Permanent lessons, temporary classrooms

Homes demo’ed to make way for new drugstore

Explore the pros and cons of portables, as Valley district adds more movable rooms

Several locals watched as decades-old houses met the wrecking ball in North Bend last week to make way for a new drugstore. Demolition came for five homes on the site of the future Bartell Drugs at Bendigo Boulevard and Park Street in North Bend. The drugstore, planned to open in mid2013, is a new concept store for Bartell. One thing was salvaged from the demolition: The plants. Several large, decades-old rhododendrons and other mature vegetation were saved and relocated to the Nursery at Mount Si in March.

Bike-riding burglar busts into North Bend hardware store, leaves empty-handed By Carol Ladwig Staff Reporter

Scared off by an alarm, a man breaking into the North Bend Ace Hardware store early Thursday, April 18, left the store empty-handed. Security cameras around the building captured images of the man fleeing the store on a bicycle. The man broke a window to get into the store, presumably to rob it, at 4:45 a.m. Thursday morning. As soon as he entered the building, the audible burglar alarm sounded and the man fled. It’s not clear what he was looking for in the store, because he was inside so briefly, said North Bend Police Chief Mark Toner, one of the officers on the

case. However, the alarm did its job. “All the store lost was the broken window,” said Toner, adding that he is a strong advocate of alarms, both silent and audible, for homes and businesses. “From a protection standpoint, an audible alarm is the way to go,” he said. Toner also advocates for security cameras, especially for businesses, although he points out that a home security system took the images last month of a pregnant woman breaking into a North Bend home. Plans have changed significantly for a proposed hotel project in North Bend, and may continue to change, residents learned at a public hearing April 10. The project, proposed by New Sky Hotel, LLC, calls for up to four buildings on a 9.3-acre lot on the northeast corner of the Bendigo Boulevard and South Fork Avenue Southwest intersection. It would require two variances in the city’s shoreline and critical areas codes, the subject of the hearing. Project consultant Gil Hulsmann, in

what was reported as a self-inflicted shooting. Snoqualmie Police Capt. Nick Almquist, speaking to the Record, said there was an emergency 911 response to the lodge around 7 a.m. Monday. The woman, 65, of Kirkland, had been staying at the Falls over the past several days, and was reportedly depressed. She reportedly shot herself in the chest while sitting in her car in the parking lot. When officers arrived, she was still

presenting his case for the two variances, gave an overview of the project and its evolution since the land owners, represented at the hearing by Sun Choi, filed their application in January, 2011. Early plans showed four buildings for hotel, restaurant, parking and conference facilities, arranged in a way that required filling in three wetlands on the property. Since then, the number of buildings has shrunk, the buildings have been sited further from the floodway, and the company voluntarily conducted a habitat assessment and began monitoring groundwater. The project must meet a “zero-riseplus” requirement, so that none of the earth-moving done on-site can increase the height of the property and change the runoff flow, plus the property must manage all of its own stormwater. About 20 citizens attended the hearing, but only a handful spoke. Most were extremely concerned about runoff. Staff recommended approval, provided the project meets all other city permit and engineering reviews, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approves the project, the applicant builds a public nature trail and kiosk, and the applicant mitigates the wetland filling by buying credits from Snohomish Basin Mitigation Bank. This mitigation bank, said Gina Estep, director of planning and economic development for North Bend, is within the same basin as the wetlands.

PORTABLE FROM 1 Sorenson’s portable, where she’s taught her entire time at FCES, is the clear destination for the more hands-on projects of fifth graders. What makes it all work is Sorenson’s solid structure for each class period, and the invaluable help of volunteer parents like Mike Hedrick. It also doesn’t hurt that the portables, removed from the main school building and reserved for the older students, are actually quieter and sometimes more comfortable than the brick-and-mortar classrooms. “I actually prefer the portable,” says Sorenson, for those reasons. Carl Larson is not surprised. As the plant operations manager for the Snoqualmie Valley School District, he hears from many of the teachers in the district’s 59 portable classroom units that they would rather stay put than move to permanent buildings. Maybe it’s because the portables, at roughly 1,000 square feet each, are no more or less crowded than a typical classroom. Maybe it’s the windows, or the quick access to the outdoors. Whatever else it may be, it’s definitely the climate control.

