Aviara apartments already filling up By Megan Managan

Though there is still some work going on in the newest apartment complex on the Island, tenants began moving into Aviara, the building located on 76th Avenue S.E., last weekend. The first phase of apartments is ready to go in the 166-unit building, with 54 available, the most common being the twobedroom, two-bathroom units. The building also includes studios starting at 500 square feet, all the way up to a 1,626-squarefoot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit with a loft. Community Manager Jeff Jagelski said the second phase will include 52 units, followed
by the final 60, which should be available by the end of May. There are a total of 26 different floor plans in the building. But what sets this building apart, according to Jagelski, are the details. “The high-end details,” said Jagelski, when asked what makes this building different. “The best views for apartments on the Island, the quartz counters and glass tile. The techno gym equipment. It’s definitely high end and the kind of thing people who live on Mercer Island want.” The units, all top of the line, feature exactly the kinds of things apartment hunters dream about. less steel appliances. And that’s just the kitchen. The master bathrooms all include soaking tubs, as well as generous walkin closets. Jagelski said each closet includes built-ins, and all of the units are one of two color schemes in the kitchen. Either a gray/tan counter, tile combo or a blue, white combo. Every unit also includes a washer and dryer. The building is going through the process of becoming a LEED Silver certified building, which will help its residents save money on utilities. Head to the top floor of the building and the already tall ceilings are close to 17 feet, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out toward Lake Washington on the northern side of the building. Facing out toward I-90 and the Lid Park, the top floor corner unit, which is one-of-a-kind in the building,
Mercer Island’s beloved True Value Hardware store has a new home. The store, soon to be displaced with the construction of the Legacy mixed use project, will remain in the Town Center. True Value will relocate this summer to the former Overlake Clinic space next to Walgreens at 7707 S.E. 27th Street. According to store owner, De Calvert, the agreement to lease the space was finalized over the weekend. Calvert signed a lease with MI Shopping Center, LLC. Island landowners, Gary Lewis and Mark O’Shea, are both partners.

True Value | FROM 1 According to leasing agent, Jay Azose, the new space is 5,700 square feet — slightly smaller than the store’s current location. Calvert said that she is glad to have the new space, but the process has been exhausting. “This has taken a tremendous [amount of] time and energy,” she said. “And there is a lot to do before we are done.” The new space will have to be completely gutted. It really has not sunk in yet,
she said of the change. “It is a bit smaller, but we will just have to make it more efficient,” she said. True Value’s present lease will expire in July. Legacy Mercer Island is a five-story residential and commercial project undergoing design review and permitting at the city. It will include 209 apartments, with a number of affordable units, 258 parking spaces, a public plaza, and commercial and retail space.

John Day Homes Has Plans for Your Land
Island home featured in 2013 Tour of Architects An Island home reimagined by Seattle architects, Chadbourne + Doss, is being featured in the annual regional Tour of Architects beginning at 11 a.m. on March 24. The Mercer Island house is a complete remodel of one of the iconic Seattle architect Fred Bassetti’s earliest designs. As the residence is on a busy street, the owners wanted to create a protective shelter for family life. While appreciating the classic modern structure, they wanted to simplify the floor plan, rectify years of alterations, and update the finishes. In doing so, the goal was to respect the original spirit of the design while making the house reflective of its owners, its time, and a celebration of its place.
You’ve picked the perfect place, now finish it off with the ideal home. With a truckload of different plans to choose from, local builder John Day Homes can help you build your custom residence pain-free. Contact us today to see what we can create for you.

The house was gutted to the studs and portions of the existing house structure, decks and site work were removed. The reconstruction uses new block forms to contain, articulate and separate programmatic functions. Clad in steel, Milestone plaster, and white lacquer, these blocks consolidate clutter and allow the remaining spaces to be open and clean. Large windows and doors were added and outdoor spaces were redefined. The entry was redesigned with a cantilevered concrete landing and a glass pivot door. The house won the esteemed Honor Award from the AIA Seattle in 2011. The architects will be on hand to meet-and-greet the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own home-design ideas to discuss with architects. For more information and tickets, go to www. tourofarchitects.com. facebook.com/MIReporter

