The Mercer Island Marine Patrol was part of an effort to save a man in the water off of Calkins Landing. A neighbor, Mark Eskridge, who saw the man from his home, used a paddleboard to reach him and pull him onto the board, then ferried him to shore. The man was treated for hypothermia. A small sign, but a big price $2.1 million for a 12,777 s.f. lot home to two small businesses and a USGS seismograph By Mary L. Grady
editor@mi-reporter.com
The small white sign perched on the corner of 77th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 29th Street is rather modest considering the asking price for the 13,000-square-foot parcel. The property, now home to the Pacific Northwest Ticket Service and the State Farm Insurance office, is up for sale by the Bitney family for $2.1 million; an amount that is the equivalent of just under $165 per square foot. As owner Dean Bitney will cheerfully tell you, the value is certainly not in the buildings, but the land. After he posted the ‘for sale’ sign about three weeks ago, he has had around a hundred calls, he said. Indeed, the two buildings that occupy the land — adjacent to the Veloce Velo Bicycle Store to
the north, and west of the mixeduse building owned by the King family — are holdovers from the 1940s. One of them served as home to Bitney family members, as well as tenants. Bitney calls the land and its buildings the “last piece of old Mercer Island.” The property is in the southeast corner of a large piece of underdeveloped property that appears ripe for some sort of development — perhaps on the scale of The Mercer or the 7700 or 7800 mixed use buildings. Bitney, along with his neighbors, the King family and Gary Lewis, who owns the Mud Bay and Veloce Velo building, have had conversations over the years about selling the three pieces together — but have yet to be successful.
It has been slow and complicated. There are easements and a less than positive real estate market. But Bitney thinks that this is the time to get serious about a deal. Bitney and his sister own the property and are each looking to perhaps find warmer places to spend their winters. A garage was the first structure built on the property in 1947. It was later converted to house the insurance business that remains today. The house on the corner, where the ticket office is now, was finished in 1948. The house has been home to several businesses. There was a drapery business, an art gallery and framing shop, and several beauty parlors. Along the way,

The City of Mercer Island is putting its property on First Hill up for sale. The property, located at 2976 74th Ave. S.E., is currently being used by the city’s water utility, and proceeds of the sale will be put into the city’s water fund. According to a press release from the city: “In furtherance of sustainability policies, the city will require that the eventual development of the property achieve LEED Silver or better certification. The city plans to work with potential buyers to encourage development that is consistent with the current character of the neighborhood and protects existing trees.” The City Council approved the sale of the property in 2009, after it was determined that the site was no longer needed for additional water storage. The city waited for real estate market to improve to list the property. Money from the sale will first go to pay off debt issues to fund construction of the emergency water well in Rotary Park. Go Red for Women February 1, 2013, marked the 10th anniversary of National Wear Red Day®, an event that was inspired to help raise awareness of the shocking frequency of heart disease in women. That first National Wear Red Day® in 2003 subsequently motivated the American Heart Association to create Go Red for Women, a social initiative intended to increase awareness, educate and inspire women to take action in the fight against heart disease. Funds raised for this initiative are also used to support scientific research and develop new tools and treatments in the fight against heart disease. Go Red for Women is QFC’s Charity of the Month for February. Here are some sobering facts provided by the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women in the U.S. It accounts for 1 of every 3 women’s deaths. 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors that can lead to heart disease. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease. Heart disease can affect women of all ages, even women who lead healthy lifestyles, if they have other risk factors. 64 percent of women who die suddenly from coronary
heart disease had no previous symptoms. Despite those statistics, only about 20% of women believe that heart disease is the greatest health threat they face. Go Red for Women and the American Heart Association are combatting heart disease through awareness and education and by motivating women to take action. Awareness includes understanding the symptoms of a heart attack, which can be different in women than in men. Women’s symptoms can include shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting and back or jaw pain. Other symptoms women should look out for are dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting, pain in the lower chest or upper abdomen and extreme fatigue. Knowing those symptoms is important, but wouldn’t it be even better to avoid those symptoms? And that means taking actions to reduce the risk of ever having a heart attack. Some of the actions the American Heart Association recommends are: not smoking, managing your blood sugar, get-
ting your blood pressure under control, lowering your cholesterol, knowing your family history of heart disease, staying active, losing weight and eating healthfully. Eating healthfully will have multiple benefits. A diet rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits, lean proteins, healthy fats and whole grains can be a great defense against the onset of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease. The AHA recommends that an adult consuming 2,000 calories daily should aim for: •
Fruits and vegetables: At least 4.5 cups a day.
•
Fish (preferably oily fish, like salmon): At least two 3.5-ounce servings a week.
•
Fiber-rich whole grains: At least three 1-ounce servings a day.
•
Nuts, legumes and seeds: At least 4 servings a week, opting for unsalted varieties whenever possible