“Each portable has its own heat pump,” Larson said, so these classrooms are usually cooler on those warm spring days than any classroom in the main building. They are misnamed, though, Larson points out. “They’re really more modular buildings,” he said. Intended as temporary classroom space for schools that don’t have enough permanent capacity for the growing numbers of students, the structures are neither portable nor temporary, once they’re installed on-site to the district’s standards. Each unit, usually two classrooms to a portable, must have a 100-mph roof, cementboard lap siding, a more durable carpet, thicker floor joists to keep the room from bouncing, thicker walls with more insulation and improved doors and hardware for security from weather and theft. All of these standards are upgrades from the standard bare-bones portable, Larson says, but they are necessary for the district’s climate. “You can get anything you want in a portable,” he adds, “you just have to pay for it.” “And if you buy the cheapest portables, you end up with a lot of maintenance costs,” added district finance manager Ryan Stokes.

A portable unit of two classrooms averages about $100,000 installed, but Stokes says the costs vary widely with the location, because of siting issues such as being in the floodway and infrastructure items like water and sewer, electrical, network needs and permit costs. Most of the portable classrooms don’t have running water, for instance. Drinking water is available from water coolers in each classroom, and weekly deliveries of a halfdozen bottles to each classroom. To go to the restrooms, students must go outside to the main building, which was a lot easier before school officials increased security in December. Now with all the side doors locked, students must trek around the building to come in the front door, “but we’re used to it now,” said one student. Electrical service is wired over from the school building, usually through suspended cables. Network service comes in the same way, except in the collection of portables in the Mount Si High School parking lot. These buildings include a network server room with its own network drop and wireless, plus restrooms and running water in all the classroms. The school district will add 14 new classrooms, three double units at Chief Kanim Middle School, three at Twin Falls Middle School and one at Cascade View Elementary School in June, to prepare for next year’s changes. Snoqualmie Middle School will be added to the Mount Si High School campus as a freshman-only school, and students who would have gone to SMS will be transitioned to Chief Kanim or Twin Falls, neither of which has the permanent capacity for the increased enrollment. Next week, get a closer look at the effect of portables on student education.

Gardeners and volunteers are sought for the first organizing meeting of a new community garden in downtown Fall City, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the Fall City Masonic Lodge, 4304 337th Pl. S.E. The vision includes creating a place for people to learn about gardening and fresh produce for the Fall City Community Food Pantry. That woman is being sought in several burglary cases in several cities right now. ACE’s cameras caught fairly good images of the suspect in last week’s break-in, although the man’s face is not very clear, and he may be wearing something over at least part of his face. Police are describing him as about 5’9”, and wearing a darkcolored hoodie with lighter printing on the front and back, and jeans. He also wore dark gloves with reflective strips on the backs, dark shoes, and had a pouch hanging from his belt on his back. The bicycle appeared to be a drop-handled bike, with reflectors on the wheels. Anyone with information on this suspect can call Sgt. Toner at 888-4433, or send an e-mail message to mark.toner@ kingcounty.gov.

What you didn’t know about the Valley food bank Spring is a crucial time for busy North Bend pantry; you can be a part Over the last few years, Heidi Dukich has given out countless pieces of paper and pens, advising her clients at the Mount Si Food Bank to write down their goals and resources, and visualize a pathway out of poverty, toward success. She points them in the direction of the library, where anyone can book two hours of Internet time and find more resources, or classes. Helping people is about a lot more than food. But the act of giving food can be the pathway to changing lives permanently and for Seth Truscott the better. Education is being pushed Valley Record here, as is connection. Example: Editor The contact cards at places like the North Bend Library, giving details of ways to get food help for teens and seniors. Or the social service representatives who meet people, often outside for a lack of space. Dukich, who’s helmed the food bank as director for three years, brought last week’s showing of “A Place at the Table” to North Bend Theatre for a reason. It’s important for the community to be aware of what hunger really is, and who the hungry are. While homelessness has gotten a lot of attention in the Valley in recent months—campers were banned in North Bend and will soon be banned in Snoqualmie, camps were demolished, and a winter shelter opened—it’s crucial to understand that the hungry in the Valley aren’t just the homeless. The hungry are local families whose breadwinners are paid minimum wage. The hungry are the children of the needy. Some are local seniors whose medical costs make it hard to pay for food. There are as many paths to hunger as there are different people who use the food bank. Help Valley’s schools grow and prosper

As a forest manager for over 20 years, I appreciate the complexities of the ecosystem in which we are fortunate to live. A forest system involves a complex balance to grow and flourish — from ancient snowcapped mountaintops to the delicate forest floor in which young seedlings need nourishment to take root each year. I draw a similar analogy to the complexities of sustaining a healthy school system. It takes seasoned education professionals who can adapt to seasons of change, together

with involved families and community support, to ensure our children have the “nourishment” and foundation they need to grow and prosper into contributing adults themselves. I feel that Superintendent Joel Aune, the administration staff, principals of our schools and our teachers have done an outstanding job of developing, teaching, nourishing, and sustaining our Snoqualmie Valley students. I’ve seen up close, as a former school board member and parent of two children who have graduated from our schools, that our academic initiative produces the highest quality of students in the state and country.

