In his 40-plus years as a barber, Mike Hill of Hill’s Barbershop at 8147 161st Ave. N.E. in downtown Redmond has seen all sorts of hairstyles. From the shorter militarylike styles and the longer Beatles cut of the 1960s,

to the big, blowout ‘dos of the 1970s and 1980s, to the more varied styles of today, his clients have come in for years asking for just about everything. And Hill, who attended barber school in 1968 as a teenager, has complied and given them what they want — with the exception of a couple styles. “I’m a mullet-free zone,” he said. “I’m a combover-free zone also.” Hill began cutting hair around 1971 with his father, who started the barbershop [ more Hill’s page 5 ]

First, there was a pre-Valentine’s Day theft. Last weekend and on Tuesday, some police-dubbed “Brassiere Bandits” lifted merchandise again at the Victoria’s Secret store in Redmond Town Center. According to Redmond Police Department (RPD) officer Mike Dowd, two males and two females stole about $500-$800 worth of merchandise at about 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday. In the weekend thefts, males and females stole 48 bras worth $3,400 from the store in the 16400 block of Northeast 74th Street downtown, according to RPD spokesman Jim Bove. On Saturday at about 5:34 p.m., two black females took 15 bras worth $700 from the front display case. On Sunday at about 2:50 p.m., four to six males and females stole 33 bras worth $2,700 and fled the scene in a silver/grey SUV; no license plate information is available at this time. Bove said one to two suspects distracted the employees at the front counter while the other suspects stuffed bras into bags before the group departed the store. Earlier this month, Bove noted that two black females stole an unknown amount value of merchandise from the Victoria’s Secret front display case at about 5:43 p.m. on Feb. 13. Police responded to multiple downtown shoplifting reports that day, according to the Reporter’s police blotter. Redmond police are working with the Victoria’s Secret loss-prevention unit to determine how the store will proceed with the cases, Bove said, noting that the four thefts were caught on security video cameras. Shoplifting is a national problem with retail stores, Bove said, adding that thieves might take their high-dollar merchandise and try to sell it on Craigslist or ebay. Bove said that stores like 7-Elevens, which are well-lit and set up so employees can view each aisle, are less likely to be targeted by thieves than shops that feature large displays to attract customers, but might block employees’ views of shoplifters.

Emerald Heights continues its growth in serving seniors Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com

It’s been about eight months since Emerald Heights Retirement Community’s new fitness and wellness center has opened and the renovations continue. The 38-acre campus has a number of projects lined up including a new auditorium scheduled to open in April, three new dining venues that will be completed in the fall and a new apartment building with 43 units set to open late spring or early summer 2014. While the $7.8 million fitness and wellness center was the first major project to be completed at Emerald Heights, it is not the only one. Emerald Heights President and CEO Lisa Hardy said they have updated and renovated many common spaces throughout the community including the living room, clinic, country store, coffee shop and corridor. The campus also has a new chapel, the second

new building after the fitness and wellness center. Hardy said all of these projects allow them to continue with their mission of providing residents high-quality services and amenities, adding that the residents association has been heavily involved throughout the planning and design process. Residents formed task forces and provided the design team with ideas of what they want out of the building. “It’s very important because they’re the end user,” Hardy said about including residents in the planning process. “It’s all about them.” All of these projects will cost about $60 million and Hardy said Emerald Heights is in a good position financially to be able to maintain the campus and add amenities. The retirement community has recently refinanced its existing debt of $29.845 million, which previously had a variable interest rate. With the

refinancing, done through specialty investment bank Ziegler, Hardy said their interest rate is now fixed at 3.44 percent. “We’re able to get an amazing rate,” she said. Emerald Heights was able to achieve this after Fitch Ratings rated its financial situation. The retirement community received an A-, which Hardy said few businesses in the country have achieved. “Emerald Heights is one of the highest-rated retirement communities in the country, a testament to its prime location, beautiful campus and physical plant, a highly invested board and a very solid management team,” said Mary Muñoz, managing director of Ziegler’s senior living practice. “Locking in this layer of capital in today’s low-rate environment positions the organization well to take its next steps. Ziegler is pleased to partner with Emerald Heights as the organization seeks to grow and serve additional seniors.”

Shoulders are rather indispensable. And it’s amazing the things you can do with them when they don’t hurt all the time. If you’ve put part of your life on hold because of shoulder pain, then come to a free seminar at Swedish — the place that does hundreds of shoulder surgeries every year. An expert surgeon will answer all your questions about shoulder replacement, non-surgical options, and other sport-related injuries. So take the plunge. Our seminars take just two hours, and the rest of your active life is waiting.