‘Parlor Elan’ salon opens on South end By Rebecca Mar
rmar@mi-reporter.com
Parlor Elan’s name comes from the Italian for “moving forward.” The new beauty salon is located in the Rite Aid building on the South end. Two friends, Dina Good and Anne Messmore, opened the salon in mid-January. Good named the salon in honor of Messmore, who would have named her daughter, Anastasia, ‘Elan,’ if her husband had approved. “It is my tribute to her and all the effort she has put in,” Good said. “She is the one out there five days a week, six days a week.” Good owns the Dina S. Good Salon in Belltown and wanted to expand, to be closer to her clients who live in Bellevue and the Eastside. Messmore, a skin specialist,
became a licensed aesthetician after working as a flight attendant. Mercer Island was chosen as a convenient, central location. The salon offers eyelash extensions, anti-aging facials, chemical peels, spray tanning and permanent makeup. Perhaps the most unique offering is a bee venom facial, which originated in New Zealand and is popular in England — Kate Middleton reportedly had a bee venom facial before her wedding to Prince William. The venom comes from bees that pollinate the melaleuca plant. “We are the first salon to offer it on the West Coast,” Good said. “It’s like nature’s botox without being toxic.” Good’s Belltown salon has been in operation for seven years and, she said, was the first salon in Seattle to offer eyelash extensions. The salon is located at 8431 S.E. 68th Street and can be reached at (206) 9221230. To learn more, visit www.parlorelan.com.

Would I-90 tolling pay for more than SR-520? WSDOT to track travel by Islanders, residents, businesses to receive survey By Mary L. Grady
editor@mi-reporter.com
Islanders gathered once again to hear from Washington State Department of Transportation officials about tolling I-90 to pay for the SR-520 bridge and corridor. About 100 people came to the Feb. 7 Chamber of Commerce membership luncheon to hear from the WSDOT’s John White, the agency’s director of tolled corridor development. White sought to explain to Islanders why tolling is needed on I-90, but also to reassure them that WSDOT wants to know what Islanders have to say. He announced that a series of surveys will be conducted to measure the impacts of tolling on the community. The first will be a survey that will track Islanders’ use of I-90 via license plates. Next will be a survey mailed to Island residents concerning their travel, and finally a survey of businesses that will include how customers view tolls and how it would affect their travel or purchasing decisions. White said that 1,600 comments had been

Mercer Island Schools Superintendent Gary Plano noted that the school district is the Island’s largest employer and has some 300 employees who live off Island said there would be a huge impact on the school district if its staff faced tolling when commuting here. Tolling of I-90 is in its early stages, White said. There are many steps that need to be taken before tolling would begin. Along with the environmental assessment that is underway, the state Legislature will need to approve those studies and toll design. Then the federal authorities would need to agree to the plan and finally, the Washington State Transportation Commission would set the toll rates.

To the editor Interstate 90 tolling meeting was for only show The “study” at the MICEC on Feb. 29 was for show only. It is obvious that the decisions have already been made to toll I-90, no matter what our objections are. During the past few months, Tracy Vedder, from KOMO 4 TV, has shed much light on the shoddy construction of the new 520 leaking pontoons. Why should anyone have to pay for inferior work, as accepted by the DOT? The eastbound lanes of the I-90 bridge were replaced with new pontoons, after the existing pontoons were drilled into and sank. The blame was placed on the contractor, by DOT. Too many lives would be affected if we are held hostage by a state that wastes more dollars than it can wisely spend. Gail D. Parrish
More to the tolling, SR-520 story than first seems We returned from the Seattle/Montlake SR-520 WSDOT open house. We are strong advocates that the end of the new SR-520 bridge to Montlake should not be completed until full funding is available for extension to I-5. We spoke tonight with Richard Conlin — a Seattle Council person — who told us specifically that the future funding for completion is a “done deal,” and that it will be funded by I-90 tolls. When challenged by us, he said directly that the I-90 tolling to support SR-520 bridge rebuilding was specifically approved by the federal government. We told him that we could not believe what he said because it was a federal interstate, and that commerce from across Washington and the United States, let alone Mercer Island folks, would be impacted. He said, “It is a done deal.” Please contact us if we can provide