I am writing this letter because, sadly, some in our community continue to attack the efforts of the district as it is trying to move our schools forward. The ongoing negativity is only hurting our students, undermining our educators who have devoted their lives to doing what’s best for children, and weakening our special community. Instead, our schools need our collective positive support, as they work to implement changes that help prepare our students for a changing world. This community needs to be part of the solution that supports our professional educators in their important work to create the best possible educational experience for our children. We need to put our energy toward helping our schools be successful in their momentum and innovation. Just as forces must work

together to respect and sustain the health of a forest, we must work together as a community to respect and sustain our schools. With positive support, we can ensure the health and well-being of our community’s most important resource—its children. Rudy Edwards North Bend Former SVSD 410 board member

Neil V. Dubey February 14, 1921 to March 30, 2013

Longtime Valley resident Neil Dubey died March 30, 2013, at the age of 92, at Pine Lake Adult Family Home. Neil had spent the greater part of his life living in the Snoqualmie Valley, on Tokul Road. Neil was born in Snohomish, WA, to Leslie and Molly Dubey. He moved with them, and his brother Jack, to Tokul Creek in 1924, attended school at Snoqualmie Falls and graduated from high school in Snoqualmie. He married Juanita (Gratzer) Dubey in 1941, and they moved to Tokul Creek, where they built their home. Neil served in the Merchant Marine during World War II as a third mate. He traveled the world. During that time, his brother Jack was lost at sea on another merchant ship. After the war, he worked for a time at Weyerhaeuser, then for Puget Power at the Snoqualmie Falls power plant. He went on to start his own electrical contracting business, which he kept at until about age 85. During that period, he bought several real estate properties, and the former furniture store in Snoqualmie, now the Snoqualmie Eagles. He followed his love of boating up the Canada coast for 10-plus years, selling wares for the winter and summer seasons to the general stores from Bella Coula to Prince Rupert. He always enjoyed meeting many people along the way, in every aspect of his life’s journey. Neil is survived by his daughter, Dawn Kissinger of Easton, her husband Bob, two grandsons, Robert Hamerly of Snoqualmie, his wife Heather and their children Jack and Lydia, and Ryan Hamerly of Valdez, Alaska, and his wife Shannon and their children Quentin and Savannah. 771979

Tolt student goes to regional spelling bee

Book smarts

Young Valley readers bring A-games to Book Battle finals

Tolt Middle School student Gabrielle (Gabby) Klocek represented the Riverview School District at the King and Snohomish Counties Regional Spelling Bee at Town Hall in Seattle on Sunday, March 24. Seventy area students participated in the contest, the most ever in the bee’s 15-year history. Klocek made it to the fourth round, conquering the words sitzmark (a depression left in the snow by a skier falling backward), Netherlander (a native of Holland), and affability (a disposition to be friendly and approachable), she narrowly missed the correct spelling of nubuck (a soft, sueded leather). In February, Klocek won the Tolt spelling bee on the word tentacle, earning a trip to the regional competition plus one-year subscriptions to Encyclopedia Britannica and Powerspeak, a language learning program. “Gabby placed higher than any other Tolt rep in the three years I have been the coordinator,” said Tolt Language Arts teacher Katie Switaj. “More importantly, she upheld the tradition of Tolt spellers being positive and supportive of participants from other schools. I was so proud of her!” The Regional Spelling Bee was broadcast live on The Seattle Channel, and you can stream it from the channel’s website at www.seattlechannel.org/videos/video.asp?ID=5011306.

Memories were tested and brains were stretched Friday, in one of the hardestfought Battle of the Books finals. The teams, one from each of the Snoqualmie Valley School District’s five elementary schools, celebrated correct answers in the reading challenge, or shared confused looks when they missed a question, and as the tension built, Fall City Librarian and quizmaster Meg Handy thought it was time to remind everyone why they were here. “The key thing about the Battle of the Books is to get everyone excited about reading,” she said. “Are we there?” Since each team had prepared for almost an entire year for this day, beating out all the other teams in their own schools, these kids

