Changing image for Mount Si Principal seeks to transform perceptions of school as lax and poor By Carol Ladwig

Ski slopes are the place for Valley teen’s glory Page 12

There are two different versions of Mount Si High School in the Valley. There’s the “phenomenal school” that Mount Si Principal John Belcher describes, with steady growth and ever-improving student test scores. Then there’s the academically lax, racist ‘hick’ school that seems to persist in common memory. The latter Mount Si doesn’t really exist any more,

John Belcher Mount Si High School Principal

Belcher said at a March 27 meeting of the Mount Si High School PTSA. The purpose of his presentation there was to start putting an end to that image. “On all measures, Mount Si is really growing,” Belcher said. “We have the expectation of our student body that they can achieve at much, much higher levels.” See IMAGE, 18

Katie Remick of North Bend finds candy-filled treasures in the youngest age group’s circle, taking part in the Snoqualmie Valley Moose’s Easter hunt on Saturday, March 30, at the freshly mowed Little Si Links layout at Mount Si Golf Course. Hundreds of families gathered there, some walking a few hundred yards to Centennial Fields for the official Snoqualmie hunt an hour later. Several families complimented the Moose lodge’s layout, held at a new site this year. View more Valley Easter photos on page 3 or online at www.valleyrecord.com.

But this member of the Mount Si class of 2006, son of Jim and Karen McKiernan, worked hard and became the heart of his team in ways his ex-teammates still remember. A college graduate, James McKiernan with a promising job as a seed broker in Eastern Washington, the young McKiernan’s life ended in a tragic highway accident in 2011. Police told the high school staff that students should stay inside. Duvall Police Cmdr. Carey Hert told the Valley Record that police were doing a mental health check on a resident who was said to be armed. “For his safety, we had to go in and get him,” Hert said. “We didn’t want kids and buses going through the area,” in case of trouble. Officers, in about 15 police vehicles, responded from the Duvall-Carnation department and from Redmond, the King County Sheriff ’s Department and the SWAT team. In the event, the man cooperated with officers; Hert said two firearms were found in the home. At 2:05, police re-contacted the high school, saying most students could be released, except for students living in the area of 147th Court. Those students were to stay at school until they could contact their parents. At 2:35 p.m., teachers got word that the police had the situation at 147th Court under control. All students were to go home on their regular routes.

District goes for re-fi option, saves money The Snoqualmie Valley School District recently refinanced a portion of its outstanding bonds from 2005, to take advantage of more favorable municipal bond market conditions. Through the refinancing, the district secured more than $655,000 in debt-service savings over the life of the bonds, or about 16 percent. These savings allow for reduced tax levies. They are not available for district expenses. During the life of a school bond, often 20 years, a school district is allowed just one opportunity to refinance. Interest rates on the new bonds will average 1.73 percent, compared to 5 percent on the old bonds. “We are grateful to our community for passing bonds and levies that help keep our schools and programs strong and moving forward with improvements,” said Superintendent Joel Aune. “When the markets trend favorably, we look to take advantage of opportunities to save money for our taxpayers. With interest rates dipping to historic lows, this was the time to refinance our bonds to take advantage of those interest rates.” This refinancing effort, combined with refinancing of other bonds over the past few years, brings the net savings to taxpayers to approximately $3,980,000 on approximately $40 million of refunded bonds.

I hate to spend my time writing about something as trivial as grocery bags, but there are people who think that plastic bags are the greatest evil on earth—worse than abortion or marijuana!—and they want to ban plastic bags. It’s hard to stand and fight for plastic bags when they are so trivial. But they have value. I use them for our wastebaskets. I use them for litter in my car. Many people use them for kitty litter and doggie-do (every day). Plastic bags beat paper when it comes to damp groceries The Snoqualmie Valley Record welcomes letters (like produce, ice to the editor. Letters should be 250 words or cream, etc). This is America (at least for now). If the cloth/paper users want to promote their choices, they are welcomed to do so; and if they can convert more people, then the laws of supply and demand will naturally reduce the use of plastic. That’s how a free America would work. Studies show that cities that have banned plastic bags end up losing income and experiencing a rise in unemployment because people will shop in the adjacent unbanned communities. Shoplifting also increases when everyone brings in their own bags. Plastic bags are made in America and contribute to employment. If you agree that plastic bags should not be banned, trivial as they are, you better fight for them, just so you retain your right to choose.

