leven Kirkland residents were registered for the Boston Marathon, which was the location of two bomb explosions Monday afternoon, according to the Boston Athletic Association that hosts the marathon. Two bombs exploded near the finish line, leaving at least three people dead and nearly 200 others injured, according to news reports. President Barack Obama addressed the nation Monday and vowed justice would be served to whomever was responsible for the two bombs.

More than 520 Washington residents were registered for the race, according to the Boston Athletic Association. That included the following Kirkland residents: Jordan Anderson, 29; Dan Friesen, 50; Jens J. Hansen, 43; Tracy Jefferson, 41; Nisa E. Kennedy, 41; Bob Routt, 60; Cynthia Santana, 42; Rob Sundine, 34; Donald J. Tremblay, 52; Donald M. Uchiyama, 51; and Larissa M. Uchiyama, 48. Go Daddy to expand in Kirkland or Bellevue BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@kirklandreporter.com

The world’s largest provider of web hosting and domain names, Go Daddy, has hopes of expanding their company to the Northwest. But first executives need to pick a central location: Kirkland or Bellevue. While the company has several Kirkland connections - CEO Blake Irving was a former Kirkland resident, International Senior Vice President James Carroll was former neighbors with Councilwoman Amy Walen, and a handful of Go Daddy employees work at its new temporary location at Carillon Point - the company, which serves more than 11 million customers, still has some negotiating to do. Part of those negotiations occurred at the Woodmark Hotel on Tuesday afternoon, when Go Daddy executives met with Mayor Joan

McBride and Councilwoman Amy Walen. The council members told company officials that they hope Go Daddy chooses Kirkland for their newest Northwest location. “We have talented citizens, grade schools, a great quality of life, commitment to parks and open space and what we think is a friendly business environment, but still a very reasonable and environmentally friendly environment,” said Walen. “This is exactly the kind of business we want.” Carroll described the Eastside as a “hotbed for talent. This is really where people want to live and it’s where people will live and raise families.” While Carroll couldn’t disclose how many new employees the company is seeking to hire, he said the presence of big tech-companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and eBay, assures him of the [ more DADDY page 3 ]

Many 12-year-old boys do not have their careers picked out, and are less likely to have started on a business plan. But Kristopher DiGiulio - cook, caterer and cookbook author - at 12 years old, acknowledges he is just beginning. With hopes to eventually

open his own restaurant, Kristopher and his grandparents were recently at the Washington Federal Bank signing copies of his 30-page cookbook, “Kristopher’s Cook Book” for patrons. From the $10 price, $2 are slated to go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Royal Arch Children’s Heart Foundation. Kristopher’s sold about 40 so far.

In addition to selling his cookbook, Kristopher is the cook of “Kristopher’s Mini Catering,” and does business at local Masonry luncheons. With a family from Abruzzi and the city of Pescara in Italy, Kristopher’s cookbook is primarily comprised of traditional Italian dishes such as homemade ravioli, pasta, lasagna and pizza. But look further, and chili reci-

pes are sprinkled throughout the 20-plus entrees. When asked if he wants to become a professional Italian cook when he grows up, Kristopher casually responds: “It depends on what I feel like cooking.” Aside from also being a baker, to which his grandmother taught him his skills, he is partial to his award[ more COOKBOOK page 2 ]

Drug awareness and prevention presentation for parents

Youth Eastside Services (YES) in partnership with Juanita High School is offering a free drug awareness and prevention presentation titled “Understanding Adolescent Substance Abuse.” The program will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 in the library at Juanita

High School. The presentation will cover substances commonly abused, signs and symptoms of drug use, risk factors, setting healthy boundaries, and more. “The best way to keep your child safe is to become an informed advocate,” said Tena Youngberg, CDP, NCAC, the program presenter and a YES substance abuse counselor who works with teens at Juanita High School two days a week as an intervention specialist. The class came about in part as a way to respond to parent wishes to be better informed about teen drug and alcohol use and current trends. These were expressed in a recent survey distributed by Juanita High PTSA. According to the recently released Healthy Youth Survey conducted in schools across the state, while alcohol use is down among teens, marijuana use has increased. In fact, more kids see dangers in alcohol use or second-hand smoke than marijuana. However, the marijuana today is much stronger — at least eight times stronger

