When two bombs exploded near the finish line at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, Sean Sundwall of Snoqualmie, the first of about a dozen local runners to finish the race, was back in his hotel room, thinking about his race time of 2:29:32 and getting ready for Sean Sundwall the trip home. Just over four hours into Boston’s Marathon Monday, the explosions killed three people and injured 170. Within 45 minutes of Sundwall’s finish, another four local racers crossed the line, Dave Latourette of North Bend and Paul Scott, Snoqualmie, a minute apart at 3:01:35 and 3:02:38, then Curtis Pitts of Carnation crossed the finish line at 3:15:02, and Sommer Reynolds of Snoqualmie finished two minutes later. Kris and Dick Kirby relax on the porch of the house that they recently restored to its original 1914 look. Dick lived in the house as a teenager, when it was known as “The Dog House.”

It was late in the day last September when Mark Wood answered the phone. The caller was a mother. Her son was unconscious, and she needed help. Wood, an emergency dispatcher, was the first, life-saving voice she heard. While emergency medical technicians rushed to the woman’s Eastside home, Wood, a dispatcher at North East King County Regional Public Safety Communications Agency, or NORCOM, calmly walked her through the steps of CPR. Home, again Snoqualmie transplants Dick and Kris Kirby add a new chapter to century-old Carnation home By Carol Ladwig Staff Reporter

Next year, Dick and Kris Kirby’s Carnation home will reach the century mark. To the uneducated eye, it doesn’t look like a 100-year-old house, but the truth is, the house now looks more than ever like it did when it was new.

The three-bedroom, one-and-a-halfstory Craftsman that Dick lived in as a teen and inherited a few years ago, was restored last fall to its original look. It was a six-month process that unveiled the original fir flooring from under three layers of linoleum and glue, swapped standard double-hung windows for the custom high-sash style from the year the house was built and replaced the box gutters with halfrounds, plus a concession on materials, metal instead of wood. DISPATCHER FROM 1 His instructions, working through the mother’s actions, helped save the son’s life. “She had the hard part— she had to actually do the CPR. She did a great job,” said Wood, a North Bend resident, just named one of three King County Emergency Medical Dispatchers of the Year at an

April 12 ceremony. “It wasn’t just me alone,” he quickly adds. “It’s a real team effort when we do these calls.” From the other dispatchers routing the emergency medical techs, to the trainers that prepared Wood for the call, to the people who created the entire response system, there are many unseen faces that go into a successful call. “Every one is different,” Wood says.

Calm demeanor

A 12-year North Bend resident, Wood has been a dispatcher since 2001. He applied for the job after being encouraged by his sister, and went through the 18 months of academy and training. For Wood, it’s a rewarding job. “You see things happening on the news—bad things happen, sometimes. It’s good to

feel like there’s times I can do something, rather than just hear about it. I can try to help people.” He’s been told that he has a calm demeanor. “When you get these calls, you realize… somebody’s life could be changed by the actions that they and you do together. It’s serious business. But it can be very rewarding, too.”

“They always say we’re the first responders to the scene, even though we don’t actually go there. We’re the ones trying to talk them through anything they need to do.” Acting quickly can save lives. Wood tries to get callers to perform CPR right away, themselves, instead of waiting for responders. “When someone collapses, that’s time that their body’s

not getting oxygen. Even though the fire department is very quick… they recommend getting CPR started as soon as possible.” So, he walks them through it, as he did last September. “Giving CPR over the phone, and providing that level of care, is commonplace for our dispatchers. It’s what we do every day,” said Sheryl Mullen, operations manager at NORCOM and one of Wood’s superiors. For Wood, every call is important. Every call makes a connection. “You get people who call— they really open themselves up. The few minutes you get to talk to them is a very personal thing,” Wood said. “With CPR, or calls like childbirth, you’re dealing with somebody’s life. Every one is extra special.” “You need to keep perspective on it. You need to stay calm. They’re relying on you to do that,” said Wood The most important thing to know in any emergency call is where you are, and Wood is a strong believer in knowing your address. Without an address, there could be a delay as responders find you in an emergency. The award hasn’t changed Wood, who says he’d have done this by himself. “The mother who called…. she really did what needed to be done. I’m just glad I was able to help her out.”