were definitely excited about reading, but also about the competition itself, watching the scoreboard for every update. Sitting nearby, pre-schoolers Maddie Garwood and Dawson Ribary were untouched by the heat of competition, but almost as excited about reading. Sitting amidst a pile of books and playing with an iPad, the two friends were engrossed in something on the screen, while their parents cheered on their older siblings. At the end of the 40 rounds of questions, the home team, the Fall City Elementary Dinomites had the top score to take first place. The team includes Chloe Barber, Will Desler, Oliver Lang, Luke Nieman, and Lorenzo Perez. Snoqualmie Elementary School’s Book Battlers took second place. They are Holly Duim, Mackenzie Talbott, Jackson Crumb, Luke Harper and Keara Ryan. Tying for third place were the teams from Cascade View and Opstad. The CVES Brainiacs include Sarah Creighton, Bailey Hadley, Gemma Haskitt, Ella Hikes and Ryan Turner. The Opstad White Wolves are Sirus Persyn, Isabelle Thomson, Hans Roman, Cody Barber and Maddy Kelly.

Photos by Carol Ladwig Top, members of the North Bend Elementary Hurricanes have a sudden inspiration for the answer to the book question. Center, Will Desler, second from right, excitedly tells his team captain, Chole Barber, the answer to the question, as teammates, Oliver Lang, Lorenzo Perez and Luke Nieman lean in to hear it. Far left, holding their stuffed bear team mascot, Cascade View team members consult on the answer. Left, Opstad and Snoqualmie teams celebrate their correct answer “Heart of the Samurai.”. Inset, Dawson Ribary and Maddie Garwood, both 5, check out an iPad in the library during the book battle.

Valley artist partners with Euro Lounge owner to share continental colors in North Bend Editor

Some years back, Dick Burhans and his wife Sallie explored the timeless art and scenery of Europe. Now, the artistic visions he brought back from Italy, Austria and Germany have a new purpose, enlivening Sinacia Yovanovich’s Euro Lounge Cafe and crepe restaurant in downtown North Bend. Yovanovich was born in Romania, emigrated with his parents to an Arizona refugee camp at age 7, and grew up in the Puget Sound area. Now a Fall City resident, the cafe that he opened in 2011 is his dream come true. He met Burhans, whose paintings are just one of his many projects to support local business and the Valley. Yovanovich was thrilled with how Burhans made this happen so quickly. “People are really loving it,” he said. “This is how I pictured things in here. This is what I had in mind.” Burhans broke out his watercolors for some new original pieces, flexing his talent in the different medium. The new works were based on Burhans’ artistic exploration of Europe with his wife, Sallie. “Sal and I do a lot of travel in Europe,” said Burhans. “We used to take ballroom dancing lessons.” Just learning the Vienna waltz, the couple wanted to dance it where it originated. So, for their 25th wedding anniversary, they made a trip to Vienna, Austria, to waltz at the Rathaus, the city hall of Vienna, during the ball season. The Rathaus holds a thousand people with an orchestra on each end of the building. Dances are led off by the local youth, young people in fancy dress. “Sallie and I go out to start the ball, and they start to play a swing! Benny Goodman!”Burhans says. “The next one is a cha-cha.” Eventually, they did the hometown dances, and Richard and Sallie got to waltz. It was a stunning experience, they recalled. “If you want to see the art in Europe, you go to Vienna,” said Burhans. Austria’s Habsburg rulers patronized and collected heavily over the centuries. “There’s every artist in the world there. That art is beautifully taken care of.” Exploring Europe, the Burhanses had cookies with a countess in an Italian palace, and listened to the music playing from touristfriendly barges on a Bavarian lake.

“We tried to hit old palaces in old places,” says Dick. Dick Burhans was most impressed by the craft and the respect for art that he found in Europe. “Those people put generations, lifetimes of effort in,” he said. “People have dedicated their whole lives to it.” Yovanovich and Burhans will keep the watercolors up at Euro Lounge as long as they’re popular. They’re for sale. The art has made a difference, Yovanovich says. Customers feel more comfortable and stay longer. He’s made changes to the cafe since opening, bringing in a 19th-century wine bar and adding savory and sweet crepes and beverages. Euro Lounge Cafe is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

United front Shutout is high point of week for league-battling Wildcat baseball team