than the “weed” of the sixties. In addition, counselors at YES report seeing more kids who are experimenting with heroin. Youngberg will be reviewing ways parents can tell if their child is using drugs and how to respond. “Alcohol and other drugs are more detrimental to an adolescent’s developing body than at any other time in their life,” explains Youngberg. “Substance use can seriously interrupt development of a healthy brain and lead to other significant problems,” she adds. Youngberg, a certified chemical dependency professional, has worked with kids providing clinical counseling and substance abuse treatment for over 20 years. YES is a leading nonprofit provider of youth substance abuse and mental health counseling services. They have a number of experts on the front lines working with youth and families in schools, teen centers and at locations in Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish and Kirkland. And the following year, he won first place. “Since that win, he’s been a serious chili cook-off competitor,” DiGiulio said. So serious, that the owner of the West Seattle Diner, who was also in the competition, asked if he could use Kristopher’s chili recipe, to which he obliged. It is now offered at the diner once a month. This year, he’s won “Best Tasting” and “Best Overall” in three competitions. he Kirkland City Council announced support of the Emergency Medical Service’s Medic One levy by unanimously voting Tuesday to place it on the November ballot. The vote came following a controversy over whether the city could become providers of Advanced Life Support paramedics. The city withheld support of a regionwide Emergency Medical Services levy to leverage the city’s chance to become an Advanced Life Support provider. A couple of weeks ago, the King County Regional Policy Committee’s approved an agreement that could put Kirkland on the path toward

becoming an Advanced Life Support paramedics provider, by allowing Kirkland to be included in an examination of how paramedic services are delivered around the region. “It will require a study,” said Kirkland City Councilman Dave Asher, who also serves on the EMS Advisory Task Force. “But at least, now, we’ll get a fair shake.” The Medic One levy needed support from cities with more than 50,000 in population, and Kirkland was one of the only cities withholding support because it was not happy with the initial Strategic Plan. “Our primary goal, which is no different than other participating agencies, is to ensure the health and safety our citizens by providing an efficient and cost effective

EMS services,” said Kirkland Council Member Penny Sweet, and chair of the city’s Public Safety Committee. “We serve a much larger population since the 2011 annexation and will always provide high-quality services that meet our communities’ priorities.” Currently, Redmond’s ALS paramedics work out of EvergreenHealth Medical Center and serve Kirklanders more than 70 percent of their time, according to Asher. “I’m pleased they were able to reach a resolution, for whatever compelled them,” said president Bryan Vadney of the Kirkland firefighter union local 2545. “Our goal was to save the Medic One levy.”

In addition to garnering Washington’s technological talent, Go Daddy plans to make the Eastside location a place to kick-off international products and services. “Looking at the history of companies like Microsoft in the region, they’re really one of the first companies to go international in a big way,” said Carroll. ‘Old railroad bed’ article response: I was a surveyor and a historic research land evidence specialist for more than 30 years. As a surveyor, I worked in most of the states of the Mississippi and on the west coast in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. In all my research, much of which were the results of suits, I have found that the railroad beds’ “right aways can be sold” but the actual beds take a passage of sale by Congress, which to the best of my knowledge has never happened. In Rhode Island and in Maine I worked on property where homeowners built additions that were on the abandoned beds. What the results were is that the land owner had to remove their structures and return the rail bed to satisfactory condition so the rail could reinstall track and resume operations.

Outrageous towing experience in downtown As a long time Kirkland resident and supporter of Kirkland downtown businesses, I was astounded at what happened on a recent Saturday night when dining

in downtown Kirkland. It was a rainy evening and I decided to park in the unused Third Floor Fish Café parking lot as I know the restaurant has been closed since 2009 and the valet parking lot has since been unused. The lot was empty with the exception of another car. After a pleasant meal at Milagro Grill, I returned to my car at 8 p.m. to find my car had been towed. It’s true there are signs posted in the lot that only authorize permitted parking. Those signs have been there for the three years the restaurant has been closed. The really outrageous part of this story is that it cost me $400 to recover my car from Mac Towing in Redmond. It appears the night security guard for the Fish Café building under renovation decided to have my car towed on a rainy Saturday night in an empty lot that no one had any intention of using. I’m not sure which shocked me more - the decision made by a night security guard to tow a car from an empty unused parking lot or the $400 in fees to recover the car. I’ve looked at Kirkland and King County websites to try to determine who sets or regulates towing charges and can’t find any reference beyond the fact the Seattle City Council addressed the

issue last year and set fees in the $150 range. I realize the City of Kirkland is not responsible for the judgment call made by the night security guard but I would like to understand the city’s management of towing fees and how $400 is appropriate.

