1,600 iPads for MISD students next year By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
For some Mercer Island students, this spring just got a lot more high tech. By the fall, all students in eighth grade through high school will have an iPad, courtesy of the Mercer Island School District. The new program, called 1:1 iPad Program, debuts this spring and will be in full effect by the beginning of the next school year. The district has been working toward this point for the last two years, after running a pilot program with students that found the devices help students and teachers. Each iPad comes with a list of available applications, already paid for by the district. Students can pick and choose

Sixty-five Metro Transit bus routes are at risk of being canceled, and service reduced on another 86 routes, if state lawmakers allow temporary two-year funding for the agency to expire without authorizing a permanent and sustainable source of revenue. Mercer Island bus routes including the 201, 203, 205EX, 211EX, 213 and 216 are on the list of routes to be eliminated, while the 204 could be reduced or revised. That message – showing cuts to up to 17 percent of Metro’s service that will cascade through the agency’s 217-route system – were included in Metro’s 2012 Service Guidelines Report, sent Monday to

OPINION
Mercer Island rEporter | www.mi-reporter.com
The toll factor I
slanders worry that tolling will bring down property values. The belief is that having to pay each time you go off-Island will make living on the Island less attractive. While it is too early to tell what the longterm effect on Island property values will be, it might be instructive to see how property values have faired in other communities affected by tolling. The only such communities even close to Mercer Island would be Hunts Point and Medina. Presumably, their home values would have fallen after tolling was put in place on SR-520 in December, 2011. No, they are not like Islanders in that they can reach key services by simply heading into downtown Bellevue, or by ‘going around’ the lake to get to Seattle. But, we would argue that for many west Bellevue residents, a trip around the lake would hardly be a viable or practical option. What has happened to home values there? Property values in those communities have remained stable and have even increased. A year after tolling began, assessed property values in the Medina and Hunts Point communities remained flat in 2012, then increased slightly for 2013. Why is that — a fluke, a statistical error? Home buyers there don’t care about tolls because they are so rich? Hmmm, we have heard that before. Here on Mercer Island — as SR-520 commuters avoiding SR-520 tolls flooded onto I-90, the Park and Ride and buses, property values fell by 4.4 percent last year. Yet some of that loss has been made up when assessed property values for 2013 increased by 1.4 percent. It is folly to assign a change to a single variable. And the possibility of tolling I-90 (authorized by the Legislature in 2009) was not well known until recently. There are many possible factors affecting property values here. Time is an important factor. Yet when asked about the impact of tolling on home values here, Lloyd Hara, the current King County assessor, was a bit puzzled to learn there was a concern. He was not convinced there would be any long-term effect. “A bump, maybe,” he said. “Only time will tell if potential tolling of I-90 would have an impact, if any, on property values on Mercer Island,” he said. “It would be up to prospective homeowners to make that cost-and-benefit analysis in the real estate market.”

To the editor How is Rep. Clibborn on Islanders’ side? The first sentence of the interview this week (Reporter issue of March 27) with Rep. Judy Clibborn says she wants us Islanders to know that she is on our side. Yet the last sentence says, “We can prolong or delay it,” she said of tolling, “but we cannot stop it.” Nowhere between those sentences are any assurances from Rep. Clibborn that she intends to do anything to keep Mercer Islanders from ending up paying an inherently unfair toll. What is clearly happening here is that Rep. Clibborn, being the astute politician that she is, all of a sense. They are NEW TAXES. great interest when I read your interview of Rep. Judy Clibborn and her role in the I-90 tolling debacle. Her comment that “My job is to provide funding for transportation statewide” when asked why she didn’t include funding for Highway 520 in her latest $10 billion dollar transportation proposal was stunning. Ms. Clibborn has forgotten the fact that she was elected to represent the 41st District. Her role is to advocate for her constituents, not so that she can play the role of a kingmaker in Olympia. It is clear that Ms. Clibborn would rather have a seat at the table of power than effectively represent her district, which is totally opposed to tolling I-90. All politics are indeed local and it is long past time we found someone who will represent us in Olympia. It is time to recall Judy Clibborn now and find someone willing to stand up and fight for Mercer Island at this critical juncture. No tolling on I-90! Jeff Madera

