The Oct. 3 edition reported Enumclaw’s Samuel Shane Alvidrez, 51, pleaded guilty to attempted rape of a child in the third degree. Alvidrez, who operated a martial arts studio on Cole Street at the time of his May 2011 arrest, had originally been charged with two counts of child rape. A spokesman for the King County Prosecutor’s Office said an agreement on a lesser charge was reached, in part, to spare his young victim from having to testify.

• The great winter event of January 2012 will be remembered for its beautiful blanket of white, the subsequent sheets of ice and, finally, the shattering sound of tree limbs crashing throughout the Plateau. All that combined to toss Enumclaw, Buckley and nearby neighborhoods into a state of near-paralysis. Power outages were the talk of every town, schools were cancelled four consecutive days and things turned ugly enough to prompt the opening of “warming centers” to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. • A local couple delivering a copy of The Courier-Herald Jan. 10 experienced a harrowing ordeal when they were yelled at, shot at and chased from the countryside to the steps of the Enumclaw Police Department. The couple – who have a motor route – were delivering newspapers shortly after 5 p.m. Following their normal schedule, they were in the vicinity of 424th Street Southeast and 228th Avenue Southeast when they were suddenly confronted. A pickup blocked their path and a man stepped out, walked to the couple’s Toyota and started hollering. According to a King County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman, the wife then made the wise decision to flee, easing their vehicle past the pickup and heading out of harm’s way. That’s when they heard a shot and felt a bullet strike their automobile.

The male’s identity was entered into the Washington and National crime information centers’ databases and an attempt-to-locate notification was sent to surrounding agencies. The case was forwarded to BPD’s investigations division for followup. DUI: At 1:47 a.m. Dec. 20, an officer was dispatched to a possible drunk driver. Once behind the suspect vehicle, the officer initiated a stop on Pearl Street at Jefferson Avenue when he saw the vehicle travel into the oncoming lane while turning a corner. The driver performed some voluntary field sobriety tests, and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. WRONG LANE: At 8:13 p.m. Dec. 21, an officer was patrolling Ryan Road when he witnessed a vehicle turn a corner wide and travel into the oncoming lane. Half the vehicle’s width
had crossed over the newly painted (and visible) double yellow line; it traveled for some distance that way, even as traffic approached, the officer noted in his report. He initiated a traffic stop, during which the driver refused to submit to field sobriety testing. He was placed under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. SHOTS FIRED?: At 9:55 p.m. Dec. 21, officers were dispatched to check on a report of shots fired near the intersection of Ryan Road and Spiketon Road. The officers checked the area, but were unable to locate where the shots were coming from. STOLEN DIRT BIKE: At 10:30 a.m. Dec. 19, a citizen reported her son’s dirt bike had been taken. The bike was stored at a Hill Street address and the property owner notified the family their bike was missing. The back fence of the property had been cut and there were tire marks where the

State Patrol Alcohol ignition interlocks in Washington will soon have a feature designed to prevent others from performing breath tests for the driver. Starting January 1, 2013, a camera will snap a picture every time the machine is used, verifying that the driver is the person who took the test. Interlocks are required
on the vehicles of those who’ve been accused or convicted of impaired driving. The machine requires a legal breath sample from the driver before allowing a car to start. “We’ve had cases where impaired drivers asked passengers, friends or even children to take the test for them,” said Lt. Rob Sharpe, commander of the Washington State Patrol’s Impaired Driving Section. “We’ve even heard stories of people trying to use portable air compressors to take the test.” Failures or attempts to tamper with the device get recorded by the machine’s software. The company which leases the interlocks downloads the information and in turn contacts the State Patrol. Drivers can lose their Ignition Interlock License by attempting to fool the machine, and the photographs will provide new accountability for those trusted with the license.