Trail over rail The Ballard Terminal Railroad Company suit to halt rail removal in the Cross Kirkland Corridor is without merit. The company has not provided evidence that it has the financial ability to improve and maintain the rail bed. Nor has it a firm schedule to run an excursion train and provide freight service. The suit delays recreational use of the corridor, while awaiting the uncertainty of an excursion train and hauling dirt from Bellevue construction sites. And those uses would benefit others more than Kirkland residents. We need to focus more on comparing the beneficial uses of the Cross Kirkland Corridor. One only has to look at other former rail corridors, such as Burke-Gilman trail, to anticipate extensive use of the Cross Kirkland Corridor by Kirkland residents for walking, running, and cycling. Annually, hundreds

of thousands of hours of recreational use will far and away exceed a few thousand hours of users of the proposed tasting train passengers. Recreational use of the corridor will serve many more Kirkland residents and provide community benefits far in excess of the elusive rail benefits. If we value recreational use, the comparison is overwhelming. A trail is a clear choice. The existing rails cannot support commuter rail either. The rails need to come out so that the rail bed can be converted to recreational use in a timely and costeffective manner. We have already waited too long for this conversion.

Lake Street Place project concerns I have serious concerns regarding the proposed development between Lake Street and Main, Permit No. DRV13-00192, across Main from Merrill Gardens. The proposal is for all traffic to and from the new development to use Main street. My mother lives at Merrill Gardens and I go there several times a week and have ample opportunity to see the traffic concerns that already exist. I recently observed The Merrill Garden van at the curb loading seniors with

walkers and wheel chairs, the US Mail truck delivering to Merrill Garden, and three cars in line waiting to pick up or drop off seniors. Cars trying to enter Main from Kirkland Avenue blocked the cars trying to exit onto Kirkland Avenue. It was gridlock. When cars are parked on both sides of Main two cars cannot pass and it becomes one-way traffic. Add to the example above the frequent presence of Fire Department Aid cars, moving vans, delivery vans, and ambulances, and you get the visual picture of daily traffic on this one block of Main Street. Now add senior citizens with their walkers and canes trying to cross the street to go the library, the marina, the farmer’s market, etc. I strongly urge the City of Kirkland to reevaluate the proposed development. It is entirely unacceptable to knowingly create a traffic nightmare that put citizen safety at risk. This is an already very crowded street with exits from public parking areas onto Main plus the continuous traffic coming from Kirkland Avenue. Merrill Gardens has been applauded publicly for being a valued asset to the city of Kirkland. The city needs to assure that they are treated as such.

Woman charged with stalking Clay Aiken A Kirkland woman was charged with stalking singer Clay Aiken after she allegedly scaled his security fence and looked through his window at his North Carolina home on April 3. community and then climbed over the fence to Aiken’s home, the documents continue. Officials said she began looking through his windows when she was ordered to leave. She left the area after someone at the home told her that local law enforcement was notified, according to a Chatham County Sheriff ’s Office press release Thursday. Shortly after, deputies located Saylor near her vehicle and trespassed her from the property. She was later arrested after Aiken filed charges against her. He told police that Saylor had done something similar in the past. During

that incident, Saylor reportedly threw her phone over the fence and told police that Aiken had invited her onto his property when in actuality he hadn’t, according to court documents. The documents did not say when that incident occurred. The Kirkland woman was released under a $5,000 unsecured bond and she is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on April 24. Aiken, 34, was the runnerup on Fox TV’s “American Idol.” He was also the runner-up on the reality TV show Celebrity Apprentice, losing Donald Trump’s final vote to Arsenio Hall last May.

Registered sex offender charged with sexual assault, burglary BY RAECHEL DAWSON rdawson@kirklandreporter.com

A

29-year-old man was charged Monday for allegedly forcing his way into a woman’s Juanita apartment and sexually assaulting her. Troy Scott Timmerman is currently being held at the King County Jail on a $250,000 bail. He was charged with one count of indecent liberties and firstdegree burglary. The alleged sexual offense occurred at an apartment complex in the 10000 block of N.E. 138th Place in Juanita. Charging documents state Timmerman lived in the

woman’s apartment complex and had met with her last week. He approached the woman and attempted to make arrangements to go out with her. “[The woman] told him that she was not interested but [the man] was persistent and told her that he knew she was attracted to him, that he knew she wanted him and kept asking if he could come into her residence,” the documents state. The woman suggested they could walk their dogs together and made plans for a Sunday. However, the woman was awoken from a nap at around 3 p.m. April 10 when she

heard a knock at the door. She recognized Timmerman through the peep hole in her door and opened it about 10 inches, the documents continue. Timmerman wanted to know when they were going out. She reminded him Sunday but he asked why April 10 wasn’t an option. After replying she was tired, he continued to ask three times why April 10 wasn’t an option. As she told him he was crossing boundaries, she began to shut the door but he allegedly pushed the door open with his shoulder. Timmerman allegedly forced his way into her home and grabbed her tightly from behind in a “bear hug,” ac-

cording to the documents. The woman told him to “stop” and “get off,” even suggesting to go for a walk as a way to prevent the encounter from progressing, but he continued to inappropriately touch her, the documents continue. The woman moved his hand and bit him, and again, tried to get him out of the house by suggesting they go out for drinks. But, the documents say, he allegedly responded by saying “oh no, you’re not going to play this way.” The woman was able to loosen his grip by suggesting they go to the living room. She was able to break free and grab her phone and run