Best of the Valley: A message from the heart Thank you, Valley Record and the Snoqualmie Valley for the privilege and honor to be chosen “Best of the Valley” for Photography. I wish to acknowledge the talent and uniqueness of Joy Baunsgard, “Photography by Joy,” and Brenda Huckle, “Genuine Image,” as longtime professional artists/ photographers whom I admire. I embrace the tremendous time, willingness to be flexible, love and determination it takes every day to be an active artist and businessperson. As professional photographers, we operate on artistic vision, developing style, as well as maintaining a level of respect, sensitivity, subtlety, direction, and customer service. On top of that, there is the capacity to be willing to grow in the art

itself, as it continues to evolve and expand. There are more images out in the world, every second of every day. We are all unique in our artistic vision and I celebrate my respectful artistic friends. It is my love for my community, my colleagues, my friends in local businesses throughout the Valley, as well as physical beauty of the Lower and Upper Valley, the people I have grown to know and admire immensely that compel me to cover as much of our area history and personal history as I possibly can. There is a preciousness that I can’t ignore, as an artist. We are blessed to live in a spectacular part of the world. As my thank-you to the people and lovers of the Snoqualmie Valley, I invite you to come be a part of this year’s, “Heart of the Valley-Fill the Heart” community image, to be held Sunday, May 19, at Snoqualmie’s Centennial Field from 2 to 5 p.m. Outlining the heart with people, with no lines on the field will begin promptly at 2 p.m. and we will fill it until 3 p.m. I will be up at the top of a ladder in a firetruck, approximately six stories high. You may bring as many cameras, cellphones, recording devices as you possibly want and help me celebrate how important we are to each other and how splendid our Valley is. Learning matters Education critique from Mount Si High students gets attention from C-SPAN By Carol Ladwig Staff Reporter

School is just a game, say students in a short film from Mount Si High School, and a simple one. It’s just about memorizing a few facts long enough to take a test, they say, and they’ll never use that information again. “The problem is students don’t learn to learn,” says Emmit Rudd, who created the film with Dean Sydnor. Rudd’s denunciation of modern education is echoed by students, teachers and administrators at Mount Si in “Education in America: The Reprehensible System.” It is also, as Rudd’s and Sydnor’s entry in the 2013 StudentCam video competition by C-SPAN, the most important issue they think President Obama will face in 2013. “In the long run, nothing else matters,” says Sydnor, in the movie. The film was awarded an honorable mention in the competition, plus a visit to Mount Si by the C-SPAN resource bus and network representative Jessica Lindquist. “We thought this (film) your fellow classmates did was incredible,” Lindquist told Joe Dockery’s video production class March 19. More than 1,800 films were entered in the annual competition, and 75 winners were selected to share in $50,000 in prizes. The parents of both boys, as well as school officials and Snoqualmie Mayor Matt Larson were in the classroom as well to congratulate the two and share their thoughts on the film, shown Carol Ladwig/Staff Photos after the presentation. The first, from Rudd’s father, Rob, was surprise at the title. “I thought, ‘whoa, the principal agreed to be in this?’” he said, laughing. He was not at all surprised by their choice or treatment of a complex subject, though, saying “I thought they did an excellent job in their message.” Sydnor’s father, Tom, agrees, saying the two are often watching coverage of education issues on the news. “They have really well-formulated opinions,” he said. “They study this stuff.” To view the Mount Si students’ film, visit http://studentcam. viddler.com/videos/watch.php?id=1aae5c76. One of the contest requirements was the inclusion of a relevant clip of C-SPAN footage, one of the resources highlighted in the C-SPAN bus parked outside the high school. Students

Still finding her niche, Pam Whittington is president of Mount Si Artist Guild, a gathering of local creativity. Below, some of her painting works.

Artist profile: Mount Si guild leader Pam Whittington celebrates all arts

Valley artist Pam Whittington fondly remembers when she began loving art. “When I was in high school, I painted a floral picture on a burlap sack using a pallet knife and acrylics. I gave it to my mother and she put it up on the dining room wall as a centerpiece. I was so proud. It was ‘70s avocado, green and blue, and my mother loved it.” From Albuquerque, New Mexico, Pam moved all over the country while her father was in the U.S. Navy. The Pacific Northwest was her favorite place to live so she settled in Snoqualmie with her husband, Tim, and their three children. She had taken classes in watercolor at the University of New Mexico and loved it. She

now creates ink and watercolor mixed media with skills she learned from local artists Eileen Erickson and Audrey Zedder. Pam is the president of the Mount Si Artist Guild and is excited about Art Walks and local shows. “I believe that we need to be inclusive of all types of art,” she said. “Painting is wonderful, but jewelry, photography and all the fine arts should be celebrated.” That is her goal via the arts. Pam calls herself a wannabe

artist because she’s still exploring to find her niche. The Mount Si Artist Guild is currently working on a book dedicated to Gloria Danielson, with photography to be done by Mary Miller. Alraune Chowdhury is directing the project, which will feature the artists of MSAG and their works. Look for it in August. Learn more about MSAG at www.mtsiartistguild.org/msag, find them on FaceBook, or contact Whittington at pww2@centurytel.net.

