uzanne Popp — a prolific painter, rancher and director of infrastructure aid organization VillageSteps — has translated decades of travel to Africa into a semi-historical novel. “The Bride Price,” published Dec. 1, is the story of Myrna Chitundu, a young girl with a promising academic future and dreams of becoming a doctor. She is first girl to be accepted into the fictionalized Royal Academy, an English colonial school, and impresses her instructor with her aptitude and dedication. But her plans
are thrown away when she is raped and impregnated by a family friend. The man offers her family a lebola — a dowry — in exchange for her hand in marriage, which they accept. Her family is saved by the dowry and the loss of a mouth to feed. Despite that dark beginning, Popp insists the story is ultimately uplifting. The story begins in the 1960s and follows the girl, Myrna Chitundu, as she grows into a woman, becoming matriarch to three generations of family. The strength of a family fostered by her nurturing — Popp says the name Myrna translates to “comfort” in English — is

Buckley leases space to SoZo CrossFit By Daniel Nash Staff Writer
The old Buckley Fire Station may no longer house the city’s bravest citizens, but it will soon vie to hold the city’s strongest.
The City Council voted Dec. 11 to lease the space to SoZo CrossFit LLC in order to open a gym. CrossFit is an exercise program originally developed in Santa Cruz, Calif. by Greg Glassman. It is best

She decides she’s not going to be robbed of her sense of being. “Her husband, who seems like a real monster at the beginning of the story, you come to understand him a bit. As you read you learn he’s a warrior and a traditional man.” She built her story on the foundation of 40 years of diary entries, built and maintained over repeat trips — an average of one to two returns a year. Popp and husband Ken joined the Peace Corps after graduating from college. Their first destination was Ghana, where she taught English and African literature at a teachers training college, but they traveled overland to areas of Central, East and Northern Africa. Since that first trip, they have returned to the continent many times to build homes and lead classes in topics such as sex education, which can be a taboo subject in

But getting to that point was a torturous process of eliminating scenes and characters to which she had become attached. She also learned she will never again ask people to critique her first draft before it’s finished, she said. She related the story of one friend who said she loved the story except for the sex scenes, calling the book “ruined” by them. Popp considered the scenes vital and kept them in; but the experience still planted some measure of doubt that made the writing process that much harder. RULINGS FROM 1 be resolved by the Court of Appeals.” TRD can appeal the dismissal to the Court of Appeals. Still pending before the Court of Appeals is the Land Use Petition Act, or LUPA, appeal of the master planned development permits. Oishi ruled in favor of the city and YarrowBay in August dismissing the LUPA appeal petition. The ruling was appealed by TRD to the Court of Appeals. A hearing date has not been set, but TRD’s opening brief is due Jan. 10. In another legal decision regarding the developments, the city’s hearing examiner issued a recommendation of approval on YarrowBay’s preliminary plat. A plat is a map which shows the divisions of a piece of land shown to scale. According to a release from YarrowBay, the plat includes “782 residences, 190,000 square feet of commercial development, two large parks, trails, open space and one elementary school site for the Enumclaw School District. The plat is designed to accommodate single family, multi-family, commercial, retail and school uses.”

Centennial calendar By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer
A calendar honoring Enumclaw’s first 100 years will help pay for the coming centennial party. The brainchild of Wilkeson Mayor Donna Hogerhuis – who has longstanding ties to the Enumclaw community – the calendar is now on sale throughout the local business community. Each month, the calendar offers a glimpse into the city’s past with photos of such landmarks as the schoolhouse that sat at the corner of Griffin and Porter, the Lafromboise Hotel and the White River Lumber Company. In the center, there’s a 1910 map of the city. Hogerhuis, who grew up in Enumclaw and was the first president of the local historical society, proposed the concept and found willing partners in the city and the Chamber of Commerce. Sales of the calendar will be mutually beneficial. Half the

profits will go to the Enumclaw Centennial Fund and the other half will be earmarked for Wilkeson’s Coke Oven Park; Hogerhuis has a goal of seeing at least a few of the historic coke ovens restored to their original state as a way of linking to the small town’s mining heritage. Board honored directors’ association The White River School Board was among 23 entities throughout the state of Washington to be recognized as a Board of Distinction by the Washington State School Directors’ Association. The announcement was made during the WSSDA annual conference in Spokane. The recognition honors school boards that demonstrate effective use of the Washington School Board Standards. The standards, developed
and adopted by WSSDA in 2009, promote researched-based governance practices that lead to high levels of student and district achievement. This was the first year that the association separately honored a board in large, medium and small districts. Applications are evaluated by an independent review panel, and awards are given to those who receive at least an 80 percent score. Members of the White River board
Halvorsen to speak Sunday Retired Air Force Col. Gail S. Halvorsen will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday Dec. 30, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1316 Ryan Road in Buckley. The community is invited to come and hear his story of compassion and service before self. At the end of World War II, the United States found itself with her English and French allies trying to feed an entire city of over one million people by air, landing their planes into the bomb-riddled airport and
ravaged runway. During this ordeal, Halvorsen made a bold move that almost got him removed from his flight duties. One small act of kindness that boosted the morale of the German people — especially the children — and gave them a sense of hope and rejuvenation that someone truly cared for their success and well-being. This one small act of goodwill catapulted this young American soldier into the hearts of the German people, to the point that years later, they requested

