Bainbridge Island Almanac 2013

Bainbridge Island —no better place to call home “Bainbridge Island will be to Seattle what Long Island is to New York,” proclaimed a small advertisement in the Aug. 22, 1906 edition of the Seattle Star. An anonymous advertiser was selling 34 acres of property on the island — with a thousand feet of waterfront, a 7-acre orchard, and 15 acres of cleared land — for $6,000. “This is the greatest bargain ever offered in Seattle,” the ad announced. Bargains like that are quite hard to come by these days, of course. And no wonder. We live in a place that’s widely recognized as one of the best places to live in the Pacific Northwest (and the country). It’s a place with a world-class quality of life, rich and diverse history, abundant natural beauty, outstanding schools, and a deeply committed and caring

community. Tucked into the central Puget Sound, a half-hour by ferry from downtown Seattle, Bainbridge Island has made its share of history, from 19th century shipbuilding at Port Madison, to 20th century lumber milling at Port Blakely, to the crucial role the island’s military installations served in winning the war in the Pacific during World War II. The Bainbridge Island Review, your hometown newspaper for 90 years, presents our 2013 Almanac — your guide for living on the island. Inside, you’ll find the information you need for daily life on Bainbridge; government offices and contacts, museums, arts and entertainment offerings, parks and recreation, clubs and organizations, school information and more.

that offer a glimpse about who we are. The Bainbridge Island Review has long been known as “The Only Newspaper In The World That Cares About Bainbridge Island,” and we thank those who in the community who have helped us create this comprehensive guide. Now, work begins on our 2014 edition. Ideas? Updates? Call 842-6613 or email editor@bainbridgereview. com. Thank you for picking up this copy of the Almanac and for up-to-date information on Bainbridge Island every week of the year, call 842-6613 to subscribe to the Bainbridge Island Review, or visit www.bainbridgereview.com. Ferries — instrumental to island life From a ferry yard on the shores of Eagle Harbor to a boat being included on the seal of the city, ferries are tightly woven into the fabric of Bainbridge Island. Washington has 23 ferries running between 20 ports throughout Puget Sound. One of the most popular routes is between the island and

Seattle. With two boats servicing the island — the Tacoma and the Wenatchee — the route is a major gateway onto the Kitsap Peninsula. The ferry run between Bainbridge and Seattle carried 6.1 million passengers in 2011, and numbers have been steadily matching that figure for 2012.

Places that make Bainbridge Island special

Bainbridge Island’s geographical history is a celebrated aspect of the community, whether it’s a landmark frequently passed or a place that requires a short drive to the south end. The beaches, roads, and buildings all carry a little piece of the island’s story.

The waters surrounding the Port Blakely Mill are filled with logs and ships in this circa 1885 photograph.

world.” The scenic beach park Port Blakely of today is hardly recognizable next to the Port Blakely of yesterday. In the 1880s, it was home to the world’s largest lumber mill and an industrious railway. A thick sea of ship masts crowded the harbor back then. Before two fires and changing business conditions led to its ultimate demise, the mill boasted of a capacity to produce 200,000 board feet a day.

points in history. Unlike most communities, however, the Island was both outspoken against the camps and also one of the few places to welcome back the war’s exiles. The editor and publisher of the Review during this time, Walt Woodward, published wedding announcements, births, deaths and camp conditions from the paper’s incarcerated correspondents. Nidoto Nai Yoni, translated as “Let It Not Happen Again,” is emblazoned on the memorial as the site’s motto. Located at Pritchard Park, it is not far from where the 227 Japanese-American Bainbridge Islanders were boarded onto a ferry for Seattle.

The mansion at the heart of the Bloedel Reserve is built in a French-chateau style and dates back to 1951 when Prentice and Virginia Bloedel first moved onto the property.

Gazzam Lake and Wildlife Preserve offers 444.6 acres of robust forests and trails. Most of the area remains untouched by human development, which provides for a well-connected habitat for animals of the Pacific Northwest. The park has two entrances. The northern entrance is located a quarter mile west of Crystal Spring Drive from Marshall Road. Another entrance

The Bloedels spent many of their years on the property transforming it into a magical oasis that would become a internationally renowned public garden. Its 150 acres seamlessly blend natural woodlands and a variety

The Camp Yeomalt log cabin has sat on the edge of Park Avenue since 1935. It was first built by unemployed islanders through Presi-

dent Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration as a Boy Scout camp. Around 2005, the cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and it went through an extensive restoration process using local materials and age-old methods. This included hand-hewn Douglas Fir that was carefully selected, harvested then removed from the forest using horse power. Today, the Camp Yeomalt cabin is again used for its original purpose: youth camping and scouting activities alongside community performances and education.