Good news G
ood news for Mercer Island comes in the form of a signature. Mercer Island’s True Value Hardware has a new lease and a new home. The store will move to the Mercer Island Shopping Center into the former Overlake Medical Center, adjacent to Walgreens. The store will remain centrally located with plenty of parking just a few blocks from its present location on 76th Avenue S.E. Those who follow the City Council’s planning sessions and retreats already know that True Value’s new home is also the focus of a possible re-development into a multi-story building with 30 apartment units and more parking. The city has hired Lorig and Associates to help design a development package that will include a partnership with King County Metro to provide more parking and commuter services in the Town Center. The parking facility would be funded in part with $7.7 million from Sound Transit in the form of ‘mobility mitigation dollars.’ The payment of ‘mitigation dollars’ was set out in the hard-won 1976 Memorandum of Understanding regarding I-90. The MOA ensured that Islanders would be compensated for the loss of mobility and parking due to the increased use of I-90 via roadway or rail. If the plan goes forward, it would be a win-win for Islanders. For those who find there is no available parking at the Park and Ride after 8 a.m., it would mean more spaces for those who wish to head to Seattle either at rush hour or in the middle of the day. Or better yet, allow for a number of spaces set aside for Islanders in the Park and Ride and give other commuters parking options in the new facility. Perhaps those off-Island commuters might stop to do their shopping on their way home or meet friends for a bite before heading back. Such a place would provide shoppers with a place to park and leave their car to go from place to place in the Town Center during the day to run errands, visit the dentist or shop. Who knew that we needed a place to park before we could walk.
‘True Value has a new home; public dollars might pay for a new parking structure.’
ISLAND
TALK
To the editor Keep local businesses, community intact I join the chorus of voices urging the City Council and Planning Commission not to approve the design review for what is currently the block that houses True Value Hardware and the Islander. Both those establishments serve core needs of this community. They also create community on this Island. I cannot count the number of times I have run into friends or shared painting tips with fellow Islanders at True Value. And the staff there actually helps people like me who, in other larger, unnamed hardware stores across the lake, run in the opposite direction when I cross the threshold. As to the Islander, it is a rare family restaurant where a family can bring both picky seniors and picky kids — without pretension or fuss. And in summertime, the Islanders’ deck is a wonderful place for “crosstable” conversations. However, there is a larger, more ominous reason for the Council to preserve True Value and the Islander. We may be facing tolls that will make providing essential services (like a good hardware store) and amenities (like an affordable family restaurant) all the more important. The likelihood of tolls in some form makes it imperative that this community (and its leaders) preserve on this Island the core services we need (and the amenities if possible) to mitigate the cost of going “off Island.” I would love to see Mercer Island develop to be more like Madison Park — with real services available to the community. I do not object to increasing density, but density with-
out core services and the amenities that create community will harm this Island. And certainly none of us will be happy if we face tolls every time we realize we bought the wrong drill bit to fix the warped fence. Please keep Mercer Island a real community and a livable community: preserve zoning for True Value and the Islander (and businesses like them). They are irreplaceable. Suzanne Skinner
Where are the good neighbors? The Mercer Island Learning Lab 4-year-olds visit the Mercer Island Care and Rehabilitation Center at 7445 24th Street once a month for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes. They sing songs, read stories, use play dough and art materials with the residents. This intergenerational program was initiated by Gwen Lewis, a former teacher at Mercer Island High School some years ago. The Learning Lab has continued to carry
out her idea of intergenerational learning. This year our visits have been interrupted by the construction zone around the care center. Until now, we have found parking in the Island Corporate Center lot. Often, parents stop in the Island Crust Cafe for a coffee on their way to the Care Center with their children. This week we were warned that all would be towed without warning. Our visit had to be canceled. How sad that a building in our community could not welcome about 10 cars with 4-year-olds who were learning about another generation and bringing some joy into the residents’ lives. The Learning Lab visits one Friday a month during the school year for 45 minutes. None of the adults involved has ever seen the Island Corporate Center parking lot full. I realize that parking is difficult with all the construction zones in the business area, but couldn’t there