These signs include: • Frequent “close calls” or near-crashes • Unexplained dents or scrapes on vehicles, fences, mailboxes, garage doors, etc. • Getting lost, even in familiar locations • Difficulty seeing or following traffic signals, road signs and pavement markings • Slower responses to unexpected situations, trouble moving the driving foot from the gas to the brake, and confusing the two pedals

tiate the conversation,” said Jodi Olshevski, a gerontologist and assistant vice president at The Hartford. “Research indicates that 50 percent of married drivers prefer to hear about driving concerns from their spouses first, then doctors and finally adult children. Whoever initiates the conversation should have a strong rapport with the older driver. ““Whoever it is should be empathetic, armed with facts about her driving and able to offer ideas for alternative transportation if needed,” Olshevski said. Avoid bringing up the topic of driving during family gatherings. Instead, look for a quiet, private time when all parties involved will have privacy and minimal distractions. If it’s time to initiate a conversation with a parent or spouse about driving, AARP Driver Safety’s “We Need to Talk” seminar can help. Developed based on information created jointly by The Hartford and MIT AgeLab, the free, online seminar helps caregivers and those with an older loved one initiate productive and caring conversations about driving safety. To take the free seminar, visit www.aarp.org/weneedtotalk, and to download or order a free guidebook, visit www.thehartford.com/lifetime.While many older Americans are staying safe on the roads and driving longer than ever before, for some, health-related changes in vision, hearing, flexibility or cognitive function can make them less safe behind the wheel. With planning, preparation and sensitivity, families can help make the transition from being a driver to being a passenger a bit easier for older drivers and those who love them.

As we age, and watch our loved ones grow older, it’s important to think about – and plan for – a time when we may no longer be able to drive. But how do we decide when it’s time to transition from driver to passenger? In our busy suburban communities driving is essential to an independent lifestyle, and the decision to stop driving is a sensitive, personal one. In addition to creating practical challenges, giving up driving may stir feelings of anger, frustration, isolation and depression, so it is not to be taken lightly. With the significance of driving in mind, family members can help older drivers make the transition from driver to passenger. But how do you initiate the difficult conversation? The experts at AARP Driver Safety and The Hartford offer some advice. First, help older drivers stay safe behind the wheel for as long as possible. Adult children can help aging parents regularly maintain their vehicles. And if it’s time for a new car, adult children can help identify choices with new technologies that can enhance safe driving, like reverse monitoring systems. Older drivers can brush up on their driving skills with AARP Driver Safety’s course, which is specifically designed to help people 50 and older refresh their driving skills. To find a classroom course near you, call (888) 227-7669, or visit www.aarp.org/findacourse; or sign up for an online course. Courses are available in English or Spanish. T
he end of December is a time for resolutions, reviews and renewals so resolve to start a garden notebook, mark up your calendar or take more garden photos if you want to chart the improvements and failures of your gardening experiments. Here’s a few ideas for ways to make 2013 a celebration of all things green and growing: Resolve to start growing your own food. This one act can be as simple as buying a potted rosemary plant for the kitchen counter and using more fresh herbs in your everyday life. Here in Western Washington it is simple to grow cool season crops like lettuce, peas, cabbage, kale and Swiss chard. You don’t even

known to absorb and clean indoor pollutants. I vote for the attractive and hard-to-kill peace lily or spathiphyllum because this houseplant adapts to low light and will bloom with white, flag-like spaths or leaf bracts. If you go away for a few weeks and your peace lily looks limp and dead on your return, cut it back, add some water and it will revive and keep growing. Other air cleaning houseplants to add to your home include heart leaf philodendrons, English ivy, spider plants, dracaena and snake plant. Resolve to cut back on your garbage – start a compost pile. You don’t need a lot of room to recycle a lot of garbage. Just find a four foot space on the ground and dig in. Set aside a pile of soil and layer your kitchen waste and pruning crumbs into the hole, covering with a few shovels of the soil from the nearby pile. with brown material (soil, sawdust, brown leaves) then letting it sit and rot. In six months or less you’ll have compost. Resolve to rebel from convention – and bring back the bees. Becoming a flamboyant, rebellious and adventurous gardener has many benefits but the latest buzz is about what your experiments in growing can do for the birds, bees and the butterflies. The more diverse the plant material we grow in our gardens the more likely our local wild life will survive. This year, promise to try a new climbing vine, plant a tree, add more perennials and buy a blooming baskets filled with flowers you’ve never grown before. We need gardens full of early bloomers, late bloomers, trees, shrubs, native plants and exotic new comers that will provide nectar for bees, homes for birds and foliage for the caterpillars that turn into butterflies and moths. Life began in a garden, so celebrate the New Year and just keep growing.

