Water main break leaves 16 homes without water BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@kirklandreporter.com
A Kirkland Public Works crew worked long into the night Dec. 20 to repair a water main break that left 16 homes without water and two flooded. The water main at the 114000 block of N.E. 90th St. was repaired between 2:30-3 a.m. Friday morning. But the break’s cause is still unknown. Kirkland spokeswoman Marie Stake said Public Works crews repaired the road Friday morning, which was dug up Thursday night to access the break. Traffic was able to get by. “Sometimes ‘time will tell’ as to the extent of
damage to a road following a water main break,” Stake said. Kirkland Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Haschak said Thursday night two houses were flooded one with 6 inches, the other with 12-18 inches of water. Haschak said water was coming up around both sides of the roads when firefighters arrived and they had to divert water from the street. It took about 30 minutes to shut down the water main and finish pumping out the houses, he said. Crews also woke up homeowners to alert them of the flooding and to make sure their homes

weren’t damaged as well. “Sometimes in these situations a water main break affects other homes when the line needs to be flushed to get the air out,” Stake said. “Such effects include ‘dirty water’ or changes in the pressure.” Although the break is
still under investigation, Haschak notes “apparently some work with the water system was being done earlier” on Thursday. Residents who are experiencing issues can call the Public Works Maintenance Center at 425-587-3900.
A second Kirkland Wells Fargo Bank was robbed within two days on Dec. 20. Three men entered the bank at 6615 132nd Ave. N.E. wearing loose clothing and something covering their faces. Ayn S. Dietrich, a spokeswoman for the FBI, said two suspects jumped over the teller counter and one stayed in the lobby as they took an undisclosed amount of money. Dietrich said her reports indicate there was no implication the men had weapons. The men said to be between 5 feet, 7 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches and approximately 200 pounds took off in a vehicle. Kiro 7 reported the Chevrolet Astro was
recovered at a nearby apartment complex and was impounded by police, however Dietrich would not confirm those details. Kirkland police searched the apartment complex, the report continues, but believe the robbers got away in another vehicle. No one was injured during the robbery. The robbery was the second to occur within two days in Kirkland (see page 6). However, Dietrich says the FBI does not think the two are connected. “The M.O. (mode of operation) was very different,” Dietrich said. “Last night was one guy and he did have a weapon.” Dietrich said both were verbal demands as opposed to communication through a note.

Top 10 most–read stories of 2012
S
tories about home invasions, deaths and child rapists are among the most-read headlines this year – but not all of the Kirkland Reporter’s articles touched on gloom and doom. The Kirkland community’s efforts to help the homeless and victims of domestic violence, sprinkled with new business ventures and celebratory events such as SummerFest, often graced the front page of this weekly newspaper. Here are the top 10 most-read stories on our newspaper’s website, www.kirklandreporter.com, according to Google Analytics: 1. “Missing boy’s father believes Sky Metalwala could be with third party”(Jan. 2012): Many theories have been floated on the whereabouts of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala. The boy allegedly went missing in November 2011 while in the custody of his mother, Redmond resident Julia Biryukova. Solomon Metalwala (Sky’s father), of Kirkland, and his attorney Clay Terry spoke out with their own theories as to where the boy may be and took action. 2. “Brothers die in Kirkland motorcycle accident after falling many feet”(Sept. 2012): A motorcycle with brothers Eldon and Gerald Lutz was headed north in the parking lot of the Totem Lake neighborhood park-and-ride when the motorcycle hit the curb at a high rate of speed and fell approximately 15-20 feet down onto N.E. 132nd Street. One of the brothers was then struck by a passing vehicle in the westbound lane. Both later died at Harborview Hospital from their injuries. 3. “Kirkland woman killed by suspected drunk driver on Juanita Drive, Bellevue man in ICU”(Aug. 2012): One woman died and four others were hospitalized the night of Aug. 7 after a suspected drunk driver crossed the center line near N.E. 120th Street on Juanita Drive in Kirkland and struck a car head on. The accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. near Fire Station 25. 4. “Kirkland convicted child rapist charged with attempting to rape girlfriend’s daughter”(July 2012): Ryan D. Firoved was charged
with attempted rape of a child after being caught in a sting trying to have sexual contact with his girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter. 5. “Kirkland woman makes first court appearance for suspected DUI homicide on Juanita Drive” (Aug. 2012): Kelly Hudson made her first appearance in King County Superior Court after being arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and assault. Hudson is suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol, crossing the center line on Kirkland’s Juanita Drive and killing Joyce Parsons, 81, of Kirkland and injuring three other people. 6. “Man dies at N.E. 85th exit, northbound I- 405” (Aug. 2012): A 44-year-old man from Vancouver, Wash., died in a one-car accident Aug. 27 on Interstate 405 at exit 18 in Kirkland. Gay people who want to adopt should prove they don’t have AIDS Now that the State of Washington (i.e. King County) has voted to approve gay marriage, it is imperative that the Legislature enact laws to protect children adopted into such unions. In almost every television ad during the election, great emphasis was given to gay marriage as the only solution for gays to have a “family.” In most ads children were prominently included as family members. Gay persons cannot procreate children from their sexual unions so to create a family they must adopt. Adoption of a child into a homosexual union may expose that child to HIV/ AIDS. There are millions of homosexuals in the United States with HIV/AIDS, but
screening for the disease is not widely done or routine. Because AIDS is incurable, children must not be placed in the custody of persons who may be infected. Washington law provides that child custody decisions be made “in the best interests of the child,” and placing a child with an AIDS infected person is not in the child’s best interest. Therefore, the Legislature must prohibit legal adoption of a child by an HIV/ AIDS infected person, and must require that gay persons applying for adoption rights present medical proof that they are not infected. While such a law will not protect the child from the parent becoming infected, it will at least give the child a clean start.