Grace Thurston Moore
Grace Moore was born January 18, 1917 in Paterson, New Jersey, the only child of Arthur and Grace Thurston. She attended Montclair State College where she earned a Bachelor and a Master Degree. She initially worked as a teacher until the start of World War II, when she went to work for Curtiss Wright Aeronautical Company as a test engineer. There she met Vincent, her beloved husband of 68 years. They were married in 1944. After the war she left Curtiss Wright to raise her family. She had three children, David, Geoffrey, and Sarah. She was a wonderful mother who was always present to help her children, constantly teaching and encouraging them, and supporting them in their own lives and dreams. She believed that education was very important. She was an avid reader and never stopped learning. In 1962, the family moved to Mercer Island. Grace was actively involved in Emmanuel Episcopal Church and she made many of her lifelong friends within that church community. She was the Director of Sunday School Education, a faithful member of the Altar Guild, and helped manage Emmy’s Attic which gave its profits for outreach for the church. She was always concerned with helping people in need. She believed strongly that outreach was one of the most important missions for the church. Family and friends were the most important part of Grace’s life. She was devoted to her husbandVincent and her children and grandchildren. She volunteered her time and talents to Emmanuel Church and Covenant Shores, where she and Vincent have lived since 1995. She was always there to help family and friends, and provide comfort to someone in need. Grace was a gracious lady. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was a gentle and caring soul. Her greatest gift she gave to her family and friends was her love, her constant presence, her ability to listen, and her unwavering support. Grace was preceded in death by her son David. She is survived by her husband Vincent Moore, her daughter Sarah Bostwick and her husband Tom Bostwick, her son Geoffrey Moore, and her grandchildren Colin Moore and Michelle Moore. Grace passed away peacefully on March 7, 2013 with her loving family by her side. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Mercer Island Covenant Shores Health Center for the wonderful care they gave Grace and their kindness to her family. Remembrances can be made to the Northwest Kidney Foundation, Seattle, WA or Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Mercer Island, WA. Missing grapefruit juice cues man to home burglary By Reporter Staff
A Mercer Island home south of the I-90 bridge was burglarized sometime during the night on Monday, March 11, in the 2600 block of 60th Avenue S.E. The 37-year-old tenant of a mother-in-law apartment on the property interrupted the burglary when he heard someone trying to enter his apartment. The tenant woke up at 3:22 a.m. when he heard someone attempting to unlock his front door, according to the police report. When he looked down from the loft, he saw the door open. He yelled, the door closed, and he went downstairs but saw no one outside. Police responded to the incident and woke up the property owner in the main house. The 61-year-old resident did not think the main house had been burglarized, and he went back to bed, according to the police report. When he was awake

Dorothy Virginia Stuckey
Dorothy Virginia Stuckey, 99, of Mercer Island, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013. She was born the youngest of four children on March 27, 1913 in Seattle, to Louise and George Ross. Dorothy attended Lincoln High School in Seattle, and earned her first paycheck as a beautician at a downtown Seattle beauty parlor. She married Minford Irwin Stuckey on December 10, 1933, on Mercer Island. Shortly thereafter they moved to Grand Coulee, where Minford worked on the construction of the dam. After living in a tent and one-room shack during the frigid winter of 1934, she assisted in the construction and operation of Stuckey’s Service Station, the town’s first. While in Grand Coulee, two of their five children were born. In 1943 Dorothy moved to the Groveland Park area of Mercer Island to live with her parents while Minford served overseas during WWII. Minford returned after the war’s end, and together they built a home on Mercer Island where they raised their family. Dorothy took joy in simple pleasures; the season’s first snowflake, the roar of the Blue Angels overhead, finding agates with her family on the beach at Lopez. She loved reading her Bible, playing the piano ragtime, gardening, canning, and baking. Her pies were legendary. At the age of 90 she enjoyed playing the piano for the “old folks” at the Norse Home in Seattle. She loved her family dearly, and spent her life showing them how much. Dorothy was preceded in death by daughter Jackie in 1952, and husband Minford in 2002. She is survived by sons Dan Stuckey (Laura) and John Stuckey (Laurie), and daughters Patty Buckingham (Duane) and Mary Larson. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and many other relatives and friends who loved her and will greatly miss her. A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, March 23, at Mercer Island Covenant Church, with a reception following. Remembrances are suggested to Focus On The Family, 8605 Explorer Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80995, or www. focusonthefamily.com 754639

consultants or on bicycle paths, parks and emergency response equipment? Good things can come from tolling. The first positive result of tolling would be fewer people coming from Bellevue to use the Mercer Island park-andride. Traffic congestion on the I-90 bridge would decrease as some commuters return to using SR-520. Other positive results might be the strengthening and diversifying of our businesses as Islanders choose to use on-Island resources instead of paying tolls. We could develop sophisticated carpooling systems and discover ways to increase bus ridership. We could save the tolls and the environment at the same time. We might be motivated to find the means to create affordable housing for school district and city employees so they can actually be a part of our community. These are just a few ideas, but with all the talent on the Island, we could come up with many more. Best of all, we could be a model for the rest of the state in how to be responsible for the choices we have made and demonstrate how to come together to as a community to create something positive out of a challenging situation.