“We tried to do everything local,” Dick said, and was happy to find that they could find everything they needed within a few miles of their home, even the halfround gutters, which had to be custom ordered. ‘“Those were kind of a splurge,” he said, but also true to the design of the time. They had to be metal, because today’s wood didn’t have the fine, straight grain of the old-fashioned wooden gutters. They were thrilled with the craftsmanship offered by local contractors, like the small curve in the sheetrock between sloping wall and ceiling in what used to be Dick’s bedroom, too. The Kirbys added a few modern touches to the house they began restoring last April, with the help of King County historic preservation expert Julie Koler, and local contractors and suppliers. Running water was piped to the second story — the pipes are hidden in a false closet in the small office — the electrical system was updated, and a new furnace was installed in what used to be the mud room, but, aside from the kitchen, the couple didn’t want to make any changes to the floor plan. “I like historic restoration a lot,” said Kris, “so we left everything structurally the same. We wanted to keep it true to the original.” The kitchen might not have been changed to line up all the appliances under the window, either, except that the Kirbys, avid antiques collectors, had very specific plans for some of their large buttermilk-paint cabinets. For instance, Dick points out a light switch in the living room that had to be moved during the renovation, “because Kris knew that cabinet was going to go there.” Embarrassed, Kris laughs and says, “oops!” She explains that they had to store, sell or send many of the treasured antiques in their Snoqualmie house to good new homes, in

Sundwall thought most of the 27,000 runners had already finished the race when the explosions occurred. “It’s huge silver lining of sorts,” he said in a phone call from a plan, minutes before take-off Monday evening. “There could have been a lot more collateral damage, if it had been even half an hour earlier.” Immediately following the explosions, law enforcement agencies essentially locked the area down, and cancelled flights into and out of the city. “All we were told officially was to stay in our hotel and not go outside,” Sundwall said, adding that they were concerned about additional explosions or other incidents. He was cleared to fly home in the early evening, when outbound flights were allowed again. Two bombing suspects were identified Thursday, and one was killed in a shootout with police Thursday night. The second suspect was captured Friday night, after police lifted a neighborhood lock down, and a resident spotted a blood trail that led to his hiding place.

of it, having both grown up in the neighborhood. Kris used to call it “the Kirby house,” but at Carnation Farms, which owned the building for many years, it had another name. “This was considered the dog house,” said Dick, explaining, that “Mr. Stuart (founder of Carnation Farm) decided he wanted to have dogs, so the guy that ran the kennel there, he usually lived here.” The name didn’t stick, though, after Dick’s family moved into the house. His father was a boiler expert, Dick explained, but he knew the previous tenant, the last kennel man at the farm, and he could list everyone who’d ever lived in the house. To the Kirbys, preserving that kind of history is just as important as preserving the way it looked. Kris sums it up simply. “Let’s keep it. We don’t want it perfect, this is an old house.”

order to fit in the new house, so she used a floor plan of the house to map out, foot by foot, where their favorite antiques would go. “In the kitchen, it was down to the inch!” she added. Most of the pieces are more than just pretty, they offer plenty of storage. Not quite enough for the couple to stick with the original no-closet design of the house, but plenty. “This is my library,” says Kris, opening the doors of one cupboard, “and this is my filing cabinet,” she continues, pulling open the drawers of a sturdy end-table. Closets were added to the bedrooms, but tucked under the slope of the roof, to make them unobtrusive, if a little short. There were a few changes the Kirbys would not even consider. The floor in the old mud room, for instance, was scarred with hatchet blows, left by someone chopping kindling wood in there. “Those are beauty marks!” said Kris. And there was one change that Dick would have liked to make, but couldn’t justify, because “structurally, the house is really sound.” “We have the squeakiest stairs in the world!” he said. “I couldn’t even sneak upstairs when I was in high school!” The house has a lot of history, and the Kirbys know most

