King County Sheriffs deputies continue to investigate the April 15 shooting near Enumclaw that resulted in the death of a 50-year-old man and the arrest of a 21-year-old for an alleged home burglary. The reported location of the alleged burglary was in the 4800 block of 323rd Avenue South in unincorporated King County. According to King County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Cindi West, as of Friday charges had not been filed in the case and the case is still being investigated. WRONG LANE: Police took multiple reports at approximately 7:35 a.m. May 1 about a driver traveling the wrong direction in a lane of Warner Avenue. The female motorist was stopped near Watson Street where, she said, she had run out of gas. She was given a ride to get more fuel and warned about her inattentive driving. RECKLESS: A white Buick sedan was being driven recklessly at 7 a.m. May 1, traveling east on state Route 410 with three males aboard. The driver was reportedly speeding and passing other cars on the shoulder of the road. Police searched and found nothing, then notified the Washington State Patrol. DOMESTIC ASSAULT: The morning of May 1, police were dispatched to a Grand Fir Drive residence following a report of a domestic disturbance between a man and a woman. The male subject was taken into custody for fourth-degree assault. During the booking process, he refused to sign a no-contact order. HEAVY SMOKE: Police were called the morning of May 1 to assist the fire department at a Roosevelt Avenue address, where heavy smoke was coming from a commercial business due to a malfunctioning heater. CHARGED, RELEASED: Police responded the evening of April 30 to a Garrett Street address where a person was taken into custody for a weapon violation and creating a public nuisance. He was taken into custody and later released after posting bail; his vehicle was released to a girlfriend.

SHOOTING FROM 1 man was shot in the head and emergency workers were administering CPR. West reported through her Twitter account it may be a homeowner who shot the alleged burglar. The 21-year-old suspect fled in a 2002 gray Ford Explorer that was reported to be owned by the homeowner’s daughter. The scanner reported the passenger window of the Explorer may have been

CIVIL, NOT CRIMINAL: Police were dispatched April 30 to a Myrtine Street address following a report of a residential burglary. After contacting the parties involved, an officer determined it was an ongoing issue regarding property. The city attorney confirmed it was a civil issue and no charges were to be filed. DOGS ALLOWED: Police were notified April 30 about two pit bulls running loose in the vicinity of Harding Street. An officer followed one of the dogs to its residence, where the owner provided paperwork confirming the dogs are American bulldogs, not pit bulls, and are allowed in the city. VEHICLE PROWL: Police were told the morning of April 29 of a vehicle that had been prowled the previous night at a Mountain View Drive address. A window had been broken but nothing was taken. HEALTH CONCERN: An officer visited a home April 29 on Wallace Avenue to check on a woman. The situation was settled for the night and the woman said she would contact her counselor the following day. NOISE COMPLAINT: Police were alerted at 11:30 p.m. April 29 to loud noise coming from a Natalie Place residence, possibly involving juveniles in some sort of altercation. Officers made contact and the party was shut down for the night. BROTHERLY BATTLE: Police responded shortly before noon April 28 to a Melody Lane address and a report of a domestic assault involving

DOMESTIC SITUATION: An officer was dispatched the afternoon of April 28 to a Cascade Street address after hearing of a domestic argument. The officer was informed the male involved in the situation had damaged the window of a vehicle belonging to the caller. The man was arrested for third-degree malicious mischief and transported for booking. WARRANT ARREST: A 20-yearold man voluntarily surrendered to Buckley police as he was wanted on an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant. He was booked into the Fife jail. ASSAULT ALLEGED: Officers were dispatched the afternoon of April 24 after learning of a possible fight in progress. It was determined a 13-year-old girl was reporting an assault that had occurred earlier in the day, not in Buckley but in unin-

shot out. Later that evening West said, King County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a 21-year-old man in

Enumclaw. Initial reports are the man fled to his parents’ home and was arrested there by the detectives.