Bill Bell, Parkinson’s advocate honored By Reporter Staff
Mercer Island resident Bill Bell is a recipient of the highest honor bestowed by the Whitman College Alumni Association for his outstanding work to improve the quality of life for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease in the Seattle area. An advocate for Parkinson’s Bill Bell patients and their families since his mother’s early diagnosis, Bell cofounded the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation in 1998. In 2000, the foundation received a $200,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bell currently serves on the board of directors for both the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation and the Davis Finnery Foundation, which promotes Parkinson’s research. “The process learned through the Whitman experience gives one the tools to attack and solve problems from many angles,” he said. “If you tackle the problem with the confidence of your convictions, you’ll find the solution. It then becomes a game of when, rather than if, the solution will come.” When the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation first opened the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center with Evergreen Hospital, it was one of only two care centers specializing in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in the nation. “Over the years, we’ve met some of the most courageous and inspiring people who happen to face a chronic, degenerative disease,” Bell said. “My mother, Tina, the inspiration for this effort, was certainly one of them. I feel myself lucky to have become a friend, champion and advocate to those touched by Parkinson’s.” Learn more about the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation at www.nwpf. org.

Island man accused of raping teen Felon charged with rape, sexual exploitation of teenage girl
In early March, Seattle Police Department officers met with the victim at Denny Juvenile Detention Center in Everett to record an interview. During the interview she told officers she was involved with prostitution and she had a female pimp who posted ads on Backpage.com. After the victim would go on “dates” — usually located at two hotels in the Seatac area — she would hand over the money to her pimp. But occasionally the girl went to Kirkland. She told officers in the interview that the first time she saw Lind, she told him her age. He replied, “That’s OK, I like them young,” the girl said. The victim showed an officer the location where she met Lind, 303 6th Avenue, and described what he looked like. After following up on the details, the victim positively identified Lind and officers obtained a search warrant. On March 19, the Seattle Vice

A 49-year-old Mercer Island man was charged with rape and sexual exploitation of a child in mid-March after allegedly paying a 15-year-old girl to have sex with him at a Kirkland condo. Jordan Church Lind remains at the King County Jail after his bail was set at $200,000 on March 22 in King County Superior Court. According to probable cause documents, Lind allegedly met with a 15-year-old girl at his Norkirk neighborhood condo, where he lived at the time, and had the girl perform sex acts on him four of the five times she met with him between January and February of this year. Each time, he allegedly paid her $100 to $200 for each visit.
Unit arrested Lind, who had a 20-year-old woman present. The woman has a history of prostitution arrests and had current ads on Backpage.com, but she denied being there for such reasons. During Lind’s transportation to the police station, the documents state that he said all he does is “pick up prostitutes and has consensual sex” and that he always “checks their ID cards to confirm their age.” “He then stated that his life is over, that he has terrible luck,” according to the documents. “Lind then stated since he knows the degree of the charges against him, he feels he shouldn’t talk anymore.” Lind has several prior felony convictions, including unlawful imprisonment, attempting to elude a police vehicle and possession of stolen property. His arraignment is set for April 3. The Kirkland Reporter is a sister publication of the Mercer Island Reporter.

The Nature Conservancy – Connecting Our Future with Our Past One of the unfortunate by-products of industrialization and population growth is the degradation or loss of natural ecosystems that have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years. Many of these natural communities provide unmatchable characteristics that support sustenance to unique or vital species of plants and animals. While the march of progress will always continue, most people feel it is important to balance that progress with efforts to preserve the natural heritage of our great land. That is the work to which The Nature Conservancy has dedicated its mission, and it is why QFC is proud to feature The Nature Conservancy as our charity of the month for April. The work of The Nature Conservancy is wide-ranging and extensive as it seeks to preserve pristine natural areas that have not been adversely impacted by civilization, rebuild and restore areas that have suffered negative impacts and develop solid, science-based solutions to address current problems.
The Conservancy is working on many fronts to preserve and restore wild animal populations throughout Washington State. As an example, the Conservancy has been working in the Skagit River region since the mid-1970s to enhance both the bird and fish populations in the area while also supporting the farmers who make their livings here. The project has helped preserve more than 9,000 acres of bald eagle habitat as well as 10 miles of river and thousands of acres of forest. The Conservancy has worked for years to protect the Skagit and its ecosystem. This is the only river in Washington which supports all five native species of Pacific salmon. Because salmon are abundant, a renewed population of hundreds of bald eagles gathers along the banks each winter to feed on them. The river’s floodplains, tributaries, side channels and sloughs also support large populations of migratory shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors. Other examples of the Conservancy’s important work here in Washington abound.

