It’s a simple question, without a simple answer. How many students can the Snoqualmie Valley School District expect to be enrolled in coming years? For budgeting and staffing purposes, it’s 5,949 full-time equivalent students next year. For facilities planning, according to last spring’s district capital facilities plan, it’s about 6,100 next year, and almost 7,000 by 2017. See COUNT, 5

Nels Melgaard has never seen friends and neighbors come together in such a big way before—not locally, certainly not on behalf of a single person. Yet Melgaard was at the center of a two-weekend effort that saw patrons, friends, fellow members of Sallal Grange and their families, arrive at his Nels Melgaard, Nursery at Mount Si, for Nursery at Mount Si owner work parties aimed at getting this cancer-battling

Lifting some leaf litter, Jimmy Morris, Ian George and Sharmon Morris of North Bend, lend a hand at a work party Feb. 9 to help the Nursery at Mount Si and its owner, Nels Melgaard (left). North Bend man’s business a huge boost before the busy season. Melgaard and his nursery have had a rough time of it in recent years. Hungry, invasive elk and several frigid springs in a row put dampers on his business over the last three years. Last fall was the first time Melgaard could open up a pumpkin patch since 2008. Last summer, Melgaard got worse news, discovering he had colon cancer. He survived major surgery in January and is regaining his strength, but has more battles with chemotherapy ahead. So, with the hard work of spring ahead, Melgaard was surprised and moved to see nearly 100 people gather on Saturday, Feb. 9, for a volunteer work party to help keep him and the business rolling. Friend Teresa Warren of North Bend organized a Nursery work party on Facebook, and things snowballed. See HEROES, 3

In Brief
Teresa Warren readies seedlings at the greenhouse at The Nursery at Mount Si on Feb. 9. She helped organize two work parties to help Nels Melgaard, who is fighting cancer, and his nursery.
HEROES: Nursery FROM 1 Melgaard watched and helped as dozens of locals arrived to clean up the nursery beds, landscape, tend to fruit trees, plant seedlings, put new doors on greenhouses, clean, price and set up merchandise, and generally boost the business in a way that his small staff could never achieve so quickly. “It would have taken us a year!” he said. “This was amazing,” added nursery manager Christine Earl. “Talk about random acts of kindness. There were so many kind, wonderful people here.” Karen Granger, one of Melgaard’s Grange friends, helped get the word out. She tried to explain the impact that Melgaard, North Bend’s 2011 Citizen of the Year, has had on his community, and why so many were willing to step up and help. “He is the heart and soul of the new Grange,” said Granger. “He was the connector. Somehow, he is integral. He’s the glue.” She was there Saturday, Feb. 9, and watched as families, including young children, pitched in. “Everybody just went to work,” Granger said.
Wrong-way driver leads police on high speed chase
Kind words from the Web Friends exchanged their thoughts following the event, online, in messages that Melgaard shared. “Nels and Anne, being a part of this beautiful day was incredible. It was so fun to watch the nursery transform under the hands of our great community of friends. My children got to be a part of something that they won’t soon forget,” commented friend Katie Bergerson. “Some moments feel vacant and disconnected. This was NOT one of those days,” wrote Anne Melgaard, Nels’ wife. “I am so impressed by the busy workers, prayers and kind words that continue to come our way... The Melgaards are blessed and we know it! Thanks for coming out and thanks for having fun doing it! Smiles smiles smiles Hugs Hugs Hugs!!!!” “Did you see all the smiles and hugs and yes, a few tears, today at your wonderful nursery?” wrote North Bend resident Bev Jorgensen. “Everyone who was there had to go away feeling blessed and full of love! This day was a day of community spirit and love! You opened a great door again! We’re all in this together and we just have to continue to share love and stay open for opportunities.”
Speeding 100 miles per hour down the wrong-way lanes of a freeway, a man in a Honda Accord with Idaho plates led police on a reckless chase from Snoqualmie to Kirkland. A Snoqualmie officer first noticed the man doing 54 in a 40 mph zone on Snoqualmie Parkway shortly after midnight Tuesday, Feb. 12, according to Snoqualmie Police Capt. Nick Almquist. When he saw the flashing lights, the driver didn’t stop, but pulled a U-turn and drove back up the Parkway, entering I-90 via the exit lane on the south side of Exit 25. Traveling up the interstate, followed by Snoqualmie and Issaquah Police, then the State Patrol, he reached speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour, police reports said. The driver exited the highway onto Bellevue Way, driving at high speed and, at times, in and out of the oncoming lane. Officers lost contact with the car, but received more reports and recontacted him a few miles further north. State Patrol Spokeswoman Trooper Julie Judson said his driving was dangerous, with the Accord striking roadway barriers, the driver at times unable to control his vehicle. Media reports say the man made it all the way to the Northeast 85th exit near Kirkland. He stopped his car near the I-405 center line and tried to flee on foot before officers captured him. He was arrested for eluding and suspicion of DUI.
Rotary to get PSE grant for emergency shelter The Puget Sound Energy Foundation will present a check to The Rotary Club of Snoqualmie Valley for $20,000 at the club’s weekly meeting, 7 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. The Rotary Club of Snoqualmie Valley applied for the grant through the foundation to equip the Mount Si Senior Center as an emergency warming shelter for the Valley. The Mount Si Senior Center has been designated by King County and the American Red Cross as an emergency shelter; however, it currently lacks the back-up power generator and gas water heaters needed to fully operate in that capacity. The funds will be used to purchase an automatic transfer switch and generator, including gas water heaters. A storage shed for storing supplies is also planned. When operational, the shelter would operate 24 hours a day and offer both Valley residents and Puget Sound Energy repair crews heat, light, bathrooms, coffee, hot and cold foods, drinking water and emergency supplies.