The mission of Venues for Artists in the Local Area Eastside (VALA) is to connect artists to artists, artists to the community and the community to art and come next week, the nonprofit will be one step closer to achieving it. On March 8, the VALA Art Center will open at 7303 164th Ave. N.E. in Redmond Town Center. This center, according to the VALA website, will provide a space for “visual artists and the community to tap into their creative side and enjoy the visual arts.” “It’s a place where people can create, be inspired, see art,” said founder Jessica Lambert. She said the art center will allow VALA to put into effect all the things they have talked about since the organization started: a long-term space for programming and events, which can be difficult because they haven’t had a permanent location until now. The new center will feature artist residencies, artwork installations, public events, educational programs and other opportunities for local artists and the community to connect. Artists will also be able to host workshops and give art demonstrations at the center. In addition to the main space where events and programming will be held, there are also a resource center and studio. “We have a lot of space to create,” Lambert said. The all-ages center will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with evening events on the weekend. The first big event will be an opening party and artist reception from 6-8 p.m. on March 8. The reception will unveil the center’s inaugural installation, “Heavy Metal” by Shawn and Erika Simon. The City of Redmond’s poet laureate Jeannine Hall Gailey will also make an appearance and read a few poems. Music will be provided throughout the evening by Rulon Brown and Bill Horist. Other opening-weekend events include a free artist reception on March 9 at the Marriott Hotel in the town center from 3-6 p.m. and a free open house at the VALA Art Center from 1-3 p.m. on March 10. Although the art center is just opening this month, Lambert said they already have much of the year planned. There will be three artists in residence: Damian Grava of

the Redmond Clay Studio from April to June, photographer Debbie Donaway from September to October and fiber artist Suzanne Tidwell from November to December. Lambert said the artists in residence will be able to do installations and events to connect with the community. VALA has had an ongoing relationship with Redmond Town Center beginning with the arts festival in the summer of 2012. Later, there was the VALA Art Shop held in the same location as the art center, which was a venue for artists to sell their artwork, meet other artists and people in the community. Lambert said the artists involved were excited to be part of it and kept it open longer than they originally planned. “They took turns, they made it, they owned it,” she said. “That was obviously very encouraging.” With the shop’s success, Lambert said they pitched the idea of the art center to the managing office at the town center, who loved the idea — so much so that Redmond Town Center has donated the space to VALA. Lambert said as long as no long-term tenants want the

Many kind words for a cool coach I never knew Don Wong, but after attending Wednesday night’s celebration of life event for the popular coach, I feel as if I’m part of his extended family a little bit. Wong, who taught at Norman Rockwell Elementary School since 2000 and was with the Lake Washington School District since 1976, died on Feb. 12 of heart failure. On Wednesday night, current and former students, parents and faculty members gathered in the Redmond Middle School gym to share their remembrances of Wong. The seats on the floor and the grandstand benches were packed. The kind words flowed freely for two hours. It appeared that people didn’t want to leave, and that brought smiles to the faces of Wong’s sisters, Ann Cohen and Shirley Liu, and Liu’s daughter, Clarissa, who were seated in the front row. The stories that people told about Wong were inspirational and will surely stay with me and the others in attendance. I spoke with Cohen by phone from Portland two weeks ago for my story on Wong. She told me stories about her brother’s love for his students and how he was quite a talented rugby player — a sport he played until the age of 52. Andy Nystrom

I enjoyed hearing her tell these tales again in person — she’s got quite a way with words and has an infectious laugh. “He was powerful, fierce, independent and noble,” she said, adding that Wong had a great sense of humor and a hearty laugh. Norman Rockwell principal Kirsten McArdle said that Wong believed that each one of his students could find success on the playing field and in life. He made a difference. “We will miss him like crazy,” McArdle added.