out of the back slider to her porch and start screaming for help. Documents state Timmerman followed her, repeatedly telling her to “stop,” and that he was going to attack her, but the woman was already dialing her phone to call her friend. Timmerman saw her and begged her not to call the police, and only left after the woman shut the back door and ordered him to leave. Officer Audra Weber with the Kirkland Police Department said after the sexual assault the woman was able to get out of the apartment and call 911. Timmerman allegedly fled but police were able to locate him walking on

the sidewalk of the apartment complex, less than 100 yards from the assault. The woman identified him and he was arrested around 8:30 p.m. that evening. After Timmerman was advised of his Miranda Rights, he still made statements to police that he was “not a rapist” and that he “can’t believe she called the cops.” According to charging documents, Timmerman was already a convicted felon for robbery in the second degree, and a level-one registered sex offender for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. ...healthy living was to encourage teens to play an active role in their own health and give schools the tools to help improve their nutrition and physical activity programs. Achieving this goal is more important than ever because according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25 percent of Washington youth are

overweight, putting them at high risk of diabetes, heart disease, cancer and asthma. “LifeWise really enjoyed launching this contest with Treeswing,” said Jeff Roe, LifeWise president and CEO. “Supporting our members in their choices to live healthier and more active lives is a big part of what we do at LifeWise,

so we were excited to work with local schools to raise awareness of healthy choices.” Jeremy Sacks, a senior at Lake Washington High School, submitted the winning video called “The Healthy Song” – featuring an original song, healthy snack cameos and a solo dance sequence.

Indie game designer Jason Behr’s new project: ‘Buddy & Me’ intact. Behr launched a KickStarter campaign for “Buddy & Me” on March 21, hoping to reach a $40,000 pledge by April 20. Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for creative startups, which has the potential to give indie projects like “Buddy & Me” a boost to reach their goal. For Sunbreak Games, it means being able to complete the basic gameplay and core features for its game on select iOS and Android devices. “My greatest ambition for Sunbreak is to be able to create interactive experiences that aren’t just discussed as ‘fun,’ but are remembered as unique, meaningful, positive influences on both gamers and the industry as a whole,” said Behr.

Jason Behr, a former Nintendo designer, created the game “Buddy & Me,” a single player game about a boy who goes on enchanted journeys with his magical friend “Buddy.” COURTESY OF SUNBREAK GAMES

fter spending numerous hours working in a studio, game designer Jason Behr escapes outdoors to enjoy the beautiful Pacific Northwest scenery. The confluence of ocean, mountains and forests are what inspire the former Nintendo designer on a daily basis. This passion in turn has led him to create the game “Buddy & Me.” Behr is the founder of Sunbreak Games, an independent studio in Kirkland with a mission to “create responsibly small-scale but high-quality, unique, accessible, and positive gameplay experiences.” This belief can be linked to Behr’s personal preferences in games. “Entertainment for entertainment’s sake is fine, but being able to take away from it a new perspective, insight, or otherwise constructive feelings and values, is even better,” said Behr. Sunbreak’s first project, “Buddy & Me,” is a single player game that falls under the “endless runner” genre. It is about a boy who goes on enchanted journeys with his magical friend “Buddy,” running, jumping and gliding through an enchanted forest. It is no surprise that the game’s magnificent environments are based on Behr’s firsthand experience with the Northwest’s scenery and wildlife. Behr knew this was a perfect choice for the studio, hoping to invoke nostalgic childhood adventures as well as emotional themes like companionship in prospective buyers. “While there were quite a few influences that formed ‘Buddy & Me,’ the most important was the realization that in other games of its type, players are usually stressed out and alone,” Behr explained. Adding a loyal friend for the main character not only solves that problem, but it also makes the gameplay more interesting. A lot of Behr’s core values in gaming can be attributed to his earlier days at Nintendo, where he learned the intricacies of game design. Working as a game designer for the big-name gaming company, Behr began to appreciate why classic Nintendo games were so appealing – “not by luck or magic, but by specific, deliberate choices

by thoughtful people.” With those aspirations in mind, Behr worked on award-winning combat games such as “HALO 4” and “Metroid Prime.” Even so, he has always been more interested in the exploration aspect of the projects, creating compelling visual stories from how we see things every day. “In life, the reward at the end of a long hike might be the powerful feeling to look back and enjoy the landscape from a different perspective and reflect on the journey. … In games it’s not different,” said Behr. Shifting focus to Sunbreak Games, Behr believes that solid entertainment can also have positive social impact. However, the biggest challenge as an indie developer is to find the funding necessary to keep the quality, innovation and creative identity of their games
