Monday’s nearly freezing temperatures were not enough to stop about a dozen individuals from participating in a park restoration event at the Watershed Preserve in unincorporated King County just outside of Redmond. The event was held as part of the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, which honors the late reverend on the holiday bearing his name by encouraging people to give back to their communities. For their part, the group at the Watershed Preserve, led by forest steward Mike Shaw, spent the day planting native trees and plants along the road running through the park. “It’s a great way to honor Dr. King and the service he provided to this country,” Shaw told the group about them volunteering their time. Shaw became a steward in 2010 through Forterra, an organization whose mis-
sion is to protect, enhance and steward the region’s communities and landscapes. Monday’s work party at the Watershed Preserve was one of three held that day through Forterra’s Green Redmond Partnership, which is part of the organization’s Green Cities program. The remaining restoration events in Redmond were held at Grass Lawn Park and Westside Park. Norah Kates, Green Cities project coordinator for Forterra, said in addition to Monday’s event, they have ongoing efforts to keep the local parks healthy. “We do restoration work all year round,” she said. During the warmer seasons, the Green Redmond Partnership and City of Redmond hold work parties at various parks throughout the city each month as part of the Last Saturday of the Month program. In addition to keeping the local parks healthy, [ more MLK page 4 ]

When Sharon Ilstrup traveled to Washington, D.C. with her family last weekend, the big plan was to attend President Barack Obama’s inauguration on Monday. The Redmond resident had wanted to attend the official inaugural ball later that night with her husband Blake as well. Unfortunately, Ticketmaster — the sales agent in charge of the ticketing process — had accidentally released the special login information for ticket purchases a day early and the couple missed their chance to get tickets. “I was bummed,” Ilstrup said. After the mixup, she told a friend who lives in Washington, D.C. that they would not be attending the ball. The friend, who works as an editor at CNN, asked why. After Ilstrup explained the situation with Ticketmaster, the 24-hour news network interviewed her for a story. KING 5 also interviewed Ilstrup and her husband. That story aired Jan. 18. U.S. Sen. In addition to work on Downtown Park, Cleveland Street will also see some improvements. Marchione said they will be widening the sidewalks to make the street more walkable. Other work on the street will include turning it into a three-lane road with street parking. The mayor said all of this is to prepare Cleveland Street to be converted into a two-way street, which won’t happen until about 2016. There will be continued work on the Redmond Central Connector (RCC), as well. Other work throughout Redmond will include a study of 166th Avenue Northeast from Northeast 85th Street to Northeast 100th Street — better known as Education Hill. Eastside Rail Corridor: maximizing opportunities By Jane Hague and Larry Phillips
After a decade of work, King County and our regional partners have an unprecedented opportunity to provide transportation and recreational connections to our east and south King County communities. Stretching from Renton to Woodinville, in an area already confined geographically between water and mountains, the 42-mile Eastside Rail Corridor (ERC) is a priceless public passageway. Now that its final acquisition has been completed, we must ensure that the region succeeds in maximizing its value and usage for the benefit of all King County residents. Acquisition of the ERC means the possibility of creating a north-south public transportation corridor and turning a patchwork of dozens of small trails into a regional system connecting hundreds of miles of trail. Imagine riding light rail or a commuter train down this corridor and completely avoiding the snarling Interstate 405 traffic. Imagine a future where you can not only bicycle east from the BurkeGilman Trail through serene farmlands and wine country, but continue north to the lovely Snohomish County trails or go south through the key economic centers and charming suburbs. So, how do we fulfill this vision? Acquisition of this corridor represents incredible partnerships between both public entities and public and private stakeholders. At
our turn
King County, we have determined that a regional planning process will be critical for properly coordinating plans between the public and private entities that have a legal stake in the county’s portion of this corridor: King County, Sound Transit, the cities of Kirkland and Redmond and Puget Sound Energy. This regional group will create a work program and outreach process to acquire input from the public, as well as all of the jurisdictions located along the corridor. A key outcome will be coordination and cooperation of corridor use for the betterment of our community and the taxpayers who will contribute to all of the potential uses. After all, future funding to pay for trail, transit and utility infrastructure will all come from the same taxpayers and ratepayers. So, let’s make sure that we keep those costs as low as possible through good coordination. We are known as a region of highly educated and innovative people who provide
for a vibrant local economy. Thanks to regional cooperation, we now have a flagship acquisition to underscore our regional image. We are planting the seeds for unmatched regional transportation connections and recreational opportunities to meet future population growth throughout King County. Let’s work together on a plan for bringing to fruition a corridor of our collective dreams. Let’s ensure that our children and grandchildren will have a wonderful array of travel options through dense urban centers and beautiful open spaces. Please join us in making this vision of the Eastside Rail Corridor a reality.
Jane Hague is vice chair of the Metropolitan King County Council and represents Bellevue and Kirkland. Larry Phillips is chair of King County’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee and a member of the Sound Transit Board.