Perhaps the Mercer Island side and the Montlake side can find a way to effectively mitigate impacts. Marcia Weston
September 3, 1912 – July 4, 2012
Marcia Weston, a museum administrator and an officer in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, passed away on July 4, 2012 at The Virginian in Fairfax, Virginia. Mrs. Weston was born on September 3, 1912 in Seattle, Washington. Her parents, Lucius and Martha Marple were teachers from Boston who, as newlyweds, traveled to Seattle by train. They decided to remain and made their home in Seattle and on Mercer Island for the next 60 years. Mrs. Weston was the youngest of their five children. Marcia had a life-long interest in the arts which spanned several continents and a variety of activities in museums, schools and communities. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1935 and attended Radcliffe for a museum training course. A teaching fellowship in Oriental Art at Mills College, Oakland, California led to a Master of Arts in 1937. School news Mercer Island receives Green Ribbon award The Mercer Island School District was recently notified that the district has earned a Washington State Green
Leader District award, part of the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon schools program. The program celebrates districts and individual schools that work to reduce their environmental impact, improve health and wellness in students
and staff, and provide effective environmental and sustainability education. “We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the King County Green Schools Program and staff who have assisted us in our efforts to move forward in sustainability education. This award is thanks to them, our Green
from sub-contractor Aquatic Specialty Services and members of the Olympic Cascade Aquatics (OCA) staff, worked late into Thursday night to repair the broken pipe. The 40-year-old pool is owned and operated by the school district, which subcontracts the operation of the pool to OCA. Large-scale work on the pool, including needed improvement to extend the life of the facility, were part of the February 2012 school bond that failed. The district
has covered repairs — such as the one that happened on Thursday — in the district’s maintenance and operations budget. “We are very grateful for the efforts of our maintenance crew, Aquatic Specialty Services and OCA, for working hard to avert what could have been a major breakdown and long-term closure of the pool,” said MISD Superintendent Gary Plano. “Unfortunately, we are expecting more issues such as this one until we can acquire the funds to either extend the life of the pool or replace it with a new one.”