Contemplation: An alternative worship experience H
ave you ever considered that we all have the same amount of time? Time, as we know it, is a human concept. Sure, we could tell the changing of one day to another or the changing of seasons even if we were not so accustomed to our 24 hour days, our seven day weeks. But we are all tied to time; I am sure that everyone who reads this article feels the pinch of days too packed with work, appointments, home obligations and family needs. Then, what about the time we try to set aside to draw closer to God? I admit to praying on the run: snatches of prayers in the car, at work or at

s 2013 approaches I like to clear mental notebook, which is very short, of all my crabby scribbling. Here are a few news and notes from all over the place. • Names of sports teams are one issue I need to address. I have been hearing some jeering from Oregon fans about how wonderful their college football team. You know: – Ducks this, Beavers that… yeah, yeah. Dennis Box This year has Editor been bleep-blop in the universe. This is a very technical scientific term. Kind of like a black divot in the golf course of the universe. Yes the Duckies and Beaverettes appear to be pretty hot stuff. Here is a simple solution to fix our divot. Any state with dopey football team names like Ducks and Beavers cannot be better than Huskies and Cougars. We win by virtue of the fact we have the cooler names. Divot fixed. Now don’t well all feel better. I know I do.

Letters A lump of coal with meaning The staff of Palmer Coking Coal Company would like to thank your readers for their donations to Vine Maple Place. We were able to raise $368 from those who picked up gift-wrapped “Lumps of Coal” for Christmas giving to friends and family. Some of the donations came from truck drivers and retail customers who purchase soda pop at our retail yard in Black Diamond, 100 percent of which goes to support Vine Maple Place, a locally based 501(3)(c) charitable organization providing hope, help, and housing to homeless children and their families. Bill Kombol, manager Palmer Coking Coal Company
Pro-gun writer missed the mark In response to the letter by Mr. Personius last week I have several comments. Firstly, there is an
excellent website run by the Second Amendment Foundation at saf. org; this site has a page related to “bogus and fake quotations” by the Founding Fathers. In part, it states: “Creating bogus quotes is wrong and counterproductive. It harms the rest of the message sent by any person utilizing a proven fake quote, even if the person is unintentionally and unknowingly repeating a madeup statement. Perhaps the most ‘infamous’ bogus saying attributed to a Founding Father is the ‘liberty teeth’ quote alleged to have been said by George Washington. One version of this tale reads: ‘The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.’” We don’t need made-up facts designed to excite a knee jerk. Secondly, According to all available verifiable evidence, teachers and staff in Israel do not carry guns. In fact it is extremely difficult for anyone in Israel to get a permit (required) to carry a gun. Contrary to Mr. LaPierre of the NRA, there have not been “lots of school shootings” in Israel; in fact, only two in the last 40 years and those were terrorist attacks. Approximately 170,000 total permits have been issued. That’s about 2.5 percent of the population of Israel compared to our 30 percent.
Finally, I would like to point out the NRA talking point, repeated by Mr. Personius, that “now is not the time to do something” has been the omnipresent mantra used by the association everytime there is a mass shooting. The NRA is an organization devoted not to its members, but rather devoted to the firearm and accessory industry and keeping people buying weaponry is its primary goal. Now will never be the time for the NRA, but it is the time for our society to get serious about a problem that has no single solution but that must be talked about rationally, without shopworn talking points from either side of the debate. My grandfather Elfers loved to argue, and on one occasion when I was about 10 years old, I saw him get a glint in his eye, and raise his voice as he talked about politics. I, too, became interested in politics and later ran for public office. I, too, love to argue and discuss what’s going on in the world. That’s partly why I write this column. My grandfather Hurly died when I was only 1 year old. I never knew him, yet his life and choices left a legacy that still inf luences my thinking today. As I think about my grandfathers and their influence on me, I understand that we all leave an example for younger generations whether we realize it or not. By discussing my ancestors’ legacies, I hope you will reflect on your own past and gain a deeper understanding of the people who shaped you. My mother’s father was a judge in eastern Montana, and served on the state Supreme Court for a time. He never went to college. Instead he went to Washington D.C. and worked for a senator, reading the senator’s law books to learn the law and then pass the bar exam. He put his name on a shingle and hung it above his office door in
Politics in Focus Richard Elfers Columnist
Glasgow, Mont., where he practiced law, eventually running for and winning a judgeship. Because of his influence, his son, my Uncle Robert, practiced law in that same town until his death last year at the age of 89. My Aunt Jean, Uncle Robert’s sister, married a man who was elected as prosecuting attorney for 30 years. Their emphasis on learning and studying and aiming high set the tone for my own life that I absorbed subconsciously as a child. My grandmother Hurly had the vision to get the cousins to spend time with each other every year to develop connections. At her promptings, my mother’s family met each summer at Whitefish Lake, Mont., for a family reunion. My grandmother knew that those connections would form a foundation for relationships in adulthood. In
retrospect, I’ve found that if you don’t connect with your relatives as a child you probably won’t have relationships with them as adults. Grandma Hurly also kept active into her 70s and 80s; taking courses at Montana State University and entering advertising jingle contests, winning prizes for her efforts. She and her daughter, Aunt Jean, taught me to keep active your whole life, and to keep exercising when you get old. My grandmother lived to 90, and my aunt lived to 96. From my own father I learned to get up every weekday morning to go to your job whether you felt like it or not. He also used to study for his electrical engineering degree after work every night. As a result, I find myself studying and writing into the evening hours as well. There are other relatives I could mention who taught me lessons about life, both by the good they did, and by the mistakes they made. Can’t you do the same thing with your family and from the people who influenced you? With that thought in mind, I’ve considered perhaps pushing myself a little bit harder. Don’t we want to leave a legacy of growing and developing into the best that we can be, not only for ourselves, but also for those not yet born?

