Council approves measure, prohibits Section 8 discrimination BY CARRIE RODRIGUEZ crodriguez@kirklandreporter.com
By the end of this month, Paul Morris will be homeless. He volunteers for the City of Kirkland as a communications specialist and for King County’s Public Health Reserve Corps as an emergency medical technician. “I am dying to get into paramedic school so that I can provide means for my family to not ever have to visit a Section 8 voucher again in their lifetime,” Morris said during a public hearing on Tuesday, before the Kirkland City Council voted to approve a Section 8 ordinance
that prohibits landlords from refusing to rent a unit based on a tenant’s use of a Section 8 voucher. “I plead with you to at least level the playing field for those like myself who love living here in Kirkland.” During the public hearing, 35 people addressed the council. For the 26 people who spoke in favor of the measure, the most common thread was the ordinance would prohibit discrimination. Several spoke poignantly about firsthand experiences as Section 8 tenants. A former Lake Washington High School basketball coach was found not guilty March 22 of charges filed last year for communicating with a minor for immoral sexual purposes. Following a five-day trial, a jury reached its verdict within five minutes after closing arguments at Kirkland Municipal Court that afternoon. Barry Thatcher Johnson resigned as coach last March after the Lake Washington School District launched an investigation into the allegations. During the trial, the defense highlighted many inconsistencies in complainant Page Watkins’ statements. The city prosecutor was unable to provide substantial proof that Johnson committed the criminal acts, as they had the burden of showing proof. James Bible, Johnson’s attorney, said after having reviewed “all of the evidence, interviewed all of the witnesses, collected 122 page statements from [the complainant], it becomes crystal clear that this didn’t happen. Period.” Johnson, who was also an instructional assistant, was put on leave Dec. 13, 2011 after Watkins, then 17, left her material science class, where Johnson assisted, and told the school counselor and associate principal that Johnson allegedly sexually harassed her for at least one month, according to the charges. [2] March 29, 2013 [ wilson from page 1] has played for many teams in both football and baseball. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies and played football for two universities. “I have been a lot of places and there is nothing like here,” Wilson said. “This city is unbelievable.” Before being drafted Wilson said he put his faith in God, put the names of all 32 NFL teams into a hat and pulled out the Seahawks. “I don’t have highs and
www.kirklandreporter.com lows because I play for Him,” said Wilson. “I have no nerves.” Wilson is known for his work ethic. In college he played both football and baseball and took 18 credits per quarter to graduate early. That work ethic has stayed with him as he arrives at the stadium three hours early on game day to prepare. “It is amazing, there are already people in the stands,” Wilson said. “The energy in that stadium when I walk out
there is amazing. But I play for an audience of one.” But it was his leadership that helped the inordinately short quarterback succeed. “I always step in the huddle thinking this is the play,” Wilson said. He said that beating the Packers on Monday night was one of the biggest games of the season. “You could literally feel the field shaking,” said Wilson. But the biggest win of the season for him came against
New England because he beat a man he truly respects quarterback Tom Brady. Wilson’s lofty aspirations for his team and himself charged up the crowd. “I want to be like Peyton Manning, where guys talk about him as one of the smartest guys to play the game. But I also want to have that competitive edge that people talk about Tom Brady. But I also want the feet of a Drew Brees, a guy that is ridiculously athletic and can make every single throw. I want to have it all to be honest,” Wilson said to a room full of laughter that grew into applause. “I don’t think anything can stop me when I trust in Him.” Wilson discussed the roots of his faith in God and that he wasn’t always a good person. “I was a bad kid,” he said. “I was the kid that hit people.” But it changed when he was 14. “I had a dream that my dad passed away and Jesus came into the room,” said Wilson, who posts a Bible verse each day to his Twitter account. “That was when I gave my life to Jesus. He is not shy about his faith. “You have to stand for something and He has given me this tremendous platform,” Wilson said. He talked about the influence of head coach Pete
Carroll, who like Wilson is eminently positive about life. “He is the second oldest coach in the NFL but he acts like he is 35,” Wilson said. “He is always trying to race me to the end of the field and then says ‘got you.’ I am like ‘slow down, you’re gonna pull a hamstring.’” The quarterback believes in miracles. “I should not be in the NFL - I am 5-10 and fiveeights,” said Wilson, who turned down a million-dollar contract in baseball to take a chance with football. “All the adversity and naysayers, God doesn’t care about that.” Wilson said that his life consists of football and hanging out with his wife and three dogs. The couple took their honeymoon in Dubai. “That is the only place I have gone outside of the country other than (the Seahawks game in) Toronto,” said Wilson. “I want to go someplace after every year we play in the Super Bowl.”
Hall of Fame The inclusion of Wilson made for a very successful night, drawing nearly 600 people and raising thousands of dollars towards athletic scholarships. Northwest University honored one of its greatest basketball players during the event, as Wes Davis was
inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame. Davis, who played for the Eagles from 1998-93, led the team to a Division II National Championship during his senior season. But his collegiate basketball career started on a tragic note. During his freshman year one of the team vans was involved in an accident. The van flipped over four times. “I should have died,” said Davis, who is pastor at newlife church in Silverdale, Wash. “We thought that our coach wasn’t going to make it.” But sitting in the field, waiting for help and seeing the body bags laid out on the ground Davis said he felt something. “There was a sense of peace. I knew God is real,” said Davis, who grew up in Tacoma and went to Wilson High School. “Something special happened and we started trusting in each other.” He said that the accident sowed the seeds for what the team would accomplish. The event also honored the school’s Athletes of the Year. Men’s basketball player Michael Greene won the award for the second consecutive year. Soccer player Stephanie Cummins and volleyball player Heather Shulke tied in the voting and both were given the honor for best female athlete.

