments access to building plans, photos, utilities and other pertinent information they might need during an emergency. He said these plans were developed in partnership with the local police and fire departments so they provide exactly what information the teams would need. “It takes the guessing game out of the emergency — so to speak,” Emry said. He added that all of this information is secured and not accessible without a password. Emry also said he couldn’t provide specific emergency procedures and plans they have in place for security purpose.
Emry is head of the district’s safety advisory committee, which includes representatives from all three cities’ emergency response teams, and said they have regular conversations and meet every other month to discuss emergency preparedness, safety, security and other related issues. The most recent committee meeting was last Thursday, the day before the Sandy Hook shooting. “We meet regularly, we have partnerships, we have protocol,” Emry said. “We work hard to make sure we have an open relationship.” LWSD schools also have school resource officers (SROs) on campus, who are officers employed by the local police department. Emry said depending on the grade level, each school may have one officer on campus full time or the officer may split their time among a number of schools. Jim Bove, spokesperson for the Redmond Police Department, said they take a very direct approach in communicating with students and staff. “We have officers who serve as lunch buddies and we are in constant contact with administration throughout Redmond schools and preschools with crime-prevention information and we often do presentations for staff and students,” he said. Bove added that preparing for a situation similar to Sandy Hook is something they continuously talk about and train for, as well. “We work collaboratively with the school district throughout the year,” he said. “We have active shooter training at schools and other areas that may experience this type of event.”

Ingredients: 8 oz. vanilla wafers, finely crushed (2 cups of crumbs) 3 Tbs. granulated sugar 7 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted 3 8-oz. packages cream cheese, at room temperature 1 cup ricotta 2 Tbs. all-purpose flour Table salt 1-1/4 cups granulated sugar 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips 2 Tbs. finely grated orange zest 1 Tbs. pure vanilla extract 4 large eggs, at room temperature Confectioners’ sugar, for garnish

Directions Position a rack in the center of the oven and heat the oven to 375°F. In a medium bowl, stir together the vanilla wafer crumbs and 3 Tbs. granulated sugar. Mix in the melted butter until the crumbs are evenly moist and clump together slightly. Transfer the mixture to a 9-inch springform pan and press evenly onto the bottom and about 2 inches up the sides of the pan (to press, use plastic wrap or a flat-bottom measuring cup). Bake until the crust is fragrant and slightly darkened, 9 to 12 minutes. Let the pan cool on a rack. Lower the oven temperature to 300°F. In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese, ricotta, flour, and a pinch of table salt on medium speed, scraping down the sides of the bowl and the paddle frequently, until very smooth and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Make sure the cheese has no lumps. Add the 1-1/4 cups granulated sugar and continue beating until well blended and smooth. Add the chocolate chips, orange zest, and vanilla, and beat until blended, about 30 seconds. Add the eggs one at a time, beating just until blended. (Don’t overbeat once the eggs have been added or the cheesecake will puff too much and crack as it cools.) Pour the filling into the cooled crust and smooth the top. Bake at 300°F until the center jiggles like Jell-O when nudged, 55 to 65 minutes. The cake will be slightly puffed around the edges, and the center will still look moist. Set on a rack and cool completely. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled, at least 8 hours and up to 3 days. The cake can also be frozen at this point for up to 1 month (see make-ahead tip, below). Unclasp and remove the side of the springform pan and run a long, thin metal spatula under the bottom crust. Carefully slide the cake onto a flat serving plate. Garnish with confectioners’ sugar sifted over the cake and serve immediately. To cut, run a thin knife under hot water, wipe it dry, and cut the cake into slices, heating and wiping the knife after every slice. Make Ahead Tips To freeze, put the unmolded, cooled cake on a rimmed baking sheet in the freezer, uncovered, until the top is cold and firm; then wrap it in two layers of plastic and one layer of foil. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Tim Sharpe is angry that he couldn’t agree on an offer with the state to keep his Graces 5 healthy eating restaurant open longer. His foray into the business world with his wife, Katherine, was cut short last week after a 16-month run because the owners lost their business license due to unpaid taxes. According to a State of Washington Department of Revenue order revoking certificate of registration taped to the restaurant’s door at 8110 164th Ave. N.E. in downtown Redmond, the Sharpes owe $38,340.48 in unpaid taxes. Tim Sharpe said it was a tough go for small-business owners having to pay for food, rent and employees — and sales taxes, where they fell behind. “We’re taking a step back. I don’t think this is the end of Graces 5,” he said on Wednesday. “We’re going to close for a few months, take a deep breath, re-evaluate our situation and get our debt taken care of.” He added that they’ve met with restaurant consultants and may tweak their business plan and possibly relocate within the area, somewhere else in Washington or out of state. “We’ve learned a ton and I want to say ‘thank you’ to the people who had allergies and came to support the restaurant,” he said, adding that some people thought the Graces 5 menu was “strange.” They offered a menu of gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and low-sugar items for vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Tim Sharpe noted that people flocked to the restaurant and praised them for their healthy offerings. One woman loved the place so much that she became an employee. One junior high student brought two friends to Graces 5 for a birthday gathering and the glutenfree-eating trio all enjoyed their meals. “They had smiles from ear to ear,” he said.