I love Redmond, but I hardly know her — and that’s coming from someone who has volunteered in the community for 20 years. I bet all of you have that same feeling. But what if we could get to really know Redmond and what her residents aspire to — is that worth striving for? Yes, we have City Hall, nonprofits and service groups that do a great job serving those comfortable approaching them — but how many are too intimidated to go to a council meeting? How many are so new to Redmond they don’t know that Together Center or Hopelink exist to help those in need? Enter the library. I’ll wager it’s the most visited building in town, making it a great place to bring together residents for community building. More importantly, it offers a neutral space — no political or religious leaning there. The notion of a library as a space to build community was recently endorsed by the

American Library Association, which teamed up with a nonprofit called the Harwood Institute to provide a format for community dialogue. Fundamental to the Harwood strategy is to not presume one knows what the community wants to discuss but to invite residents to first answer these two questions: 1) What are your aspirations for your community? 2) What will it take to reach our aspirations? So here’s my pitch: If there’s a need for this type of community connection let’s get together at the library. I’m inspired to aspire for a more perfect union in Redmond — are you? If so, please contact me at miguel@ journalist.com or (425) 8023806 and let’s see if we can get to know Redmond better, together.

Wong, who was of Chinese descent, loved Hawaii and many of the people in attendance wore Hawaiian shirts and shorts. One by one, kids and adults took the microphone and spoke about how Wong inspired them to succeed and made them laugh and smile each day. With her voice shaking and hands gripped tightly around the mic, one young girl noted: “He was a really great coach that I will never forget.”

When it comes to food, it’s your money, your health I am a Northwest native, and have chosen to live in Bellevue and Redmond for the past 55 years. As a young man, I had the opportunity to work on my cousins’ farm in Minnesota and a dairy farm in Redmond in the early 1970s. I feel that farms and farmers are the backbone of America, and that family farms are the true expression of a free market. I just read about a 75-year-old soybean farmer taking agricultural giant, Monsanto, to the Supreme Court. What this case shows to me is that Monsanto is monopolizing the seeds that farmers use and, with the backing of the U.S. government, is destroying farmers’ freedom to choose from a diverse array of seeds. Monsanto’s goal is to be the sole source for crop seeds, which will damage the free market system in our country and hurt the few family farms that are still around. A few years back, one of Monsanto’s top executives stated that labeling food that had genetically engineered ingredients is like putting a skull and crossbones on the box or container. Kind of self-revealing. For all these reasons, I support Washington’s Initiative I-522 that would require the labeling of genetically engineered food in our state. I believe it is my right as an American citizen to know what is in the food I purchase. It is my right to know whether the food I buy has been genetically engineered. The giant corporations that are vested in genetically modified food will pour millions of dollars into fight-

ing to keep us in the dark. They will lie to the consumer about the costs of labeling. To date, they have invested millions into genetically modified food and care only about their profits. Many countries throughout the world have labeled or banned genetically engineered food due to health and environmental concerns. Please stand by me. It is your right to know what you’re buying. It’s your money; it’s your health. Protect our free market system and family farms. Say no to Monsanto and yes to I-522.

Jeffrey Wilson, Redmond

What’s to become of the United States Postal Service? The political “destruction” of an institution, mandated to exist by the US Constitution, is coming to a location near you. Why is this happening? What are some real consequences of the loss of the United States Postal Service (USPS)? In the 1970s, because of the rising political power of private “for profit” corporations such as Fed-EX, the USPS became “partially” divorced from the US government. The USPS was ordered by congress to implement a “nonprofit” business plan which would modernize itself and at the same time become totally free of “ALL” taxpayer support needed to accomplish this modernization, and the operation of the USPS itself. There was a catch to this legislation; Congress gave itself full oversight and bureaucratic control over the daily decisions and fate of the USPS. [ more letters page 5 ]

How parents can help students master test taking Although educators and administrators continue to debate the actual value of tests and examinations, testing has become an intrinsic part of the American education system. Neither students nor parents can escape the reality of exams, and continuing academic success largely depends on managing test anxiety and learning how

Doing homework assignments and participating in class help testing proficiency, too. “Make sure your child completes homework assignments and class projects,” says Richard Bavaria, Ph.D., senior vice president for education outreach at Sylvan Learning (www.SylvanLearning.

Health care costs are on the rise. Between a maturing baby boom population and an explosion of available tests, treatments and devices, Americans spend about twice as much per capita for healthcare compared to other western countries. Some experts warn that despite legislation like the Affordable Care Act that promises to expand quality coverage to everyone, there are still a lot of unknowns about the future of healthcare in this country. “Getting savvy about your health and the future of healthcare politics can help protect you and your family, no matter what trends we see in the years to come,” says Virgil Simons, Founder and

In 2012, Microsoft Corp. employees raised $105 million for nearly 19,000 nonprofit organizations through individual donations, volunteer efforts and company-wide fundraising activities. Of the total amount raised by employees, $60 million went to nonprofits in the state of Washington. Organizations that received the most cash donations in 2012 included United Way of King County, World Vision, Northwest Harvest, Hopelink,