In the summer, it is rare for a Bainbridge Islander to skip out on spending at least one day sitting atop one of the many logs of driftwood on the beaches of Fay Bainbridge. This 17-acre park offers campsites and picnic areas. But still for the daytime visitor, it remains a great escape to embrace the Northwestern air as the camping area is set

ritchard Park

Anyone who has lived on Bainbridge Island long enough will know the story behind Pritchard Park. But for relatively new residents, it may come to a surprise that the Island was once the playground for an environmental hazard that led to the involvement of the Environmental Protection Agency and Coast Guard. In 1904, where Pritchard Park’s sandy beaches are now once stood the Perfection Pile Preserving Company’s Wyckoff Creosote Plant where lumber from the island’s mills were sent to receive wood treatment. The treatment (creosote) was an oily liquid used to pressurize and preserve wood. Reports were filed by the EPA and Coast Guard by the early 1970s of oil leaking into Eagle Harbor. Fishing was banned in the area, and by the mid-1980s the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found Eagle Harbor had the highest concentration of creosote-deprived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a carcinogen, in the Puget Sound, threatening water supplies and sea-life. With increasing environmental awareness from the community a petition was drawn out to have the site put on the National Priorities List to receive federal funding for a cleanup. And after almost 90 years of contamination, the plant closed its doors in 1988. Since then, a 50-acre parcel of the land has been converted into one of the few sandy beaches on the island, now called Pritchard

ay Hay & Feed

The historic Rolling Bay building was falling apart when in 1979 Howard Block and his wife CeAnn Parker decided to buy it. Built on top of cedar stumps without a foundation, Block knew they had signed up for a lot of manual labor before they could consider opening. He set to work digging out the deteriorating building by hand, pouring in a new foundation and restoring the interior to better facilitate a multi purpose shop. This past June, the building itself celebrated 100 years as a community store, its past functions have ranged from a grocery store to TV repair shop. It has operated as Bay Hay & Feed for about 30

of those years under Block and Parker. And with all the work that the two invested into the historic building, they have still managed to maintain its heydey aesthetic. Today, Bay Hay & Feed serves several functions. It still supplies feed, livestock and gardening supplies like it did as a grocery store for the Rodal family in the early 1900s. Nowadays though, casual and work wear clothing are available where the Rolling Bay Post Office once stood from 1915 to 1940.

“Split Rock.” The residents living near the junction of Phelps and Spargur Loop roads and Madison Avenue where the rocks sat came to be known as living on Split Rock Road. One broken half sat on top of the other, naked of any paint, up until 1971 when two Bainbridge High School sweethearts looked at the rocks and saw the face of a frog-to-be. The couple, Bob Green and Ellen Barnes who would later marry, bought a bucket of paint from the former Winslow Hardware and transformed the landmark into Frog Rock. Last year the rock celebrated 40 years of green-ness and is considered Bainbridge Island’s version of Seattle’s troll under the overpass — a sort of mascot for Islanders.

Up until 1950, Bainbridge Island relied solely on ferry systems to remain connected to the mainland. Even today, part of island living is having to succumb to a ferry schedule. Before Agate Pass Bridge,

uyematsu Farm

The Suyematsu Farm lies on a stretch of land off Day Road. It was tended by Akio Suyematsu until his death in 2012. The Japanese-American farmer owned the land since he was 7-yearsold. At the time, it was illegal for Japanese immigrants to own land in America, so young Akio, who was born in Port Madison, put his name down as the official owner of the property. He only left the farm during World War II when he was sent to a Japaneseinternment camp. He returned to the land in disarray and nurtured it back to glory. In the decades since, the man grew into a legend; a farming hero of Bainbridge Island, helping new farmers come on to the scene and imparting his wisdom.

Today, the farm continues. A portion of the land was given to the city so that other farmers can utilize it. Other parts have been used as a vineyard producing island wine. There are many farms on Bainbridge, but the heart of the island’s farming legacy beats in the soil that Akio sowed.

slandWood

When Paul and Debbi Breinard heard that an 1,100-acre plot of land was on sale near their home on Bainbridge Island, something triggered in the couple that would bring to life a thriving educational facility. The following year, 1998, they bought a 255-acre parcel of the untouched land. Over the course of two years Debbi perfected and executed what started out as just an idea to provide an overnight outdoor educational experience to kids from all over the Puget Sound area. Today IslandWood is one of a kind. The facilities boast of three separate lodges and a welcome center, all solar-powered and built with recycled materials. The

flourishing undeveloped land surrounding the lodging provide a playground of learning for students. In the almost 11 years since its opening, the school has provided an outdoor educational experience for more than 4,000 students in the Puget Sound area.