Remembering the late mayor
Who was Jeanne Hansen? The name behind the park The other day, I was with a small group of folks, whom I respect and trust, when the subject of naming public places in honor of prominent people came up. I was surprised that a few thought it was not a good idea, mainly because by the time these places are funded and constructed, who remembers them anyway? It was an honest point of view, albeit in the minority amongst us. That got me to thinking about the future community park to be built on Phase II of the Snoqualmie Ridge. A small part of this 16-acre site is being used as a temporary dog walking area. A sign at the entrance annnounces this space as the future “Jeanne Hansen Community Park.” I have a very strong hunch that a vast majority of the new residents are totally unaware of who Ms. Hansen was or what she meant to the revitalization of Snoqualmie. She was mayor from 1987 to 1997, and died Jan. 3, 2001. I first met Jeanne in 1975 when I was seeking employment as a tree planter. We were about to discuss my qualifications when she took a call from the mill regarding a worker’s need to see the nurse. Everything stopped between us until she made sure the worker’s needs were met. I remember her saying how glad she was that Weyerhaeuser still had a registered nurse on site. Years later, Jeanne and I became colleagues at the Snoqualmie mill site. She had been promoted to human resources manager, responsible for assisting over 1,000 employees at both the Snoqualmie and Enumclaw mill sites. Her influence had expanded within the company and the Upper Snoqualmie Valley. Soon after my first meeting with Jeanne, Weyerhaeuser phased out the last vestige of the “mill town” when it stopped providing first aid and health care services. Jeanne used her position on the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation Committee to successfully lobby a grant of $25,000 to build the first full-service hospital in the Valley. With this promised gift, she used her artful persuasion with other regional corporate giants to match Weyerhaeuser’s gift. The Snoqualmie Valley Hospital was largely built due to Jeanne’s dogged determination to see the needs of the people met. At that point, Jeanne was on a roll. She saw to it that the hospital was located in Snoqualmie. But the community was also in dire need of a community center, where senior citizens, retirees, and those in need could congregate for assistance in matters beyond their expertise, get a warm and nutritious meal, or for social interaction. Jeanne can be credited with obtaining another grant for a North Bend senior center. Jeanne understood that a community thrived when the people could count on finding services within their community, rather than traveling outside their hometown. She also understood that people needed basic skills to improve their lives, and the lives of their children. As Human Resources Manager for the Snoqualmie Mill, Jeanne was confronted with the frustrations of the illiteracy of many of Weyerhaeuser’s workers, and community members too. She helped form the Eastside Literacy Council which for years quietly made reading mentors available to mill workers, and citizens alike. Her understanding of an enormously sensitive issue, never openly discussed, but undermining her community and generations of families, required a long-term plan of reaching out to the non-readers and helping them transform into lifelong learners. Because this was such a personal situation, Jeanne never sought, nor received any recognition for her efforts. Those whom she helped will never be able to thank her enough. It was her humanitarian spirit which brought her into City Hall every Saturday morning. Jeanne wanted to hear from hard-working constituents who were unable to attend the nighttime council meetings, or who just felt more comfortable speaking privately with the mayor. It was her humanitarian side that pushed her lifetime PEO membership by actively supporting deserving young ladies with scholarships. Snoqualmie’s favorite daughter has earned the highest form of tribute which the city can bestow. Naming a prominent park in her honor is a start. Dick Ryon North Bend