Deputy Mayor Doreen Marchione, who has known Sternoff for more than 10 years, said “he’s served the region well from the different committees he’s served on and chaired. Kurt Triplett, city manager, said anyone who is qualified and has been a Kirkland resident for at least a year can apply for the vacant seat. “I don’t believe that council members have anyone in mind. Everyone’s still reacting to the news,” said Triplett of Sternoff’s resignation. The council will decide during its April 2 meeting in open session the process for how nominations for appointment will be conducted. The regular meeting begins
at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the council chamber, Kirkland City Hall, 123 Fifth Avenue. During that meeting the council will also set the deadline to make a decision on the appointment. Triplett expects the council will make the decision before the filing period for the November election, which is May 13-17. The appointed council member will serve until the November 2013 election is certified. If that person stands for election and wins, he or she will continue to serve. If another person is elected to fill the vacancy, the person elected will take office when the election is certified and would serve the remainder of the unexpired term. I’ve had doors slammed in my face because they refused to even consider taking someone of a limited income,” said Grogan. “The content of a person’s character, not their rental income, should be the criteria of whether or not they can rent an apartment.” When landlords have found out that longtime Kirkland resident June Banahan has a housing subsidy, she said most have treated her with “silence, resentment and hostility.” While employment has remained inconsistent with her due to her medical issues, she said she is an ideal tenant. She said she doesn’t have a criminal record, she has a spotless rental history and she’s even passed Secret Service background checks to have lunch with the First Lady. “The consistent story that I hear is that people won’t get their money back if a
Section 8 resident destroys their property,” said Banahan. “Someone’s status or lack of status, money or lack of money does not determine someone’s integrity or worthiness.” However, Sean Martin said the Section 8 measure was not a discrimination issue. “People do not choose to deny someone housing because of their Section 8 voucher,” said Martin. “They choose to not rent to a Section 8 [tenant] because the program itself and the fact that it simply doesn’t work for all business models for rental property owners.” Susan Musi, who also opposed the measure, agreed. “To make landlords operate private business on their private property by this sort of thing doesn’t make any sense,” said Musi, who owns a small property rental. “These are private businesses and really what you are doing is you’re essentially saying well there is such a thing as economic inequality.” She added that she recently moved to Kirkland because