Admission for the museum will be free to experience local and regional works of art. The museum will host its own collection as well as provide space for traveling works. The museum is a local effort utilizing island contractors PHC Construction, and island architect Matthew Coates. It was paid for largely through donations from the Bainbridge community. The museum will be part of a new gateway to the island that includes The Waypoint park across the street.

Most visitors to Bainbridge Island would consider the community a sleepy town after 6 p.m. everyday. Contrary to popular belief, this is probably one of its best qualities. Fun, enriching activities are happening everywhere on our little Island while the quietude of a safe and family-friendly community remains intact. From theater performances to live music, Bainbridge offers a wide variety of arts and culture. But not many would know that something is happening at the Treehouse Cafe just by driving past Lynwood Center. A part of living on the Island is that you have to know where to look. For instance, Pegasus Coffee House located at the bottom of Madison Avenue has weekly events posted in small font on their marquee above the door. Events are usually Friday and Saturday evenings with acoustic music sessions. While listening to music, a customer at the cafe can enjoy sipping on a glass of Green Hour wine and bar food, not to mention the Green Hour’s namesake ARTS:

variety of Absinthe cocktails. A cafe that offers Absinthe and bar food at night? The owners of the little establishment take seriously its European style community center. The Island’s opportunities for consuming art and culture don’t stop at music. Every first Friday of the month the art galleries and boutiques down Winslow Way open their doors for an evening of art. The First Friday Art Walks are fun for people of all ages. The galleries offer free wine and cheeses and an open house for anyone who wants to drop in for a little mix and mingle evening. Some galleries like the nonprofit, Bainbridge Arts & Crafts feature different local artists every month. Here’s a list of all the venues on the Island that offer regular events, performances and showings.

The great outdoors is truly great on Bainbridge When it comes to open space and outdoor recreation, the citizens of Bainbridge Island can’t get enough. You might think that this Puget Sound island would be satisfied to rest on its nearly 1,000-acre laurels, but no; every year the island renews its commitment and expands its public lands. In the most recent case, the Bainbridge Island Land Trust acquired the 31-acre Hilltop property, linking the east and west segments of the Grand Forest. The Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District was involved in part of the purchase and will be the property’s overseer; it has also built a trail linking the two Grand Forest properties, which the district also manages. Fort Ward Park, located at the island’s south end, is a 137-acre outpost with a boat launch, underwater park for scuba diving, walking trails, picnic areas, and one campsite for kayakers. Enjoy 4,300 feet of waterfront along Rich Passage or wander through the remains of World War I era gun emplacements inland. Follow Pleasant Beach Drive south from Lynwood, or find the up-

area for Fort Ward. It became part of district’s park system in 2011. Nutes Pond is a 31-acre passive park with a captivating landscape whose central feature is a tranquil pond. Located off Toe Jam Hill Road at the island’s south end, this park purchase was in conjunction with the Open Space Bond fund and conveyed to the park district in 2011. Parking is not yet available. Signage, parking improvements and picnic opportunities are planned through the district’s capital program. Moving north, a trail system connects Fort Ward to Blakely Harbor Park, which boasts 40 acres of waterfront and woods around a historic millpond and stone jetty. Once the center of a booming timber industry, the inlet is a serene spot amid water, sky and birds. Access the park from T Road, or at several other points on foot or bike. Eagledale offers an ambitious little park near the south end of the island, including a cultural arts building and pottery

kiln. There is a fenced, off-leash dog area; play equipment; a covered picnic area; tennis, sports, and volleyball courts; a stone labyrinth and a fine view of Mount Rainier, all on 6.7 acres off Rose Avenue. Plans are also in the works to extend Blakely trails to 50-acre Pritchard Park, which sprawls along the south shore of the mouth of Eagle Harbor. While part of Bill Point is closed to the public for industrial cleanup, the sandy beach to the west is one of the most popular on the island. After more than a decade of hard work by its many supporters, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial was dedicated on Aug. 6, 2011, during the annual Japanese American picnic at Pritchard Park, which can be reached by parking at the foot of Taylor Avenue. For a secluded escape, Gazzam Lake Preserve and contiguous properties offer more than 400 mostly wooded acres, including a quiet 14-acre freshwater lake/wetland area. Most folks head up Marshall Road past the recycling center and park at the north gate. For a real workout try the shoreto-shore walk.