Thanks for the Rosa Parks Elementary coverage
Web feedback on Southeast Redmond post office:
As the previous principal of Rosa Parks Elementary School, I was so very pleased to see so many Rosa Parks staff members and students recognized in last week’s edition. Alyssa Wachveitl, who teaches her third-graders about journalism, is, along with Jeen Drake, another Rosa Parks teacher, the finest young teacher with whom I had the privilege to work in my 33-year career. Ryan and Melissa Scott, cited for attaining National Board certification, are true gifts to the kids and school’s community. Maggie Duffy, cited for her role with the Girl Scouts and science, was in the first graduating cohort at Rosa Parks. Maggie was and remains, simply, a delightful young lady! If you’d like another example of amazing teaching, incredible relationships, character and compassion between children and a teacher, get out to the school and observe in Jim Anderson’s class!
I am not at all happy with this move. The new location is very inconvenient. Even worse, they have not added new drop boxes in other areas. The drop box in the parking lot of the QFC by Bella Bottega is regularly full to overflowing — a horrible security risk — even though they pick up mail daily there. I called the post office and confirmed this with the manager. There is so much demand for a drive-up drop box in an actual convenient location that people are overstuffing the very few available. I’ve started a Facebook campaign to add more drive-up boxes, but a move back to downtown Redmond would be even better: http://tinyurl.com/bfpghtq.

There is a steady flow of people to the new post office because everyone who left for the post office five months ago has now found their way out of the woods to the new post office. There aren’t as many complaints because most haven’t made it back home yet! The retrofit is
poor but there is lots of room.
Neal O’Neal
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has been absolutely horrid in this move. They have threatened mail drop points like the UPS store or other mailbox outlets that they may not accept mail dropped there. That is just wrong. For anyone on the west side of 520, this makes a trip to the post office a half-hour trip (at least) when it used to be a 10-minute trip to drop a box or letter. The USPS has also done a horrible job of emptying mailboxes in the downtown core. On a daily basis, I have found mailboxes completely full anywhere within 10 blocks of the old downtown post office. The new Southeast Redmond location is an awful building. When they retrofitted it for counter service, they made it so you have to pull the doors open as opposed to the downtown building that had an electric door. Ever tried to pull a door open while carrying five boxes? Not easy. Even if they didn’t want to install an automatic door, they could have put in ones that opened when PUSHED in — not pulled out. [ more letters page 6 ]
[6] January 25, 2013
www.redmond-reporter.com [ Letters from page 5] Hardly anyone comes out with packages but tons of people go in with them. If the USPS wants to save money, moving further from their customer base is not the answer. Cutting out Saturday delivery is. And it’s about time that postal workers realize that they don’t deserve a special pension fund, just Social Security like the rest of us. Want better? Fund it yourself.