capes my younger cohorts. Age brings a special knowledge about capes After considerable contemplation on my part (about 10 seconds), I have decided it is important
to establish I am the one who gets to be right about sports, Skippy and Stephen A. and Dr. Strange and who my daughter should date. I do admit that there will
be times in 2013 when it will appear I am not right. I think we all now know the answers to this dilemma. It is the bleep-blop in the universe, the black
divot and that means I get to be right. Apparent divots in the universe do happen, but it all just vanities. Read Ecclesiastes and have a Happy New Year.

• There are very few TV shows I watch beyond movies older than I am. I hate all reality shows. Reality is bad enough without broadcasting it on multiple channels. However, in the morning before work I do like to listen to First Take, the debate sports show between Skippy Bayless and Stephen A. Smith moderated by Cari Champion. The presidential debates would have been much more entertaining and enlightening if it had been more like Skippy and Stephen A. Just imagine the poll numbers if Mitt Romney and Barack Obama were yelling at each other about the replacement refs and the hot call giving the Seahawks the win over Green Bay. Now there is a fiscal cliff that matters. I have taken some undue criticism from some sports writers because I like these guys on First Take. Usually this is criticism from a newsroom sports authorities who couldn’t pick a winner with help from God. Let me tell you what would happen if God did try to help a sports writer, “He’s God. What does he know about sports?” I always try to tell my newsroom staff that God is sort of like an editor. He knows more than everyone except my know-it-all daughter, which seem unfair to me. That is some sort of problem with the universe I have no technical term for yet. Another issue I have received considerable derision about in the CourierHerald newsroom about the single most important issue facing our society today. Could Superman beat Dr. Strange? I have proven through superior logic that the magic amulet would put Dr.
Strange over the top decisively. And let’s not forget the most important point in my winning argument. Dr. Strange has the coolest cape. We have gone over this many times, but it es-