At the north end of the lake, turn left and follow the signs down to the Close property. After a final precipitous hike, take a rest and enjoy the reward for your labor: an expanse of rocky beach on the banks of the spectacular Port Orchard Narrows. Two satellite properties off Crystal Springs Drive are well worth exploring. The Gazzam Beach property, Close Beach, stretches 550 feet along the rocky beach near the foot of Baker Hill Road. An upland area includes seven rough acres of green space. The park has no amenities at this point but offers spacious views. Just to the south, Point White Pier, a former Mosquito Fleet and ferry dock, is an ideal spot for fishing and scuba diving. Located a few miles north of Gazzam Lake Preserve at 8395 Fletcher Bay Road is Island Center Park, which includes a historic community hall and a picnic area on its three acres. The 90-year-old facility has a rich and varied history, and has a large room, corner stage for a variety of uses, a kitchen and two bathrooms. Its 5.5 acres bridges downtown to the harbor and features a covered picnic building, tennis courts, a lower picnic area, bandstand and boat launch. The connecting Waterfront Trail begins at the ferry and runs west along the water before turning up into downtown Winslow. Hawley Cove, just east of Winslow, offers good ferry watching and, at low tide, 330 feet of driftwood-strewn beach. Its 12 acres include a boardwalk through a wooded

A regulation soccer pitch and Babe Ruth baseball diamond (with grass infield) have vaulted the park to the pinnacle of island ball facilities. Rotary Park is another stop for sluggers with two baseball fields and a picnic area on 10 acres. It’s on Weaver Road between High School Road and Wyatt Way. Strawberry Hill Park, west of town, is a decommissioned Nike missile site from the Cold War era and the HQ for park district activities. district at 842-2306 for programs and rental) all on 25 acres. Also here: a world-class skateboard park, the Rotary Skate Bowl (helmets required). The park is off High School Road, between Fletcher Bay and Sportsman Club roads. Grand Forest, a 240-acre park in several parts, anchors a mid-island greenway and wildlife corridor. True to its name, the parcels include 75-year-old evergreen forest, wetlands and wildlife habitat that are popular with hikers, bikers and equestrians. Access the 2-mile marked trail in Grand Forest West and the small parking lot on Miller Road. A 2007 Land Trust acquisition will eventually open a public corridor between the western and northern portions of Grand Forest. The 1.2-mile Forest to Sky Trail begins at Grand Forest on Miller Road and dives west into robust woodland. Visitors cross a thriving wetland on a boardwalk and the ruts of a historic logging road before arriving at Battle Point Park. Though known mostly for its World War II military installations, Battle Point Park was named for a much earlier skirmish between a resident Suquamish band and raiders from a northern tribe. The park’s 90 acres of open space include two ponds (complete with ducks), picnic areas and a shelter, a smooth jogging/walking trail, a fitness course, several soccer and softball fields, two tennis courts, a roller hockey court, a sand volleyball court, two basketball courts, horse area and community gardens. The Battle Point Astronomical Association (www.bpastro.org) has an astronomy center in the former “Helix House.” To reach the park, take Miller Road to Arrow Point Drive. From the northern end of Battle Point take a trail across Frey Avenue to find Fairy Dell Park, a 2.5-acre nature area. The park includes shoreline access at the base of a sylvan ravine. Meigs Park is a 120-acre inland wetland and wildlife habitat intended for nature study. It is covered by a conservation easement held by the Land Trust. Access is off Highway 305 and Koura Road. Ted Olson Nature Preserve encompasses 15 acres of woods with a .3-mile nature trail, a small natural amphitheater and parking for 10 vehicles. The park is on North Madison Avenue, just south of Wilkes Elementary.

For a day out with a hoofed companion, Manzanita Park offers 120 acres of woods laced with horse and pedestrian trails. Its 2.27-mile nature trail is best enjoyed in late summer and early fall. There is also a covered picnic shelter and a controlled group camping area. The park is next to the Saddle Club off Day Road West. Hidden Cove Ball Fields, located on Phelps Road (northeast off Day Road and Highway 305), hosts ball fields and access to an extensive trail network. The 9.5-acre site has a Little League field and a soccer practice area. Take a trail north to Hidden Cove Park and another six-acre parcel, which has space for picnics, 200 feet of shoreline and a dock for small watercraft. Nearby T’Chookwap Park, maintained by the park district, is a half-acre water view property on Spargur Loop Road, with a footpath to the bluff overlooking Port Madison. Facing east on Puget Sound, Fay Bainbridge Park showcases a 1,420-foot sandy beach with impressive driftwood piles. It also has the only overnight camping facilities on the island, with 36 standard sites,