The preliminary races on Friday were delayed an hour due while repairs were worked on. “We have been monitoring the piping system and were prepared for something like this to happen,” said Tony Kuhn, the MISD director of maintenance and operations. Claire Thompson Raaum, age 84, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on February 5, 2013. She was born to Lindsay Levant Thompson and Rhea (Billings) in Tacoma, Washington on July 17, 1928. Claire loved the water, and throughout her childhood, she spent her summers at the family beach house on Vashon Island. She worked as a counselor for the Tacoma Girl Scout camp and was Waterfront Director for Camp Fire Girls (Camp Sealth) on Vashon Island. In the summer of 1945, as Rodeo Queen for the first annual Tacoma Rodeo, Claire was thrilled to ride a high-stepping saddlebred horse in the parade. Claire attended Sherman Elementary, Mason Junior High and Historic Stadium High School before attending the University of Washington where she earned her BA in General Studies and Nursery School Education. Claire was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the Silver Fish synchronized swim team. While attending the University of Washington, Claire met Gustav, the love of her life. They were married on August 25th, 1950. As a 5th generation Washingtonian, Claire took tremendous pride in her ancestry. For 25 years, she shared the story of her pioneer ancestors at Puget Sound grade schools. Donning a pioneer dress and bonnet, and carrying an antique rifle, she inspired students with tales of triumph over adversity. Claire enjoyed music, singing in church choirs and community chorus for nearly fifty years. She was happiest outdoors; tending her prized roses and begonias, cross-country skiing, and rowing her little boat on Allyn Bay, trolling for the elusive sea-run cutthroat trout. The Allyn beach cabin held many family gatherings where grandchildren learned at Claire’s knee. Claire is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Gustav, her three devoted children, David (Patricia) of Teton Village, WY, Christian (Joanie) of Redmond,WA and Lisbeth Raaum Harris (John) of Bozeman, MT, six beloved grandchildren: Jennifer, Erik, Allison, Courtney, Erika, Christopher, her beautiful great-grandson, Jackson Gould, a niece and grandnephew. Harold “Hal” Fardal passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on January 6, 2013 at the age of 82. Hal was born on March 3, 1930 in Webster City, Iowa and grew up in the nearby town of Stanhope. The youngest of three children, he took early to the pursuits of academic excellence, athletics and music. He graduated from St. Olaf College, the University of Wisconsin, and Yale Law School and also studied in Olso, Norway on a Fulbright Scholarship. Hal served in the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1955. After law school, he moved to Seattle, where he knew only one person. He quickly found his first job in law at Keller Rohrback, where he became a partner and continued to practice until his retirement 47 years later. In 1962, he married his beloved wife of 50 years, Geraldine (“Gerry”), a singer and teacher. They had two children while living in Seattle, then moved to Mercer Island where Hal served on the school board from 1971-1979, ran endless miles while training for marathons, listened to hundreds of Mariners games on the radio while working in the garden, and forged countless lasting friendships. He also was named the King County Bar Association’s Volunteer of the Month in October of 2004 for his pro bono legal work, and served as Chairman of the Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Selection Committee in 2010 and 2011. In his spare time, he enjoyed composing funny poems, managing the law firm softball team, researching his “100% Norwegian” family history, singing Tom Lehrer songs, and watching the eagles and hummingbirds who alighted in nearby trees. His motto was Carpe diem, and he indeed seized every day, accomplishing so much even at the end of his life as he battled cancer. In addition to his wife, Hal is survived by daughter Karen of Seattle, son Mark of Hadley, MA (Kimberly), two granddaughters, his sister Ann Carlberg, brother-in-law Robert Nein (Sally), and a large network of extended family, colleagues and dear friends. He was the definition of a good man - honest, decent, kind, generous, loyal - and will be so very missed. A celebration of Hal’s life will take place at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 23, in the Sanctuary of East Shore Unitarian Church, 12700 SE 32nd Street, Bellevue, WA, where he was a member of the church choir and congregation for many years. letters | FROM 5 WSDOT needs to gather more data I was one of the hundreds of MI residents who went to the WSDOT presentations on Jan. 29, 2013. I also mailed in my comments to WSDOT (opposing the three toll locations that WSDOT cited in its materials) based upon geographic inequities and income inequities. As you know, these positions are shared by a vast majority of the residents who attended the presentations. In my letter, I encouraged WSDOT to look at other possible tolling locations if tolling was to occur, e.g., further east where I-90 and I-405 intersect. In my letter I also encouraged WSDOT to do the following: (i) ask the MI school district for the number and percentage of teachers and MISD employees who don’t live
on the Island, (ii) ask the city (or separately, the MI police department and fire department) for the number and percentages of officers, firefighters and city employees who don’t live on the Island, (iii) ask the MI Chamber of Commerce if it has any data that indicates the number and percentage of employees who work for Island-based employers, e.g., Farmers, but who don’t live on the Island, and (iv) ask the MI Chamber of Commerce if it has any data that indicates the percentage of customers who regularly patronize Island-based businesses, e.g., Albertsons, QFC (north), etc., who do not live on the Island. This type of information and data will help quantify the income inequity created by the I-90 tolling locations under review by WSDOT because of the economic hardship suffered by these employees. They

will be required to pay a toll to go to work and thereby take a “cut” to their income. This type of information and data will also help understand and quantify the adverse impact such tolling could have on Islandbased businesses with a decrease in patronage by off-Island individuals. Assuming WSDOT does not try to gather the data and information that I have suggested (and any other relevant data and information), it might be worthwhile to try to gather such data and information so that it can be made public and presented to WSDOT for review as part of its Environmental Assessment. Is tolling the best option? If the objective is to prevent a “free pass” for drivers commuting to and from Seattle, you toll the west side of Mercer Island. If the objective is to prevent a “free pass” for drivers commuting to and from Mercer Island
and the Eastside, you toll the east side of Mercer Island. This option is “unfair” because no other community is tolled accessing I-90 and I-405. If the objective is to prevent a “free pass” for everyone driving on or off Mercer Island, you toll both sides of Mercer Island. This option will transform Mercer Island into an island similar to Vashon or any other island requiring ferry service. If this option is selected, it would have severe economic impacts upon Mercer Island and, to be “fair,” the state should encircle Medina, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point, Bellevue, Newport and Kirkland with tolls for the privilege of their drivers accessing I-405, I-90 and SR-520. Unfortunately, what is lost and not considered in the tolling arguments are the impacts upon those people who are on tight budgets, and live or work on Mercer Island, or are required to traverse across Mercer Island. And, what is lost in the equation are the adverse financial consequences that tolling will