After a slow morning of attempting to contact other ham radio operators, middle-schoolers at Two Rivers School in North Bend enjoyed an afternoon chatting with people all over the world, as part of the annual School Club Roundup. “All of a sudden the band has come alive!” announced ham radio operator Steven Kangas, who volunteered two days helping the students to get on the air for the twiceyearly roundup. Sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the School Club Roundup ran through last week, giving students a chance for hands-on learning in many subject areas. At Two Rivers, students learned about the science of short-wave radio, then ventured outside to build their own “homebrewed Delta Loop” antenna, as Kangas called it, on the first day of the roundup. Middle school teacher Joe Burgener points out the antenna, anchored on one end to a 50-foot evergreen and to lower trees at two other points, forming a three-way intersection, with a loop of plastic is suspended in the center. “The whole thing is the antenna,” he said, and it

Volunteer Steven Kangas, standing, explains ham radio jargon to middle school students on day two of the school roundup. took them most of the day to assemble it. Kangas used an air cannon to shoot a line to the top of the tallest tree. Students used the line to pull progressively heavier cables to the top of the tree, until they found the right weight, then the process was repeated in the lower trees. Many of the boys in the class thought Monday was the highlight of the roundup, but on Tuesday, most were equally anxious to talk into the microphone on the air. “We’re encouraging them all to try it, to put their voice out there,” said Burgener, as Kangas’ radio hissed quietly at the center of a circle of students. Nearly all of them did. “It was cool,” said Sloan King, who had no fear about talking to the world. Throughout the
afternoon, she repeated “CQ, CQ, CQ, this is Whiskey Niner Sierra Kilo, a School Roundup station calling, CQ,” into the microphone, until they got a response. They heard from operators in Chile, Japan, California, Centralia, and Portland. Bob in Los Angeles wanted to hear from them, asking the students about the radio they were on, their antenna, and whether they planned to get their radio licenses. That question prompted nervous giggles all around, probably because they got it a lot. Mike in Portland asked who might get their licenses, too, but he also made the most of his time with them, handling it like the learning opportunity it was. First, geography: “I went overseas for the Voice of
America, for 20 years,” he said, listing the many countries he’d lived in and the languages he’d gained some skill in, from Greek, Arabic and Thai, to Tagalog and the little-known spoken language of Sri Lanka. Then politics, as he described his work for the Voice of America. “We called it the official line of the United States, and we broadcast it on shortwave.” Next was history, as he talked about going to school in a small building, with two grade levels per classroom. “We have a mixed class of seventh and eighth graders, and we don’t move during the day, either,” student Lily Austin told him. “We need to have a good grip on math,” Mike told the group. “You’d be amazed at how much of our physical world can be modeled in math.” For Austin, and for a lot of the other students, the highlight of the day was “talking to that man!”
COUNT: School population FROM 1 For a bond campaign, the numbers are, some say, questionable. School board members discussed their concerns about the demographer’s projections at a work session Feb. 2, and briefly at the end of their Feb. 14 regular meeting, saying they wanted to resolve the dispute before going to voters for a bond this fall. At issue are the discrepancies between the projections from Calm River Demographics and those roughly calculated by board members Carolyn Simpson and Geoff Doy, neither of whom made any claim to expertise in demography. Both Simpson and Doy felt that Calm River’s projections were reliable through about 2020, but felt that they assumed more growth than either Snoqualmie or North Bend city staff were willing to project for following years. A November report from the district’s usual demographer projects enrollment at between 7,000 (low end) and 7,500 (high end) by 2020, and between 7,500 and 8,500 by 2030. “The implication of getting to the high point, to me, is beyond the realm of possibility…” said Doy. “There is no plan in either of the two major municipalities to embark on the development that would get us there.” Simpson said the projections would call for another community about the size of Snoqualmie Ridge to be developed somewhere within the district after 2020, “and at this point in time, I can’t find anybody who thinks that’s a possibility.” Several ideas were proposed, including a getting a second opinion from another demographer, but at the suggestion of Business Services Director Ryan Stokes, they agreed to bring their calculations back to Calm River and ask about the discrepancy. Simpson and Dan Popp agreed to meet with Calm River this week.