Market driven by inventory The current real estate market in the Plateau area can be summed up in one word: inventory. If we want to expand that to three words, it would be: lack of inventory. As high-tech as real estate has become, with continual Internet access to every listing on the market, smart phone apps and GPS systems, it’s an age-old concept that continues to win the day: supply and demand. When the real estate market saw declining pric-

As of 2012. In June of 2012, of this writing, there are 53 homes actively being marketed in the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. Currently, there are 54 homes that are “pending sales,” which means a homeowner has accepted an offer but hasn’t closed on the sale. In a normal market (if there is such a thing anymore) the active homes would outnumber the pending homes by a ratio of three or four to

one. Instead, there are actually slightly more homes waiting to close than are being actively marketed. This, of course, creates a strong seller’s market. In a seller’s market (generally any time there are less than three months’ worth of inventory available for sale) buyers often end up competing for a home with other qualified buyers, which usually ends up driving the prices of homes higher. If you are a homeowner who saw equity disappear during the past five years, that is good news. However, the recovery of prices in our area will be a long, slow process. One year of good activity will not wipe out five years of declining prices. Shawn Inmon has lived in Enumclaw since 1986 and has been helping people buy and sell real estate for 20 years. Simple steps make a garden wildlife-friendly Meet Marianne Binetti Saturday at the Backyard Wildlife Festival for two free seminars: “A Bird Lover’s Garden at 10:30 a.m. and “Designing the WildlifeFriendly Landscape at 12:30 p.m. The festival will be at 124 42nd Ave. in south Tukwila For more information about the free festival go to www. backyardwildlifefestival.org. The second week of May brings a celebration of mothers and all things maternal. Mother Nature gets to join in the holiday spirit with new life sprouting up all over. Life began in a garden, so in honor of the birds and wildlife that also enjoy the gardens we humans create, here are four tips for designing a more wildlife friendly landscape.

Provide some food – berries, insects and seeds

Plants with berries like Oregon grape or mahonia, seeds from coneflower, sunflowers and ornamen-

tal grasses and blooming plants that attract insects like euphorbia, lavender and roses are all examples of how to set out a “come and get it” buffet and welcome the wildlife to your landscape.

Add some water – a fountain, bird bath or low boggy area

The sound of running water will draw raccoons, frogs, salamanders and flocks of colorful birds to the garden. If you’re concerned about the safety or maintenance of a traditional pond and waterfall consider a “pondless waterfall” that recirculates water trapped beneath a covering of loose stone. There is no standing water so no buildup of algae or mosquitoes and very little maintenance. A pondless waterfall has moving water that provides a continuous drinking source for pets.

Millenials learning to sail their ship I recently finished reading “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. For those of you not familiar with the tale it is the coming-of-age story of the four March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Now, if you talk to someone who has read the book, or seen the movie, you’re likely to hear about Jo and Beth as favorite characters. Meg isn’t really on anyone’s radar, not surprising since she is more or less a noncharacter in the second half of the book. Amy is the obnoxious one and it seems she usually gets a bad rap. It’s ironic, however, because Amy gets arguably one of the best lines in the book, “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to Katherine Smith sail my ship.” Guest writer This line comes as the story draws to a close; the sisters are grown and have weathered the trials and joys of growing up and the death of Beth. I’ve written columns before about education and the changes that are coming to our school systems. I’ve spent a good deal of time thinking about, and having conversations about my experience in one of the local systems, about my university experience and about what local districts are trying to do and the vision they are trying to realize in preparing their young people for tomorrow. About what I liked, what I loved, what I wish had been different and what I wish I knew as I went from an institution of higher education to the rest of life. About the way the world is and the challenges that Millennials face as a generation. I believe students and recent grads need to have a voice in the changes that are coming. After all, it is our lives that our being scrutinized and their lives that will be affected. As I’m sure our readers know, finding living-wage jobs amid the worst recession since the Great Depression has been the chief struggle we as Millennials have faced as we have come of age. I like to think this challenge could become one of our biggest strengths. This is the way the world is and we have to find a way to live in it. We must find a way to sail our ships and weather the storms individually and collectively. That’s part of growing up. Every generation before us has had to figure it out, too. The challenge will be good for us. I can only speak from my own experience, but I learned a lot in the time between graduation and my first real paycheck. There were good times like seeing friends graduate, road-tripping across the country, standing with my sister as she got married and with a friend when she did too, and the birth of my niece, Emma.