Carol passed from this life peacefully on December 15, 2012. She was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts on December 4th 1936 to Dana and Alice (Oliver) Symonds. The majority of her childhood was spent in San Diego with her two younger sisters Donna and Alice. She later moved to the Seattle area where she spent the majority of her life. She has been described as Strong, Resilient, A Survivor, Accepting, Fiercely Loving, Hilarious, A Rock, The Matriarch, Best Friend, Wife, Sister, Auntie, Nana and Mom. Her life was full of greatness and wonder. She was a bank teller, worked in a bingo hall, traveled with the carnival (where she owned several booths), and ran a daycare for the last 23 years of her life. Her friendships were strong and everlasting. Carol Mae is survived by her loving husband of 33 years Jerry Askew, sister Donna Shinn (Kirkland) and Alice Vlcek (St. Louis, MO), 3 sons, Dana Chaffin (Redmond), Scott Chaffin (Colbert), and Tom Askew (Issaquah), 2 Step-Children Laura (Askew) Brantner (Durand, WI) and Steve Askew (Poulsbo), 11 grandchildren Jason, Tanner, Hanna, Melissa, Neil, Summer, Erika, India, Ivy, Lisa and Makayla, many cherished nieces and nephews and cousins and countless families whose children she cared for at Happy Days Day Care. Carol, to you everyone was family and you will be truly missed by so many. Choking on small objects is not the only thing that should concern parents of small children when it comes to the things that they put in their mouths. Students from Lake Washington High School (LWHS) collected two truckloads of food for Eastside families assisted by Redmond-based Hopelink for the holiday season and beyond. In addition, the school’s Loyalty Club raised $4,000. At the beginning of November, club members organized shifts at local markets to solicit contributions from the community in their goal of beating last year’s record of 12,000 pounds of food and household items they collected. While Hopelink doesn’t weigh everything immediately, Loyalty Club advisers and LWHS teachers Lindsay Roger and Nicole Massey believe that they’ll make their goal.

Puget Sound Energy makes it easier to find contractor recommendations online Puget Sound Energy (PSE) residential customers in need of a contractor for energy efficiency and home improvement projects can now generate their own contractor referrals online at PSE.com/ CAN through the energy company’s Contractor Alliance Network. The online selfreferral tool matches
customers with local contractors who specialize in the following services: heating and cooling, solar, water heating, natural gas conversion, weatherization, windows, home performance evaluation, roofing and generators. Once a customer submits project information, PSE automatically links independent
pre-qualified Contractor Alliance Network (formerly the Contractor Referral Service) members who specialize in the requested service. Member contractors then contact customers directly to expedite scheduling an appointment to provide the customer with an estimate for their project. PSE developed the
AAA projects year-end travel to increase AAA projects 93.3 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holidays, an increase of 1.6 percent over the 91.8 million people who traveled last year. This increase brings holiday travel figures to within half a million of the decade high mark seen during the 2006/2007 season. The year-end holiday travel period is defined as Dec. 22 to Jan. 1, 2013. AAA estimates the national average price of gasoline will slowly drop through the end of the year. Gas prices dropped
about 50 cents a gallon on average from September through early December, but remain at record highs for this time of year in some parts of the country. AAA does not expect gas prices to have a major impact on travel volume, but consumers could have more money to spend on holiday shopping, dining and entertainment if prices drop through December as expected. Approximately 90 percent of travelers (84.4 million) plan to travel by automobile this holiday season. This is a 1.3 percent increase over the
83.3 million people who traveled by auto last year. Air travel is expected to increase 4.5 percent as six percent of travelers or 5.6 million will take to the skies. Those traveling by air will find lower airfares according to AAA’s Leisure Travel Index. For the year-end holiday period the average lowest round-trip rate is $203 for the top 40 U.S. air routes, a 3 percent decrease from last year. Approximately 3.3 million travelers will choose other modes of transportation, including rail, bus and cruise ship.
