Owner Dianne Masaoka said the restaurant and store will be closing this weekend, citing personal reasons. “We’ve really enjoyed getting to know our regular customers,” new owner Masaoka said. “We really love Alpenland and know they do, too. We’re very sad.” Known to Islanders as the place to get everything from imported chocolates to hand-

Erwin will run for Pos. 6 on the Mercer Island City Council, the seat now held by Mike Grady. Islander Benson Wong announced his run for Council last week. Grausz, who has served on the Council since 1999, will run to retain his seat, Pos. 2.

Pool loses less money in 2012 than in 2011 MISD, City joint meeting covers pool, siting of new schools By Megan Managan

During the Mercer Island City Council and School Board joint meeting on Thursday, both groups got an update on Mary Wayte Pool. John Walker, with Olympic Cascade Aquatics (OCA), the company that runs the pool, presented the operations report for the 2012 Fiscal Year. “This is a good news report,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Gary Plano. “This is a community asset that so many people depend on.” Walker said the pool doors remain open, which is the No. 1 goal, and it is an extremely busy place. OCA took over pool operations on Jan. 1, 2011. During that time the pool has remained open and used by the high school swimming and water polo teams, offered classes and extended hours to over 100 per week to accommodate all of its offerings. “It’s a lot of chaos, but a lot

A break in a water main at Mercer Island’s Shorewood Heights Apartments last Thursday evening affected many apartments across several buildings. According to a person who answered the phone at the Shorewood office who only gave his name as Tucker, the reason that the pipe broke was likely because of age. “It was not overloaded nor was there any construction near the break,” he said. According to resident Nicole Howard Radliff, several buildings were without water on and off for a couple of days. The water system at Shorewood is not owned or maintained by the City of Mercer Island. When the development was built, it negotiated its own arrangement with the City of Seattle Public Utilities for its water supply. City of Mercer Island maintenance people were contacted and offered their assistance. Shorewood hired a private contractor to repair the break. The break has been fixed.

That money would allow the pool to get the needed repairs and upgrades to the infrastructure, to continue to keep it open. During the meeting, the two groups also discussed the school district’s continued work toward building a new school. Several members of the board expressed interest in looking at what it would take to build a school near the old recycling center location next to Mercerdale Park. Though members of the City Council said the school board is welcome to study the site, the city is unwilling to give up any park space. Mercer Island City Manager Rich Conrad updated the members on the continued work to find new homes for Youth Theatre Northwest, should the school district decide to build a new school on the North Mercer campus. While no site has been officially identified, several places may be available for YTN to move. Conrad said the city will have more information about possibilities during the June retreat. Plano said he knows several of the other North Mercer tenants have also been actively looking for new places, but nothing official has been announced.

Study of state’s Death With Dignity law says it is not abused

A police dog helped to catch a suspect on the run after midnight on Tuesday, April 9. After stealing three bottles of vodka and a protein shake from Albertsons, a 20-yearold Kent man eluded police officers for several blocks until a veteran police dog named Vader and his handler, Officer Sam Hovenden, arrived from the Redmond Police Department. Two officers assisted the K-9 unit in tracking the suspect where he had last been seen, in a wooded area above a fourfoot retaining wall on a steep incline between Island Crest Way and 80th Avenue S.E. A Mercer Island police officer had initially encountered the suspect as he was passing McDonalds in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E., after police responded to a 911 hang-up call from Albertsons and the report of the theft, witnessed by a store employee. Last Wednesday, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance that looked at the medical group’s implementation of the state’s Death With Dignity Act. The conclusion might seem boring: “Overall, our Death With Dignity program has been well accepted by patients and clinics,” the study reads; except for the fact that what used to be called “assisted suicide” was an incredibly controversial issue when the state law passed by initiative in 2008. The study underscores one of the most notable features of Washington’s experience with Death With Dignity: Nobody talks about it all that much, at least outside of the circles of dying patients and those who care for them. There have been few media stories on people who have utilized the law. Little attention is paid to the statistical reports related to Death With Dignity that are posted each year by the Department of Health. This sharply contrasts with the experience of Oregon, which in 1997 became the first state to pass a Death With Dignity law, giving rise to count-