While admittedly we are one of the many families that moved from Seattle to Mercer Island for the excellent schools, I had no idea how far the definition of excellent schools extended. I’ve been so impressed by my kids’ teachers and administrators from the start, but over the past couple of years I’m also so appreciative of Todd Kelsay, the MISD transportation director. Beginning in January, on Friday mornings before school, we have had 70-80 elementary school students running in preparation for the MI 5K but also just to get kids’ brains cells firing before school (thanks to all of the studies highlighting how important exercise is for brains). Todd has been so supportive by helping coordinate buses for these runners to get to their respective schools on time, and if it weren’t for him and his super friendly drivers, there’s no way we’d be able to offer this program to non-Lakeridge students.
So a huge congratulations to all the kids that ran this past weekend, but also a huge thank you to Todd Kelsay and our school district for supporting them. I only wish other school districts were as fortunate as we are! Susan Empey

iPads | FROM 1 iPads on April 11-12, after spring break, while the freshmen and eighthgraders will get theirs in August. The district is planning ongoing professional development with teachers at both Islander Middle School and MIHS to help them not only learn the most effective ways to use the devices, but also to offer support. Parents who already have iPads for their child’s use at home can opt out of the program, but they have to be willing to pay for the apps that are available on the district devices. The district said in its ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ about the program that one of the program’s goals is to provide a consistent digital platform for both students and teachers.
Some of the 78 apps that will be available include: 3D Brain, which models the human brain; Constitution for iPad, an app that is like flashcards to help with studying; Daily Grammar, which helps with grammar lessons; KCLS, which allows access to the King County Library System; and Nature Human Genome, which looks at genetics. Each device also includes a management tool that will allow the district to track the location of the iPad, monitor the amount of free and used memory, push messages and transmit documents and keep a record of how long since the device has reported to the management system, which will be used if the device is ever lost or stolen. The management system will not be able to read data about apps or usage, control the camera or see
data stored on the device. Wright said the Shoreline School District has a similar program, which started with laptops but is slowly converting to using iPads. She said Shoreline has had a 1:1 laptop program for all students in 7-12 grades for around the last five years, but last year moved a high school to using iPads and another this year. “They are the closest in both volume and size to us,” said Wright. “It’s a wonderful program.”

President Obama’s sister to visit Island to attend Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship award ceremony Mercer Island High School student, Hannah Winkelman, interviewed Maya SoetoroNg, President Obama’s halfsister, about her mother and about her upcoming visit to Mercer Island for the Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Awards Ceremony on April 20. By Hannah Winkelman Special to the Reporter
Mercer Island High School may have had a hand in shaping our 44th president; after all, Barack Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, graduated from MIHS in 1960. A prominent intellectual, Dunham enjoyed talking about new ideas, current events, and reading books from the Mercer Island library as a high school student. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in anthropology and worked with women in developing countries around the world, giving them the courage to be independent and the tools to start their own businesses. It all started in a Seattle suburb known as Mercer Island, in an even smaller neighborhood known as the Shorewood Apartments. “[Mercer Island] helped

From the fall quarter of 1961 through the spring quarter of 1962, Dunham, now “Anna Obama,” attended the University of Washington, while she and her baby boy, Barack, lived in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Later, when she returned to Honolulu, she found out that Barack Sr. was still married to his previous wife. She divorced him and finished her studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. There, she married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian graduate student. The new family moved to Indonesia, and in 1970, Dunham’s second child was born. That child is Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in Honolulu with her husband and two children and is a professor of education at the University of Hawaii. As an anthropologist, Dunham worked all over the world, reaching out to women lacking resources but still holding their communities together. Fearless,