winter. When you open a MoneyMarket Extra account linked to a personal checking account, you’ll earn 1.00% APY through 2013. Simply open your account at any Union Bank branch in Washington by January 31, 2013.
So stop by your local branch today, call 800-818-6060, or visit unionbank.com/rate.
To get 1.00% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) through December 31, 2013, open a MoneyMarket Extra account with a minimum opening deposit of $10,000, with funds not presently on deposit with Union Bank, and a linked Union Bank personal checking account (minimum $100 to open) by January 31, 2013. 1.00% APY is based on maintaining a combined balance of $10,000 within the MoneyMarket Extra account and the linked personal checking account. Maintain a daily ledger balance of $10,000 in your MoneyMarket Extra account and we’ll waive the regular monthly service charge of $15. Interest rate tiers are based on the combined balance of the linked personal checking account and MoneyMarket Extra account and applied to the MoneyMarket Extra balance. 1.00% APY valid through December 31, 2013, for combined balances of $10,000 - $499,999. For other balances and after December 31, 2013, rates are variable and subject to change daily without notice. Rates as of November 15, 2012, are 0.01% APY for combined balances of $0 - $2,499; 0.05% APY for combined balances of $2,500 - $9,999; 1.00% APY for combined balances of $10,000 - $24,999, $25,000 - $49,999, $50,000 - $99,999, and $100,000 - $499,999; 0.25% APY for combined balances of $500,000 - $999,999 and $1,000,000 or more. Fees may reduce earnings. If the personal checking account is closed or becomes inactive, the MoneyMarket Extra account will convert to a regular MoneyMarket account, which may have lower rates than a MoneyMarket Extra account. Other charges, such as NSF and overdraft fees of $33 per item, may be assessed. Available only for personal accounts opened over the phone or at OR and WA branches. Don’t foget to ‘Tree Cycle’ King County reminds you to ring in the new year by doing a good deed for the environment: Recycle your old Christmas tree, instead of throwing it in the garbage. Trees – minus the tinsel and other decorations – can be chipped into landscaping material or ground finer into a composting soil amendment. Diverting trees from the landfill also saves room for what really needs to be there. • Fundraising events: Many community groups sponsor Christmas tree-cycling fundraising events, including scouting troops, churches and others. For a small donation, they will deliver your tree to a commercial recycler. Look for neighborhood flyers for recycling events. For more information, call the King County Solid Waste Division, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 206-296-4466 or toll free, at 1-800-325-6165, ext. 6-4466, TTY Relay: 711 or visit the website at http://your.kingcounty. gov/solidwaste/index.asp.

Public hearing on land transfer On Jan. 8, 2013, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Enumclaw School Board will hold a hearing to receive comment from interested persons and parties regarding the Enumclaw School District’s proposal to transfer certain territory from the
Tahoma School District to the Enumclaw District. The hearing will be held in the gymnasium of the Black Diamond Elementary School, 25314 Baker St., Black Diamond, Washington. The territory in question is a
Wednesday, January 2, 2013 • The Enumclaw Courier-Herald • Page 15 roughly 35-acre portion, slated for commercial use, of developer Yarrow Bay’s Villages and Lawson Hills master planned developments (MPDs). Other portions of the same developments are already in the Enumclaw School District and are slated substantially for residential use. The Enumclaw School Board believes the entire related developments should be in the Enumclaw District, in part so that future property tax revenues from the commercial portions of the developments will
help to support the costs of public school education of students living in the 6,000+ new residential units of the MPDs. Persons who wish to speak at the hearing (two minute maximum for individuals; three minute maximum for representatives of groups) may sign up in advance by emailing (diana_ aaby@enumclaw.wednet.edu) or calling 360-802-7102, or may sign in upon arrival at the hearing on Jan. 8, 2013. Speakers will be heard in order of sign-up, unless it appears that there are more speakers
than may be heard in 2 hours, in which case the Enumclaw School Board president reserves the option to take speakers out of order so as to assure that representatives of various points of view are heard. • Persons or parties who wish to communicate their views regarding the proposal, but who are not able to attend the Jan. 8, 2013 hearing, may provide their input by email, through Jan. 8, 2013 to diana_aaby@enumclaw. wednet.edu using subject line “Proposed transfer of territory.”