EDITORIAL
Sternoff’s abrupt resignation leaves questions
I
t is a matter of trust when a person is elected to office. From judges, to school board members, to the President of the United States, the public puts their trust in the hands of those chosen to represent them. That trust is what our system of government is based on. Longtime Kirkland City Councilman Bob Sternoff abruptly resigned from office on Monday with nearly two years left in his term. In his resignation letter to the city, Sternoff said simply: “Effective this date, I hereby resign my position as a Kirkland City Council member.”The short letter was simple and to the point - but it explained nothing. It leaves Kirkland residents wondering why. Don’t Kirkland citizens who elected Sternoff deserve more of a reason? Don’t the people who have supported Sternoff deserve more of a reason? Don’t the people who paid for the election deserve more of an explanation? Any explanation. Many people in Kirkland gave their time and money to elect and re-elect Sternoff. They have supported him as he has supported them. Don’t they deserve a reason as to why he will not fulfill his duty to the city? Many people felt betrayed when Sternoff sent inappropriate messages using his city email in 2009. But he never resigned. He weathered that storm and was cleared of any wrongdoing because the council did not have a code of ethics at the time. He endured Kirkland residents speaking out for weeks during the public comment portion of council meetings calling for his resignation. But he never resigned. The email investigation, along with an investigation into
another council member, contributed to the council passing a code of ethics in 2012. He also endured opposition to his re-election in 2011. Sternoff won his re-election because his supporters stood behind him in the face of adversity. Many of those people supported him because of his tireless work on behalf of the city. Sternoff has been a fierce advocate for Kirkland and worked hard behind the scenes. He has served as a city representative as chair of the Suburban Cities Caucus to the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Planning Board. He was also an executive board member of the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) and a board member of the PSRC Transportation 2040 Prioritization Working Group. He has donated his time and money to city and community events for more than a decade. Several council members have given statements about how much they valued Sternoff ’s experi-
ence, guidance and advice. But this is not about what he has done for the city. It is about explaining why he is walking away from his commitment to more than 80,000 people. The city will now have to find a replacement for Sternoff and that person will be elected, not by the citizens of Kirkland, but by the city council. Does it matter why Sternoff resigned? Yes. Without a reason or statement, people will speculate. Without a reason, a cloud of suspicion will hover. The reason why Sternoff resigned has a bearing on how the city moves forward. If it is because of personal financial issues, say that. The public will understand. If it is family reasons, the community will support you. But leaving it open-ended with a one-sentence resignation leaves the people of Kirkland wondering why now? Why can’t you serve out your term like you did during past opposition?

What an interesting article regarding Kirkland Councilman Bob Sternoff. Granted, it’s mostly a load of crap, but an interesting read nonetheless. If nothing else, it goes to show how careful manipulation of facts can make someone appear to be either a hero or a villain. Glossing over the wreckage left by the former employee’s theft and fiscal backstabbing is the second of several glaring and egregious faults in this hit piece. The first was including “elderly couple” in the article’s title. It was worded to elicit the most visceral response from the Reporter’s readers. Next week will we hear about kittens, babies and nuns? And what’s the deal with referring to the complaining witness by her fun, first name “Julie?” I mean, who could distrust someone named Julie? Yet nowhere is Mr. Sternoff referred to as “Bob.” Does “Julie” have a last name? An employer? The Reporter was happy to fully identify Mr. Sternoff, why not his accusers? “The former employee who asked to remain anonymous...” Jeeez, ya think?
What kind of reporting is it to base a majority of quotes on an unnamed source? Eight separate paragraphs with direct, damning quotes and this clown is still allowed to hide behind anonymity? This isn’t yellow journalism, it’s browner than yesterday morning’s present from your shitzu. The last seven years - the Great Recession - is unlike anything anyone currently in business has ever experienced. Every legal source of funds available is being tapped to keep most of the nation’s small businesses afloat. Borrowing from an owner’s retirement funds, taking loans from relatives and yes, even client loans are used everyday to keep the financial ballet moving forward. One false move and the entire choreography falls apart. And the theft of over six figures from Bob Sternoff and his company certainly qualifies as a “false move.”