Competing at the Tacoma Dome, the Wildcats, with a team score of 169, finished third behind state champ team Enumclaw, with 181, and Kamiakin, with 179.6. It’s the best finish in the team’s five trips to state over the last five years. Mount Si finished fifth last year and was undefeated in its meets this season. During the state finals on Saturday, Feb. 16, Mount Si’s Hannah Richmond tied for 11th on bars with an 8.65. On beam, Jenn Rogers tied for seventh on floor with a 9.4, and tied for 10th on beam with a 9.15. In all around scores, Richmond, a senior, was 18th, followed by Rogers at 19th. Hailey Johnson was ranked 38, Carissa Castagno was 57 and Pauline Kaczmarek was tied for 59th. Mount Si will see a number of seniors graduate, including Elizabeth Holmes, Hannah Richmond and Jessica Trotto. Several top athletes are expected to return, including Rogers, Castagno, Johnson, Mackenzie Brown, Maggie Kenow and Abby Weber.
Cedarcrest sends five to Mat Classic High school wrestlers Bailey McBride, Curtis Chittenden, Ely Malametz, Nick Decker, and Carlos Toledano won spots in the state tournament this weekend after a successful showing at the Region 1 2A wrestling tournament at Sedro Woolley Saturday, Feb. 9. Toledano took third in his class, 160, at state. McBride took sixth, Decker, 152, took eighth. At regionals, McBride, wrestling at 106 pounds, took first place, as did Malametz at 138 and Toledano at 160. Chittenden took second place in the 132-pound class, and Decker took fourth at 152. Another Red Wolf, Callen Martinez, 113, earned a sixth place, but did not advance to state.
The atmosphere in the mat room was intense Monday and Tuesday, lightening Wednesday, as Mount Si’s state-bound grapplers prepared to handle their business. Mitch Rorem, at 195 pounds, and Tim Corrie, at 182, stepped up to the big show last weekend at the WIAA state wrestling championships in the Tacoma Dome. Both Mount Si wrestlers made it three rounds into the tournament. Corrie and Rorem both had first-round losses. Rorem fell to Meadowdale’s Ciaran Ball, 4-1, then beat Ferndale’s Hunter Grundhurd before falling to Kelso’s Keoni Garcia, 3-1. Corrie fell, 8-4, to Decatur’s Spencer Smith in the first round, beat Stanwood’s Keegan Noel, with a fall in 3:51, then fell to Will Bishop of Hanford in a 9-7 decision. The prior weekend, Rorem placed second at regionals in his class, with Corrie placing third. “These guys are hardworking,” said head coach Tony Schlotfeldt. “They’ve Mitch Rorem, done a lot of work, the last years. They set the Mount Si state wrestler four pace for our practices. They get what they deserve—they get to go to the big show.” Nate Whited, at 220, and Eli Clure, at 120, placed fifth and attended as alternates; It was Clure’s second appearance at state as an alternate. He narrowly missed a ticket to the show after falling, 2-1, in a decision at regionals. Ryley Absher, 132, just missed a chance to attend, placing sixth. Whited was happy to attend, “just to support my team—it’s what I’m here for. If I get to wrestle, it’s another positive.” Of this group, Clure returns as a senior. Work hard, year round, the state bound seniors suggest to younger teammates. Corrie and Rorem put in time at camps, and Rorem is a Valley club wrestler. “It all begins with practice,” says Corrie. “It goes really fast,” Rorem said of the season. “You’ve got to make the time out of season to have good results in season.”
“Everything you do, the work you put in, will pay off.”