Northwest at the time, caught the KING 5 interview and called her staff in the other Washington and asked them do what they could to fix things for the couple. All of this was happening unbeknownst to Ilstrup. “We were in D.C.,” she told the Reporter. “All this stuff was happening and we didn’t even know.” The Ilstrups made the trip with their 14-year-old son, Alec, and 11-year-old daughter, Anna, to give them a “once-in-a-lifetime” experience to wit-
ness history. They had requested inauguration tickets from U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and picked them up on Sunday. Viet Shelton of DelBene’s office said members of Congress are given a number of tickets to distribute and they are usually handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. “We were very happy that we were able to oblige them,” he said about getting the Ilstrups to the inauguration. Shortly after leaving DelBene’s office, Ilstrup received a phone call from Murray’s chief of
staff, who told her they were able to get her and her husband tickets to the ball. “I thought that was amazing,” Ilstrup said about the senator and her office’s efforts to help them. When Ilstrup and her husband arrived at the ball, they were directed to a ballroom filled with about 10,000 people, food and an open bar. Ilstrup was amazed and extremely impressed. CNN wanted to do a followup interview with her and her husband about their situation but the media was nowhere to be found. Ilstrup

quickly learned it was because she and her husband were at a private portion of the inaugural ball whereas the media was camped out at the public portion — with twice as many people — located in another ballroom. “Patty Murray gave us her tickets,” she said. In a story on CNN. com, Murray spokesperson Matt McAlvanah said the senator was touched by the effort the Ilstrups made to go to the ball and felt terrible that their hopes were dashed. “She told staff that she thought ‘their enjoyment was the best use of my tickets,’” he said in the story.
Shelton added that it was great that despite all of the chaos of the events that things worked out for the family. Ilstrup said they spent Monday evening going back and forth between the two parties and were able to catch a number of the musical acts from just about 10 rows back from the stage. They also witnessed the Obamas’ first dance. Ilstrup said there was an energy of celebration in the room during the ball and described the whole experience as “amazing” and “incredible.” She said that same feeling was present during the inauguration, as well.

I like that there is ample parking. And that they took out the massive amount of speed bumps that used to be in that parking lot. However, someone near the Old Redmond Schoolhouse asked me how to get to the post office, and I had no idea what to tell her (even though I knew how to get there). It’s not near any landmarks with the exception of the vehicle emissions testing station.

Move back downtown, please! It feels so out of the way, I barely go there anymore. I now use UPS store office for postal services, too.

We went to the Long Beach Peninsula — much smaller population than here, and we passed three post offices in a 15-minute drive. Our downtown needs a post office! How about all that new retail going in the new condos? If we’re dealing with the construction hassles, can we at least get some needed services closer to town?

I like the ample parking and it’s closer to my house, but I find myself checking my mail less frequently because it’s scary dark in that area in the evening and I don’t feel safe. The grouchy staff is the same from the downtown location, so I usually mail things from UPS instead.

SEUSSICAL Redmond Middle School takes on popular author in upcoming production of ‘Seussical Jr.’ Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
With his zany characters, nonsensical rhymes and colorful illustrations, Dr. Seuss has been a longtime favorite among young readers and next week, students from Redmond Middle School (RMS) will be taking on his work in their production of “Seussical Jr.” From the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, to Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and the Whos of Whoville, the show includes a number of Seuss’s characters, stories and plots. This is the third time director Kelly Willis has done
the show and she is finding the experience as enjoyable as her first encounter. “I thought I was going to be tired of it,” she said. Willis said seeing the students experience the musical for the first time is what makes the job new again. “They’re having a great time,” she said. Willis said “Seussical Jr.” has about 47 student actors from sixth, seventh and eighth grades. In addition, she said another 10 students are working backstage on the set, props and other aspects of the production. Willis, who founded Redmond Academy of Theatre Arts (RATA), has had more
experience Dr. Seuss as a parent reading to her kids and said one of the reasons he is so popular may be because his writing offers life lessons in a comical and nonsensical way that make it fun. Seventh-grader Rafael de Leon, who plays Horton, agreed. “I believe that his books have meaningful messages that children can interpret easily,” he said. “Seussical Jr.” is de Leon’s first time acting and he said he definitely wants to continue after this. He said he likes playing a character who is completely different from himself. Like de Leon, seventh-
Ben Broughton, an eighth-grader at Redmond Middle School, plays the Cat in the Hat in the upcoming production of “Seussical Jr.” Samantha Pak, Redmond Reporter grader Ryanne Rockafield enjoys acting because she gets to play different characters. As the Sour Kangaroo, her character’s personality is a lot different from those she has played in the past. “I get to have attitude,” she said about her role. While de Leon is making his acting debut next week, Rockafield and other students have performed in multiple productions. Eighth-grader Ben
Broughton, who plays the Cat in the Hat, has acted in a number of shows with Studio East in Kirkland and wants to continue doing so. “I definitely want to pursue it,” he said. Broughton used to read Dr. Seuss with his dad when he was younger and said one of the reasons the author is so well loved may be because he encourages readers to “step out of the box” and not be afraid of being different.
RMS’s production of “Seussical Jr.” will be showing at the Performing Arts Center at 17272 N.E. 104th St. in Redmond. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1-2 and 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 2. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for RMS students and children younger than 12. To purchase tickets in advance, contact Lisa Lange at tl.lange@comcast.net or (425) 444-7404.