Schools who are invited to participate are encouraged to participate in at least one local charity and a global one. “The global part is the one we’re still thinking on,” said Stone. “We’re thinking about how to expand.” The event itself was like going to a star-studded music festival, but just for kids. Here is what some of the students who attended the event said afterward: “We Day was a super inspiring experience. I had a great time and realized that kids can make a difference. It was really cool to hear some people’s stories of doing the ‘impossible.’ All of the speakers really connected with the audience. It was fun to see everyone’s YouthSpark bracelets glowing in the dark like the spark in us. I am so glad I got to go, and I hope everyone will take what they learned and use it for the better,” said seventhgrader Caroline Lambright. “I had an amazing time at We Day. I would really like to thank the teachers who gave us this incredible opportunity. I feel inspired to take action in our community and around the world. At first I didn’t know what I could do and if I could do something to help out. But now I feel motivated and eager to be the change and take action,” said

Islander Middle School students show their ‘We Day’ spirit in front of Key Arena on Wednesday, March 27. Louise Morton, a seventhgrader. “I thought that I had made at least somewhat of a difference before We Day, but now I think that I’m nowhere near what I could be doing,” wrote seventh-grader Kari Anderson. “Some of the kids out there have been doing these kind of things while giving up a lot. Time, money, and things are all spent, but when you think about it, it’s worth it. First world problems aren’t real problems, and, if we work hard, we can make that true for Third World problems. Maybe we will, someday. I know that I can do much, much more than what I’ve been doing. And I think that if I can, the rest of the world can. Together, we can change the world.” “I think We Day was very inspirational for young kids like us. It taught us that we can make a difference as kids locally and globally, regardless of the issue. I think the
speakers were very inspiring and so were the founders themselves ... The youthspark bands were pretty cool just like a lot of things at this event. This is something I remember for the rest of my life,” said Patrick Hanson, seventh grade. “Today was so inspirational for me to see all of their stories and how they overcame. It showed me that I can get over any hump or setback that is thrown at me,” wrote sixth-grader Stirling Yeason. “We Day was a real life changer. I learned that the world will change, but it starts with us. I’m already reading ‘Free The Children,’ it is really good,” said sixth-grader Nia Tate. “I also connected to the speakers, I hope I can learn more from this. In the future I’m planning on helping as much as I can with ‘We Will Not Rest’ in helping the homeless.” “I think that We Day was really inspirational, and I loved listening to all of the speakers talk. I liked how they really included the audi-
ence, and how they taught us the dance. Today was so fun, and I would absolutely love to do it again!” said Cara Starnes, sixth-grade. “We Day was an amazing day, and it was nice to be there with a mix of kids that we don’t normally see on a daily basis and still have fun. The energy in the arena was amazing, and it felt like we were all mentally together,” wrote eighth-grader Kristin Jradi. “The speakers were so passionate about how we can change the world; it was very inspirational. At times we have all asked how we could make a difference since we are only one person, and yesterday taught us that we can. I also loved hearing the stories of what our community has done to make a difference. The amazing performances and the powerful speakers really empowered me to talk about We Day and learn about some of the other campaigns that Free The Children is involved with. I

Tooth fairy prices go up, down based on economy By Reporter Staff
Like most of the major U.S. stock indexes, the going rate for lost baby teeth posted double-digit gains in 2012, according to Delta Dental’s The Original Tooth Fairy Poll®. The average gift from the tooth fairy climbed to $2.42 last year, up from $2.10 in 2011, a 15.2 percent gain. The Original Tooth Fairy Poll® has generally been a good barometer of the market’s overall direction. In fact, the trend in tooth fairy giving has tracked with the movement of the Standard & Poor’s 500 index (S&P 500) in nine of the past 10 years. In 2012, the S&P 500 gained 13.4 percent, similar to the tooth fairy gift’s 15.2 percent gain. “As the leaders of the dental benefits industry, we look at all kinds of economic indicators,” said Bill Hupp, a spokesperson for Delta Dental Plans Association.
“I’m happy to say that the tooth fairy delivered encouraging news about the country’s economic recovery in 2012.” The first tooth has a higher valuation. Other interesting findings from poll, which surveyed more than 1,200 parents nationwide, include: • The tooth fairy visited nearly 90 percent of U.S. homes with children who lost a tooth. • The tooth fairy left cash for kids in 98 percent of the homes she visited. Two percent of children received toys, candy, gum or other gifts. • Twenty-two percent of kids hit it rich and received $5 for each lost tooth. For more information, visit www.theoriginaltoothfairypoll.com. To get a sense of the taste and style choices of the tooth fairy, parents can follow her on Pinterest at www.pinterest.com/origtoothfairy.