less articles, a documentary (“How to Die in Oregon”) and a U.S. Supreme Court case (ultimately upholding the law). “It’s a different cultural moment,” explains Anthony Back, a doctor at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and one of the authors of the paper published today. “Oregon did a huge paving of the way.” And what he says happened in that state is that the fears of Death With Dignity opponents didn’t materialize. The act didn’t become a “slippery slope,” encouraging suicide among people who were really at death’s door. Neither, he says, was it targeted at “a vulnerable population with no medical insurance.” Instead, Back observes, very small numbers of Oregonians took advantage of the law, and those who did tended to be educated, upper middle class and “very, very determined people who really want control.” The same has happened here. Seattle Cancer Care Alliance — a center uniting doctors from Fred Hutchinson, UW Medicine and Seattle Children’s — analyzed information about its 40 patients who took their own lives between March 2009 and December
2011. “Typically white, male and well-educated,” according to the study, they nearly universally said a prime motivation for them was not wanting to lose their autonomy. The study also went into a variety of ways that the alliance has attempted to make doctors and staffers comfortable with the organization’s implementation of the law. The alliance doesn’t compel anyone’s participation or post information about Death With Dignity in public spaces. It also requires patients to sign an agreement that they will not take their own lives in a public way. Back says this approach has worked, illustrating that “there are ways that an institution can handle” this type of law, even when a number of staffers, as at the alliance, question “in their heart of hearts” whether it’s the right thing to do. One of the reasons for the study, according to a press release put out by the alliance, is that several other states are now considering Death With Dignity laws. And while Death With Dignity has become something of a non-issue here, that is not necessarily the case elsewhere. In Montana today, the state Senate moved to have a floor vote on a bill that would imprison doctors for up to 10 years if they help a patient die.

he Washington Newspaper Publisher Association held its annual “Press Day” at the Washington state Legislature last week. The event is an opportunity for newspaper people to hear directly from sitting legislators, both Republican and Democrat, who come to speak informally and answer questions with newspaper people in the very midst of discussions on the House or Senate floor. This year, members of the press heard about everything from problems with designing and funding the Interstate 5 Columbia River Crossing bridge to the difficulties finding common ground on changes to public disclosure laws. What was evident was the expression of equal parts passion and frustration from the lawmakers. They are keenly aware of their status with citizens who blame bipartisan bickering for inaction and gridlock. While lawmakers try their damndest to move forward with key bills that they hope will move people and goods, create jobs and educate children, they must also deal with the baggage of past policies and mistakes. An example is the huge overhead of pensions, cost overruns, mistakes and unfunded mandates, increasing social services costs, etc. Moving forward means a lot of looking back. ercer Island is set to lose yet another Island touchstone, Alpenland. After barely a year, its new owners have decided to let it go. There will be loud protests and expressions of sadness and regret tinged with shock. These words suggest that the restaurant and cafe is always busy, full of patrons. It is tough to run a small business. Competition for diners is fierce. There are more choices not only for dining in but for takeout. Not only are there pizza places, yogurt shops, bagels and more, groceries stores have larger deli departments. The cost of running a business is not necessarily related to its size, particularly for those who might import goods. There are labor costs, taxes and new regulations. It requires those resources and more. Time. Island institution or not, if you asked an Island small business owner what they really need to succeed, it is not admiration, but shoppers and diners.

The victim then received several letters informing her of attempts to open new cards with her personal information. She closed all of her accounts and a fraud alert was instated.

Unknown suspects used information on two of a 41-year-old Mercer Island woman’s credit/debit accounts in four attempts to make purchases at three separate locations in the United States. The victim became aware of the incidents through fraud alerts that captured the information. How the suspects obtained the victim’s information is unknown.