Jack was a man who exemplified integrity, hard work, honor and commitment. He fiercely loved his Heavenly Father, family, the Bible, baseball, and woodworking. He touched many lives not always by what he said, but what he did even when he was not aware anyone was watching. He retired after 37 years at the Boeing Company spending the rest of his years being there for his family and completing fine woodworking projects as he was able. He is survived by his wife Dana of 54 years, four children, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be missed but left a legacy of example of his core values which will never go away. One of Jack’s favorite Winston Churchill quotes: “To perceive a path and to point it out is one thing, but to blaze the trail and labor to construct the path is a harder task.” We are all diminished when a man of honor passes on. Night to remember

I

t was a memorable night for Reid Howland. Cheers echoed from the grandstands when the freshman defender scored his first varsity goal, one of a string of scores in a lopsided Mount Si win last Friday, March 29, at home with the Lake Washington Kangaroos. It was a total team effort, as Howland explains it. He and junior Alex Dolewski were trading passes, and as they neared the Kangaroo box, Howland took his shot. The players, fans and coaches all played a part in this moment. “It’s definitely something to keep in my mind,” he said. Mount Si’s 6-1 win was one of the rare easy moments. It was a chance for younger players to take the field. “Ever y b o dy gets out there. E v e r y b o d y ’s happy,” said head coach Darren Brown. girl from Bonney Lake, Wash., in our own car, traveling from race to race by ourselves. I have learned to be independent and manage my own career. On top of all this traveling and a grueling race schedule, I have to graduate by June 7th! Luckily I have online classes, but it is such a different experience from my high school peers who go to school day in and day out. I am not sure how many days of school I have been to this year, but I know I have missed more days of school than I have gone to!

Valley’s Anna Mounsey racking up titles, soaring down mountains Snoqualmie 17-year-old Anna Mounsey is among the top skiers of her age group in the nation. Mounsey took her fourth national championship title by winning the Super G, Downhill and Overall titles at the 2013 Marriot U18 National Championships in Mammoth, Calif. Along with the 2012 Slalom title, Anna becomes one of the most decorated U18 (16and 17-year-old) champions of all time. Anna competes with Team Alpental Snoqualmie. “Anna is an all around skier, champion and ambassador for the quality of our local team. Her skills were sharpened on Alpental’s world class terrain and it is satisfying to see her execute her skills on the national level,” says Evan Weiss, director of Team Alpental Snoqualmie. “I am proud of myself for how I skied and how calm I kept myself after the downhill to secure the Super-G win,” said Mounsey. “I am grateful for the support and love I am feeling from everyone. This is all so unreal, and I’m really trying to just soak it all in.” Mounsey took a moment to answer a few questions about her progress this week:

What’s your training regimen like?

Anna Mounsey, competing at junior nationals. She won three gold medals at the event. you listen to the timer count down from 30 seconds until you are allowed to go—when it starts counting down from 5 to 0. During the 30-second countdown, I am mostly nervous and thinking about what to do when I get on course. On the course you just think about executing your plan from inspection, and going faster. Its more of being in the zone. Sometimes it can be terrifying when you go off jumps or get into a sketchy section, but that passes by pretty quickly.

Do you think you are peaking now? What has skiing done for you? At races this year, I am right with the pace of the U.S. “D” team girls, and actually qualified to go to the try-out camp this May and try out for the United States Ski Team to be on the “D” team. I don’t think I am peaking now. I have had good results but in the skiing world, I am still extremely young and underdeveloped.