Sibling House toy drive a success I can’t say enough about
the incredible amount of outreach we experienced from the community during the recent holiday party and toy drive for Sibling House. There were 227 kids and parents and 15 more volunteers and we had a blast! The “toy store” was full and the shoppers from each family had a great assortment to choose from. There will be a lot of smiles when those gifts are opened! Many thanks to Rosa Parks Elementary, Positive Ally After School Academy, Sorrento’s Coffee, Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant, Redapt. com, Vendaria Media Inc., Julie Friedman and Windermere Foundation, Eastlake Electric, Jeff Newport, Deb & Kent Knaus, Barb Koefod, and the generous Redmond Ridge Community for the incredible toy drive they were involved in. Many kudos to A.G. Bell Elementary School for the huge amount of food they collected in their food drive for Sibling House. Every item went home with many of the homes of our network.
In case you weren’t aware, Lori Church-Pursley, the director of our new South King County branch of Sibling House, deserves all the credit for procuring the 130 colorful custom made pillow cases that were donated for distribution to the network. Those were so cool! Thank you Tabatha Roach for donating 175 new books for the kids. All were snatched up! And of course, we could not have pulled off such a great party without the help of our volunteers: Henry and Naomi Lombard, Janet Schweizer, Mr. and Mrs. Toby Nixon, Cindy and Kevin McFeely, Marian and Jake Luther, Cody, Cheyenne, Brenden, Mindy, Jennifer (Gaskills) and Farah Mohammad. A huge thank you to Ben Von Ullrich and Dan Barnts for their parts as Santa and his helper. The kids loved you! And the biggest hugs of all go to Esther Ames and Diane Curtis, Elves Extraordinaire, for the 173 personalized stockings that they assembled
for Santa that were handed out to the kids! Thanks everyone! You are all stars in our sky!
Michael Gaskill, Sibling House

When a neighbor of the Kamiakin Middle School noticed strings hanging down into storm drains and smelled “something chemically” as she stood over vaults on Northeast 140th Street, she decided to investigate. Turns out Kamiakin Middle School had an oil spill Dec. 4 and the strings were attached to filters. Crews are still working to clean the area nearly three weeks after, but are almost done. The woman, who wishes to remain unidentified, said her neighbor spoke to a custodian who said school officials weren’t telling them “anything.” But Kathryn Reith, spokeswoman for the Lake Washington School District, said the environmental cleanup contractors have completely rid the water of oil and workers are in the process of testing the soil to determine how much was contaminated. Reith said they’re finding very little oil. Cleanup started almost immediately after workers noticed a fuel tank that connects to the middle school’s emergency generator was “lower than it should have been,” said Reith. “Both the Department of Ecology and Kirkland were complementary in immediate clean up,” Reith said. “This is not a huge spill. It was a small spill and every bit needs to
be dealt with but it was not huge.” Larry Altose, spokesman for the DOE said based on the latest calculations from fuel deliveries, tank soundings and generator motor tests, it appears 245 to 255 gallons of oil were released. Reith said workers periodically start up the generator to make sure it’s running correctly, which is when they discovered the hose that connects to the fuel tank had malfunctioned. A call was put in to the school’s environmental consultant who then notified the DOE. The DOE then filed a report and alerted the City of Kirkland and they immediately launched into a clean up plan, which was approved. A catch basin at the opening of the tank captured a lot of the oil, but Reith said the hose’s failure was closer to the ground surface. She said some oil had gone under a concrete slab. Oil also ended up in the storm water system and the storm water retention