Bike theft: Someone stole a blue Schwinn bicycle worth $300 at the park-and-ride in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way sometime during or after April 5. The bike belonged to a 20-year-old woman and had been locked to a bike rack. Fraud: $400 was stolen from a 40-year-old Mercer Island man’s BECU account between 12 and 6:30 p.m. Several unauthorized charges were made from a location in San Jose, California. Malicious mischief: A 59-year-old woman reported that her ex-boyfriend damaged her car, a Lexus, during the night in the 8800 block of S.E. 45th Street, in a neighborhood south of the library. Plastic covering the driver’s door lock was removed, and the total loss was $200.

A mean sums household incomes and divides by the number of households. Wikipedia defines the median as a “numerical value separating the higher half of a sample from the lower half.” According to the City of Mercer Island website, the estimated mean family income on Mercer Island is $219,053. The estimated median family income, which I used, is $145,774. I, too, am tired of being bullied by politicians. The state Legislature began studying tolling for SR-520 in 2008. That was the time for input on policy. Yet we have a Johnny-come-lately City Council member who suddenly advocates revisiting the issue. We can debate policy forever and
in the meantime we risk our bridges falling down and our infrastructure further deteriorating. Such delaying tactics not only cost money but risk lives and the health of Puget Sound economy as the bridge ages. We are being penny wise and pound foolish when we fight tooth and nail against paying for essential infrastructure. We need to look at what’s really so, solve problems, step into action, and create a future that we are proud to leave our children. Carol Friends

Burglary: A home in the 8200 block of S.E. 62nd Street, a few blocks northwest of Pioneer Park, was burglarized during daylight hours between 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Burglars entered the house through a back door to the garage that had been left open. The house did not have an alarm and the burglars stole multiple items, including unexpired 12-day Disney passes, four passports, five Social Security cards, checkbooks,
flash drives with tax information, two Dell laptops and an Apple iTouch. Bike accident: A bicyclist crashed at 4:25 p.m. in the 4300 block of East Mercer Way when she braked to avoid a collision with a vehicle that she saw was going to pull out in front of her. The bike’s brakes locked up and the bicyclist, a 26-year-old woman, was thrown over her handlebars onto the pavement. An aid unit responded and the woman was treated for her injuries at the scene. Eight Mercer Island runners were registered for the 2013 Boston Marathon, which was the site of several explosions during the race. Reports indicate that two explosions went off near the finish line of the race, around the four-hour mark of the historic event. As of the Reporter’s press time on Monday, information was still coming in concerning the incident. According to the Boston Marathon website, there were eight people from Mercer Island registered to participate in the race. Of those eight, three had
finish times listed online before the explosion. Peter Noone finished the event in 3 hours, 33:15 minutes. Jeff Poppe was listed as finishing the event in 4:09.28, while Lisa Spencer was listed as finishing in 4:09.11. Robert Cremin, Rhonda Glass, Roger Larson, Chelese Longwith and Timothy Steege were all listed on the Boston Marathon site as registered for the event, but do not have finish times. Police reportedly stopped the race at the 25-mile mark after the explosions at the finish line. Updates on the story will be posted online at www. mi-reporter.com. Input wanted on city’s Six Year Transportation Program update Whether you bike, drive or walk to get around, it is time to weigh in on the City of Mercer Island’s plan to maintain and improve bike paths, sidewalks, trails and streets. Mercer Island and other cities in Washington state are preparing annual updates to their six-year transportation improvement program, called the “TIP.” The TIP includes roadway, pedestrian and bicycle projects planned for the six-year period beginning in 2014. The process of updating Mercer Island’s TIP includes opportunities for the public to provide input on what they would like to see in the update. The public comment period begins April 1 and runs through the end of the month.

Saturday mail service to continue for now The U.S. Postal Service announced on Wednesday, April 10, that it would be withdrawing its plan to end Saturday mail service. The Board of Governors of the U.S. Postal Service met on Tuesday, April 9, and decided to take back the plan because Congress has prohibited the change. According to a press release from the USPS: “By including restrictive language in the Continuing Resolution, Congress has prohibited implementation of a new national delivery schedule for mail and packages, which would consist of package delivery Monday through Saturday and mail delivery Monday through Friday, and which would have taken effect the week of Aug. 5, 2013.” The press release went on to say the board was disappointed with the Congressional action and has instructed the Postal Service to delay the new schedule implementation. The board also noted it hopes Congress would pass legislation allowing the USPS “to implement a financially appropriate and responsible delivery schedule.” The board said it continues to support the new delivery schedule, which would help generate upwards of $2 billion in savings for the USPS.