WE Day | FROM 12 will definitely be participating in the ‘we are silent day,’ teaching the ‘we day’ dance, and spreading the word. I am so thankful for being able to attend this event.” “We Day made me think that people have the desire for change, and the hope that the world can be a better place. We Day is the call that brings a generation together. Most of all, We Day is more than just one day of celebration and inspiration, it is every day. Free The Children’s We Day is youth leading and spreading local and global change. One step at a time, we will change the world,” said sixth-grader Faith Osei-Tutu.
“I had the best time at We Day — it was incredibly inspirational and exciting and fun all at the same time. I feel so motivated to start helping out even more,” said seventh-grader Sophie Feldman. “I heard the wonder and inspiration in Magic Johnson’s voice. He explained to us that anything is possible, we can do things for our community that is so little yet goes so far and that we are the next great generation,” said sixth-grader Bridget Aylen. “This was literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I participated in. This absolutely changed the way I think now. This experience was amazing, so amazing I cannot even explain. We Day, we inspire the change.”

Mercer Island girls lacrosse fits pieces together on field By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
Teams are like puzzles, and getting all of the pieces to fit on and off the field makes a good team. The Mercer Island girls lacrosse team is working to get to the finished product in the early season. The Islanders are 2-2-0 so far this season, splitting games last week. “The team has been doing well this season so far in practice, and some games, we have been working on putting it all together, working as a team and working to do this more consistently,” said head coach Liz Shields. On Monday, March 25, the team beat Overlake by just one point. The final score was 17-16 for the Islanders. Mercer Island was up 9-7 at the end of the first half, but Overlake outscored the team 9-8 in the second to

The Mercer Island girls tennis team is off to a solid start this spring. The team has beaten some top-notch teams and is doing well against conference competition. “It’s going well,” said head coach Mindy Blakeslee. “We beat defending 4A champs Kamiak earlier, and we have Bellarmine coming up.” The team hosted Sammamish on Tuesday, March 26, winning with a perfect score of 7-0.

Lacrosse | FROM 16 posted four goals and one ground ball, while goalie Andrea Hatsukami made nine saves in the game. On Wednesday, March 27, the team traveled to play Lakeside. The final score was 12-8 for the Lions. The game was close at halftime, with Lakeside leading 8-7 over Mercer Island, and though the Islanders only gave up four goals in the second half, the team only scored one, which allowed Lakeside the win. Mercer Island’s Dulce Moll had three goals in the game
with one assist, while Saffron Snethen posted three goals. Tyler Sherper added two goals and an assist while goalie Andrea Hatsukami made seven saves for the team. While the team has had some early success, there is still work to be done, according to Shields. “We tend to rush in offense and don’t run the systems that we have been practicing, so again they need to work together and support each other,” said Shields. Mercer Island will take a break from games for spring break next week, but will return to action on Tuesday, April 9, to play Kennedy at 4 p.m. at Sunset Park.

MIHS boys soccer to honor former coach April 9 The Mercer Island High School boys soccer team will pay tribute to their former coach Steve Newman, at the team’s April 9 home game. Newman, who coached the team for over 15 years, died last October. In honor of his legacy, the team is wearing his initials on their jersey’s this season, but also wanted to do more to honor the coach. On Tuesday, April 9, the team will be hosting Bellevue, a longstanding rival, in a 7:30 p.m. game. Members of the Newman family will be on hand and the team plans to honor them, and remembrances of the coach will be shared at halftime.

Egg hunts packed on a sunny Saturday By Reporter Staff
The annual egg hunts in Mercerdale Park were a solid success on a very sunny Saturday afternoon last weekend. Several hundred children
and their parents attended the Lil’ Ones Egg Hunt in the late afternoon. Despite an impromptu start when children mistook instructions for the actual start, the eggs were quickly snatched
up, and almost as fast as it began, it was over. Later in the evening, older kids gathered at the park for the annual Flashlight Egg Hunt, searching for eggs in the long grass in the dark.