Thanks for brave reporting of Sternoff ’s issues My thanks go to the staff of the Kirkland Reporter for the brave
reporting in last week’s article regarding (now former) Councilman Bob Sternoff ’s financial issues. Clearly this job took a great deal of time and effort, and the residents of Kirkland are better off because of it – better off because we now know that there is a voice out there that will not tolerate misdeeds and disrespect on the part of our officials. In the past I have felt that the Reporter looked at people, events and situations in a shallow way, not really digging deeply into what was behind the apparent facts and happenings. The result was incomplete reporting of events - muddled “news.” With the Sternoff piece the Reporter did a bang-up job of investigative reporting. They have facts, a logical presentation and sufficient content to tell the story. Kudos to editor Carrie Rodriguez, reporter Raechel Dawson and assistant editor Matt Phelps. I hope that the Reporter’s new outlook will give residents of Kirkland a fighting chance to have our voices heard by a broader audience when we have issues or concerns that aren’t gaining any traction with our officials. Keep it up, Kirkland Reporter! I also urge anyone who has the temperament and an interest in the
position of council member to consider tossing her/his hat into the ring.

City should forge ahead with trail development I’d like to offer but one, of many, reasons why the City of Kirkland should correctly forge ahead with development of a trail in the Cross Kirkland Corridor. It was the “top priority” recommendation of the Urban Land Institute, a nonpartisan organization that is long recognized as one of America’s most respected and widely quoted sources of objective information on urban planning, growth, and development of sustainable thriving communities worldwide. Our council sought an objective opinion about Totem Lake and how Kirkland might help spur development there. In a report entitled “Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance Panel Recommendations to the City of Kirkland on Totem Lake,” ULI most strongly recommends the development in the BNSF Corridor of a trail … a “trail has the potential to brand [ more LETTERS page 5 ]

While I like the look of the Kirkland Police Department’s new Dodge Chargers I honestly think the strobe lights are a hazard. I’m not certain what candle power is but it seems too much. I think the idea would be to provide safety so that people can see the stopped squad car. These lights are extremely abrasive from even a half mile away. I think they’re unnecessarily bright and in my case causes temporary blindness. I’m very concerned they will cause an accident or possibly even trigger a seizure in someone. I would ask the brass at the police department to please do some further research before they change out or order anymore units with this light configuration.

play should really feel good about their actions, but I cannot help but chuckle when I think of all those people who “cheated” to avoid the traffic mess only to find that the reason for this mess were the ones before them who were doing the exact same thing as they were! Of course, the same argument could be made that if those on the road just stopped and let 15-20 “cheaters” in at a time, that we could have also avoided the mess. There would have been no traffic jam tonight if people did not put themselves and their personal desires above everyone else’s. Perhaps when I think about it with a cooler head, this story is about more than just a long evening stuck in traffic, perhaps it is one of the fundamental problems that we as a society are struggling with on a daily basis. Every 2-year-old knows the meaning of fair when it benefits them, but very few of us, at any age, understand the meaning of fair when it benefits others.

The city is actively pursuing codes and regulations that encourage re-development in the area, and promote a more integrated, vital and sustainable neighborhood that will responsibly help fulfill Kirkland’s designated share of the anticipated growth in the region. The ULI’s recommendation to develop a trail in the corridor suggests one very important project that will facilitate meeting those GMA goals. Kirkland citizens support the City of Kirkland moving forward with an interim Trail, while yet planning for high capacity transit in the future when the Corridor can be designed and engineered to 21st century transit standards, not relegated to 1900’s technology that existing heavy rail represents.

But I do enjoy a short stroll near my home. If the McLeod building goes through with all the extra traffic I will be afraid to venture out. I fear for the safety of all my friends at Merrill Gardens. At present there are more than 100 residents in the home. I have really enjoyed downtown Kirkland and the lake and do feel it will lose the charm with a huge office building and parking garage and more traffic congestion in the town.