Northwest University (NU) is pleased to announce that the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) has scheduled a regional accreditation site visit to NU, which will occur over three days in March 2013. The NWCCU last reaffirmed NU accreditation in 2011 after a Year One Evaluation (on what is typically a seven year cycle). NU received its initial regional accreditation from the NWCCU in 1973. This comprehensive visit was triggered by NU’s creation of its first doctoral degree, the Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree, and occurs one year after the completion of its first class of PsyD graduates. The dates of the scheduled visit are Monday, March 25 through Wednesday March 27, 2013. The site team will be present on the NU campus for these three days. During this comprehensive site visit, the team will tour the NU campus, review documents and interview many individuals associated with NU; including students, alumni, faculty, staff, and trustees. Public commentary is invited concerning the institution’s qualifications for accreditation. Comments will be accepted only when they are submitted in writing and signed. Comments must be received by the Commission at the address below by February 25, 2013. Police are searching for a man who robbed the Juanita branch Wells Fargo Bank on Dec. 19 and displayed a handgun while demanding the money. The Kirkland Police Department responded and was on scene within 90 seconds of the call going out. Several employees and customers were inside the bank at the time of the robbery with no injuries reported. The suspect left on foot prior to police arrival and a K9 track was not successful. The suspect is described as a white male adult 30-40 years of age. He wore a black half-mask pulled up over his mouth and nose along with a blue hooded jacket. The male had blue eyes, light colored eyebrows, and carried a black bag. The suspect was described as approximately 5-feet, 10-inches tall with a thin build.

Bellevue police nabbed a burglar Thursday who was caught on camera carrying a skateboard last month after a viewer recognized him from Washington’s Most Wanted. Assisting Kirkland police, Bellevue’s Special Enforcement Team arrested the 42-year-old suspect in Federal Way Thursday following the anonymous tipsters via Crime Stoppers. The suspect is being booked into the King County Jail for investigation of firstdegree theft and residential burglary. The Kirkland Police Department asked for the public’s help in identifying the man after he burglarized a Kirkland home on Nov. 13 in the 14100 block of 107th Ave. N.E. The victim’s residence was protected by a video surveillance system and captured video images of the suspect approaching the victim’s home and the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect was shown carrying a “long board” skateboard and eventually forced entry through a rear door. The suspect then backed a vehicle into the victim’s driveway and loaded it with property stolen from the victim’s residence. This included stolen electronics, jewelry and property in excess of $4,900. The suspect was set to be charged by Dec. 26, after the Reporter’s deadline.

loss of life suffered by innocent victims and their families. By offering free cremation to victims, Barton Family Funeral Service representatives say they want to shock the public to the realization that one person getting “high” and having a “happy party” may result in death and ruin lives of many people, including the impaired driver. Actions have consequences. Whether people are taking a narcotics or THC for pain control or alcohol or THC for pleasure, there are measurable risks. Killing another human being is among those risks. Details of the company’s offer can be found at www.bartonfuneral.com.
Quality Dollars and Party Store, George’s Eastside Shell, Bargain Beverages, Super Food Store and G Deli Food Mart are five Kirkland stores of 92 tobacco retailers that were caught selling tobacco to minors in Washington this year. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 5 this year, King County officials cited retailers 92 times for an illegal sales rate of over 8 percent. This reflects a drop from the 12 percent rate in 2011, but elevated from the 6 percent average from 20062010. Statewide, tobacco sales to minors are at a 10-year high at 16 percent. retailers who sold tobacco to minors is posted on the King County website. “Underage access to tobacco fuels addiction and early death for King County’s children,” said Dr. David Fleming, director and health officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County. Almost 90 percent of adult smokers started in their teens, and one out of every three youth smokers will die early from smoking-caused disease. According to Kathryn Ross of King County, the five Kirkland stores that sold to minors through November of 2012 have each been checked two or three times in the last five years with no other sales. “In compliance checks, whether or not a clerk asks to see identification, is the biggest predictor of whether an illegal sale will take place,”
Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink and Drive!
Ross said. “Three of the five stores that sold in 2012 in Kirkland did not ask for identification.” Federal law requires that clerks ask for identification from anyone 27 and under attempting to purchase tobacco. In Washington state, selling tobacco to a minor is prohibited by law, with a $100 fine and tobacco education for the retailer and a $50 fine for the clerk making the sale. Repeat offenders within two years are fined up to $1500 and may have their tobacco sales license revoked. In 2010 alone, the tobacco industry spent $80 million dollars in Washington state on marketing activities. In response to tougher federal regulations for marketing and advertising of cigarettes, the tobacco industry has created new products that appeal to youth.