What goes through your head in a race? At the start of a race, you stand in the start gate where

This sport has definitely defined me. You don’t just learn how to ski around gates in this sport ... it’s so much more. So far in my life, I have been all around the U.S. and Canada; I have been to Europe twice now and Chile once. In ski racing you grow up very quickly. Sometimes there can be 12 kids to one coach and you need to take care of yourself because usually the coaches are only there to drive you to the hill and register you. Currently, I am in California and I have been here since March 3 and won’t return until April 17. I am down here with one other

Usually when you race on the circuit that I’m on you don’t get that much training in the winter. I do most of my training in the summer at Mount Hood, and then have a fall camp in Chile. Then I head to Copper Mountain, Colo., for a month or so of training in November. By the start of December or late November, I start racing full time and don’t stop until the middle of April. By the time I am done racing after a long season, I will have done around 60 races. The peak of the season is March, which is known as the “championship season” or “March madness.” This is a time period where you go from race to race, and it is exhausting. I had a great series at U18 Nationals and now I am just trying to make it to the end of the season.

What’s ahead for you, long-term? Ahead of me, I have graduation. But since I qualified to try out for the U.S. Ski Team in May, I will see what happens. If I am named to the national team, I plan to commit to college and take a gap year to follow my dreams and see how far my talent and hard work can take me. Long term, I want to see myself traveling the world and ski racing on the World Cup. If that doesn’t work out, then winning an NCAA title would be pretty awesome, too, along with getting an education to fall back on. I haven’t committed to a college yet, but I have the University of Alaska, Montana State and the University of New Mexico in mind.

Do you still wear a good luck charm? No, I think I lost that on the river! Right now, I just have a good warm-up and mental routine that help me perform at my best every day. • You can learn more about Anna Mounsey’s team, Team Alpental Snoqualmie at www. tasskiracing.org.

In honor of our dear friend James Michael McKiernan’s birthday, Huxdotter Coffee will be donating all of our tips/donations to the Jimmy Mac Memorial Scholarship Fund set up in James’ memory at Mount Si High School. Over the last six years, the “Be the Change” leadership conference has evolved into a place for local teens to be inspired about making a difference. Youth voice and leadership are important. The conference is about hearing those voices and expanding that leadership. Trained youth facilitators will also be there, presenting on such topics as: “Media and You”; “You and Your Brain”; managing stress and dealing with depression; healthy relationships, substance abuse, financial responsibility, suicide prevention and information about police responses and careers in law enforcement. Participants will also have opportunities to meet with other youth, and a free lunch will be served. Learn more at snoqualmievalleycommunitynetwork.org.

• “Students have to take AP classes to avoid the students who just don’t care.” • “Freshmen are being scared away from taking the challenging classes.” • “The kids that aren’t in the advanced classes, that aren’t in the remedial classes, they’re kind of left there, in the middle… they’re not as valued.” • “Students don’t feel trusted.” • “There’s no money here and we can’t pass a bond.” • “I’m hearing a lot about marijuana in the school.” • “Teachers don’t effectively engage students.” • “We’re known as a ski town, and a farm community, and we have some big boys who can play football.” Belcher then asked parents what evidence of change they would need to see for these perceptions. He specifically commented on evidence that already refutes the rumors of poor academics and drug use, including the results of the latest Healthy Youth Survey. However, he said, people aren’t talking about this data. Evidence that parents suggested included: outreach to the entire community, not just the school staff and parents who already visit the school’s Web page; presenting more of the school’s and students’ accomplishments, such as the upcoming art show April 18 to the public, including hosting school events in other public venues; a comparison of Mount Si High School’s course offerings, class sizes and infrastructure with other area high schools’; and more information about the numbers of students going on to four-year schools, graduation rates, and so on. A follow-up discussion is set for 6:30 p.m. May 13, as part of the PTSA meeting. The discussion will be the last portion of the meeting, following the regular PTSA business, and a presentation of the Healthy Youth Survey results.

‘Secret Garden’ classic comes to life Snoqualmie student Ariana Chriest (pictured at right) and Makenna Griffin are part of CORE Theatrics’ upcoming production of “Secret Garden.” When asked why she does theater, Ariana replied, “Theatre is the medium through which I experience my life and it is the first love of my life. There is no better way to connect to people and learn about human nature than to investigate and experience it through the lives of other people. It is the single-most rewarding thing I do, both to myself and to my community.” In “Secret Garden,” the enchanting classic of children’s literature is re-imagined in brilliant musical style. Orphaned in India, 11 year-old Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald and his invalid son Colin. “Secret Garden” is a PG show recommended for ages 8 and up. Show dates and times are April 19, 20, 26, 27 and 28—7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $16, $14 for students; visit www.coretheatrics.com/upcomingshows.htm. Performances are at the Lake Washington High School Performing Arts Center, 12033 N.E. 80th St., Kirkland.