that he be made the commander over the Tempelhof Air Base in West Berlin. And all it took was two sticks of gum that would change his life forever and those of the Berliners that he and countless other young soldiers helped to keep alive with rations of food and coal. At 92 years of age, Halvorsen is as spry and witty as ever and has a wonderful story to tell. A story of hope and a story of how genuine kindness and listening to that inner voice of doing something that may seem to be of little significance at the time, could change the hearts and minds of a former enemy and build a bridge of relations between the two countries for years to come.

Let’s begin with the premise I know to be true. Every male believes he knows best in all matters. Almost every male I have ever met believes that, except for me… I don’t believe it, I know I am right. Ask my daughter who thinks I am an idiot. Back to the premise. Males by their genetic nature believe they will buy Dennis Box the correct ChristEditor mas gift. Women, of course, have a slightly altered perception, which for any male who wants to survive is known as “the right and true one.” I believe I have found the solution to the donut that has fallen in the ointment (Beckley points out it’s usually a fly, but this is bigger) messing everything up for men. It is space. The distance from point A to point B, but to be all mathy and science-like, let’s call it space. Makes me sound smarter. That is it… a basic Christmas present relativity math

about 120,000 people, has been delivered to the White House. President Barack Obama called for “meaningful action” to prevent such shootings at a press conference. See, here’s the problem: now is not the time to “do something.” Give people time to rest, time to heal, then we can begin a discussion. When emotions are high is when people make knee-jerk decisions and those who would strip us of our freedoms will pounce. Do the words “Never let a good crisis go to waste” sound familiar? Here’s another one you may have heard recently: “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.” Here is the cold, hard truth my friends...criminals and crazy people don’t always follow the law. Being a
law-abiding citizen takes effort. One must first acknowledge that a law exists, that it applies to them and then one must make the conscience choice to obey said law. Ban every gun, label them all “assault weapons” and it will make no difference whatsoever. Hey, I have an idea, let’s create more “gun free zones” that will keep us all safe from those criminals and crazy people right? But have you ever stopped to consider why it is that nearly all these mass causality incidents (PC in action here, folks) occur in these “gun free zones”? Could it be, ya think, that those criminals and crazy people have figured out that “gun free zone” means “target-rich environment” with no threat to them?

U.S. Constitution tempered an extreme America has had periods in its history when it went to extremes. Usually one extreme period was followed by the opposite extreme. Fortunately for America we had leaders who understood how to soften our tendency for extremism. This pattern of balancing our wild fluctuations was laid from the very beginning of our country and continues to the present. That first extreme came after the American Revolution. Americans were disenchanted with authority vested in one man — the king of England, and his royal governors. As a result, Americans created a government called the Articles of Confederation that lasted from 1777-

Had we been closer to Europe, some greedy monarch would have swooped in and grabbed parts or our entire nation for his conquest during this period of national weakness. As it was, because of the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, disgruntled farmers in western Massachusetts, angry over high and unjust taxation by the state government, rebelled. Revolutionary war hero Daniel Shays led them. He formed an army and tried to take over the state government. He failed,