“To restore the Postal Service to long-term financial stability, the Postal Service requires the flexibility to reduce costs and generate new revenues to close an ever widening budgetary gap,” said the press release about the change. “It is not possible for the Postal Service to meet significant cost reduction goals without changing its delivery schedule — any rational analysis of our current financial condition and business options leads to this conclusion. Delaying responsible changes to the Postal Service business model only increases the potential that the Postal Service may become a burden to the American taxpayer, which is avoidable.” In light of the delay to the cost-saving measures, the USPS hopes to reopen negotiations with the postal unions, while also asking management to find other options to increase revenue. Semi-truck dumps sticky mess on I-5 An accident involving a disabled minivan and a semi-truck carrying a large quantity of resin glue left most of northbound Interstate 5 near the Highway 18 junction a sticky mess late April 10 and into early Thursday morning, April 11. According to the Washington State Patrol, a disabled minivan was in one of the center lanes of I-5 when the semi-truck struck it from behind. The accident left the 55-yearold driver of the minivan with serious injuries, and she was transported to Harborview Medical Center. The semi-truck was carrying resin glue, and one of the “pouches” of resin glue it was carrying burst open as a result of the crash. Reports estimate the amount of glue at 20,000 gallons. Efforts between the state Department of Transportation and Department of Ecology saw the resin glue cleaned up by early Thursday morning, although the work crews continued to bog down traffic during the morning commute.

Community news Fifth-grader wins again at state science fair Ellie Nomicos attended the Washington State Science Fair again this year and won first place in her category for the thirdstraight year. She also won a special award from the Pacific Science Center for her project. There were over 550 participants. Nomicos is a fifth-grader at West Mercer Elementary, in Mrs. Kirsten Bourke’s class. Nomicos, a swimmer, did a research project on measuring the effect of height on a swimmer’s speed. Nomicos analyzed the times of the swimmers from the London 2012 Olympics to determine how much height affects a swimmer’s speed in each stroke (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke). As she expected, height made the biggest difference in freestyle and backstroke, and a very slight difference in breaststroke. It surprised her that height did not make a significant difference for butterfly. The fair was held April 5-6 at Bremerton High School.

Spicy Sombreros, a West Mercer team, took first place in the elementary level structural engineering competition with “Twist-ORama.” The team includes: Justin Skene, Bridger Bourke, Ichi Nakata, Akhil Pothenini, Ryan Shobe, Julian Sanders and Kevin
Li. The Spicy Sombreros also earned a Spirit of DI award for displaying exceptional DI spirit during their Instant Challenge. Los Tacos Hermanos, an IMS team, took first place in the middle level improv competition with “Change in Realitee.” The team includes: Ben Stoops, Cole Nielsen, Verli Chen and Bryan Zhao. The Mercer Island High School team, The Illusions, took first place in the second level structural engineering competition in “Twist-ORama.” The team includes: Trevor Gullstad, Jay Rosenstein, Jason McRuer, Aidan Wang, Grace Hunter and Josh Park. The Illusions also earned a Da Vinci award for outstanding creativity. All teams were coached by Mark Headlee. All first and second place teams will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., in late May to compete in the Global Finals Tournament. There will be about 1,000 teams in attendance representing the top five percent of the most creative students in the world.
Students receive honors from AAUW Young women from the Bellevue and Mercer Island School Districts were honored at a reception by the Lake Washington Branch of the American Association of University Women as part of AAUW Scholars program on April 17. Each was chosen by her school for outstanding scholarship in math, science or technology. Mary Wingerson received an award for mathematics and Rachel Van Gelder was awarded for science. The Amer ican Association of University Women is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls. It is open to women with degrees and certificates from regionally accredited institutions as well as students enrolled in bachelor or associates degree programs.
State superintendent likes House schools budget Washington state Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn
praised the state House of Representatives budget for schools in the coming biennium. In a statement released last week, he said, “The state House budget proposal, released yesterday, puts us on the path to fully funding basic education by 2018. It aligns with the initial stages of education reform as outlined in Substitute House Bill 2776 and the work of the Quality Education Council, which I used as the basis for my budget request.” The proposal includes $225.4 million for K-3 class-size reduction. Next, materials, supplies and operating costs total $461.3 million. Pupil transportation would be funded at 100 percent, $144.1 million, by the 2014-15 school year. Full-day kindergarten ($91.5 million): The number of state-funded full-day kindergarten classrooms would be increased from the current 22 percent to 38 percent in 2013-14, and 53 percent in 2014-15. The work continues to get Washington state to 100 percent by 2017-18. Budget negotiations to continue this week to find money for schools According to the Daily Olympian, closed-door negotiations will take place between House and Senate leaders to reconcile the two chambers’ budget proposals, which vary greatly in their reliance on tax increases and in how they approach cuts to social services. The Senate’s budget proposes no new taxes, while the House would levy taxes on bottled water, extend the