In response to “Give us a choice: plastic or paper,” the letter in the April 3 Valley Record, while I agree with the argument that it is commendable to reuse plastic bags a second time, the problem is that they still end up in the landfill. This is a short postponement of a long-term and serious problem. The polyethylene is not biodegradable, though it does break down into microscopic synthetic granules, if exposed to sunlight (otherwise, it can take up to hundreds of years). Scientist have not been successful at proving whether these granules ever decompose fully. Their fear is that this buildup in marine and terrestrial environments and in the stomachs of wildlife, portends a bleak future compromised by plastic particles infiltrating every step in the food chain. Snoqualmie Valley Record. These would make a much better choice for garage bags and animal waste. Another problem with bags, because the state of Washington uses over 2 billion bags a year, is that 94 percent don’t get re-used or recycled. The 6 percent that do are getting tangled in the recycling machinery and halt the entire facility. Some facilities have reported 20 to 30 percent of their labor costs are devoted to getting plastic bags out of machinery; thus 70 percent of Washington recyclers want these bags out of their systems. This does not seems a “trivial problem”, nor have I found that any of the cities that have banned plastic bags report any loss of business revenue or jobs. Arguably, there are many jobs in alternative bag production and recycling, not to mention far less harm to our environment and, ultimately, the food we eat.

Mountain death

Granite Mountain’s risks were known years ago

Granite Mountain took the life of Professor John Scribner of North Bend almost 30 years ago to the day; April 16, 1983, on an unseasonably warm day. Will we ever learn that Granite Mountain features indicate that catastrophic events will occur? The trail to the top can be accessed in a much safer location. It is time to act and fix the problem before the next victim. Even one of the northwest weather and avalanche experts has been caught in an avalanche on Granite Mountain. On the Scanner Snoqualmie Police Dept. Thursday, April 18 Two-car collision: At 8:24 a.m., police were called to a two-car accident in the 7700 block of Center Boulevard Southeast. The cars collided in the intersection. No one was injured.

Monday, April 15 Suspicious behavior: At 4:37 p.m., a caller in the 7100 block of Cranberry Court Southeast complained that an unknown man was looking in her windows after ringing the doorbell several times. He was seen leaving the area in a small blue pickup. House call: At 8:26 a.m., a resident in the 6500 block of Fairway Avenue Southeast reported a suspicious call and possible fraud attempt. A man with an accent had called to say he needed to come to the person’s home to verify insurance coverage. The caller later found out the insurance company had tried to send the doctor, but had not contacted them beforehand.

Friday, April 12 Last straw: At 4:53 p.m., a caller in the 3800 block of Southeast Newton Street asked police to remove an unwanted guest from a home. The caller was not the tenant, but was calling out of concern for the tenant, as the visitor had been overheard threatening to punch someone and stab them with an ice pick. Officers responded and removed the visitor, then spoke with the victim, who admitted being the victim of several incidents of domestic violence. The unwanted guest was arrested, and denied

Tuesday, April 16

threatening the victim, but admitted to kicking in the front door once.

Tuesday, April 9 Not constructive: At 8:22 a.m., a Waste Management driver contacted police about a threatening incident that occurred earlier in the morning in the 9200 block of Merritt Avenue Southeast. The driver said he’d honked his horn at a construction truck so it would move, and the driver of that truck became very angry, swearing at him and trying to get at him. Police could not follow up because the driver could not describe the worker, and hadn’t reported the incident right away.

Monday, April 8 In memory: At 7:05 a.m., police received a report of a suspicious man at the ball fields in the 39800 block of Southeast Park Street. An officer contacted the man, who said he was standing in the field to remember his deceased brother. He also said he had an active warrant for his arrest, which he did. The officer arrested the man and confiscated a bag of tools and a glass pipe that appeared to be for smoking narcotics, but no narcotic drugs.

King County Sheriff Wednesday, April 17

Cameras, too: At 4:17 p.m., police received a burglary report from the 400 block of Healy Avenue South. Someone entered the business office, removed the security cameras, and then forced open a file cabinet to steal cash and money orders inside.