Lake Washington Singers share joy of music for 60 years “We really get a lot of applicants. Many (who win) keep in touch with us, it’s really good.”
Raechel Dawson rdawson@kirklandreporter.com
The women of the Lake Washington Singers have graced the Eastside with song for 60 years and they’re far from finished. In fact, they’re open to expansion. For all of January, the choral group opened up auditioning for its annual spring concert in May. But this choir is not quite as stringent as some others. “We’re asking for gals who like to sing, who have a good ear and can blend with the choir and are willing to participate,” said Kirkland resident Karen Anderson, the Lake Washington Singers president since 2001. “It is a fun group.” The Lake Washington Singers nonprofit was founded in 1952 by mem-
Diane Underwood, Redmond, on the Lake Washington Singers’ scholarship recipients
Lake Washington Singers members Diane Underwood of Redmond (front) with president Karen Anderson (center) and Sandra Saenz at Anderson’s Kirkland home. Raechel dawson, Kirkland Reporter bers of the Eastside Chapter of the American Association of University Women.
And its mission is simple: To share the joy of singing with the community. The group of 30 to 40 members fluctuates throughout time but the organization’s unique “nonauditioning” concept allows women to join without be-
ing required to know how to read music. Although Anderson notes about 75 percent of the group is musically experienced, the group’s open policy has encouraged a diverse group of women, which include those with

mental disabilities or blindness to stay-at-home mothers or retirees. Singers are as young as their early 20s to as old as their 80s. But Redmond resident Diane Underwood, who has been with the group since 1983, says the nonprofit’s main purpose is to raise money for its annual scholarship recipient. “We really get a lot of applicants,” said Underwood. “Many (who win) keep in touch with us, it’s really good.” Anderson adds that several of the winners have gone “quite a distance” with their vocal career. Applicants submit an audio clip of them singing with their application and then the Lake Washington Singers narrow down the pick to the top three. After a vote, the winner receives $500 toward vocal training and the runner-ups are awarded $250 each. Additionally, the winner is invited to solo the group’s spring concert scheduled for May 18 at the Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church. The singers often have an opportunity to travel with the choir — the group has been to Barcelona, Spain and the British Isles among
other places. And they hope to perform “Around the World in Song” at the Montana International Festival this July. But joining the chorus entails more than traveling, singing and fund raising. The ladies attest that their close-knit choir will offer camaraderie. “When I first joined (in 2007), it lifted my spirits,” said Sandra Saenz, a member and Kirkland resident. “It gave me something to look forward to and I felt like I was doing something in the community, as well. The ladies in the choir are very supportive of each other.” Saenz mentioned that support extends by way of birthday cards, hospital visits or simply lending an ear to listen and a song to sing. “I think it’s been a case of sanity,” said Anderson. “In the midst of turmoil or crisis that people are dealing with in their daily lives, being able to sing totally removes them from all that for a little bit and gives them the joy of music.” To join, contact Director Jane Blount at director@ LakeWashingtonSingers. org or call (206) 363-6874. The group practices every Monday, 7 p.m. at the Bellevue Christian School on Clyde Hill. a cooler filled with fresh vegetables, homemade sandwiches and water. If you do stop along the way, try and wait until you can find a rest stop with plenty of healthy food choices. • Incorporate cancerfighting foods into your daily meals. Evidence from several studies suggests that fish can help protect against prostate cancer because they have “good fat,” particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Likewise, a lack of vegetables in the diet is linked to a higher risk of aggressive prostate cancer, according to experts at the Prostate Cancer Foundation. • A buffet can derail a diet quickly. When possible, skip the all-youcan-eat food fest and opt for individual menu items instead. When you can’t resist a buffet, eat an entire plate of salad before hitting the main dishes. Just be sure to go light on cheese and dressing and heavy on vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. After the salad, stick with grilled, lean meats and whole grains. Keep the amount of fat you get from red meat and dairy products to a minimum. • When you’re cooking for yourself, you know exactly what’s in your food. Don’t give up that knowledge just because someone else is doing the cooking. Ask how your meals are prepared to avoid certain no-no’s like trans fatty acids, which are found in margarine. • Remember to exercise each day, whether it’s exploring a new location on foot, or taking a swim in the hotel pool. Beyond burning calories, endurance exercises are particularly effective at increasing the body’s natural levels of antioxidants, eliminating inflammatory molecules that drive cancer. • Relax and enjoy your trip. Reducing stress can lead to a longer, happier life. More wellness tips can be found at www.PCF. org. Just as you would never forget your itinerary at home, don’t leave town without your good habits.