Feds, state hand issue to cities Recently, three mayors came to a meeting of the Enumclaw Regional Healthcare Foundation, of which I am a member. Present were Liz Reynolds, mayor of Enumclaw, Pat Johnson, mayor of Buckley, and Rebecca Olness, mayor of Black Diamond. As we went around the room, Mayor Reynolds and Mayor Johnson riffed on how King and Pierce counties have dumped the problem of the homeless mentally ill on the cities—with no funding to handle it. Mayor Reynolds noted that this problem actually began at the federal level. The government needed to cut expenses so it passed on caring for the mentally ill to the states, which passed the problem to the counties, who kicked the can down the road to the cities. Reynolds exclaimed, “I’m livid over this problem!” Johnson agreed that Pierce County had done the same thing to them. King County requires two interviews for symptoms of mental illness. Legally, the city police cannot release potentially mentally ill individuals until after they have been interviewed. On one occasion the city of Enumclaw called King

County at 4 p.m. asking for an interview. The woman from the county said it was too late in the day to deal with this issue. It was too far to drive to Enumclaw and she needed to get home to her children. Meanwhile, the police officer had to stay with the potentially mentally ill person until the interview was completed—costing the city overtime and removing an officer from patrolling the streets. Reynolds has suggested they do interviews using Skype, with Enumclaw as a pilot program. The county is looking into that. An administrator from St. Elizabeth Hospital chimed in, saying she had the same problem with the county that the cities do. The hospital has to deal with the mentally ill who come to their doors without any

aid from the county. All that accomplishes is that it drives up the cost of healthcare—a form of indirect taxation for the public. This is an example of a paralyzed and fearful government that, rather than raise taxes and anger its constituents, creates indirect taxation on the public through higher health costs that the public has to pay in another form—in this case poorer police coverage. That’s neither efficient nor smart. Federal, state and county governments are avoiding their responsibilities out of fear of an irrational citizenry that wants all the services government can provide, yet does not want to pay the cost of those decisions. The results of this irresponsible behavior trickle down to the cities and healthcare institutions, stuck with extra costs they can’t afford. Isn’t it time for the public to face the reality that if they want the services they’re going to have to pay the costs? Not dealing with the problems means that these mental health issues are not properly addressed to

Troubles too numerous to count My friends, we face a host of problems, any one of which could be absolutely catastrophic and a threat to our very existence. It’s not a topic we generally like to explore or confront because it’s rather depressing, to say the least. I mean, it can ruin your whole day. For starters, there’s the monstrous debt that characterizes most countries all over the world, pushing European states to the brink of financial meltdown and bankruptcy and, if it happens there, America won’t be far behind. Global unemployment is rising exponentially and the tremendous gap between the rich and the poor is getting larger, leading to revolt and geopolitical instability and collapse. Then there’s the alarming problem of deforestation as we decimate entire ecosystems, including gigantic swathes of the rain forests that produce much of the essentials of life – like water and oxygen. And there’s the awesome amount of garbage we generate every day – some of which, like the stuff at Hanford, is so deadly it’ll knock cockroaches off their feet – and the immense problem of disposing of it. How about the increasing frequency of super-violent storms like Sandi and Katrina? Then too, the world’s population is growing by leaps and bounds – presently on

Wally’s World Wally DuChateau Columnist

course to double in the next 10 or 15 years – causing food shortages and predictions of mass starvation, which may not materialize because the lack of clean water will kill us first. Furthermore, governments seem unable to react to or deal with any of these disasters. Stay with me. We’re just getting started. There will be mass population migrations, often to the U.S., which may find itself unable to absorb or control. Furthermore, since the mean temperature of the earth is rising, melting the Arctic icecaps and mountain glaciers, the sea levels are rising, which will f lood the earth’s coastal areas and cities. Nations with nuclear armaments are often unstable – countries like Pakistan and North Korea – and you never know what the hell they’ll do next. Terrorists are after nuclear bombs and I suspect, sooner or later, they’ll get them, whereupon every two-bit thug on