cause businesses, governments and property owners on Mercer Island. What we need are longterm solutions where the costs are spread out over a wider base. The tolling of I-90 is not a long-term solution. We should form a countywide or tri-county funding entity that subsidizes the construction of large transportation projects through existing, new and creative funding sources. By spreading the costs over a wider base, the impacts upon those people who can least afford to pay will be less severe. To me this approach is more “equitable” and “fair,” and promotes a long-term solution to our transportation needs. Al Huhs Former Councilmember & Vice Mayor
Annual ridership figures top all projections for buses and trains By Reporter Staff
Sound Transit set alltime annual ridership records in 2012 for boardings on its commuter trains, buses and light rail. Sound Transit had an estimated 28 million boardings last year. Average weekday boardings topped 93,000 for the year. The combined annual numbers were up almost 12 percent over 2011 and boardings on all Sound Transit services topped agency projections for the year. “It was a great year for Sound Transit riders with more people than ever discovering how much time, money and frustration they can save by taking the trains or buses,” said Sound Transit Board Chair and Pierce County Executive Pat McCarthy. “With so many more people using our services it will be vital for Sound Transit to maintain the high standards our riders have come to expect.” Here is a look at the 2012 boardings by the numbers: • ST Express regional buses: 15.4 million boardings, 13 percent increase from 2011. • Central Link light rail: 8.7 million boardings, 11 percent increase from 2011. • Sounder Commuter Rail: 2.8 million boardings, 10.5 percent increase from 2011. Also noteworthy, the Tacoma Link light rail line topped one million annual boardings for the first time since it opened in 2003. The ridership report can be found at www.soundtransit.org/Ridership.

Combine the remaining ½ cup oats, potato starch, rice flour, flaxseed meal and salt in a large mixing bowl. Mix in the egg and olive oil. Cover the bowl with a towel and let set for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Flour a work surface with rice flour and roll the dough out to ¼- to 1/2inch thickness, depending on the size of your dog. Cut into shapes and then transfer to the prepared baking sheets. The Mercer Island boys basketball team beat Bellevue in the KingCo tournament finals on Thursday at Bellevue College. The final score was 51-47 for the Islanders. Mercer Island is the No. 1 seed going into this week’s SeaKing District tournament.

Against Bellevue, the Islanders started out hot, quickly scoring while defense held the Wolverines to few points in the first quarter. Things evened out as play continued, but Mercer Island held a 16-13 advantage at the end of the first. In the second quarter, the Islanders made key three-pointers to make up for a game that would be filled with turnovers. Despite missed chances, the Islanders continued to dominate the game, making it a 10-point affair at halftime with Mercer Island leading 29-19.

After the break, it wasn’t until after six minutes of play that either team scored in the third quarter. Bellevue began to make a move, but couldn’t hold back the Islanders offense as both teams scored 12 points to make it 41-31 at the end of the quarter. In the final minutes, Bellevue pushed back into the game, scoring 16 points to the Islanders’ 10, but the late surge wasn’t enough to take away the title from Mercer Island. Joe Rasmussen accounted for 13 points for Mercer Island, while Kaleb Warner added 12 and Nick Nordale
posted 11 points. Jake Shaddle had six points, Espen Platou posted four, Jake Stenberg hit a three and Max Tilden scored two points. After the game all conference teams were announced, with head coach Gavin Cree being named the coach of the year and Rasmussen earning most valuable player. By wining the KingCo tournament, the Islanders earned a bye in the first round of the district tournament. semifinals. The Islanders lost to Bellevue in the title match, 61-54. Bellevue dominated much of the first half, scoring 16 points in the first and second quarters while holding the Islanders to 22 in the first half. But after the break, Mercer Island came back strong, setting up a late run in the final minutes of the game. Mercer Island scored 18 points to Bellevue’s 11 in the final quarter, and pulled within three points of the lead at one time. Key free throw points for the Wolverines gave the team the bump they needed to win the game. The Islanders played West Seattle in the second round of the tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 12, after Reporter deadline. If Mercer Island wins on Tuesday, they will play the winner of the Juanita vs. Cleveland game on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 8:15 p.m. at Bellevue College. A loss on Tuesday means Mercer Island will play against the loser of the Juanita vs. Cleveland game on Friday, Feb. 15, at Bellevue College at 8:15 p.m. The top five teams advance from the district tournament to the state regionals.