RHS gymnast’s neck and spine have healed after fall on floor exercise Andy Nystrom anystrom@redmond-reporter.com
Tami Borms said her daughter Kaylee had done her floor exercise a “million times” without suffering an injury. However, last October, while the Redmond High senior gymnast was trying to nail a back layout half during practice at the Northwest Aerials gym in Kirkland, something went horribly wrong. “She forgot where she was in the air and landed on her head,” Tami said. “When she first fell, she couldn’t move, but then quickly after that she was able to move. But her whole body was tingling. She ended up in Harborview (Medical Center in Seattle) for three days; she had a bulging disc, a slight fracture between (discs) three and four.” Kaylee spent six weeks in a neck brace and never thought she’d compete in gymnastics — the sport she’s loved since she was 3 years old — again. Slowly, but surely, the 17-year-old regained her strength and confidence and was eventually cleared by her doctors to join the Redmond High squad this season. Mustang coach Jason Farr said he was floored when Kaylee showed up at practice one day in her neck brace and handed over her athletic release forms. A few weeks later, she was back in the

But they’ve been higher than what I’ve predicted that I could do, so I’ve been happy with them,” Kaylee said. “I have considered it a blessing to be able to come back and I know I
shouldn’t risk it all, so that’s why I’ve been scaling back. (I just want to) get out there and to be able to sweat a little at practice with my friends.” Added Farr: “I didn’t expect her to compete at all this year and now she’s placing in the top 10 at meets again. That is one tough kid. She deserves a shot at a state berth for the effort alone.” Kaylee fell short of districts and state last year when she broke her right foot on the vault at the Kingco championships. Farr feels that Kaylee would have made state last year and again this year if she wasn’t plagued by injuries. “I felt terrible. It was like getting hit by a truck when
she told me (about her neck and spine injuries). After the way last season ended for her, I wanted so badly to help her get to state, and this happened,” Farr said. Tami noted that Kaylee — who made districts as a sophomore and has a career-high score of 9.35 on beam — has a chromosome disorder and has fought juvenile rheumatoid arthritis since she was 3 years old. It makes her prone to injury and because of that she wears wrist and ankle support straps. “It’s been a challenge forever, but she always seemed to get by it,” Tami said, adding that Kaylee’s whole face was paralyzed after taking some medication about a year ago.
Tami didn’t want Kaylee to jump back into gymnastics after her latest injury, but said that, “It’s just something that’s in her soul and you can’t tear her away from it, so I let her go back.” “I tell you, she’s fought through so much in her life,” Tami said. “She looks great out there.” Kaylee admitted to being scared during her first meet back, especially on floor, but she summoned her bravery to compete and credited her teammates and coach for their show of support. “And it’s really me trusting in the Lord, I’m a Christian, so it’s really been just praying that he’ll keep me safe,” she said with a smile.