Mount Si baseball is battling hard for a shot at league glory, using a team dynamic of all-for-one. Fresh off pitching a shut-out last Monday against Sammamish, pitcher Connor Swift shared his thoughts on where this season is going. “To have a good team, everybody has to be equal,” Swift said. “Everyone has everyone’s back. We’ll pick up anyone who needs to be picked up.” Mount Si is closing out a regular season that saw a very strong start, but also a few speedbumps lately. The Sammamish win last Monday, April 22, was a great boost for a team that had a very busy and challenging week. Mount Si blasted the Totems, 13-0, with leadoff man Joey Cotto gaining two hits and a run in three at-bats. Number two Carson Breshears added two hits and three runs, while a heating-up Brian Woolley had two hits and a run. Tanner Simpson and Wyatt Baker-Jagla each had two hits. Swift gave up three runs in four innings with four strike outs, and Austin Hall pitched the final inning with no hits and a strike out. “We thought we’d start off hot, and we definitely got ourselves a good win,” said Cotto, a senior. “We had good approaches at the plate, ran the bases well and put some hits together. We need to keep doing that,” said head coach Zach Habben. Everybody’s been playing well, he added, and there’s still competition for starting spots. KingCo is a tough league in 2013, with multiple teams gunning for each other. Mount Si players “are all pushing for each other,” Habben said. “Guys are performing at a high level and pushing themselves to get better. You couldn’t ask for anything more.” “I have high hopes for this team,” said Cotto, who praised pitching staff for their improvement. “I’m proud of everybody.” The ‘Cats had a mixed week, losing Wednesday, April 24, to Lake Washington, 7-6. Connor Jensen, Evan Johnson and Cotto had two hits each. Breshears, Zach Usselman and Hall added one apiece. Chase Kairis gave 11 hits and struck out three. Mount Si fell to Interlake on Tuesday, April 23, 7-5. Mount Si fell 5-3 to visiting Bellevue on Friday, April 26. Evan Johnson hit two doubles and had two RBIs, and Nick Adams had a homer. Adams and Swift pitched. Mount Si’s regular season wraps this Thursday, May 2, 4:30 p.m. at home with Liberty. Mount Si is third in league, 8-3, 12-4 overall. Follow the team at mtsihsbaseball.com.

College football play stays at Corvallis for Mount Si’s ‘Bird Dog,’ Nick Mitchell By Seth Truscott

773560

Editor

The Mount Si High School Wildcat Football Booster Club would like to warmly thank the Snoqualmie Tribe

MT. SI

It’s pretty darn solid: 17-year-old Nick Mitchell will join his older brother Josh on the gridiron at Corvallis, Ore. Mitchell, Mount Si’s all-Kingco-ranked quarterback last fall, made a verbal commitment to play football with Oregon State University after high school graduation in 2014. OSU was the right fit, says Nick. “It seemed like the perfect school to go to,” he said. “It’s a great family atmosphere. They not only help you become a better player, but also a better man.” Older brother Taylor attends Humboldt in California. His younger brother, Caleb, plays for Mount Si. All-Kingco lineman Josh Mitchell was tapped to play at Oregon State just before his senior season. While the family connection wasn’t crucial to his decision, Nick says it is nice having a brother there. Plus, getting the big decision done allows him to “focus on my senior season, making my game and myself, better.” Last fall, the ‘Bird Dog’ passed for more than 2,000 yards, making 30 touchdowns in Mount Si’s drive to the semifinals. He was a first-team All-Kingco selection. These days, he’s lifting five days a week in the weight room, practicing and throwing. Camps are also in the offing, including a trip to the Elite 11 Regional Camp in Chicago May 3. With a full-ride offer, he expects to red-shirt his freshman year. As for studies, Mitchell plans to go into business marketing. Before then, this fall, Nick intends to maintain the Mount Si magic that took the 2012 team all the way to state. “We have a lot more returning players than people may think,” he said. “Our guys are working hard in the weight room. We have the guys to have another great season,” rattling off the names of classmates like Bailey Takacs, Trevor Daniels, Chris Schlicting, Brad Christensen, Evan Johnson and Beau Shain. “I’m going to work hard and make my team the best we can be,” Mitchell said. “It should be a great season.” College offers for juniors are rare, but they happen at Mount Si High School. Last year, Mount Si football’s star kicker Cameron Van Winkle got a spring offer from the University of Washington as a junior. Midfielder soccer star Miranda Rawlings committed to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in the middle of her junior year. Available

Harold Calvin Knecht

Harold was born December 17, 1985. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on April 27, 2013. Hank was 27 years old. Family, friends and his Golden Lab Boone were his life. He is already sorely missed, but surely not forgotten. Hank is preceded in death by his mother Krista and his name sake and grandfather, Harold Knecht. He will be forever missed by his best friend and father John, stepmom; Joni, brothers; Jake, Robby and Derrick, sisters; Cara and Jonna as well as countless friends and whoever was lucky enough to have met Hank.