a stray animal? A: First of all, be careful. Animals can be dangerous and not all are friendly. I would suggest you call animal control and alert them of the stray animal. If the animal is friendly and does not have a collar with a proper ID tag, you can transport the animal to a local vet (i.e. Mercy Vet – Mercer Island) or transport the animal to a local animal hospital that takes stray animals (Aerowood Animal Hospital – Bellevue). If those options do not work for you, you can call the police department, and we will try to make arrangements to identify the animal and reunite them with their owners. Though we encourage people to use animal control, we want you to remember we (the police department) are always here to help. Have a question for Officer Jira? Write to him at Rob. Tolls are way government can shape citizen behavior What is missing in the discussion of tolling I-90 is recognition that this is part of a plan by the WSDOT and the House Transportation Committee to have government shape citizen decisions. Tolling cannot only be used to collect large sums of money, it can also be used to compel citizens to conform to government ideals about how and when to travel, and how and where to live and work. Decisions formerly made by individuals are now routinely being made by government agencies. And yes, many or our so-called representatives think it best if they make more decisions for us. Washington, King County and Seattle legislatures have a solid history of defying the will of the people (witness the sport stadiums, car tabs, groceries sacks, and most recently the super-majority of the legislature required to raise taxes). Citizens must not assume those we elect and the agencies they are charged with overseeing are interested in preserving our freedoms. David McLaughlin, P.E.

Burglary | FROM 6 an hour later, he got up for a glass of grapefruit juice and discovered that the container of juice had been stolen out of his refrigerator. He then noticed that several drawers in his wife’s office, next to the kitchen, had been opened and rummaged through. The burglars entered through two unlocked dining room doors. The house alarm was not activated that night. Approximately $2,800 in ruby earrings and
precious stones from Pakistan were stolen, but sensitive financial information, several checkbooks and currency remained untouched. A drawer containing various keys was also rifled through, and keys to the resident’s business office, house and apartment might have been stolen out of it. Police searched the property with a K-9 unit. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene.

School briefs MISD parent survey deadline extended Each year the Mercer Island School District uses various methods to gather feedback from students, parents and staff about the schools’ effectiveness and areas of improvement. MISD encourages parents to participate and provide feedback. The survey can be found at: w w w. s u r v e y m o n k e y. com/s/EES2013. The survey deadline has been extended to March 22 to give parents more time to respond. In order to determine the MISD’s level of performance in comparison to other similar districts and schools in the state, MISD has contracted with the Center for Education Effectiveness to coordinate the survey administration. Students will be taking their survey during the school day within the next few weeks, and staff will take them during faculty meetings. Now in its fifth year, the Educational Effectiveness Survey (EES) is the primary tool that each school
uses to help measure their performance relative to the nine ‘Characteristics of Effective Schools.’ Parents, students and staff complete the EES each year with the results then used for school improvement planning. For more information, contact Jennifer Wright, executive director of Learning and Technology Ser vices (jennifer_ wright@misd.wednet.edu) or a school principal.
Free SAT and ACT tests at Island’s College Tutors office College Tutors invites college-bound 10th and 11th-graders to take a practice SAT or ACT test to gauge their current achievement level and readiness for college entrance exams. All colleges require either an ACT or SAT score to accompany applications. “College admissions tests should be taken seriously by students because solid scores can bolster a college application. In some cases, schools will even award scholarships for scores
that are in the top five to 10 percentile, states Learning Center Manager Mackenzie Krause. The tests will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, and noon on April 4 at 7605 S.E. 27th St. College Tutors mimics the setting and timing of the actual exams. Students and parents are invited to a complementary, individualized consultation to review scored exams and highlight areas of strength and weakness. Fewer teens use tobacco, alcohol but still need emotional support Youth survey reflects attitudes, behaviors of state’s 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th-graders By Reporter Staff
Fewer students are smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, according to a recent survey of kids in Washington state. At the same time, a large number of students seriously considered suicide in the past year. The number of secondary school students who believe using marijuana is risky dropped to the lowest level since the state started collecting data. The Healthy Youth Survey is taken every two
years by students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 in more than 1,000 public schools in Washington. More than 200,000 youth took part in the survey in October 2012 by answering a wide variety of questions about their health and health behaviors. All responses were voluntary and anonymous. The Healthy Youth Survey provides communities with needed information to make solid decisions about which health issues to focus on. “The physical and emotional health of our youth is crucial to their success in school, in work, in personal relationships, and in their communities,” said Department of Social and Health Services Secretary
Kevin W. Quigley. “It’s good to celebrate that fewer teens are using alcohol and tobacco, but it’s clear many teens need more support from the adults in their lives and from friends to make healthy choices and cope with challenges.” Survey results show that cigarette smoking is down in all grades. About 10 percent of 10th graders reported smoking a cigarette at least once in the past 30 days. That’s down from nearly 13 percent in 2010 and from 25 percent in 1999. Statewide, about 50,000 youth smoke — and 40 start smoking every day. “We’re certainly encouraged to see that fewer kids are smoking cigarettes,” said Secretary of Health Mary