Council votes MRM rezoning request to be studied this year BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@kirklandreporter.com
A
fter years of Planning Commissionrelated delays, the Kirkland City Council voted last week that 2013 will be the year to study a rezoning request that, if approved, would allow the construction of an eight-story apartment complex with retail in a commerciallyzoned district in downtown Kirkland. The MRM Private Amendment Request (MRM PAR), initially filed in 2010, was voted into the 2013 Work Program with a 6-1 council vote, despite Planning Commission members’ recommendation the proposed amendment be folded into the citywide Comprehensive Plan update. “They basically just reaffirmed the original direction they gave the Planning Commission the first time around,” said MRM PAR applicant Joe Razore, vice president of the Broderick Group in Bellevue. “So, we’re three years into this process and finally moving.” The MRM property is a 1.7 acre lot located at 434 Kirkland Way and is being leased to Microsoft until 2015. It is surrounded by the Kirkland Performance Center, QFC in Parkplace Center and the Emerald Building, which hosts business such as Davidson and Kilpatric PLLC and Bright Horizons. Razore’s zoning amendment proposal seeks to allow a height increase from the current five-story maximum height to eight stories. Razore also wants to add more residential use to
the current commerciallyzoned area. The existing zoning for the MRM site only allows residential uses within 170 feet of Peter Kirk Park and limits total residential to 12.5 percent of the gross floor area of the development. The MRM PAR was intended to be specifically for the site, but after the Planning Commission’s recommendation, the council voted 4-3 for the Work Program’s study area to include all of Central Business District 5. In early March, Planning Commission vice chair Jon Pascal said there is not a high potential other property sites in that zone would be affected because they have already been redeveloped. “When you look at all the properties in that zone, the only one that has a realistic chance to be redeveloped is this site,” Pascal said, referring to the MRM property. In a March 6 letter to the council, Razore explained that several years ago his family purchased the one-story building, which was formerly occupied by Bungie, Inc., a video game developer company that created the Halo video game, among others. Razore’s vision, which includes a grocer or drugstore-type retailer at the base with high density apartments on top, is looking ahead after Microsoft’s lease expires. He says it is intended to accommodate the 2,000-plus office employees expected with the development of Google’s expansion and Parkplace’s 1.2 million-square-foot of-
fice structure. “When Touchstone came along and got their big rezone, we felt that it would be in the best interest of the city and our property to build something that compliments Touchstone’s vision for Parkplace rather than compete with their vision,” said Razore. “So if you bring another 250,000 square-feet of office here, you’re going to bring cars for those as well.” Razore believes the apartment complex could help alleviate some of Parkplace’s future traffic issues and has offered to fully fund the Environmental Impact Statement to evaluate his rezone request. But Ken Davidson, an attorney with Davidson and Kilpatric PLLC, said rezoning CBD 5 to eight-stories would further cement the precedent after Parkplace’s approved eight story zoning in 2010. “MRM is coming in and doing exactly what the opponents of Parkplace feared. They’re saying ‘you gave Parkplace eight stories, give us eight stories,’” Davidson said. “People were opposed to going to eight stories because they feared it would take away from the look and feel of Kirkland.” Although Davidson acknowledges his office building’s view would be completely obstructed if the eight-story apartment complex was built, he says changing a commercial district for residential use restricts the opportunity for office buildings and therefore more high-paying jobs. “This is where we’re going to attract the kinds of employers that we want in