100 Years on the Plateau! Jack Cloves Smith is shown here working at the Carbonado mine, operating an electric motor, circa 1936-37. Electric motors like this one were typically used to pull timber or coal cars into position or perhaps into the shop for mechanical repairs. The copper power line is visible where the wooden arm extends upward to connect. Jack was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Kansas. His parents moved to Carbonado shortly thereafter. He started working in the coal mines of Carbonado, perhaps around 1930. He married Pauline Loss, the daughter of Raymond Mundy Loss, after whom a road near Buckley is named. Jack and Pauline had two children, Carolee and a son, Jack Jr. Smith, who died May 3, 1944, when a large rock in the gangway of the Wilkeson Products Company mine fell and crushed him. His daughter Carolee and her husband Miles Moergeli were both born in Enumclaw. This photo comes courtesy of Robert Peloli, a retired coal miner who was a contemporary of Smith. The problem is very simple: Women always tell men, in one way or another, what they want for Christmas. This month, as we celebrate the holiday season with our pets and families, we want to recognize the importance of the safe and caring environment you provide for your furry family members, share some insight on the many dogs and cats in need of adoption locally and throughout the states, and introduce new ways you can help support our pet community in 2013. Every year, approximately seven million dogs and cats enter animal shelters nationwide and nearly four million of those are euthanized. That means every day, nearly 11,000 pets are put down. Simply put, for every two
dogs that enter your local animal shelter, one of them is killed off merely because there is no one there to adopt them. To offset this daunting problem, there has been a growing emphasis to show those looking to add a four-legged companion to their family that adoption should be their first option. There are all types of animals out there without a home, every breed imaginable, from young puppies to senior-aged pets. More often than not, the age and breed of the pet you are looking for is out there, homeless, looking for a new home of their own. The county animal shelters
have limited resources and are only able to do so much. To help with the heavy burden of finding new homes for the many pets in need, rescue groups have emerged to help bridge the gap between those looking for a new pet and those pets who are in need of a home. In 2012, Buckley Veterinary Hospital teamed up with an emerging rescue group based out of Covington. Left Behind K-9 Rescue is launching its rescue operation Jan. 1 and the group selected Buckley Veterinary Hospital to be its official veterinarian. Cofounders Jeff and Molly Boyd have been taking their own dogs to BVH since their first adoption in 2007. Left Behind K-9 Rescue is a registered nonprofit corporation of Washington state. The group is made up of a collection of volunteers. There are no paid employees, meaning all dollars go directly to the help the dogs in need. Every rescue dog the group
Guide to adopting a family pet Adopting a pet can be fun and challenging. King County provides the following tips on finding and caring for a new family pet
Finding the right pet
Think carefully about what you and your family want from a pet. They can
be a quiet companion, an active playmate or a family friend. Every breed of dog and cat is unique and each individual pet is different. When choosing a pet, consider these questions. • How much time do I have to spend caring for a pet?
• Do I want an active or passive pet? • How much of my income can I spend on a pet? Pet adoption counselors are available at the Pet Adoption Center to help you choose a companion that suits your lifestyle.
takes in will first visit Buckley Veterinarian Hospital where they will be updated on vaccinations and receive a comprehensive exam before entering their foster homes. While in foster, the dog will be given a chance to live a normal life in the care of a loving family while a permanent home is found. As with any nonprofit, the support of the community will play a vital role in the success of these rescue projects. Left Behind K-9 Rescue is currently looking for families who would like to sign up to become foster homes for their rescue dogs. With the lack of space in the animal shelters, foster homes provide temporary care for a homeless dog while they are waiting to get adopted. It allows for the foster parent to learn more about the dog’s personality, likes and dislikes so they can be better matched with the right forever home. Ultimately, the foster homes help save lives and provide a rewarding experience for the

A pet adoption counselor or animal services officer will be at the adoption center to help you choose the right pet. They are familiar with animal behavior, basic health care, customer service, and human-animal bonds. To make the adoption process faster and easier, before you come to the Pet Adoption Center, try to do two things: Complete an
adoption application, available on our website at www. kingcounty.gov/pets If you rent or lease your residence, obtain written proof from your landlord that you are allowed a pet, and bring it with you to the adoption center. After you select a pet you are interested in, we will conduct an adoption appointment, which is often on the same day you select your pet. The pet adoption counselor will: • Arrange for spaying/ neutering of your pet, if it has not already been done, • Help you understand current laws and regulations .

Hornets drop a thriller at home By Dennis Box Editor
The Hornets boys came up short Thursday at home against Lakes falling 49-52. The boys played big in their second South Puget Sound League 3A game of the season coming from behind to take the lead more than once. Enumclaw was down by one, 24-23 at the half and fell back by seven in the third before mounting a surge to take a 36-35 lead. The teams continued to battle down the fourth quarter stretch, with both teams trying to capitalize on fast break opportunities. The game came down to a few second and a few chances at the end of the game.
With 15 seconds remaining and Lakes leading, Enumclaw stole the ball during a Lakes stall drill. After a time out, Enumclaw had a chance to tie the game at the foul line, but the basketball gods decided it wasn’t the Hornets’ night. Despite the loss, the battle in the paint by Drake Rademacher and Jr. Condon showed a Enumclaw team that is on the verge of some big games. Perry Rockwood’s drives gives the team a needed dimension and he was leading scorer with 14. Rademacher hit 11 and Bryce Peterson added nine with Condon putting in seven. Tony Chynoweth scored six.