ible but conceited Toad of Toad Hall — whose passion for motor cars lands him in many scrapes. “This is a story theater production just like our annual favorite, A Christmas Carol. In fact it is written by the same author,” says director Gary Schwartz. “Story theater is where the characters tell the story using original prose and act out scenes using the original dialogue from the book.” Michael Matlock of North Bend wrote original music for the remaining songs. “I saw a workshop version of it in 1990 in Los Angeles with Sills’ company of actors, all veterans of the original Second City Improv troupe from the 1960’s and 70’s.” states Schwartz. “I know it’s been produced since in various stages in New York and Wisconsin, where Sills worked and taught. But this is the first fully formed version I know of.” Schwartz was a longtime student of both Paul Sills and Sills’ mother Viola Spolin—the creator of theater games which was the original method of improvisation. He is using the techniques developed by Spolin to train the cast to perform in Story Theater style. The cast of 13 is a combination of Valley Center Stage regulars and several new local actors. This classic runs three weekends; Thursday, Friday and Saturdays starting April 25 through May 11. The show plays at 7:30 p.m. with two matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 and 11. Tickets are $17 and $14.50 for children and seniors and can be purchased online at www.valleycenterstage.org. Valley Center Stage is located at 119 W North Bend Way in downtown North Bend on the second floor of the Masonic Lodge, above Singletrack Cycle Shop.

The foundation of the home was blown out. The result: A tunnel open to any rat who wanted the good life, nesting in a bed of home insulation. Enter Alan LaBissoniere, who runs his own varmintremoval business, Frontier Pest Control. Down in a crawlspace, LaBissoniere was on a mission to stop the intruders. LaBissoniere’s been in pest control for eight years. He started with the big companies, then went out on his own two years ago, and never looked back. “This is the best thing I’ve done yet,” LaBissoniere said. However, there’s a lot of work, a lot of study and plenty of tests when it comes to being an exterminator. That’s because the chemical that LaBissoniere handles is highly regulated. “The rule is: The label is the law,” he said. “You’ve got to understand how to apply it.”

bugs are outside, where they belong. “I tell people, if they’re inside the house, it’s not OK,” LaBissoniere said. “When they come in, we have an issue. If they’re in your house, give me a call.” On the job, LaBissoniere deploys an integrated pest management approach. First, he tries to keep the intruders out, blocking entrances with caulking and foam. Then, it’s time to trim the bushes and clean up the landscaping to discourage pests. Chemical agents are a last resort, and LaBissoniere says his primary chemical is based on natural ingredients.

Bugs don’t bother me LaBissoniere loves being his own boss. On the job, he’s seen some strange sights, visited hoarder homes stacked floor to ceiling with junk. He’s learned to know whether there are bedbugs in a room by smell. You can check for bedbugs in a hotel by checking the mattress seams. And if you find them, definitely get a new room—you don’t want to bring them home with you. Temperamentally, LaBissoniere is suit-

ed to this work, though he does get a little claustrophobic in those tight spaces. That’s where his assistant, Dave Dickinson, comes in. He’ll help Alan if he gets into a real jam, grabbing him by the feet and hauling him back out of those tight crawlspaces. Dickinson is now going through the certification process. Once done, he can take care of pest control problems on his own. It’s good work, Dickinson says. “Bugs don’t bother me,” he says. Both Alan and Dave are involved in volunteering for the King County Search and Rescue, and as emergency HAM radio operators. They’re part of SECAST, the Valley’s emergency radio broadcasting unit, and drive support vehicles for search and rescue. Frontier Pest Control serves the Valley, King County and upper Kittitas County, and is a big promoter of shopping local. “Keep your money in the Valley, because that’s where your dollar is going to be spent,” Alan says. • Reach Frontier Pest Control at (425) 577Local Owners and Employees 2944 or visit frontierbugs.com/pest-control/. Members of the local Youth Club of the Washington State Quarter Horse Youth Association have a big heart for horses. Club members named Rancho Laguna’s H.E.A.R.T. (Home of Equine Assisted Rescue Therapy) ranch in Snoqualmie as their charity of choice for 2013. Besides donating funds, the club members are committing their volunteer hours to the ranch, spending hours this winter organizing bins of tack donations, picking stalls, and grooming rescue horses and donkeys. Tina Laguna, owner and director of Rancho Laguna’s HEART, is a long-time Quarter Horse Association member and board member. Tina Laguna pastCapucine Zimmerman, youth club member, interviewed Tina to learn how her non-profit got its start and hear stories behind the rescue horses and donkeys. “I’ve been rescuing horses my entire life,” said Tina. In 2006 she opened her doors to the public. “I wanted to just fill in where there was a need. Every now and then someone would call about a neglected animal.” When Tina bought her ranch near Snoqualmie Falls in 2000, she boarded horses and rescued others. She had one boarder that “just never came back. That person never really cared about her horse. It’s unbelievable to me that someone would buy a beautiful creature just for show and not love and care for it.” Today, one of those abandoned horses is a therapy horse named We would like to take off IAMS and Eukanuba and replace it Truman. Tina tries toBest “adopt many as possible but some just with more pictures of our Seller:out” Taste as of the Wild (below).