The Emerald Building sits behind a one-story building on the 1.7 acre MRM site. The latter building is currently leased to Microsoft until 2015. The council will vote later this year on a rezone request that would allow the site to construct an eight-story apartment complex with retail base. RAECHEL DAWSON, Kirkland Reporter our community, to provide the kinds of jobs that allow people to both live and work here,” Davidson said, who served on the Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce in the early 1990s. “That’s why in CBD 5 in the Comprehensive Plan, it identifies CBD 5 as the ‘employment center,’ and why the zoning code says commercial and office. It does not include multi-family.” Davidson points out that Kirkland will be damaging its brand among professional firms if an apartment building with barbecues and plastic deck chairs obstructs the views from some prominent office buildings, such as the Emerald Building and the Continental Plaza, in the surrounding area. An office building, he says, would ease his concern.
There is also a speculation of whether Parkplace will ever secure a tenant for their planned eight-story office building, but Razore said if national tenants see “shovels in the ground” on his site, then hopefully it could help Parkplace “land the tenant” they need next door. “We want to build something that’s great for Kirkland,” Razore said. “We’re long-term holders, our family has been [on the Eastside] for three generations. We don’t plan on going anywhere so the last thing we want to do is go build something for the city that doesn’t work for us.” Although the vision for his rezone request is still in the preliminary stages, Razore said he “loves buildings that look like they’re built
on top of older buildings” because it’s as if the building is “connecting yesterday to today.” Razore said he welcomes and is very open to all ideas and opinions for what could be done with the site. As soon as the environmental review is complete, which will likely be complete by late summer or early fall, the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing. After the public’s comments are taken into consideration, Planning Commission members will make a recommendation to the council. The council would then vote on the zoning code by the end of the year. with the best competitive scores will advance to the final round, with the winner to be named April 5. The six teams competing in Week III of the competition brought in more than 3,700 pounds in donations, bringing the total so far to more than 10,000 pounds of food. The drive is patterned after the famous national spring college basketball tournament, matching businesses in weekly competitions to see which one can bring in the most food. Each week, the winning business in every bracket will advance to the following week. To ensure that businesses of all sizes are able to compete on a level playing field, the
competition uses a unique scoring system: the total pounds of food donated by a business are divided by the total number of employees, resulting in a competitive “score.”
Team members include Steven Anton, Gordon Walsh, Jacob Wall and Regan Colburn. Teams needed to qualify through a series of tournaments throughout the school year to participate. Sixty teams from all around the Northwest, including teams from, Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia, qualified for the Washington VRC Tournament. Four team members worked all day to make it through the preliminary rounds to qualify for the final rounds. Three teams competed in the final rounds against some of the best VEX Robotics teams to win the tournament.

Kirkland man facing vehicular homicide charges in bicyclist’s death A Kirkland driver who allegedly drifted across several lanes of traffic on Evergreen Way last October and struck a bicyclist is facing vehicular homicide charges. A police investigation found that the 56-year-old Kirkland man was also involved in a previous collision in 2010 in which he told Renton Police he had a
sleeping disorder and had to take medication to stay awake. He told police that due to his medical condition, his doctor had advised him he should not be driving because he is subject to losing consciousness, according to the police report. Based on that information, the Snohomish County Sheriff ’s Office recommended vehicular homicide charges on Tues-
day and referred the case to the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office. The Everett Police Department received a 911 call at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 17, 2012 reporting that a pickup truck struck a bicyclist in the 10600 block of Evergreen Way. The bicyclist, identified as 30-yearold Trenton M. Graham of Everett, died. Detectives said the driver was traveling southbound
and sheared a light pole. His vehicle continued onto private property where he damaged landscaping and a chain link fence, according to the police report. The report continues that the driver claimed he lost consciousness and regained consciousness following the collision due to his sleeping disorder. The driver of the pickup will not be identified until charges, if any, are made.