the planet will be carrying an A-bomb around in a suitcase. Of course, the air in coal-fire countries like China isn’t fit for human consumption, which is also true in several American cities. Indeed, the polluted air is acidifying the oceans, killing marine life that feeds half the world’s people. And tropical diseases, which are foreign to our hemisphere, are moving North and “super bugs,” against which we have no antibodies, are sprouting up every day, leading to a very real possibility of worldwide plagues. There are tribal wars and religious wars and civil wars and national wars and class wars, and lord only knows what other kinds of wars and rumors of wars. And when incurable plagues start sweeping across entire continents and food is getting scarce and the economy has buckled and snapped, then entire cities – hundreds of thousands of people – will start running amuck in the streets, turning into roving bands of desperate, cannibalistic savages. Faced with such apocalyptic events and situations, what the hell is a young fella supposed to do? Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m heading to Rendezvous. And people wonder why I drink so much!

Homeward bound

After the doctor’s work was done, it was time to get to the business of returning home. Saylor’s crew was still well away from the extraction point. The problem was transportation. There were no buses, trains or even roads. So they walked, hoping for a stroke of good fortune. Luck came on the trail up to the mountains in the form of a Chinese teenager, name unknown, recently orphaned by bombings in Shanghai. “He spoke a little English, and he stayed with us for the rest of our trip across China,” Saylor said. “He became our navigator, our interpreter and our food scrounger. We owed him big time.” With his help, they made it to a broken down bus that gave them harbor, as long as they were willing to push it up hills. The Japanese were still in pursuit and executing retaliatory attacks on Chinese soil. At one point, Saylor recalled, a bomber took out an identical bus just a short distance ahead of them — the second-to-last close call of the mission. The last came while they were taking shelter in a pagoda that gave them a clear view of bombings on a nearby city. “One day, we decided we better not stay in this pagoda anymore, because we figured they’d find us,” Saylor said. These were violent times for Chinese civilians, and they knew some civilians would be willing to sell them out in exchange for their safety. “So we stopped going to that pagoda, and the next day they bombed it. We got out of there just in time.” The situation had degraded to the point that there was no hope for an air

extraction from China. They hitchhiked across the country, through India and then to West Africa. Finally, in Africa, they made contact with the Navy and were able to arrange a flight across the Atlantic. There was one problem: they had one too many passengers. The crew of the TNT attempted to bring their teenaged guide with them on the plane, hoping to bring the boy who ensured their survival back to the States. But they were told it just couldn’t be allowed. He was left behind on the tarmac.

CORNER FROM 6 Then there was the hard stuff. The countless, and sometimes seemingly endless, job rejections, and two cancer diagnoses in my family. Sometimes I wondered if I would ever be a writer. But through all of that I learned. About not giving up and fighting for your dreams. About sticking it out and holding on. I know those are lessons I’ll take with me into the rest of life.

Aftermath Saylor’s wife finally found out about her husband’s mission, but not from his own mouth. She was taking in a movie when the newsreel showed him receiving a medal from Madame Chiang Kai-shek. She had a few adventures of her own during his absence. One of Saylor’s favorite stories involved her deciding to meet his family in Montana. She sent out a telegram ahead and immediately departed. When she arrived in the closest accessible town, she hitched a ride to the ranch. She was confused to find nobody knew who she was. But they put her up, and the next time the mail arrived, there was her telegram; she had arrived ahead of it. Saylor himself went on to a 28-year career with the Air Corps and its successor, the Air Force. He served in Europe during the remainder of the war and admitted he felt a little awed by the continued heroism of the Army GI’s. As it would turn out, Saylor’s emergency engine work on the TNT would be his first step in a reputation for never grounding a plane for mechanical failure. He retired in 1967, having achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. April 17 was bittersweet for Saylor and his fellow surviving Raiders. Every year, they have met during the anniversary of the raid for a reunion. Last year, with only a handful left, they decided to make 2013 the end.