Tips to avoid new scams targeting seniors By Reporter Staff
While we are all taught to use good manners when answering the telephone, not everyone who calls you necessarily has good intentions. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a recent spate of lottery scams or advance fee frauds originating in Jamaica are targeting seniors and other Americans by telephone. While the Jamaican and U.S. governments have teamed to tighten laws and combat the problem, it’s important to guard against becoming the next victim. Knowing the difference between legitimate telemarketers and scammers is crucial. Protect yourself by taking the following precautions: • Never pay money to collect supposed sweepstakes winnings. Legitimate operations won’t require you to pay to collect winnings. It’s against U.S. law to play foreign lotteries. If you get a call saying you’ve won one,
it’s probably a scam. • Never wire money to anyone you don’t know. • Ignore unsolicited calls from anyone, even charities and companies with whom you already do business. You have no way to confirm whether or not the caller is legitimate. Even caller ID can be faked. When in doubt, just hang up. • Place your telephone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. It’s fast and free. Visit www. DoNotCall.gov or add your number to the registry by calling (888) 382-1222 from the phone you wish to register. • Check unfamiliar area codes before returning calls. Be aware that there are many three digit area codes that connect callers to international telephone numbers. • If you don’t make international calls, ask your telephone provider to block incoming and outgoing international calls. • Never provide anyone with personal information,
such as bank accounts, pin numbers or Social Security numbers. • Prevent criminals from accessing your money. Contact your bank, brokerages, and the Social Security Administration to add a password to your accounts. • Scammers often create false deadlines. If you feel pressured, hang up. You’ve spent a lifetime earning your money. You deserve time to choose how to spend it. • Help others from falling victim to scammers by warning friends and family. If you’ve received a call, mail or email that you think might be from a scammer, report it to the Federal Trade Commission by calling (877) FTC-HELP (877-382-4357) or contact local authorities. You don’t have to live in fear to avoid being a victim. By becoming informed of the latest tactics used by scammers to defraud consumers, you can protect yourself and your finances.

The Den is the building’s lounge for residents that opens out to the courtyard. There is parking on two levels for residents,
which starts at $75. The main floor of the parking garage is largely for the retail portions of the building. Wallace Properties is managing the retail properties in the building, which has room for seven different businesses. Monica Wallace, who is handling the retail spaces, said they are in negotiation with a business that would take up three of the spaces along the left-hand side of the building. The rest of the units are ready for businesses to start construction, Wallace said. The spaces range from the smallest of 777 square feet, to the largest at 2,336 square feet. According to the Wallace Properties website, the spaces all run for $26-$30 per square foot. Aviara is open for tours seven days a week, Monday through Wednesday; and FridaySaturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The building is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. To learn more about the space, visit miaviara.com or call (877) 757-1223. MORE ONLINE mi-reporter.com

It’s time to enroll Even though summer seems far off, enrollment for day camps and summer camps has already started in many districts. As space at camps and day programs is usually limited, it is important to talk to your children now and decide where and how they want to spend their summer vacation. A multitude of camps propose many different formulas. Begin by carefully evaluating the personal needs and wishes of your child. The first thing to consider is the choice between a summer camp and a day camp. Longer or shorter stays are
usually an option at either one. The main difference, of course, is that the former includes on-site lodging and full meals, while the latter only includes daytime activities, according to a fixed or variable timetable. As a parent you will have to decide if your child is really ready to sleep away from home — and you — for a long or short period of time. If you feel your child is not yet ready to sleep away, in the care of teenaged camp counselors and their adult supervisors, day camp offers the possibility of summer programming with a happy return home every evening. The next choice to make is the type of camp that your children will attend. Traditional camps are centered on outdoor activities, such as nature walks, swimming and boating skills, while specialized camps are designed to satisfy a child’s more specific interests through programs based on the arts, sciences or sports.