Making history Cedarcrest girls punch ticket to state “To state” was the sign that Sarah Stauffer carried out of the locker room to cheers from the waiting crowd. Cedarcrest’s varsity girls had just earned a historic appearance, beating visiting Sehome, 37-29, in front of a pumped home audience Tuesday, Feb. 12. “We’re going to state for the first time,” said a “super overwhelmed” Kathryn Smith. “All the work is paying off. We knew we could do it.”

PLAN
Tuesday night, Cedarcrest pushed to a quick lead early on; It was 18-12 CHS at halftime. However, Sehome started putting pressure on the basket in the latter half of the second quarter, and evened things up in the third. The team lost an eight-point lead, but in the second half, the Lady Red Wolves played better, and smarter. “Everybody contributed tonight,” said junior guard Susan Kenney. “We kept our spirit up, never gave up. We kept fighting back.” In the fourth quarter, Lacey Deming made a shot to make it 27, and Kailyn Campbell had a couple of important lay-ups to increase that lead. Campbell rebounded and put it in at 2:07 to make it 35-29. A couple of free throws by Stauffer sealed the deal. “It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it,” head coach Brad Knowles said of the win. At this point in the season, everybody plays tough, he added. Cedarcrest’s three forwards, Lacey Deming, Courtney McKinney and Kathryn Smith had a great game, said Knowles. Smith added key rebounds and shots, and McKinney was strong on the defense. “We needed to score and we needed defense for this game to be solid,” Smith said. “We had everyone step up and play the positions we needed them to.” Campbell said there were nerve-wracking moments, but the team didn’t lose faith. “It came down to heart,” she said. “This is our house. You don’t beat us here,” said Molly Hammontree, who shut down Sehome’s Rachel Albert. Now, Cedarcrest plays Port Angeles at Lynden, 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the state 2A basketball regionals.

We lost the “real deal” of a lady when Dot passed away on February 4, 2013 from complications after an open heart surgery. Dotti was born in Walla Walla, Washington on March 21, 1947. She was the youngest of five and grew up in Ellensburg,Washington. Dot lived most of her life in the SnoqualmieValley where she raised her family. She was a “mom” to everyone and graduated high school countless times by taking in so many young people. Dot was a force of nature who worked full-time while giving herself to so many and never knew the word “No”. She started her career in banking and was the bookkeeper for G&S Services until her recent retirement in July. Dot loved telling stories and experiencing the world to come up with those stories. She was very active and loved the outdoors. Growing up on a farm in Ellensburg, she was compassionate to animals, she enjoyed track, and horseback riding. In the Snoqualmie Valley, she was passionate about softball; played on many teams and leagues, coached little league, and recently was on the over 60 Jack & Jill league. She loved camping, going fishing, and was an avid bowler. She was caring, giving, and animated with a lively laugh. A Memorial Services was held on February 16th. In 1954 she married the love of her youth, Lanny Penaluna. She was widowed in Oct of 1977. In August of 1980 she married Delmer, whom she loved for the rest of her days. She had a career with the Washington State Highway Department and continued her education and became an engineer, designing new roads. She retired from the Washington State Highway Department. She and her husband were members of Calvary Chapel of Seattle where she was a deacon for several years.