state’s beer tax and eliminate 15 tax breaks for businesses. That revenue would go toward K-12 education, which the state Supreme Court has ordered the Legislature to fully fund by 2018. The Senate proposes deeper cuts to social services to free up more money for education.

There are also wineries where the grapes are brought in from Eastern Washington, and the winemaking actually takes place in Woodinville. I was in Woodinville on a Saturday. It was not a specifically important Saturday, except that the weather was wonderful. The traffic was fierce; the parking was scarce. Betz Family Winery did have its pick-up of ordered wine. Traffic into Betz was directed by police. I commented that I would not like to be a Woodinville resident who had to do my chores on the weekend. Whenever we visit Napa and Sonoma, we rarely visit more than five wineries per day. We usually plan to stop for lunch, but it never happens. We always end up having an early dinner. You can’t do a winery justice if you blitz in and out. You don’t savor the wine or listen to their history. However, the California wineries are closer together. In Washington, they are not only spread out but sometimes hard to find. Woodinville is a half hour, 20-mile drive from Mercer Island. Plan on visiting Woodinville more than once. As you understand the layout, Woodinville wine touring will become easier.

The Baer Winery has a tasting room in the Woodinville warehouse wine district on 144th Avenue N.E. and has tastings on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. are coming to visit. Aunt Minnie’s favorite wine is white, but she can’t remember the brand or varietal, but it has a grape on the label. This is also for people who have never visited wineries. Chateau Ste. Michelle is the most polished with a very informational wine tour. The surrounding gardens and landscaping are breathtaking. Then, drive across the street to Columbia and then visit Januik/Novelty Hill, which is right behind Columbia. Finish off with a late lunch/early dinner at Red Hook Brewery, which is just east of Columbia. All these three have food available. Columbia serves flatbread pizzas on Wednesday through Sunday. Novelty Hill offers a seasonal menu on the weekends. Chateau Ste. Michelle has a wonderful gift shop where
salami, cheese and crackers can be purchased. Food is important while wine tasting. Our daughter brought bottles of water and a selection of crackers in the car truck.
The tourist district Woodinville sponsors a First Thursday Wine Walk in the Hollywood District. While it might be crowded, participants are assured that the wineries are open on the first Thursday of the month from 4 to 8 p.m. $20 per person buys 15 tasting tickets. Bring your own glass; cash only.
The warehouse district In a couple of industrial parks just north of the tourist area is the hottest spot for wine tasting in Woodinville. On the third Thursday, the

Make sure to visit William Church Winery, which is owned by Leslie Lind Balsley and her husband, Rod. Leslie grew up on Mercer Island and graduated from Mercer Island High School. They have a tasting room in both the warehouse district and also the tourist district.