The conversation was light, except for one instance in which Johnson asked about the drug ketamine, apparently following up from a previous conversation, and then for her phone number. While Johnson admits he “broke the rules” in creating the page and interacting with Watkins, the single-documented conversation does not indicate a sexual nature. “I was trying to help and send uplifting positive messages to her like I do with others,” said Johnson while testifying. A former male student disclosed during testimony that Johnson was a huge factor in the student’s success of staying sober. Although Watkins denied doing drugs, Johnson was concerned since she allegedly had friends who did, and had recently lost a friend to a heroin overdose/ suicide in the beginning of that 2011 school year. Another instance, which supposedly prompted Watkins to go to the counselor, was an incident in the school cafeteria when Johnson allegedly asked her to feel his hands because they were cold and put his arm around her and inadvertently touched her breast. However, the witnesses’ variations of what happened extremely contrasted, with one even saying she didn’t remember Johnson present at all. During closing arguments, city prosecutor Blakely War-
International. “The hope is true, lasting freedom that addresses the whole person body, mind, and spirit.” “We have been excited to unveil our partnership with Rescue: Freedom for quite a while now,” said Brian McCormack, pastor at Reach. “We believe resurrection is all about hope being injected into lives that seem otherwise hopeless.” On Easter Sunday, Vallerand, who is part of the Reach community, will share the emotional stories of several young women who escaped the clutches of sex slavery and who now serve as mod-
ern day examples of hope and resurrection. “I believe it is essential to connect people to real life stories of hope and restoration,” said Vallerand. “It is easy to feel overwhelmed by all the injustice in the world and miss the profound beauty happening all around us. Sexual slavery is a nightmare beyond our wildest dreams, but we must also recognize the amazing stories of healing.” Reach has partnered with Rescue: Freedom International in the fight against sex slavery, and on Easter Sunday, will be donating $5
on behalf of every first-time guest who fills out an information card. There are an estimated 27 million people in slavery in the world today, more than any other time in history. Many of them are women and children who have been sold into sexual exploitation. “While the problem of slavery is immense, there is also great hope that comes as a result of communities like Reach joining together to pursue freedom for others,” said Vallerand. For more information about Reach, go to www. ReachChurch.cc.
binton said because Johnson went through training and knew he broke the rules by creating the Facebook page and giving side hugs, that he was above them. “He doesn’t have to follow the rules. He’s the basketball coach,” she said. “He didn’t think the rules applied to him because he knew what they were and disregarded them. What other rules did he disregard?” Warbinton brought up teacher Milo Dullum’s testimony that Johnson often socialized with the students and spent a lot of time with Watkins, as Johnson assisted Dullum with the science class. Her argument on why Watkins was inconsistent in her statements was because she wasn’t good with dates and times. “Page didn’t remember exactly how the conversation began, but she knows that he asked those specific questions because those are ingrained in her mind,” Warbinton said about the alleged sexual questions. Because Watkins demean-
or was usually outspoken and talkative - Warbinton said - her pensive and uncomfortable manner when she spoke to the counselor showed that she “just wanted it to stop.” But Bible’s closing argument painted a different picture of a coach trying to help a student with the problems in her life. “When you get to know your students day in and day out, you start to know their world,” Bible said. “When you’re put in a class with kids that are dealing with what’s in the margins and trying to make sure they graduate, and some are having remarkable struggles, you do what you can to help them.” Bible said he and Johnson agreed that the former coach broke the policy when he spoke to Watkins through Facebook but “there is a significant distance from a policy violation to a criminal law violation.” A witness said Johnson spent “70-80 percent” of
his time with Watkins but also said he spent the same amount of time with other male students, noting that Watkins would even follow Johnson. Throughout the time they did spend together, Bible recounts Dullum said that he never noticed any hair pulling or chair kicking - some of Watkins’ flirtatious claims - and that he was a mandatory reporter and would have gone straight to administration if it had occurred. Additionally, Bible stated a former student, who sat next to Watkins in the material science class, said Watkins lied and when she found out about the investigation, she tried to go to the school and law enforcement to tell them. “Even more interestingly, Page tried to explain away to [the student] why she wouldn’t have heard anything,” Bible said to the jury. “By explaining ‘Oh, it was all on Facebook.’ That was the impression she was left with.
“Now, you have the one Facebook post, you have the only one. There’s not a conversation about sexual positions or anything like that.” As Bible continued for nearly an hour, there was an emotionally-stricken silence as he spoke about the importance of having an adult care about the well-being of his students. Later, after the verdict was read, Bible explained Johnson’s father helped Bible through a difficult time when he was his basketball coach. “Sometimes when you don’t have these folks or people that are prepared to do that, then people sometimes end up in prison when
they could end up in college, or in the streets when they could end up lawyers,” said Bible, who has known Johnson since he was 14 years old. “He’s got a really big heart, just like his father, who was my basketball coach when I needed help the most.” Bible speculates all the parties involved let their emotions take over when the investigation was done because of the “climate of the time” in which the allegations were made. As far as why Watkins made such claims, he can only speculate, but he “hopes that at some point [Watkins] gets some of the help she needs.”