clock when a new rescue horse first arrives. “The first two weeks are vital and usually will indicate, for those in the worst of health, whether or not they will survive” Tina said. “The rescues are usually emaciated and in bad shape. Sometimes they are so weak they cannot get up. Typically, after the initial two- week period, they are gaining weight and on the road to recovery.” Sadly however, some just don’t make it. With emotions in her voice, Tina shares the story of “Rocky Man” who had been hanging in there eating some, but not enough. “He had been fed such horrible things in his previous environment that his body had already begun to shut down,” she said. While Tina is always sad at the loss of a rescue, she is happy that he spent the last weeks of his life at Rancho Laguna’s HEART surrounded by loving, caring friends. Other rescues happily move on to families who are thrilled to adopt them. Ruby is the most recent to be placed in her forever home. Ruby and her mom, Big Rose, age 30, came to Tina together. Big Rose was 450 to 500 pounds underweight, and the worst case Tina has ever seen. Mom and baby were so severely underweight they could not lie down, even with stalls full of extra shavings. Tina never gave up, and with added pads, blankets and shavings she made them comfortable while building their health and weight back up. Ruby became the love of a little girl named Gia, who volunteered at HEART last summer and adopted her. What led Tina to create the emotional therapy program? “It’s a personal story,” she says. “Horses will push you hard because they know. A woman I worked with this year had just lost her

HORSES FROM 12 “She and I walked through the pasture and Lil’ Rosie, a rescue donkey, came right up

to the mom and put her head on her. They stayed that way for about an hour.” Tina feels they shared a level of sadness as a common bond. Lil’ Rosie had lost her family

too—she understands loss and provides comfort for humans grieving a loss of their own. “I thought it was sad to hear the way some horses can be treated by their owners,” said

Graysen Stroud, Youth Club president. “Tina’s work is so important. Our club is happy to be giving a little back to Tina and her rescue horses and donkeys.”

This spring, Tina was listed as a resource with Animal Control and immediately began to receive calls. “I tend to reserve my rescue for the ‘worst of the worst’ cases.” In order to support the ranch, Tina puts on fundraisers. Rancho Laguna’s HEART operational cost and feed is about $50,000 a year. Tina is currently trying to fund a small covered arena for her emotional therapy programs, which would allow two horses at a time in a covered area. “The need is increasing for this type of therapy; my dreams are to be able to meet these needs.” Barbara Crosby, club fundraising chair said, “This year, I am pleased to say we are increasing fundraising efforts in the community and expanding our knowledge of rescue horses.” Club members are looking forward to their next work party out at Rancho Laguna’s HEART. Mount Si softball back to firing on all cylinders as hits, tight pitching power Interlake win By Seth Truscott Editor

Tamarra Crowe’s biggest fan—her little niece Mia—jumps into her arms following the big game. Mia and her parents, Ryan and Jamie Hildebrand, camp out on the other side of the fence at every Mount Si girls softball game, rain or shine, though a downpour may send them back to the car for a dashboard box seat. Now raking the field, shortstop Crowe had just had a big game, contributing a homer to help Mount Si keep its dreams of glory alive for her senior year. “This puts us in a good spot,” says Crowe. “We have a lot more energy. We’re batting more and we’re getting a lot of hits. Fielding is good.” Facing Interlake at home Tuesday, April 16, Mount Si beat the Saints, 6-4. Sophomore pitcher Paige Weatherbee striking out four batters and gave up 13 hits, while Interlake’s pitcher gave 11. It was a nailbiter for a while, scoreless in the first two innings, and then Interlake took the lead, 4-3. But Weatherbee’s pitching and strong Mount Si defense, combined with a few crucial hits, saved the day. Crowe knocked her home run in the third to start catching up with the Saints, totalling four RBIs. See SOFTBALL, 19