The Mercer Island boys soccer team easily defeated Bellevue on Tuesday, April 9, in a special tribute game for former head coach Steve Newman. The final score was 5-1. With the win, the Islanders moved into sole possession of the No. 2 position in the KingCo conference with a 4-0-3 league record and 5-1-3 overall. “So far the season has been going pretty well. We had a couple ties that should have been wins, but overall we have been playing quality soccer and the players are focusing on each game at a time,” said head coach Colin Rigby. “We look forward to the second half of the season and expect to continue to grow as a team and continue to succeed.” Mercer Island got off to a quick start in the game against Bellevue, scoring all five goals in the first half of the game. A Ryan Hill goal followed, this time assisted by Sean Bender in the 16th minute. Hill then scored his second goal of the night unassisted in the 23rd minute to lift the Islanders to a 4-0 lead. In the 26th minute, Islander Sean Nevin scored off a long kick that zoomed straight to the back corner of the goal, lifting the team to a 5-0 score. Bellevue made its only goal of the night with a Bennett Bugbee penalty kick in the second half. At halftime the Islanders honored former head coach Steve Newman, who died in

The Mercer Island fastpitch team improved to a 4-6 overall record after splitting its games last week. The Islanders lost to Lake Washington on Tuesday, April 9, before beating non-conference opponent West Seattle on Thursday, April 11. On Tuesday, against Lake Washington, the Islanders lost 6-2. The Kangs scored first, earning a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning, followed by two more runs in the second and a fifth in the top of the third. Sports briefs Shields brothers shine for Mount Olive lacrosse Mercer Island residents and brothers Daniel and Matt Shields both play lacrosse for Mount Olive College in North Carolina and are leading the team and nation in points. Junior Daniel Shields is currently No. 2 in the country in points per game, scoring an average of 5.45, while earning an average of three assists a game. He also ranks 23rd in goals per game with 2.45 and 47th in shot percentage at .509. Younger brother Matt, a freshman, is 12th in points per game with 4.18, and seventh in assists at two per match. He scores an average of 2.18 goals per game. The team is 7-5 so far this season and will begin the conference tournament in mid-April. The team is in fourth place in the Conference Carolinas.

Team Stars & Stripes to a big win during the Global Bowl Torino in Italy last week. The Island native played with some of the top football players from around the country against the Italian U-19 National team in Torino, Italy. Bean passed for two touchdowns during the 67-0 win for the U.S. team. The first came as a 44-yard pass during the second quarter, and the second a 12-yard pass at the end of the third quarter.
Matt Boyd added to college baseball Pitcher of the Year list Mercer Island native and pitcher for Oregon State University Matt Boyd has been added to the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Pitcher of the Year watch list. Boyd is 7-1 this season for the Beavers and is 3-1 in Pac-12 play. He has earned Pac-12 pitcher of the week honors twice so far this season. The No. 5 OSU baseball team will be in Seattle this weekend for a three game series against the University of Washington at Husky Ball Park April 19-21. Boyd is projected to be the starting pitcher during Friday’s
game. The team will also play Seattle University on Monday, April 22 at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
Little League opening day features Edgar Martinez The Mercer Island Little League will host its annual Opening Day ceremony on Saturday, April 20, at the South Mercer Playfields. This year’s guest speaker will be former Seattle Mariner Edgar Martinez. The event begins at 11 a.m. and will include the Mariner Moose, making a special appearance. The event is being emceed by Aaron Kornblum. Opening day features a raffle, a silent auction of signed Martinez paraphernalia, Little League T-shirts and more items. Mercer Island 1st Quarter Market Snap Shot Listing Inventory on Mercer Island has been hovering at a ten year low for 5 quarters and mirrors the Puget Sound market. After rising for 4 quarters the average list price has evened out while the average median price has risen for the 5th consecutive quarter. The asking prices of pending properties continue to increase. Below the 1 million dollar price level, demand on Mercer Island completely outstrips supply, while between 1 and 2 million dollars supply and demand are about even. Only when you get over 2 million dollars do you see fewer buyers than listings. We now have seen 3 consecutive quarters of rising sales prices on the Island.