Last week was my 24th birthday and my sisters did something incredibly cool: they framed my first column for me. See, it wasn’t just a column, it’s a reminder of everything I went through to get there, to get here. In the end, after all the classes, tests, sports, extracurricular activities, programs and everything else, it is up to us to make the most of what this world has given us and to take on the storms we face, and as Amy said, to learn to sail our ships.

Following Jesus means being out of step with the world I’m writing on a beautiful afternoon! compassion, of justice and mercy. I was reminded (as we stood in that glorious sunshine) of Jesus’ own moments of prayer and how often he prayed that others would receive God’s blessings. The apostle John recorded one of those prayer times (John 17) in which Jesus noted that his followers would not always fit comfortably into the world around them. Jesus even prayed for his followers then, asking God to protect them and to make them holy even

while they were still in this world. Jesus noted that his followers wouldn’t really fit into the world very easily; Jesus’ followers would find themselves out of step with “world” around them in many ways, and Jesus didn’t ask God to change the world so they would “fit in.” He asked only that God preserve them through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus described them as still being “in the world”

the detriment of us all, especially the mentally ill. Federal, state, and county elected officials have avoided dealing with these problems because they are afraid if they raise taxes to pay the costs, their constituents will vote them out of office. Local officials want to know how they are going to address these issues that have arrived on their doorsteps, putting the public at risk.

If voters want their elected officials to be accountable, the buck really stops in the pockets and the decisions of voters. Voters need to realize they are the ones who must be accountable and elect and retain responsible public officials who will deal with the problems rather than pass them down to the next level. This practice simply doesn’t make any sense and it needs to stop. The buck doesn’t stop with the government officials; the buck really stops with us, the voters and taxpayers.

Dorothy (Dorri) Ann Basteyns Knutson Feb. 9, 1920 – Apr. 28, 2013

Our loving Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, and special friend passed away in peace in her home with family by her side. She went happily to Jesus and is smiling right now. She was awarded Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women’s Organization that same year. She remained postmaster until she retired to Salishan, Oregon in 1982. In her 31 years of retirement, Dorothy continued to live a rich and fulfilling life. She married Clark Knutson. They traveled extensively together, and he taught her how to fish and hunt. They eventually settled in Newport, Oregon. Dorothy was a wonderful artist who won many ribbons for her artwork. It’s postseason time, Plateau teams peaking By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

Another subdistrict title for White River baseball

The White River High baseball team, fresh off a subdistrict championship, enters West Central District action today, Wednesday. The Hornets will take the field at 5 p.m. at Franklin Pierce High School against an opponent that was to be decided during Tuesday’s opening round of WCD play. The tournament is a double-elimination affair for the top four entries. If the Hornets win today’s game, they will play again at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Silverdale; winning that game would put the Hornets in the championship bracket. If White River loses today’s contest, the Hornets will play at 11 a.m. Saturday, returning to Franklin Pierce; that would be a loser-out contest. White River picked up its third subdistrict title in a row Thursday afternoon with a 12-1 victory over Orting. A trio of Zachs led the way for White River. Zach Rohrbach was the winning pitcher, had two hits and drove in a run; Zach Howard went 3-for-3, scored twice and knocked in four runs; and Zach

McMillen had a hit and 2 RBIs. This marks the third season in a row the Hornets captured the subdistrict crown and head into WCD play as the No. 1 seed.

Enumclaw water polo qualifies for state tournament

Enumclaw finished the regular season Friday with a 12-5 victory over league foe Kentridge. Bella Davenport led the way with 5 goals and Sierra Clough added two. Scoring one apiece were Hayley Sonneson, Bailey Sexton, Brandi Meneghini, Anna Davenport and Kate Braun. Enumclaw hosts Puyallup today, Wednesday, in the regular-season finale.