Most years, summer seems to fly by fast. But that wonderful, warm season can seem very long when you’re not prepared. To ensure that you can give your children the best summer ever, look into the variety of summer camps offered in our region and book them in early. These days, summer camps offer an astonishing breadth of choice for all kinds of interests. Traditional outdoor activities, science, sports, arts, language immersion and scouting are just some of what’s available for kids. It is worth taking the time to browse the options along with your children; their comments will reveal exactly what is most likely to work for them. Know how to listen and be decisive. Maybe your children have already
experienced summer camp, in which case you’ll be able to make a choice according to their likes and needs. You could also find out about camps that their friends go to, as they will probably be tempted by the same ones.
If none of the camps available are of interest to them, you could compare the different possibilities yourself. There are general camps suitable for a wide range of children, while there are many others that aim to develop one particular strength. You could even take into account their school work or their personal aptitudes to help you come to a decision. Is it still hard to decide? Just follow your instincts. Book a short
week instead of a full summer away, and then you’ll know for next year. And share all the positive experiences you had as a child at summer camp, or even better, show them some photos of your own lifelong summer camp memories. Browse the different types of camps with your children: sciences, sports, arts, scouting and language immersion are just some of the choices.

Mercer Island starts season with two wins, two losses By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
It’s a new season for the Mercer Island baseball team, and with that comes a new field. The team got good use of the new turf infield, playing two games on it early last week, in conditions that might have caused cancellations if not for the new field. The Islanders finished the week with two wins and two losses. On Monday, March 11, the team dedicated the new field and went on to beat Kennedy Catholic, 4-2. Kennedy was the first on the board, scoring a run in the second inning, but Mercer Island responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1. Kennedy made it 2-1 in the top of the fourth, followed by another tying run from Mercer Island to make it a 2-2 game going into the fifth inning. It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth when Mercer Island broke through, scoring two runs to take the 4-2 lead and the win. Kennedy had four hits in the game and one error, while Mercer Island had six hits and one error. Mack Schlamp was 2-3 at bat with two runs, while

Nick Chandler was 1-4 at the plate with 2 RBIs. The next afternoon, this time in even rainier conditions, the team faced off against Garfield. Mercer Island won 5-3 over the Bulldogs. The Islanders took an early lead, up 2-0 at the end of the first inning. It didn’t take long to expand on the lead, adding three runs in the top of the second for a 5-0 lead over the
Bulldogs. Garfield pushed back, scoring twice in the second before the bats for both squads went quiet until the fifth inning when Garfield added its third and final run of the night. The Islanders, who beat Kennedy on Monday, had five runs off of seven hits and two errors in the game, while the Bulldogs had three runs off five hits and one error. We spend way too much time watching and way too little time participating. You are your children’s role models. What you say, what you do, what your interests are and efforts reflect are all being absorbed. We have two very active boys, and sports will play a big part of their physical upbringing, but mainly as a participatory outlet for the tons of energy they each show.
Games are games, and going to a Seahawks game or a Mariners game will be great fun. It’s natural for children to grow fond of a particular athlete, and we’ll try to be aware and always distinguish between the immense skill set and any character issues that arise. What I hope is that the sheer joy of the sport itself, and not the emulation of a particular person, will be the motivator for a lifetime of athleticism and health.
That the simple pleasure of playing catch on a warm spring day is what they’ll remember years later as they repeat the act with their children. We all work hard and deserve some time to relax, and undoubtedly cheering for the Sounders is a great outlet untao itself. But maybe the day after the game, grab a soccer ball and head for the park to show your kids what sports feel like, and not just look like.

OPEN HOUSE: A WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY
THE HALVORSON CANCER CENTER
EvergreenHealth Medical Center—Kirkland Saturday, March 30 11:30 am - 2:00 pm We cordially invite you to be our special guest to celebrate the opening of the new Halvorson Cancer Center on the main Kirkland campus of EvergreenHealth. Join us on Saturday, March 30, from 11:30 am to 2:00 pm to dedicate this new comprehensive center to you—our patients, families, survivors and caregivers who believe in a place where hope lives. The new center seamlessly aligns all cancer care and supporting services in a beautiful, integrated facility like no other on the Eastside, specifically designed with our patients’ and your family’s perspective and comfort as a guiding force. The opening of the new center also celebrates the recent collaboration between EvergreenHealth and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, which brings SCCA’s leading-edge cancer research together with EvergreeHealth’s commitment to innovation and compassionate care to provide our patients with nationally recognized cancer care. We hope you will join us for this dedication event to celebrate where hope lives at the Halvorson Cancer Center. Enjoy light refreshments, guided tours and the opportunity to connect with neighbors and friends from EvergreenHealth and SCCA.