26 water-only hookup sites and 10 primitive spaces for tents. The park, which previously was a State Parks property, includes a play area, two covered picnic facilities, volleyball and campfire pits. Find the 17-acre park off Sunrise Drive. West Port Madison Nature Preserve has 13 acres with 0.2-mile of trail and picnic shelters, barbecue pits, and bird watching. From SR-305, follow West Port Madison Road to County Park Road and turn right. Bloedel Reserve, just north of Port Madison, is an internationally renowned public garden composed of 150 acres of forest, stately gardens, ponds, meadows, and the Bloedel family’s former estate home. This renowned garden welcomes the public. Go east on Agatewood Road to the gated entrance. Located deep inside Eagle Harbor off Weaver Avenue, the 4-acre Strawberry Plant Park property, once a berry cannery and commercial center, underwent shoreline restoration in 2011. It offers wildlife habitat, a non-motorized boat launch, picnic area, 80-foot-wide view corridor and a walking path with water access.

Local support helps island farms grow BY RICHARD D. OXLEY

Farming is a heritage on the island dating back to its first settlers in the late 1800s. Today it has become a point of pride for islanders who can see where their food is grown. Heyday is one of the newest among the islands community of farms that vary from blueberry patches to vineyards. Alice and Greg Skipton joined the island’s farming community in May 2011. Since then, they’ve grown Heyday Farm on two locations off of McDonald Avenue and Old Mill Road; 2012 proved to be a successful year for the young operation. “It’s been a really big year, and now we are kind of like ‘phew,’” Alice said. “It was kind of a watershed year.” From chickens to pork and a little produce too, Heyday Farm seemed to

fit right in on Bainbridge. “The community was so supportive,” Alice said. “They clearly want local food, produced ethically.” The island was certainly supportive. The farm worked up to producing 100 chickens a month and 30 dozen eggs a day. They even produced around 100 pigs for the year. By big-business agricultural standards, the numbers might not be so impressive. But for an emerging farm just getting underway, it came as a relief for the Skiptons. “We are a very small farm, especially related to how agriculture is today,” Alice said. Heyday products are now offered at the Hitchcock Deli and Pane D’Amore. To help grow the business even more, Heyday also opened a storefront in Lynwood.

Kia Micaud, one of the founders of Friends of the Farms, knocks apples out of a tree at Johnson Farm in preparation for last year’s Harvest Festival.

“We are looking to grow what people want the most of, like tomatoes and potatoes,” Alice said. “And just making it more convenient for people. You can get stuff online, subscribe or go to the Lynwood store.” The couple now looks ahead to further expand the farm’s ability to FARMS:

Local line-up can satiate any thirst Bainbridge Island is becoming a real glass act BY RICHARD D. OXLEY

Adding to Bainbridge’s signature trades such as agriculture and real estate, a cottage industry of imbibe enthusiasts has emerged to flourish in recent years. Wines, spirits, and now beer are all produced by islanders, for islanders, and beyond. The Bainbridge Island Brewing Company is the newest edition to the local line-up of wineries and an organic distillery. So far, business is good. “Things have been pretty fantastic,” said brewery founder Russell Everett. “We’re making a lot of beer and we’re selling a lot of beer. People seem to be really enjoying it and the island has really embraced the brewery.” The brewery’s tap room has been hosting islanders and visitors since opening on the Coppertop Loop in June 2012. “The tasting room is open every day and kids and dogs are welcome,” Everett said. As with other Bainbridge beverages, local businesses were eager to support their new neighbor. “We’re on tap at more than 40 locations,” Everett said. “Café Nola and Soup’r Burger pour us exclusively.” The brewery has also teamed up with its neighbor across the street, Bainbridge Organic Distillers, to create some unique brews. “We’ve been barrel aging some of our beer in their old whiskey barrels,” Everett said. “Ten gallons of that beer is gone in two days. If I open one of those barrels it doesn’t stay around.” The all-organic distillery began in 2009 when father and son founders Keith and Patrick Barnes began making their Legacy Organic Vodka. They soon added Heritage Gin to the lineup, followed by Battle Point Whiskey. The brewery and distillery came on the heels of multiple artisan wineries springing up at island homes as well as two estates operating for decades. It all adds up to quite a few stops on a tour of bottled delights spanning Bainbridge Island.

Richard D. Oxley / Bainbridge Island Review

After obtaining his law degree and passing the bar in 2012, Russell Everett founded the Bainbridge Island Brewery. He said he had two skills — law and brewing — but only one was in demand.

Bainbridge Island’s distiller is Washington’s only organic producer of spirits. Its whiskey is a fast seller and often sells out within days of each batch’s release.