OBITUARIES SUZETTE STEWART Enumclaw resident Suzette Anna Stewart died in her home April 28, 2013, at the age of 50 following a seven-year battle with breast cancer. She was born Aug. 10, 1962, in Everett, Wash., to Howard and Wilma Ploegsma. She grew up on Whidbey Island with her sister Caryl and brother Garry. She graduated from Marysville Pilchuck High School in 1980 and began a career as an x-ray service technician. She married Steve Stewart

on Aug. 27, 1988. They moved to a little farm house outside Enumclaw in 1989 and together they raised three children there, along with numerous horses, ponies, cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys, Suzette Stewart dogs, cats, rabbits and the occasional alpaca. She was active in the Enumclaw community, where she brightened the lives of all who met her. She spent 15 years as a 4-H leader, horse show judge and mentor, during which she provided support to many at-risk youth. She also kept busy supporting her children at horse shows, Enumclaw High fastpitch and wrestling matches,

a moral and ethical purity because Jesus was moral and ethical in every way, we must at times be out of step with the world around us. That’s usually uncomfortable and sometimes it’s dangerous. Our sophisticated modern (or postmodern if you wish) world doesn’t really seem to approve of public demonstrations of faith. But for a few minutes at least, we gathered to pray for everyone around us, our neighbors, our community, our schools, our leaders here on the Plateau, serving in Olympia, and even in our nation’s capital. And I pray that we continue to learn how to be like Jesus in compassion, in humility, in grace and in love for one another.

even while they no longer “belonged to the world.” And Jesus observed the sad fact that there would be times when being like Jesus would (like Jesus did) draw a hostile response. There would be times when people’s determination to do what they please would conflict with our commitment to honor God in the conduct of our lives. That’s a very true and very sad reality. But if we are to follow Jesus, to be like Jesus in approving of those things Jesus found to be good, to be like Jesus in opposing those things that Jesus opposed, to pursue

band concerts, football games and marching band competitions. She could be found riding her horse in the foothills around Enumclaw, waterskiing or snowmobiling with her family, or working on one of the countless improvement projects she envisioned around her farm. She is survived by her husband of nearly 25 years, Steve; daughters Hillary Dawn and husband Mick, and Jillian of Enumclaw; son Wyley, a junior at EHS; sister Caryl Lennox and husband Ian of Langley, B.C.; brother Garry Ploegsma of North Bend, Wash.; and mother Wilma Ploegsma of Enumclaw. Join QFC at Komen Puget Sound for the Cure This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Puget Sound Komen Race for the Cure®. Great strides have been made in the fight against breast cancer during those 20 years, but the fight is not over. Advances in research, detection and treatment have saved thousands of lives and Komen has in some way touched every major breast cancer advance in the last 30-plus years. There is still more to be done and QFC is committed to helping continue the important work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. The Komen organization is QFC’s charity of the month for May. On June 2nd, QFC will also be the presenting sponsor of the Puget Sound Komen Race for the Cure®. This great event brings together thousands of runners, walkers, breast cancer survivors, friends and families to spend a fun-filled morning of sharing, caring and community. 75% of the funds raised from this event stay right here in Puget Sound to support breast health

education, breast cancer screening and treatment and other direct help. This support is critically important because despite the many advances that have taken place, over 200,000 women and men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. One of every eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Approximately 95% of all breast cancers diagnosed in the U.S. occur in women over 40. However, the good news is that the 5-year survival rate for women who have had their breast cancer diagnosed before it spread beyond the breast is 99%. This is up from 74% in 1982. 25% of the funds that are raised through local events like the Puget Sound event are used to fund a wide range of research. There are over 750 ongoing projects in the U.S. and many other countries. The research focuses on using current knowledge to discover new ways to reduce risk, identify cancer cells at earlier and earlier

stages when treatment is most effective, develop new treatments and ultimately to prevent breast cancer altogether. Research funding has been provided to a wide variety of college graduates, doctoral studies graduates and established scientists and doctors, including to three Nobel Prize winners. Research applications are rigorously peer reviewed by clinical and scientific experts and trained advocates. If you would like to join QFC in supporting the valuable work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, one way would be to join us and thousands of others at the Race for the Cure on June 2, 2013, at

Seattle Center. Information on signing up can be found online at komenpugetsound.org. A second way to support the organization is to donate at our checkstands. We have donation scan cards in $1, $5, and $10 amounts and also change jars for your spare change.