Saying thank you for a great idea About 10 years ago, I received a phone call from Tom Poe, our local diamond and fine-jewelry store owner. He asked if he could send me a packet of information, along with an invitation to a meeting at a private residence here in town. My wife Lorrie and I went and we met other people, some we knew. We all had one thing in common, that we all had some knowledge of the timber industry and logging and the people who make it happen and moreover to discuss how to honor the men who gave their lives to this industry. As the meeting progressed,
Tom unveiled his idea to accomplish this. After taking a good look at the information and drawings and Tom’s salesmanship, I was all in and hooked. I did a lot of thinking about this whole product. I got to realize that logging, along with farming, is what put our city on the map and helped keep it there. So this needs to be done right. Later, Tom and I were talking and I told him the one big concern I had is that I didn’t want to drive by this for the rest of my life and be embarrassed that we fell short on our effort. I have always been proud to be part of the logging industry and I wanted to be proud of this project that is to honor these men. Now, I’ve known Tom for a lot of years and I should have known better than to worry. One of the things I like about Tom, is when he takes on something like this, it’s “full head of steam and don’t sweat the torpedoes” mindset. When we got to look at the final plans and what it was going to take, my wife Lorrie said, if
you guys can raise that kind of money and get the property that Tom wants, you will never have to do anything but be proud and I agreed. So Tom and all of the people that were involved in this great monument to logging and the men who gave their all to make it happen, thank you all for the great job you did. So now that three years have passed since the dedication and some evenings when the lights are shining on it, and I see people who have taken the time to read some of the names of the men dedicated there, I am not only pleased but proud to have been asked to be a part of this great idea. Tom, there are many ways to say thank you, but from the bottom of my heart and soul, thank you for an idea and job so very, very well done.

Perhaps the best hidden gem on all of the Plateau sits literally right at its edge: Victor Falls in Bonney Lake. Located off of Rhodes Lake Road, the 70-foot veil of water is where Fennel Creek in Bonney Lake empties into the Puyallup River below. Beneath the falls, you can see the layers created by the Osceola and Electron Mudflows from previous eruptions of Mount Rainier thousands of years ago. But while the falls themselves are on public property, they are not easily accessible except through private land, making them a somewhat difficult beauty to behold unless you want to tromp through woods, but for those willing to make the trip, there is no doubt that Victor Falls easily takes the cake as this area’s best and most beautiful hidden gem. Could it be that they are in reality cowards that seek out the weak and unarmed? I can think of some meaningful action which would prevent such incidents, can you? When Israelis were faced with attacks in their schools they did what any clear-thinking people would do — they armed their teachers and school staff. It’s a funny thing...when criminals, crazies and terrorists start dying (instead of their intended victims) the number of attacks drops very quickly and then all but stops…hmmm… So, by all means let’s have a debate, but not a debate over how many more ineffective gun laws we can come up with, but rather one on how to really stop these tragedies from occurring. In closing here’s another quote you’re probably not familiar with: “The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference

Because of Shays’ Rebellion, the leaders of each of the 13 states decided to convene in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 to create a stronger constitution. Understanding the swings from fear of tyranny under a strong leader to fears of anarchy as demonstrated by Shays’ Rebellion, they decided on a middle course, balancing authority with freedom, and responsibility with liberty. perspective. Governmental power would be divided into three parts: Congress, the President, and the Court. Checks and balances would maintain an equilibrium keeping any one branch from getting too powerful. The reason for the current tug of war between the President and the Republican House over the “fiscal cliff” issue is due to these checks and balances. The President only has the power to persuade and cajole and veto. Congress decides what the law will be. Another example of checks and balances will be whether the Supreme Court will declare the Defense of Marriage Act regarding gay marriages constitutional or not in its next session. Additionally, some powers would be delegated exclusively to the states, like marriage and education, while other powers would reside with the national government, like waging war, and regulating trade. Over the years, the federal government has by virtue of necessity encroached on the rights of the states and of Congress. One example of this has been the need to enforce Civil Rights protections for African-Americans during the 1950s and 1960s over segregated schools in the South. Another example is the right of Congress to declare war. That provision has only been used five times in our history, whereas there were over 120 conflicts where no war was ever declared. The most recent were the bombing of Libya, and the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. As you can see the founders of this nation were very concerned with having a government that had a natural gyroscope where over time the extremes of human nature would be mitigated and adjusted to a changing society. For all our faults as a nation, this tendency to right itself through a very messy democratic process has served this nation well in the long run. No wonder Thomas Jefferson called the founding fathers of our Constitution demigods for their far-sightedness and understanding of human nature. There’s hope for our polarized nation in the long term.

Thank you Youth’s Leadership expresses its deepest thanks and appreciation to Anita Carlson and the wonderful people at Windermere Real Estate in Enumclaw for all their work and kindness to our organization throughout the process of selling the property.