According to the third annual Count Us In survey of homeless youth taken on Jan. 24, the number of homeless and unstably housed youth in King County grew by 10 percent in the past year. Friends of Youth (FOY) served as the Eastside host for Count Us In, which listed 776 youth and young adults ages 12-25 in its preliminary report. This year’s count included surveys at more sites than previous years, which may account for some of the increase. But the invisibility of the homeless youth population, who often resort to couch surfing and doublebunking, leaves many young people uncounted. About 12 percent of those counted were younger than age 18. Most of these young people who find themselves homeless and in need have little control over the circumstances that created an unstable home life, such as physical and sexual abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, poverty or being kicked out after revealing their sexual identity. To address this growing need, FOY provides shelter, housing and services that give these youth a home and a chance for success.

Seattle-area music typically brings to mind visions of young men with long hair sporting flannel, singing about teen spirit, a troubled boy named Jeremy or a black hole sun washing away the rain. But the Pacific Northwest is branching out from its long-established grunge image and beginning to make its mark in the hip-hop world. And two of the biggest names currently in the business are Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, whose bargain-hunting anthem “Thrift Shop” spent four weeks in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. The duo is currently on tour around the country and next week, they will be teaming up with another Northwest name: 2011 Redmond High School graduate Sam Roberts, who will be opening for the pair in their upcoming performance at Northern Arizona University on March 9. The performance is part of mtvU’s Woodies Tour, which honors and highlights “music college students love.” The opportunity to perform came about after Roberts, 20, heard Macklemore — whose real name is Ben Haggerty — and Lewis would be performing at NAU. Roberts, a sophomore at the school studying communications with a focus on advertising, contacted the event organizers and requested to open the show. The young aspiring rapper included links to his music in his request and then utilized social media to campaign for the gig. It took about two weeks for the school, MTV and Haggerty and Lewis to approve and grant his request. “Overjoyed,” Roberts said about how he felt when he received the news. “I was going crazy all day. It was unbelievable.” Roberts’ mother Miranda Roberts said their family — who now lives in Kirkland — is

has been particularly nice because it is usually the athletic department that gets highlighted, not the arts. The show sold out within two days of tickets going on sale and will be at the school’s Union Fieldhouse, which holds more than 2,000 people. Sam has vied to open for other acts who have performed at NAU, but this will be the first time his efforts have been successful. The fact that it’s for two artists from the same part of the country as him makes it particularly special for Sam. He added that the duo’s current popularity will hopefully bring more attention to Seattle-area hip-hop and eventually introduce more Northwest artists to the world. “We do have more than just rock and grunge,” Sam said. His interest in music began when he was younger, beginning with the guitar and then the drums. Sam also spent about a year on the turntables as a DJ but eventually sold his equipment and began writing songs, which he said allows him to be more creative. He emphasized that he mainly raps, admitting that he’s “not the best singer.” In addition to Macklemore, other emcees Sam named as influences include Nas, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly and the Nomads. While music may not be the most stable career path, Miranda said they have always encouraged Sam to pursue his passions and seeing his “talent for writing, performing and marketing combine in such a positive outcome is exciting for (them) all.” “We have always said that once he has his degree, he can select whatever career path he wishes,” she said. “Today he is studying communications with a major in advertising, so his passion for music and his promotion of that, could work well in tandem.”

The City of Redmond is seeking an artist or artist team to design integrated art and trailside interpretive features for the Redmond Central Connector (RCC) Phase II, a regional trail running through the heart of Redmond. The deadline to submit portfolios is 5 p.m. on March 19. The selected artist or team will join the RCC Phase II design team to develop and design integrated artistic touchstones, either real or virtual, that bridge nature and an evolving urban environment through contemporary art and design. The artist budget is up to $25,000. Building on the successes of the first phase of the RCC, which is currently under construction, the goals for this project include making the trail not just a place with art, but a place that is art. The master plan for the RCC is available at www.redmond. gov/rcc. “Our downtown is becoming more urban and while the connector will

serve as a vital transportation corridor, it will also be a place of contemplation and adventure,” said Redmond Parks and Recreation Director Craig Larsen. This call is open to individual artists or artist groups residing in the United States. Eligible artists and teams are invited to submit their qualifications and digital application materials for this open call by mail to: Attn: Joshua Heim, City of Redmond, MS: 4NPK, 15670 NE 85th Street, PO box 97010, Redmond, WA 98073-9710.
